- 0:00Or back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coach You show Mike Crispino
- 0:03here at Xavier on Sunday eleven thirty, pre game twelve o'clock, the opening
- 0:07tip, second game against the Musketeers. Let's talk some specifics, Dan about
- 0:12about players. I mean, at Villanova, just a Newton, cool hand
- 0:17Newton I call him. I mean, the dude came up with what the
- 0:20goods when you really needed him, a twenty five point night when scoring was
- 0:24at a premium. I know he hasn't been shooting it in conference play all
- 0:29that well, but I still trust the guy when he puts it up there.
- 0:33What about you, Yeah, I mean he uh just look at look
- 0:39at uh you know, the year and a half that he's been here and
- 0:42uh, everything that we've been able to accomplish as a program. He's got
- 0:47a chance to, uh, you know, if he locks in here and
- 0:50stays fully engaged and and gets lost in the offense a little bit more and
- 0:56and and and and and really tries to lead with more uh more urgency,
- 1:02and he's got a chance to, uh, you know, state the claim
- 1:04to uh you know, one of the greatest two year runs uh you know,
- 1:10the players had here in terms of what he's positioned to do at this
- 1:12particular juncture. So uh you know he uh you know, he hasn't shot
- 1:18it well, he hasn't shot it efficiently. You know, some players,
- 1:22uh you know, I think their value goes beyond the numbers and the efficiency.
- 1:26It's uh you know, he does uh you know, I think we're
- 1:30just in uh you know, could sometimes get himself into trouble is when he
- 1:34uh you know, when he maybe thinks score too much and and doesn't focus
- 1:38on doing the all around things. I mean, he's a guy with the
- 1:42size at the point guard position that can really fill a statue. But on
- 1:48a night where where Alex and Cam didn't have their best night scoring, you
- 1:53know, that's where it's uh, you know, the to have three guys
- 1:56and now with Donovan back, four guys that can get you, you know,
- 2:00twenty plus at any given night. That's a that's a that's a big
- 2:02help. Yeah, no, no doubt. That's how you get to eighty
- 2:06often assist a turn turnover ratio is very good with him and the team as
- 2:09well. I mean, you're one of the best teams in the country assists
- 2:14I think fifteenth in the country at eighteen, I think byos By us the
- 2:17best of that and and that efficiency adds up to efficiency, doesn't it?
- 2:23On offense? Your tenth in the country. I believe that fifty seven percent
- 2:28effective offensive efficiency? Is that a number that you like to see? I
- 2:32mean, obviously it's it's working. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know,
- 2:37we we we're trying to play you know, team offense, and we
- 2:40want our guys to you know, to to move and screen and cut and
- 2:46keep the ball moving and put pressure on the paint and you know, and
- 2:52gets as close a twos as we can get to the rim and as in
- 2:57as many good threes as we can get, and we obviously want to get
- 3:00to the foul line. But you know, I think you know, the
- 3:04the uh, you know, the improvement and the evolution of our offensive approach
- 3:08is uh has changed. It's changed the type of players we recruit. Uh,
- 3:15it's changed. Uh. You know the failure you know of past teams
- 3:21and you know, the shortcomings that we had offensively, both from a skill
- 3:25standpoint the scheme standpoint, it's caused us going to a different direction. And
- 3:30uh, you know, we've been one of the best offensive offensive teams in
- 3:35the country when when you can't when you add in our ability to offensive rebound
- 3:38as well. Yeah, talking about free throws for a second. In the
- 3:43Villa and Over game, I mean you outscored them at the line. Now
- 3:46they're the best free throw shooting team in the country. You go eighteen for
- 3:50twenty four, they go fourteen of seventeen, as Cam Spencer Tristan Newton go
- 3:53thirteen for fourteen. Uh. Does it come down a lot of times in
- 3:59these really close, grind it out games that you've got to get to the
- 4:01foul line, you've got to make some free throws. Yeah, you definitely
- 4:05got to make free throws in the close games. And you know, you
- 4:10look at some of the close games that we've lost over the years, the
- 4:15more excruciating ones. The COVID Creighton game at home. You know where Book
- 4:23went off. You know, I think he had forty in that game.
- 4:27But we you know, we missed critical you know, front ends of the
- 4:30one and one. You know, when a team fouls you at the end
- 4:33of the game, you know, and you're shooting one and ones, you're
- 4:38effectively in a way the other team, you know, in a way is
- 4:43no longer playing the game because you know, maybe thirty nine minutes and twenty
- 4:48seconds in, there's some level of you know, we've defeated them to that
- 4:53point in terms of there's not enough time left on the clock. So the
- 4:56only way to give it back, you know, is to miss. He
- 5:00throws turned the ball over, versus pressure, give up threes, whatever it
- 5:04is. But you know, we won the Villanova game with stops. We
- 5:10we won it with stops. We won it with free throw shooting. Uh,
- 5:14got to ask you this one. This I was talking to Jim Spinarkle
- 5:16for the pregame at Villanova. He was doing the game for Fox Sports.
- 5:20I just threw it out there. What's the more important stat? Defensive efficiency
- 5:25or three point offense? Now he landed on the side of defense. A
- 5:29guy like him who did nothing but shoot at Duke, that's all he did.
- 5:32But now he's talking about defensive stats. That's what he loves. Yeah,
- 5:36I'm curious where you fall on that thing. Yeah, I'm just listen.
- 5:42You gotta have a Yeah, obviously there's got to be some balance there.
- 5:46I don't think that you could be if you ask me, you know,
- 5:49would I'd rather have a slightly better offensive team than defensive team in today's
- 5:56game. Yeah, I would definitely, you know, I would want the
- 5:59better offensive team and then the defensive team. Uh. But you know you've
- 6:04got to be uh you know, you got to be top twenty in both.
- 6:08You got to be top twenty five in both have a chance to win
- 6:12anything. Well, you khn't has Xavier coming up then Providence at home.
- 6:17So you got two home games in a row here, h Excel versus Gamble,
- 6:23two different venues. You've been able to take care of business in both.
- 6:28What do you expect that crowd is going to be like on Sunday?
- 6:30I've been hearing like it's a really hard ticket to get obviously, and people
- 6:33are scrambling they want to see this team play Xavier for a second time this
- 6:38year. What do you expect? Yeah, I don't. I don't know
- 6:41that you necessarily have an expectation. I just talk about what we need,
- 6:44you know, and we need, you know. Wells Fargo was you know,
- 6:48in terms of size and it being you know, an arena that's away
- 6:55from campus, and but their shooting students showed up and they were they were
- 7:00loud, and they were you know, they weren't. You know, they
- 7:03weren't necessarily like nasty and you know, drunk as hell and cursing up a
- 7:09storm. But they they what's that? They were not nice to me.
- 7:14They were not nice to me on the way out. You know, if
- 7:16you're gonna yell at me on the way in, uh, pre game halftime
- 7:21and then back out for the second half and then I beat you and you're
- 7:26still there, you may hear something from me on the way out, especially
- 7:30if you're leaning over the rail and you're screaming at me. So but you
- 7:34know, Excel Center, we need it rocking. I mean we can't,
- 7:38you know, we we need them into it, like uh, you know,
- 7:42like a crazy fan base, you know, not just kind of going
- 7:46and like watching the game and then if we play well, we get into
- 7:49it. I mean, that place when it's on fire is uh is as
- 7:54good as there is in college. And uh, you know that's how you
- 7:57win, you know that, that's how you win your home games, not
- 8:01by you know, we never get into Exel Center, Like we don't get
- 8:05an opportunity to practice in there, We don't get an opportunity to shoot in
- 8:09there. We don't you know, we don't have this huge, comfortable playing
- 8:13environment like Gample where we're practicing in there all the time. So you know,
- 8:18so how do how has that become a major home court fortress for us
- 8:22by the fans being out of their minds from the tip? All right,
- 8:28Coach Dan Hurley with us, and we'll be back with more of the U
- 8:31com Men's Basketball Coaches Show Onlearfield.
