- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:06Speaker 1: Scott Brady, and I'm here with my co host Matt Scott.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Yeah, what are we doing. I don't know what we're doing.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Somebody tell me, no, we're This is kind of cool.
- 0:14Speaker 2: We're here with our friends Justin and Kira from West
- 0:17Speaker 2: By one thousand contributors, longtime friends of Overland Journal. These
- 0:20Speaker 2: guys kind of go everywhere on two wheels, and I
- 0:23Speaker 2: think one of the things that we like so much
- 0:24Speaker 2: about it is they actually kind of do it in
- 0:26Speaker 2: an attainable way, which is really rare. They're not on
- 0:28Speaker 2: the fanciest bikes, they're not in the biggest bikes. They
- 0:30Speaker 2: kind of just get after it. They're always out exploring.
- 0:33Speaker 2: So it's a really great thing to have you guys on.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Thanks for coming up.
- 0:36Speaker 3: We appreciate being invited.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Well yeah, And from my perspective, the quality of the
- 0:41Speaker 1: content that you guys produce is world class. You guys
- 0:44Speaker 1: have done several things for the magazine justin your photography
- 0:47Speaker 1: is totally enviable.
- 0:49Speaker 2: The quality of work that you're doing.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Matt and I were just talking earlier today and some
- 0:53Speaker 1: of your action sport stuff is truly exceptional, world class
- 0:58Speaker 1: right now, so you should be really proud of it.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Thank you the work you're doing.
- 1:01Speaker 1: And another thing that's always been so aspiring to me
- 1:05Speaker 1: is the fact that you guys have been able to
- 1:07Speaker 1: kind of just take your own path. You've never just
- 1:10Speaker 1: stuck yourself on like the Influencer Train or anything else.
- 1:13Speaker 1: You've done what felt creatively inspiring to yourselves and allowed
- 1:17Speaker 1: you guys to travel together and have all these amazing
- 1:20Speaker 1: new experiences. So it seems like you've put those things first.
- 1:23Speaker 1: So maybe talk about that a little bit. How do
- 1:26Speaker 1: you guys make decisions about what you're going to do next?
- 1:29Speaker 1: And a special thanks to our sponsor for today's episode,
- 1:32Speaker 1: Off the Grid, Surplus. They recently sent Matt and I
- 1:35Speaker 1: a few pairs of their new Trailblazer Pro pants, which
- 1:39Speaker 1: I think are ideal for international travel, remote exploration, and
- 1:43Speaker 1: of course overlanding. Personally, I like the overall fit of
- 1:45Speaker 1: these pants. They are tailored well, they don't look like
- 1:48Speaker 1: you've got a tent wrapped around your waist, and they
- 1:50Speaker 1: have four way stretch as well. They have eight pockets
- 1:53Speaker 1: scattered around waist in the upper thigh, and they even
- 1:56Speaker 1: have a mag pocket if you're feeling extra tactical someday,
- 2:00Speaker 1: or you need a spot to store a handheld radio
- 2:02Speaker 1: or a multi tool. They are quick drawing, which I
- 2:04Speaker 1: think is really important for international travel. That way, you
- 2:08Speaker 1: can wash them in the sink of the hostel and
- 2:11Speaker 1: have them dry by the next morning to continue on
- 2:13Speaker 1: with your journey. It allows you to pack much lighter.
- 2:15Speaker 1: You don't have to worry about doing laundry all the time.
- 2:18Speaker 1: They are also very lightweight and water resistant, which I
- 2:20Speaker 1: think is both an advantage for mixed conditions and unknown weather.
- 2:24Speaker 1: In fact, I think that I've been wearing them so
- 2:26Speaker 1: much that my other pants are starting to get jealous.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And if you'd like to have your very own pair
- 2:29Speaker 1: for the next thirty days, they are offering a ten
- 2:32Speaker 1: percent off program if you use the code overland Journal,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Thanks Again, off the Grid, surplush Man or.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Is it just a complete madhouse and you're gonna give
- 2:40Speaker 2: us some Yeah?
- 2:42Speaker 4: I mean a lot of it is sort of not
- 2:44Speaker 4: saying no to things like when opportunities. When people come
- 2:47Speaker 4: to us with an opportunity were unless there's a schedule conflict,
- 2:50Speaker 4: we usually I say yes, yeah, as long as that
- 2:52Speaker 4: sounds cool.
- 2:53Speaker 5: Well, it's on that like the long list of things
- 2:55Speaker 5: we've wanted to see or do sort of thing that's like, okay,
- 2:59Speaker 5: we have a free few months. This is the right
- 3:01Speaker 5: weather or the right time to go to Italy or
- 3:04Speaker 5: go to Mongol or or something.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I mean, you guys are such nomads. You're kind of
- 3:08Speaker 2: everywhere always.
- 3:09Speaker 4: It's been seven seven years, I think, yeah, since we've
- 3:12Speaker 4: been we've been pretty much on the road for like
- 3:13Speaker 4: seven years. I mean yeah, yeah, I mean we have
- 3:17Speaker 4: you know, you know, our things in one place. Now.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Finally we had a garage. That was it.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I remember the garage. It was a garage filled with
- 3:24Speaker 2: Moto gear. It was a really cool garage.
- 3:28Speaker 5: And then we bought garage doors for his mom's house
- 3:31Speaker 5: and she lets us store our crap there.
- 3:35Speaker 4: It was a pretty good trade, much cheaper. Yeah, it
- 3:37Speaker 4: was a pretty good trade instead of having like a
- 3:39Speaker 4: storage garage for the joke.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So you guys bounced between Phoenix and then spend most
- 3:44Speaker 2: of your time kind of these days in en Sonata,
- 3:46Speaker 2: which is cool. I mean, what do you guys like
- 3:48Speaker 2: so much about and Sonata? I mean, I love Baha,
- 3:50Speaker 2: we all love Baja.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I think everybody loves it.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It's not scary. You should go. It's definitely not scary.
- 3:55Speaker 5: I mean, culturally, it's extremely developed and it's diverse. I mean,
- 4:00Speaker 5: if you want to meet passionate entrepreneurs and artists, there's
- 4:03Speaker 5: a lot of them down there. Obviously, we have friends
- 4:06Speaker 5: and we have kind of a homestead to go back to,
- 4:08Speaker 5: so it's really easy for us. But there's just so
- 4:10Speaker 5: much on a personal level with nature, with the people.
- 4:14Speaker 3: The language Berri is not too hard, like good food.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Have you guys picked up a little bit of Spanish?
- 4:18Speaker 2: She speaks I'm terrible stumble through.
- 4:22Speaker 4: I can understand it a lot better than she can
- 4:24Speaker 4: speak it.
- 4:24Speaker 5: Well. The problem is that everyone in Sonata speaks well,
- 4:28Speaker 5: not just in Sanata Baja. They speak English, and then
- 4:31Speaker 5: they also, you know, don't have time for you to fumble.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Through your.
- 4:36Speaker 2: We'll take care of it a Spanish.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Most people down there, you know, most people in Baja
- 4:43Speaker 4: want to practice their English as much as.
- 4:45Speaker 2: You want to practice interested.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Sure, you kind of bump into that a lot, like
- 4:50Speaker 4: I yeah, it's I mean, get.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Around everyone's really they find it funny when you actually
- 4:54Speaker 5: do try, and so they'll speak to you in English
- 4:57Speaker 5: in Spanish, so you can practice understand, they encourage you
- 5:00Speaker 5: to speak back to me in English.
- 5:02Speaker 3: We can have like a little language trade.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Cool. Yeah, that's that's something that's like super high on
- 5:08Speaker 2: my list when I actually have well, I need to
- 5:10Speaker 2: just make the time. Yeah, you know, there's so many
- 5:13Speaker 2: wonderful Spanish speaking countries around the world that I really
- 5:17Speaker 2: need to need to prioritize that. I mean, like you said,
- 5:19Speaker 2: all of them typically when you're down there, they speak English.
- 5:22Speaker 2: So maybe it's the courtesy I need to do back.
- 5:24Speaker 4: We have good friends down there, that's another. I mean,
- 5:26Speaker 4: we have a number of very good friends down there,
- 5:29Speaker 4: and that draws us back down. When COVID she was
- 5:31Speaker 4: talking about this earlier, when COVID hit we were in Sonora.
- 5:34Speaker 4: The Sonora Rally had just wrapped up, and everybody was
- 5:36Speaker 4: bailing and going back to the States, and we just
- 5:38Speaker 4: turned and went west and went town Sonata and we
- 5:41Speaker 4: were there all the way through the end of June.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Wow.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think actually we made one trek up and
- 5:46Speaker 3: then back down.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Yeah, we want to. I think we went up to
- 5:48Speaker 4: grab some stuff and then turned around and went back
- 5:50Speaker 4: to Sanada and just stayed all the way through the
- 5:52Speaker 4: end of June, and the place that we stay is
- 5:54Speaker 4: called Granada Cove. It's a little little cove on the
- 5:56Speaker 4: on the on the sea and we called it Granada
- 5:58Speaker 4: Covid because everybody was of stuck there like we. And
- 6:01Speaker 4: we actually ran out of water Memorial Day week and
- 6:03Speaker 4: we ran out of water for like two weeks in
- 6:05Speaker 4: the whole city of en Sonata. There was a fire
- 6:07Speaker 4: at the water treatment plant north of town oh Man,
- 6:10Speaker 4: so for two weeks we had no water and we
- 6:11Speaker 4: had u Mauricio's got this hot tub.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Luckily we had filled for years. It was just empty. Yeah,
- 6:17Speaker 3: we were in it a lot.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Well, another front of ours. Joel is traveling in a
- 6:22Speaker 4: solar powered van and he had made it as far
- 6:25Speaker 4: as Central Baha and then long story broke down, came
- 6:28Speaker 4: back to en Sonata and we were using the solar
- 6:30Speaker 4: powered van to heat the hot tub, and so during
- 6:33Speaker 4: COVID we were just hanging out in this hot tub
- 6:35Speaker 4: and then.
- 6:35Speaker 5: We run We had a projector and we'd usually run
- 6:38Speaker 5: movies off the van, so we parked the van in
- 6:40Speaker 5: front of the hot tub.
- 6:41Speaker 3: It was a really tough time forever.
- 6:45Speaker 4: But when we ran out of water. We used the
- 6:46Speaker 4: hot tub water for the toilets.
- 6:48Speaker 5: And the neighbors also would come and grab some because
- 6:51Speaker 5: our friends Mauricio and Abby they have a lot more
- 6:53Speaker 5: than maybe some of the people around them, so they
- 6:55Speaker 5: were pretty generous.
- 6:56Speaker 2: That's cool. It seems that culture is very much that way.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 1: One of the few times I've hitchhiked in my life
- 7:03Speaker 1: was in Mexico, and I just remember being so nervous
- 7:06Speaker 1: being in a different country. One of my first trips,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I was in the middle of Copper Canyon and got
- 7:10Speaker 1: totally lost on a hiking trail and like just stuck
- 7:14Speaker 1: my thumb out in the middle of Mexico. And of
- 7:15Speaker 1: course the people were totally wonderful. Yeah, and some of
- 7:18Speaker 1: them spoke English a little bit, and they were like
- 7:21Speaker 1: making sure that I was okay and like went out
- 7:23Speaker 1: of their way. Every experience just about that I've had
- 7:26Speaker 1: in Mexico has just been so wonderful. Yeah, They're just
- 7:29Speaker 1: it's a great culture down there, and I think that
- 7:32Speaker 1: for me. One of the questions that a couple of
- 7:34Speaker 1: the questions that I wanted to ask, but one comes
- 7:36Speaker 1: to mind fairly early around the conversation that we just
- 7:39Speaker 1: had with where you guys live and how you live
- 7:42Speaker 1: your life. What has living that way taught you? How
- 7:45Speaker 1: has that really changed your perspective as travelers but also.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Like as humans, since you have kind.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Of stripped away a lot of the traditional ways of living.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You don't go to a nine to five, you don't
- 7:56Speaker 1: go to the same home, you don't drive the least sedan. Yeah,
- 8:00Speaker 1: you guys have completely changed all of those things in
- 8:04Speaker 1: your life. And how has that really changed you? How's
- 8:06Speaker 1: that really affected you?
- 8:07Speaker 4: I mean, you really nailed it with the stripping away part.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Especially for me, I've realized you don't need very much stuff.
- 8:13Speaker 4: You need way less stuff than you actually you have currently,
- 8:16Speaker 4: and a lot less than you think you need. I mean,
- 8:19Speaker 4: I travel with a backpack full of camera gear and
- 8:21Speaker 4: a duffel bag with clothes, and that's it, And that's
- 8:24Speaker 4: all I need. If I'm riding a motorcycle, you can add,
- 8:27Speaker 4: you know, a helmet and riding gear and some camping
- 8:29Speaker 4: stuff and then you know you're pretty well set. I mean,
- 8:31Speaker 4: I think stripping it away and realizing when we first
- 8:34Speaker 4: started really traveling together, like on a permanent basis, we
- 8:38Speaker 4: ended up living in Japan for a while and which.
- 8:40Speaker 2: We want to talk about.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, exact. Yeah. I mean, you know, traveling there
- 8:44Speaker 4: and then just bouncing around to other places to work
- 8:46Speaker 4: and do things. You have to keep it small and
- 8:48Speaker 4: you know you can't take all that stuff with you.
- 8:50Speaker 3: So I mean whatever you can carry sort of thing.
- 8:52Speaker 5: You don't want to carry a lot of weight, which
- 8:54Speaker 5: I don't, so you just figure out how to wear
- 8:57Speaker 5: the same.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I think traveling keeps your mind busy and it makes
- 9:00Speaker 2: you realize that it's you know, living in the moment
- 9:03Speaker 2: is actually the most fulfilling thing you can do. I always,
- 9:06Speaker 2: I don't know personally, I always kind of go between
- 9:08Speaker 2: this thing of when I'm traveling, I'm like super happy,
- 9:10Speaker 2: and I don't know how I'll say, but I forget
- 9:12Speaker 2: about Amazon, I forget about that thing that I want.
- 9:14Speaker 2: I forget about the upgrade that I want to do
- 9:17Speaker 2: to my bike or my car or whatever, and I'm
- 9:19Speaker 2: just like living in the moment. I think when you
- 9:22Speaker 2: when you're able to reach that point, you know, you
- 9:24Speaker 2: realize I don't actually need that stuff, and.
- 9:26Speaker 4: You appreciate quality more as well. Yeah, having good I mean,
- 9:30Speaker 4: if you're only going to have a few things, if
- 9:32Speaker 4: you're gonna have one double bad. Yeah, it better be
- 9:34Speaker 4: one you like and you're going to keep using it.
- 9:36Speaker 4: It's going to survive. Like, that's a big that's always
- 9:38Speaker 4: that's been a big part of our Yeah, that's.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Abstinitally been introduced to my lifestyle since I started traveling more.
- 9:44Speaker 3: It's just quality over quantity.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Not having to worry about the durability of my gear
- 9:49Speaker 5: when I we're out in the middle of nowhere and like,
- 9:51Speaker 5: I don't know, it's nice on a mental level to
- 9:54Speaker 5: just kind of strip that stuff away and focus on
- 9:57Speaker 5: people that you meet and the landscapes that you experience.
- 10:00Speaker 3: It's and kind of the tasks at hand.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just so much less stuff to worry about.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Kira, How have you found that seven years of living
- 10:08Speaker 1: like that has changed you as a person? How are
- 10:11Speaker 1: you a different Kira today than seven years ago?
- 10:13Speaker 5: I mean, I'm definitely I would say that, you know,
- 10:17Speaker 5: the minimalism obviously, now that we have a little bit
- 10:20Speaker 5: more of kind of a homestead in Arizona and Sonata,
- 10:23Speaker 5: I have more stuff than I had earlier on in
- 10:25Speaker 5: the travels. But I definitely am more thorough and thoughtful
- 10:29Speaker 5: about my choices in everything, and I care more about
- 10:34Speaker 5: the relationships that I have. I don't have time for
- 10:37Speaker 5: a lot of them, so they have to be really worthwhile,
- 10:41Speaker 5: you know. Just and you guys's travelers also probably know.
- 10:44Speaker 5: It's like it's not easy to just.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Maintain a thousand Facebook friendships.
- 10:48Speaker 5: And be really quality because I can hardly call my
- 10:51Speaker 5: best friend from high school, you know, all the time.
- 10:54Speaker 2: So then you're constantly meeting new people. Yeah, right, I
- 10:56Speaker 2: think that's one of the fun things of traveling, at
- 10:59Speaker 2: least for me. I think most travelers it's those connections
- 11:01Speaker 2: and those things that you meet on the road, and
- 11:03Speaker 2: I feel you with like the friends from high school,
- 11:05Speaker 2: like I feel bad, like I love I love a
- 11:07Speaker 2: lot of those people. Dearly. When you're just constantly going
- 11:10Speaker 2: and going and going, it almost just continues to separate
- 11:13Speaker 2: your life from that of a normal one. Yeah, it
- 11:15Speaker 2: makes it harder to but it makes it so hard
- 11:18Speaker 2: to relate.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Does that make it difficult to relate back to those
- 11:21Speaker 1: older relationships because now they're maybe they are doing the
- 11:24Speaker 1: more of the suburban path, which is not a bad thing.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I No, it can be a beautiful thing in many
- 11:30Speaker 1: ways too. So you finding that your Your relationships are
- 11:33Speaker 1: also changing because you need to relate more to the
- 11:36Speaker 1: people that you're with.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Yes, I mean well when it comes to the very
- 11:39Speaker 5: few people that I do keep in contact with from
- 11:43Speaker 5: you know, past life sort of thing. Yes, there's a
- 11:45Speaker 5: huge divide I think in what we do. But as
- 11:48Speaker 5: long as you're genuinely interested in that person, it gives me,
- 11:51Speaker 5: you know, my time to listen to them and get
- 11:54Speaker 5: to know what their life is about and hear their
- 11:56Speaker 5: their trials and tribulations, and if they want to hear
- 11:58Speaker 5: about mine, they can hear about it. Talk about it
- 12:00Speaker 5: a lot because we're obscure, so people ask about.
- 12:03Speaker 1: It a lot.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:03Speaker 5: Sure, And you know, I kind of get tired of
- 12:06Speaker 5: talking about what I'm doing, so it's nice to actually
- 12:08Speaker 5: hear what your friends are doing for like two hours.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Yeah, totally. Yeah, the other side, right, the grass on
- 12:14Speaker 1: the other side, Yeah, the grass is not greener inside.
- 12:18Speaker 1: We have really good lives.
- 12:19Speaker 3: I'm not going to complain.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't have a lot of I don't have
- 12:23Speaker 4: a lot of old friendships that I maintain. My best
- 12:26Speaker 4: friend is up in Seattle and he's doing He's doing
- 12:30Speaker 4: very well, especially considering where we all came from. And
- 12:33Speaker 4: the lifestyle that he's living is pretty normal. You know,
- 12:35Speaker 4: he's got a normal job, he's got a got a lady,
- 12:37Speaker 4: bought a house. No kids yet, but but.
- 12:40Speaker 3: It's what he wanted. It was like he reached his
- 12:42Speaker 3: goals and so you know, he's happy.
- 12:44Speaker 4: With He actually came down and saw us memory all
- 12:46Speaker 4: day weekend in Mexico. We had to we had to
- 12:48Speaker 4: sneak him in and because they had military had closed
- 12:51Speaker 4: off the highway sure, and we went over the border,
- 12:53Speaker 4: picked him up in San Diego, came back over the
- 12:55Speaker 4: border coming in and Sonata they wouldn't let us in
- 12:57Speaker 4: and all of our stuff was there, you know, our car, everything,
- 13:00Speaker 4: So we had to take some back roads to the
- 13:01Speaker 4: to the VIAT to get him in. But you know,
- 13:03Speaker 4: but he's you know, he's willing to do that. He's
- 13:05Speaker 4: willing to jump on a plane flight down to San
- 13:06Speaker 4: Diego and sneak into Mexico to hang out with me. Yeah,
- 13:09Speaker 4: and you know, we don't have anything in common in
- 13:12Speaker 4: the general sense anymore.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I mean, he yeah, you just care about each other.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he likes you know, he likes fishing
- 13:16Speaker 4: and barbecuing and watching football, on Sunday and.
- 13:18Speaker 2: That's sometimes that's really nice.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I talk about that all the time.
- 13:22Speaker 4: I'd love to just like sit at home and eat
- 13:25Speaker 4: a pack of Oreos and do nothing.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Well, I think. I think one of the interesting things
- 13:28Speaker 2: with COVID is so many travelers have been able to
- 13:31Speaker 2: try out that normal nine to five life. Like I've
- 13:33Speaker 2: found myself like, oh, I want to watch football on Sunday. Yeah,
- 13:37Speaker 2: that sounds that sounds great. They have those triumphant horn
- 13:40Speaker 2: music and it's really it's like a it's like an event,
- 13:43Speaker 2: but man, like so true, you guys have been able
- 13:47Speaker 2: to kind of keep it going. Like I feel like
- 13:49Speaker 2: one of the things that I really respect about you
- 13:51Speaker 2: is you've found a way to kind of ethically and
- 13:54Speaker 2: sustainably still explore and live a life of adventure. I
- 13:58Speaker 2: guess during COVID, I mean, you guys were just in
- 14:00Speaker 2: Saudi Arabia for the Dakar rally, and then last year
- 14:04Speaker 2: you guys were in Peru, Peru for Dakar nineteen. Yeah,
- 14:08Speaker 2: end of twenty, so two years ago. I always get
- 14:11Speaker 2: Dakar confused because it starts like January first, January first,
- 14:15Speaker 2: and the Dakhar twenty twenty one, because it is twenty
- 14:17Speaker 2: twenty one, but my mind hasn't switched years.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Yet because we get there before the new year. Yeah,
- 14:24Speaker 3: oh sure, the new year wherever we're at, So it's yeah.
- 14:27Speaker 4: This year we flew out on Christmas.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Yeah, we flew about Christmas day to Saudi.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Well, we got quarantine in Dubai for a day and
- 14:36Speaker 4: then and then ended up night it wasn't yeah, and
- 14:38Speaker 4: then ended up in Rio for jetta or quarantine for
- 14:42Speaker 4: two days in Jedda and.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Like five I think we took more COVID tests before
- 14:48Speaker 5: we could.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Even start the Dakar and then one on the way home.
- 14:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Yeah, we took like three COVID tests before getting on
- 14:54Speaker 4: the flight and then didn't.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Get the results back, so we went one wouldn't get
- 14:59Speaker 5: the results back in time, so we went to another one.
- 15:01Speaker 5: They wouldn't get it back in time, so we went
- 15:02Speaker 5: to another one like a mile down the street from
- 15:05Speaker 5: the Lax and then took a cab back and we
- 15:08Speaker 5: had like fifteen minutes before they wouldn't let us board.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Wow, it got really lucky.
- 15:12Speaker 4: I mean, everybody get getting to the dacre As it
- 15:14Speaker 4: was a nightmare. I mean the ASO makes like I'm
- 15:17Speaker 4: convinced that they set that up, like they make everything
- 15:20Speaker 4: difficult for you, like the entire process of getting today.
- 15:23Speaker 5: The safer that they get as a whole, the more
- 15:26Speaker 5: annoying that I have to make it because there has
- 15:28Speaker 5: to be some challenge left. So they're like, okay, well
- 15:30Speaker 5: we have the safety regulation, so instead we're going to
- 15:33Speaker 5: make you walk two miles to go the bathroom and
- 15:36Speaker 5: then another two miles to find food, and then not
- 15:39Speaker 5: tell you how to navigate through things.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Yeah, this year the bivouac was a little more condensed
- 15:44Speaker 4: than like in Peru it was it was like a jungle.
- 15:47Speaker 4: I mean, it would get lost. This year they set
- 15:49Speaker 4: it up the same every day, so you knew exactly
- 15:50Speaker 4: where things were.
- 15:52Speaker 2: That's clever.
- 15:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know why they did that.
- 15:55Speaker 4: I don't know why they hadn't done it before.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I guess is a better.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Question, what did you What did you think about that
- 16:00Speaker 1: now that since you've done the event in South America,
- 16:03Speaker 1: which the first time I went to the Dakar was
- 16:05Speaker 1: in South America, because it's different from when it was
- 16:08Speaker 1: in Africa. In South America, almost everyone has a car.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so I thought, I'm going to go check out
- 16:14Speaker 2: the Dakar.
- 16:14Speaker 1: So I get this Defender one ten and I drive
- 16:16Speaker 1: over from Santiago over the mountains and I'm trying to
- 16:19Speaker 1: get to the Decar. I could not even get close. Yeah,
- 16:22Speaker 1: Like there were so many people, so many locals. If
- 16:25Speaker 1: you were on a motorcycle, you'd be set, but in
- 16:27Speaker 1: a car, forget, we couldn't get close. So I turned
- 16:30Speaker 1: around and I went to Mendoza and drank wine for
- 16:32Speaker 1: two weeks.
- 16:33Speaker 2: So it turned out just fun. Watched the car from
- 16:37Speaker 2: the helicopters.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 16:39Speaker 4: When it was in Peru in nineteen when we went,
- 16:42Speaker 4: there were like three hundred thousand people at the start.
- 16:45Speaker 3: It was so packed that they were starting to have riots.
- 16:47Speaker 5: Justin and I at separate occasions, were almost we were
- 16:50Speaker 5: getting caught into riots, and like it was so packed,
- 16:52Speaker 5: people would hold their babies over their heads so they
- 16:54Speaker 5: wouldn't get crushed.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Wow, crowd.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it was completely I actually escaped all of that
- 17:00Speaker 4: sea of Max Eddie and Robbie Gordon. Robbie Gordon came
- 17:02Speaker 4: out of nowhere and everybody was like moving out of
- 17:05Speaker 4: the way to get a photo of.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Him and he's like, you want to come with us?
- 17:09Speaker 4: Sounds like yeah, help get me out of here, and
- 17:12Speaker 4: everybody just it was like parting the Red Sea because
- 17:14Speaker 4: everybody was backing up to try and get a photo
- 17:15Speaker 4: of him, and that was like.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Being a soccer match and just trying to crush each other.
- 17:19Speaker 4: There's nuts. And then going from that to Saudi Is
- 17:23Speaker 4: I mean it's crickets. Yeah, I mean, obviously COVID's going on,
- 17:26Speaker 4: but yeah, they were hard. There's hardly anybody there.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Am I the only one that thinks that sounds lovely?
- 17:32Speaker 3: I mean it was pretty nice to walk around.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Although we went to the Silk Away Rally in July of.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Last year, and that's in Mongolia Russia.
- 17:40Speaker 4: It starts with Russia.
- 17:41Speaker 3: It changes every year, so it always starts rush there.
- 17:45Speaker 5: It was Russia through Mongolia to China. It was last
- 17:49Speaker 5: year was supposed to be their tenth anniversary, so they
- 17:51Speaker 5: were going to do something like France to Moscow to
- 17:54Speaker 5: China to Mongolia, all this crazy route and maybe to
- 17:58Speaker 5: a couple of the stands this year.
- 17:59Speaker 3: I'm not I'm really sure what the rat is, but.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Yeah, we don't know yet.
- 18:02Speaker 2: They haven't announced thereout so you guys have done Dakkar
- 18:04Speaker 2: in South America. You've done Dakkar and Saudi obviously this
- 18:09Speaker 2: year you've done silk Away, You've done when you were
- 18:12Speaker 2: the photographer for the Baja Rally for Bolting for quite
- 18:15Speaker 2: a while, for Sonora rally.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Ye, I mean that's went to the Sardinia Rally.
- 18:19Speaker 2: That was I remember that. I was so jealous.
- 18:22Speaker 4: I was like, any any reason to go to Sardinia's reason?
- 18:24Speaker 4: Yeah the place it was the last time you and
- 18:26Speaker 4: I Yeah, actually yeah, the last time I was there
- 18:28Speaker 4: was with you.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Yeah, so jealous for the GUCSI.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah, when we're there for that TT eighty five watch
- 18:33Speaker 1: while everybody else was doing whatever they were doing, we
- 18:35Speaker 1: grabbed like this three cylinder rental car and drove around.
- 18:39Speaker 2: It was perfect.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Oh yeah, it's great, great. Yeah, I went and found
- 18:41Speaker 4: some ruins.
- 18:42Speaker 2: That was awesome.
- 18:43Speaker 3: That's why I like the small, more intimate races. I'm
- 18:46Speaker 3: not gonna lie.
- 18:46Speaker 5: They're way more fun than going to the deck our deck.
- 18:49Speaker 5: I was just suffering. But if you want to experience
- 18:52Speaker 5: a rally like you go to the Sardinia Rally, you
- 18:54Speaker 5: go to Morocco, you do Reese, like go somewhere you
- 18:57Speaker 5: want to experience the culture, and yeah, take a vacation
- 19:01Speaker 5: and then go.
- 19:01Speaker 2: That car seems hard, Like that car seems hard as
- 19:04Speaker 2: media as you guys were there, dak car seems hard
- 19:06Speaker 2: on the cruise. Yes, yeah, you know I remember watching
- 19:10Speaker 2: that the vlog series that Lyndon Poska did. Yeah, or
- 19:14Speaker 2: he was in that what was the name of the
- 19:16Speaker 2: class Malle moment and this dude's like, has just ridden
- 19:21Speaker 2: twelve or fourteen hours on a motorcycle at race pace
- 19:23Speaker 2: and now he's sleeping next three feet from a generator. Yeah,
- 19:26Speaker 2: and I'm like, Nope, we're not cut out for this.
- 19:29Speaker 4: No, Malamoto is definitely the that's that's like the champion car.
- 19:33Speaker 4: That's that's real Dakar.
- 19:34Speaker 5: That's what the original Dakar was kind of framed around,
- 19:37Speaker 5: is like what you can fit in this box. You're
- 19:39Speaker 5: completely unsupported, you take care of yourself. But then it
- 19:42Speaker 5: was in Africa, So in South America, I'm not going
- 19:45Speaker 5: to say it was easier, but race friends of ours
- 19:47Speaker 5: are like, it's.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Easier, yeah, yeah, sure, yeah, interesting, but.
- 19:50Speaker 5: It's still like and back in Saudi it's it's another
- 19:54Speaker 5: new challenging terrain and it's still very, very hard.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I'm amazed by the variety of terrain that Saudi Arabia offers.
- 20:02Speaker 2: I mean, I guess rather ignorantly, I've always thought Ksa
- 20:05Speaker 2: was desert sand with sand dunes.
- 20:07Speaker 3: I thought it was Yeah, it's what you saw.
- 20:10Speaker 4: I mean, the empty quarter of the southern half is yeah.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Yeah. And then and then we have a mutual friend,
- 20:15Speaker 2: Leuiah Shelley. I know he's probably listening to this. I'm
- 20:17Speaker 2: sorry if I what you're your name, But the stuff
- 20:21Speaker 2: he posts and the stuff that posts me, it's like, oh,
- 20:24Speaker 2: look here's Moab, but it's twice the size and there's
- 20:27Speaker 2: no one there.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, yeah, it's I mean, I've always heard
- 20:31Speaker 5: that the Middle East has some incredible untouched landscape, and
- 20:34Speaker 5: I've always been very curious. Yeah, and rightfully so, because
- 20:38Speaker 5: Saudi had some of the most incredible, diverse and just
- 20:43Speaker 5: surprising landscape that you never see.
- 20:45Speaker 2: And as a as a as a woman traveling there,
- 20:48Speaker 2: they've you know, I think it's worthwhile prefacing that I
- 20:51Speaker 2: personally feel Saudi has made, you know, huge huge steps
- 20:55Speaker 2: and rights for women and modernization and things. I mean,
- 20:59Speaker 2: you have to take an the contest that they really
- 21:01Speaker 2: are making a lot of progress comparatively, there's probably things
- 21:04Speaker 2: that still aren't right by Western standards. It's a different culture.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Well, we've talked about what we've heard, and I've talked
- 21:09Speaker 4: about this in numerous people like you have to remember
- 21:11Speaker 4: that this is a culture that's thousands of years old, yea,
- 21:13Speaker 4: and they've been doing stuff. Yeah, they've been closed on
- 21:15Speaker 4: many years like these, So any any step is a
- 21:17Speaker 4: big step for them. And the fact that they've crown princes,
- 21:20Speaker 4: he's got his project twenty thirty and he's trying to
- 21:23Speaker 4: open the country for tourism by twenty thirty and treat
- 21:26Speaker 4: it like another Dubai and other emirates, you know, effectively.
- 21:30Speaker 5: And for whatever the government's faults are, the people there
- 21:33Speaker 5: are still open to new ideas and interested and like
- 21:36Speaker 5: they were extremely curious about us why.
- 21:39Speaker 3: We were there.
- 21:39Speaker 5: They were very supportive, very giving, I mean, their culture,
- 21:43Speaker 5: they're known for being great housets, yes, and so it's
- 21:47Speaker 5: just it's something that if you don't go there and
- 21:49Speaker 5: if you listen to what people tell you, you won't
- 21:52Speaker 5: get the chance to experience how good those people are
- 21:55Speaker 5: and how cool the culture is, I mean, and you know,
- 21:59Speaker 5: as a woman. I'm sure we'll get into it. It's
- 22:01Speaker 5: just like I was stressing over what I'm supposed to wear,
- 22:04Speaker 5: what how I'm supposed to act, especially you know, by myself,
- 22:07Speaker 5: because he and I'll be separated.
- 22:09Speaker 3: At first, I wore.
- 22:10Speaker 5: The abaya and I covered my hair and don't thought
- 22:13Speaker 5: anything of it. And then slowly I just started to
- 22:17Speaker 5: see where my limits were and I never really I
- 22:21Speaker 5: was never bothered, so no one seemed to care.
- 22:23Speaker 3: They'd still maybe it's because I was with a race.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Team that they were maybe forgiving because they put like,
- 22:29Speaker 5: for instance, their celebrities are in a different status, they
- 22:32Speaker 5: might show up and without their hair covered in more
- 22:34Speaker 5: scantly cloud comparatively. But for me, I never felt like
- 22:39Speaker 5: I was an outsider necessarily. People still talk to me,
- 22:42Speaker 5: they still ask questions. They never looked me up and
- 22:45Speaker 5: down as if I wasn't appropriate. I didn't feel that way.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Yeah, we met some. We met some very interesting Like
- 22:52Speaker 4: I was in the middle of the desert first or
- 22:54Speaker 4: second stage, ran into a guy named Nassar. He's a
- 22:57Speaker 4: little bit younger than me, and he was wondering what
- 23:00Speaker 4: I was doing in the middle of the desert. And
- 23:01Speaker 4: I equally, so I'm like, how are you out here?
- 23:03Speaker 4: And he's he's like a computer, you know, he works
- 23:06Speaker 4: in it in Riod, and we were on the opposite
- 23:08Speaker 4: side of the country, and he had taken his two
- 23:11Speaker 4: week vacation from work to go chase the Dakar around
- 23:14Speaker 4: all of Saudi and he'd never he'd never seen most
- 23:16Speaker 4: of his own country, just you know, naturally, and and
- 23:19Speaker 4: so he.
- 23:20Speaker 3: He loves cars, so he's like, this is perfect.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah, cars. Yeah.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Like he and I spent like two and a half
- 23:25Speaker 4: three hours in the desert together just hanging out and talking,
- 23:28Speaker 4: me trying to get a better understanding of what being
- 23:30Speaker 4: a thirty something is like in Riod and he, you know,
- 23:33Speaker 4: we start chatting on social media and stuff. Throughout the race.
- 23:36Speaker 4: He's sending me photos. He ended up coming back to
- 23:39Speaker 4: Jetta at the finish and meet us. He met us
- 23:41Speaker 4: at our hotel and brought us like eggs of dates
- 23:43Speaker 4: and hung out.
- 23:44Speaker 2: And oh wonderful. That's amazing.
- 23:46Speaker 4: He's really into RC cars and yes, yeah, yeah, he's
- 23:51Speaker 4: a cool dude, like out of nowhere. And I mean
- 23:53Speaker 4: that's just the kind of stuff that.
- 23:54Speaker 2: I mean, the whole GCC is car crazy, right, So
- 23:57Speaker 2: I think as car and motorcycle people, there's just that
- 24:00Speaker 2: instant connection like every time I've been there, Like I
- 24:03Speaker 2: remember a man that's probably seven or eight years ago
- 24:05Speaker 2: and I spoke at the du Bui Travelers Festival. I
- 24:08Speaker 2: think you remember that. The people I met there were
- 24:10Speaker 2: just like just truthfully wonderful people. I think, like the
- 24:14Speaker 2: Crown Prince lent us a bus from his camel Racing club.
- 24:20Speaker 2: It's a real deal.
- 24:21Speaker 3: If if it wasn't for COVID, I would have been
- 24:23Speaker 3: there for sure.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Front row, well, they had like those little arc car
- 24:27Speaker 2: guys and they like hit on their phones and like
- 24:30Speaker 2: you know, like the little the little RC man hits
- 24:32Speaker 2: the camel gently. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Well, And for those that are listening, it's just so
- 24:39Speaker 1: important as travelers that we are very very careful about
- 24:44Speaker 1: information about a country that comes from from mainstream news,
- 24:48Speaker 1: because that has they have an agenda of driving, traffic
- 24:51Speaker 1: and viewership and scary things sell right in that space.
- 24:56Speaker 2: And then we need to.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Be even more careful about getting advice about travel from
- 25:00Speaker 1: someone who has not been there. So in fact, it
- 25:03Speaker 1: should be dismissed out of hand because all you're doing
- 25:06Speaker 1: is you're getting all of that scary news stuff now
- 25:09Speaker 1: filtered through their own cognitive biases, and then now they're
- 25:12Speaker 1: telling you all the reasons why you're going to die
- 25:14Speaker 1: because you go to Ensenada, which is of course completely false.
- 25:18Speaker 1: So if we're looking to get information about traveling to
- 25:21Speaker 1: a place, get a hold of someone who's been there recently,
- 25:24Speaker 1: and someone who's a traveler, not a business person that
- 25:27Speaker 1: just happens to go to the cities. Talk to somebody
- 25:29Speaker 1: who's a traveler that loves travel, that's been there recently,
- 25:33Speaker 1: and you're going to get all the great info. You're
- 25:34Speaker 1: going to find out where the great restaurants are, the
- 25:37Speaker 1: taxi guy who like totally hooked him up for the
- 25:39Speaker 1: whole week and took him to see his family, And
- 25:41Speaker 1: those are the people you need to talk to. If
- 25:43Speaker 1: we drive our decisions off of what we see from media,
- 25:47Speaker 1: will be greatly misled.
- 25:49Speaker 4: So, yeah, that was our friend Austin Vince. There's a
- 25:52Speaker 4: statement he had made that you never listen to anyone
- 25:55Speaker 4: who hasn't done exactly what you're planning to do. Yeah,
- 25:58Speaker 4: unless they've done exactly what you're planning, you know, set
- 26:00Speaker 4: out to do.
- 26:01Speaker 5: It's a lot of past like perpetuated misinformation. Sure, and
- 26:05Speaker 5: it's unfortunate because so many great places are overlooked for
- 26:08Speaker 5: people who maybe want to begin, you know, as a novice,
- 26:12Speaker 5: begin traveling, begin seeing the world, and they start to
- 26:15Speaker 5: trap themselves in these normal patterns of tourism because they
- 26:19Speaker 5: don't they're too scared to venture off, and they keep
- 26:21Speaker 5: listening to people who've only gone to sands.
- 26:26Speaker 4: I mean, so Sonora, Mexico is a great example of that.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Doubts untouched. And I hate to tell people to go
- 26:33Speaker 4: there because I wanted.
- 26:33Speaker 2: To stay in touch, but it'll never go.
- 26:35Speaker 4: It's it really is an incredible place. Yeah, equally equally
- 26:39Speaker 4: so toa Aha in its own way and very different,
- 26:41Speaker 4: very different than the rest of Mexico. And it is
- 26:44Speaker 4: a border you know, and it is a border state,
- 26:46Speaker 4: and you know that comes with its own issues.
- 26:48Speaker 2: You just have to be careful. Yeah, you just have
- 26:50Speaker 2: to be mindful. Don't go looking for the target.
- 26:53Speaker 5: Yeah, don't ask for drugs places, that's number one.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Don't buy drugs in Tijuana. Yeah, by them.
- 27:00Speaker 4: I was telling about quit trying to buy weed when
- 27:02Speaker 4: you know you just don't like quit doing that.
- 27:04Speaker 2: I just got a little line already, just like they
- 27:06Speaker 2: have this great thing called Tequila. Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, that one little stretch of coast between
- 27:13Speaker 1: Rocky Point where doing Pinasco and a golf at the
- 27:17Speaker 1: Santa Clara Like no one know, well they do now
- 27:20Speaker 1: because we're just telling you a couple yea tens of
- 27:23Speaker 1: thousands of people, but that if you want to get
- 27:25Speaker 1: away from the traffic of Baja coastline, that is a
- 27:28Speaker 1: really neat spot and there's an easy road to get
- 27:32Speaker 1: back to either city. But you can also drive along
- 27:34Speaker 1: the coast and there's great camping.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Gulf is a very it's scary.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Don't go there. Don't still my beautiful pristine beach spots.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Scar which is a really progressive and cool town.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Yeah, that's another very cool, very cool.
- 27:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:47Speaker 3: I mean they're the insign out of a Sonora.
- 27:49Speaker 5: So they've got the good food, they've got the youth
- 27:52Speaker 5: that brings the art and brings the new cultures and
- 27:54Speaker 5: brings the new ideas.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm really excited for for where Mexico is going.
- 27:59Speaker 2: I mean, I think the more you travel there, the
- 28:01Speaker 2: more you start to see smaller houses turning into bigger
- 28:04Speaker 2: houses shacks turning into developments. And maybe that wasn't the
- 28:08Speaker 2: right way to say that, but there's progression, I guess.
- 28:10Speaker 4: And they're making a lot of stuff. Well, they can
- 28:12Speaker 4: make a lot of the way the United States was
- 28:14Speaker 4: in the you know, the twenties and thirties, we were
- 28:16Speaker 4: producing and Mexico's producing.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Yeah, they are well.
- 28:19Speaker 5: On the Internet allows this accessibility as an entrepreneur, as
- 28:23Speaker 5: an artist is putting yourself out there. And you know,
- 28:26Speaker 5: our generations and gen X, we really grasp technology and
- 28:30Speaker 5: made something out of it. And Mexico's no difference, and
- 28:33Speaker 5: you know the rest of the world as long as
- 28:34Speaker 5: they have the Internet, they can do something.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Yeah, they can multiply themselves, extend their audience very quickly. Yeah,
- 28:41Speaker 1: I guess. Along that line, talk a little bit about
- 28:43Speaker 1: what it is that you guys do, like what's the
- 28:46Speaker 1: what is the rolodex of things that you guys do
- 28:49Speaker 1: to make money to stay on the road.
- 28:51Speaker 5: I mean, anything that someone will pay us for usually
- 28:54Speaker 5: is a good start.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Let's just stop there. That is going out on the internet.
- 29:01Speaker 4: I think on paper, we own a multimedia company and
- 29:05Speaker 4: we create content for the motorcycle industry. The motorsports, industry, travel, travel.
- 29:11Speaker 4: We you know, we do photo editorial, we we shoult video.
- 29:14Speaker 3: We I mean, we'll do your book lay out.
- 29:16Speaker 5: We'll help you with your website, We'll give you consultation
- 29:18Speaker 5: on PR, social media marketing. I mean, anything that requires
- 29:23Speaker 5: imagination in a sense for branding, we try to help with.
- 29:27Speaker 2: And I love your branding too, Like the West by
- 29:29Speaker 2: one thousand logo is just perfect. Photography is great, the
- 29:33Speaker 2: writing's great.
- 29:33Speaker 4: It's our buddy Asher. He told you he was adamant
- 29:36Speaker 4: on the fact that it needed to say nothing like
- 29:38Speaker 4: a good A good logo shouldn't say anything like the
- 29:41Speaker 4: Nike swish. You know, yeah, for sure, you know exactly
- 29:44Speaker 4: what it is.
- 29:44Speaker 1: And you guys have done big social media management campaigns
- 29:48Speaker 1: for recognizable brands like tour Tech comes to mind.
- 29:52Speaker 2: What are some of the other clients that you guys
- 29:54Speaker 2: have worked with.
- 29:54Speaker 4: That Country Discovery Routes, Wolfman, Luggage, Butler, Butler.
- 29:58Speaker 5: Maps, Yeah, black Dog Kirk black Dog.
- 30:02Speaker 4: Yeah, he's he's speak speaking about he's somebody.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Who's is he's living down there, He's down.
- 30:06Speaker 4: There half the time.
- 30:07Speaker 5: It's and we actually just started working with Camel Adventure,
- 30:10Speaker 5: which is they're a really cool company. They've really broadened
- 30:13Speaker 5: their horizons to since when we first met them and
- 30:15Speaker 5: they were still camel tanks and they've been really expanding
- 30:19Speaker 5: a lot on product that they make.
- 30:20Speaker 1: And those tanks are great. Those are it's a great
- 30:22Speaker 1: way to add some range. Yeah, absolutely, very clever design,
- 30:26Speaker 1: very cool design. Actually, I really like it.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:28Speaker 4: We've done a lot, a lot with in the motive
- 30:30Speaker 4: then in the adventure motorcycle space in terms of social
- 30:32Speaker 4: media management, marketing and that sort of thing. That's that's been.
- 30:36Speaker 3: As welcoming to us.
- 30:37Speaker 5: So we just we like to go smaller, you know,
- 30:40Speaker 5: like a few small projects at a time or clients
- 30:43Speaker 5: at the time to at least, you know, don't put
- 30:46Speaker 5: all your eggs in one basket sort of thing. Yeah,
- 30:48Speaker 5: they don't ask too much of us, We don't ask
- 30:50Speaker 5: too much of them.
- 30:50Speaker 3: We all stay pretty fluid.
- 30:51Speaker 4: We've been doing a lot in the UTV space really
- 30:54Speaker 4: just it's i mean, it's it is.
- 30:56Speaker 2: What it is exploding up and it's exploding our trails.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the different But I mean should be honest,
- 31:03Speaker 4: like i've you know, I came into it. They were
- 31:05Speaker 4: golf carts as far as I was concerned and powered
- 31:07Speaker 4: by vacuums and yeah, and they sounds so terrible.
- 31:10Speaker 1: So they can just if they can just fix the sound.
- 31:15Speaker 2: So it's all they got to.
- 31:16Speaker 5: Do is I'll just a stereo that plays V eight
- 31:18Speaker 5: noises while they're driving.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Yeah, they just got to fix. All they got to
- 31:21Speaker 2: do is fix the sound.
- 31:23Speaker 4: I was in the one that fixed it. I I
- 31:24Speaker 4: was just in the the Yamaha one thousand. I forget iteration,
- 31:28Speaker 4: alpha numeric designation, you know, y z X y ror
- 31:31Speaker 4: whatever I did. We're doing a story about it. A
- 31:33Speaker 4: friend took a took the new Yamaha one thousand. It's
- 31:35Speaker 4: basically an R one motor out of the motorcycle with
- 31:39Speaker 4: a big turbo.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Piqued my interest. Makes a hundred turbo.
- 31:42Speaker 4: With a turbo makes makes between one hundred and sixty
- 31:44Speaker 4: five and two hundred and thirty five horse power, depending
- 31:45Speaker 4: on how much boost you running through it. His iteration
- 31:48Speaker 4: has you know, he's he's got a bunch of suspension
- 31:50Speaker 4: work and stuff done, but it sounds insane. It's it
- 31:53Speaker 4: has a sequential gearbox, so it's flappy paddles the car.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Stuff it's he's got.
- 31:57Speaker 3: And he put his skin on it that makes it
- 31:58Speaker 3: look like a baby wraptor.
- 32:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's got five with like the Volkswagens, and they
- 32:04Speaker 4: put like little sequential gearbox. It's he's got twenty five
- 32:08Speaker 4: inches of travel with the rear twenty three at the front.
- 32:10Speaker 4: We rallied that thing yesterday on Sunday. I guess. I
- 32:13Speaker 4: mean it's it's like a trophy truck. It's it literally
- 32:15Speaker 4: acts and feels like a trophy truck.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Wow.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Nuts, and one's so bad.
- 32:20Speaker 4: Yeah, And that's the only first. It's the first one
- 32:22Speaker 4: that I've been fully convinced to make. I need, I
- 32:24Speaker 4: need something interesting.
- 32:25Speaker 5: He had some some noises of it on his stories
- 32:28Speaker 5: on Instagram.
- 32:32Speaker 2: And where can we find you on Insta?
- 32:35Speaker 4: Just my name justin w coffee.
- 32:37Speaker 2: And that's not coffee, it's coffee with a Y C
- 32:40Speaker 2: F F E y. Thank you.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, it was. That thing's amazing. And I mean
- 32:44Speaker 4: I've been in the I've been in all of them.
- 32:46Speaker 4: Now that the new can Am Turbo, the Polaris, you know,
- 32:49Speaker 4: big turbo stuff and is pretty wild.
- 32:52Speaker 1: But I still think that it really is an issue
- 32:55Speaker 1: with the noise and if they don't I as an industry,
- 33:00Speaker 1: they don't take the thirteen year old petulance out of it.
- 33:04Speaker 1: They're going to lose the opportunity that's coming. Just make
- 33:07Speaker 1: them quiet, because like it's a big deal, Like people
- 33:11Speaker 1: don't want them around their homes.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Doesn't Moab just canceled rally in the Rocks because the
- 33:15Speaker 2: town quite literally said we don't want you in.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Fact, and I think they just need to make them quiet,
- 33:22Speaker 1: like everything else needs to be quiet and is supposed
- 33:24Speaker 1: to be quiet because it's not just about you. There's
- 33:27Speaker 1: like other people trying to live around you. Stop being
- 33:29Speaker 1: so selfish and make your thing quiet. Yeah, make it quiet,
- 33:33Speaker 1: Make it quiet, take it.
- 33:34Speaker 2: I'll take a contrary point of view in this. Make
- 33:36Speaker 2: them not sound terrible, less vacuusly, like like I don't
- 33:41Speaker 2: really like hearing Harley's go by because they sound like,
- 33:44Speaker 2: I don't know, they sound like combustion potato. Yeah, but
- 33:49Speaker 2: there are good engines.
- 33:50Speaker 4: Yeah. Make it sound good.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Yeah, make it sound good. Branger just was launched so earlier.
- 33:55Speaker 2: You guys mentioned you lived in Japan. Tell me about that. Yeah,
- 33:59Speaker 2: that's wild.
- 34:00Speaker 5: Well we were lucky because again, it was one of
- 34:03Speaker 5: those opportunities that just came and was placed on our laps.
- 34:07Speaker 5: A friend of ours and his wife. She's in the
- 34:10Speaker 5: military or in the Air Force, and they moved to
- 34:13Speaker 5: Japan recently at the time, this was like late twenty fourteen. Yeah,
- 34:17Speaker 5: they had a nice big house on the Yakota Air
- 34:20Speaker 5: Force Base and said, hey, anytime you want come out,
- 34:23Speaker 5: hang out for how oliver, however long you want a
- 34:25Speaker 5: stake on their part because we were there for like
- 34:27Speaker 5: five six.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Months, I've made that mistake. Travelers come for Thanksgiving, Yeah,
- 34:34Speaker 2: and then you kicked them out.
- 34:35Speaker 4: And he was a friend of mine who he was
- 34:38Speaker 4: trying to be a filmmaker and he was met this
- 34:42Speaker 4: group of motorcyclists, expat motorcyclists that were exploring abandoned towns, villages.
- 34:48Speaker 3: They're called haikios.
- 34:50Speaker 4: Fascinating stuff, and most of that you can only get
- 34:54Speaker 4: to on a motor A lot of it you can
- 34:55Speaker 4: only get to on a motorcycle or it's much easier,
- 34:58Speaker 4: you know, either on foot or on sport of some kind.
- 35:00Speaker 4: And so he wanted to film something about that and
- 35:03Speaker 4: wanted us to come along, and so we did create
- 35:05Speaker 4: some content for that and we ended up there a
- 35:07Speaker 4: lot longer. We got lucky the Security Force commander for
- 35:10Speaker 4: the Coda Airbase was his neighbor and good friends and
- 35:13Speaker 4: a good friend, and so normally you're, you know, after
- 35:16Speaker 4: thirty days, you got to take a hike, sure, but
- 35:18Speaker 4: he just would sign us in for another thirty days.
- 35:21Speaker 4: And so he's retired now, so I don't think he
- 35:24Speaker 4: can get in.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Trouble for them. But I think that's a pretty a
- 35:26Speaker 2: pretty minor thing.
- 35:27Speaker 4: Yeah. So yeah, we ended up there a lot longer
- 35:30Speaker 4: than we anticipated and did a lot of cool stuff.
- 35:33Speaker 4: Traveled from there to the Philippines and when.
- 35:35Speaker 3: We went to Sardinia, we were coming from Japan.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, came back to the States once.
- 35:39Speaker 4: I believe at least once I went back to the
- 35:41Speaker 4: States for the tur Tech Rally actually, but yeah, I
- 35:43Speaker 4: mean we spent pretty much all of our time there riding,
- 35:46Speaker 4: riding motorcycles or surfing.
- 35:47Speaker 3: It was we'd surf, like did actually do a lot of.
- 35:50Speaker 4: Surf, like three days a week, and then whoa and
- 35:52Speaker 4: then ride these dual sports around.
- 35:54Speaker 5: We ended up, I mean, they have some really great ways,
- 35:56Speaker 5: especially because we like long boards. I'm still just a
- 35:58Speaker 5: paddle around and then I paddle after something and then
- 36:01Speaker 5: it misses me and then he serves, and it's just
- 36:05Speaker 5: like it's a bigger culture than we expected. And there's
- 36:07Speaker 5: this like huge Americana motorcycle culture that we didn't expect.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Either, And Moon Eyes has a show there, like a
- 36:14Speaker 4: big Chopper show.
- 36:15Speaker 2: It's a big oh yeah. Do you got to see
- 36:17Speaker 2: those like the rad like nineties or eighties scooters that
- 36:21Speaker 2: were like super crazy or maybe.
- 36:23Speaker 5: That was ghost ghost of Yeah, yeseed, I love Japan.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Japan actually scares me more than Saudi Arabia though, because
- 36:31Speaker 2: nothing is sized appropriately from me in sixth three. I
- 36:34Speaker 2: think he's going to cause you some kind of physical once.
- 36:37Speaker 2: I once was at like a Oudon noodle restaurant and
- 36:41Speaker 2: I stood up and the chair went with me and
- 36:44Speaker 2: and and then the chair fell over. And I'm pretty
- 36:46Speaker 2: sure I offended someone's grandmother fourteen times because the restaurant
- 36:51Speaker 2: like it's completely hushed stopped. Yeah.
- 36:53Speaker 5: That is an interesting thing about their culture is that
- 36:56Speaker 5: I actually felt more aware of myself hand because they
- 37:01Speaker 5: have such strict cultural regulations for themselves, like which is
- 37:06Speaker 5: actually why we got away with so much, because they
- 37:09Speaker 5: think guid gins are dumb. We're just animals. So you know,
- 37:13Speaker 5: if they we would go exploring around the mountains. Let's
- 37:16Speaker 5: say there's like it's closed down. Mind they put a
- 37:18Speaker 5: sheet that says please don't go in here, and no
- 37:21Speaker 5: one from the country will go in there.
- 37:23Speaker 3: Except for expats. And they see it and they're like, oh,
- 37:26Speaker 3: I'll just lift the sheet and go through.
- 37:28Speaker 4: In the US be gated, you know, there'd be electric
- 37:30Speaker 4: fence and danger you're gonna die and get sued and
- 37:33Speaker 4: all that. And they're literally just like a tarp like,
- 37:35Speaker 4: please don't go in here. And they're like, okay, yeah,
- 37:37Speaker 4: we won't go in there. And we're like, wait a minute.
- 37:40Speaker 2: What's behind we got to go built into?
- 37:44Speaker 5: And they forgave us for like anything that we do
- 37:47Speaker 5: because they're just like, well, you guys don't know any better.
- 37:49Speaker 3: It's okay.
- 37:50Speaker 2: But they're wonderful people. I think it's it's one of
- 37:52Speaker 2: the few places I've traveled where people will actively come
- 37:55Speaker 2: up to you and ask if you need help, totally
- 37:58Speaker 2: just like I don't know how many times I've been
- 37:59Speaker 2: on like, you know, a subway in Kyoto or Oska
- 38:04Speaker 2: or something and I'm just like help, which, by.
- 38:06Speaker 3: The way, is the most confusing thing to do.
- 38:09Speaker 2: I've kind of figured out in Tokyo, but then I haven't, like,
- 38:12Speaker 2: I don't know how it works. I don't.
- 38:14Speaker 5: I think Tokyo is hard because you have to catch
- 38:16Speaker 5: so many networks of trains.
- 38:18Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, and they're happening like it's not like it's
- 38:21Speaker 1: the one train that's coming in fifteen minutes. It's the
- 38:23Speaker 1: one train that's coming in fifteen seconds. Yeah, you've got
- 38:26Speaker 1: to and you have to be right on top of it.
- 38:28Speaker 1: And they are super helpful. And I remember the first
- 38:31Speaker 1: time I got on a train. I came on with
- 38:34Speaker 1: an elderly man. Three or four young people stood up
- 38:37Speaker 1: immediately to offer him.
- 38:39Speaker 2: That's what you're supposed to do. I'm in my background,
- 38:42Speaker 2: like like, I'm afraid she's gonna come out somewhere get
- 38:45Speaker 2: smack because if I don't get up. Yeah, yeah, and
- 38:47Speaker 2: you should.
- 38:48Speaker 1: But it's beautiful that that is still part of their culture,
- 38:51Speaker 1: that they have such respect for the elderly, and because
- 38:54Speaker 1: of that, the elderly live much longer, they have much
- 38:58Speaker 1: healthier lives for that longer period of time, they're much
- 39:02Speaker 1: more engaged with the family.
- 39:03Speaker 2: They're revered there.
- 39:05Speaker 1: You know, they're still intellectually challenged because their family comes
- 39:09Speaker 1: to them. With questions and engagement, and I think that
- 39:12Speaker 1: that's a really beautiful thing.
- 39:13Speaker 5: So family's Filipino, they have a similar value, maybe not
- 39:17Speaker 5: as strict as Japan's, but it's it's that like take
- 39:20Speaker 5: care of your own for as long as possible. Yeah,
- 39:23Speaker 5: come together, and it's just it's not necessarily that it's
- 39:26Speaker 5: an obligation. Yes, maybe on paper it's an obligation, but
- 39:29Speaker 5: it's like it's an honor to be able to get
- 39:31Speaker 5: to know those.
- 39:32Speaker 3: People as long as possible.
- 39:33Speaker 1: And they have so much wisdom. They've they've like made
- 39:35Speaker 1: all of those stupid mistakes. If like, if we would
- 39:38Speaker 1: talk to our elders a little more, we probably would
- 39:40Speaker 1: have less suffering in the world. If we just asked
- 39:43Speaker 1: them a couple of questions, they'd be like, oh, I
- 39:45Speaker 1: remember in nineteen sixty five, I did that thing and yeah,
- 39:48Speaker 1: that was not such a good you know program. So yeah,
- 39:51Speaker 1: I think that's really a beautiful part of Japan. And
- 39:53Speaker 1: how clean everything is, and I love that.
- 39:57Speaker 3: Yeah, thatsthroom's my favorite.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Yeah, clean back bathrooms. And the food is actually super
- 40:03Speaker 1: super great. It's expensive, but yes, although you can eat it.
- 40:06Speaker 5: Seven you know, survived off of seven eleven for the
- 40:10Speaker 5: most part.
- 40:10Speaker 3: Truck stops fantastic.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Is that how you guys did that?
- 40:13Speaker 1: Because I found that that Tokyo and Nagoya was like
- 40:17Speaker 1: Oslo level prices.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Prices, Yeah, we were what was your tricks around that?
- 40:22Speaker 4: Seven eleven? Literally seven eleven has like insane.
- 40:25Speaker 3: It's not like a seven eleven you'd see. Yeah, it's
- 40:28Speaker 3: anywhere else, you know, especially in the countryside. You've got
- 40:31Speaker 3: a lot of truck stops. You've got a lot of it's.
- 40:33Speaker 5: Because their weekends are like, it's weekend, let's go out
- 40:36Speaker 5: to the country and freeways. So the truck stops in
- 40:39Speaker 5: seven eleven type places, they have high quality food, Like
- 40:42Speaker 5: I literally got octopus and soybean salad at seven eleven.
- 40:47Speaker 3: We had they changed their kind of sushi mouths, things
- 40:50Speaker 3: like that.
- 40:50Speaker 5: In October it's it's like a squid month, so everything
- 40:54Speaker 5: is dyed black and yeh it's rice pucks.
- 40:57Speaker 4: I mean, can live on rice pucks. I mean we were
- 40:59Speaker 4: we were.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Traveling on triangle things.
- 41:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:01Speaker 2: So yeah, you told me about those things and I
- 41:04Speaker 2: went to a seven to eleven and I ate them
- 41:06Speaker 2: and they were bad even when I was drunk.
- 41:09Speaker 5: You may have gotten the wrong I mean, you have
- 41:11Speaker 5: to find the one with the right picture. He's allergic
- 41:13Speaker 5: to most fish, so he had to find the one
- 41:15Speaker 5: that said chicken or.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Like I had the one with tuna and it was
- 41:18Speaker 2: like eating cat food with bad rice mixed with seaweed.
- 41:22Speaker 4: They have one that has baby eels in this in
- 41:25Speaker 4: the center, and that's that's a fun surprise when you're
- 41:27Speaker 4: not trying to buy the one with baby eels.
- 41:29Speaker 2: And my experience in Japan has has been that the
- 41:33Speaker 2: food really wasn't that expensive. Maybe we were. I mean,
- 41:37Speaker 2: like I've had very expensive meals there, Like if you
- 41:39Speaker 2: try and go for proper sushi, it is it was expensive,
- 41:43Speaker 2: really really expensive. But you can you can have any
- 41:45Speaker 2: meal you want for seven dollars American roughly. I mean
- 41:48Speaker 2: if you're eating where you know, kind of maybe where
- 41:51Speaker 2: people do for lunch or whatnot.
- 41:53Speaker 4: They got lucky because no, no, they like soft serrve.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Oh god love soft serve.
- 41:58Speaker 2: So what's that serve that's at in Arita Airport. That's
- 42:02Speaker 2: basically butter, you know what I'm talking about.
- 42:04Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, Like even so there, vanilla is not vanilla.
- 42:07Speaker 5: It's like it's milk.
- 42:09Speaker 3: That's the flavor. They call it. Wow, that's like really
- 42:12Speaker 3: rich and thick.
- 42:14Speaker 5: And that was like my main goal at any truck
- 42:16Speaker 5: stuff was to get ice cream as much as possible.
- 42:20Speaker 3: I still look for it everywhere I go.
- 42:21Speaker 1: But oh, that's amazing. So at the end, Now, how
- 42:25Speaker 1: long were you in Japan total, Well, it.
- 42:27Speaker 4: Was over the course of nine months, and but we
- 42:29Speaker 4: were gone. We were in the Philippines I think for
- 42:31Speaker 4: like a month during that, okay, and then we were
- 42:33Speaker 4: in Italy for a few weeks in Sardinia, and then
- 42:36Speaker 4: I went back to the States for a few weeks.
- 42:38Speaker 2: And didn't you guys have Dacatti's In the Philippines, we.
- 42:42Speaker 4: Had Katie Duke three ninety I remember that, and this
- 42:45Speaker 4: weird two hundred c kawsaki that I've never seen before.
- 42:47Speaker 5: Front end was not so yeah, the head bowl was
- 42:50Speaker 5: wrote it anyway.
- 42:52Speaker 2: And then where where in the Philippines were you guys
- 42:54Speaker 2: that particular.
- 42:55Speaker 4: Time we were in? Oh? Were We ended up on
- 42:58Speaker 4: Plowing and then we were also in.
- 43:02Speaker 5: I have family like in Luzon and Minda now and
- 43:06Speaker 5: a little bit of Sebu, so we just kind of
- 43:07Speaker 5: hung around them, and then we went to Plowan because
- 43:10Speaker 5: that's like that's like the locals vacation retreat. There's Rock Eye,
- 43:15Speaker 5: which is like the travelers retreat. Allowands, don't go there,
- 43:18Speaker 5: it's terrible.
- 43:19Speaker 3: There you go, I think that's the local player.
- 43:21Speaker 4: Alnito's on the north end of Palowan and that's kind
- 43:24Speaker 4: of touristy gringo stuff. But the rest of that that
- 43:27Speaker 4: island is pretty undeveloped. And this sounds amazing. Yeah, like
- 43:31Speaker 4: actually for us.
- 43:32Speaker 5: Like literally what could be defined as paradise is actually
- 43:36Speaker 5: out a boat ride outside.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Of El Nino.
- 43:38Speaker 5: And thankfully I don't remember the name, so I won't
- 43:40Speaker 5: tell anybody.
- 43:41Speaker 1: This episode is supported in part by red Ox Manufacturing.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Since nineteen eighty six, red Ox Manufacturing has been handcrafting
- 43:49Speaker 1: the toughest soft sided travel luggage in the world. Bounded
- 43:52Speaker 1: and operated by second generation United States veterans, red Ox
- 43:55Speaker 1: Bags are backed by the industry's finest warranty, the Noble
- 43:59Speaker 1: Lifetime Warranty. You break it, will wonder how then we'll
- 44:02Speaker 1: repair it or replace it, no questions asked. Designed and
- 44:05Speaker 1: lovingly built with Pride and Buildings Montana, using ninety nine
- 44:08Speaker 1: percent American source materials, Redox Bags are unique and innovative
- 44:13Speaker 1: and tough as tanks. It's well, describe what paradise was like,
- 44:17Speaker 1: what about it made it paradise?
- 44:20Speaker 5: I mean, well, one, there's no way in, so it's
- 44:22Speaker 5: on a peninsula, but the peninsula is so thick with.
- 44:25Speaker 3: Jungle there's no roadways. Okay, so you have to boat.
- 44:27Speaker 5: And you know this the typical like semi shallow to
- 44:31Speaker 5: a shelf in the water. Everything's crystal blue, so you
- 44:35Speaker 5: can scuba. They have kayak rentals. The place that we
- 44:37Speaker 5: want is like a like five cottage resort run by
- 44:41Speaker 5: a family, so can't have a lot of people there.
- 44:43Speaker 5: So the beach is really secluded and it's built into
- 44:47Speaker 5: like a mangrove, so it's essentially like a giant tree
- 44:50Speaker 5: that kind of blocks this board walk in the trees
- 44:54Speaker 5: that you can walk.
- 44:54Speaker 3: Through, and it's not expensive all things considered.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Family, the family feeds you every day.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Well we sure to not put that in the show
- 45:01Speaker 2: notes and selfishly go there ourself.
- 45:04Speaker 4: They have a little like little shared bar shack that's
- 45:07Speaker 4: like right on the ocean. And the guy, the son
- 45:10Speaker 4: who runs the joint, basically he comes down there and
- 45:12Speaker 4: just like makes you run and cokes.
- 45:14Speaker 5: Yeah, you just turn email like what you want to
- 45:16Speaker 5: drink when you're there, And he's like, cool, I'll just
- 45:18Speaker 5: run in the store, you know, when you go and
- 45:20Speaker 5: do a trip downno grab groceries.
- 45:22Speaker 3: And come back.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Amazing. And how long did you guys stay there?
- 45:26Speaker 3: Think like a week? Yeah?
- 45:28Speaker 2: Oh wow, that was great. That sounds so with.
- 45:30Speaker 4: Her mom and her sister and her nephew and we
- 45:32Speaker 4: just it was basically us and then like an English
- 45:34Speaker 4: couple and we just hung out.
- 45:35Speaker 5: Yeah, and then they switched out for another couple that
- 45:38Speaker 5: didn't really care heavy around us too, so it worked
- 45:41Speaker 5: out right.
- 45:42Speaker 2: That sounds so perfect. That sounds so perfect.
- 45:44Speaker 4: Yeah, we were just in the Philippines. That was this.
- 45:47Speaker 3: We found that place the last time we were in
- 45:49Speaker 3: the Philippines. But had we known, we'd always go.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Where where else?
- 45:52Speaker 1: In your travels, have you had that same sense of
- 45:55Speaker 1: it being paradise? Is there anything else that comes to mind?
- 45:59Speaker 4: There's a there's a little hotel right in the center
- 46:01Speaker 4: center of the Baja Peninsula that has a has a
- 46:04Speaker 4: little like a little bar in the middle of it,
- 46:06Speaker 4: and the bar has like a really really terrible.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Old pool table.
- 46:09Speaker 4: How will it Yeah, it's it's in Katavinia and it's
- 46:13Speaker 4: it's an oasis. I mean you come in there and
- 46:16Speaker 4: it's like it looks like something out of like it's
- 46:18Speaker 4: really it's incredible.
- 46:20Speaker 2: And that area actually kind of looks like presk with
- 46:22Speaker 2: all the.
- 46:24Speaker 4: And that kind of stuff or like like like east
- 46:26Speaker 4: of San Diego, like alcohol in that area where they're
- 46:28Speaker 4: just all that stuff and you there's nothing there. There's
- 46:30Speaker 4: not even a gas I think they've been.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Is that new Pemex station finished?
- 46:33Speaker 5: Allegedly it was the last time we were, last time
- 46:37Speaker 5: I was working.
- 46:38Speaker 4: Yeah, so that prior to that it was. It made
- 46:40Speaker 4: it even better that there was no gas station. It
- 46:42Speaker 4: was just an old lady with gas cans. And but
- 46:44Speaker 4: that that bar. We we always talk about that bar
- 46:47Speaker 4: being like the like the Cantina and most Sizely and
- 46:50Speaker 4: Star Wars, like, yeah, the only people there are travelers.
- 46:53Speaker 4: No one lives, I mean, no one lives in the town,
- 46:55Speaker 4: even even even Danny who runs the bar there, he
- 46:57Speaker 4: lives forty five minutes away. Yeah, and so there's hardly
- 46:59Speaker 4: any when that lives there, and it's all travelers. And
- 47:02Speaker 4: any given day that you're there, you'll meet like you
- 47:05Speaker 4: never know what you're.
- 47:05Speaker 2: Gonna run into, you know what kind of place it
- 47:08Speaker 2: is by the stickers that are around. Yeah, and you
- 47:11Speaker 2: and you like you end up blotto off of Giant
- 47:14Speaker 2: Margerita shooting pool with truck drivers and it's just a
- 47:17Speaker 2: it has a very different sort of appeal than like
- 47:20Speaker 2: like a pristine beach, but it sounds perfect.
- 47:24Speaker 3: People like that stuff.
- 47:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's like when you're when you're on
- 47:27Speaker 4: a dirt bike trip and you just want to go
- 47:30Speaker 4: like sit by the and.
- 47:30Speaker 2: I love like the courtyards on that hotel where the
- 47:33Speaker 2: room's kind of facing. It's very I love.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Have you guys done the mission Santa Maria just out
- 47:41Speaker 1: of Katavina? You did that on dirt bikes.
- 47:44Speaker 4: We actually the last.
- 47:45Speaker 5: Time we were there was just this December and we
- 47:47Speaker 5: went with our friend Jeffy. We had done like a
- 47:50Speaker 5: little off road trip from it, so nodded down and
- 47:52Speaker 5: always to close off the date in sankantine Is we
- 47:55Speaker 5: just go do a sunset ride on the beach and
- 47:58Speaker 5: just like go fifteen miles one way, fifteen miles the
- 48:01Speaker 5: other way and then just like laugh and smile the
- 48:03Speaker 5: whole time taking Instagram videos.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Sure.
- 48:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I just buy like beach trips and baha, on
- 48:09Speaker 4: our dual sports. We were the tide. The tide had
- 48:11Speaker 4: just run out, so that the beaches like like look
- 48:14Speaker 4: like glass like glass was super good. That can't go
- 48:17Speaker 4: wrong with that.
- 48:17Speaker 2: That's pretty good stuff too.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Any other spots that come across your mind is those
- 48:21Speaker 1: moments of paradise.
- 48:22Speaker 3: It depends on your definition of paradise.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Well, I'm interested in yours because so far it's pretty amazing.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so far, I'm good with it.
- 48:30Speaker 5: Like i'd say, if if you're more of a like
- 48:33Speaker 5: a city dweller, Verona is one of my favorite places
- 48:36Speaker 5: to go.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Like I base it off of where would we live,
- 48:39Speaker 3: you know, where would.
- 48:40Speaker 5: We be willing to stay for a long period of time,
- 48:43Speaker 5: even if they're not really conducive to that. But Verona
- 48:46Speaker 5: is a it's an ancient town. It was where the
- 48:48Speaker 5: what do you call that, the.
- 48:50Speaker 4: Colisseum, and Verona is the is the Colisseum. It was
- 48:53Speaker 4: built before the Coliseum in Rome.
- 48:54Speaker 3: And it was the inspiration for the one.
- 48:56Speaker 4: So it looks it's like just a smaller version.
- 48:58Speaker 5: Yeah, and they just the old town is night closed
- 49:01Speaker 5: off by a river and it's really beautiful. The town's
- 49:04Speaker 5: very livable, it's very quiet, but it has a lot
- 49:06Speaker 5: of history and of course Italian things, food culture.
- 49:09Speaker 2: I heard the food. They have bad wine. The cars
- 49:12Speaker 2: are really ugly.
- 49:13Speaker 3: Never go super expense.
- 49:14Speaker 4: It's also twenty minutes from the dopest go kart track
- 49:18Speaker 4: on Earth. It's an indoor outdoor, two level gas powered
- 49:23Speaker 4: go kart track.
- 49:24Speaker 3: And it has a one it's a two minute lap too.
- 49:27Speaker 5: It's got like yes, and it has like a Mario
- 49:31Speaker 5: Kart style.
- 49:32Speaker 4: Like spiral coming down from the top level and you
- 49:37Speaker 4: just sideways the whole way down the face.
- 49:39Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 49:40Speaker 5: Actually, there's a few Italian it's a Formula one racers
- 49:44Speaker 5: who go in and they.
- 49:46Speaker 4: Just like yeah, there's a bar that like faces the track,
- 49:50Speaker 4: so when you're done you can just knock out some
- 49:52Speaker 4: cold beers where.
- 49:53Speaker 5: If you're Italian, when you're not done.
- 49:57Speaker 4: Our friend Manny Lukesey took us there and a three
- 50:00Speaker 4: years ago for the first time, and every time we're
- 50:02Speaker 4: in Verona to hang out with him, we have to
- 50:03Speaker 4: go there. And yeah, no one can beat him.
- 50:05Speaker 2: He's the fastest.
- 50:05Speaker 5: He's the slowest man on the road and he's run
- 50:08Speaker 5: dak car a few times too. Mallemoto, yeah, yeah, and
- 50:12Speaker 5: his goal was to just like crush Mallemoto all the
- 50:15Speaker 5: time and then become a water boy for one of
- 50:17Speaker 5: the teams. Yeah, and he's extremely talented and like a
- 50:23Speaker 5: very interesting person. I mean he's the only person you
- 50:26Speaker 5: should ever interviews interesting.
- 50:27Speaker 4: He is also the slowest person on the road, Like
- 50:30Speaker 4: he drives a last time we saw me at a
- 50:32Speaker 4: big Man and he's you know, ten ten miles below
- 50:34Speaker 4: the speed limit at any given time, and he's like,
- 50:36Speaker 4: I don't want tickets, you know. Then you get him
- 50:38Speaker 4: in a go kart track on a dirt bike and
- 50:40Speaker 4: he's like nuts like any other opportunity.
- 50:43Speaker 3: I mean, he's the fastest guy in.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Most of the Wow, that's very cool. Run is a
- 50:47Speaker 2: good run, is a good tab.
- 50:49Speaker 3: There's plenty of places.
- 50:51Speaker 4: That's the problem is it's a big world.
- 50:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:54Speaker 5: When we were talking earlier about like what did you
- 50:56Speaker 5: learn about your travels? You know now is a consistent
- 50:59Speaker 5: travelers that one. There are too many wonderful places, So
- 51:02Speaker 5: you just got to like figure out what it is
- 51:04Speaker 5: you need and find the place that suits that, because
- 51:07Speaker 5: every place is fantastic.
- 51:08Speaker 4: Yeah, but we've also learned that toilets are amazing, incredible invention.
- 51:13Speaker 4: When you spend you spend a bunch of time in
- 51:15Speaker 4: a country that doesn't have them.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Squad toilets or just has squad toilets, has an amazing
- 51:20Speaker 2: You know.
- 51:20Speaker 5: I thought squad toilets were the worst until I went
- 51:24Speaker 5: to Northern China and Mongolia, and then apparently cement hole
- 51:28Speaker 5: in the ground is worse. Yeah in there, Yeah, I know,
- 51:31Speaker 5: I'd just rather go outid.
- 51:32Speaker 4: I really appreciate a flushing toilet something.
- 51:37Speaker 2: You know.
- 51:38Speaker 4: It's hard to end on.
- 51:39Speaker 1: That bomb show. Well, what do you guys have coming
- 51:42Speaker 1: up next? Now that things are starting to open up?
- 51:44Speaker 1: What are your big plans for the next year or so?
- 51:47Speaker 1: Are you doing that the new build? Yeah, bike, we.
- 51:50Speaker 4: Got a Royal Endfield I int six fifty. We're gonna
- 51:52Speaker 4: buld a scrambler at that same fun.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that one's coming along.
- 51:56Speaker 1: It was probably the bike that we had because they
- 51:58Speaker 1: were going to take it down to Phoenix to give
- 51:59Speaker 1: it somebody.
- 52:00Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it might be.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, yeah, I mean it's only is it every
- 52:04Speaker 1: once in a while not start. It's like every once
- 52:08Speaker 1: in a while the starter button doesn't work.
- 52:09Speaker 5: It and sometimes the gas gauge is like you're full
- 52:14Speaker 5: and then it's like maybe not.
- 52:16Speaker 2: I mean, hey, for the price tag, it's such a
- 52:19Speaker 2: great it's such a great bike.
- 52:21Speaker 4: Yeah, we have the Sonora Rally in May that they
- 52:24Speaker 4: moved the dates. It would have been in April and
- 52:25Speaker 4: outs in May. It would have been March, sorry, and
- 52:28Speaker 4: they moved that to May.
- 52:29Speaker 3: We're going to Baja in a week.
- 52:31Speaker 5: We'll be there for until we don't feel like being there,
- 52:35Speaker 5: and then we're like trying to develop some top secret
- 52:38Speaker 5: routes which probably everyone knows about. With our friend who
- 52:40Speaker 5: has tour company out there and trying to do some
- 52:42Speaker 5: ADB stuff, nice, do some whatever. He's going to walk
- 52:45Speaker 5: across Baja, so he asked if we wanted to do that.
- 52:48Speaker 4: So we'll see since May, and then end of June
- 52:52Speaker 4: we go to Russia for the so there there. What
- 52:56Speaker 4: I do know is that they're starting in southern Russia,
- 52:59Speaker 4: actually well south east southwestern Russia this year.
- 53:01Speaker 2: Last year, which side of the Urals are they going
- 53:03Speaker 2: to start?
- 53:04Speaker 4: I can't remember the name of the town. Last year,
- 53:06Speaker 4: we were in Iracusk, southern Siberia, and we went from
- 53:09Speaker 4: Iracusk just straight down like we went around like by call,
- 53:11Speaker 4: and then we came down when by calls great, that's amazing, fantastic.
- 53:16Speaker 5: It Actually Silkway does a really good job about like
- 53:18Speaker 5: showing their media the culture and good time. Because we
- 53:22Speaker 5: got all a big taste of that. I guess after that,
- 53:25Speaker 5: we're still not like one confirmed. But there's an event
- 53:29Speaker 5: called Mongolia Monkey Run. It's one of many things that
- 53:32Speaker 5: are put on by the Adventurous.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah, and so that's a pretty fun group.
- 53:37Speaker 3: Yeah, super fun.
- 53:38Speaker 4: Yeah, they want us to come and ride these fifty
- 53:39Speaker 4: cc monkeys.
- 53:41Speaker 2: I saw it, I saw the advertisement. That is that
- 53:43Speaker 2: is the last thing that I would like to do.
- 53:46Speaker 4: I would kill to see you on monkey Like I.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Don't know if my arms would go down far enough
- 53:51Speaker 2: to like even touch the handle.
- 53:53Speaker 5: You would just walk with it like just throttle and
- 53:56Speaker 5: then it moves and you moved.
- 53:57Speaker 2: The problem is that my spine would be this spencer.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Yeah that's the deal. Yeah.
- 54:02Speaker 5: Well, and then when it floods in Mongolia, pretty much
- 54:05Speaker 5: your bike disappears.
- 54:06Speaker 2: Can I just put it on a small backpack?
- 54:09Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 54:09Speaker 2: I mean I know some people did one of their
- 54:12Speaker 2: monkey bike adventures and it was in Morocco and they
- 54:15Speaker 2: said it was lovely.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Yes, I want to go.
- 54:18Speaker 2: I would not think it was lovely.
- 54:20Speaker 3: Yeah, no, maybe not you.
- 54:21Speaker 1: You know, I think it's it's the fact that they
- 54:23Speaker 1: do something so ridiculous that it gives you permission to
- 54:26Speaker 1: do something so ridiculous.
- 54:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, and that that part of it. I
- 54:30Speaker 2: understand part of it. I like, I just want to
- 54:32Speaker 2: do the ridiculous thing on a bigger bike. Yeah.
- 54:39Speaker 3: I think it was like, I don't know if it
- 54:41Speaker 3: was Hong Kong or part of China, they had like
- 54:42Speaker 3: a race on rickshaws.
- 54:44Speaker 5: I was like, that sounds dope, except sucks for the
- 54:46Speaker 5: guy who's pulling you in a rickshaw.
- 54:49Speaker 2: The rickshaw run they did. Yeah, it was in India.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's right.
- 54:52Speaker 2: See I would do that, yeah, because at least then
- 54:55Speaker 2: I'm sitting down again spine and.
- 54:57Speaker 3: Someone else is doing all the running part.
- 54:59Speaker 2: Well they have little motors. Oh yeah, it's.
- 55:02Speaker 3: It's kind of like the yeah, the track, the.
- 55:04Speaker 2: Kind of bolt.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Yeah, like a cabin on the back of a one
- 55:07Speaker 1: to twenty five motorcycle.
- 55:09Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly, old traditional carried by Oh yeah that would
- 55:12Speaker 5: be cool powered, that would be cool for about a
- 55:15Speaker 5: hundred meets.
- 55:16Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, no one would enjoy No, I think the
- 55:20Speaker 4: monkey thing is in August and then we.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Mongolia is great. It's it's that that Northern Route
- 55:26Speaker 1: was one of the most memorable special routes that I've
- 55:30Speaker 1: ever done, coming in from Russia in the northwestern part
- 55:33Speaker 1: of Mongolia and then running across the whole northern Northern Steeps.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's unbelievable, amazing.
- 55:39Speaker 5: I mean like talking about going from Saudi Arabia where
- 55:42Speaker 5: things seem really untouched. They're also a nomadic country, so
- 55:46Speaker 5: it's like if you go to Mongolia, the landscape you
- 55:48Speaker 5: see is virgin territory. You know, nobody is built on it,
- 55:52Speaker 5: and it looks like what it did thousands and thousands
- 55:55Speaker 5: of years ago.
- 55:56Speaker 1: So and when the when they move with their livestock,
- 56:00Speaker 1: they pick up their gir and within a few months
- 56:03Speaker 1: it's all green grass under the ger Again. They've not
- 56:05Speaker 1: like laid concrete or dug some giant hole. It literally
- 56:09Speaker 1: just goes away. Yeah, like really mautful. Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 56:13Speaker 4: Actually, ten years ago, if you'd have told me that
- 56:14Speaker 4: I've been to Mongolia three times, I never would have Wow.
- 56:17Speaker 4: You know, it's like I never would have thought that
- 56:19Speaker 4: would happen in my life. I didn't, not that I
- 56:21Speaker 4: didn't want to go, I just didn't know. It's you know,
- 56:23Speaker 4: those those sorts of things just when they.
- 56:25Speaker 5: Well, there's so many countries in the world to see, Yeah,
- 56:28Speaker 5: especially when you don't know anyone who's been to some
- 56:30Speaker 5: of these. It's kind of like the conversation earlier, how
- 56:33Speaker 5: do you know what to expect or to want to
- 56:35Speaker 5: go to?
- 56:37Speaker 1: If I was to ask you guys, and maybe you
- 56:39Speaker 1: can both answer in your own way, but for those
- 56:42Speaker 1: that are listening, that are they're hearing your story and
- 56:45Speaker 1: your life genuinely sounds fantastical, not only to me, and
- 56:49Speaker 1: it's because you, guys, have made decisions to live your
- 56:51Speaker 1: life a different way. What kind of advice would you
- 56:54Speaker 1: give to someone who maybe wanted to start from the
- 56:56Speaker 1: place that you did at point A? What kind of
- 56:58Speaker 1: advice would you give them to get started, just to
- 57:01Speaker 1: give them some encouragement whatever that might be.
- 57:04Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm so, I'm a bit of a fatalist.
- 57:07Speaker 4: So I usually you know, like, you're not going to
- 57:09Speaker 4: live as long as you think you are. Yeah, you're
- 57:11Speaker 4: probably gonna live a lot, You're probably gonna die out
- 57:13Speaker 4: sooner than you think. And you should get to it,
- 57:15Speaker 4: because it's just there's too many opportunities for bad things
- 57:18Speaker 4: to happen being stagnant and sitting around and doing nothing.
- 57:22Speaker 4: I just my father's nightmare is to die on the toilet.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, he kind.
- 57:28Speaker 4: Of imparted that on me, and I just you know,
- 57:30Speaker 4: it's like you got to just go go do it,
- 57:32Speaker 4: say yes, try to you know, get after it and
- 57:34Speaker 4: be willing to give up a lot.
- 57:36Speaker 3: Yeah, that was part of it.
- 57:38Speaker 5: Is like if you just if you wait until you
- 57:40Speaker 5: have all the gear and the right things to be
- 57:42Speaker 5: able to go, you'll never go. So just get the
- 57:45Speaker 5: thing you can afford, pick a place, and go for it,
- 57:48Speaker 5: because it's not going to be the last place you go,
- 57:50Speaker 5: especially once you decide to do that. So pick one
- 57:53Speaker 5: place that's approachable, something that you can afford, go to it,
- 57:56Speaker 5: and then build your way up to the next place.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:59Speaker 4: I think having like having your sight set on stuff
- 58:02Speaker 4: really helps motivate. You know, if you just buy the
- 58:04Speaker 4: plane ticket, don't don't worry about the hotel or how
- 58:07Speaker 4: you're going to get there, what you're going to do
- 58:08Speaker 4: when you're there. Just buy a plane ticket, get that moving,
- 58:10Speaker 4: and then.
- 58:12Speaker 3: Marry Rich or just prepare to be poor.
- 58:17Speaker 5: We know, you know, we have a lot of rich
- 58:19Speaker 5: with experiences, but we definitely are money when we're traveling
- 58:23Speaker 5: a lot.
- 58:23Speaker 3: It just we dedicate what money does into.
- 58:26Speaker 5: There and we expect to spend it and we don't
- 58:28Speaker 5: cry if we spend it or overspend because.
- 58:31Speaker 3: It's it's you.
- 58:32Speaker 2: And I think that you guys have done a really
- 58:35Speaker 2: good job. You haven't emphasized the vehicle too much, like
- 58:38Speaker 2: you're not haven't even talked about it. Really yeah, I
- 58:41Speaker 2: mean like you guys are about to travel, and I
- 58:43Speaker 2: think you know, I know, like a while ago, for me,
- 58:46Speaker 2: I just I just went, like, okay, go to Vietnam
- 58:48Speaker 2: and rent a scooter, Like you don't. You don't have
- 58:50Speaker 2: to like save up to buy the gs, to buy
- 58:53Speaker 2: the two thousand dollars jacket, to buy the panniers and
- 58:56Speaker 2: this and this and this. I think what's inspirational to
- 58:59Speaker 2: me about you guys just went and you just did it,
- 59:01Speaker 2: and you you found adventures that you could do at
- 59:04Speaker 2: the time with what you had, with what fit into
- 59:07Speaker 2: your schedule, and you, like you said, you just didn't
- 59:09Speaker 2: say no. And I think some I think overlan travelers, man,
- 59:14Speaker 2: how do you say it like they get a little
- 59:15Speaker 2: bit too tied up with the vehicle sometimes, and maybe that's.
- 59:18Speaker 3: Because it's part of the passion.
- 59:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and it is exciting, yes, yeah, but not everybody,
- 59:23Speaker 2: not everybody. But it's expensive, I guess, is what I'm
- 59:26Speaker 2: trying to get out right. It's expensive to get tied
- 59:28Speaker 2: up with the vehicle. And you know, if you just
- 59:30Speaker 2: think more as a traveler and less as an enthusiast
- 59:33Speaker 2: of particular motorcycle.
- 59:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 59:36Speaker 4: We know a lot of folks who you know, they're
- 59:37Speaker 4: building out vans and four by four And my father
- 59:39Speaker 4: is a great example. You know, he's he's got this
- 59:42Speaker 4: bitch and four wheel drive quickly van on thirty fives.
- 59:45Speaker 4: But he's always he's always wanting to do more to
- 59:47Speaker 4: it instead of just used something. Go like the van's fine,
- 59:50Speaker 4: it's got a bed built into the back, it's got
- 59:52Speaker 4: a fresh motor, like off you go.
- 59:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like inside our van.
- 59:55Speaker 5: It's funny because we you know, for a little while,
- 59:57Speaker 5: we were known for this like fan life sort of
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: thing because before it.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: Was cool and then we came to my mainstream for
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: west By one.
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: Time, and then I wrote I wrote a piece for
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: for expedition portal about the realities of it, like once
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: you quit, once you quit moving, you're just home.
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: Well, and the thing is so ours if you open
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: ours up, it's like it was never visually stimulating for
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: people who like gear and building things up because it's
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: literally just got like it's a cargo van.
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a car van. It looks like potato.
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: I mean, we didn't get foam for the the plywood
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: bed platform thing that we have for like four years.
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: We just slept on deflating mattresses for a while.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: And you guys have been to Paradise because of that,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: and that's the difference is that you guys have made
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: a decision for those experiences to be a priority. It's
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: interesting thinking about what you said justin around life being short.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: I think also one thing that I've recognized is that
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: the world is nowhere near as dangerous as we're programmed
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: to think that it is. I mean, to thousand years ago,
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: the world was extremely dangerous, and we still have that
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: genetic makeup where we're constantly pessimistic about our prospects of
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: surviving to tomorrow. The reality is that the world now
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: is very safe, and you have to work really hard
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: to actually make it unsafe. You got to look for
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: you have to really go looking for the trouble. So
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: if we can just for a moment recalibrate our mind
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: to realize that to your point here, like if it
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: doesn't work out, you just pivot a little bit, you
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: change your plan, Maybe you go someplace else, maybe you
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: come back and work for a while to make some
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: more money. The consequences of starvation really aren't a thing anymore. Yeah,
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: you'll eat, or you'll be able to find medical care.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Something will will work out because the world is a
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: lot safer place now. And that's really interesting that you
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: say that, and it's been certainly on my mind too.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: So we can't thank you too enough for being on
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: the podcast and sharing your experiences.
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: You have any more questions for them? Matt, When are
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: we going to go drink beer? I think you're already
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: You're not already drinking I'm drinking fuzzy water. Drink fizz water.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Although I think the last time I saw you, we
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: were very drunk at Dirty Dicks in Paris, drinking tiki.
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know if this story is appropriate
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: for it, but we went back there and Justin had
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: a wild time.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: Well, I just remember walking in and you like handed
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: me this drink that was on fire. It was on fire.
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: It's like, okay, for those who don't know what we're
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: talking about, dirty dis is like this epic if youre
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: in the wall.
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: Tiki bar and.
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: It's across the street from like a divy, scary Russian
- 1:02:36Speaker 5: dance bar where Justin accidentally almost maybe got drugged and
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: then turned into a Russian prostitute.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: I remember that.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: I remember that I was. I was still inebriated at
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: four pm the following day.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: You have me seeing him to sleep. That is not
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: a thing we do.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: I was.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: It was not good. I had my stepfather rescue me.
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: And then they still were like should stuff for beer?
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: Yeah? Then we grabbed beers on the way.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: And then when was that little cafe that we went
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: to that was owned by your friends?
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: They closed, They closed that place. It was right by
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: Garden Nord, right by.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: The Yeah, exactly. That was perfect. I wish that there was.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: It was a sustainable thing because it was just stop
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: the walking traffic.
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: That's a great place.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: That's a great story. And another segue into paradise found
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: in remote places in Russian bars in downtown Paris.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: Don't just say now, don't do it.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Well, thank you all for listening and we will talk
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: to you next time.
