Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I enjoyed my holiday in Hawaii, but I had some
- 0:03Speaker 1: observations along the way. Oh, observations of how couples interact.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Oh okay, and you know it started on the airplane.
- 0:16Speaker 1: And I know traveling is stressful, but just how people
- 0:21Speaker 1: talk to each other is surprising to me. Why did
- 0:26Speaker 1: you put my bag up there? We're sitting in Roe
- 0:29Speaker 1: C and you put my bag in E. Why don't
- 0:32Speaker 1: you put it in Roe C? Instead of oh, we
- 0:38Speaker 1: should we should move our bags? Oh, why don't we
- 0:41Speaker 1: put our bags here? It always starts with a and
- 0:48Speaker 1: it's usually the woman talking to the man exasperated. Yeah,
- 0:54Speaker 1: that's because we're all whipped or you know, we're at
- 0:58Speaker 1: the pool. You're in Hawaii at the pool, and your
- 1:02Speaker 1: husband came down before you, you know, to save you
- 1:05Speaker 1: a spot. Uh huh. I don't want to be in
- 1:08Speaker 1: the sun. Why did you get us this chair in that?
- 1:12Speaker 1: These are different people, by the way, It's not like
- 1:13Speaker 1: I said the same couple everywhere. Why did you give
- 1:18Speaker 1: me a chair in the sun. I want to be
- 1:19Speaker 1: in the shade. How hard is it to say, oh,
- 1:23Speaker 1: thanks for saving me a spot. I think I'm gonna
- 1:26Speaker 1: look for one in the shade because I don't want
- 1:28Speaker 1: to get too much. Why is your default to be
- 1:31Speaker 1: an ass? And I think people that's just their habit,
- 1:36Speaker 1: that's just how they talk. And you take your you know,
- 1:41Speaker 1: partner for granted and you treat them like crap. Why
- 1:46Speaker 1: is it? Why? Why can't your default be to think
- 1:49Speaker 1: of a nice way to say something rather than guy,
- 1:53Speaker 1: you idiot? Why did you give me a chair in
- 1:55Speaker 1: the sun?
- 1:55Speaker 2: My take from this is your default should be not
- 1:59Speaker 2: to speak so loud that people can hear you. Being
- 2:01Speaker 2: this way, there's no reason to speak up. Don't speak
- 2:05Speaker 2: so loud.
- 2:06Speaker 1: There is no reason to talk to your partner.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you don't have to live with him, especially
- 2:13Speaker 2: what he puts your bag up in the plane.
- 2:16Speaker 1: He came down and got you with seats. He you know,
- 2:20Speaker 1: ordered you Why did you order me fries? You know?
- 2:23Speaker 1: I'm on a dot the first the first for me.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I saw it all over.
- 2:30Speaker 2: The place, and I I think it's interesting though, that
- 2:32Speaker 2: you're you're singling out women here.
- 2:34Speaker 1: That's what I saw. I didn't see. I'm just this
- 2:38Speaker 1: is my experience on the trip is various women being
- 2:42Speaker 1: jerky to their husband or boyfriend or whatever, and it
- 2:49Speaker 1: always starts with that and a little eye roll, like
- 2:53Speaker 1: you you do everything wrong?
- 2:56Speaker 2: And how do the how do the men react to
- 2:58Speaker 2: this whip?
- 3:00Speaker 1: You were making a joke, but they were like, yes, dear,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Why is that? Why is that a relationship? You?
- 3:07Speaker 1: Why be in a relationship if that's.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Here's an article that was in the Wall Street Journal
- 3:11Speaker 2: a couple of days ago. The headline is, is masculinity
- 3:14Speaker 2: in crisis? These TV shows suggest, yes, it is. That's science.
- 3:21Speaker 2: John Hamm's character on Apple TV's Your Friends and Neighbors
- 3:24Speaker 2: puts it, we all have a dream, but I was
- 3:26Speaker 2: starting to suspect that my dreams had been every bit
- 3:28Speaker 2: as full of s as the rest of me. And
- 3:31Speaker 2: Rooster Steve Carell plays Greg Russo, a divorce bestselling author
- 3:34Speaker 2: roped into accepting a writer's residency, and then he's the
- 3:37Speaker 2: butt of all the jokes.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I'm not talking about emasculation.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I'm talking about well, that's what it does.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I'm talking about this is the person you have chosen
- 3:47Speaker 1: to spend your time and possibly life with.
- 3:50Speaker 2: This is the person I have chosen to spend my
- 3:52Speaker 2: life emasculating.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Why don't you want your interaction? You know? These are
- 3:57Speaker 1: people that don't say please and thank you to theirs,
- 4:01Speaker 1: could you please hand me a drink?
- 4:02Speaker 2: It's because it's because it's because of I think, in
- 4:07Speaker 2: large part, a dissatisfied the person who's doing that, The
- 4:10Speaker 2: woman who's doing that is just so dissatisfied with the
- 4:13Speaker 2: state of her own life that that she's going to
- 4:16Speaker 2: take it out on her partner. That would be my
- 4:20Speaker 2: armchair psychology.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Then you should look into that. Yeah, oh definitely, there's
- 4:25Speaker 1: no there's no reason to live like that, is what
- 4:27Speaker 1: I'm saying.
- 4:28Speaker 2: And did you ever did you see any of the
- 4:30Speaker 2: men standing up to it?
- 4:32Speaker 1: No? I just don't understand. I would rather if if
- 4:36Speaker 1: that were how my my dynamic with my relationship with
- 4:41Speaker 1: my purse, I would rather be alone than have that.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Why why put up with that? What? You should be
- 4:48Speaker 1: the most kind to that person, you're the most deferential
- 4:52Speaker 1: to that person. You should go out of your way
- 4:56Speaker 1: to to make their life nicer and better, more comfortable.
- 5:00Speaker 2: But again, you don't you don't know, you don't know
- 5:04Speaker 2: whether they deserve it or not.
- 5:07Speaker 1: That's my point. If if he's that horrible, why are
- 5:10Speaker 1: you with him? Why be in a relationship with somebody
- 5:13Speaker 1: that you feel like you have to talk multiply.
- 5:15Speaker 2: A multitude of reasons. There are a multitude of reasons
- 5:19Speaker 2: I can't. I have I have no support of my own.
- 5:22Speaker 2: We have children to consider.
- 5:25Speaker 1: The okay then all, but then you can make it
- 5:28Speaker 1: better by.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Or simply I'm not feeling well.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I don't care how crappy I felt. I would never
- 5:37Speaker 1: talk to my husband that way. I just wouldn't. He's
- 5:41Speaker 1: my person, he's the he's the he's the thing that
- 5:44Speaker 1: makes me happy. Why would I be crappy to him? Ever?
- 5:50Speaker 1: It just made me idea, Well, you're you are.
- 5:52Speaker 2: You are lucky that you have someone that continues to
- 5:57Speaker 2: make you happy, because a lot of people don't have someone.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Then why why?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Because there are there are multiple reasons, I mean, there
- 6:06Speaker 2: are any number of reasons. Why why you stick together.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm just saying, maybe take a second before you respond,
- 6:14Speaker 1: because I bet a lot of it is just habit.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And you go up to the hotel room after the pool,
- 6:21Speaker 2: and and if you listen in on the conversation and
- 6:23Speaker 2: maybe she says I'm instead of it's I'm really sorry.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I hope so I really hope that happens.
- 6:35Speaker 2: It happens all the time.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I really hope that happened people.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Most people don't have perfect relationships as you do.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I'm not saying mine's perfect. I'm just saying if you
- 6:46Speaker 1: just take a second before you respond and think, what
- 6:49Speaker 1: is it? What is a nicer way? I can say
- 6:51Speaker 1: this because don't we all need to be nicer to
- 6:54Speaker 1: each other, more gentler with each other? Is more gentle?
- 6:58Speaker 2: Well more gentler? Why about society wouldn't suggest that? No,
- 7:04Speaker 2: that we don't. I mean, just the way things are going,
- 7:07Speaker 2: so that all the more reason.
- 7:09Speaker 1: To try anyway.
- 7:13Speaker 2: That was just my What is that sound to me?
- 7:18Speaker 2: That's the sound of somebody who's got something stuck in
- 7:20Speaker 2: the back of their own I need a name for
- 7:22Speaker 2: that sound.
- 7:23Speaker 1: And treat treat people, not to be jesus y, but
- 7:29Speaker 1: treat people the way you want to be treated. Do
- 7:31Speaker 1: you want to be talked to that way? Or if
- 7:33Speaker 1: you went down and saved a seat and your person
- 7:37Speaker 1: came down and didn't like the seat, do you want
- 7:39Speaker 1: them going? Or would you rather than say thanks for
- 7:43Speaker 1: getting me a seat, I think I'm gonna look for
- 7:45Speaker 1: one in the shade. How do you want to be
- 7:47Speaker 1: talked to me?
- 7:47Speaker 2: And then talk to people the way you want to be.
- 7:49Speaker 2: And then and then the husband thinks to himself, great,
- 7:52Speaker 2: I failed again.
- 7:56Speaker 1: It's not I failed again. It's like if you start
- 7:58Speaker 1: with thank you for saving me, you see, I appreciate
- 8:01Speaker 1: you coming down and getting that for me. I think
- 8:03Speaker 1: I am going to move over here into the shade, though.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It's the same outcome. Thank you for putting my bag
- 8:12Speaker 1: up there. It would be easier when we leave the
- 8:14Speaker 1: plane if you put it over on this side, so
- 8:16Speaker 1: maybe we can move it.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I know I always do things wrong, don't I really,
- 8:21Speaker 2: that's what you're saying. I never make the right choice,
- 8:26Speaker 2: is what you're telling you.
- 8:28Speaker 1: It's just just an observation.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I should have realized that you wanted a seat in
- 8:34Speaker 2: it in the shade. I I've screwed it up again.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I'm really sorry.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Nothing to be sorry. It was nice of you to
- 8:42Speaker 1: save me a seat.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Well, yeah, whatever you say, dear.
- 8:51Speaker 1: That's my sign off today, by the way.
- 8:52Speaker 2: And then and that's when he pushes her off the boat.
- 8:56Speaker 1: That's a story.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I need a name for that noise. I need a
- 9:00Speaker 2: name for that noise. I mean, it's the sound of disgust.
- 9:04Speaker 1: But what no, no, what.
- 9:11Speaker 2: No, I'm afraid. Yes, yes, that's it, uh, Sue says.
- 9:22Speaker 2: What I'm getting from this is.
- 9:25Speaker 1: What what the iff is this lady doing?
- 9:27Speaker 2: Going on vacation and still dieting no fries. You're on vacation.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I have some pride, all right,
