- 0:00What's going on, everybody? This is your GM,
- 0:01Kale, your bad girl, Dom, is here to bring you
- 0:03episode two of the Stack and Shed series. Now,
- 0:06in this series, we're going to do a deep dive
- 0:08on a few different areas for every single team.
- 0:11And those areas are, what went wrong? What do
- 0:14they need? Stack or Shed? Their draft picks?
- 0:17One move I would do if I was their GM. and their
- 0:21cap space okay now originally i was going to
- 0:23just group everybody in but i was like you know
- 0:25what that's going to take way too much time and
- 0:27i may allocate too much time for this team instead
- 0:30of that team so what we're going to do is we're
- 0:32going to break everything up moving forward okay
- 0:35so let's start with the lions so what went wrong
- 0:38in their season now eventually say it was predictable
- 0:40play calling on key downs and hiring the wrong
- 0:43oc so let's start with predictable play calling
- 0:46I understand that Dan Campbell's identity is
- 0:48aggressiveness. And I understand that it works
- 0:50sometimes and fails. But the problem that we're
- 0:54seeing recently is it's starting to fail the
- 0:56Lions more than actually succeed. And the reason
- 0:59why I'm bringing this up is as long as Dan Campbell
- 1:02continues to be aggressive on key downs, the
- 1:05Lions are going to lose those key down matchups
- 1:08and possibly lose key games that they need to
- 1:11win. Let's be honest here. The Lions are in their
- 1:14window. And the only way that you can maximize
- 1:16your window is playing smart. There's a time
- 1:19and place to be aggressive. The only time I should
- 1:22see your coach being really aggressive is in
- 1:25the third and fourth quarter. Outside of that,
- 1:27there's no need for you to be aggressive. If
- 1:29it's fourth down, but you're in field goal range,
- 1:31kick the field goal, get the three points, who
- 1:33cares? But if it's third and eight, well then
- 1:35guess what? You may have to do something a little
- 1:38bit different. But what you don't do is just
- 1:41be super aggressive all the time because defenses
- 1:44are going to pick it up and then they're going
- 1:46to have a counter for it. And we see it all the
- 1:48time. It was cool when it was the first two or
- 1:51three years of Dan Campbell's tenure with the
- 1:53Lions, but everybody knows what to do against
- 1:56Dan Campbell. I don't care if you have Amon Ross
- 1:58St. Brown. I don't care if you had Randy Moss.
- 2:01I don't care if you had T .O. It's not going
- 2:03to solve anything. You don't believe me? I got
- 2:05some stats to back it up. According to Sumer
- 2:08Sports. The third down conversion rate without
- 2:11Ben Johnson is 213 attempts for 87 conversions,
- 2:15which is 40 .8%. Their fourth down conversions
- 2:19without Ben Johnson is 117 attempts for 20 conversions,
- 2:24which is 17 .1%. I'm not saying these things
- 2:27just to say these things. I know what I'm talking
- 2:29about. The Lions have to do a better job on key
- 2:33downs. If you do that, I guarantee you you'll
- 2:36have a better result than what you have right
- 2:37now. Now on to the offensive coordinator spot.
- 2:40I understand that at some point Ben Johnson was
- 2:43going to lead the Lions and he was going to take
- 2:45a lot of people with him. Now you would have
- 2:46thought the Lions would have been proactive instead
- 2:48of reactive. But clearly that's not what happened
- 2:52and now they're in the situation that they're
- 2:54in where they're currently looking for an offensive
- 2:55coordinator. Now I don't hate them for making
- 2:58the move that they did, but... I just feel like
- 3:01they didn't do enough. And the reason why I say
- 3:03that is because name me one offensive coordinator
- 3:06that wouldn't want to work with this offense.
- 3:08An offense that has Panay Sewell, Jameer Gibbs,
- 3:12David Montgomery, Sam Laporta, Jamison Williams,
- 3:15Amon Ross St. Brown, Isaac Tisla. Now I'll give
- 3:18you some slack because I know sometimes if you
- 3:20make an external hire, they have to bring in
- 3:23their own staff and they may use the players
- 3:25that you have in a different way. Okay, fine.
- 3:28But you mean to tell me you couldn't have at
- 3:29least done a little bit of homework on some potential
- 3:31candidates? If you brought in two or maybe three
- 3:34people just to poke their brains just to see
- 3:36how they would use this person and that person,
- 3:38okay, fine. That shows me that you're open to
- 3:41new ideas. But what you don't do is make an internal
- 3:44promotion and think, okay, we solved the problem.
- 3:46No, you didn't. All you did was just put a band
- 3:49-aid over the situation and say, you know what?
- 3:51We're going to deal with that in the future.
- 3:53And see, I wouldn't have a problem with this
- 3:55if the offense didn't have a lot of weapons.
- 3:57But this offense has a lot of firepower on it.
- 4:00So you need to bring in somebody that knows how
- 4:03to maximize multiple positions to the fullest
- 4:06of their extent. And we saw that there were points
- 4:08in the season where the offense wasn't playing
- 4:10their best. There was a point in time where Dan
- 4:13Cable took the play calling from John Morton.
- 4:15Anytime that happens, your play calling was trash.
- 4:19Now with that being said, what do the Lions need?
- 4:22And that is a new offensive coordinator and a
- 4:24right tackle. Now with the offensive coordinator
- 4:26spot, that's a little bit tricky. I know they
- 4:28brought in a couple people. Mike McDaniel, they're
- 4:31supposed to be bringing in Arthur Smith fairly
- 4:33soon. I think they also brought in Cliff Kingsbury
- 4:36as well. Now out of the people that they're probably
- 4:38going to bring in, I would say Mike McDaniel
- 4:40is the best choice. And the reason why I say
- 4:42that is because... Although the Dolphins had
- 4:45a bad year, I think honestly he's a better offensive
- 4:48coordinator than head coach. His run schemes,
- 4:51phenomenal. And with you having Jameer Gibbs
- 4:53and possibly David Montgomery, I think this is
- 4:56great for you. Although the personality stuff
- 4:58might be a little bit weird because like he's
- 5:00a little bit quirky and nerdy and Dan Campbell
- 5:02is like alpha male. We're going to run through
- 5:04this wall. We're going to enforce our will on
- 5:06everybody. Like it's going to be a weird combination,
- 5:10but when they get on the field, they're going
- 5:12to be great. Okay, now when it comes to the right
- 5:13tackle spot, hear me out because this goes in
- 5:16with the one move that I would do if I was the
- 5:19Lions GM and that is draft the right tackle.
- 5:22Let's be honest here. Parts of their offensive
- 5:25line are getting old. And we know that both Dan
- 5:28Skipper and Taylor Decker have said that this
- 5:30might be their last year. So with that being
- 5:33said, the best thing for you to do is to move
- 5:35Panay Sewell at left tackle, then draft you a
- 5:38right tackle. Now, originally I was thinking
- 5:40the Lions should go after a pass rusher, but
- 5:43once Taylor Decker has said that he's most likely
- 5:45going to retire, I was like, you know what? Right
- 5:47tackle. They need to get a right tackle right
- 5:49now, get this over with, and you don't have to
- 5:51worry about it for the next few years. Now they
- 5:54could go on a free agency and spend a boatload
- 5:56of money on Braden Smith, but I don't think that's
- 5:58the best idea. I think it's just best that you
- 6:00draft one. But when we talk about pass rusher
- 6:02for just a brief moment, I think you can get
- 6:05a really good pass rusher in the second or third
- 6:07round because there's going to be a lot of pass
- 6:09rushers and not all of them are going to be drafted
- 6:12in the first round. So if you get a high quality
- 6:14one in the second round, who's really complaining?
- 6:16Or you could trade for one. Or you could pay
- 6:19Al -Quddeen Muhammad. Because technically speaking,
- 6:22according to Spoltrak, his market value is only
- 6:24$8 .2 million, which translates to a two -year
- 6:27$16 .4 million deal. That's not bad. So I think
- 6:32you have a lot of options with pass rusher compared
- 6:34to right tackle. Right tackle is something that
- 6:37you're going to have to draft high. Now, with
- 6:39that being said, the question that we all need
- 6:41to ask ourselves is stack or shed? And I would
- 6:45venture to say stack. And the reason why I say
- 6:47that is because... The infrastructure is there.
- 6:51All they have to do is just move some pieces
- 6:53around. Once they move those pieces around, they're
- 6:56going to be right back to playing productive
- 6:58football. Yes, it was expected for them to have
- 7:01a down year once Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn
- 7:03left, but they have a chance to get back on straight
- 7:06street. Now, I'll be honest, your division is
- 7:08going to be a lot more competitive now. The Bears
- 7:10look like serious contenders. The Packers are
- 7:13no slouches. If Michael Parsons didn't get hurt
- 7:16this year, they probably would have beaten the
- 7:18Bears and would still be in the playoffs right
- 7:21now. So I understand that there's a lot of frustrations
- 7:24within the Lions fan base, and rightfully so.
- 7:27But you guys have to be patient because let's
- 7:29be honest here. You still have the pieces. All
- 7:33of your top players are in their prime. All you
- 7:35have to do is just address the few holes on your
- 7:38team. Once you do that, you're going to be fine.
- 7:41And as long as everybody stays healthy, which...
- 7:44I have a theory about why their secondary can't
- 7:47stay healthy, but I can't prove it, so I'm not
- 7:49going to talk about it in this episode. But if
- 7:51there's more information that comes out about
- 7:53it, I definitely will. But all you have to do
- 7:55is just maintain the course. If you maintain
- 7:58the course, everything is going to be fine. As
- 8:01long as you don't do anything stupid in the draft
- 8:03or in free agency, everything is going to be
- 8:06fine. Now, with that being said, you're going
- 8:08to have seven draft picks. You're going to have
- 8:10your first, your second. You're not going to
- 8:12have a third. You're going to have your fourth.
- 8:14You're going to have your fifth. You're going
- 8:15to have two sixth round picks and a seventh round
- 8:18pick. That's not bad at all. Honestly speaking,
- 8:21you can use some of those picks to move up in
- 8:23the draft or down in the draft depending on how
- 8:26the board falls. Who's really complaining? Not
- 8:29to mention, you're going to have $71 .6 million
- 8:32in cap space, which technically speaking, you
- 8:35could create more if you move some money around.
- 8:38So you're in a really good spot. All you have
- 8:41to do is just have an honest conversation this
- 8:44offseason and really ask yourself, what do we
- 8:47need to get over the hump? How can we get over
- 8:50the hump? And what decisions can we do to get
- 8:52over the hump? Now, some people will say those
- 8:55are easy questions to answer, but in actuality,
- 8:57it isn't. Because honestly speaking, you're going
- 9:00to need to have some uncomfortable conversations.
- 9:02And some people may not like them, but they need
- 9:05to be had. Because guess what? The same conversations
- 9:08that you're having, the Ravens need to have,
- 9:11the Bills need to have, the Eagles need to have,
- 9:14everybody else that are Super Bowl contenders,
- 9:16they have to have those same conversations. Now,
- 9:19I know this might sound weird, but if I was the
- 9:21GM for the Lions, I would have a theme board.
- 9:23And every single offseason, we would choose a
- 9:26word to describe it. So for this offseason, it
- 9:29would be uncomfortable. Because we need to have
- 9:32uncomfortable conversations about the entire
- 9:34landscape of the roster. I don't care who's your
- 9:38favorites. I don't care who you're close with.
- 9:40It doesn't matter. Because at the end of the
- 9:42day, we are all here for one thing and one thing
- 9:45only. And what is that? To win a championship.
- 9:48And the only way that you can do that is if you
- 9:50have uncomfortable conversations. Conversations
- 9:54that are going to have you think twice, maybe
- 9:55three times about every decision that you make.
- 9:58So instead of you saying, oh we need to go after
- 10:01this big free agent pass rusher, you need to
- 10:03think twice about it. You need to ask yourself,
- 10:06is this pass rusher going to get us closer to
- 10:08winning a Super Bowl? If we draft this prospect,
- 10:11is he going to get us closer to the Super Bowl?
- 10:14If we hire this person to our staff, will they
- 10:17be able to unlock something in either the offense
- 10:19or the defense that can get us closer to winning
- 10:22a championship? Those are the things that need
- 10:24to be asked every single day by everyone. And
- 10:27until that happens, they will not be able to
- 10:30get over the hump. They will not be able to win
- 10:32a championship. But I'm going to end this episode
