Latest / ACC Football Addiction (Atlantic Coast Conference) / Virginia Tech Does It Again - IMPRESSED With Hokies & James Franklin?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's flip to the ACC.
- 0:02Speaker 2: We've been running for about an hour and 10 here,
- 0:04Speaker 2: so we'll go quickly through the ACC and the Big 12.
- 0:07Speaker 2: This is the Power 2. We've mostly focused on the
- 0:09Speaker 2: SEC and the Big 10, but, you know, let's give
- 0:11Speaker 2: a little love to the ACC. Bit of a head-scratcher
- 0:14Speaker 2: between the Virginia Tech Hokies and Boston College. Our coverage
- 0:17Speaker 2: of this presented by PrizePix. James Franklin and Virginia Tech
- 0:21Speaker 2: escape Chestnut Hill by a score of 21-14. This one
- 0:27Speaker 2: was a Boston College lead of 14-6 with about 11
- 0:31Speaker 2: minutes to play in the fourth quarter. This was– I
- 0:36Speaker 2: don't know what to make of this game. I'll give
- 0:38Speaker 2: credit to Virginia Tech that they found.
- 0:40Speaker 1: A way to– Can you tell me when the first
- 0:41Speaker 1: point was scored?
- 0:43Speaker 2: The first point was scored.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Let's see.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Virginia Tech– Don't look.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Don't look. Just tell me if you can guess.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Well, I'm looking now. I'll just tell you. 16 seconds
- 0:56Speaker 2: left of the second quarter. Field goal.
- 0:59Speaker 1: 16 seconds left of the second quarter, 3-0.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Before that, it was, I believe, 11 consecutive punts?
- 1:05Speaker 1: No, no, no. A turnover on downs. Punt, punt, punt, punt.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Turnover on downs.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Punt, punt, punt, punt, punt.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Finally, field goal. 10 punts before we saw points.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I'll give credit to Virginia Tech. You find a way
- 1:17Speaker 2: to win in the fourth quarter with limited time remaining.
- 1:20Speaker 2: You have a 10-play drive for 80 yards. You go
- 1:22Speaker 2: and get a touchdown. You tie it up at 14 apiece.
- 1:25Speaker 2: and then you get an explosive to the point that
- 1:27Speaker 2: you win the game by a score of 21-14 and
- 1:31Speaker 2: you escape Bill O'Brien at Boston College. To me, this
- 1:35Speaker 2: is a Virginia Tech team that has ability and somebody
- 1:39Speaker 2: that we talked about during the offseason could be a
- 1:42Speaker 2: dark horse to show up in Charlotte and be that
- 1:44Speaker 2: second team next to Miami competing for the ACC championship.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I don't have more faith in them all of a sudden,
- 1:51Speaker 2: but considering what's happened already to SMU, what happened this
- 1:55Speaker 2: past weekend to Louisville. The way Wake has been performing,
- 1:58Speaker 2: I think you have to acknowledge. The way Duke has
- 2:00Speaker 2: been performing, I think you have to acknowledge. Clemson going
- 2:02Speaker 2: out to Cal, and Cal kind of underperforming. The coaching
- 2:07Speaker 2: staff is new, but you still have questions there, and
- 2:10Speaker 2: it's just not necessarily coming together the way that they
- 2:12Speaker 2: thought in Berkeley.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Just a real quick break from the video to tell you,
- 2:16Speaker 4: go check out the PrizePix app. We tell you about
- 2:18Speaker 4: them all the time, but all new users over there
- 2:20Speaker 4: who play $ 5 get $ 150 in lineups instantly if they win.
- 2:24Speaker 4: using code HMA on their first lineup. It's not just lineups, though.
- 2:29Speaker 4: It's team picks as well. You've got the Heisman odds
- 2:32Speaker 4: right here. Those continue to update. Trinidad, number one. You've
- 2:35Speaker 4: got Darian Mensah up there at number two. Camario Taylor,
- 2:39Speaker 4: shout out Mississippi State, number three. You've got Jeremiah Smith,
- 2:42Speaker 4: CJ Carr, Jaden Baugh, all the way up to number six.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Arch Manning, Gunnar Stockton, Julian Sayen, Malachi Toney, Will Hammond,
- 2:48Speaker 4: a ton of names here. You can go play team
- 2:51Speaker 4: picks as well. You can take first team to score.
- 2:53Speaker 4: You can take a bunch of different, different picks on
- 2:56Speaker 4: the prize picks app. Go check them out. We appreciate
- 2:59Speaker 4: them for their support. Now back to the clip on
- 3:01Speaker 4: the power to.
- 3:03Speaker 2: The ACC just feels like it's wide open right now.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And I think that's the greater conversation when it comes.
- 3:07Speaker 1: To the number two.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:09Speaker 2: What do you think about Virginia tech at this point
- 3:11Speaker 2: in time? Cause this didn't make me feel like, Oh man,
- 3:13Speaker 2: Virginia tech. I'm, I'm not more scared of like Virginia
- 3:16Speaker 2: Tech's chances the remainder of the way, nor am I
- 3:18Speaker 2: saying like, oh man, they showed such grit and resolve.
- 3:21Speaker 2: They're going to wind up as the number two.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but they found a way to win in sloppy conditions.
- 3:25Speaker 3: And while again, is this the game that we'll be
- 3:27Speaker 3: looking back and saying Ethan Grunkemeier is a reason to believe.
- 3:30Speaker 1: In the Hokies? Probably not.
- 3:32Speaker 3: But Ethan Greckemeyer has shown you at this point in
- 3:34Speaker 3: the season with over 1,000 passing yards and an 8-0
- 3:38Speaker 3: touchdown to interception ratio, he's a good fit. And he's
- 3:41Speaker 3: done a lot of good for this offense to build
- 3:43Speaker 3: upon for the future. The fact they said, hey, Jeffrey Overton,
- 3:45Speaker 3: we're going to hand it to you 25 times and
- 3:47Speaker 3: you're going to average 8.4 yards of play and you're
- 3:50Speaker 3: going to find the end zone once, but you're going to.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Get 200-plus rushing yards. Are you cool with that? Yeah,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I'm fine. I think that's fair.
- 3:57Speaker 3: The fact that Luke Reynolds came on in after being
- 4:00Speaker 3: in a situation that was not working at Penn State,
- 4:03Speaker 3: but reuniting with his former coach and now going up
- 4:05Speaker 3: against ACC competition. He's living up to the bar and
- 4:08Speaker 3: the billing of what he was supposed to be in
- 4:10Speaker 3: State College.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's promising.
- 4:13Speaker 3: There's a lot of good, I think, with Virginia Tech,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and now they have an opportunity going into Friday night
- 4:18Speaker 3: against Pitt to keep the undefeated streak alive and kind
- 4:21Speaker 3: of separate themselves as that next team in the ACC.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And sometimes, again, like.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Every other conference, the level of competition that you face
- 4:29Speaker 3: off against, it won't always be pretty. It just matters
- 4:32Speaker 3: if you win. That's Virginia Tech right now after this game.
- 4:35Speaker 3: It was a disgusting slot fest of a lot of
- 4:38Speaker 3: punts and a lot of miscommunication and a lot of
- 4:41Speaker 3: just bad execution for literally three and a half quarters.
- 4:44Speaker 1: And then you turn on the Jets.
- 4:47Speaker 3: And you had a couple of explosives and you found
- 4:49Speaker 3: the end zone twice and you got a two-point conversion
- 4:52Speaker 3: and you were able to win by seven.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And you did so in sloppy weather conditions. You made
- 4:56Speaker 1: no excuses.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Now he's got to be able to go back and
- 4:59Speaker 3: play the version of football that we saw against Maryland
- 5:01Speaker 3: for us to believe that you are actually going to.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Be that next team to talk about in the ACC.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Because you could be. You very well could be. I
- 5:08Speaker 1: think that's a fair statement right now.
- 5:12Speaker 2: The rest of their schedule, the Pitt game this weekend
- 5:14Speaker 2: is definitely going to be one to keep an eye on.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I'm really intrigued by that game. I think it's going
- 5:18Speaker 2: to be very competitive. Cal, I don't know what to
- 5:21Speaker 2: make of them. JKS, I love, but I don't like
- 5:23Speaker 2: what's around him. The Georgia Tech game, I think I
- 5:27Speaker 2: favor Virginia Tech. Clemson is showing signs of life.
- 5:32Speaker 1: It's odd.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I think Dabo is– I wouldn't say he's rallied the troops,
- 5:37Speaker 2: but Clemson looks at least viable, and they're going to
- 5:40Speaker 2: put up a fight in every game that they play.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Like last year, it didn't feel that way, the back
- 5:45Speaker 2: half of the season. The SMU game will be a
- 5:48Speaker 2: challenge at any given point. Stanford, okay. You play Miami.
- 5:53Speaker 2: You're in Miami for that game late November, so health
- 5:56Speaker 2: being something to consider. And then the Bo Perbula revenge game,
- 6:00Speaker 2: Virginia versus Virginia Tech to close out the season. So
- 6:03Speaker 2: I think James Franklin has done a good job organizing
- 6:07Speaker 2: this non-conference schedule very quickly over the offseason to make
- 6:11Speaker 2: had in about three wins there so this is a
- 6:14Speaker 2: team that i think is going to get to bowl
- 6:15Speaker 2: eligibility pretty darn quickly which is great and i think
- 6:18Speaker 2: that's something virginia tech is very excited about i don't
- 6:20Speaker 2: know if i'm prepared to put them into the acc
- 6:24Speaker 2: title game just yet if i had to put money
- 6:27Speaker 2: on it at this point i think i'd lean duke
- 6:30Speaker 2: which way would you lean.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Duke I think it's a good answer. Wake Forest. I
- 6:38Speaker 1: think Wake Forest deserves a little bit.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Of a rush.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I agree with Wake.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I agree with Wake.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I'm not ready to rule out Louisville entirely. Again, they
- 6:45Speaker 3: have no room for error anymore, but they only have
- 6:47Speaker 3: one conference loss right now, and they have a massive
- 6:49Speaker 3: win over SMU. SMU could still be in it. It's
- 6:52Speaker 3: hard to separate. What I will say is that I've
- 6:54Speaker 3: been very pleased with looking at how the defense was
- 6:57Speaker 3: for Virginia Tech so far. I think they played up
- 7:00Speaker 3: to a certain par. I think that you are watching
- 7:02Speaker 3: as Grunkemeyer in a system where it's not playing against
- 7:05Speaker 3: Big time competition, he's gained back his confidence.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I think they have a run game.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I think they have weapons that they know they can
- 7:11Speaker 3: win against the competition that they go up against in
- 7:13Speaker 3: the ACC. And they got a coach that I think
- 7:16Speaker 3: is getting the best version of a football program out
- 7:19Speaker 3: there week in and week out, regardless of circumstances. So
- 7:22Speaker 3: I'm not ready to punt on anything when it comes
- 7:24Speaker 3: to Virginia Tech. Again, you don't apologize for winning. You
- 7:27Speaker 3: don't apologize for playing under really rocky conditions and still
- 7:32Speaker 3: finding a way to come away unscathed.
- 7:35Speaker 1: There's just a lot of clean on up.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I think right now, if you were to tell me
- 7:38Speaker 3: that if Virginia Tech is the best bet for the
- 7:41Speaker 3: ACC to get a second team in the college football playoff,
- 7:44Speaker 3: I would have my reservations. But to be fair, outside
- 7:47Speaker 3: of right now, I would say Miami, I have all
- 7:49Speaker 3: my reservations for any team in the ACC.
- 7:51Speaker 1: That's just kind of where we are.
