- 0:00Hour number two, Miller and Condon welcome back.
- 0:02Iowa Sports Radio Network. Addison Barge and Polk County
- 0:05ICLUB coming up here in Addison. Bouton, I beg your pardon?
- 0:10Coming up here in about 230 minutes or thereabouts.
- 0:13Polk County ICLUB for Addison. Get the details on their event.
- 0:16Coming up two weeks from last night, believe is the date.
- 0:20Let's head to Chicago. David Kaplan joins us.
- 0:23Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors Cappy on a weekly basis.
- 0:27Hello Capper, how are you? I am doing absolutely awesome
- 0:33and I appreciate you guys moving me to today.
- 0:35I had something I had to do yesterday so I greatly
- 0:39appreciate it. It's great to be.
- 0:40With no, not any, anytime. I think so.
- 0:42Right back at you. So a lot of ground to cover.
- 0:44We'll get to the draft. Cubs are about the first pitch
- 0:47coming up in 15 minutes at Wrigley Field as they go for the
- 0:49sweep over the Phillies. They've turned it around.
- 0:52Bush hit finally at a home run. Suzuki likewise, he's up to two
- 0:55as he goes back-to-back nights. I guess maybe other than
- 0:59Swanson, he's got a little power to his numbers, but boys really
- 1:03struggling average wise when it comes to the offense cap, would
- 1:07you say that at least for now the bats are awakened?
- 1:11It certainly looks that way and if you look at during this
- 1:14winning streak that they're on, PCA has been killed, absolutely
- 1:20been outstanding. So you go back through and look
- 1:23at all the different metrics and numbers during the Cup 7 game
- 1:27win streak. Pete Crow Armstrong 28379400
- 1:33slash line 127 weighted runs created plus big average is 117
- 1:39point 2K rate, 6.9 walk rate so and a 379 OBP is super
- 1:46encouraging. Team rounding into form, still
- 1:50figuring out roles in the bullpen.
- 1:52There was some sniffing around of G Alito.
- 1:55At least there were some reports out there that they were
- 1:57sniffing around. We know we found a home in San
- 1:59Diego. What were your thoughts on that
- 2:00and were you somebody that it made sense you thought he was
- 2:04washed? Your thoughts overall on the
- 2:05potential and what happened as he decides to go to San Diego?
- 2:09I kept hearing he was grossly overpricing himself and that's
- 2:15why he was still sitting out there.
- 2:17And at some point he looked and I might be able to go win a
- 2:21World Series in San Diego. I'm a California guy.
- 2:24He grew up in LA. So I think he finally just said,
- 2:29all right, I got to take what's being offered, then go earn
- 2:32another contract. He has a mutual option for Year
- 2:352. There's probably going to be a
- 2:36labor stoppage so he can say, hey, you know what, I'm
- 2:41declining the option and I pitched really well, so pay me
- 2:45now. So we'll see.
- 2:46I thought the Cubs should have kicked the tires, but it sounded
- 2:50like he wanted to stay West, so good luck to him.
- 2:53Good dude, I like him. Cap want to go back to last
- 2:55night. Good to see Matthew Boyd back in
- 2:57the rotation, but I was surprised council took him out
- 3:00when he did. I know that 84 pitches,
- 3:02etcetera, but he was one out away from qualifying for the
- 3:06win. They were up for two at the
- 3:07time. No guarantee they're going to
- 3:08hold that score. Obviously they ended up doing so
- 3:11as they shut the door 72 Ben Brown was accredited with the
- 3:14winners. He came in after Boyd but one
- 3:17out from qualifying into Shay's not even go nuts.
- 3:20But he mentioned here a couple of times this never would have
- 3:22happened. This never would have happened
- 3:24back in the days. This never and he's right.
- 3:26He wouldn't have taken them out. Did council do the right thing
- 3:29or hindsight? Would he have left him at least
- 3:31try for one more batter because he just got induced a ground
- 3:34ball double play to get those two outs in the in the 5th
- 3:38inning? I think that that it's not a big
- 3:44deal. I I really believe that at 84
- 3:47pitches, all Craig cares about is winning that game, whatever
- 3:53it takes, by hook or by crook. So I don't think Matthew Boyd's
- 3:57not that kind of guy. Matthew Boyd, it's not going to
- 4:00be the difference between him getting another contract.
- 4:04A dude's a good dude, a really good leader in the room.
- 4:07I don't think it was a big deal. Yeah.
- 4:08And as they both mentioned, I mean, when you look at pictures
- 4:11numbers now, it used to all be wins and losses, right?
- 4:14That used to be where that used to be all we used to go on for
- 4:17the most part, but now it's changed significantly.
- 4:19So I get it. You're probably right, Kel.
- 4:21The by esteros plan against lefties.
- 4:24He's not getting a chance and it's that tough kind of
- 4:28balancing act, Kathy, that you have to do.
- 4:31You want him to develop. You don't want him to turn into
- 4:33a guy that never can face left handers, but you also don't want
- 4:37to develop in a team that is fighting in a division that has
- 4:39everybody playing well, certainly at this point in time.
- 4:42How do you deal with that balancing act and finding a way
- 4:44to still get him some at bats against lefties while knowing
- 4:48it's a struggle for him but you want to develop him?
- 4:53Look, he has been so good if you look at like, I don't know if
- 4:58you have a computer right there, but take a look at his numbers
- 5:02in terms of his OPS and his OPS plus like his metrics are
- 5:11spectacularly good. It's crazy how good his metrics
- 5:18are. I'm amazed by it.
- 5:19I really AM. And if they're going to put him
- 5:23in good situations so he keeps getting confidence, he's 22
- 5:27years of age. Look today, Christopher Sanchez,
- 5:31I think he's one of the top five pitchers in the game.
- 5:33I do. I think he's a stud.
- 5:36And so you're going to sit him and play the righty.
- 5:39I have 0 issue with that. But if there's a pinch hit
- 5:43opportunity later like that guy voices by a Steros, he was flat
- 5:49out shit. And at some point he will face
- 5:52the tough lefties. But I got no problem with Craig,
- 5:54you know, picking and choosing the spots for him.
- 5:57All right, so let's Fast forward to September and cap.
- 6:00I bought 2 tickets on 2 Cubs by Esteros to win Rookie of the
- 6:04Year. I think I got him at either 30
- 6:06or 40 to one, I'll say 30, but he's a good price.
- 6:09And Nico Horner to win the MVP of the NL at 150 to 1.
- 6:14And I, I know that O'donnee's in the National League.
- 6:17But of those two, when I get to September, what ticket do you
- 6:21think I'll be more excited? Excited about by Esteros Horner
- 6:24or you wasted your money? So I have those same 2 tickets
- 6:30to you and then Yep, since we spoke I have added a parlay
- 6:36ticket that I think you should consider.
- 6:39OK, I have a parlay ticket on Mason Miller to win the Cy
- 6:46Young. Love it.
- 6:47And Nico Horner to be the MVP. That's got to be huge.
- 6:51It's massive. I'll look it up while we're on
- 6:53the phone. It's got to be north of 200 to
- 6:56one week. I'll look it up here while we're
- 7:00talking. Yeah, but I absolutely did that.
- 7:03Wow. Because I.
- 7:03Think it has a legit chance? Yeah, I.
- 7:06Mean what was he was 150 to 1 when I bought him yesterday
- 7:09right or two days ago I think Trent we were talking about it
- 7:12on the air and we went to break and I opened up my app and fired
- 7:15away. You ready to switch to any more
- 7:17baseball TC? Yeah, just the White Sox and
- 7:19what we've seen here in the early going from American Tommy.
- 7:22Wow. Did anybody anticipate this this
- 7:25quickly, this kind of pop? They did not.
- 7:29Anyone that tells you that they were absolutely confident he
- 7:33could do this. No, because that's why he didn't
- 7:37sign with anybody else, you know?
- 7:40Yeah, it's it's amazing how well he's swinging the bat.
- 7:46Now the question is, can he continue this when they make
- 7:50adjustments to him? Like everyone in the game that I
- 7:54spoke to thought that he could not hit high, high end velocity.
- 8:01Guess what? He's turning around high end
- 8:04velocity. Nobody really knew because they
- 8:07didn't have a ton of high end Velo in Japan.
- 8:10And so, so far he's been magnificent.
- 8:13There have to be teams in the game that are kicking themselves
- 8:18and going OK, we need an offense.
- 8:19How did we miss on this guy? He's not making.
- 8:22It's not like you paid him $180 million.
- 8:25You paid him 34 / 2 years. Yeah, 2 year deal though.
- 8:28Unbelievable. Two year deal?
- 8:30Yeah, there are. I was arguing with my producer
- 8:33today. He wants to extend him right
- 8:37now. And I said, Shay, for you to do
- 8:41that, he's going to say to you, OK, I want we'll pull it out of
- 8:44thin air. 5 for 15030 million a year.
- 8:48And he may not even take that, but that's what he'll probably
- 8:51say. He's like done, I'll do that,
- 8:54said Shay. He's not got 100 of bats in the
- 8:56big leagues. I need to see how he handles
- 9:01when guys make adjustments. How does he handle that?
- 9:04You want to come talk to me end of June, beginning of July as we
- 9:08go to the All Star break and you tell me the dudes got 26 home
- 9:11runs already and he they've made adjustments and he's adjusted
- 9:15back. I'm more than willing to talk
- 9:17because what people don't realize is OK, he's got one year
- 9:21left on his deal. If there's a labor stoppage that
- 9:24costs us all of next year, he's a free agent then because next
- 9:29year does not roll into 28 and you go, well, we didn't play, so
- 9:34we have the 28th season. That deal is then null and void.
- 9:39Interesting, I did not know that Cap.
- 9:41I want to pick your brain on one other baseball topic I'm
- 9:43watching flipping around. Last night I I landed on the
- 9:46Twins and the Mets. Was Lewis's Roberts arm as as
- 9:51bad as it was at the end? I mean, he's awful Cap.
- 9:54I thought when he broke into the league he had one of the better
- 9:57arms early in his White Sox tenure.
- 10:01Am I mistaken there? Because he was just He was
- 10:03atrocious last night. They were laughing at him in the
- 10:06Mets booth as how badly his throws were from center field
- 10:09trying to gun down runners at the plate.
- 10:12I mean, it was embarrassingly bad.
- 10:13Was he always that way? He was not.
- 10:16He used to have a pretty solid arm.
- 10:18He was. He's he's an elite defender,
- 10:22elite as a defensive player, very athletic.
- 10:26But something's going on with that dude.
- 10:28Like when the White Sox had to announce that they told him not
- 10:32to hustle down the line unless it's going to be a very close
- 10:35play. I mean, because they wanted to
- 10:38get hurt. That's just idiocy.
- 10:40You know, it's just stupid. So we'll see.
- 10:45He'll never reach the heights that everyone had projected.
- 10:49Yeah, I agree. Tonight we will wait a long
- 10:52time, not as long in the past, but wait till 25, which is great
- 10:55to wait and not because they traded with somebody because
- 10:58they had a successful year. It's been a rarity in this
- 11:00organization with the Bears at 25, edge rusher, maybe offensive
- 11:05line, safety potentially. Where are the tides turning
- 11:10right now? What do you think the Bears are
- 11:11going to do with 25? I think it's best player
- 11:14available. We are arguing about this this
- 11:16morning on the radio and ESPN1000I truly believe it is
- 11:20going to be just who's the best guy on the board, period.
- 11:24Let's go get them because you have 6 positions truly that you
- 11:29have a need at. Would you like to get a
- 11:31replacement receiver for DJ Moore?
- 11:34Yes, but unless there's some freaky thing that happens if
- 11:38somebody's on the board, they're not taking one of the first 3
- 11:42picks. They have two seconds tomorrow,
- 11:44they have a third and then they have the number one pick tonight
- 11:46at 25. I think they're either going
- 11:49rush, edge, D tackle, starting safety in the box, hard hitting
- 11:55strong safety, linebacker to replace like a Tremaine Edmonds
- 11:59type, and they've done some of that free agency that's probably
- 12:03down the list corner to replace Deshawn right or starting left
- 12:07tackle. One of those is what you'll see
- 12:10tonight. How does the draft play in
- 12:11Chicago? Obviously in NFL city,
- 12:14baseball's going on two teams there.
- 12:16Cubs are relevant most years and are again this year.
- 12:19How does the draft play on your show cap?
- 12:22The drafts, huge, absolutely huge.
- 12:26And people, you know, are very opinionated.
- 12:29They have their thoughts about this and I love the passion that
- 12:33they bring to it. I really do.
- 12:35I love how jacked up people get to be able to see the Bears add
- 12:41to a team that they have legitimate hope that they're
- 12:45going to the Super Bowl this year.
- 12:46Are they that one? I can't tell you.
- 12:49But I can tell you, I think they're going to be a really
- 12:52good team again, really good. I think we're going to hear
- 12:54again this summer maybe some comparisons to Washington had
- 12:58that breakthrough year when all the close games, including one
- 13:01against Chicago that we all remember vividly from two years
- 13:04back. Bears had some bowels would go
- 13:06their way, had some tight calls at the end they were able to
- 13:09pull out. How can he get away with that?
- 13:10Or is that just the nature of the NFL?
- 13:12Look, some season those close calls balls are going to go your
- 13:14ways, others that it isn't. Is this something that's been
- 13:17mentioned by Ben Johnson? It's something that they have to
- 13:22improve. On no guard against, yeah.
- 13:25I mean every single year we. See this?
- 13:27OK, Yeah, that he, Ben said. First of all, we're back at
- 13:32Square 1, He said. What we did last year does not
- 13:37matter, period. He said for the first week of
- 13:40the offseason, it was super cool to hear people come up to him
- 13:44and go, oh coach, it was such a great season, blah, blah, blah,
- 13:48blah, blah. He said.
- 13:50Now I don't want to hear it. I really don't want to hear it
- 13:53because it does. It's irrelevant what we did.
- 13:57We're starting over. And the other thing is, and he
- 14:00said, if you think we're going to lead the league and turn over
- 14:03margin again and takeaways this insane number that no one else
- 14:08in the league comes close to, yeah, not going to happen, he
- 14:11said. That's just a fact.
- 14:13And so they have got to get more pressure on the opposing
- 14:17quarterback. And then on top of that, they
- 14:19have got to be able to run the football again.
- 14:23If they run the football successfully, that keeps the
- 14:26other teams offense off the field.
- 14:29We won't hold this. We, we won't bring this up
- 14:32again. Well, Trent won't in in August,
- 14:34but right now, who do you think? I think the team to beat is in
- 14:37the North other than the Bears? Remove them.
- 14:40Of the other three, which team would be the one that maybe not
- 14:43fears you but worries you a little bit as this team's always
- 14:47is going to give the Bears fits. Who is it in the North?
- 14:51And you tell me with certainty how Kyler Murray's going to
- 14:56play. No.
- 14:58No Kyler Murray with paired with Kevin O'Connell is a way better
- 15:04player than what we saw in Arizona.
- 15:07Then I think the Minnesota Vikings are the biggest threat
- 15:11to the Bears. Wow, interesting, I think.
- 15:12Green Bay will be a good football team.
- 15:14I don't think they're great. And let me see what Detroit does
- 15:18tonight because their offensive line is a mess, a mess.
- 15:21But maybe they make a move and get a great tackle tonight.
- 15:25If they do that, then I would think Detroit would be really,
- 15:29really tough again. But I'm not counting on them
- 15:32either. I'm not a huge golf guy.
- 15:34He's OK. Yeah, he's OK.
- 15:35I would think it's Minnesota. I would think it's Minnesota.
- 15:38Yeah, one, one thing on Detroit, though, they got the 4th place
- 15:40schedule and there's a couple of layups in that schedule that
- 15:43certainly should help them. And man, they've been banged up.
- 15:46But yeah, I think that's fair with your O'Connell and Kyler
- 15:48Murray comparison or lumping them together.
- 15:51That's the one that makes me the most nervous and I have somebody
- 15:54at home that likes to chirp about it too.
- 15:57The ladies of the house, they are Vikings fans and me and my
- 16:00little guy, we are Bears fans. So we got a split household and
- 16:03I don't like when the Vikings aren't good cappy basketball.
- 16:06Billy walks away, take us in a little bit.
- 16:10The decision. Is there a possibility of him
- 16:12going back to college at 60 years old?
- 16:15Is there another job for him in the NBA?
- 16:16What can you tell us? But before I answer that
- 16:21question, you asked me to look up on my.
- 16:23Yeah, your ticket? Yeah.
- 16:24Where'd you? Get my fanatics.
- 16:27I bet $100 a $100 ticket pays 170,000.
- 16:34Jesus 170 to 1 not. Too shy?
- 16:37Jesus good for? You yeah, 170 one 600 for $100.
- 16:43Oh, I love those lottery tickets, right?
- 16:45Something I don't know them. That's great.
- 16:47Yeah, I took a shot, man. I think Jason Miller, he stays
- 16:51healthy. Absolutely.
- 16:53Will will win the Cy Young. I do.
- 16:56And Nico, you're telling me if Nico Horner keeps playing like
- 16:59this and the Cubs win the division, you're telling me he's
- 17:02not going to be right there? There may be a buy out in my
- 17:05future. There's probably will be if
- 17:07Otani doesn't get injured, buy out, but if he does then let her
- 17:11ride. Go ahead.
- 17:12I'm sorry. The Bills question?
- 17:14Take a shot. Yeah.
- 17:15Billy Donovan, your thoughts on the departure and is there a
- 17:19home somewhere else for Billy Donovan, MBA or college?
- 17:22What makes more sense? He won't go back to college.
- 17:25He has zero interest. He could have had Carolina 0
- 17:29interest in him going back to college.
- 17:33He has unfinished business in the NBA.
- 17:34He wants to win a title. There was not going to happen
- 17:37here for quite a while. And I've known Billy since 1992.
- 17:43That dude called me in 1992 and said, hey, my name is Billy
- 17:48Donovan. I'm the assistant at Kentucky
- 17:52and a player that we're recruiting and we're about to,
- 17:55it may have already signed him. Do you have any idea where he'd
- 17:58be taking his ACT test? Because we want to make sure
- 18:02he's there. We got to get him eligible.
- 18:04It was Antoine Walker and we became friendly over that and he
- 18:10was coming into my camp to recruit.
- 18:12He's a great, great human. And Billy Donovan stepped down
- 18:17and he told me this. He said, I talked to him this
- 18:20week. He said cap the guy that takes
- 18:23this job and they would have made Billy the president of
- 18:26basketball operations. He doesn't want to do that.
- 18:28He wants to coach. He's a coach.
- 18:31He said. The guy they bring in, whether
- 18:34that's me, Ken, Trent, you should have a clean slate and
- 18:39the right to hire whoever it is you think you want to be the
- 18:43coach. And so that's why he stepped
- 18:46down, because he's selfless. Good stuff.
- 18:49Arlington Heights capital finish here.
- 18:50Looks like you're going to be right.
- 18:53I've been telling you that for a lot, a few years.
- 18:56It's not done yet, and it could fall apart because we have some
- 19:00of the dumbest politicians in America right here in the state
- 19:03of Illinois. That's just a fact.
- 19:06You know, everybody's got their hand out the other night.
- 19:09It sounds like they got the votes.
- 19:10And then the teachers union. Well, we'll hold on a second.
- 19:13We want our part now somebody else.
- 19:15We want to tax on millionaires. Somebody else.
- 19:17We want this for our stop. Just get it done, get the bears
- 19:22here and keep the tax revenue in our state, which is dead ass
- 19:26broke. So I think I'm going to be
- 19:29right, but nothing would surprise me with our
- 19:31politicians. But I do know for a fact the
- 19:34bears want this deal done here. They don't want to go to
- 19:39Indiana. Good stuff capper the day worth
- 19:43day wait was worth it. Excellent contribution as
- 19:46always. We'll talk with you next
- 19:47Wednesday. Have a great weekend and we'll
- 19:50we'll talk soon, bud. Yeah, I'll be at the Cubs at
- 19:52Dodger Saturday. Nice.
- 19:54Cubs at Padres Monday, I fly home.
- 19:57Tuesday we'll talk about. It I can't wait.
- 19:59Lucky you. Good stuff capper.
- 20:01Take care. Safe trip.

- 20:47stone of Iowa. They've got over 200 different
- 20:50color and pattern combinations and as we mentioned, of course
- 20:53they've got natural stone. If Centurion Stone does not meet
- 20:56your need, 5525 NE 22nd St. in Des Moines.
- 21:01Centurion Stone of iowa.com sponsors Cappy each and every
- 21:07week, so best player available you in.
- 21:10As long as I like the player. Kaden Proctor's still there
- 21:13trend. He's the best player available
- 21:14you in. I'll have a take.
- 21:18What? What?
- 21:19What would you set the over under if you were if you were
- 21:21sports, but condom casino you're offering, we're offering props
- 21:24on the draft. Uh huh.
- 21:27What number would you put draft position wise?
- 21:2922 1/2? No, I think it'd be earlier.
- 21:32Yeah, because I saw yesterday. I saw him at 13.
- 21:35And I saw that in one of the markets, I think it was
- 21:38offshore, but it went from 18 1/2 to 17 1/2 yesterday.
- 21:41Really, he's over under, so I'm just going to nap.
- 21:44You get enamoured a guy that's because of the size that moves
- 21:47that way. It's not just the size, it's the
- 21:49athleticism with the size. We've seen it too much and.
- 21:54But can he jump out of a pool like Wurfs?
- 21:57That was his What a display of athleticism.
- 22:00Now Proctor at different times has got about 70 lbs on him,
- 22:03sure. So that's a little bit different
- 22:05too. He is a mountain of a man.
- 22:08He is athletic. I just wonder about the desire
- 22:12and in this league. See, I saw that at Southeast
- 22:15Poke. And you know what?
- 22:16I I tried to convince He's just taking it easy on these guys.
- 22:19He's going to kill him. I.
- 22:20Just want to hurt those boys. I saw a kid, I can't remember
- 22:24which game it was, that was giving up probably 200 lbs to
- 22:27him, 175 at minimum to him, and he worked him.
- 22:32Now of course, the rest of the town of Southeast Poke, it
- 22:34didn't matter, but there were multiple times they were.
- 22:36Good, weren't they? My God.
- 22:38They were loaded. Both sides of the.
- 22:39Ball absolutely so good those SE poke teams.
- 22:42It's the desire, it's the inside thing and that's my biggest
- 22:46thing. Here's the other part.
- 22:47I think Kim Proctor will have probably a couple of good years.
- 22:50There'll be a couple like he looks like a pro bowler.
- 22:54It's longevity. It's.
- 22:56Where do the Eagles draft? I know they're 20s.
- 22:59Boy, that would be then, right? They've taken on some and Kane
- 23:03Proctor is not a problem child, so that's not a fairway.
- 23:05No baggage, some guys with baggage and they have done
- 23:09incredibly well with those guys. That would be a great home for.
- 23:12Him, 2320. 3 veterans to take him under their wing.
- 23:17Lane Johnson, Yeah, Look after him.
- 23:20Look after the rookie. He's the heir apparent to you.
- 23:23Could be, yes. We'll see.
- 23:26We'll find out tonight. The Eagles draft 23, the Bears
- 23:28draft 25. Time for another keyword.
- 23:32You can head to kxno.com or your station's website.
- 23:36Once you're there, a pop up box will appear.
- 23:39The keyword this hour is win. Win at kxno.com.
- 23:44Your chance to win $1000 in this nationwide contest.
- 23:50Win at kxno.com. Addison Bouton is the president
- 23:55of the Polk County I Club. They've got their big event here
- 23:58in central Iowa coming up. What did you say?
- 24:00May the what? May the 6th that's.
- 24:02Wednesday, so two weeks from last night. 13 days away for
- 24:06that. Jan Jensen, Kirk.
- 24:08Ference, Josh Ash going to be there representing the men's
- 24:11basketball program and Addison Bouton will join us with a
- 24:15little more details on that when we come back.
- 24:19It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 24:25I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back.
- 24:27Just past 130 on a Thursday. Trent's plays of the day still
- 24:32to come. How did it go yesterday?
- 24:34Not good, Not good after back-to-back great nights.
- 24:37Yeah, we'll just gloss over this one.
- 24:39Smooth right past that still winning week.
- 24:41Yeah, good. Yeah, we got.
- 24:43You had 9 plays. Yesterday, three and six.
- 24:45Yeah, 3:00 and 6:00. Yeah, that bites you.
- 24:47Well, we'll back up. Stack up right, Waffle Go again.
- 24:52Had the White Sox starter yesterday.
- 24:53Over 2 1/2 strikeouts. He finished with two.
- 24:56Unbelievable. Yeah.
- 24:58It's gonna happen. It is can't win them all.
- 25:00Nope, he can't. I wouldn't be here.
- 25:02Rebound case who? Did you have in rebounds?
- 25:05Duran Duran from the Pistons? That's right.
- 25:07Yep. And he finished like close 9-9.
- 25:11Yeah, it was 10/1 of those days. All right, let's let's talk Polk
- 25:16County I club. Addison Bout, the president of
- 25:18the Polk County I club is here. Addison, good to see you again.
- 25:21You were in studio with us last year.
- 25:23You know, what I want to start with you is just kind of the
- 25:26enthusiasm around the athletic programs in particular.
- 25:29And I don't mean to sound like I'm throwing McCaffrey on the
- 25:31bus because Fred and I both like them.
- 25:33We both, Trent and I, we're both McCaffrey guys.
- 25:36But what a difference a year makes, right?
- 25:37I mean, I have to believe that the enthusiasm meter, if there
- 25:42is a thing when it comes to men's basketball, is over in the
- 25:45red zone because what a what a great year for Hawkeye men's
- 25:48basketball. Yeah, I completely agree with
- 25:51you. Yep.
- 25:52I think everyone's just real excited about, they were excited
- 25:55with the hire hiring. Yeah, I'm with you too.
- 25:57I've and everyone I talked to like really like Fran, he was,
- 26:01he was good to, he was good to our club, always came to our
- 26:04events and was really gracious. But yeah, I think it was time
- 26:08for a change. And when he came in and did what
- 26:11he did with essentially, let's be honest, a Drake team, you
- 26:16know, in the Big 10 and had some struggles here and there.
- 26:19But making that run to the Elite 8, I mean, yeah, fans are fans
- 26:24are really excited. No, no doubt about it.
- 26:25I think it's going to show up when season tickets go on as
- 26:28well. Right, yes, people want to jump
- 26:29aboard and definitely have that well, as we look towards a
- 26:32couple of weeks away, a little less than two weeks away coming
- 26:35up on that Wednesday, Addison, the pout County iclub before we
- 26:39get into the details, just the iclub these days.
- 26:42It was such a big thing. I just remember growing up and
- 26:45get the sticker in the mail how exciting that was for a young
- 26:47kid. All right here we go.
- 26:48I get to, I jump aboard, I'm I'm supporting the Hawkeyes.
- 26:51Well, now we have swarm, we have NIL, we have all these different
- 26:54components of what supporting the Hawkeye athletic program
- 26:57looks like and, and the I clubs. What does it mean today and what
- 27:01does the support of the I club? What does your guys's support
- 27:04now mean to the athletic department?
- 27:06Well, I think in some ways it hasn't changed, Trent, but in
- 27:09other ways from the like you said, from the financial aspect
- 27:13with all the not only with the swarm and with the Rev share and
- 27:18with but I think too what we try and do, yes, we are trying to be
- 27:22fundraise A fundraising branch of the university athletic
- 27:25department as well. But we try and do fun things and
- 27:28really engage fans here in the Des Moines area.
- 27:31Just like our event coming up. I mean, we're bringing a lot of
- 27:34the a lot of the coaches in people get to mingle with them,
- 27:38hear them speak in person. I think it's just, yeah, we,
- 27:41yes, we're trying to raise money, but other things we do,
- 27:45and maybe we'll talk about it here in a little bit with our
- 27:47golf outing is we just try and do fun things.
- 27:51Hawkeye related here in the Des Moines area.
- 27:53So the event itself, let's Fast forward Wednesday, May the 6th
- 27:57is is upon us. What does the night entail?
- 28:00I mean, how, how much time do you need to commit?
- 28:03If you're going to, you know, go to the event, you want to get
- 28:06there, just, you know, a little bit before it starts, mingle
- 28:09around, etcetera. Here, all the coaches.
- 28:11How long is the How long will the night go?
- 28:14I would say 2 1/2 to 3 hours total from from start to finish.
- 28:18We are really excited about this.
- 28:21We've bounced around venues in the past.
- 28:24Typically it's been hotels, but we're really excited about our
- 28:29new venue this year. It is called the Meridian.
- 28:32It is in a old Wells Fargo office building just South of
- 28:38University. The way I like to describe it to
- 28:41people, some is where the club car is, the club car restaurant
- 28:46on University, it's straight across University to the South
- 28:50from from there, it's just big office building.
- 28:53They've kind of converted it. Top floors are still some office
- 28:57space, but the bottom floor is this Meridian Event Center and
- 29:00it's just they did a really nice job.
- 29:02Mike Laval, he's a restaurant tour in the area that has other
- 29:08other event venues, but they did a really nice job with it, so
- 29:11we're excited. Jan Jensen will be there as well
- 29:14and after the retirement of Lisa Bluder after Caitlin Clark moves
- 29:18on to the WNBAI know a lot of people were tepid.
- 29:22Is this momentum going to continue?
- 29:24Well, the fan base certainly has continued to show up and Jan
- 29:28done a nice job. It hasn't ended the way people
- 29:30wanted the last two years in the NCAA Tournament, but the success
- 29:33is coming on the heels. What do you think about the
- 29:35women's program and the continued momentum?
- 29:38I'm sure you guys see as well with the I club of people
- 29:40supporting women's basketball. 100% And I think the the one
- 29:44thing when I think of Jan and what she has continued from Lisa
- 29:48is, is culture. I mean, girls want to go play
- 29:51there. It's a it's it's like a family.
- 29:53And you can tell in talking to the student athletes and fans
- 29:58going to games, they just, yeah, everyone loves Jan and yeah,
- 30:01unfortunately had a really good year, didn't end like we wanted
- 30:05it to. But I think everyone's just real
- 30:08excited about the future and I think we can tell and the good
- 30:11luck that he's had had in the transfer portal and it shows,
- 30:15too, what a good, good addition of Coach Barrett made on the
- 30:21program. Gary Dolphins going to MC it
- 30:23when the coaches what what will they do?
- 30:25Will they take the take the stage and do a few minutes?
- 30:29A little bit of a speech is? That yeah, it'll, it'll be more
- 30:31of a like AQ and a with, with, with Dolph also.
- 30:34We'll we always start off our program.
- 30:37Historically, Polk County I club has given out these football
- 30:41awards to senior football players and we'll start out with
- 30:46that. Kirk will Kirk will present
- 30:49those. The players unfortunately won't
- 30:51be in attendance. We do have some videos of them,
- 30:55but but yeah, we, we essentially 5:00.
- 30:58We start at social hour at 5:00, we do dinner at 6:00 and then
- 31:04our program will start at 6:30. We do you can if you for
- 31:09tickets, best way to go about it is to go to our Facebook page,
- 31:15Polk County iclub and there is a link to a purchase tickets
- 31:17there. There will be availability if
- 31:20you can't get to that and to get a ticket the night of we will
- 31:24have a have some tickets available, but I actually just
- 31:27looked this morning and ticket sales are going well.
- 31:32Awesome. You, you got to bring up one
- 31:35other guy because he's going to cry if he doesn't hear his name
- 31:38called Hawkeye Andy, is he? Probably.
- 31:42He's got to be bottom of the totem pole, right, in terms of
- 31:45board members, Is that right? He is one of our new members
- 31:49that that is true. But Andy, Andy is great.
- 31:52He's been a good addition to our board.
- 31:53He he really helps out at all of our events and is definitely,
- 31:57definitely a good addition. Well, if you need a driver to go
- 31:59anywhere, I mean, he's yes, he's an over the Rotary.
- 32:02Wheeled it down to Houston. He did, absolutely.
- 32:04And. Wheeled it down, there's a lot
- 32:06more fun than Wheeling back. I bet yes.
- 32:08No doubt about it. I bet.
- 32:09Hey, you mentioned the golf outing real quick.
- 32:11Wakanda is the scene of this event.
- 32:15Do you do you need help promoting this one or is this
- 32:18one of your? Bigger events, it's definitely
- 32:20one of our big bigger events. I mean, it's golf at Wakanda
- 32:24kind of sells itself. And with the opportunity to get
- 32:27to actually golf with a Hawkeye coach, player, former players
- 32:33like that, just as an example, like a lot of the most of the
- 32:37football coaches are there playing.
- 32:39They don't, I think, don't have confirmation for sure, but think
- 32:43Coach McCullum will be there also.
- 32:46And then some former players, like for example Riley Moss, he
- 32:50always comes back and play plays in it.
- 32:53But we do have anyone we do sell out.
- 32:56So we're 30. We kind of have to cap it at
- 33:00some point with groups playing in fivesomes.
- 33:02So it we don't want it to be that long of a day, but so the.
- 33:06Fivesome would include these quotes select.
- 33:08The celebrity, correct? Yep, for sure.
- 33:10So anyone interested in in playing in that event?
- 33:15Definitely. You can always find my contact
- 33:17information through our website, polkiclub.com or on our Facebook
- 33:23page. That's probably the best way.
- 33:25We do have some sponsorship opportunities, new ones this
- 33:28year available, so anyone's always feel free to reach
- 33:31outreach out to me. How many iclubs are there in the
- 33:33state? That is a good question and a
- 33:36question I should know the answer of I.
- 33:38We got a year till we see. You I, I do not know.
- 33:41I do know the ones that are the most active would be ours here
- 33:46in Polk County. Carroll County does a really
- 33:49good job and they've historically they have really
- 33:51good events and good attendance. Then then you get over to
- 33:54eastern Iowa and Linn County and Cedar Rapids and Johnson County
- 33:58and Iowa City. Those are the ones that are,
- 34:01from my understanding, of the most active.
- 34:03I think Carroll counties were Ben McCullum put the chairs away
- 34:06last year. Yes, that's.
- 34:07What I thought you're correct. What a what a great gesture on
- 34:10his part. Certainly ingratiated himself
- 34:13very quickly with some of the fans based at that event.
- 34:15Best of luck to you. Great to see you again, Addison.
- 34:18Coming up 13 days from now, May the 6th at the Meridian.
- 34:24Meridian. I hadn't heard of it.
- 34:27New place. So what what's what's the meal?
- 34:30Have you guys been figured that out yet?
- 34:32It is actually, yes, it's it's, it's a chicken, some sort of a
- 34:38chicken vegetable starch. So.
- 34:42Sounds good. Yes, sounds good.
- 34:45Great stuff. Best of luck to you.
- 34:47Polk County Iclub your website again and the Facebook page.
- 34:50Yep, website is Polk iclub.com. You can always reach me at at
- 34:56our e-mail to itsprettyeasypolkcountyiclub@gmail.com.
- 35:01That is pretty easy. Good stuff.
- 35:02Best of luck to that. Thank you very much.
- 35:04All out and away you guys go. We'll take a time out.
- 35:07Trents plays of the day. They're coming up next.
- 35:09Miller and Condon, glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 35:13Network. All right, final couple of
- 35:15minutes. Miller and Condon on a Thursday.
- 35:18Mike Palm will join us tomorrow. Kay, Kurt Repay, that's the line
- 35:23up tomorrow. The trio that will join us.
- 35:25We're going to do some chicken coop tomorrow.
- 35:27That's a great idea. It absolutely is, Trent, because
- 35:29I hate to be the only one eating free wings this week.
- 35:32Somebody's got to win some of those tomorrow.
- 35:35God, they're good. They really and truly are all
- 35:37right. Did you make any draft plays
- 35:39before we get into your place of the week?
- 35:41Did you get involved at all? I didn't.
- 35:43Neither did I. It just doesn't.
- 35:46And maybe if it was still open today, I probably would the lead
- 35:50up to it and just all right here, you know, you know me.
- 35:55I am very much a prisoner of the moment.
- 35:58You really are. I I am not a big look ahead
- 36:01person. I got to get through the day to
- 36:03get to the next day. So that is, I guess an event
- 36:06that does not work out very well for me if I could have made a
- 36:10bet. Mendoza number one overall.
- 36:13Ken, you have taught me. For a long time, a lot to make a
- 36:17little. Yes.
- 36:18So no, no, because I do believe it or not, I do listen to you.
- 36:21Thank you. I know some days it doesn't feel
- 36:23like it, but I do listen to you and I've listened to you about
- 36:27that because. The Methuselah of the team I.
- 36:30Had a buddy that used to do that all the time.
- 36:32Really, every college football Saturday he would take like 15
- 36:36huge favorites and then it just, and if he hits every week, yeah,
- 36:40it's going to be profitable and puts like 100 bucks down to win
- 36:43$73. But then that one week it
- 36:46doesn't happen. And you can't never get out of
- 36:47the hole. Exactly.
- 36:49And if you have two bad weeks, you're cooked.
- 36:50Yeah, absolutely. There's absolutely no way you
- 36:53can be profitable over the course of the season.
- 36:54So what would you have played? I'm here in Buzz Johnson, the
- 36:59San Diego State kit. Now that is also moved, but we
- 37:03talked about that on Monday and that was actually one that I
- 37:05kind of had circled because he was 32 1/2 on Monday.
- 37:09What was he now? It's moved to 29 1/2 and I heard
- 37:13some buzz somewhere in like the early 20s about him potentially
- 37:17going there. So that was one that I
- 37:19definitely would have got involved in.
- 37:20Sims over 1 1/2 quarterbacks first round.
- 37:24I go both ways. We know that teams.
- 37:27Lose their mind, Trent, if they need a quarterback.
- 37:30He's just not going to be. I don't think so.
- 37:32We. Were strong capital.
- 37:34See September ties Simpson to mid-october ties.
- 37:37Okay, get complain, but then. But then you can talk yourself
- 37:41in circles. Well, they had no running game.
- 37:43Their offensive line stunk. That's true.
- 37:45Including Katie Proctor on that offensive line.
- 37:49I, I, I talked myself in circles.
- 37:51A developmental year, you should have taken the money.
- 37:54But then you also look at next year's draft at the quarterback
- 37:56and it's so deep. And he might be have a great
- 37:59year. Make $4 million at Miami 4th.
- 38:02Or fifth round. And been a fourth or fifth round
- 38:04and that's got to be difficult. I think somebody will take him.
- 38:07I don't think somebody should take him somewhere before we get
- 38:11to the end of the first round. Those are the ones that kind of
- 38:14jump out for me, Ed. What other thing?
- 38:17I said on Monday during our draft show.
- 38:18Boy. That was fun by the way.
- 38:20And Oh yeah, we're going to get Russ on for like 5 minutes to
- 38:22recap. Oh yeah, right, because he makes
- 38:24the pick tonight. First pick.
- 38:26Be watching on television tonight when the Chiefs make.
- 38:28Their first pick? And you will see potentially, if
- 38:31the cameras are shooting at the right time, the guy that'll be
- 38:33handing the jersey to Roger Goodell is Russ Crew from
- 38:37Graphite. Graphite Construction Group is
- 38:39going to what a moment and we know how much he.
- 38:42Won. He loves the draft.
- 38:43He does as much as any fan. He does.
- 38:45You're going to find to have this just a really cool moment.
- 38:48So we'll recap that a little bit after towards the end of the
- 38:51first segment tomorrow, maybe 1:50 or 12:15, something like
- 38:53that. But those are just a couple.
- 38:57But I said on #4 felt like a lock that it was going to be
- 39:00love. Now I'm hearing all kinds of
- 39:02stuff, but I tell myself every year, don't listen to the noise
- 39:05at this point, don't listen to any of it.
- 39:07I think Sean Roberts is going to have a very fun night.
- 39:10I think these Giants are going to do very well.
- 39:12I could see them taking Cubs head bases loaded.
- 39:15Good God, couldn't get out of the infield.
- 39:17Stop. Stop saying you're not a Cubs
- 39:18fan. I am a Cubs fan, OK?
- 39:20You admitted. I think that the Giants will
- 39:24take maybe Sonny Styles with their five and then circle
- 39:27around the 10 and get Jordan Tyson.
- 39:29That'd be good. Yeah, I'll say.
- 39:31I'll say. I still have my concerns about
- 39:33Tyson. Do you boy man, he has been as a
- 39:36rocket ship in this draft. Can't stay healthy that's not a
- 39:40really good thing now when you're jumping up a level guy
- 39:43that couldn't stay healthy there has there been many of those
- 39:46guys that struggle with injuries as much as him and then oh
- 39:49they're completely that's. Why McCoy?
- 39:50The corner from Tennessee's. Falling is like a rock.
