- 0:13Speaker 1: of Exodus with chapter fifteen. Welcome to the Bible Study Podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I'm your host, Chris Christensen. Chapter fifteen is the Song
- 0:30Speaker 1: of Moses and Miriam. But first a word from this sponsor.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So what happened last time the Egyptians were destroyed in
- 0:39Speaker 1: the Red Sea? God was victorious, and the only appropriate
- 0:43Speaker 1: thing to do at this point is to sing, And
- 0:46Speaker 1: so the song of Moses and Marion. Then Moses and
- 0:50Speaker 1: the Israelites sang this song to the Lord. I will
- 0:53Speaker 1: sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted, both
- 0:57Speaker 1: horse and driver. He has hurled into the sea. The
- 1:00Speaker 1: Lord is my strength and my defense. He has become
- 1:03Speaker 1: my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him,
- 1:07Speaker 1: my father's God, and I will exalt him. The Lord
- 1:10Speaker 1: is a warrior. The Lord is his name. Pharaoh's chariots
- 1:14Speaker 1: and his army. He has hurled into the sea. The
- 1:17Speaker 1: best of Pharaoh's officers are drowned in the Red Sea.
- 1:20Speaker 1: The deep waters have covered them. They sank to the
- 1:23Speaker 1: depths like a stone. Your right hand, Lord was majestic
- 1:27Speaker 1: in power, your right hand, Lord, shattered the enemy. In
- 1:31Speaker 1: the greatness of your majesty, you threw down those who
- 1:34Speaker 1: opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger. It consumed them
- 1:38Speaker 1: like stubble. By the blasts of your nostrils. The waters
- 1:42Speaker 1: piled up, the surging waters stood up like a wall.
- 1:45Speaker 1: The deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.
- 1:48Speaker 1: The enemy boasted. I will pursue, I will overtake them.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I will divide the spoils. I will gorge myself on them.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.
- 1:58Speaker 1: But you blue with your breath, and the sea covered them.
- 2:02Speaker 1: They sank like lead in the mighty waters. Who among
- 2:05Speaker 1: the gods is like you? Lord, Who is like you?
- 2:08Speaker 1: Majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders. You stretched
- 2:13Speaker 1: out your right hand, and the earth swallows up your enemies.
- 2:17Speaker 1: In your unfailing love. You will lead the people you
- 2:20Speaker 1: have redeemed in your strength. You will guide them to
- 2:23Speaker 1: your holy dwelling. The nations will hear and tremble, Anguish
- 2:27Speaker 1: will grip the people of Felista, The chiefs of Edom
- 2:31Speaker 1: will be terrified, The leaders of Moab will be seized
- 2:34Speaker 1: with trembling, the people of Canaan will melt away. Terror
- 2:37Speaker 1: and dread will fall on them. By the power of
- 2:40Speaker 1: your arm they will be as still as a stone
- 2:44Speaker 1: until your people pass by, Lord, and till the people
- 2:47Speaker 1: you bought pass by, you will bring them in and
- 2:51Speaker 1: plant them on the mountain of your inheritance. The place
- 2:54Speaker 1: Lord you made for your dwelling. The sanctuary Lord your
- 2:58Speaker 1: hands established reigns forever and ever. This is an example
- 3:04Speaker 1: of praise. So it isn't thanksgiving per se. It isn't
- 3:08Speaker 1: thank you, Lord for you doing this. It is calling
- 3:12Speaker 1: out the characteristics of God and what God has done.
- 3:16Speaker 1: And that is praise, and it's something that should be
- 3:19Speaker 1: a normal part of our worship, both corporately and individually.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And it's a great example of this, this song that
- 3:28Speaker 1: just comes out of them when they realize what God
- 3:33Speaker 1: has done, that God has won the victory and they
- 3:35Speaker 1: haven't had to do anything. This is all on God,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and that God has destroyed this army, that God has
- 3:44Speaker 1: freed them from their bondage. They are no longer slaves
- 3:48Speaker 1: in Egypt, and at this bright shining moment, they remember
- 3:53Speaker 1: that and they praise God for it. When the pharaoh's horses,
- 3:59Speaker 1: chariots and horse went into the sea, the Lord brought
- 4:02Speaker 1: the waters of the sea back over them, but the
- 4:04Speaker 1: Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. Then Miriam,
- 4:08Speaker 1: the prophet, Aaron's sister, took a timbrel in her hand,
- 4:11Speaker 1: and all the women followed her with timbrels and dancing.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Miriam sang to them, sing to the Lord, for he
- 4:16Speaker 1: is highly exalted both horse and driver. He has hurled
- 4:21Speaker 1: into the sea the waters of Marah and Elim. Then
- 4:25Speaker 1: Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went
- 4:28Speaker 1: into the desert of Shure. For three days. They traveled
- 4:31Speaker 1: in the desert without finding water. When they came to Mahrah,
- 4:35Speaker 1: they could not drink its water because it was bitter.
- 4:38Speaker 1: That's why the place is called Mahrah. So the people
- 4:41Speaker 1: grumbled against Moses. What are we going to drink? Then
- 4:45Speaker 1: Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed
- 4:47Speaker 1: him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and the water became fit to drink. There the Lord
- 4:54Speaker 1: issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them
- 4:56Speaker 1: to the test. He said, if you listen carefully to
- 4:59Speaker 1: the Lord God and do what is right in his eyes.
- 5:02Speaker 1: If you pay attention to his commands and keep all
- 5:05Speaker 1: his decrees, I will not bring on you any of
- 5:08Speaker 1: the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am
- 5:11Speaker 1: the Lord who heals you. Then they came to Alien,
- 5:16Speaker 1: where they were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and
- 5:19Speaker 1: they camped there near the water. Now it's quite a
- 5:23Speaker 1: feat to get this sort of people, this numerous group
- 5:27Speaker 1: of people, through the desert, and you can imagine why
- 5:31Speaker 1: you would have trouble fighting water. It is a desert.
- 5:34Speaker 1: But God has provided. But their faith, which was really
- 5:39Speaker 1: good just a few days before, is already tested by
- 5:44Speaker 1: three days where they're not finding water. Now, at least
- 5:47Speaker 1: they don't say, did you bring us out here to
- 5:49Speaker 1: die this time? That'll come up again, But it is hard.
- 5:54Speaker 1: This journey that they've got ahead of them will test
- 5:58Speaker 1: their faith, and will they be faithful is the question.
- 6:06Speaker 1: It is easy for us to celebrate when things are
- 6:09Speaker 1: going well, and that's what they did. Right when they
- 6:13Speaker 1: saw that God had prevailed over the Egyptians. It wasn't
- 6:17Speaker 1: hard for them to praise God. It wasn't hard for
- 6:21Speaker 1: them to see the glory and the majesty of God.
- 6:24Speaker 1: But remember just a few moments before that, they were
- 6:28Speaker 1: asking Moses whether there were no graves in Egypt before them.
- 6:32Speaker 1: They did not see through the problem to what God
- 6:38Speaker 1: would do. They didn't have faith that God was doing
- 6:42Speaker 1: what God intended and that everything was in control. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's hard for us too, when things seem out of
- 6:53Speaker 1: control in our lives, in our families, in our work,
- 6:56Speaker 1: in our countries, to believe that God is in control.
- 7:05Speaker 1: We believe what we see. Sometimes well that's not really belief,
- 7:11Speaker 1: but it is hard for us to get past what
- 7:14Speaker 1: we see, and when we don't see a way out,
- 7:17Speaker 1: it's hard to put your faith in God, that God
- 7:20Speaker 1: is still there, that God still cares, and that God
- 7:24Speaker 1: has a planned. It's a whole lot easier to do
- 7:28Speaker 1: that when the enemy is defeated, when the situation's resolved,
- 7:33Speaker 1: when the sickness is healed, when the confusion is lifted.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Then it is in the middle of it. It was
- 7:42Speaker 1: true for them, and it is true for us as well.
- 7:46Speaker 1: And with that, we're going to end this episode this
- 7:48Speaker 1: rather shorter episode of the Bible Study podcast. If you
