- 0:46Speaker 3: of the questions that you have. I'm Andrew de Checko,
- 0:48Speaker 3: Eagles beat reporter for Insidethebirds dot com and with me
- 0:51Speaker 3: today my special friend at Kratz from who he covers
- 0:57Speaker 3: the Eagles for Sports Illustrated at How you.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Doing all right? Good to be this special friend. I
- 1:00Speaker 2: think you meant special guests, my good friend. Either way,
- 1:04Speaker 2: it all applies. Yeah, right, happy to be here, Andrew,
- 1:07Speaker 2: Thanks thanks for having me back.
- 1:08Speaker 3: So yeah, of course, so we have a lot to
- 1:10Speaker 3: get into because you and I haven't had a chance
- 1:12Speaker 3: to unpack a lot of these things here. So over
- 1:14Speaker 3: the weekend Sunday qualifies as the weekend. There was a
- 1:18Speaker 3: report that came out from our buddy Jimmy Kempski that
- 1:21Speaker 3: Vic Fango informed the Eagles that he was going to
- 1:24Speaker 3: retire and it was Team Brass who convinced him to
- 1:27Speaker 3: return for another season, at least one more season, I
- 1:30Speaker 3: think was the wording.
- 1:31Speaker 2: There. Are you surprised at all?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Because even last season after the Super Bowl, there was
- 1:36Speaker 3: some contemplation there from Vic Fangio that he was maybe
- 1:39Speaker 3: considering walking away. And you have to remember he's going
- 1:42Speaker 3: to be sixty eight years old before the start of
- 1:44Speaker 3: the regular season. There's family dynamics that sometimes planted these things.
- 1:48Speaker 3: He's been coaching for over four decades, and you have
- 1:52Speaker 3: to always think to yourself, if you're Vic Fangil, I imagine,
- 1:56Speaker 3: can you go through another season where you have to
- 1:59Speaker 3: prepare and you have to get a number of different
- 2:01Speaker 3: players on board and go through the grind of an
- 2:03Speaker 3: every day of a season.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you're right. It is a grind. And you
- 2:07Speaker 2: know he's at that age where maybe he wants to
- 2:10Speaker 2: take a little step back and enjoy life a little
- 2:12Speaker 2: bit more because you know how it is. These guys
- 2:14Speaker 2: put in long hours, long hard hours, getting game plans together,
- 2:20Speaker 2: helping players improve, helping them with their assignments week to week.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So it is very strenuous and for someone of Vic's age.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And I don't want to sound you know, agis or
- 2:31Speaker 2: anything because I'm getting up there myself. No, you're not
- 2:34Speaker 2: quite that. I'm just saying that, you know, it is.
- 2:37Speaker 2: It does become a grind. And it's interesting because you know,
- 2:41Speaker 2: when you talk to some of the players, you'd ask
- 2:43Speaker 2: them about Vic, and they weren't sure he was going
- 2:46Speaker 2: to come back. And I think one thing that was interesting,
- 2:49Speaker 2: if you remember a press conference but from Michael Clay,
- 2:53Speaker 2: he mentioned he said, you know, Vic said when he retires,
- 2:56Speaker 2: he wants to be a special teams coordinator because he
- 2:59Speaker 2: thinks that special teams coordinators have it so easy. I guess,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you know, he brought up the retirement word late in
- 3:06Speaker 2: the season, so you know that maybe there's some talk
- 3:08Speaker 2: about him retiring as the season went on. And I
- 3:12Speaker 2: think as we sit here now days before the Super Bowl,
- 3:15Speaker 2: super Bowl week, that Vic is supposed to come back.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I think the Eagles have convinced him to return, and
- 3:22Speaker 2: he'll be back, but they have to start planning for
- 3:24Speaker 2: that day when Vic walks away, and it probably will
- 3:28Speaker 2: be after this season. Do you think he's coming back?
- 3:31Speaker 2: I do.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I think that's the expectation. But you bring up an
- 3:34Speaker 3: interesting point, and it's a great segue. Who would be
- 3:37Speaker 3: the heir apparent to Vic Vangio when in fact he
- 3:40Speaker 3: does decide to walk away. You have to look at
- 3:43Speaker 3: the staff right now, and Jimmy's report included that they
- 3:47Speaker 3: entertain the possibility of a Jonathan Gannon, who of course
- 3:50Speaker 3: now is with the Green Bay Packers, and I believe
- 3:53Speaker 3: it was Jim Schwartz as well. He's still under contract
- 3:55Speaker 3: with the Cleveland Browns. But internally, to me, I look
- 3:59Speaker 3: at Clint Hurt, who has been a defensive coordinator for
- 4:02Speaker 3: two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks a couple of years ago.
- 4:05Speaker 3: He would be someone who has proven that he can
- 4:07Speaker 3: do it. He has that commanding presence. But if you're
- 4:10Speaker 3: looking for a younger coach who I believe would have
- 4:13Speaker 3: Vic Vangio's blessing and stamp of approval, it's going to
- 4:17Speaker 3: be Joe Casper, who was newly appointed defensive backs coach.
- 4:21Speaker 3: He replaces Christian Parker.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see if Fangio does return,
- 4:27Speaker 2: and that is the expectation what Casper does with that secondary.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I mean he's inheriting two Pro Bowl players, I'm sorry,
- 4:34Speaker 2: all Pro players in Quannon Mitchell and Cooper de Jen.
- 4:38Speaker 2: You know, he's got a safety, a young safety, and
- 4:40Speaker 2: Andrew mccouba. So it'll be interesting to see how his
- 4:43Speaker 2: secondary does this year. But yeah, he would be somebody
- 4:46Speaker 2: that is young, kind of like the OC direction. They
- 4:49Speaker 2: went to one young guy and then a passing game
- 4:51Speaker 2: coordinator also in his thirties. But I love Clint Hurt.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I think he has done wonders with this defensive line.
- 4:59Speaker 2: You mentioned the DC experience he had in Seattle, but
- 5:02Speaker 2: I think what he's done with players like Thomas Booker
- 5:05Speaker 2: for instance, great example. Yeah, who the Eagles traded away
- 5:09Speaker 2: to the Raiders. It's a shame because they probably could
- 5:12Speaker 2: have used a little extra depth in that d tackle spot.
- 5:15Speaker 2: But what he's done with Jordan Davis, turning him into
- 5:19Speaker 2: a pass rusher, getting him to buy into his body
- 5:22Speaker 2: to lose weight, what he's done with Marto, with Jomo,
- 5:24Speaker 2: a seventh round pick Jalen Carter, he's helped develop I mean,
- 5:27Speaker 2: there was a lot of expectation for Jalen, but still
- 5:30Speaker 2: you have to bring someone like that along and he's
- 5:32Speaker 2: not a fantastic job. I would love to see Clint
- 5:35Speaker 2: Hurt promoted, and I know he had a DC interview
- 5:38Speaker 2: I think with the Dolphins, didn't get the job, so
- 5:41Speaker 2: he probably will be back. And if if Fangio does
- 5:46Speaker 2: retire after the twenty twenty six twenty twenty seventh season,
- 5:50Speaker 2: I'd love to see Clint Hurt get it. But let's
- 5:52Speaker 2: not forget too. You mentioned Jim Schwartz, but I think
- 5:56Speaker 2: too Sean McDermott. I know he wants to take a
- 5:58Speaker 2: year off, but he's a Philly guy. You know, his
- 6:02Speaker 2: brother is the president of the Philadelphia Union Soccer Club.
- 6:06Speaker 2: His parents still live in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I
- 6:09Speaker 2: mean he I think he'd be fantastic as a DC.
- 6:11Speaker 2: And if you want to take it one step further,
- 6:14Speaker 2: if the Eagles struggle next season and Nick Siriani might
- 6:18Speaker 2: you know, I don't want to get ahead of myself here,
- 6:20Speaker 2: but McDermott is a tailor made ready head coach, and
- 6:24Speaker 2: he can coach the defense too.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Now, I do want to get into your conversations with
- 6:28Speaker 3: Clint Hurt, because I know you sat down with him
- 6:30Speaker 3: at the Super Bowl last year, and we both talked.
- 6:34Speaker 2: To him in training camp.
- 6:35Speaker 3: But just a little background on Joe Casper, who was
- 6:39Speaker 3: who elevated into Christian Parker's role. Christian Parker, anyone who's
- 6:43Speaker 3: listened or read my work can already you already know
- 6:46Speaker 3: how highly I think of him, and I think he's
- 6:48Speaker 3: going to have tremendous success with the Dallas Cowboys as
- 6:50Speaker 3: their defensive coordinator. But Joe Casper is he was brought
- 6:54Speaker 3: on as a defensive assistant in twenty twenty two, or
- 6:57Speaker 3: I think he was there in twenty one and twenty two,
- 7:00Speaker 3: and then Vic Fanjo was kind of hanging around the
- 7:02Speaker 3: Eagles a little bit during the twenty two season. Joe
- 7:06Speaker 3: Casper made an impression. Vic Fango becomes a defensive coordinator
- 7:09Speaker 3: with the Miami Dolphins, brings Joe Casper with him as
- 7:11Speaker 3: the safeties coach, and then when Vick is sort of
- 7:15Speaker 3: enshrined there as the Eagles defensive coordinator, he brings Joe
- 7:18Speaker 3: Casper over to coach the safeties here, really young coach,
- 7:22Speaker 3: well versed in the fundamentals and the detail. I remember
- 7:26Speaker 3: talking to one player late in the season. He mentioned
- 7:29Speaker 3: he lets us play. It's not robotic, but he coaches
- 7:31Speaker 3: as hard and so that is a coach that It's
- 7:34Speaker 3: still a little early. He has to, you know, he
- 7:36Speaker 3: has to be able to take on an elevated role
- 7:39Speaker 3: and prove that he can handle it. But I think
- 7:41Speaker 3: in the future he's someone who I know is well
- 7:43Speaker 3: regarded in NFL circles and would make some sense.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, this is a good proving ground for him,
- 7:48Speaker 2: and this season coming up, like I mentioned, with the
- 7:50Speaker 2: with the two all pros, and you know, a secondary
- 7:53Speaker 2: that is pretty good and should get better, right, I
- 7:56Speaker 2: mean you need another corner, you know, probably, you know,
- 8:00Speaker 2: you need another safety, probably depending what they did with Blankenship.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But yeah, I like Joe Casper too. I can't wait
- 8:05Speaker 2: to see what he does. You have to lose Christian Parker,
- 8:08Speaker 2: and that's why I think, you know Fangio is coming back,
- 8:11Speaker 2: because I'd be really surprised if the Eagles were caught
- 8:13Speaker 2: off guard by this and let Parker walk out the door.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I think if Fangio wasn't coming back, or there was
- 8:19Speaker 2: still hesitation on his part that Christian Parker would still
- 8:23Speaker 2: be here. But now he's going to the Dallas Cowboys,
- 8:25Speaker 2: you know, the biggest rival for the Philadelphia Eagles, and
- 8:28Speaker 2: I think he's a great coach and I think he
- 8:30Speaker 2: is exactly what that Cowboys team needs. Defense was their
- 8:34Speaker 2: problem all year, and I think Christian Parker is such
- 8:36Speaker 2: a good coach and he'll bring that defense along and
- 8:39Speaker 2: you hate to see it for a team that everybody
- 8:41Speaker 2: in Philadelphia despises, but you know, Parker's a good coach
- 8:44Speaker 2: and we'll see what Casper does. I like Casper a
- 8:47Speaker 2: lot too. I think the secondary won't skip a beat.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Maybe it'll get better, Maybe he'll develop some young guys
- 8:51Speaker 2: because I think they're going to bring some other guys
- 8:53Speaker 2: in and we'll see how Casper does in that role. Yeah.
- 8:56Speaker 3: I think when you're looking at young players with Joe
- 8:58Speaker 3: Casper when he was over seeing the safety room, ed
- 9:01Speaker 3: you look at the progression of Drew mccooba, who it's
- 9:04Speaker 3: let's be frank. It started out a little shaky, but
- 9:06Speaker 3: he really settled in as a rookie and started being
- 9:09Speaker 3: able to play with more confidence being more assignment sound,
- 9:12Speaker 3: and then even to a lesser degree, you look at
- 9:15Speaker 3: someone like and Andre sam on the practice squad who
- 9:17Speaker 3: was elevated and they needed to depend on him, and
- 9:19Speaker 3: I would make the argument that he was probably in
- 9:21Speaker 3: front of Sidney Brown by the time the season ended.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Brandon Johnson did a nice job cross training from nickel
- 9:26Speaker 3: corner to safety under his tutelage. So I think that
- 9:30Speaker 3: he is a really interesting coach who is going to
- 9:33Speaker 3: coach players hard and honing in on the details and fundamentals. Fundamentals.
- 9:38Speaker 3: But I also wanted to talk to you about Clint
- 9:40Speaker 3: Hurt because from a broader point of view, I feel
- 9:44Speaker 3: like there's many who maybe have questions as to what
- 9:46Speaker 3: the position coaches are all about what their background is.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And you wrote a really good story back to last
- 9:52Speaker 3: February about Clint Hurt having sat down with them.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yeah, particularly as it pertains the Jordan Davis, and we
- 9:59Speaker 2: all saw Jordan Davis had a Pro Bowl style year
- 10:02Speaker 2: and All Pro style year. He didn't get any of
- 10:04Speaker 2: those accolades, but you know, there's no doubt his game
- 10:06Speaker 2: took a huge step forward, and I credit Clint Hurt
- 10:10Speaker 2: for all of that. You know, Jordan Davis was a
- 10:13Speaker 2: six to six, three hundred and fifty pound defensive tackle,
- 10:16Speaker 2: nose tackle throughout his whole life, and his job was
- 10:19Speaker 2: to occupy blockers, you know, take on double teams, kind
- 10:22Speaker 2: of anchor in and let linebackers flow to the football
- 10:26Speaker 2: without being blocked. That was his job and that was
- 10:29Speaker 2: his mindset week in and week after his whole life.
- 10:31Speaker 2: And then Clint Hurt comes along and he wants Jordan
- 10:34Speaker 2: to become more refined in his pass rush. He doesn't
- 10:36Speaker 2: want him to be just an anchor soaking up the
- 10:39Speaker 2: double teams. He wants Jordan Davis to get quicker off
- 10:42Speaker 2: the ball, to put pressure on the quarterback, to play
- 10:46Speaker 2: a vast majority of snaps, and to take on one
- 10:48Speaker 2: on one blocks and not just consume a double team.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And Jordan really ate that up and he adapted to it,
- 10:56Speaker 2: and Clint Hurt really worked on that. But off the field,
- 10:58Speaker 2: he worked on his mindset too. I think if you
- 11:01Speaker 2: want to point to a reason Jordan wanted to lose
- 11:02Speaker 2: that weight, it was I think Clint Hurt was on him,
- 11:05Speaker 2: showing support, believing in him. And you know, to me,
- 11:10Speaker 2: Jordan Davis is a Clint Hurt creation, and I think
- 11:12Speaker 2: you might be able to say the same about Marlo Jomo. Now,
- 11:14Speaker 2: Marlo Joe was, you know, his football IQ was huge,
- 11:18Speaker 2: so high, but still you have to develop that technique.
- 11:21Speaker 2: You have to make the players believe in themselves. And
- 11:24Speaker 2: I think Clint Hurt is very good at that. He's
- 11:26Speaker 2: a great teacher, and I think the results have shown
- 11:29Speaker 2: themselves with Jordan Davis, Marla Jomo, Thomas Booker, you know,
- 11:33Speaker 2: but just getting Davis to kind of buy into that,
- 11:36Speaker 2: I think was huge, and Clint Hurt is the man
- 11:39Speaker 2: responsible for it.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Yeah, that's great insight there. So you sat down with
- 11:42Speaker 3: Clint Hurt. I sat down actually with Christian Parker and
- 11:45Speaker 3: Bobby King. And Bobby King's a coach that I think
- 11:48Speaker 3: we should talk a little bit about because we mentioned
- 11:50Speaker 3: Casper and we mentioned Clint Hurt. But Bobby King, in
- 11:53Speaker 3: my estimation anyway, has the shops to become a defensive
- 11:57Speaker 3: coordinator in the future. When you talk about block destructure University,
- 12:00Speaker 3: that's something that he talks often about when in doubt,
- 12:03Speaker 3: choose violence, all those different things. He has block destruction
- 12:07Speaker 3: community College. Any young player who comes through the ranks
- 12:10Speaker 3: with him, they have to graduate to block destruction you
- 12:13Speaker 3: by the end of training camp. And I think when
- 12:16Speaker 3: you look at the way the linebackers play with the Eagles,
- 12:20Speaker 3: they're all assignments sound first and foremost, but they run
- 12:22Speaker 3: through blocks. The hand usage is intentional, it is violent,
- 12:26Speaker 3: and he gets them to play with tremendous detail. He
- 12:29Speaker 3: also has an authoritative approach. And you remember watching Thursday
- 12:32Speaker 3: practices where he's out there and he's doing the strip circuit.
- 12:35Speaker 3: He's sort of governing that strip circuit drill. He's just
- 12:39Speaker 3: he looks like like someone who would have played linebacker
- 12:42Speaker 3: back in the day. He may have, but I think
- 12:44Speaker 3: that he has what it takes if he wants to
- 12:46Speaker 3: to eventually be a defensive coordinator himself.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Absolutely. Yeah, he gets overlooked here, but yeah, he's got
- 12:52Speaker 2: that demeanor too. It looks like, you know, he'd bite
- 12:54Speaker 2: your face off. He's rugged, very rugged. That's it's a
- 12:57Speaker 2: good word. Yeah, but he's got that demeanor. And I
- 13:00Speaker 2: think he's got the football chops, like you say, and
- 13:03Speaker 2: you look at the linebackers. The Eagles have really kind
- 13:05Speaker 2: of invested in that room, and you see guys like
- 13:09Speaker 2: Zach Bonn who came on you know, he was a
- 13:12Speaker 2: special teams guy in New Orleans, and that's always been
- 13:14Speaker 2: my question is how in the world did the Saints
- 13:16Speaker 2: let Zach Bond get away. But then you get Bobby
- 13:18Speaker 2: King and Jeremiah Washburn kind of teaming up with them,
- 13:22Speaker 2: and he's one of the best linebackers in the league.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Same with Niakobe Dean. And now you bring in the
- 13:26Speaker 2: first round pick Jehad Campbell, and now you have Bobby
- 13:30Speaker 2: King working with him. And you know, these are talented players,
- 13:33Speaker 2: but when they come into the league, they have to learn.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I think Bobby King, again, like her, is a terrific teacher,
- 13:39Speaker 2: gets these guys to understand what he's teaching them and
- 13:42Speaker 2: then they go out onto the field and do it.
- 13:44Speaker 2: But yeah, Bobby King, for sure is someone that I'm
- 13:48Speaker 2: surprised he hasn't gotten a look at this point just
- 13:51Speaker 2: because of the type of teacher he is and what
- 13:53Speaker 2: he's done with this Eagles linebacker room. I can tell
- 13:56Speaker 2: you're a lot.
- 13:56Speaker 3: You're wired kind of like I am in that you
- 13:59Speaker 3: enjoy talking to and sitting down with position coaches whenever
- 14:02Speaker 3: you get a chance, because you all they offer a
- 14:04Speaker 3: different type of insight that you're not ordinarily going.
- 14:06Speaker 2: To get yeah, exactly right. And you know, we don't
- 14:08Speaker 2: get to sit down with him as often probably as
- 14:10Speaker 2: we would like. But when we get the opportunity, man,
- 14:13Speaker 2: it's great to pick their brain about players, about their philosophy,
- 14:16Speaker 2: about their about their scheme. And King is certainly one
- 14:20Speaker 2: of those guys. He's a he's a good guy to
- 14:21Speaker 2: talk to you. Like I say, he's pretty intense, right,
- 14:23Speaker 2: He's very very intense, very intense, you know, so I
- 14:26Speaker 2: couldn't imagine what he's like on game day when you
- 14:28Speaker 2: know he's in that locker room getting these guys ready
- 14:30Speaker 2: to play, because he's pretty intense around us on a
- 14:32Speaker 2: on a Pursday afternoon or whenever we sit down and
- 14:34Speaker 2: talk to him, he sure is.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Well, when we get back, we're going to talk about
- 14:38Speaker 3: Sean Mannion, the newly minted offensive coordinator and passing game coordinator,
- 14:43Speaker 3: Josh Gizzard. You're listening to the Pro Football Report, presented

- 18:12Speaker 3: And look, the Eagles had a weeks long search for
- 18:17Speaker 3: their offensive coordinator, and I know that there was a
- 18:20Speaker 3: lot of angst based off of what I saw on
- 18:22Speaker 3: social media, but I am intrigued with the addition of
- 18:26Speaker 3: Seawan Mannion based off of people I've spoken to, based
- 18:30Speaker 3: off of the coaching tree, that he's sort of coming
- 18:33Speaker 3: out from under to back things up. Seawan Mannion was
- 18:37Speaker 3: originally drafted in twenty fifteen in the third round by
- 18:40Speaker 3: the Saint Louis Rams, where he was teammates with Nick
- 18:43Speaker 3: Foles and.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Case Keenum Kase keanum Okay, and so he came up
- 18:49Speaker 2: through Sean McVay.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Of course, then you have Clint Kobiac because he also
- 18:53Speaker 3: played for the Seahawks, he played for the Vikings, So
- 18:55Speaker 3: Kevin Stefanski, Kevin O'Connell, a lot of bright offensive mind
- 19:00Speaker 3: that have coaching trees all over the NFL right now.
- 19:03Speaker 3: He's just thirty three years old. But and I should
- 19:06Speaker 3: also mention that he was the assistant quarterbacks coach for
- 19:09Speaker 3: the Packers in twenty twenty four and then elevated to
- 19:12Speaker 3: the quarterbacks role in twenty twenty five. What we have
- 19:14Speaker 3: to go off of is Jordan Love had the best
- 19:18Speaker 3: season of his young career. Malik Willis, who was sort
- 19:20Speaker 3: of a young reclamation project, had the best season of
- 19:23Speaker 3: his career, and based off of everything that I've gathered
- 19:26Speaker 3: the Eagles are getting a bright minded offensive coach who
- 19:31Speaker 3: has a lot of ideas, and I'm curious to see
- 19:33Speaker 3: what direction he heads this offense.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he mentioned the extensive search. I think
- 19:39Speaker 2: they brought in maybe fifteen candidates over the fifteen days
- 19:42Speaker 2: it took, and I think Nick Sirianni kind of spelled
- 19:46Speaker 2: it out at the end. He said, we were waiting
- 19:47Speaker 2: for the right candidate to reveal himself. And you know,
- 19:50Speaker 2: that was the net that they cast, and they were
- 19:52Speaker 2: looking at a lot of things. They were learning a
- 19:53Speaker 2: lot about their roster and their offense too from these
- 19:58Speaker 2: candidates that were coming in. But you know, I like
- 20:00Speaker 2: the fact that he's a young guy. He's considered an
- 20:03Speaker 2: up and comer. The people in Green Bay think he's
- 20:05Speaker 2: going to be a head coach one day. I much
- 20:08Speaker 2: prefer that over more veteran voice, like say, maybe a
- 20:13Speaker 2: Matt Naggy. I never thought Mike McDaniel was a good
- 20:16Speaker 2: fit here. I never thought Brian Dable was a good fit.
- 20:19Speaker 2: I thought Matt Matt Nagy to me was intriguing, and
- 20:21Speaker 2: now he was just named the Giants offensive coordinator. But
- 20:25Speaker 2: I like the approach. I like them, bringing in kind
- 20:27Speaker 2: of a younger voice, someone that can relate to the players.
- 20:30Speaker 2: This guy apparently has a mind like a like an elephant. Man.
- 20:33Speaker 2: He can just remember this, he can remember plays. He
- 20:35Speaker 2: can remember what was done against him, you know, back
- 20:38Speaker 2: in the first quarter, if you're in the fourth quarter.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I mean to me, he's somebody that's certainly worth a
- 20:43Speaker 2: gamble bringing him in. And like you said, he's learned
- 20:48Speaker 2: from a lot of great minds in this league. Matt Lafleur,
- 20:50Speaker 2: you know, a very good offensive coach. He's been in
- 20:52Speaker 2: his system for a couple of years. Manion's played the game.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Kellen Moore was a backup quarterback in this league. You know,
- 20:58Speaker 2: when you see it from a quarterbacks, when you're in
- 21:00Speaker 2: a huddle, when you're at the line of scrimmage going
- 21:02Speaker 2: up against the team. To me, that's invaluable experience. And
- 21:05Speaker 2: I like the fact that Shwana has played the game.
- 21:08Speaker 3: As one person put it to me, it was very
- 21:10Speaker 3: obvious that when his playing career was over that he
- 21:13Speaker 3: was going to be a successful coach at the next level.
- 21:16Speaker 3: I was told that his knowledge of the game and
- 21:19Speaker 3: ability to teach it is top notch, and at Oregon
- 21:22Speaker 3: State playing under Mike Riley, they had a very intricate
- 21:25Speaker 3: West Coast system and it was understood that whatever quarterback
- 21:28Speaker 3: kind of went through that it took a little bit
- 21:31Speaker 3: of time, but Sean Madding had mastered it from day
- 21:34Speaker 3: one and he was a four year starter for that program.
- 21:37Speaker 3: So you have to look at now, what could he
- 21:40Speaker 3: potentially be bringing to this Eagles offense.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Could it be a West Coast style.
- 21:44Speaker 3: If so, that's going to be very timing based. You're
- 21:47Speaker 3: going to see probably more motion if we're going off
- 21:50Speaker 3: of what they did with the Packers, the more under
- 21:51Speaker 3: center play action, and so it's a stark contrast to
- 21:57Speaker 3: what the Eagles have done in the past. So now
- 21:59Speaker 3: the question becomes will they be able to shape the
- 22:02Speaker 3: offense around some of those ideologies.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Yeah? I love all those things. I love the under
- 22:06Speaker 2: center play action, I love the motion. You know, Nick
- 22:09Speaker 2: has always said you don't motion just the motion, but
- 22:12Speaker 2: you know, I don't always agree with that. I think
- 22:13Speaker 2: you can motion just to motions. They get the other deef,
- 22:16Speaker 2: to get the defense to think about exactly what you're
- 22:19Speaker 2: trying to do, even if it's just the motion, you know,
- 22:21Speaker 2: just to throw them off but I think by motioning
- 22:23Speaker 2: that gives the defense something else to think about. I'd
- 22:25Speaker 2: like to see this offense be a little more motion based.
- 22:29Speaker 2: You know a story I read about Manion and I
- 22:33Speaker 2: can't wait to talk to him to ask how true
- 22:34Speaker 2: this is. I'm assuming it is. What do you think
- 22:36Speaker 2: it will be? By the way, when we do get
- 22:37Speaker 2: to talk to him, well, I mean, I don't think
- 22:39Speaker 2: we talked to Kellen or Petullo or they Gamphire or
- 22:43Speaker 2: vic until OTAs in May. I think it was so now,
- 22:47Speaker 2: you know, we did get Petullo at the Super Bowl
- 22:49Speaker 2: last year, so we kind of and we kind of
- 22:51Speaker 2: knew at that time Callen was going to leave, so
- 22:53Speaker 2: we were able to kind of get his philosophy and
- 22:56Speaker 2: you know, his thoughts on being an OC. That was
- 22:59Speaker 2: an advantage. But we don't have that. So I'm assuming
- 23:01Speaker 2: it's going to be then. I don't think they'll make
- 23:02Speaker 2: him available any sooner than that. But I read a
- 23:05Speaker 2: story where when he was seven years old, his dad
- 23:07Speaker 2: took him to a high school football game. I think
- 23:09Speaker 2: his dad was a high school football coach, and Sean
- 23:11Speaker 2: brought along a yellow, padded notebook and he took notes
- 23:14Speaker 2: about the game, and he wrote down everything that he saw.
- 23:16Speaker 2: He had questions, filled up the notebook and he showed
- 23:20Speaker 2: his dad and they talked about it. His dad kept
- 23:22Speaker 2: it and gave it to him. I think when he
- 23:23Speaker 2: got drafted, or maybe when he got his first head
- 23:25Speaker 2: coaching or first coaching job, I think his dad gave
- 23:29Speaker 2: him that notebook back. They kept it, and I thought
- 23:31Speaker 2: it was an interesting parallel when you think about Andy Reid,
- 23:34Speaker 2: another quarterbacks coach who came from the Packers to be
- 23:37Speaker 2: the head coach all the way back in nineteen ninety nine. Remember,
- 23:40Speaker 2: Andy Reid was famous for this binder that he kept,
- 23:42Speaker 2: this this ten pound loose leaf binder that he brought
- 23:46Speaker 2: to the interview and he was so thorough and so detailed,
- 23:49Speaker 2: but everything was right there. And that's kind of what
- 23:52Speaker 2: it reminded me of when I read this story about
- 23:53Speaker 2: Sean having this yellow line notebook. Like man, dude's seven
- 23:56Speaker 2: years old and he's into football, and he's asking good
- 23:59Speaker 2: quotquessions and he's writing down good notes. And his dad
- 24:01Speaker 2: was really impressed by that. So, you know, that's one
- 24:03Speaker 2: of the things I can't wait to talk to Sean about.
- 24:06Speaker 2: I think just An interesting parallel.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it is, And I think what also helps Sean
- 24:10Speaker 3: Mannion's credibility AT is that he played the position at
- 24:13Speaker 3: the highest level. So if you are thirty three years
- 24:16Speaker 3: old and now all of a sudden you have to
- 24:17Speaker 3: command a room. He commanded the quarterbacks room, but now
- 24:20Speaker 3: to a much larger audience. I do believe that that
- 24:23Speaker 3: will help.
- 24:24Speaker 2: With the buy in.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Now, there's some school thought that you don't want to
- 24:28Speaker 3: completely rip out the foundation of the offense and reimagine
- 24:31Speaker 3: it because it does take time and it's going to
- 24:33Speaker 3: require some patience. It's not going to be instantaneous. But
- 24:38Speaker 3: how much how many concessions should he realistically make to
- 24:42Speaker 3: maybe acquiesce to Jalen Hurts, I do think that for
- 24:45Speaker 3: Seawan Mannion to really evolve this offense and take it
- 24:48Speaker 3: to the next step, he has to be able to
- 24:51Speaker 3: see the offense through his vision and maybe not take.
- 24:54Speaker 2: As much interference.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Because a lot of what we've seen over the last
- 24:58Speaker 3: really five years AT has been on offense that's largely stationary.
- 25:02Speaker 3: It's a little static at times, it's compressed. They don't
- 25:05Speaker 3: open things up enough. There's not a lot of middle
- 25:08Speaker 3: of the field utilization.
- 25:09Speaker 2: And things like that.
- 25:10Speaker 3: I think Sean Madnion needs to be able.
- 25:11Speaker 2: To run his offense without a whole lot of interference. Yeah,
- 25:15Speaker 2: and that's kind of Siriani's belief is a very conservative
- 25:18Speaker 2: approach on offense. He doesn't want to put the ball
- 25:20Speaker 2: in harm's way, you know. He brings that up, especially
- 25:23Speaker 2: late in the season. It seemed like he brought it
- 25:24Speaker 2: up in just about every press conference. How good they
- 25:27Speaker 2: are when they win the turnover battle forty two and three,
- 25:30Speaker 2: I think when they win that turnover battle. So they
- 25:33Speaker 2: have a very aggressive or very conservative I should say
- 25:36Speaker 2: approached what they want Jalen to do with the football.
- 25:39Speaker 2: But I think we see with Sam Donald in the
- 25:41Speaker 2: Super Bowl. Sam Donald is prone to interceptions. I think
- 25:44Speaker 2: he's one of the top throwers of interceptions this year,
- 25:48Speaker 2: has a lot of them in his career, and here
- 25:49Speaker 2: he is in the Super Bowl. So you can overcome things,
- 25:52Speaker 2: especially if you have a solid defense like the Eagles
- 25:54Speaker 2: are expected to. So yeah, it would be nice to
- 25:58Speaker 2: see if Manion can uh coax. And I think it's
- 26:01Speaker 2: the Siriani thing coax more of an aggressive approach from
- 26:04Speaker 2: the head coach.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Now ordinarily in this second segment ed, we do the
- 26:08Speaker 3: injuries injury report, but their Eagles aren't playing anymore. So
- 26:13Speaker 3: while it is ordinarily time for this week's injury review,
- 26:17Speaker 3: brought to you by the attorneys at Begley, Carlin and Mandio,
- 26:19Speaker 3: contact them for a free consultation at two one five
- 26:22Speaker 3: eight zero six three six eight nine. That's two one
- 26:25Speaker 3: five eight zero six three six eight nine.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Instead of that, we're going.
- 26:28Speaker 3: To talk about Josh Grizzard, the newly appointed pass game coordinator.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Back in twenty twenty, I want to say I was
- 26:34Speaker 3: at the East West Shrine Bowl in Saint Petersburg, Florida,
- 26:37Speaker 3: and multiple people pointed Josh Garzzard out to me, who
- 26:41Speaker 3: at the time was the Miami Dolphins wide receiver coach.
- 26:44Speaker 3: He was coaching quarterbacks at the Shrine. Boy, I believe,
- 26:47Speaker 3: but they say, keep an eye on this guy. He's
- 26:49Speaker 3: going to be an offensive coordinator in a matter of time,
- 26:52Speaker 3: and he's just thirty six years old. But adding him
- 26:55Speaker 3: onto the staff, I think support Sean Mannion, where you
- 26:58Speaker 3: have someone who has called play before, he's younger, and
- 27:02Speaker 3: he can be sort of a sounding board and they're
- 27:03Speaker 3: going to collaborate. I would imagine and with their vision
- 27:07Speaker 3: of how they can best utilize the talent that they have,
- 27:10Speaker 3: open things up. I think you're going to see a
- 27:11Speaker 3: lot more spacing with the patterns that the receivers have
- 27:14Speaker 3: to run, and there's going to be more emotion.
- 27:17Speaker 2: So I think this is a really good addition.
- 27:19Speaker 3: When Josh Garzzard, he was in the mix for offensive
- 27:23Speaker 3: coordinator for the Eagles, to get both Sean Maddon and
- 27:25Speaker 3: Josh Garzzard, I think that's a home run.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Yeah, And you know, the passing game coordinator gets a
- 27:31Speaker 2: little bit overlooked obviously. You know, in fact, when they
- 27:35Speaker 2: announced they were hiring Josh Gazzard, it took me a
- 27:38Speaker 2: minute or two to think about, now, who was the
- 27:39Speaker 2: passing game coordinator last year? And then it came to
- 27:42Speaker 2: me Parks Frasier. But we never really got a chance
- 27:44Speaker 2: to talk to Parks. You don't know what that collaborative
- 27:47Speaker 2: was between him and Petullo and then of course Nick
- 27:50Speaker 2: Sirianni and then the run game coordinator just down when
- 27:53Speaker 2: you don't know what that whole collaboration was like. But
- 27:56Speaker 2: I think, by the again, you have to credit this search,
- 27:59Speaker 2: the Eagle one on this fifteen day search because they
- 28:02Speaker 2: interviewed Josh Grizzard twice. There were four candidates that came
- 28:05Speaker 2: back for second interviews. Manion was one and Grizzard was
- 28:08Speaker 2: the other, and they ended up getting them both. And
- 28:10Speaker 2: I think there's going to be a pretty good collaboration
- 28:12Speaker 2: between these two guys. Grizzard was the offensive coordinator for
- 28:16Speaker 2: the Bucks last year. He was scapegoaded, I think he was.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I think he was, you know, because he was without
- 28:22Speaker 2: some of the weapons. He didn't have Mike Evans for
- 28:24Speaker 2: a good part of the year. Bucky Irving was hurt,
- 28:27Speaker 2: Tristan Wurf's was hurt. I think the other respinder, egg
- 28:32Speaker 2: Buka Buker was hurt exactly. So I mean, you know,
- 28:35Speaker 2: it's hard when you start losing personnel like that. So,
- 28:39Speaker 2: you know, Grizard, they were great to start the year, right,
- 28:42Speaker 2: I think the Bucks were five and two, six and two.
- 28:44Speaker 2: The Eagles went down there and beat them. Their Bucks
- 28:46Speaker 2: I think were three, you know at the time, and
- 28:47Speaker 2: then they kind of hit the skids when the injury
- 28:49Speaker 2: started to pile up. So you know, he's been in
- 28:51Speaker 2: oc in this league. He's called plays in this league.
- 28:54Speaker 2: You know, that's something that's one knock on manion that
- 28:57Speaker 2: he doesn't have is the play calling ability. But I think,
- 29:00Speaker 2: you know, with those two working together, you know, we'll
- 29:03Speaker 2: see how this offense operates, and I think it's gonna
- 29:06Speaker 2: and I really do believe that it's going to be
- 29:07Speaker 2: a successful offense.
- 29:08Speaker 3: And I should also mention that when Josh Gizzard in
- 29:11Speaker 3: twenty twenty four as the pass game cordinator for the Buccaneers,
- 29:15Speaker 3: he did handle the third down play calling and they
- 29:17Speaker 3: were very efficient in that area. So I'm really interested
- 29:20Speaker 3: to see what that collaborative approach looks like between those two.
- 29:23Speaker 3: And I can't wait to speak to both of those
- 29:25Speaker 3: guys because they're gonna have their fingerprints all over this offense,
- 29:28Speaker 3: and I imagine that you're going to see a much
- 29:30Speaker 3: more modernized version of the offense that many of you
- 29:34Speaker 3: had all been clamoring for.
