Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21Happy Wednesday. I have three stories for you
- 0:24guys today, so let's just get right into it.
- 0:28Oh, before I start, please rate, review and subscribe.
- 0:30We are trying to get our Spotify star reviews app, so please rate
- 0:34US on Spotify. You just have to hit the little
- 0:37star. Or you can leave us a review on
- 0:38Apple or you can subscribe to us on YouTube, please.
- 0:44OK, so the first story that I have for you guys is Halo
- 0:48Beauty. It seems to be relaunching
- 0:51without Tati Westbrook and venturing into makeup.
- 0:56This is literally so cursed. OK, so now that Tati Westbrook
- 1:00is officially out of Halo Beauty, it seems that her former
- 1:04business partner Clark Swanson is officially trying to relaunch
- 1:08the brand with makeup. And honestly, this looks so
- 1:11shit. Now I want to clarify that it's
- 1:14not totally clear if Clark still owns Hello Beauty, but it is
- 1:19presumed so. So we're going to like go with
- 1:21that. It seems like in their legal
- 1:23battle, Tati was allowed to keep her name as in like she can sell
- 1:27her makeup or like beauty, whatever products under Tati
- 1:31Beauty. That's what it seemed like at
- 1:32least from her video about like the lawsuit being done.
- 1:36And I guess it seems like Clark got to keep Halo Beauty.
- 1:41So I actually did a deep dive into Tati's legal struggles over
- 1:44the last few years right before I went to Europe when I was like
- 1:47doing my cottage core episodes at my parents cottage in Canada.
- 1:52I think it was like August or September.
- 1:54So if you want a full breakdown, go listen to that.
- 1:57But very high level. She was in this like back and
- 1:59forth legal drama with her Halo Beauty business partner, Clark
- 2:02Swanson for years. Tati and her husband claimed
- 2:06they claimed a lot of things, But among the things, they
- 2:08claimed that he misrepresented how much money he could invest.
- 2:13They thought he maybe had like a secret investor that they didn't
- 2:17know about who was like giving him the money to then put into
- 2:20Halo Beauty. And they said he just like
- 2:22didn't do the work that he said he would.
- 2:25He didn't seem to actually have the connections that he claimed
- 2:28to have. And then Clark said that Tati
- 2:31again, he said a million things apparently, and it was like
- 2:33years and years, which is why I like partly why Tati said she
- 2:36had to scale back from posting because she's like, I would post
- 2:40and then I would get a legal letter like right away.
- 2:43So among the things that he was claiming about Tati and her
- 2:46husband, he said that Tati launching Tati Beauty, which was
- 2:50like her makeup brands, right? So like Halo Beauty was the
- 2:52vitamins, the infamous vitamins and then Tati beauty was her
- 2:56makeup line. He said that her launching Tati
- 2:58beauty was a breach of their agreement.
- 3:01He said she leveraged her clique, quote UN quote of beauty
- 3:05influencer friends to get more equity in Halo beauty at one
- 3:08point. And part of this exchange was
- 3:10that Clark claimed Tati promised to launch any other brands that
- 3:14were in that kind of like beauty Wellness health space under the
- 3:17Halo beauty umbrella. So when she launched Tati Beauty
- 3:21as a completely separate brand with out Clark Swanson and not
- 3:25under the Halo beauty umbrella, that was like a breach of you
- 3:28know, their agreement. So recently it taught you down
- 3:31that her legal battles were done and she could use her name
- 3:34again, like I said in product development or branding I guess,
- 3:37and that she was officially out of Halo Beauty.
- 3:40So now Halo Beauty started like posting that they were coming
- 3:43back around 4 weeks ago. But the post that has really
- 3:46taken off was from yesterday because the stuff that they were
- 3:50posting before was like very generic.
- 3:52It seemed like, OK, this is like, you know, they're a
- 3:53vitamin brand. It seemed in line with Wellness
- 3:56and vitamins, whatever. But what they posted yesterday
- 3:59was a photo of a woman. Honestly, it looks AI generated,
- 4:04but a photo of a woman on her side looking at a bunch of
- 4:08lipsticks, like a row of lipsticks in front of her.
- 4:10And they're like coming soon. So everyone's like, OK, so Halo
- 4:13Beauty is trying to launch cosmetics.
- 4:16This photo, like I said, you guys, is so shoddy.
- 4:20It looks like 2 stock images posted like superimposed on top
- 4:25of each other. Like it's literally like a stock
- 4:27image of a woman and then a stock image of like a row of
- 4:30lipsticks. That's what it looks like.
- 4:32OK, so this is what the caption says.
- 4:34A new chapter for Halo Beauty. We're thrilled to announce that
- 4:38Halo Beauty is entering a new beautiful phase, guided by a
- 4:43female owned brand that shares our passion for clean, ethical
- 4:48and high performance beauty. What's new?
- 4:51Pure plant based ingredients free from harsh chemicals,
- 4:55meticulously tested by beauty pros and real users.
- 4:58A steadfast commitment to ego conscious practices and quality.
- 5:03Stay tuned, this is just the beginning.
- 5:05OK, so first of all, what the hell does guided by a female
- 5:13owned brand mean? Because they're obviously not a
- 5:16female owned brand, but I guess they're trying to like ride that
- 5:20wave. I guess they're trying to like
- 5:22get those brownie points. But because they're not, they're
- 5:25presumably owned by Clark Swanson, this random white man.
- 5:29I guess they're trying to say like, oh, look at us like we're
- 5:32trying to be inclusive, like we're female guided.
- 5:36I don't under, I don't know. So people have been commenting
- 5:39being like, what does that mean? What brand is guiding you?
- 5:42Like what woman? What, what does that mean?
- 5:45Like actually just like, what does that mean?
- 5:47And apparently they are blocking and deleting those comments.
- 5:51So they're blocking users that are commenting that and then
- 5:53they're deleting those comments. It looks like it's going to be a
- 5:56private label nightmare. And I'm actually excited to see
- 6:01how all of this unfolds. If this is owned by Clark
- 6:04Swanson, a lot of people feel like like a lot of Tati's fans
- 6:08feel like he stole this brand from her.
- 6:10And I kind of agree. Like we don't really know.
- 6:13Obviously, the like of the settlement, like how it all kind
- 6:16of came out in the wash. So I don't necessarily want to
- 6:19like make that claim. But like it does seem like he
- 6:21fought her for this. And unfortunately, he ended up
- 6:24walking away with Halo Beauty, which was like her first brand
- 6:27baby. So I'm excited to see how this
- 6:30goes because I don't think it's going to go very well.
- 6:32OK, The next story that I have for you guys is that Tana Mojo
- 6:35and Trisha have revealed what their joint podcast is going to
- 6:39be. I can't remember if we talked
- 6:41about this on mini scroll. I think we did.
- 6:44But basically last week Tricia and Tana teased that they were
- 6:47starting a podcast together very soon.
- 6:50They wouldn't share with the topic would be, but they made it
- 6:52clear that they weren't going to make pop culture the main focus.
- 6:56They didn't want to impede on what both of them already have.
- 6:59Tana with canceled and Trish with just Trish.
- 7:03But yesterday, Tricia posted on her Instagram story with a phone
- 7:06number where fans could quote, call and ask us your questions
- 7:10about love and dating. And the graphic in the Instagram
- 7:13story reads not love line. So I don't know, maybe that will
- 7:17be their podcast name with a phone number.
- 7:19And then it says call Trish and Tana today.
- 7:22So I guess we're going to be getting like a love and dating
- 7:25pod from them. I mean, I'd be very interested
- 7:28in a podcast from them about their dating experiences.
- 7:31But like stories like chronicling that history would
- 7:34be so interesting because Trisha did so much of that in her early
- 7:38content, you know, like all of her kind of vlogs and like
- 7:42sitting on the kitchen floor, all of her exposes on the men
- 7:46that hurt her. Like that was so iconic from
- 7:49Trish. And I actually would love to
- 7:51hear the true stories like now that she has some distance from
- 7:53it, like if the stories behind all of these relationships.
- 7:57But I, I don't think that's what it's going to be.
- 7:59I think it'll probably be more especially with the phone number
- 8:01thing, a bit more like advice and stuff.
- 8:03And I understand they don't want to put people on blast, but
- 8:05like, that's the podcast that I want from them is like a
- 8:09chronicle of their dating history.
- 8:12OK. And the last story that I have
- 8:13for you guys is I wanted to talk about Gen.
- 8:16Z top apps that were downloaded of the year because the top one,
- 8:21I think, is so, so interesting. So TechCrunch just published
- 8:24this piece where they basically worked with a research firm to
- 8:27kind of best understand the apps that young people are using.
- 8:31Now, the data for this article was limited to the US, so it's
- 8:34not fully representative, but I think it's still interesting to
- 8:38consider. So they say based on data from
- 8:41iOS and Android users in the US, the most downloaded app from
- 8:45January to October of this year was Timo with young Gen.
- 8:50Z adults downloading the app 41.98 million times.
- 8:55Basically 42,000,000 times that is.
- 8:58That is so wild to me. I don't know if it's just
- 9:01because I live in Australia and I feel like Chimu is just like
- 9:05not that popular here. I mean I don't know, maybe it
- 9:08is. I've never even like been on the
- 9:10website, let alone downloaded their app, but that is like
- 9:14shocking to me. And I think what's really
- 9:16interesting is obviously this is in stark contrast to Gen.
- 9:20Zed's commitment to sustainability, climate action,
- 9:23a lot of these kind of morals that we feel like they or that
- 9:27like they do statistically uphold compared to previous
- 9:30generations. But I think two things at the
- 9:32end of the day, you know, Gen. Zed is still very young.
- 9:35Most of them would be an entry level jobs like they can't
- 9:37afford. I mean, stuff is so expensive.
- 9:40Like literally stuff is so expensive.
- 9:42Most of them probably probably can't afford to buy anything
- 9:45that's not fast fashion, unfortunately, Like, people can
- 9:47barely afford groceries right now.
- 9:50So I think shopping for discount clothing and other items like
- 9:53that makes sense. And I also think, you know, as
- 9:56much as young people care about the environment and I think this
- 9:59will change, but you know, for now, it seems like at least they
- 10:02care more about fitting in and having the latest, you know,
- 10:06micro trend more. And I think that makes sense
- 10:09when you consider that, well, TikTok was the number two
- 10:12downloaded app. And it's also, of course, one of
- 10:14the apps that young people, I mean all of us, but young people
- 10:18especially are using the most frequently.
- 10:20Like the micro trend life cycle is so fast now, way faster than
- 10:27even when I was, you know, in my late teens, early 20s Way, way
- 10:30faster. If you're constantly exposed to
- 10:33that level of consumerism, you know, that fast-paced trend
- 10:38cycle, you don't want to get left behind.
- 10:40I wouldn't want to get left behind.
- 10:42I get it. OK, so like I said, TikTok was
- 10:44in 2nd place. Other notable apps high on the
- 10:47list where YouTube, Cap cut, Metis family of apps, ChatGPT,
- 10:53Snapchat, Reddit, Pinterest, Netflix and this one shocked me.
- 10:59Lemonade. I actually wrote an entire
- 11:02article about how Lemonade was going to flop like two years
- 11:06ago. For anyone that doesn't know,
- 11:07lemonade is kind of like bite dances version of Pinterest I
- 11:12guess. But yeah, I guess it's doing OK.
- 11:14Anyways, I thought that was really interesting and I know, I
- 11:17know I say this all the time, but I know a lot of you guys
- 11:19work in social and marketing, so I thought those little tidbits
- 11:23could be helpful for you. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 11:26Mini Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 11:29Please rate review and subscribe.
- 11:31Please star rate US on Spotify. Like I said, we're trying to get
- 11:34our ratings up there. I love you guys and I will talk
- 11:36to you tomorrow. Bye.
