- 1:04the way it falls this year, but since people be less likely to download,
- 1:08decided to go ahead and start today. So here from December twenty fifth
- 1:12of nineteen forty three is Nick Hard's Christmas Adventure. Yes, it's another case
- 1:27for that most famous of all manhunters, the detective was ability of solving crime
- 1:33is unequaled in the history of detective fiction. Nick Cutter, Master Detective,
- 1:38The Night's Curious Adventure, a special Christmas story Nick Cutter Christmas Adventure or the
- 1:45Mystery of the Reluctant Contributor. Well, next, we've been pretty much more
- 2:01haven't we ask Covey? We had, which is another way of saying that
- 2:05folks are usually willing to contribute to your settlement house Christmas party every year.
- 2:07Nick, Now, what's Coovey? I was just thinking about this last name
- 2:10on elis Yeah, Rasper. I don't know him personally, you no,
- 2:14I don't, but somebody must have thought he was rich enough or interested enough
- 2:17in the work to make a substantial contribution. Oh here's the hey. Is
- 2:22this hey? Nick? What's that address again? Five seventy six Milton Avenue.
- 2:25Yes, that's right, and there's his name on the door. Play
- 2:30a let's take a look, scubby. Well, gosh, this doesn't make
- 2:32sense, Dick, A guy who still doesn't hide away at a place like
- 2:35this. Well, knock on the door anyhow, doesn't seem to be anybody
- 2:44here, nol coy, I hear someone coming? Who is it? I'm
- 2:49Nicholas Cotter. I speak to mister Rasper, please, Nick Carter? Yes,
- 2:53yes, and this is my assistant Scuvey Wilson. How you doing you,
- 2:57mister Rasper? Yes, well, come in, come in. It's
- 2:59cold there, letting all the heat out home. Take your pardon, I'm
- 3:02in, Nick, I mean. Oh I wasn't you wanted? Oh,
- 3:06mister Rasper, I have come to see if you would care to make a
- 3:07contribution to my Christmas party. I never made contributions. Ah, but you
- 3:12don't let nick finish, sir. The fund provides food and extra clothing for
- 3:15the needy of deserving. The show department is still working, isn't it Well,
- 3:17of course, mister Rasper. But my object is to provide an inspiration
- 3:21for the young people who are under privilege. People who haven't got any money
- 3:23are always trying to get it from those who have. Then you aren't interested
- 3:28in seeing that the children of the Lincoln Hall district helped to a little happiness
- 3:30on Christmas Day? Oh I'm not. Christmas is old fashioned. I don't
- 3:35believe in it. It's a waste of money and time. Good day.
- 3:38Oh well, mister Rasper. It's always been a lot of fun for me
- 3:40personally. But I must say that I've always felt better for celebrating, and
- 3:44I haven't glad to agree with scuby. Mister Rasper. Christmas has always been
- 3:46a bright spot in my life, and I feel sure that if you knew
- 3:50the good it has done throughout the world, it make you change your mind,
- 3:53Robbie. Well, in any case, I married Christmas to you.
- 3:57Good dave you Christmas and needs a lot of nuns. And come on,
- 4:02Nick, let's get back to civilization. You know, Scubby, that man's
- 4:05wealthy, no doubt about that, and yet he's solid on Christmas and everything
- 4:11it stands for. You said our mouthful Nick. You know Scopy there must
- 4:14be reason why he thinks that way, and I'd like to find out what
- 4:16it is. But you having anything to work on, Nick, know Skeby,
- 4:19I haven't not yet, But look here, I can finish up whatever
- 4:23has to be done this afternoon. Suppose you hop down to the newspaper office
- 4:25and go through the files there. There might just be something we could learn
- 4:28about Rasper that way, Okay, Nick, I'll be glad to Then I'll
- 4:30have Raleigh check through the files at headquarters. It's a long shot, but
- 4:33something might turn up. Sure. Maybe Patsy is run into something while she's
- 4:36been working out at the settlement house. She might know somebody who knows something
- 4:40about Rasbord. Yeah, she matter that. I'll ask her about it,
- 4:42okay, And maybe with all of us working together on it, we may
- 4:45learn why Raspor's or dead set against Christmas. I'd certainly like to find out.
- 5:00Hello, he's that Tunick Riley talking. I've been through my files here
- 5:03and I can't find anything charged against the man named Ben Rasper. He was
- 5:08licensed to do business with a man named Howard Low, but Low died some
- 5:11years ago. Otherwise, Rasper is just a successful businessman. That's right.
- 5:15Uh. I'll tell you what though, Nick, there's an old fellow named
- 5:18Fred Anderson who used to be on the force who knows Rasper for sure.
- 5:23You can find him at Lincoln Hall where you're giving the party. No,
- 5:27he's the watchman there now. Waka Nick, that's all right, I'll see
- 5:30you tomorrow. Hello. Oh yes, Covey. Oh you did? Uh?
- 5:46Sportsal Morah? Well? Well what was that name again, Chris Bam?
- 5:50Why yes, yes, I recall. Oh no, I'll be down
- 5:54about an hour. So I want to call pats first, right, and
- 5:57thanks Guvey bye. Jingle bells, jingle bell Hy Patsy, how's everything?
- 6:13Huh ah? Fine, I'm coming down to the hall. Is there anything
- 6:15you want me to bring along? H are sure I can do that?
- 6:20But will that be enough? Though? Okay, yeah, yes it could
- 6:25be just called or we've found out something about Rasper what you did too?
- 6:31How old is he named Jimmy? And he's coming to our party? Oh
- 6:35fine, fine, Patsy, Okay, I'll seen it a little while.
- 6:38Bye, that's fine. We've collected enough to do Visia his party up right.
- 6:54Now, let's get organized, Ronnie. Your job of me to get
- 6:57the kids of the needy person's round about. Surely come take care of it.
- 7:00I got your lists in the list from the social worker from the church
- 7:02down there, and there are plenty of others who need to lift this year.
- 7:05Believe me, I know it, Riley, and I'll depend on you,
- 7:09Scabby. It's your job to see that the tree and decorations and gifts
- 7:12are taken care of. Don't worry, Nick, decorating's my middle name.
- 7:15I'll make Lincoln Hall look like a million dollars in cat a. Good boy,
- 7:18good boy, And Patsy, you see to it that there's plenty to
- 7:21eat and drink for the party, so I won't have to worry about that.
- 7:25I'll take care of the bills. And you have the letters of credit
- 7:27the stores gave us. You know how to do that, dear thing.
- 7:29Nick, I've been through with you walking that after before I ought to know
- 7:31what you want by this time, Well, what are you going to be
- 7:33doing? Nick? Me? Well, Riley, I'm gonna do a little
- 7:36detecting. I'm going to look into those tips you Patsy and Scobby gave me
- 7:40about those people who know Ben Rasper. And by the time I'm through,
- 7:44I hope to find out why it is that he hates Christmas the way he
- 7:46does. Then well then maybe I'll be able to do something about it.
- 7:53Oh yes, is it right for talking? Yes, I sent you the
- 8:11Belding knife. Well, whatever it is doing the twenty seventh, No,
- 8:16just forget it. The holidays don't tell the reason for bells to be unpaid.
- 8:20Goodbye, fool nonsense, That's what it is. There's a lot of
- 8:24fools talking big. Ain't your Rasper? Who's what do you want? Don't
- 8:28you remember me? Rasper? No? I don't remember you. Whuaia.
- 8:33He used to call me the kid Chris, the kid Chris sometimes known as
- 8:37the human flesh Chris. You. Oh, well, it's been a long
- 8:43time, Raspa, isn't it. How'd you find me? Who sent you
- 8:46here? Fellow named Nick Carter told me I'd find you here in your office,
- 8:50even if it is Christmas Eve, Nick Cutter, Oh yes, I
- 8:54want. I'm going to give him some money for some fool party or for
- 8:58the party at Lincoln Harley. I guess Heyce never asked me for anything,
- 9:03just gave me what I needed when I needed it. So he hired you
- 9:07to come here and take up my time again. He didn't send me here.
- 9:09This said I'd find you here. That's all. I came here on
- 9:13my own accord, just to wish you merry Christmas. Thought should say that.
- 9:18Well, I don't mind, because it's on a count of Nick Kara
- 9:22that I can stand on my own feet again, not on account of you.
- 9:26Watch that you mind if I sit down? It was on Christmas Eve
- 9:33that we won our first fight, wasn't it? Fight? Oh yeah,
- 9:35A long time ago. It was a long time ago. I can remember
- 9:39the noise of the crowd, the glare of the lights, and the smoke
- 9:41curling around, and the brightness over the ring, and you leaning over me
- 9:45with that wet towel. You gotta going, Chris, another one like that
- 9:50last round and you'll have him in the Rope's got a count? How do
- 9:52you feel now, kiddy? Come on, kiddy, rest, just let
- 9:56me ask you. I don't have to wait any more. It's me now.
- 10:00You take your orders from me, kid, I'm the brain's here.
- 10:03When you get the single from me, you'll give it to him as you
- 10:05got a boss. Keep me shout a hide, I might. That's amazing.
- 10:16I can take him, take him rest now. There are a lot
- 10:26of those little affairs after that, Rasper, and I always did what I
- 10:30was told. Yes, a good fighter, Chris, good fighter. I
- 10:33made a lot of money for us in those spots, Rasper, A lot
- 10:37of my old age, Chris. I'll the water has gone on lots of
- 10:39bridges since then. Ill, and the percentage you paid me didn't last long
- 10:43either. It went just like that water. But I didn't care much about
- 10:48things like that. The day a friend of mine came and gave me a
- 10:52warning tip and started me thinking, oh, Ken, how do you feel?
- 10:58Cohdo rasp wit thin? I have wanted to talk to you. I've
- 11:01been around. What's up? I got a tip today? She's signing up
- 11:05Timmy. O'Day you're gonna manage him, don't you? That? Never mind?
- 11:09Is it true? That depends depends on what that kid you're getting slow
- 11:15o, day's fresh. He'll be the next chair. If he wins this
- 11:16fight with you tonight, I'm taking him over. If I win tonight,
- 11:20I'm taking a day over. Anyhow, We've been together a long time,
- 11:22kidding. They don't pay to get into too much of a rut. So
- 11:26that's all it means to Is it money to payoff her? What about all
- 11:30the years we've known each other? What about the things we've been proved?
- 11:33Why you don't get yourself all in a sweat, kid, isn't good for
- 11:35you. You'll get your cut anyway. Don't worry. You'll get your cut
- 11:39last time. What I do? Tell me what to do? I can't
- 11:46see him in my eyes. I'll pass up. He's cut me the ribbons.
- 11:52Tell me what to do. That's me. Don't bother me. Kid,
- 11:54here's your own judgment. You're on your own as of now, but
- 11:58grasp for you always. You're on your own, kiddy. I can still
- 12:07see it sitting there in the ring corner, laughing at me. But that
- 12:11was the last thing I saw for a long time. Oh day, sort
- 12:16of that You must have coached him pretty far about my style and then you
- 12:20really cashed in. Well, I haven't got much myself, but I'm still
- 12:26able to wish you merry Christmas, Rasper, although I don't think you'll ever
- 12:30have one of churse I Well, I got some things to do, ras
- 12:33Carter asked me to pick up some things for the party at Lincoln Hall tomorrow.
- 12:37We always have a swell time at Carter's Christmas parties. Too bad you
- 12:41can't enjoy anything like that anymore. Well, as I said before, Rasper,
- 12:46Mary, how can a man work with his mind whirling like a merry
- 13:03go around Christmas Eve? God, it's a fighting excuse for people to go
- 13:09around yelling at each other in the streets, sturbing a man when he wants
- 13:13to get some work done. Oh, I might as well close the office
- 13:16and get some rest. We'll be home by now. If the kid Chris
- 13:20hadn't taken up so much time. Christs for a living now, wonder if
- 13:28that it's none of my concern? Can home and get some sleep? That's
- 13:30what I need? Who's that I'm closing up? Come back tomorrow morning.
- 13:35I'm glad I got here before you left it. Who is it? It's
- 13:39Nina? Then, Oh, Nina, I only stop by to speak to
- 13:43you for a moment. It's getting quite later. Well, sit down for
- 13:46a moment, Nina. Thank you. Let me get your chair. I
- 13:52suppose it's ro had a bowl of me to come after all this time.
- 13:56But I know me know why. I'm I'm glad you did. Is there
- 14:01something you want? No, you know there's nothing you can do for me.
- 14:07Ben, Jimmy and I are doing very nicely. I just wanted to
- 14:09wish you a merry Christmas. I was in the neighborhood doing some shopping for
- 14:13the party that mister Carter's giving it Lincoln Hall tomorrow. And Nina, Jimmy,
- 14:18I mean, oh, he's fine, Ben. He's full of life
- 14:22and interested in everything. He has a good head on his shoulder, isn't
- 14:26He's very handsome too. Oh that's fine, just fine. Uh you're looking
- 14:31a little tired, Ben, Are you feeling well? Oh? Yes,
- 14:35yes, of course I have been working hard, that's all. I don't
- 14:39spend much time at home much reason to him, m that's the way you
- 14:45want it, Ben, don't you remember Nana wreat Oh, Jimmy, there's
- 14:54daddy. You're waiting here for Mommy like a good boy, won't you.
- 14:58I'm coming, Ben, I've been giving your dinner warm for you. I
- 15:01hope you'll what's anoa? Then you look as if there's nothing, Nina,
- 15:05nothing, I'm in a hurry, that's all. You're always in a hurry,
- 15:07Aren't you never have time for where's dinner? Then I'll I'll have it
- 15:15for you right away. This plate is half now, be careful you don't
- 15:20bring me I won't salt. Please who you are? Dear? Then when
- 15:28you've finished, won't you take time enough out of your business to help me
- 15:31get the tree decorated. I know Jimmy's too young to know much about it,
- 15:35but I'd love to have these Christmas already for him in the morning.
- 15:39Look, I'm putting to sleep right away and then we can start. Seeah,
- 15:41I have some holly and missles over the fireplace and enter. I won't
- 15:46wait. But then it's Christmas Eve. Surely you have to get back to
- 15:52the office. I'm putting on a championship match for a day in January,
- 15:56and the things are gone haywire. Something that can't wait till tomorrow. I
- 16:00have to get it organized right away, That's all, Ben. This is
- 16:03Christmas Eve tomorrow will be Jimmy's first Christmas. Doesn't that mean anything to you?
- 16:10You and Jimmy celebrate Christmas anyway you want do, Nina, I have
- 16:14something more important to do. Business is more important than sentiment. Who certainly
- 16:19can see that? Yes, Ben, I can see that. I've been
- 16:26seeing it more and more during the last few years. I thought that when
- 16:30Jimmy came, maybe you will. No. I was wrong, wasn't i?
- 16:36Ben. You'd even let your love for business break up, our home
- 16:41break up our Don't be melodramatic, Nina. Not being melodramatic, Ben,
- 16:45I'm I'm trying to be very calm and quiet about it. I've had a
- 16:49lot of time to think when I've sat alone here night after night, and
- 16:53those days on end, when you've been away attending to your business, And
- 16:56what has come out of all this thinking? You've done just this, Ben,
- 17:02I'm not going on any longer. Either you belong to your family or
- 17:07your family will get along without you. I have to rush. Good night,
- 17:11God, good night, Ben, it's good goodbye. Jimmy and I
- 17:15are leaving tonight. Look, I haven't time to talk about it with you
- 17:18now. Oh, by the way. This will probably take most of the
- 17:22night. Good Night, goodbye, Ben, Verry Christmas. I never had
- 17:37much of a chance to make it up to you, Mina. You've had
- 17:41all the chance you wanted, Ben, But I just drop by to say
- 17:45hello and to give you a wish for happiness during the holidays. It's hard
- 17:51not to share with you the joy I have with Jimmy. I wish you
- 17:55could see his eyes dancing mister Carter's Christmas parties. Unfortunately, what little I
- 18:00make, we can't very well afford to have our Christmas at home, but
- 18:03somehow we don't miss it. Everybody has such a grand time at mister Carter's
- 18:07party, and Jimmy does enjoy every minute that he's there. Godness, I'll
- 18:12have to be on my way, jim He's waiting for me, and I
- 18:15have to make one more stop for mister Carter. Good Night, Ben,
- 18:18and Merry Christmas. This stuff doesn't taste like anything, nothing at all.
- 18:34I can't understand what's got into me. It's good food, fixed the same
- 18:38as always is. He just doesn't taste right, that's all. What's It's
- 18:45someone at the door of this time of the night. I'm coming. I'm
- 18:48coming. Oh, Ben, it's fit Anderson. Let up, I'll get
- 18:56home. I'm over at home this time of night. Yessues, I pull
- 18:59shop, Ben, are gonna come? In course? I brought your package,
- 19:03Ben. Nick Carter sent me around with it, said you'd probably be
- 19:07here alone tomorrow and he'd like you to have it. Carter what Carter sending
- 19:11me? You might open it and see? Ben, I'm no mind reader.
- 19:15It's any reason why Carter had wanted m h what wine? And see
- 19:22the card? May Christmas from Nick Carter. Let's say, idea, you
- 19:27know anything about this friend? No? But Nick Carter's a funny duck.
- 19:32There's lots of things people don't expect him to why. I don't even know
- 19:34the man only saw him once. And then you want the glass of this
- 19:41wine? Friend? Don't mind if I do, Ben, change it's Christmas
- 19:45Eve. I don't mind at all. And there's some glasses here somewhere.
- 19:48Say hurry open this thing. I'll do it for you. Ben. Go
- 19:56ahead, you open it? Eh? Oh, all right, there ain't
- 20:03a drinking with me, Ben? Huh, oh I will that's a ticket.
- 20:10Well, here's very Christmas for you, Ben, Yes, very Christmas.
- 20:17Oh have you been giving yourself. Friend. Oh, I've been sort
- 20:19of walking around Lincoln Hall since I was retired from the force. See,
- 20:23you know, while I was coming here tonight, I was thinking about those
- 20:27old days when I walked a beat twenty. Most folks call them the good
- 20:32old days, but I don't. You did all right in those times,
- 20:33and oh, sure I got along. I was just thinking about the different
- 20:37attitudes folks have nowadays thought being given a hand, they appreciate it more.
- 20:42It seems to entirely still charity for it. That hasn't changed. I guess
- 20:47it's all in the point of view. Ben, I guess you haven't changed
- 20:51with the times. That night I mentioned near the bridge, I was sure
- 20:55you were going to see that you were headed in the wrong direction and wake
- 20:57up in time. Remember that night, being which Christmas Eve you just come
- 21:03from the arena. They'd handed you your walking papers because you let them down.
- 21:11Very Christmas, officer, Very Christmas to you, sir. Well what
- 21:18you doing out on a night like this? Ben? I thought you'd be
- 21:21able at the arena get into New Year's fights, lined coch you Anderson.
- 21:25Now I'm not of the arena anymore. That's so what happened. They decided
- 21:30tonight that'd rather have Davis take over my job. Fine, Christmas present bat
- 21:33is, Well that's tuck you, Ben. What's gonna do now? I
- 21:37don't know. I can't seem to think straight. Oh that's a crazy way
- 21:41for a man like you to talk on the Christmas Eve to Christmas Eve.
- 21:47That's never been anything but that jinks to me. First, I get stuck
- 21:49with that, no good fight or oday. Then Nina leaves me and takes
- 21:52my son with it, and now Arena throws me out. Well, maybe
- 21:56you better stop and find out what it is you're doing wrong, Ben,
- 22:00Maybe you're the one that's to blame, not Christmas Eve. They all take
- 22:03advantage of me. I made all the money I could for them, but
- 22:07I'm not gonna do it anymore. Take it easy, man, take it
- 22:10easy. You better go home and think it over. I have thought it
- 22:12over, Fred, and I know what the answer is. I'm gonna make
- 22:15money for myself and nobody else. I'll show these people I don't make so
- 22:19much money. They'll come crawling to me on their knees, and I won't
- 22:22have to ask for anybody's sympathy. You don't pay to think like that,
- 22:26then you regret it. Now. Look, I know the pillboint and who
- 22:30runs the shoe store down on Ellam Street. He is looking for a man
- 22:33to buy in with him. Me working a shoe store. Not on your
- 22:37life, Fred, I'm going after the big money. Big money. That's
- 22:41the only thing people understand, and I'm gonna get it. Now. You've
- 22:45got it, Ben, one of the richest men in town. And once
- 22:48he got you, why, I don't know. Ben. It's too bad
- 22:55you don't get around and see what nice people are in the world. People
- 22:59like this card if, for instance, does a man good to know people
- 23:03like him makes you feel? Really is a Santa Claus? To see him
- 23:07bring the smiles in the kids' faces those parties he gives down at Lincoln Hall.
- 23:12Well, I'll be getting back then, and I've got a big day
- 23:15tomorrow. I've not as young as he used to be her Christmas, do
- 23:21you, Ben, I'll tell Nina I saw you. She'll be at the
- 23:23party tomorrow with young Jimmy. Good night, man. Ah, Pay everybody
- 23:38quiet now, I'm right over art not you'll light up along the wall over
- 23:45there and watch it out here by the tree. If he O. While
- 23:48he has her gifts there you go out of the table. There gets a
- 23:52request, Come on, I'll light up flat there fat the ticket down?
- 23:56Watch it out here? Come on your time? O. Well, Pantcy,
- 24:06how's it going? Making wonderfu a grand time? Paul? That's flying
- 24:10Pancy's Patsy. And look over there by the door. What do you see,
- 24:14Renie? Who's that's Patsy? Is Ben Resby? I hope he's come
- 24:19to join the party. Thanks, that's the man I've heard so much about.
- 24:25She look scared. He's Patsy. You want to make him welcome?
- 24:33Hello, then, Merry Christmas. I'm Patty Gowen you join us? How
- 24:37do you doing? I hope I'm not? Do you mind if how he
- 24:41just watch? Oh christ come right in. I wanted to thank mister Carter
- 24:45for the gifts you send them by Nick right over there near the tree.
- 24:48Come along, Uh huh. Children seem to be enjoying themselves. I'm glad
- 24:53they Didney do. That's Attendant's Alley handing out the gifts. There. It's
- 24:57ktably welcome with him. Yes, I met mister Wilson. He's living Lieutenant
- 25:03Riley. He's having as much fun as the children. So I see,
- 25:07Oh, I think there's a nice looking boy there, miss who I mean,
- 25:11what's his name? Where there's that one over there? Oh that's Jimmy.
- 25:15He's a night boy. If though there was a big jap to me
- 25:18getting a refreshments ready this year is over there on the five out of the
- 25:22hall at the table. See oh, yes, personal, I mean we
- 25:27have no guest. Oh oh, I'm miss harassmer Mary Christmas. I'm glad
- 25:30to get joints. Thank you, mister Carter. I came to express my
- 25:34appreciation with the gift you sent me. I hardly know how having Ols Rasper
- 25:38you're being here. Thanks enough for me, mister Carter. That little boy
- 25:41coming along the line there, Jimmy, I think his name is. Do
- 25:45you think I might give him? I mean, could I him in his
- 25:48gift? Do you think? Quite certainly? Riley, mister Rasper, he
- 25:53wants a leven head? Can you use him for sure? Seeing me come
- 25:56along, mister thank you you just hand to meet you said, they come
- 26:02along, mister Raisberd and enjoy your health man. I will there little gel
- 26:07and Merry Christmas. She liked it, didn't he? They all appreciate the
- 26:15little kindness mister Asmund. Now here's a gift for that to to buy there.
- 26:19Oh hello, Jimmy, he and the merry Christmas. So oh well,
- 26:44that was the day for you. Gosh, I haven't had so much
- 26:47fun since last year. You played those games harder than any two kids in
- 26:49the bench coming. Yeah, lots practically. Yeah. Why do you really
- 26:55have to be in condition to keep up with these kids? Boy? They're
- 26:57wonders. They wanted to get all that energy. That will be one of
- 27:00the world's great mysteries for abascuby, Nick, What are you thinking so hard
- 27:04about? Oh? I was. I was just thinking of the way mister
- 27:07Rasper took to the party. Hey, don't you mean the way the party
- 27:10took to mister Rasper? Nick? Yeah, I never saw a man open
- 27:12up. Boy he did. I was wonderful. The children just walked around
- 27:15him. That's one of the greatest jobs that Nick Connor ever did. What
- 27:19do you mean, rileygh Well, Patsy, You'll never believe it. But
- 27:22when Nick and I went to see Rasper to get a contribution to the party,
- 27:26he was the hardest case of unadultivated unpleasantness I ever saw. What.
- 27:30Somehow Nick managed to get under his skin and bring out well what she saw
- 27:34to night. Well, for Heaven's sake, how did you do it?
- 27:37Well? It wasn't difficult, Patsy. You see, I could see when
- 27:40we first spoke to Rasper that he was fighting something, but I didn't know
- 27:42what it was. But mc riley, Scubby and you had told me.
- 27:45I found that three different times Christmas Eve had brought him bad luck. First
- 27:49the fighter o day, Then Missus Rasper had left Rasper and a Christmas Eve,
- 27:55taking his son Jimmy with her. And third he'd lost his promoter's connection
- 27:59at the arena also on Christmas Eve. Well, the whole thing added up.
- 28:03Rasper associated Christmas Eve with a list of unfortunate incidents and bought anything that
- 28:07suggested the holidays to him. He made a lot of money, but it
- 28:11never brought him happiness. The big thing for me was to make him realize
- 28:15that people and Christmas meant good and not evil. And from what I saw
- 28:21this afternoon, the Rasper family in the whole neighborhood for that matter, is
- 28:25going to benefit by his awakening to that realization. I make that wonderful.
- 28:29You did have a kid for that. Oh thanks, Massy, I'm glad
- 28:32you feel that way too. You know, I'm happier this evening because of
- 28:34mister Rasper than I would be if I'd solved twenty murders. He's made this
- 28:40a really merry Christmas for all of us. This has been another of the
- 29:04Strange adventures of Nick Carter, Master Detective, which are brought to you regularly
- 29:10at this time by w or R Mutual. What's your story going to be
- 29:14about next time? Nick? It's a little different from the usual story because
- 29:17it started out with Nick himself being the victim of a holder. Yes,
- 29:21and the men who held me up turned out to be innocent after all.
- 29:22Sound a trifle complicated to me. It was complicated but interesting, and it
- 29:27gave me plenty of trouble before I found the solution, including a sore felt
- 29:30that almost finished Nick Carter a saw throat. Why should that be dangerous because
- 29:36it was the kind that you get from a rope around your neck? Hey,
- 29:38wait a minute, you mean, well, the rest of the story
- 29:41you get two weeks from tonight. That's now so long, everybody, so
- 29:45long, So long, both of you in the strange adventure you have just
- 29:49heard. Nick Carter was impersonated by Lon Clark, Patsy by Helen Choult,
- 29:53and Scubby by John Kin. The story was written for Nick Carter by Humphrey
- 29:57Davis. A rich music was played by Lou White. The entire production was
- 30:03under the direction of Jack McGregor. Two weeks from the Night at the same
- 30:21time, listen to another curious experience of Nick Carter entitled Recall Disguise, Arnick
- 30:27Carter and the Mystery of the Kidnap Harris. This story is a copyrighted feature
- 30:38of Street and Smith Publications Incorporated. The Return of Nick Carter is produced in
- 30:42the studios of WR and is broadcast over most of these stations Monday evenings at
- 30:48nine thirty Eastern wartime. This is mutual welcome back. Well, a fairly
- 30:55interesting take on the Christmas Carol, definitely a bit atypical for Nick Carter episode,
- 31:00but definitely a message about remembering what really matters in life. Which character
- 31:07had sacrificed for money, which is never a good trade. Well. Our
- 31:12Christmas specials will continue Tomorrow Saturday Sunday with a special one hour episode you won't
- 31:18want to miss, and then wrap up on Monday with an episode of The
- 31:22Saint In the meantime. If you do have a comment, senator to Box
