- 0:02Speaker 1: Noah Hyles joining us right now. You can hear him
- 0:05Speaker 1: on Bucco Territory. I'm wearing the shirt. I love the
- 0:08Speaker 1: logo Buco Territory shop dot com. Also sports enterprise reporter
- 0:13Speaker 1: and columnist for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Noah, great to have you on.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Let's go to that Marcelo Zuna signing for the Pirates,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and I want you to open everyone's eyes to your
- 0:22Speaker 1: column and why it's nice to see this move, but
- 0:26Speaker 1: it is also a product of perhaps a mismanaged off
- 0:30Speaker 1: season in terms of who they targeted.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Yeah, and I wouldn't even say it's a mismanaged off season.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I think it more just highlights the realities of the
- 0:40Speaker 3: Pirates offseason. Had they operated this way in past off seasons,
- 0:45Speaker 3: they wouldn't have been used for leverage by every free
- 0:49Speaker 3: agent they essentially tried to acquire this offseason. And because
- 0:53Speaker 3: that happened, because the likes of Kyle Schwarber, Josh Naylor,
- 0:59Speaker 3: Gino frown berval Dez, you go on and on just said, Okay,
- 1:04Speaker 3: Pirates are interested in anybody else, and then they chose
- 1:07Speaker 3: anybody else. The Pirates had to take what they could
- 1:10Speaker 3: get and what they could get didn't necessarily fit the
- 1:14Speaker 3: needs of their team altogether. Now, their overall need was
- 1:17Speaker 3: to add offense, yes, but after acquiring Lao and O'Hearn
- 1:21Speaker 3: in the same week, those needs became a little bit
- 1:24Speaker 3: more specific. They were getting a little bit of overlap
- 1:28Speaker 3: on that right side of the infield, the right side
- 1:30Speaker 3: of the outfield, and heck, even the designated hitter position.
- 1:33Speaker 3: And when you don't have the credibility of as an
- 1:38Speaker 3: organization to just go out and directly acquire a quality
- 1:44Speaker 3: player at a specific position that meets a specific need,
- 1:47Speaker 3: that's a problem. And I think that's the big story
- 1:50Speaker 3: of the Pirates offseason is they found some decent players,
- 1:53Speaker 3: but they had to take what they could get, and
- 1:57Speaker 3: that's not the best takeaway for an organization. If you're
- 2:01Speaker 3: asking me, I mean, Marcelo Zuna, does he make this
- 2:04Speaker 3: offense better?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Sure?
- 2:05Speaker 3: I mean this team had one player hit twenty home
- 2:08Speaker 3: runs last year. They just added two in the offseason,
- 2:12Speaker 3: plus Ryan O'Hearn who was an All Star designated hitter.
- 2:15Speaker 3: So yes, this offense is better. But when you look
- 2:18Speaker 3: at all of the additions, Now, how does Ozuna's arrival
- 2:23Speaker 3: impact some of the other bats in this lineup, you're
- 2:25Speaker 3: probably going to be asking more from O'Hearn defensively, You're
- 2:29Speaker 3: gonna be asking more from Reynolds probably defensively. And did
- 2:32Speaker 3: those extra asks take away from their offensive output? And
- 2:38Speaker 3: if so, did this team actually get better? I don't
- 2:41Speaker 3: really know. I mean I think on paper, yeah, they
- 2:43Speaker 3: have a better offense. And that's probably the big takeaway
- 2:47Speaker 3: here overall is that they needed slugging percentage and they
- 2:51Speaker 3: went out and got it this offseason. But because of
- 2:54Speaker 3: their organizational reputation and their inability to overpay to erase it,
- 3:00Speaker 3: they had to take what they can get rather than
- 3:02Speaker 3: directly acquiring guys who met their specific needs.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Okay, well then why didn't they know? Why didn't they
- 3:09Speaker 4: go after the guys that fit their needs? You mentioned
- 3:11Speaker 4: Schwarber and you mentioned all the big free agents, right
- 3:14Speaker 4: Gino Swaraz.
- 3:14Speaker 5: We keep saying, oh, they were in on them.
- 3:16Speaker 4: They were in on Schwarber, and they were in on Fromber,
- 3:19Speaker 4: and they were in on this. Were they really in though,
- 3:22Speaker 4: Because if they really wanted these guys, they would go
- 3:24Speaker 4: get them. That's my thing, Like, is it more of Hey,
- 3:27Speaker 4: we didn't get from ber Valdez but we got Marcelo
- 3:30Speaker 4: Zuna to a one year deal. Hey, we didn't get
- 3:33Speaker 4: Kyle Schwarber, but we traded for Brandon Lao right, and
- 3:36Speaker 4: we shined Ryan O'Hearn and these guys or good players
- 3:40Speaker 4: that they got, but they're not what you say, which
- 3:44Speaker 4: is fit the exact needs of the team now they have.
- 3:47Speaker 4: I mean, I'm sorry to say this, but they got
- 3:48Speaker 4: a bunch of dhs that are going to be running
- 3:50Speaker 4: around the outfield in PNC Park, which right field is small,
- 3:53Speaker 4: but left and center are gigantic. So it's gonna be
- 3:57Speaker 4: interesting to see how the defense plays. But also like,
- 4:00Speaker 4: why didn't they just go get the guys in You
- 4:02Speaker 4: pay the extra. I've said this on the show a
- 4:04Speaker 4: million times. You're gonna have to overpay if you're the
- 4:06Speaker 4: Pittsburgh Pirates because teams won't take your serious and they'll
- 4:09Speaker 4: just use your offer to go get the offer they want.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I agree, And I echoed the same thing
- 4:14Speaker 3: on Bucco Territory. I echoed it in my writing. I mean,
- 4:17Speaker 3: that was something that was known from the moment they
- 4:20Speaker 3: went out and said, Hey, we're gonna try to be
- 4:22Speaker 3: different this offseason. We're gonna try to do things differently.
- 4:25Speaker 3: You know, you don't get credit for offering the same
- 4:29Speaker 3: thing everyone else is offering because historically you've been a
- 4:34Speaker 3: worse workplace. You don't normally pay as well, you certainly
- 4:38Speaker 3: don't win as often, and just organizationally, your reputation isn't great.
- 4:42Speaker 3: So in order to overcome that, if you really want
- 4:45Speaker 3: these players, you have to go the extra mile. I
- 4:48Speaker 3: think they probably did go the extra mile on Alhearne,
- 4:51Speaker 3: but I mean the rest of this, I mean, low
- 4:53Speaker 3: didn't have a say they traded for him. He came here.
- 4:57Speaker 3: You know, every other deal they signed was a one
- 4:59Speaker 3: year deal, and in Ozuna's case, I mean, you look,
- 5:03Speaker 3: guys are reporting to spring training this week. Everyone's looking
- 5:06Speaker 3: to you know, finalize a certain situation. I mean, he
- 5:09Speaker 3: checks certain boxes, right. They needed a right handed bat,
- 5:12Speaker 3: they needed an additional slug. But yeah, I agree with you, aj.
- 5:15Speaker 3: I mean, this was an opportunity for them to make
- 5:17Speaker 3: a statement. And even if they did overpay, which again
- 5:20Speaker 3: was super necessary to do, they would have made that
- 5:23Speaker 3: money back. I really do think that, like if fans
- 5:26Speaker 3: saw the organization actually recognize and take accountability for its
- 5:32Speaker 3: situation and say you know what, We've saved so much
- 5:36Speaker 3: money in recent years by not overspending that we can
- 5:39Speaker 3: overspend just this once on a player that is a
- 5:42Speaker 3: direct need both you know, positionally and what he contributes
- 5:46Speaker 3: from value. Fans would have showed up to the ballpark more,
- 5:50Speaker 3: and I still think they will. I still think fans
- 5:51Speaker 3: overall are encouraged by this offseason. But like you mentioned,
- 5:55Speaker 3: I mean, now they have to figure out this weird
- 5:57Speaker 3: puzzle where you're gonna have one of the worst defensive
- 6:02Speaker 3: outfields in baseball, and that's not necessarily a recipe for
- 6:05Speaker 3: success for a team that's built to win through its pitching.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I mean, the strengths of this team heading into the offseason,
- 6:11Speaker 3: we're starting pitching, and I would say overall team defense,
- 6:15Speaker 3: especially in the infield. I think both of those areas
- 6:18Speaker 3: got worse now. The offense got better, but this is
- 6:21Speaker 3: still a team that's going to need to win on
- 6:23Speaker 3: the margins. They're not going to overpower many opponents. They're
- 6:27Speaker 3: not going to win a lot of ten to nine
- 6:29Speaker 3: ball games. And when you're sacrificing defensive runs saved just
- 6:33Speaker 3: to get guys who are going to slug a couple
- 6:36Speaker 3: points above league average. How much better did you really get?
- 6:40Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Hey, sometimes we do a little game on foul Territory
- 6:45Speaker 1: called role play.
- 6:47Speaker 2: It's not what you think.
- 6:48Speaker 1: We're just picking up our phones and we're talking as
- 6:51Speaker 1: if we're somebody in baseball. But if you'd like that
- 6:54Speaker 1: phone to be a little bit cheaper for making phone calls,
- 6:57Speaker 1: who should you call?
- 6:58Speaker 2: Krats?

- 7:43Speaker 5: They still have a little bit of money left for ESOC? Parades.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I didn't think they had this much money left. I
- 7:49Speaker 3: mean honestly, oh, y'all, honestly, I mean, like you look.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And I know this has been brought up everywhere that
- 7:57Speaker 3: this move essentially marks the end for Andrew McCutchen and pits.
- 8:00Speaker 3: The reason I thought McCutcheon made sense was just because
- 8:03Speaker 3: he would give them a little bit more money to spend. Now,
- 8:06Speaker 3: if they have more money to spend, then absolutely go
- 8:09Speaker 3: get parades. I think this team looks a lot better
- 8:12Speaker 3: if you go get a third baseman and a left
- 8:14Speaker 3: handed starting pitcher, you feel a lot better with that roster,
- 8:17Speaker 3: or at least a utility infielder, because right now they
- 8:20Speaker 3: only have one person who knows how to play third base,
- 8:22Speaker 3: Jared Triolo, and he might need to be your opening
- 8:25Speaker 3: day short stuff if Connor Griffin isn't ready. So yeah,
- 8:28Speaker 3: they need to make an addition in the infield. They
- 8:30Speaker 3: probably need to make some pitching additions as well. I
- 8:33Speaker 3: don't see a lot of guys they could really trade
- 8:35Speaker 3: away to clear up money, so that either tells me
- 8:38Speaker 3: they're going to be banking on some you know, minor
- 8:42Speaker 3: league camp invites, or try to find a last second
- 8:46Speaker 3: bargain toward the end of February like they have in
- 8:49Speaker 3: the past, I personally, I mean parades. I know that
- 8:54Speaker 3: they're still reportedly in the mix for him. The name
- 8:57Speaker 3: I've been hearing just from conversations is Vien is the
- 9:00Speaker 3: guy that I think is probably more realistic. I still
- 9:03Speaker 3: don't know how realistic that would be for the Pirates,
- 9:06Speaker 3: but he's certainly more in their financial wheelhouse, and I
- 9:10Speaker 3: think the demand for him would be far less than
- 9:12Speaker 3: pre eighties.
- 9:14Speaker 6: When Andrew McCutcheon made it up to the big leagues
- 9:17Speaker 6: and he signed his extension, he joked with me. He goes, well,
- 9:21Speaker 6: I know what year I'm getting traded And I was like, well,
- 9:23Speaker 6: what is that?
- 9:24Speaker 5: He said?
- 9:24Speaker 6: He said, it's the year that I'm gonna make this
- 9:27Speaker 6: much in my contract. I was like, why is that
- 9:30Speaker 6: because Bob Nutting doesn't go over that price? Is fifteen million,
- 9:35Speaker 6: two hundred and fifty thousand that new price? And is
- 9:38Speaker 6: that where we can see like they stopped short because
- 9:41Speaker 6: Brian Reynolds he's not going to make more than that
- 9:45Speaker 6: on his contract. Before the number was ten million, and
- 9:48Speaker 6: they gave ten million to Key Brian Hayes and his
- 9:50Speaker 6: first year of his extension and then it went down.
- 9:54Speaker 6: Is that number fifteen million? And you can just look
- 9:56Speaker 6: at it and say, okay, well that's not what they're
- 9:57Speaker 6: going to give anybody, And does that mean all schemes
- 10:00Speaker 6: his time is now cut by another year short based
- 10:04Speaker 6: on what Terrek Schouobile just got.
- 10:07Speaker 3: I think the Scheens thing is probably a more relevant
- 10:10Speaker 3: point to the pirates. I don't know if Bob Notting
- 10:12Speaker 3: still has that specific number. I mean, I know in
- 10:15Speaker 3: Mitch Keller's deal he's set to eventually make more than that,
- 10:18Speaker 3: and I mean that might explain why they're trying to
- 10:20Speaker 3: trade him this offseason. But I digress. The Skeens thing
- 10:23Speaker 3: is a legitimate concern because I can't even begin to
- 10:27Speaker 3: fathom what his first year of art will look like.
- 10:29Speaker 3: If he's going into that back to back cy young
- 10:32Speaker 3: winner pre ARB in this market after a potentially new
- 10:37Speaker 3: CBA is negotiated, I mean, he might be out of
- 10:40Speaker 3: their price range right then and there. And the longer
- 10:44Speaker 3: you keep them, the lesser his trade value goes down.
- 10:47Speaker 3: So that's obviously something to monitor. But yeah, it's just
- 10:52Speaker 3: I don't necessarily think the one year value is something
- 10:56Speaker 3: nutting shies away from I think it's just as simple
- 11:00Speaker 3: as he gives his general manager a number at the
- 11:04Speaker 3: beginning of the offseason and says, this is your number
- 11:07Speaker 3: that you have to spend on everything from you know,
- 11:09Speaker 3: the forty thousand dollars a year entry level data analysis
- 11:14Speaker 3: guys and your baseball op staff to your highest paid
- 11:17Speaker 3: free agent, and you have to find a way to
- 11:19Speaker 3: make it all work and don't really come asking for
- 11:22Speaker 3: more because it's probably not going to happen. That's kind
- 11:24Speaker 3: of how it's always worked in Pittsburgh. And so because
- 11:26Speaker 3: of that, because you have to feel so many spots
- 11:29Speaker 3: on the roster, it makes more sense to have your
- 11:32Speaker 3: best player making fifteen million so you can have a
- 11:34Speaker 3: couple more guys making five to ten million as opposed
- 11:37Speaker 3: to one guy making thirty million and everyone else playing
- 11:40Speaker 3: for league minimum. That's just kind of the reality of
- 11:42Speaker 3: how this club operates.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Hey, Noah Connor Griffin, you mentioned and he's number one prospect.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Is it okay if he comes up I mean in
- 11:54Speaker 4: play shortstop? Is he going to play third? I mean,
- 11:57Speaker 4: I know short stops his position. Would they just say, hey,
- 11:59Speaker 4: you're our short stuff, go get him? At nineteen and
- 12:02Speaker 4: see what happens, and then if he fails, maybe you know,
- 12:05Speaker 4: send him down and bring him back up or do
- 12:07Speaker 4: they not want to or do they want to avoid that,
- 12:09Speaker 4: because that seems like the move to make now is
- 12:12Speaker 4: like just throw him out there and see what happens.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll honestly be shocked if he's not on the
- 12:17Speaker 3: opening day lineup at this point. I mean, if he
- 12:20Speaker 3: goes out this spring and bats one hundred or if
- 12:23Speaker 3: he you know, god forbid, gets injured. Those are the
- 12:26Speaker 3: only two scenarios where I don't see him making the
- 12:29Speaker 3: team because again, they don't have a true shortstop on
- 12:32Speaker 3: this roster right now. It's probably gonna be Nick and Zalez,
- 12:35Speaker 3: who's a second baseman and wasn't that great of a
- 12:38Speaker 3: defensive second basement as is now. I think injury might
- 12:41Speaker 3: have had something to do with that. But nonetheless, Carter
- 12:44Speaker 3: Griffin is the best defensive infielder in this organization not
- 12:48Speaker 3: named Jared Triolo. Triolo is the best defender, but he's
- 12:51Speaker 3: gonna be there everyday third basement because he's the only
- 12:53Speaker 3: guy who knows how to play that position that's big
- 12:57Speaker 3: league ready right now. So they're less side of the
- 12:59Speaker 3: infield is very That's why again, I really think they
- 13:02Speaker 3: could benefit from adding a utility guy who could play
- 13:05Speaker 3: both spots, because you know what happens if Griffin, who
- 13:08Speaker 3: I think we all can agree has a very high
- 13:11Speaker 3: chance of being a productive Major League baseball player, But
- 13:14Speaker 3: what happens if you know he can't figure it out
- 13:16Speaker 3: at nineteen years old?
- 13:17Speaker 5: What do you do then?
- 13:18Speaker 3: Because you're already sacrificing offense at third base to have
- 13:21Speaker 3: a great defensive player. But are you gonna let a
- 13:24Speaker 3: nineteen year old struggle through an entire rookie campaign when
- 13:28Speaker 3: maybe he's showing that he needs some time in TRIPLEA
- 13:31Speaker 3: like other guys his age have shown earlier in their career.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I think that would be bad for everyone involved. So
- 13:37Speaker 3: I do think, yes, they need to add some depth there.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Connor Griffin probably is still the primary option. I don't
- 13:42Speaker 3: see them going out and acquiring a shortstop who they
- 13:45Speaker 3: think could be better than Connor Griffin this year. But
- 13:47Speaker 3: I do think they need someone who has a utility background,
- 13:50Speaker 3: who can play both spots on the left side of
- 13:52Speaker 3: the endfield. That can kind of be a high floor
- 13:56Speaker 3: emergency case in case of any or just you know,
- 14:01Speaker 3: a nineteen year old not being ready for the major
- 14:04Speaker 3: leagues yet.
- 14:05Speaker 4: And by the way, if the Pirates don't know if
- 14:06Speaker 4: he's ready by now, you can't take you can't look
- 14:08Speaker 4: at the spring training numbers. If he hits one hundred,
- 14:10Speaker 4: if you had seven hundred and say, oh man, he
- 14:12Speaker 4: didn't make the team because he hit one hundred, that
- 14:15Speaker 4: would be the excuse they use if he doesn't make
- 14:16Speaker 4: the team. But that tells me they didn't think he
- 14:18Speaker 4: was ready anyways. So that's that's I hate that. Oh
- 14:22Speaker 4: if he hits a hundred, now, if he gets hurt,
- 14:23Speaker 4: I understand, But if he hits a hundred, that cannot
- 14:26Speaker 4: be the Pirates excuse. He's either ready or he's not.
- 14:28Speaker 4: However he does in spring training is irrelevant in this conversation.
- 14:32Speaker 4: But we're gonna move on. We had a super chat
- 14:34Speaker 4: here and it's about the Pirates, and it's one of
- 14:36Speaker 4: those things it needs to be said. Pirates had to spend.
- 14:38Speaker 4: They aren't draft letter lottery eligible next year.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Either.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Thank you Cuch for everything we needed bat upgrades. What
- 14:44Speaker 4: what Schnoa shnow I guess Shnoa is saying is what
- 14:48Speaker 4: the White Sox went through what I think the the
- 14:51Speaker 4: Rockies went through it. If you don't finish, if you
- 14:53Speaker 4: finished in a certain area, you can't draft till tenth,
- 14:56Speaker 4: no matter what right, you can't win first. And also,
- 14:59Speaker 4: I'm gonna throw this on top of their SHNOA certain
- 15:02Speaker 4: teams have been asked to spend because there's a CBA
- 15:04Speaker 4: coming up, and they want teams to say, hey, look guys,
- 15:07Speaker 4: we've actually spent money. We don't need this so called
- 15:10Speaker 4: floor that everyone's asking for. We can't spend money we
- 15:12Speaker 4: need to. The A's have done it now, the Pirates
- 15:14Speaker 4: are doing it. The Marlins, for some reason, still haven't.
- 15:16Speaker 4: But what are your thoughts on this and what it
- 15:18Speaker 4: means for why the Pirates are spending.
- 15:21Speaker 3: No, I think you're spot on, aj. I think that
- 15:23Speaker 3: had an absolutely huge influence on this desire to spend
- 15:30Speaker 3: a little bit more of this offseason, because if you
- 15:32Speaker 3: go back and review the rhetoric of the front office
- 15:36Speaker 3: the day after the offseason, they stated numerous times team
- 15:40Speaker 3: president Travis Williams being the main culprit, that they the
- 15:44Speaker 3: resources that they had was more than enough that they
- 15:47Speaker 3: just need to allocate them better, which just is factually
- 15:52Speaker 3: incorrect because they haven't won a division since nineteen ninety two,
- 15:56Speaker 3: So yeah, I do think that there's no coincidence in
- 15:59Speaker 3: the fact that Evan Drelich reported what your the notion
- 16:03Speaker 3: of what you're saying, AJ, and I believe it was
- 16:05Speaker 3: in late October in the Athletic And then sure enough, Yeah,
- 16:08Speaker 3: the Pirates payrolls going up, and it's going up despite
- 16:11Speaker 3: them probably having less revenue coming in last season because
- 16:15Speaker 3: their attendance dipped because they weren't a very good baseball team.
- 16:18Speaker 3: So yeah, I think that. And then you also just
- 16:21Speaker 3: look at their financial commitments. None of the money they
- 16:25Speaker 3: spent this year will be on the books past twenty
- 16:28Speaker 3: twenty seven. I mean, they only signed one multi year
- 16:32Speaker 3: deal and that was o'hearne for two years. Everybody else
- 16:35Speaker 3: has been a one year deal or they acquired pre
- 16:38Speaker 3: ARB guys like Mangum and Garcia. So yeah, they they
- 16:43Speaker 3: they spent a whole bunch of not a whole bunch.
- 16:45Speaker 3: They spent money to get over that one hundred million
- 16:48Speaker 3: dollar payroll mark to make it look like they're trying.
- 16:52Speaker 3: And heck, I mean, Pirate fans don't care what the
- 16:54Speaker 3: reason is behind it. They just want to see this
- 16:56Speaker 3: team get better, and it did get better. I just
- 16:58Speaker 3: think if it was, you know, coming from the true
- 17:01Speaker 3: intention of wanting to actually win and compete and maybe
- 17:06Speaker 3: win the National League Central, which I think was very doable,
- 17:09Speaker 3: if this team's payroll just got up to like one
- 17:12Speaker 3: hundred and twenty million, they could have probably spent it
- 17:16Speaker 3: better on things that they're addressed direct needs.
- 17:22Speaker 4: That's fair, that's fair. Agreed, all right forward, Let you go.
- 17:25Speaker 4: I see you're a Mountain Union fan. They used to
- 17:27Speaker 4: be good at football, right, they were good. They won
- 17:29Speaker 4: a couple of times.
- 17:30Speaker 3: We listen, we stopped giving money to the school. They
- 17:33Speaker 3: haven't won a national title since twenty seventeen.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Exactly. They stink. They stink. So but here's my question.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Before you came out, we had this whole argument about
- 17:42Speaker 4: like the Pirates now or there was more of the
- 17:44Speaker 4: Brewers and the Diamondbacks. Right, the Brewers they make the playoffs,
- 17:49Speaker 4: but they never win, kind of like the Steelers under
- 17:51Speaker 4: Mike Thomlinson's twenty ten have kind of made the playoffs,
- 17:54Speaker 4: but they never get to where they are.
- 17:55Speaker 5: Would you rather be a team like we used were?
- 17:58Speaker 4: Scott brought up the Diamondbacks where every once in a
- 18:00Speaker 4: while they just go for it, they make a deep run,
- 18:02Speaker 4: and they might suck for a couple of years, but
- 18:04Speaker 4: then they go for it again when they see the opportunity.
- 18:07Speaker 5: So how should Pittsburgh fans feel about this?
- 18:09Speaker 4: And do you agree with that assessment that, like the
- 18:11Speaker 4: Brewers are kind of how we get there, We get there,
- 18:14Speaker 4: but we never make the final push. Or would you
- 18:17Speaker 4: rather be a team and we're using the Diamondbacks and
- 18:19Speaker 4: just throws it all in every once in a while
- 18:20Speaker 4: and makes that push.
- 18:22Speaker 3: I think championship appetites are developed over circumstance, right, Like,
- 18:26Speaker 3: if you're asking me a Pirates fan right now, I
- 18:29Speaker 3: think every Pirates fan would kill to have the similar
- 18:33Speaker 3: run that the Steelers went on where they were just
- 18:36Speaker 3: you know, barely sneaking into the playoffs, get the doors
- 18:38Speaker 3: blown off every year in the opening round, but hey,
- 18:41Speaker 3: it worked out right because they haven't seen a lot
- 18:44Speaker 3: of playoff baseball. I mean, I'm thirty years old, I've
- 18:47Speaker 3: lived in Pittsburgh almost all of my life, and I
- 18:49Speaker 3: think I've watched this team play what would that have
- 18:52Speaker 3: been seven playoff games total in my life? So I think, yeah,
- 18:57Speaker 3: Pirate fans would sign up for what the Brewers are
- 19:00Speaker 3: doing right now, or even if they could get eight
- 19:03Speaker 3: of ten years like the Cincinnati Reds had last year,
- 19:06Speaker 3: going eighty three and seventy nine and just absolutely looking
- 19:09Speaker 3: like they didn't even belong on the faield with the
- 19:11Speaker 3: Dodgers last year, they would sign up for that because
- 19:13Speaker 3: that's been such a foreign thing. Now, when you show
- 19:18Speaker 3: to be capable of reaching the playoffs consistently, those expectations change.
- 19:23Speaker 3: That's where you see, you know, Steelers fans going absolutely
- 19:26Speaker 3: nuts over Mike Tomlin because this city's known for winning
- 19:30Speaker 3: Super Bowls. So the expectation, the standard, as Mike Tomlin
- 19:34Speaker 3: liked to call it, was a little different on the
- 19:36Speaker 3: grid iron compared to the baseball field.
- 19:39Speaker 5: So, I mean, in.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Milwaukee, it's it's interesting because, I mean, they've never won
- 19:43Speaker 3: a World Series, and it does feel like they are
- 19:46Speaker 3: appreciative for the consistent success despite their small market limitations
- 19:52Speaker 3: and everything. Whereas I don't know, I think it's a
- 19:56Speaker 3: fan base by fan base thing. I think it goes
- 19:58Speaker 3: into how the other teams in that town are playing.
- 20:01Speaker 3: I think it goes into the organization's history. It's certainly
- 20:05Speaker 3: a new thing. But I think, yeah, if you could
- 20:07Speaker 3: tell any Pirate fan sign this and the Pirates will
- 20:10Speaker 3: make the playoffs four of every ten years a decade
- 20:13Speaker 3: or yeah, four years of every decade, they would sign
- 20:16Speaker 3: without even knowing what the ramifications were.
- 20:19Speaker 5: But you have Mike McCarthy. They have Mike McCarthy now.
- 20:21Speaker 4: And just for reference, the Pirates haven't won a World
- 20:24Speaker 4: Series since nineteen seventy nine, so I mean they're not
- 20:27Speaker 4: that far. If you go back to the I think
- 20:29Speaker 4: they've won two in the time that the Brewers have
- 20:31Speaker 4: been as franchise. The Brewers have won nine, but the
- 20:33Speaker 4: Pirates haven't won one in almost We're going.
- 20:36Speaker 5: On almost fifty years now, sure, which is insane.
- 20:39Speaker 2: That's quite the boomer bust.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Yeah, that's definitely boomer.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Hey we're good for one in seventy nine, then it's
- 20:48Speaker 1: going to be a minute, but maybe again.
- 20:50Speaker 5: In twenty twenty nine. Every fifty nine, Yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Yeah, Hey, championships a championship, no good stuff. Great to
- 20:57Speaker 1: have you on as always, and check I got nos
- 21:00Speaker 1: work in the Pittsburgh Post is at this morning, and
- 21:02Speaker 1: of course I'll plug Bucco Territory on the way out.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Bud Absolutely, guys, thanks for having me on.
- 21:08Speaker 1: And there it is Bucco Territory. I've got the shirt
- 21:11Speaker 1: on to cool logo. You got the pirate on the
- 21:16Speaker 1: right side for the o.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Check out the show.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Noah Hailes, Josh Harrison and Platinum Key running point part
- 21:22Speaker 1: of the Ft Network.
- 21:25Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 21:26Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 21:28Speaker 5: That's what he said.
- 21:29Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 21:33Speaker 5: By the way.
- 21:34Speaker 4: By the way, I had to text my stat people
- 21:36Speaker 4: and tell them, hey, I have a game coming up
- 21:38Speaker 4: on March six, so just you know, so I could
- 21:40Speaker 4: take care of those stat guys crats, just in case
- 21:42Speaker 4: you're wondering about those stat guys behind the scenes that
- 21:45Speaker 4: no one knows, who's ever heard of, Just so they
- 21:48Speaker 4: know that they're taken care of. My favorite part of
- 21:50Speaker 4: that rant was the fact was the fact that the
- 21:54Speaker 4: dude threw me in there like he's been taking care
- 21:56Speaker 4: of me for for it might have been it might
- 21:59Speaker 4: have been a girl, I don't know, even taking care
- 22:01Speaker 4: of me behind the scenes. It was a boy because
- 22:03Speaker 4: he said his name, I forget what his name was,
- 22:05Speaker 4: but he said, you miss this whole thing, didn't you?
- 22:08Speaker 2: Was I out this day?
- 22:09Speaker 4: No so this weekend, that's what he said. Well, yeah,
- 22:12Speaker 4: you know what this is actually perta. So we had
- 22:14Speaker 4: a Twitter thing where we put out our thing where
- 22:16Speaker 4: we said the analytics oh when everyone just blew up
- 22:20Speaker 4: and like we hate, which we don't. You're just saying
- 22:23Speaker 4: you can selectively apply anything to anything, make whatever you
- 22:26Speaker 4: want look good or bad. Fine, we have different opinions,
- 22:30Speaker 4: although we actually kind of have the same opinion, but
- 22:32Speaker 4: we just said it different.
- 22:33Speaker 5: Whatever.
- 22:34Speaker 4: Okay, some guy on there goes this take is terrible,
- 22:40Speaker 4: but these two behind the scenes are even worse. I
- 22:42Speaker 4: used to run I used to find stats for him,
- 22:45Speaker 4: So these guys are terrible behind the scenes, terrible, terrible.
- 22:53Speaker 4: So then so then I'm like, uh this, and then
- 22:57Speaker 4: I said uh so then I'm I'm like, well, if
- 23:00Speaker 4: you're gonna call me names, like who are you?
- 23:02Speaker 5: When did I work with you? Have I ever met you?
- 23:04Speaker 4: And he's like no, And I'm like, okay, then how
- 23:06Speaker 4: do you know what I'm like behind closed doors? And
- 23:09Speaker 4: he's like, well, all the broadcast associates are just so
- 23:11Speaker 4: mean to me when I worked at Sports Radar and
- 23:13Speaker 4: I'm so happy I never got to meet you. I'm like,
- 23:16Speaker 4: what are you talking about. So he's first of all,
- 23:19Speaker 4: every Stack guy that I've ever met. I don't know
- 23:21Speaker 4: that I've ever met anyone from Sports Radar, but every
- 23:24Speaker 4: Stack I love my stat The stat guys are awesome.
- 23:27Speaker 5: Those guys bust.
- 23:28Speaker 4: Their ass and get no reward at all other than
- 23:31Speaker 4: just handing us cards during the game. And the guys
- 23:34Speaker 4: behind the scenes, I don't even know anything about it.
- 23:36Speaker 4: Like if I meet some and you've done games, if
- 23:39Speaker 4: you're stacked, you hit the talk back and there's somebody,
- 23:42Speaker 4: usually a BA broadcast associate assistant that's there, and you say, hey,
- 23:46Speaker 4: can you give me this stat? And they and they
- 23:48Speaker 4: here it is, and they they hit you in your
- 23:51Speaker 4: ear with it, or they run it on the thing
- 23:54Speaker 4: that no one can see, like they say, hey, how
- 23:56Speaker 4: about if we build this graphic for you. You love
- 23:58Speaker 4: those guys, I know, and they make my job so
- 24:01Speaker 4: much better and easier.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Wait, so there's a disgruntled but I'm not going to.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Say the guy's name. He actually threw his name out there,
- 24:07Speaker 4: did Oh yeah? He said he worked at Sports Radar
- 24:09Speaker 4: for two years.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Ago, but you never worked with him and he hated
- 24:11Speaker 2: his job. So now he's taking it out on you apparently.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I did not know any of that.
- 24:16Speaker 5: Oh yeah, you mess.
- 24:17Speaker 4: So Crawtston text me yesterday He's like, hey, do you
- 24:19Speaker 4: know this? And so I reached out to my people
- 24:21Speaker 4: at Fox that were like my DA's at this time.
- 24:23Speaker 4: I'm like, do you guys know this guy is? And
- 24:24Speaker 4: I sent him and they're like no, But I asked
- 24:27Speaker 4: this first one, then I asked the next person.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Clearly made an impact and I don't even know.
- 24:33Speaker 4: I don't even know, but I was just like, I mean,
- 24:34Speaker 4: I was, I mean, I tried to be as nice
- 24:36Speaker 4: as I could be, like without being like dude. And
- 24:38Speaker 4: I finally said, he sounds like you're mad at the
- 24:40Speaker 4: ba's but I'm glad you're doing well. Now he has
- 24:43Speaker 4: some some stupid Twitter thing he does, but but not
- 24:47Speaker 4: a ton of followers. But it was like, dude, like
- 24:51Speaker 4: you need to, Like, I figure, I see you're trying
- 24:53Speaker 4: to get clicks here, but let's calm down.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Wow and krats, how dare you? You're terrible too?
- 24:58Speaker 1: According to this guy's friends, I was uncles dry cleaning representative.
- 25:03Speaker 6: I was just I was just riding to school with
- 25:05Speaker 6: AJ and I caught astray like, oh man. I was like,
- 25:09Speaker 6: I was like, hey, AJ, how's your day? And this
- 25:11Speaker 6: dude just came in. It was like Cratch and Saw
- 25:13Speaker 6: two and I was like, oh man, I don't have
- 25:16Speaker 6: a good career banning average, but.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Wow.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Anyway, so I don't know what we're going to talk about, but.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I'm doing tonight when I can't sleep.
- 25:26Speaker 5: That was a whole threat. I was just like, I
- 25:28Speaker 5: was like, what is this guy talking about?
- 25:30Speaker 1: I was it was apparently trending when you guys, you know,
- 25:33Speaker 1: whatever clip we put out, we put out so much
- 25:36Speaker 1: and I missed it.
- 25:36Speaker 2: So I am going to have some fun tonight. Let's
- 25:40Speaker 2: get to That's what he said.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Clip wise, We'll start with the Philly Show part of
- 25:44Speaker 1: the FT Network, offering Bryce Harper in a different role.
- 25:50Speaker 7: Sho hey o Tani last season had six hundred and
- 25:52Speaker 7: eighty played appearances hitting leadoff.
- 25:54Speaker 2: That's a big seller.
- 25:55Speaker 7: Mike Trout when he was healthy and playing a lot,
- 25:58Speaker 7: he was starting to hit lead off a lot for
- 25:59Speaker 7: the Angel You know, he's obviously the lead hitter. A
- 26:02Speaker 7: Fernando Testis Junior hit lead off a lot last year,
- 26:05Speaker 7: a little bit of a different player. But the fact
- 26:07Speaker 7: that shohe Otani hits lead off, he's up there all
- 26:10Speaker 7: the time. Every spot you drop in the lineup is
- 26:14Speaker 7: about seventeen fewer play appearances over the course of the season.
- 26:17Speaker 7: So hypothetically you have moved Harper up from third to first.
- 26:22Speaker 2: He hits thirty.
- 26:24Speaker 7: Four more times in twenty twenty six than he would
- 26:26Speaker 7: if he hits third.
- 26:27Speaker 2: I like so, That's why I would love to see it.
- 26:30Speaker 7: I don't think Bryce would go for it. I don't
- 26:32Speaker 7: think Rob is necessarily going to push him into it,
- 26:34Speaker 7: But I love that idea of having Harper hit first, Turner, Schwarber,
- 26:40Speaker 7: and then Alec Bohm.
- 26:41Speaker 5: I like it too. It makes a lot of sense.
- 26:44Speaker 5: But he's got to buy in rights. That's gonna be
- 26:48Speaker 5: a hard buy in.
- 26:52Speaker 4: Okay, sure, if you think it makes a better Sure
- 26:54Speaker 4: why not Torboro? Though I thought it leads off, hit
- 26:57Speaker 4: leads off a lot, not anymore.
- 26:59Speaker 5: That end of last year.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Yeah, just Trey Turner speed get a run on the board.
- 27:07Speaker 6: I agree they cut down their strikeouts last year as
- 27:11Speaker 6: a team. You know, whether or not people are like, well,
- 27:14Speaker 6: that's a good idea, bad idea they did. So if
- 27:18Speaker 6: you're not, if you're not an all or nothing team,
- 27:23Speaker 6: Maybe it doesn't play. Shohotani was also coming off a
- 27:27Speaker 6: year where he had shoot. I forgot how many stone
- 27:30Speaker 6: bases he had? Did you have forty the year before?
- 27:33Speaker 6: Like he's not gonna he's not gonna steal as much.
- 27:35Speaker 6: So like everybody makes such a big deal out of
- 27:39Speaker 6: the leadoff spot. Philly was burning because they were like,
- 27:42Speaker 6: Schwarmer's got to get out of the leadoff spot.
- 27:44Speaker 5: He has to.
- 27:46Speaker 6: The leadoff spot is such a miss misinterpreted spot in
- 27:51Speaker 6: the lineup, Like you're only leading off once.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you get more late appearances, you'll.
- 27:58Speaker 5: Get more plate appearances.
- 27:59Speaker 6: And I think the number is actually closer to forty
- 28:01Speaker 6: two than the thirty four. But you know, we're splitting hairs.
- 28:07Speaker 6: But to me, I don't hate it. I don't think
- 28:10Speaker 6: Bryce Harper is Kyle Schwarber. But I know Kyle Schwarber's
- 28:13Speaker 6: you know he's gonna run up there some years with
- 28:16Speaker 6: a three eighty three ninety on base percentage. And you
- 28:21Speaker 6: want guys on base when you hit bingers, Like that's
- 28:24Speaker 6: how teams are building, building their lineup.
- 28:27Speaker 5: So if you think, if you think.
- 28:29Speaker 6: Harper, I think I think it blends more to the left, right, left, right,
- 28:34Speaker 6: the platoon advantages, which I think will help the rest
- 28:37Speaker 6: of the lineup. The only time you'd have a left
- 28:39Speaker 6: left is when you have Crawford. Most likely Crawford play
- 28:42Speaker 6: center field for them. He'd be hitting nine, so you
- 28:45Speaker 6: would have that, So there's your platoon advantage. I think
- 28:48Speaker 6: that's why most people why the Dodgers like having show
- 28:52Speaker 6: Hey leading off. They even started kept them leading off
- 28:54Speaker 6: when he was pitching, which I would have thought, Hey,
- 28:56Speaker 6: maybe we'll slide him down a little bit so he's
- 28:58Speaker 6: not running in from the mound to get all of
- 29:01Speaker 6: his armor on to go up to hit, but they
- 29:04Speaker 6: never did, and those few extra bats could be a
- 29:07Speaker 6: difference in.
- 29:08Speaker 5: Winning the division or needing to play in a wildcard series.
- 29:13Speaker 1: By the way, Otani in twenty twenty four fifty nine
- 29:16Speaker 1: stolen base members, fifty to fifty runs nine, I know
- 29:22Speaker 1: it does it. It's insane. I get to show Hey
- 29:25Speaker 1: Otani for our last clip of the day. Mark Pryor,
- 29:28Speaker 1: pitching coach for the Dodgers, was on Dodgers territory, and
- 29:31Speaker 1: we have a little clip right now.
- 29:33Speaker 8: He's throwing bullpens. Last year, you know, was obviously a
- 29:36Speaker 8: very unique year. He was coming off Tommy John and
- 29:38Speaker 8: then he had the shoulder injury on the non throwing arm,
- 29:40Speaker 8: and this year, yeah, full version. The WBC will maybe
- 29:44Speaker 8: provide a little bit of wrinkle. But he's so flexible
- 29:46Speaker 8: with what he does, his ability to win, he can pitch,
- 29:49Speaker 8: and how he goes about keeping himself sharp, So it's
- 29:52Speaker 8: gonna be fun to watch him. We'll go into spring training,
- 29:54Speaker 8: he'll keep throwing bullpens, you know, try to get him
- 29:56Speaker 8: to face some hitters before he leaves for the WBC,
- 30:00Speaker 8: and then we'll just from then we just kind of
- 30:02Speaker 8: have to wait and see where everything's at. The fun
- 30:04Speaker 8: part about show is as long as he knows when
- 30:06Speaker 8: he's pitching, he'll pitch whenever, if it's six days rest,
- 30:09Speaker 8: if it's eight days rest, if it's three days rest. Like,
- 30:12Speaker 8: he's willing to do what he needs to do to
- 30:14Speaker 8: help this club win ball games. And so we'll just
- 30:17Speaker 8: kind of plant it out and kind of go day
- 30:19Speaker 8: by day like we always do when we're in kind
- 30:21Speaker 8: of these unorthodox situations where you can't just map out
- 30:24Speaker 8: the next four weeks.
- 30:29Speaker 2: What are you laughing about?
- 30:30Speaker 5: Just ah, whatever, you we'll figure it out it's fine.
- 30:34Speaker 5: We're gonna make the playoffs. Like we'll figure it out,
- 30:37Speaker 5: Like it's totally fine. Most teams will be like, oh crap,
- 30:40Speaker 5: one of our best pitchers. It'll be fine, Like we'll definitely.
- 30:45Speaker 5: Prior is like, it's fine.
- 30:47Speaker 6: If he's got to take an extra you know, a
- 30:49Speaker 6: week or two at the beginning of the season, until
- 30:50Speaker 6: he's ready to pitch, it's totally fine.
- 30:52Speaker 5: He'll hit a couple dangers and then we'll be good
- 30:54Speaker 5: to go. True. I just had him Mark Prior for
- 30:57Speaker 5: a long time ago, and it's not his fault for
- 31:00Speaker 5: being a Cub. No.
- 31:02Speaker 4: Well, yeah, actually, you know what not yes, because in
- 31:06Speaker 4: two thousand he's actually a really nice guy. In two
- 31:08Speaker 4: thousand and one, when I was of the Twins, they
- 31:11Speaker 4: picked Joe Mauer one, and Prior went to to the Cubs. Okay, well,
- 31:14Speaker 4: we lost two thousand and two ALCS to the Angels,
- 31:17Speaker 4: two thousand and three DS to the Yankees.
- 31:19Speaker 5: We could have had Mark Pryor, and I listened. Joe
- 31:21Speaker 5: Mayer went on to be in the Hall of Fame.
- 31:22Speaker 4: I get it, But for selfishly, it would have been
- 31:25Speaker 4: nice to run Mark Pryor out there in those playoff
- 31:27Speaker 4: series and with Johan Santana, Brad Radkey and some of
- 31:31Speaker 4: those other guys. Yeah, I'm not saying but so yeah,
- 31:34Speaker 4: I mean just selfish reasons.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Not right, you wish you had him?
- 31:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I mean Joe and he got hurt obviously,
- 31:40Speaker 4: but Joe went on and.
