- 0:29Plankton Aerosol Cloud Ocean Ecosystem mission, also called
- 0:34PACE, a nearly $1 billion Environmental Research
- 0:38satellite. Now, this event took place early
- 0:41on Thursday, despite previous threats to cancel the project.
- 0:44We'll get into that a little bit later.
- 0:46It's pretty juicy, and the mission's goal is to enhance our
- 0:49understanding of climate change by studying the intricate
- 0:52interactions among carbon aerosols and marine life on a
- 0:57global scale. Now, Karen Saint Germain, the
- 1:00director of NASA's Earth Sciences Division, said that
- 1:04Pace's potential to revolutionize our comprehension
- 1:07of aerosols, clouds, and the global energy balance is one of
- 1:11the key factors for this mission.
- 1:13She drew parallels between the significance of Pace's
- 1:15contributions to oceanography and the James Webb Space
- 1:18Telescope's contributions to cosmology, emphasizing the
- 1:22mission's expected profound impact on our knowledge of
- 1:25oceanic and terrestrial life right here on our planet Earth.
- 1:29Now the mission faced delays due to adverse weather conditions,
- 1:32but eventually launched from Cape Canaveral, marking a
- 1:35significant achievement for SpaceX.
- 1:37The Falconite's rocket liftoff was not only a visual spectacle
- 1:40but also a technical milestone, achieving the first polar orbit
- 1:44launch from the East Coast from the US government since 1960.
- 1:50Huge deal in the spaceflight community.
- 1:52Now, Pace's journey to the launchpad was fraught with
- 1:55challenges. This is where we get a little
- 1:56bit of juicy stuff here, including threats of
- 1:58cancellation under the Trump administration.
- 2:01However, persistent support from the scientific community and the
- 2:05pushback from NASA and the pushback from the public as
- 2:09well, ensured the project's continuation is noted by Jeremy
- 2:12Werndell, PACE project scientist.
- 2:15Now equipped with Advanced Instruments, the PACE satellite
- 2:19aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the
- 2:22interactions between the ocean, the atmosphere, and also the
- 2:25land. This holistic approach is
- 2:27crucial for unraveling the complexities of Earth's climate
- 2:30system and addressing one of the most significant uncertainties
- 2:34in climate modeling. The mission is expected to offer
- 2:37a high precision data critical for refining computer models
- 2:40used by policymakers, and this data will include real time
- 2:43measurements of aerosol movement, plankton, health and
- 2:47carbon transport, offering invaluable insights into climate
- 2:50change dynamics. And NASA's officials under score
- 2:53the importance of understanding the interactions between ocean
- 2:56life and the atmosphere in addressing the climate crisis.
- 2:59The PACE mission is set to provide crucial data on aerosols
- 3:04and their role in cloud formation and weather systems,
- 3:07shedding light on a key scientific mystery of our own
- 3:10planet, Earth. Now with a total cost of $940
- 3:14million, almost a billion dollars, the PACE mission
- 3:17represents a significant investment in Earth observation
- 3:21technology. It's successful deployment and
- 3:24forthcoming scientific observations which will gather
- 3:27data and will The data will be used for years, decades ahead.
- 3:31It's expected to begin in about two months.
- 3:34With that data collection. Now we're all waiting for this,
- 3:37and the launch of PACE is part of NASA's broader effort to
- 3:41utilize space based assets to study our own Mother Earth and
- 3:45also the changing climate right here with us now.
- 3:48This mission, along with others like the SWOT mission, aims to
- 3:53revolutionize our understanding of Earth zone's oceans and their
- 3:56role in the global climate system.
- 3:59Now, NASA's commitment to addressing the climate crisis is
- 4:01evident in its deployment In missions like PACE.
- 4:05Efforts are vital for providing the global community with a lot
- 4:08of data needed to make informed decisions about protecting our
- 4:11planet and all the inhabitants, not only humans but also the
- 4:15animals on our planet. Now, the record-breaking
- 4:18temperatures of the past decade highlight the urgent need for
- 4:20missions like PACE. By providing a better
- 4:23understanding of carbon exchange between the ocean and the
- 4:25atmosphere, NASA aims to enhance our ability to respond to
- 4:29climate change. Aerosols, while small, play a
- 4:32significant role in Earth's climate by influencing weather,
- 4:35air quality and also the temperature.
- 4:38The PACE missions detailed study of aerosols and improve our
- 4:41understanding of their impact and help identify areas with
- 4:44poor air quality. Now the oceans of our planet,
- 4:47they cover about 70% of our surface.
- 4:51They remain one of the least understood parts of our planet.
- 4:54PACE aims to change this by offering unprecedented insights
- 4:57into ocean biography and the intricate web of life that they
- 5:01support. Now, Phytoplankton, despite
- 5:04their microscopic size, are crucial for marine ecosystems
- 5:08too, and also the global carbon cycle.
- 5:11Pace's advanced instruments will allow scientists to study these

- 5:18understanding of their role in Earth's biosphere.
- 5:22And the mission's innovative tech will enable researchers to
- 5:25differentiate among thousands of phytoplankton species, providing
- 5:29new insights into marine biodiversity and its
- 5:32implications for the food web, and also carbon sequestration.
- 5:36Now, the changing conditions of the world's oceans, including
- 5:39rising temperatures and alter nutrient distribution, pose
- 5:42challenges for marine life. Pace's observations will
- 5:45contribute to our understanding of how these changes are
- 5:49affecting phytoplankton communities and by extension,
- 5:52the entire marine ecosystem. And the successful launch of
- 5:56PACE is a huge leap forward in our ability to monitor and
- 6:01understand Earth's climate system.
