- 0:00Hello Shalom. Welcome back to Scripture
- 0:02Central for our come, follow me on the Book of Revelation.
- 0:05I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson and I love this book.
- 0:09I feel like years and years and years of study, and it is one
- 0:13that I think testifies of our Savior like no other book.
- 0:17And it also lets us know what's happening in the near future and
- 0:20how we can better prepare for it today.
- 0:23Our group of scriptures are starting with Chapter 6 and
- 0:26going to Chapter 15. We are so fortunate to study the
- 0:29Book of Revelation hand in hand with section 77.
- 0:34The Lord inspired so many things that were confusing to Joseph to
- 0:38better understand and it just opens up the book.
- 0:41It was a sealed book to most people understanding it, you
- 0:44know, it's not talking about Nero, it's not talking, it's
- 0:46talking about. And then of course we we learn
- 0:50the throne of God. And I'm also convinced that by
- 0:53understanding the plan of salvation in the temple and with
- 0:57the spirit of revelation, if we lived then I think we could have
- 1:01understood it better. But we are so fortunate to live
- 1:03now and to have the ability to look at it with the blessings of
- 1:08the plan of salvation. The chapters we're looking at
- 1:10today have only 11 verses from the time period of Adam clear up
- 1:15to 1000 AD are the common era, just 11 short verses and then we
- 1:21get only 14 verses from the time of 1000 to 2000 are
- 1:25approximately give or take some time.
- 1:27So very short verses there. The majority of it from chapter
- 1:318. And this actually goes clear
- 1:33through the end of chapter 19 is all on the calamities after
- 1:37opening the 7th seal. So that's our day and age.
- 1:41According to Joseph Smith's interpretation, 201 verses are
- 1:45all about the few years that are happening right now.
- 1:48I mentioned last week that the organization is basically
- 1:51chronological, but there's some intermissions, some some
- 1:54flashbacks. He starts talking about
- 1:56something. He says, oh, I I need to explain
- 1:57to you who the devil is. And then he goes back and gives
- 2:00some little intermission. So chapter six, we begin opening
- 2:03up the seals of this scroll that we were introduced to in Chapter
- 2:075 that Christ is able to take. He, as the great judge, has the
- 2:11right and authority, and he is worthy to open each scroll, so
- 2:16we'll unfold that history. He has four horses from the time
- 2:19of Adam to the time of the Lord's birth.
- 2:22And those four horses are very symbolic to symbolize the
- 2:25history of that world. And then in chapter seven, we
- 2:27have this interlude where he talks about the purified exalted
- 2:32state, and he uses the number 144,000.
- 2:35In chapter 8:00 and 9:00, we'll talk about the opening of the
- 2:387th seal. We've got 7 angels and seven
- 2:41servants, and we start with our woes.
- 2:42Our first woe comes there in Chapter 9.
- 2:45Chapter 10 is an interlude or an explanation about John's call
- 2:51and the seven thunders. Then in Chapter 11, they're
- 2:54still just opening up this 7th seal and the Lord tells him to
- 2:59measure the temple. We have some interesting symbols
- 3:02with the Old Testament. We talk about our two witnesses
- 3:05in Jerusalem that are going to stand in the Temple to testify
- 3:08for 3 1/2 years before they're destroyed.
- 3:11We're also told that before these two witnesses there's
- 3:13going to be a restoration, the Jews will return to their
- 3:16homeland and that Jerusalem will be rebuilt.
- 3:19Chapter 11 also talks about the 2nd woe and the Heavenly Temple.
- 3:24Then chapters 12 to 14 briefly talk about the Kingdom of God
- 3:28and the Kingdom of Satan, and will be introduced to a
- 3:30wonderful woman who represents the church.
- 3:33She's clothed in the sun, her feet are on the moon, and she
- 3:37represents the people of God. In opposition to the goodness,
- 3:41we also have a wicked person introduced, the dragon, the
- 3:44beast. He's a counterfeit lamb and
- 3:47power. He represents all the political,
- 3:49philosophical and economical seduction of Satan.
- 3:52And then we'll end this week at least with another interlude in
- 3:55chapter 15 where the song of Moses and the lamb is sung and
- 3:59it's just just beautiful. The next week we'll finish up,
- 4:02the opening of the 7th seal will be complete and all the way
- 4:05through the Millennium and the great celestialized Earth
- 4:09Chapter 6, verse one begins. I watched as the Lamb opened the
- 4:13first of the seven seals, and I heard, as it were, the noise of
- 4:17Thunder and one of the four beasts.
- 4:20These are these living creatures that are around the throne of
- 4:22God, so they're good. It's hard in King James because
- 4:24the beasts are the good and the bad.
- 4:26So I I really prefer other translations on this book, but
- 4:29the Angel says, come and see. Now this is so significant to
- 4:34me. Do you remember back in the
- 4:35Gospel of John before John is a disciple of Jesus of Nazareth.
- 4:39He is a disciple of John the Baptist.
- 4:42And he listens to John. He's there.
- 4:45At the baptism he hears John announce that Jesus of Nazareth
- 4:48is the Savior or the Messiah who is to come.
- 4:51And so Andrew and John, the two fishing partners, are down there
- 4:58at the River Jordan, and they follow the Lord and they say,
- 5:02Master, where dwellest thou? And the Lord says, come and see.
- 5:07And now here in this vision, one of the great living creatures
- 5:11around the throne of God is talking and says come and see.
- 5:16Now in section 77 we're told that Revelation chapter 6, verse
- 5:19one, the seven seals. What do they mean?
- 5:22The Lord taught Joseph. We are to understand that the
- 5:25first seal contains the things in the first thousand years.
- 5:27Now I mentioned this last week, but the reason why I'm
- 5:30mentioning it again is this is so helpful in understanding the
- 5:34book. I can't tell you how many
- 5:36biblical scholars have grappled with this for centuries without
- 5:40coming to this simple explanation.
- 5:42That is the chronology of the history of the earth.
- 5:45And so with that understanding, I've got it another chart here
- 5:48that shows the time periods that we're talking about. 4000 BC is
- 5:53Adam, 3000 is Noah, 2000 is Abraham, 1000 is King David, And
- 5:59then of course our savior is born around the time that we
- 6:02refer to as zero. And then about 1000 AD we've got
- 6:06reformers and and during that period of time the Restoration
- 6:09comes. And then in 2000 we have our
- 6:12prophets, President Hinckley and Monson and President Russell M
- 6:15Nelson. So far with more to come, I'm
- 6:18sure. So as we look at the six seals
- 6:21in light of this very helpful information from the Lord to
- 6:25Joseph Smith, we see continuity between the entire 1st 12
- 6:31chapters of the book. And we can flow and we can
- 6:34understand who they're talking about.
- 6:36The first one says, I watched the lamb open the first of the
- 6:39seven seals and then were introduced to the four horsemen
- 6:44of the Apocalypse. Remember, in Rome, a horse is a
- 6:47war animal. You know, this is their tank.
- 6:49It's not a domesticated animal. We're not talking about
- 6:52something that would help on a farm.
- 6:54This is a symbol of war and the hosts of heaven are coming.
- 6:58So in verse one he said come and see.
- 7:00And then in verse two he says, there before me was a White
- 7:03Horse, and his rider held a bow and he was given a crown and he
- 7:08rode as a conqueror bent on conquering.
- 7:11Now this is significant in the Roman world, because a
- 7:14conquering general was allowed to ride on a White Horse or have
- 7:18a white pair of horses pull his chariot, so the crown would be
- 7:22given if he conquered. And the White Horse is
- 7:25significant. So this first thousand years
- 7:27from Adam to Noah is represented by a conquering horse.
- 7:32Can you think of anything in that period of 1000 year history
- 7:35that would have represented from God's perspective, a conqueror?
- 7:40I think this is Enoch. This is this is Enoch. 365 years
- 7:45of preaching the gospel and the people were able to create a
- 7:49Zion society. They lived with one heart and
- 7:52one mind, and there was no poor among them.
- 7:54They were unified in Christ. They had the gifts of charity
- 7:57and faith and hope, and they spent their energy on what was
- 8:01most important. So this is a exciting thing to
- 8:04look at. This first seal and the
- 8:07Conqueror being either Adam or Enoch or one of the great and
- 8:10noble ones in that period of time.
- 8:13The second seal is open. Next, from approximately 3000 to
- 8:162000 BC, Revelation chapter 6, verse four reads that the second
- 8:20horse was red and had power to him, was given on to SAT to take
- 8:25peace from the earth, and that they would kill one another.
- 8:29And there was given unto him a great sword.
- 8:31This is a period of destruction. This is terrible.
- 8:34Well, remember the city of Enoch was all the righteous.
- 8:36So all the righteous had been left, and the only people that
- 8:39were left were the wicked. And the third seal is described
- 8:42sort of like starvation. And they talk about this Black
- 8:45Horse. And one of the examples is given
- 8:48in verse five is saying they're 2 lbs of wheat for a day's wages
- 8:54and 6 lbs of barley for a day's wages.
- 8:56So your entire day is spent on just the food for your family.
- 9:01You're barely surviving because of the famines and the
- 9:04starvation, the difficulty, time, and the history of the
- 9:07world. Everywhere we read is smitten
- 9:10with famines and starvation during this period of time.
- 9:14The 4th seal from 1000 years before the Lord's birth is
- 9:18described as a pale rider on sort of a green or a death
- 9:22colored horse. Chapter 6 verse seven reads They
- 9:26were given power over 1/4 of the earth to kill with a sword, with
- 9:30famine and with pestilence. These four horsemen then end.
- 9:34We don't have any more horse riders, they're all the 1000
- 9:37years prior to John's life. And then we have the 5th seal,
- 9:43which comes at the time of the Lord's resurrection, when John
- 9:46is living. And it says, I saw under the
- 9:49altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God
- 9:54and for the testimony that they had upheld.
- 9:57And then, skipping down a little bit, John cries out.
- 9:59How long you know these are his people, These are his Saints
- 10:03that are being martyred for their beliefs, and it's just
- 10:06killing him. And so he pleads with the Lord.
- 10:09You know, I thought this wasn't going to be this long.
- 10:13When are you coming back? But the Lord promises Him in
- 10:16chapter 6, verse 11, that those white robes were given to every
- 10:21one of them, and it was said unto them that they should rest
- 10:26yet for a little season. Now the word rest is interesting
- 10:29when we take it in the scriptural context.
- 10:32We're told in the Doctrine Covenants that the rest of the
- 10:35Lord is entering into His presence.
- 10:38So these Saints have entered into the Lord's presence and He
- 10:42will give them rest. We don't warn that they're taken
- 10:45from this earth. They are arriving in the arms of
- 10:48their savior. The 6th seal is representative
- 10:51approximately 1000 AD to 2000. And it says that there was a
- 10:56great earthquake and the sun turned black with sackcloth.
- 11:00This is chapter 6 verses 12 to 17.
- 11:03And the moon was like blood and the stars fell to the earth.
- 11:06You know, we have had so much pollution and disasters and
- 11:09natural calamities that have caused the the sun to be
- 11:13darkened and the moon to be red with blood.
- 11:16This is a this is an image that we can all relate to, can't we?
- 11:19Chapter 6, verse 14 says that the heavens departed as a scroll
- 11:24when it was rolled together and every mountain and island were
- 11:27moved out of its place. Now this is sort of an
- 11:30interesting image because there has been a little bit of
- 11:33volcanic changing and islands are moving an inch or two, but
- 11:37it doesn't quite fit. If the heavens are like a scroll
- 11:41and it's opened. When the scroll is opened, you
- 11:44can read it, you can learn what's happening.
- 11:47So that might be a symbolic way of interpreting this, I am not
- 11:51sure. But the idea that every mountain
- 11:53and hill is moved also relates back to what their savior taught
- 11:56us when He was on the earth, that even the rocks would cry
- 12:00out if they could not testify of the Lord, and that the great
- 12:04darkness at the Savior's death. Now the earth mourns with the
- 12:07Lord and lives with him too. Chapter 6, verse 15 and 16
- 12:12continue on. Then the kings of the earth, the
- 12:14rich, the mighty, it goes on. The slave, the free.
- 12:18They're all hiding in caves. They're among the rocks of the
- 12:21mountains and they call out, fall on us, hide us from the
- 12:24face of him who sits on the throne.
- 12:26You know, the destruction. The calamities of these last
- 12:29days are so horrific that everyone is just begging to be
- 12:33hidden from God. Chapter 7 continues on.
- 12:37I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth
- 12:39restraining the winds. And remember the word wind in
- 12:43Greek is the same as the spirit. And we saw that in Nicodemus
- 12:47John chapter 4 where he uses the word play on wind and spirit.
- 12:50And now John is using the same word play here, that these
- 12:53angels are holding back the wind and the spirit.
- 12:57And we continue on to read what Joseph asked about this.
- 13:01What are we to understand about these four angels spoken of in
- 13:04Chapter 7, verse one? And the Lord answered that
- 13:06they're the angels sent forth from God, to whom is given power
- 13:10over the four parts of the earth.
- 13:12So the whole earth is often described as #4.
- 13:15I don't think too many people really thought it was flat at
- 13:17this time. Maybe later in the Dark Ages,
- 13:19but not not not now, but the four parts of the earth to save
- 13:23life and to destroy. These are they who have the
- 13:27everlasting gospel to commit to every nation kindred tongue, and
- 13:31people having power to shut up the heavens and to seal it up
- 13:35unto life, or to cast down in the regions of darkness.
- 13:39So the sealing power is returning.
- 13:41God's power is coming down to earth.
- 13:44Just to remind you, we have all this angelic intervention on the
- 13:47earth. I remember back in the Doctrine
- 13:49Covenants in section 130, the Lord taught Joseph that all the
- 13:53angels who ministered to this earth have a lifetime on this
- 13:57earth. They've either already been born
- 13:59or they will be born. But if we read about an Angel,
- 14:02they belong here. They're they're us.
- 14:04They're part of us. Revelation Chapter 7 through 9,
- 14:08just to review, talks about these four points that the
- 14:13angels are coming to destroy life.
- 14:15They're coming to preside over the missionary work.
- 14:18They are coming to shut up the heavens, and they are coming to
- 14:21seal the Saints to eternal life or to seal some to damnation.
- 14:26So that is a brief overview at these two chapters in from 7:00
- 14:31to 9:00, but now slowly going through it.
- 14:34In Chapter 7, verse two, it says I saw another Angel ascending
- 14:39from the east holding the seal of the living God, and he
- 14:43shouted with a loud voice to the four angels.
- 14:46So Joseph says, well who's the Angel from the east?
- 14:48This is section 77, verse 9. The Lord tells him he is whom is
- 14:53given the seal of the living God over the 12 tribes of Israel,
- 14:59Wherefore he crieth to the four angels having the everlasting
- 15:02gospel. This is Elias, which was to come
- 15:07to gather together the tribes of Israel and restore all things.
- 15:11Now, the name Elias is almost as common as the name Mary.
- 15:14You know, it's it's tricky. We've got Elias as a title of
- 15:18one who's coming to prepare the way.
- 15:19So in that context, John the Baptist was an Elias.
- 15:23But in the Greek language, Elias is also the name for Elijah.
- 15:28So it's a little bit confusing, but in this situation, this
- 15:31Angel from the east is a messenger of the Lord who's
- 15:35going to come and gather together the 12 tribes of
- 15:38Israel. Revelation chapter 3 continues
- 15:41on. Do not harm the land until we
- 15:46seal the servants of our God on their foreheads.
- 15:49This is a sacred message, and he talks about sealing later on,
- 15:53sealing up sealed 2 This is a powerful word that's not as much
- 15:57of our vocabulary as it was in the ancient world, but with the
- 16:01ceilings on the scrolls. And now the idea of making
- 16:05something permanent, of making sure something can be only be
- 16:09read by a judge, you know it all ties in with the same things
- 16:12that we read about earlier. Verse 4 continues on.
- 16:15I heard the number of those were sealed was 144,000 from all the
- 16:19tribes of Israel. As we talked about the
- 16:21numerology earlier, 144,000 is 12 ^2 and thousand is the
- 16:26largest number. And so anytime you add it to
- 16:29something it, it makes it more complete and whole or perfected
- 16:32and anytime you square a number, it's perfected.
- 16:35So you have God's order, the 12 parts of the creation, the 12
- 16:40moons in the year, and then the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12
- 16:43apostles of the Lamb. God's order is now perfected.
- 16:47So those who are sealed are part of God's order.
- 16:50Do I believe it specifically means an exact number?
- 16:55I don't know. I'll put that on the back
- 16:58burner. I doubt it.
- 17:00I think it is symbolic of those who come unto Christ.
- 17:03But when Joseph asked the Lord about this in section 77, verse
- 17:0711, he said those who are sealed are high priests ordained unto
- 17:12the Holy order of God. That's another name for the
- 17:15Melchizedek priesthood to administer the everlasting
- 17:18gospel. For they are they who are
- 17:20ordained out of every nation, kindred, tongue, and people by
- 17:24the angels, to whom is given power over the nations of the
- 17:27earth to bring as many as will come to the Church of the first
- 17:32born. So these are people who are
- 17:35working to gather Israel, They have been endowed in the Temple,
- 17:39They are high priests. They have the holy order of God.
- 17:43I don't think though, that it necessarily means that they are
- 17:47only men because we are taught that there are priestesses who
- 17:53serve in the temple. That we'll find out in the next
- 17:56life, I'm sure. Another reason why I think that
- 17:59perhaps it's also priestesses included in that is because of
- 18:03thinking that Paul taught. Do you remember in First
- 18:05Corinthians Chapter 11, verse 11?
- 18:07He said, nevertheless, neither is the man without the woman,
- 18:11neither the woman without the man in the Lord, in the Lord's
- 18:16Kingdom, in our heavenly temples you have to have companionship,
- 18:21and the two are integral and and one is not without the other,
- 18:25and if they have to be together to be joint heirs, I I assume
- 18:29that that refers to both. The Prophet Joseph also spoke on
- 18:32this in a sermon in Nauvoo. He said it is not only necessary
- 18:37that you should be baptized for your dead, but you will have to
- 18:40go through all the ordinances for them the same as you have
- 18:44gone through to save yourselves. And there will be 144,000
- 18:49saviours on Mount Zion and with them an innumerable host.
- 18:53That's why I said, I don't think it's a limiting number.
- 18:56There's going to be an innumerable host that no man can
- 19:00number. Oh, I beseech you to go forward
- 19:04and make your calling an election.
- 19:05Sure. You know, Joseph taught this.
- 19:07Peter taught it in his epistles. This is our highest ordinances
- 19:13that are given to those who have qualified and lived worthy of
- 19:18their temple covenants. Most of us will receive this
- 19:22ordinance in the next life, but some do receive it in this life.
- 19:26Chapter 7, verse nine. A great multitude that no one
- 19:30could count from every nation, tribe, people, language,
- 19:32standing before the throne and then continuing on, he describes
- 19:37in verse 13 one of the elders asked me these in the white
- 19:40robes, who are they and where did they come from?
- 19:44And you know, John says, I don't know, you tell me, And he
- 19:46answers in verse 14. These are they who have come out
- 19:50of great tribulation. They have washed their robes and
- 19:54made them white in the blood of the lamb.
- 19:56That's the NIV translation. And I am so grateful that during
- 20:00our times of struggle, our times of trial, our times of great
- 20:04tribulation, we can fall on our knees and be strengthened by the
- 20:08Lord. And that.
- 20:10Falling on our knees is part of the process of purification, of
- 20:14sanctification, of becoming holy.
- 20:17You know I we are not people who believe you should seek trials,
- 20:22that you should go out and seek tribulations.
- 20:24And and we don't go around flogging ourselves and cutting
- 20:27ourselves, but we believe strongly that when we are
- 20:31physically and emotionally weak, God can strengthen us.
- 20:35Our weaknesses can become strengths through the miraculous
- 20:39healing and intervention of our Saviour.
- 20:41And I can testify that I believe in a God of miracles.
- 20:44And I have seen this happen in my life.
- 20:47Chapter 17 has some beautiful imagery.
- 20:50I just love the symbols here and I'll read it from the NIV.
- 20:54The Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd
- 20:58and he will lead them to the springs of living water and God
- 21:02will wipe away every tear from their eye.
- 21:06This is going to be a happy day, but until then, chapter 8 says
- 21:10the seal is still being opened. The 7th seal.
- 21:13When he opened the 7th seal there was silence in the heaven
- 21:18for about 1/2 an hour. Now I've heard lots of people's
- 21:21speculations both in the church and out of the church, and I
- 21:24would encourage you not to speculate.
- 21:27Spend your time on building the Kingdom instead of worthless
- 21:31speculations on what this half hour of silence is.
- 21:34And I have heard a whole bunch of them and none of them make
- 21:37any sense to me. I think God has a much broader
- 21:40view on this and I'm waiting to get light knowledge from Him.
- 21:44We do not know what that half hour meant, no matter how many
- 21:47clever people think they figured it out.
- 21:50I think we can patiently wait and and move ahead, but there is
- 21:53some period of silence after the opening of the 7th seal.
- 21:57We are introduced to 7 angels now, and these seven angels are
- 22:00bringing the seven horrific plagues.
- 22:03Many of those plagues line up with the plagues that Moses used
- 22:07against the Egyptians. So much of the Old Testament is
- 22:10paralleled at the end of times, just as we see in the Book of
- 22:13Mormon as well. In chapter 8, verse 7, the first
- 22:17plague is hail and blood and fire.
- 22:19The next plague, chapter 8, verse 9 to 10, the sea becomes
- 22:24filled with fire and parts of the sea life are all killed.
- 22:28And then chapter 8, verse 10 to 11 and verse 3, there's this
- 22:32fiery star in the bitter water. The next plague, #4, is still in
- 22:36chapter 8, verses 12 and 13. That's when the sun and the moon
- 22:40are and the stars are darkened. The 5th plague is now in Chapter
- 22:449, verses one and two, and they talk about the bottomless pit is
- 22:47opened in Satan's temptations. You know, they go into great
- 22:50detail on some of these. They're just horrific.
- 22:53Chapter 9 verses 12 to 19 is the 6th plague.
- 22:56And it's talking about the smoke that's going to kill and the
- 22:59brimstone and the fire that's going to come.
- 23:02And then the last plague, this lightning and Thunder and the
- 23:05greatest earthquake that we know.
- 23:07It starts in Chapter 11, but then it continues on in Chapter
- 23:1016. Because remember, we have some
- 23:12flashbacks. So we'll talk about the rest of
- 23:14this 7th plague next week in our come.
- 23:16Follow me. I'm fascinated that Moses.
- 23:19Plagues included the hail fire, the water turning to blood, the
- 23:23bitter water, the Wormwood, the sunbeam darkened, and the
- 23:26bottomless pit of death. You know, all of these were
- 23:29familiar images to the Israelites, and they should have
- 23:32recognized them as this is happening to the wicked.
- 23:34But you remember when Moses sends these plagues out that
- 23:37they do not all affect the children of Israel.
- 23:41Those that were living in Goshen and living close to their God
- 23:45were removed from those, especially on the 10th plague.
- 23:47Do you remember when the blood of the lamb for the Passover was
- 23:51to be painted on the doorpost and the lentil so that the
- 23:53destroying Angel would pass by? That is what the Book of
- 23:57Revelation describes. This is how John describes it's
- 24:00going to happen to the Saints in the last days, that they can be
- 24:02removed from some of these disasters, but not all of them.
- 24:06It says in Chapter 9, verse one. And the fifth Angel sounded and
- 24:11I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth and to him was
- 24:15given a key to the bottomless pit.
- 24:17Well, it's a good thing we've got section 77 there and in
- 24:21verse 12 we're described this is Satan continuing on in
- 24:25Revelation Chapter 9, verse four.
- 24:27It says do not hurt those men. And I assume that this means
- 24:31those brethren, those men and women who are Saints of God,
- 24:36which have the seal of God on their forehead.
- 24:39But remember, the Holy Spirit of promise is given to us in our
- 24:43ordinances to confirm that they're done with proper
- 24:46authority and that our heart is in the right place.
- 24:48But just because we've been baptized, we've checked that box
- 24:52does not mean that we have our ordinances and our confirmation
- 24:57from God intact. The Holy Spirit of promise will
- 24:59not allow hypocrisy. There's no guile that will be
- 25:03allowed into heaven. So if we want to be reserved
- 25:06from some of these tragedies of the last day, we have to honor
- 25:10our covenants. And remember, our prophet said
- 25:12the time is running out, We need to do it now.
- 25:16Moving ahead now to Chapter 10, John now leaves the history of
- 25:20the world and says, I've got to talk to you about my mission
- 25:22call. So we get one of these
- 25:23intermissions, one of these flashbacks, verse 10 of Chapter
- 25:2710. I took the little book out of
- 25:30the angel's hand and ate it up, and it was in my mouth, sweet as
- 25:35honey, and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.
- 25:40So John is commanded to partake of this scroll.
- 25:44But it has a very interesting effect and I just think
- 25:48sometimes that's how it is for us.
- 25:50We're eager to go and serve, but it gets hard and we do not want
- 25:54to stay there and it feels miserable.
- 25:57Well, the message of John the Beloved is you keep serving.
- 26:02If you agreed to take that mission, you continue to serve.
- 26:05The Lord gives us an explanation on that in section 77, verse 14.
- 26:09What are we to understand by the little book which was eaten by
- 26:13John? And the Lord tells him it was a
- 26:16mission, an ordinance. Isn't that interesting?
- 26:20The ordinance for him to gather the tribes of Israel.
- 26:25Behold, this is Elias who is written must come and restore
- 26:29all things. This is fascinating to me
- 26:31because many times we call Elias other people.
- 26:34But right here we are told John the Baptist is one of those
- 26:39Eliases and his role in the latter days, since he is staying
- 26:42on the earth from the time of the Lord's death all the way
- 26:46through until the Lord's second coming is to gather Israel.
- 26:50This is just fascinating to me. He is the one who is
- 26:54orchestrating all this. So when the prophets recently
- 26:57said our most important work is to gather Israel, I feel like we
- 27:02are serving with John, We are doing God's work, and we are
- 27:05part of this great closing up of the seven seals before the
- 27:10Millennium. We go back now to the history
- 27:14chronologically. After the flashback to Chapter
- 27:1711 and Chapter 11 describes these two witnesses, I'd like to
- 27:21read from this Section 77 of the doctrine commence in verse 15.
- 27:25They are two prophets that are to be raised up to the Jewish
- 27:28nation in the last days and at the time of the Restoration, and
- 27:33to prophecy to the Jews after they are gathered and have built
- 27:37their city of Jerusalem in the land of their forefathers.
- 27:40We have some fascinating information on these two
- 27:42witnesses. You know they're going to seal
- 27:44the heavens. You know, in the Book of
- 27:46Revelation, they're described as two trees, these two strong
- 27:50people. But in the Book of Revelation,
- 27:52John himself gives a definition of what a prophet is.
- 27:56This is in chapter 19, verse 10. I think he said a prophet is one
- 27:59who has a testimony of Jesus Christ.
- 28:02Now other people have assumed, oh, these are going to be
- 28:04members of the 12. Well, maybe, but that is not
- 28:08John's definition of the word. So if they are wonderful, we'll
- 28:12recognize them. We'll know when those 3 1/2
- 28:13years start. But if they are not, if they are
- 28:17people who have a testimony that Jesus of Nazareth was the
- 28:20promised Messiah and the Savior of the world, it'll be a little
- 28:23bit harder to identify them. But sooner or later, the whole
- 28:26world knows about them because they're so obnoxious in what
- 28:29they're doing, and they are, and they are directing horrific
- 28:32warfare. And they are are very powerful
- 28:35people. And we read about them not only
- 28:36here in the Book of Revelation, but elsewhere in the scriptures
- 28:39as well. Chapter 12 now describes this
- 28:42beautiful woman who represents the church.
- 28:45There appeared a great sign in heaven, in the likeness of
- 28:48things on the earth, a woman clothed with the sun and the
- 28:51moon under her feet. So he says, I'm going to try to
- 28:53describe it to things you know. And on her head was a crown of
- 28:5612 stars. Being with child, she cried
- 28:59travailing in birth. So she is going through the
- 29:03labour pain. She's the church and she's
- 29:05trying to deliver something and she's crying out in pain.
- 29:08And then we're introduced in chapter 12, verse four to her
- 29:13adversary and it's a dragon. The Dragon's tail drew the third
- 29:17part of the stars of Heaven. Now I'm not exactly sure what
- 29:20that means, but I assume that it might refer to the third of the
- 29:23hosts of Heaven that were followed Lucifer and and did not
- 29:28choose to come to Earth and receive their bodies.
- 29:31And it a third in the ancient world does not mean 33%.
- 29:34You know, .33333 it's a it's a portion.
- 29:38But continuing on in verse four, it says that the dragon stood
- 29:41before the woman which was ready to be delivered for to devour
- 29:45her child as soon as it was born.
- 29:48So the church is trying to gather Israel trying to build
- 29:51the king of God and Satan is right there working on it.
- 29:55Verse 7 continues on in chapter 12.
- 29:57So here's one of his flashbacks. He says, oh I've got to
- 30:00introduce who the devil is. OK, so let's go back to the pre
- 30:04mortal life. Before all this happened there
- 30:07was a war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought
- 30:10against the dragon and his angels.
- 30:13Now we're taught in the Restoration that Michael was
- 30:17Adam, and premortally, Adam fought against Lucifer and
- 30:23gathered the righteous to follow our Savior.
- 30:26This is added on in restored scripture.
- 30:29But this is a powerful message here, but no one else
- 30:32understands it like we do because they don't have the keys
- 30:35that we've been given in the Restoration.
- 30:38In these next few chapters, 12/13, we are introduced to
- 30:41three satanic beasts. I want to make sure that you
- 30:45know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.
- 30:47It's referred to sometimes in scholarship as a Satanic
- 30:50Trinity. They're in opposition to the
- 30:53Godhead. They're counterfeits.
- 30:55There's the red dragon, who's the devil?
- 30:57There's the sea beast who represents the great and
- 31:00abominable church in chapter 13, verse one.
- 31:03And then there's a land beast. And he's got all these horns.
- 31:05He's the Antichrist, so don't get him mixed up because horns
- 31:09can be power or horns can be wickedness.
- 31:11But all of these three wicked beasts have power.
- 31:13That's part of the problem. Chapter 13 describes those who
- 31:17follow these three beasts also, and I'll read a little bit here,
- 31:20in chapter 13, verse 12, it says that there are people who
- 31:24receive power from the devil. And then in chapter 13, verses
- 31:2813 to 14, they are deceived by the wonders.
- 31:32And then in verse 16 the beast will mark his followers.
- 31:36These wicked followers are going to have a marking on them.
- 31:39And in verse 17 he commences to govern by him.
- 31:43The wicked are being governed by this beast who have the mark.
- 31:47Now Joseph spoke a little bit on this too.
- 31:49He says there are those who are marked with the beast and there
- 31:53are those who are marked with the seal of God.
- 31:56The Father's name is written on their foreheads.
- 32:00They spoke on this again on August 13th, 1843, where it says
- 32:04that they shall seal the servants of God in their
- 32:06foreheads, etcetera. It means to seal the blessings
- 32:11on their heads, meaning the everlasting covenant, thereby
- 32:15making their calling an election.
- 32:17Sure. Now Joseph is often referred to
- 32:20as the permanent sealing of the Holy Spirit of promise that we
- 32:23read about in sections 132 and 76 and 124.
- 32:27But there is also a period of time where we are sealed.
- 32:31If we live, the law and the conditional time of the Spirit
- 32:36can teach us and help us become more Christ.
- 32:38Like in chapter 14 we see a change of scene and I think
- 32:42you'll recognize verse six and seven.
- 32:44I saw another Angel fly in the midst of heaven having the
- 32:48everlasting gospel. This we believe as a
- 32:53representation of Angel Moroni, of Peter, James and John, of
- 32:57John the Baptist. You know of all the angels, the
- 33:01many, many angels that have come back to the earth to minister.
- 33:04And we believe there are now many, many ministering of angels
- 33:07in our temples, in our homes, in our churches as we go through
- 33:11our life, as we're striving to live connected to the Lord.
- 33:14I believe there are ministration of angels around us.
- 33:18I have felt them in my life. But he says that the harvest of
- 33:22the earth is ripe, and that phrase is also used many times
- 33:26in the early sections of Doctrine Covenants.
- 33:28The field is white, all ready for harvest.
- 33:30The gathering of Israel has commenced.
- 33:32We're in that half hour of silence.
- 33:35And when the 7th seal is opened and the Lord is telling John
- 33:40that there is going to be a great gathering of Israel, in
- 33:44chapter 15 we are introduced to seven more angels who now bring
- 33:49the seven plagues. These are the worst destruction
- 33:53that have been discussed yet in the history of the world.
- 33:56They are horrific, and from chapters 15, verse 1 to 8, they
- 34:01talk about them. It's sort of interesting to see
- 34:04in the midst of these seven plagues coming down to the earth
- 34:07that the earth is described as a sea of glass.
- 34:10This is in chapter 15, verse 2. As you recall back in the vision
- 34:13of the throne of God in chapter four it was described the same
- 34:16way. And it will be described that
- 34:18way again when we get to the end when the earth is in its para
- 34:21disciple glory. But this is interesting that
- 34:24even at this time there is a clarity.
- 34:27You can see God in heaven, the angels can see the earth
- 34:30differently. Perhaps is one way of
- 34:32interpreting it. First five and six reads in the
- 34:35NIVI looked and I saw the heavens, the temple that is the
- 34:40Tabernacle of the covenant law, and it was opened and out of the
- 34:45temple came seven angels with 7 plagues and they were dressed in
- 34:49clean shining linen and they wore golden sashes around their
- 34:54chest. These beautiful angels have a
- 34:57role to play and even though it is a horrific role, I want you
- 35:01to remember that everything God does, his entire plan is all for
- 35:05our good. It's all for our growth.
- 35:08His glory is our immortality and eternal life, and sometimes I
- 35:12think it's necessary to remove us from the wickedness and the
- 35:15blindness and the poison that we're living in, in our society
- 35:19to another place where we can repent and learn in a different
- 35:23environment. So even though they're horrific
- 35:26times of death and destruction, it is still a merciful God who
- 35:31is removing his children from a place of danger where the
- 35:35adversary is so powerful and allowing them to learn again in
- 35:39heaven. Verse 7 says that one of the
- 35:41four beasts, or these living creatures around the throne of
- 35:44God gave unto the seven angels 7 golden vials full of the wrath
- 35:51of God. And then it says that he sees
- 35:53the heavenly temple again. This is chapter 15, verse eight.
- 35:56And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and
- 35:59from His power. Well, I hope that rings a bell
- 36:02for you for the incense alters, because the smoke coming from
- 36:05the incense was to go day and night as the prayers of our
- 36:09Lord. The book of Hebrews also talks
- 36:11about this. And next week we'll get together
- 36:14to talk about 16. And chapter 16 is going to start
- 36:17the seven plagues and the action call from heaven that will lead
- 36:21up to the second coming. And then we'll get the second
- 36:24coming of the Lord and the Millennium and the celestialized
- 36:27earth and the glorified state. What a blessing it is to live in
- 36:32a day and age where we have a prophet in the land where we can
- 36:36follow the prophet and be saved from some of these calamities.
- 36:39But the best thing we can do to prepare for the last days is to
- 36:44gather Israel, to learn the language of the Lord, to come
- 36:47unto Christ, to build his Kingdom, and to prepare a Zion
- 36:51society so that he might come. We can cut the calamity short,
- 36:56which we'll talk about next week.
- 36:58In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
