- 0:01Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:05Speaker 1: two five Pro Football.
- 0:07Speaker 2: The insider I've covered, while.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Jeff Legwald he's the balloon popper. He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Drought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 1: IBDW Local sixty eight. Start with the JOm and with
- 0:19Speaker 1: the career. It's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five.
- 0:30Speaker 1: The headline right now on ESPN dot com sources Broncos
- 0:35Speaker 1: to release wide receiver Tim Patrick if no trade. Broncos
- 0:41Speaker 1: to release wide receiver Tim Patrick if no trade, if
- 0:48Speaker 1: done right, no can defend joining us right now.
- 0:51Speaker 3: So they say till the next movie.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald of ESPN, Uh, Leggy, why are the Broncos
- 0:58Speaker 1: doing this with Tim Patrick?
- 1:00Speaker 2: But I guess you know, and we've alluded to this,
- 1:04Speaker 2: you know when I've been with you guys before that
- 1:07Speaker 2: you know, when they drafted Devon Bailey, they immediately said
- 1:12Speaker 2: he's like Tim Patrick. So to me, that's sort of
- 1:15Speaker 2: when the clock started on all this. And it's not
- 1:19Speaker 2: that they don't think Tim Patrick doesn't have a you know,
- 1:23Speaker 2: a place in the locker room, an important place or
- 1:25Speaker 2: even in the offense. It's at this point they got
- 1:31Speaker 2: more guys they liked than spots they have available. And
- 1:36Speaker 2: Tim Patrick doesn't play special teams, you know, at this
- 1:39Speaker 2: point after two years of injury rehab to come back.
- 1:43Speaker 2: So I think that's all just part of it. Again,
- 1:46Speaker 2: there there is trade interest. I've spoken with a couple
- 1:51Speaker 2: of other gms you know, around the league, and they
- 1:55Speaker 2: say they you know, they hear there's there's trade interest
- 2:00Speaker 2: than kid Patrick. So it's just a matter of what
- 2:03Speaker 2: if something can be worked out. And I get you know,
- 2:06Speaker 2: there's always in these cases, there's always you know, the
- 2:10Speaker 2: the reprieve from the governor, so to speak at some
- 2:13Speaker 2: point and they make different decisions. But right now, the
- 2:17Speaker 2: Broncos plan is to it They'll try to get a
- 2:21Speaker 2: trade and find them a place and they get something
- 2:25Speaker 2: in return, and if that doesn't work out, then they
- 2:28Speaker 2: would release him.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Well, the other one you called, you've been calling it
- 2:32Speaker 3: for two weeks now is they may shop p Ryan.
- 2:34Speaker 3: What do you think is going on there?
- 2:36Speaker 2: Same thing? Andy got not enough spots available, and I
- 2:42Speaker 2: thought it was pretty clear last night when they basically
- 2:45Speaker 2: treated Estimate like a starter almost you know, just one
- 2:52Speaker 2: series or a very short cameo in the game, and
- 2:56Speaker 2: Samaji p Ryan wasn't even in uniform. And I think
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, to me, if you're a veteran player and
- 3:03Speaker 2: you're not in uniform for the last preseason game and
- 3:06Speaker 2: you're not a starter, that's from teamly a bad sign.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Talking to Jeff Lakewald here on a Monday afternoon Jeff
- 3:13Speaker 1: Lakewald brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical
- 3:15Speaker 1: Workers ibe W Local sixty eight. Start with a job
- 3:18Speaker 1: and with the career LEGI I guess my initial surprise
- 3:22Speaker 1: at the Tim Patrick Cutt was how well he connected
- 3:27Speaker 1: with bo Nicks in the Green Bay game. He had
- 3:29Speaker 1: four catches in that game, he had that touchdown. You
- 3:32Speaker 1: would think, okay, rookie quarterback needs the the security of
- 3:36Speaker 1: a solid veteran receiver. We have seen Tim Patrick kind
- 3:40Speaker 1: of be that security blanket before for other quarterbacks in
- 3:44Speaker 1: a Bronco uniform. Do you believe it was the you know,
- 3:48Speaker 1: the the return from injury or was it simply this
- 3:53Speaker 1: team was like, Hey, it's time to get younger and cheaper,
- 3:55Speaker 1: because that's what we are right now.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Probably all of the above. Yeah, honestly, I mean it's
- 4:01Speaker 2: again they took. They used two draft picks in April
- 4:04Speaker 2: on wide receivers, and I think their feeling was they
- 4:08Speaker 2: weren't going to risk either one of those guys in waivers.
- 4:13Speaker 2: So even if the two rookies aren't in the sort
- 4:17Speaker 2: of top five or six at the position group, you know,
- 4:22Speaker 2: it ain't always a meritocracy in how these things work out.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And I thought Tim had a great camp, and you know,
- 4:30Speaker 2: to me, he's still uh, he's still going to be
- 4:34Speaker 2: missed in the locker room if this doesn't work out
- 4:37Speaker 2: as and it doesn't appear like it will. So it's
- 4:41Speaker 2: an important piece in the locker room in terms of
- 4:43Speaker 2: a toughness factor. And if I'm a quarterback, I always
- 4:48Speaker 2: want guys who fights for the ball like Tim Patrick
- 4:51Speaker 2: does on every single play. So yeah, this is this
- 4:55Speaker 2: is not a move without a cost. There's a price
- 4:57Speaker 2: tag here, and I think the price tag is other
- 5:02Speaker 2: people are gonna have to be, you know, tough in
- 5:04Speaker 2: the locker room, and the two rookies especially. You know,
- 5:09Speaker 2: I think Devon Vley has played his way onto the team, uh,
- 5:14Speaker 2: with with how he spent and in training camp in
- 5:16Speaker 2: the preseason. I think Troy Franklin is the one they're
- 5:20Speaker 2: they're hoping they get a little more of what they
- 5:23Speaker 2: saw in the in the preseason finale and and this
- 5:25Speaker 2: past week.
- 5:26Speaker 1: What does this then do for those bubble receivers? Your
- 5:30Speaker 1: Lil Jordan Humphreys, Brandon Johnson's, Jalen Virgils, David Sills is
- 5:35Speaker 1: of the world. I don't know why we pluralize these guys,
- 5:38Speaker 1: but what does it do for them?
- 5:40Speaker 2: Bye? I think, you know, Humphrey is one of Peyton's.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I mean, he likes Humphrey as a player. So I
- 5:48Speaker 2: think that spot is probably Humphrey or Johnson, and they're
- 5:52Speaker 2: you know, those are if if they keep six, you know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: I think it comes down to those two for that
- 5:59Speaker 2: last spot.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Any other big surprises in the offing? I mean, what
- 6:04Speaker 3: do you think happens with Jared Stidham. You know, I
- 6:06Speaker 3: guess he went on Instagram to try to, you know,
- 6:08Speaker 3: put the old Kumbaya or iron sharpens iron post together
- 6:12Speaker 3: after being a little salty in the locker room yesterday.
- 6:16Speaker 3: And so that feels like maybe a little bit of
- 6:18Speaker 3: a my bad. But you've said you think they keep three.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Could they be shopping one of the quarterbacks and could
- 6:26Speaker 3: there be like, is there a veteran surprise still coming
- 6:30Speaker 3: or is Tim Patrick gonna be as big as it gets?
- 6:33Speaker 2: You know, it's hard to say any mean, they don't
- 6:35Speaker 2: have many tougher decisions than at running back and wide receiver,
- 6:40Speaker 2: So unless they're just making money moves, I don't think
- 6:46Speaker 2: there's an enormous surprise at least right now. I mean,
- 6:49Speaker 2: they've got a whole day yet here to you know,
- 6:52Speaker 2: to figure all this out. But you know, Sean Payton
- 6:55Speaker 2: was adamant after the game last night that they've got
- 6:58Speaker 2: the money to do what they want, you know, meaning
- 7:02Speaker 2: salary cap space. And he was talking about Stidham when
- 7:06Speaker 2: he made that comment. So now, I guess on the
- 7:10Speaker 2: Stidham thing, I always come down with, I ge't you know,
- 7:16Speaker 2: players are going to embrace their teammates and everything, but
- 7:18Speaker 2: I don't think the guy should ever be excited about
- 7:21Speaker 2: losing a competition or position battle. You know, I don't
- 7:26Speaker 2: blame him for being a little salty, and I don't
- 7:29Speaker 2: think the team does either. Frankly, But if someone gave
- 7:32Speaker 2: them a good offer and you know, took that contract,
- 7:38Speaker 2: I'm sure in the Broncos would consider it. But if
- 7:41Speaker 2: no good offers come. They're keeping all three and Sean
- 7:44Speaker 2: Paton has said as much. So unless he changes his
- 7:47Speaker 2: mind in the next twenty two hours, I think they're
- 7:50Speaker 2: keeping three quarterbacks.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Talking to Jeff Legwald here on a Monday afternoon, how
- 7:56Speaker 1: does that work? Exactly? Like, what's the plan with the
- 7:59Speaker 1: three quarterback because obviously there's gonna be scout team working,
- 8:02Speaker 1: you know, you but but you know, Zach Wilson is
- 8:06Speaker 1: a guy we saw him yesterday. Man, the longer he
- 8:08Speaker 1: played in that game, the more comfortable that he got.
- 8:10Speaker 1: A guy that just absolutely is gonna have to have
- 8:13Speaker 1: reps as a part of his sort of rehab from
- 8:15Speaker 1: his time there with the New York Jets. How are
- 8:17Speaker 1: they gonna pardon the pun here, Leggie, how are they
- 8:21Speaker 1: gonna juggle these three quarterbacks?
- 8:24Speaker 2: You know, it's it's someone will not end each week
- 8:29Speaker 2: thinking they got enough work. I think that's just the
- 8:32Speaker 2: bottom line there. There aren't that many snaps to go around.
- 8:36Speaker 2: But you know, somebody's gonna get a lot of reps
- 8:39Speaker 2: against the Bronco defense, and you know one of them
- 8:42Speaker 2: will get a few reps as the backup that week,
- 8:45Speaker 2: and they may even switch the back up around you know,
- 8:49Speaker 2: with either you know, we might see it or we
- 8:52Speaker 2: might not, you know what I mean, they might just
- 8:54Speaker 2: do all of those things in the walkthroughs and that
- 8:58Speaker 2: type of thing. But I've said all along, they like
- 9:02Speaker 2: all three and he Sean Payton really thinks there's something
- 9:07Speaker 2: there with with Zach Wilson, and it would not stun
- 9:10Speaker 2: me at the end of the season if they try
- 9:12Speaker 2: to work out some kind of deal, you know, for
- 9:17Speaker 2: for Wilson to stay here in some fashion to keep
- 9:19Speaker 2: working with him, you know, unless for some reason he
- 9:24Speaker 2: gets in in place this year and ends up with
- 9:26Speaker 2: some kind of Gardner Minshew kind of offer at the
- 9:29Speaker 2: end of the year. But they like them, and they
- 9:34Speaker 2: and the talent. You know, I don't, I don't. You
- 9:37Speaker 2: don't have to know much about football. I don't think
- 9:39Speaker 2: to see, uh, there's a talent level there and an
- 9:43Speaker 2: ability to make a thrower to the other two guys can't,
- 9:46Speaker 2: and that separates him from the other two no matter
- 9:50Speaker 2: what the depth chart looks like. So I think they
- 9:53Speaker 2: want to continue to look at that and see what
- 9:55Speaker 2: that can be down the road.
- 9:56Speaker 3: You've done this, You've done this a long time, So
- 10:00Speaker 3: tell you what. We have a texter asked this. My
- 10:02Speaker 3: answer is you want everybody to know just to try
- 10:05Speaker 3: to get some offers coming out. But the texter does ask,
- 10:08Speaker 3: and I think it's a fair question. Why does a
- 10:10Speaker 3: team ever let the rest of the league know, through
- 10:13Speaker 3: insiders or whatever outlet they choose, that they're trying to
- 10:17Speaker 3: let a guy go that they're looking they're gonna cut
- 10:19Speaker 3: him if they don't get a good trade value. Is
- 10:21Speaker 3: that to try to get somebody with poor waiver claim
- 10:24Speaker 3: position to jump up at that person or what is
- 10:26Speaker 3: the point of that, because it does seem counterintuitive to
- 10:29Speaker 3: tell the whole league we're going to cut a guy
- 10:32Speaker 3: that you may want to try to get for free.
- 10:34Speaker 3: What's the thinking there.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Jeff Well, that Andy that Patrick and p Ryan are
- 10:41Speaker 2: veteran players, they're vested players, they have more than four
- 10:45Speaker 2: seasons in the league, and those players are free agents
- 10:49Speaker 2: after cuts. They don't go through waivers right now. Veteran
- 10:54Speaker 2: players don't go through waivers until after the trade deadline,
- 10:57Speaker 2: so the player has the choice of when he's released.
- 11:01Speaker 2: So a trade enables a team to essentially force the choice,
- 11:06Speaker 2: Like if they don't think the player might pick them,
- 11:10Speaker 2: you know, if they're up against other people, or they
- 11:13Speaker 2: just want the player right now and not want to
- 11:15Speaker 2: have to worry about if he's got other choices. That's
- 11:18Speaker 2: that's why you would do that, because you're any team
- 11:22Speaker 2: really interested is going to want to handle the choice
- 11:24Speaker 2: right now and not let the player get into the
- 11:27Speaker 2: open market.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Yeah, it's have somebody want them and maybe offer you
- 11:32Speaker 1: something better than the other guys. The old bidding war
- 11:35Speaker 1: is what they're trying to get going right there. We're
- 11:37Speaker 1: talking to Jeff Lagwold here on a Monday afternoon. The
- 11:40Speaker 1: preseason is in the books. We go on now to
- 11:43Speaker 1: the start of the regular season and really the real
- 11:46Speaker 1: beginning of the bow Knicks era right now, Like when
- 11:49Speaker 1: you think about improvement that the team wants to see
- 11:53Speaker 1: something tangible between Okay, you played the Green Bay game
- 11:57Speaker 1: in preseason game number two, now you getting ready for
- 12:00Speaker 1: week one against Seattle. You know, development is not always linear.
- 12:05Speaker 1: You don't automatically just get better on a weekend, week
- 12:07Speaker 1: out basis. But given what we saw in a couple
- 12:10Speaker 1: of preseason games and this camp, what is the next
- 12:13Speaker 1: step forward now for Bonnicks.
- 12:16Speaker 2: It's all pre snap now. Yeah, you're gonna get coverage disguises.
- 12:22Speaker 2: You're gonna get roll up safeties, you're gonna get rotating
- 12:26Speaker 2: you know everything. You're gonna get odd fronts, you're gonna
- 12:30Speaker 2: get rushers dropping in and being added at your The
- 12:37Speaker 2: amount of information you're gonna have to sift through before
- 12:40Speaker 2: the snap will now multiply by ten. I mean, uh,
- 12:45Speaker 2: you know, Green Bay and Indie you got almost you
- 12:48Speaker 2: know that that was like finger painting for a quarterback
- 12:52Speaker 2: as far as the pre snap looks. And I'll say
- 12:57Speaker 2: Bonnicks did not get a great draw for the first
- 13:00Speaker 2: two opponents. I mean, both those coaches are known for
- 13:06Speaker 2: messing around before the snap and the pass rushing coverage looks.
- 13:10Speaker 2: And that's that's gonna be a pretty big hurdle for
- 13:15Speaker 2: Bonix right out of the gate. He does not get
- 13:17Speaker 2: a nice, you know, taxi out to the runway, so
- 13:22Speaker 2: to speak. He's got two tough defensive play callers who
- 13:28Speaker 2: are very good at the sguise right out of the gate.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Jeff Sean Payton has said, I will use the waiver
- 13:34Speaker 3: wire to try to prove some positions. Basically, he's made
- 13:37Speaker 3: a couple of comments in the last week that there
- 13:39Speaker 3: are a couple places where they might pick some people up.
- 13:42Speaker 3: My guest would be offensive line. Where would you think
- 13:45Speaker 3: they might search to bolster the roster?
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Gorne. And you know, if they don't
- 13:52Speaker 2: think they have a short term corner option because of
- 13:55Speaker 2: the massis, that's going to be several weeks. So if
- 13:59Speaker 2: they want to term corner option, maybe there too. But
- 14:03Speaker 2: I've pulled some personnel guys around the league and nobody
- 14:07Speaker 2: thinks there will be many impact linemen available on the
- 14:12Speaker 2: waiver wire, and the ones that are will probably be
- 14:16Speaker 2: snapped up long before the Broncos have the twelfth opportunity
- 14:21Speaker 2: to do it in the waiver order.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald everyone of ESPN, that is where you read
- 14:27Speaker 1: his stuff. His latest on Tim Patrick is up and
- 14:29Speaker 1: available to all of you right now as Denver now
- 14:32Speaker 1: gets set for Seattle in week one before welcoming the
- 14:35Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Steelers to town. Roster cutdowns, leggies all over it, Jeff,
- 14:40Speaker 1: good stuff, buddy, thank you, Thanks, smile as we'll say it.
