- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, Ranger Reid here and Ranger Brook who look at
- 0:05Speaker 1: Ranger Reid.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Welcome to creation nuggets follow us.
- 0:11Speaker 3: The ranger station's just ahead.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Good try, Hugo, aim a little to the left next
- 0:31Speaker 2: time with your bow.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Okay, Ranger Reid, you're good.
- 0:34Speaker 2: At ar tree, just part of my range of skills, Hugo.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I'll fetch that earlier.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Try watch out for anything poisonous. Remember what we talked
- 0:44Speaker 2: about at the nature station yesterday.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Li's a three let it be yes.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I remember that's a good motto unless you're looking at
- 0:51Speaker 2: a strawberry plant.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Rangerie, you're funny, I think my aerofo behind this tree.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Oh, Hugo, stop right there?
- 0:59Speaker 1: What is read?
- 1:01Speaker 2: You are about to put your hand on a poison
- 1:03Speaker 2: ivy vine.
- 1:04Speaker 1: This thick ropelike thing going up the tree. I thought
- 1:07Speaker 1: it was just a neat vine.
- 1:09Speaker 2: No, that's another manifestation of a very adaptable plant. Adaptable
- 1:15Speaker 2: how in the shade it grows tall, in the wind,
- 1:18Speaker 2: it stays small that depending on its environments, this plant
- 1:23Speaker 2: can be anywhere from a tall vine to a thick
- 1:25Speaker 2: ground cover, but all of it has urushio. What take
- 1:28Speaker 2: a look at this leaf here? See the little dark spots.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Those are where the plant's sap has reached air. The
- 1:35Speaker 2: oil in the sap is called eurushiol.
- 1:38Speaker 1: The oil that gets on clothes and gives people rashes
- 1:41Speaker 1: on their skin.
- 1:42Speaker 2: That's the culprit.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Ranger read, why don't we burn up all the poison
- 1:46Speaker 1: ivy then the urushiel? Would it hurt people?
- 1:50Speaker 2: Be careful with that. One fire doesn't destroy urushiol, it
- 1:54Speaker 2: does it not at all. That plant would backfire. The
- 1:57Speaker 2: flames release the oil into the air that we bring,
- 2:00Speaker 2: which can irritate the lungs. Words have a powerful effect
- 2:04Speaker 2: on people too, just like urushiol. Once said, words can
- 2:08Speaker 2: linger for more than days or weeks, but also years.
- 2:12Speaker 1: That's true. I can remember stuff people said from a
- 2:16Speaker 1: long time ago. Uh Ranger, Reid, Hugo, you tripped, you didn't,
- 2:24Speaker 1: I kind of touched the poison ivy.
- 2:26Speaker 3: That's a rash situation.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Run to your cabin. Washing with soap and water during
- 2:30Speaker 2: the first thirty minutes of exposure can cut down your reaction.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I'm nervous.
- 2:35Speaker 2: All of God's creation is amazing, Hugo. Just remember that
- 2:39Speaker 2: some things are better enjoyed from a safe distance.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I'm going to wash up.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Let's hope it clears.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Leafing no trace.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Mountaineers join me, Ranger Reid here in the Discovery Mountain
