- 1:19Speaker 4: this is a legendary edition.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Thanks for having me. Appreciate it. Yeah, appreciate it.
- 1:23Speaker 4: So we got the docu series dropping as far as
- 1:25Speaker 4: the evolution of the black quarterback, so we're going to
- 1:27Speaker 4: get into that. We're going to talk about the NFL.
- 1:29Speaker 4: We're going to talk about the finances. You know, this
- 1:32Speaker 4: is a financial I definitely want to tie in some
- 1:34Speaker 4: money because a lot has changed over the course of
- 1:36Speaker 4: the twenty years when it comes to quarterbacks and just
- 1:38Speaker 4: NFL in general.
- 1:40Speaker 3: But first and foremost, thank you for joining us. Appreciate
- 1:41Speaker 3: it man, Thank you. Man.
- 1:43Speaker 5: I'm glad we ain't doing this at eight o'clock in
- 1:45Speaker 5: the morning.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Ten am. I can function a little bit eight.
- 1:52Speaker 6: So yeah, man, them called the seven thirty makeup and
- 1:56Speaker 6: then seven forty five preps.
- 1:58Speaker 5: All that I go through that enough on Sunday mornings
- 2:02Speaker 5: at Fox.
- 2:03Speaker 3: That's a fact. That's a fact.
- 2:04Speaker 4: So let's talk about it. Let's let's talk about the series.
- 2:06Speaker 4: How did you get involved in it?
- 2:08Speaker 5: Yeah, well, uh, I got involved because for one, you know,
- 2:15Speaker 5: me and my wife and we out or when I'm
- 2:17Speaker 5: out with anybody, any of my friends, people always come
- 2:19Speaker 5: to me and be like, you know, you change the game, man,
- 2:22Speaker 5: And I mean and rightfully so for the you know,
- 2:25Speaker 5: I understand, you know where they're getting at, and and
- 2:28Speaker 5: a part of me believe that you change the game.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Would I always be like, man, you ever seen Charlie Water,
- 2:35Speaker 5: You ever seen Warren Morning?
- 2:37Speaker 3: You ever seen this?
- 2:39Speaker 5: And the answer was always no, Nah, you know, go
- 2:43Speaker 5: google him and you know, get some into And after
- 2:47Speaker 5: a while it was like my wife who she produces,
- 2:50Speaker 5: and she she's involved in production and got her own
- 2:53Speaker 5: share of production going on.
- 2:55Speaker 3: She's like, yo, you should produce a doc where you
- 2:57Speaker 3: just sit down.
- 2:58Speaker 5: With all these quarterbacks that you a mayas so much
- 3:00Speaker 5: since you're telling all these people that you didn't revolutionize
- 3:03Speaker 5: the game or you had some part in revolutionizing the game,
- 3:06Speaker 5: and you know, just being honest, you want to pay homage.
- 3:11Speaker 5: And so this was all about paying homage and really, uh,
- 3:16Speaker 5: you know, just resurfacing the history of the quarterback position,
- 3:20Speaker 5: black quarterbacks in general. How hard we you know, we
- 3:25Speaker 5: had to work a little harder over the years to
- 3:27Speaker 5: try to put ourselves in a position and you know
- 3:30Speaker 5: what I'm saying, be a leader for a franchise, and
- 3:33Speaker 5: I just always felt like it was something that needed
- 3:36Speaker 5: to be done, celebrating the league, celebrating how far we've
- 3:40Speaker 5: come and the opportunities that's been given to us, because
- 3:43Speaker 5: you know, we all took full advantage of it, got
- 3:46Speaker 5: the opportunity.
- 3:47Speaker 6: As you're careating the documentary and doing it, I wonder
- 3:52Speaker 6: at a certain point when you obviously know the history.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yeah, and I've taken a lot of flak.
- 3:57Speaker 6: I'm a Washington fan because of eighty seven and Doug Williams,
- 4:00Speaker 6: the communitists.
- 4:01Speaker 3: For the Commanders.
- 4:02Speaker 6: Now as you're watching it, you're starting to hear people
- 4:06Speaker 6: say that your the reason that they played football. So
- 4:09Speaker 6: now when you're talking to Cam, you're talking to Jalen,
- 4:13Speaker 6: you're talking to Pat Mahomes, Right.
- 4:16Speaker 3: How does that make you feel? Right?
- 4:18Speaker 6: Because you're saying, like, these guys are the guy that
- 4:20Speaker 6: they you should watch, And that's ain't like, no, you're
- 4:23Speaker 6: the guy that we watch.
- 4:24Speaker 5: It's certainly a great level of gratitude and appreciation because
- 4:31Speaker 5: I know you got to have a role model, Like
- 4:33Speaker 5: my role model was Steve Young. I was always looking
- 4:36Speaker 5: at the NFL, and you know, trying to figure out
- 4:39Speaker 5: who I could pattern my game after who looked like me.
- 4:42Speaker 5: You know, that guy just happened to be a white
- 4:44Speaker 5: quarterback who was left handed. They be like, yeah, so
- 4:48Speaker 5: you know Cam and Jalen and Dak, they was all
- 4:51Speaker 5: fortunate to have guys like myself, and you know Donovan
- 4:55Speaker 5: McNabb and you know Jeff Blake and you know Steve McNair.
- 5:00Speaker 5: You know, these guys were, you know, very influential in
- 5:03Speaker 5: our lives and watched everything they do step for step
- 5:07Speaker 5: or they did step for step and just wanted to
- 5:10Speaker 5: emulate what they brung to the field. So to hit
- 5:14Speaker 5: them say that, it's really an honor because I didn't
- 5:18Speaker 5: play the game in the beginning to be a role model.
- 5:23Speaker 5: And I'll be honest about that. I didn't understand that concept.
- 5:26Speaker 5: I was just trying to be the best quarterback that
- 5:28Speaker 5: I could be. But you know, as you grow older
- 5:34Speaker 5: and you started to meet people, and you start to
- 5:36Speaker 5: have football camps, and you know guys like Malik Willis
- 5:40Speaker 5: who came through my camps and you see watch them
- 5:42Speaker 5: ball yesterday.
- 5:42Speaker 3: For Green Bay.
- 5:44Speaker 5: It's like, damn, you know, we really influenced the generation
- 5:47Speaker 5: that come behind us. So you know, I I'm glad
- 5:50Speaker 5: I was able to embrace it as I got older,
- 5:53Speaker 5: And you know, it goes to show that these guys
- 5:56Speaker 5: watched us and they followed us and they're doing it
- 5:58Speaker 5: the right way.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Talk about the evolution, and you know, previously a black
- 6:03Speaker 4: quarterback was an anomaly. Most of the quarterbacks were white,
- 6:07Speaker 4: and there was racial undertones for that as far as
- 6:11Speaker 4: quarterback is the leader of the team, seen as the
- 6:14Speaker 4: most intelligent person a coach on the field. So that
- 6:19Speaker 4: was a stereotype for a long time. And then it
- 6:21Speaker 4: was when black quarterbacks actually did become more popular, it
- 6:25Speaker 4: was only seen as like, well, they'd have to be
- 6:27Speaker 4: a super athletic, right, But now we're seeing a wife
- 6:32Speaker 4: or right. Some quarterbacks are super athletics, some are not
- 6:35Speaker 4: as athletics, Some can throw, some run. So talk about
- 6:38Speaker 4: like from you growing up as a kid to you
- 6:42Speaker 4: being an NFL analyst now, the evolution of how the
- 6:47Speaker 4: game has looked at the black quarterback.
- 6:49Speaker 5: No doubt. As a kid, always heard story is about
- 6:55Speaker 5: the NFL being so complex, like the offense is are
- 6:59Speaker 5: hard to learn, and you know, you know it was
- 7:02Speaker 5: always this stereotype that you know, maybe we couldn't pick
- 7:06Speaker 5: the system up fast enough. I know, you know, it
- 7:09Speaker 5: was something that scared me and made me kind of
- 7:12Speaker 5: deterred me from wanting to pursue playing quarterback. And that's
- 7:15Speaker 5: why I started out at running back. You know, I'm
- 7:17Speaker 5: not really trying to get into that. You know, I'm
- 7:21Speaker 5: a young man and I'm hearing all these things and
- 7:23Speaker 5: I'm like, that's going to derail my chances of making it.
- 7:27Speaker 5: And you know, I just I had a coach that
- 7:30Speaker 5: you know, believed in me, kept pushing me in and
- 7:31Speaker 5: like spent a lot of years feeling like I was
- 7:34Speaker 5: playing a quarterback position for no reason that at some
- 7:36Speaker 5: point I would my position would change. And you know,
- 7:41Speaker 5: I wasted all this time trying to become a quarterback
- 7:44Speaker 5: and the best quarterback that I could be, and you know,
- 7:48Speaker 5: it was just it was it was really tough on
- 7:51Speaker 5: my mental my mental health as far as like you know,
- 7:54Speaker 5: when you're a kid and you expiring to be something,
- 7:57Speaker 5: you only get to do that once and it's not
- 8:00Speaker 5: like that like that don't fluctuate, that don't change like
- 8:03Speaker 5: one day I want to.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Be a professional football player.
- 8:05Speaker 5: In the next day, I want to be a professional
- 8:08Speaker 5: basketball player. The next week now you know, I'm gonna
- 8:10Speaker 5: change and I want to be a doctor. You know,
- 8:12Speaker 5: it don't work like you know, we we be like
- 8:16Speaker 5: like focused on like what it's going to take to
- 8:19Speaker 5: achieve that. And so I'm hearing all these stereotypes as
- 8:22Speaker 5: I get older, and I'm really like shook up about it,
- 8:26Speaker 5: Like damn, man, I don't.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Know which way to go in my life.
- 8:30Speaker 5: And you know, drafts, you know, I'm starting to see
- 8:32Speaker 5: more black quarterbacks into the league here and there, and
- 8:35Speaker 5: I'm like, okay, it's only about three or four of them.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Might even if that, Like I wonder how complex these
- 8:45Speaker 5: offenses are? So part of you know, so stop just
- 8:49Speaker 5: stopping right there. I was like and making this doc
- 8:55Speaker 5: a part of me wanted to find out, like back
- 8:56Speaker 5: in you know, the seventies, was the offense is really
- 8:59Speaker 5: that complay X where a black quarterback couldn't really understand it,
- 9:03Speaker 5: you know, a Marlin Brisco or Jefferson Street Joe. Was
- 9:07Speaker 5: it really so sophisticated that they couldn't lead and they
- 9:12Speaker 5: couldn't compartmentalize all.
- 9:14Speaker 3: These things and run a team.
- 9:17Speaker 5: And so those questions I wanted to get answered in
- 9:21Speaker 5: this dock. I feel like it's still a lot left
- 9:23Speaker 5: to talk about from a standpoint of just gaining an
- 9:27Speaker 5: understanding of how we got to this point, because now
- 9:32Speaker 5: you know those offense League Willis, but Malik Willis got
- 9:37Speaker 5: was with Tennessee and a different obviously a different offense
- 9:41Speaker 5: than Green Bay.
- 9:42Speaker 3: He goes to Green Bay.
- 9:44Speaker 5: Two weeks ago, three weeks ago, he picks this system up.
- 9:48Speaker 5: In three weeks he goes out and win two games
- 9:50Speaker 5: in two weeks.
- 9:51Speaker 3: Well, how complex is it from?
- 9:52Speaker 4: Because I always I played basketball my whole life, and
- 9:55Speaker 4: to me, football was a lot more complicated than complex.
- 9:58Speaker 4: And that's one of the reason why and stop playing football,
- 10:01Speaker 4: because it was you gotta really love it to really
- 10:04Speaker 4: get into the schemes and all of that. And then
- 10:06Speaker 4: you see these quarterbacks with these things on their arm
- 10:08Speaker 4: and then violence.
- 10:11Speaker 3: He left that part out and is violent. That's that's amazing.
- 10:16Speaker 5: But I try not to say that because I don't
- 10:18Speaker 5: like try to.
- 10:19Speaker 4: So, But how how hard is it to act from
- 10:22Speaker 4: from a mental standpoint to master that?
- 10:24Speaker 3: Because it's like a college course in sense it takes time.
- 10:28Speaker 5: I will say that, and I'm gonna continue the reference
- 10:31Speaker 5: Miliite because he's just like fresh on my mind. Malik
- 10:35Speaker 5: goes from Tennessee to Green Bay and it takes him
- 10:41Speaker 5: maybe two weeks. They probably condensed it down, couldn't give
- 10:45Speaker 5: him the whole playbook. He got a smart coach choose
- 10:47Speaker 5: catering to his talents and you know, I'm not going
- 10:50Speaker 5: to throw the whole playbook at.
- 10:51Speaker 3: You all in one in two weeks and it helped.
- 10:55Speaker 5: But those offenses take learning a new offense at least
- 11:00Speaker 5: three and a half months. I say, before you can
- 11:03Speaker 5: be comfortable going out in the field of executing without
- 11:07Speaker 5: giving the game away, doing interceptions or putting the ball
- 11:10Speaker 5: in harm's way. And so you know, all these things
- 11:16Speaker 5: got to come together, and it just creates anxiety. You know,
- 11:21Speaker 5: when you're not comfortable. When you're comfortable and you know
- 11:23Speaker 5: what you're doing, it's a lot easier. And so I
- 11:27Speaker 5: will say this quarterbacks now when they come into the league,
- 11:31Speaker 5: they've worked for so many years with quarterback coaches and
- 11:35Speaker 5: went to all these camps and like Mlik Willis came
- 11:38Speaker 5: to my camp in twenty eighteen, twenty seventeen, twenty eighteen,
- 11:41Speaker 5: won the MVP. He was transferred from Auburn, and so
- 11:46Speaker 5: I'm not taking any credit for what but understanding like
- 11:50Speaker 5: he got off good tootlage that day. You know what
- 11:52Speaker 5: I'm saying From a mental standpoint, I remember talking to
- 11:55Speaker 5: him about, you know, while he was transferring and like
- 11:58Speaker 5: his quarterback journey because you know, usually when it guy transferring,
- 12:01Speaker 5: something's not right.
- 12:02Speaker 3: He ended up at Memphis, he ended up at Liberty, Liberty, Liberty,
- 12:06Speaker 3: and why he killed it. He killed it at Liberty,
- 12:08Speaker 3: and then it was so on and so far.
- 12:09Speaker 5: The supposed to be in the first round pick winning
- 12:11Speaker 5: the third, but you know, you see first round talent.
- 12:14Speaker 6: So this this is interesting because we could stay with
- 12:16Speaker 6: Elik because yes, he grasped the system and they condensed it.
- 12:21Speaker 6: But he's playing behind Jordan Love. Yeah, when you talk
- 12:24Speaker 6: about Jordan Love, you talk about c. J. Stroud, You're
- 12:27Speaker 6: talking about Jay and Daniels Now with Commanders. As I'm watching,
- 12:32Speaker 6: I thought another guy was about Jay. I'm watching this
- 12:36Speaker 6: and I'm thinking to myself and maybe you feel this way.
- 12:40Speaker 6: I feel like you're the most important black quarterback in
- 12:43Speaker 6: the history of the NFL. Eighty seven is important Doug Williams,
- 12:47Speaker 6: but we watched him growing up.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Yeah, as you you talk about the Super.
- 12:50Speaker 6: Bowl two years ago, we would ask you at the
- 12:52Speaker 6: game jailing versus pat first time two black quarterbacks are
- 12:55Speaker 6: playing together in the Super Bowl against each other in
- 12:57Speaker 6: the Super Bowl. That was cool, a culminated moment. You're
- 13:00Speaker 6: looking at the league. Almost every division has a starting
- 13:02Speaker 6: black quarterback, most of Lamar winning two MVPs. That's all
- 13:07Speaker 6: after you played. Yeah, as you're doing it and you're
- 13:10Speaker 6: coming to completion, are you are you start? Because I
- 13:12Speaker 6: think somebody referenced it like you are the most important?
- 13:15Speaker 6: Do you feel that way?
- 13:17Speaker 5: I'm starting to and I'm embracing it, especially after this
- 13:21Speaker 5: quarterback series, And haven't these conversations with all these guys
- 13:25Speaker 5: who we all went through our fair chef the now
- 13:29Speaker 5: trial and tribulation and came out on the other side
- 13:34Speaker 5: of it, some a little more worse than others. I
- 13:37Speaker 5: feel like through my quarterback journey, it was only one
- 13:42Speaker 5: or two moments where I felt like.
- 13:46Speaker 3: I might have been stereotype.
- 13:47Speaker 5: But that might have come from some of my own people,
- 13:51Speaker 5: of my color, black people, And it was weird, you
- 13:57Speaker 5: know what I'm saying. Never had a really had a
- 13:58Speaker 5: white coach tell me like Yo, you to change your position.
- 14:02Speaker 5: So I felt like I came up in a different
- 14:04Speaker 5: era where the belief was there at the time where
- 14:08Speaker 5: it was changing a little bit because of a lot
- 14:10Speaker 5: of these coaches who coached College Boy. They were seeing
- 14:14Speaker 5: Kevin McDougall and Donovan McNabb and they was Charlie Ward.
- 14:19Speaker 5: So from a collegiate standpoint, Yo, you can do it
- 14:23Speaker 5: right here. Next level, you know it's going to take
- 14:27Speaker 5: some decision making, and then you know, the higher ups administration, owners,
- 14:32Speaker 5: general managers, coaches got to make that decision in the NFL.
- 14:37Speaker 5: And in part of doing this doc as I thought
- 14:40Speaker 5: through it, because I felt like, you know, you had to.
- 14:44Speaker 5: It took critical thinking that you just can't make an
- 14:47Speaker 5: evolution of the black quarterback series and not have merit
- 14:50Speaker 5: behind it why you're doing it. And so I really
- 14:53Speaker 5: feel like owners, general managers, the commissioner over the years,
- 14:58Speaker 5: Paul tag Libu, Roger Goodell, they all had a major
- 15:03Speaker 5: part in the evolution of the game in the quarterback
- 15:07Speaker 5: position and why we got so many dual threats because
- 15:10Speaker 5: they had to make those decisions, y'all. I trust you,
- 15:12Speaker 5: Jayden Dames, I trust you jaylen Hurst. I trust you,
- 15:15Speaker 5: Mike Vick. I trust you.
- 15:16Speaker 4: But then also I feel like, so this parallels from
- 15:21Speaker 4: you coming from Newport News and somebody else coming from
- 15:24Speaker 4: Newport News.
- 15:25Speaker 3: You number seven, somebody number three.
- 15:27Speaker 4: His part as what he did is you revolutionized it
- 15:32Speaker 4: from a hip hop perspective too, Like even when you
- 15:35Speaker 4: were in Virginia Tech and I felt like there was
- 15:39Speaker 4: other black quarterbacks before that, but you put the stamp
- 15:42Speaker 4: for like hip hop culture, going to Atlanta, being in
- 15:45Speaker 4: t I's video and swag.
- 15:48Speaker 3: And that's the same Like Ai kind of was the
- 15:50Speaker 3: same tool.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Like as far as what he did to the league,
- 15:52Speaker 4: he obviously wasn't the first black superstar, but he's the
- 15:55Speaker 4: first one with the tattoos, the corn rolls, the baggy clothes.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Was like then that ushered into hip hop era. So
- 16:03Speaker 4: what about how you feel about that as far as
- 16:06Speaker 4: you bringing in that wave of hip hop.
- 16:09Speaker 3: Culture for the for the black quarterback position.
- 16:12Speaker 5: One that started with Alan. You know what I'm saying.
- 16:14Speaker 5: Alan was big bro. So we all watched for Alan.
- 16:18Speaker 4: You know, I'm growing up. Yeah, he was a hell
- 16:20Speaker 4: of a quarterback. Yeah, he was a great quarterbacks.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Player the Year, Yeah, Player of the Year basketball and
- 16:25Speaker 5: then when he went through what he went through, it
- 16:27Speaker 5: was like a really dark time for me because I
- 16:29Speaker 5: was like following his every move and then he come back,
- 16:32Speaker 5: he do all these amazing things, and you know, now
- 16:35Speaker 5: he's just cultural icon, big brother, uh, somebody that we
- 16:41Speaker 5: can look up to and somebody that we can the
- 16:44Speaker 5: strive to be like.
- 16:46Speaker 3: And so that was really cool.
- 16:47Speaker 5: And it's all right to have a guy like Alan,
- 16:51Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying, represent Virginia, you know what
- 16:53Speaker 5: I'm saying, and show its mad love at the same time.
- 16:56Speaker 5: So a lot of what I did from a cultural standpoint,
- 16:59Speaker 5: I following you know, a big bro. And you know,
- 17:04Speaker 5: it was just it was a great moment in a
- 17:05Speaker 5: great time in sports. You know who whatever thought it
- 17:10Speaker 5: looked like I said, it was entertainment, bro. Like what
- 17:14Speaker 5: I A big reason why people gravitated to me and
- 17:17Speaker 5: Island is because we.
- 17:20Speaker 3: We did it different. We did it at a faster pace.
- 17:23Speaker 5: We made it look cool while we was doing it,
- 17:25Speaker 5: even though that's super hard like it was. But that's
- 17:30Speaker 5: you know, the type of you know intensity we brung
- 17:33Speaker 5: to the game, the love we brung to the game.
- 17:35Speaker 5: You can't be great at anything if you don't love it. Yeah,
- 17:38Speaker 5: and so I love football from the bottom of my heart.
- 17:41Speaker 5: From the time I got selected by Atlanta It My
- 17:44Speaker 5: love for the game just grew. When I was at
- 17:46Speaker 5: Virginia Tech, I was learning to play quarterback and learning
- 17:50Speaker 5: how to you know, lead a football team, you know,
- 17:54Speaker 5: from the time to be kicked off until the time
- 17:56Speaker 5: the game was over.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Do you realize did you realize that in real time? Though?
- 18:02Speaker 4: Like, yo, I'm the one that's pushing the culture forward
- 18:05Speaker 4: in this position or is it just happening organically organically?
- 18:09Speaker 3: I couldn't see it. I didn't realize it.
- 18:12Speaker 5: But you know, I was a kid from Newport News,
- 18:15Speaker 5: Virginia who didn't come up with anything. My mom did
- 18:19Speaker 5: the best she could, my dad did the best she could.
- 18:23Speaker 5: And it wasn't a life where I just had everything
- 18:27Speaker 5: I wanted or what I wanted it to be. Like
- 18:29Speaker 5: like I had family members who had everything, and you know,
- 18:32Speaker 5: I used to have to go to their house and
- 18:34Speaker 5: we had to go there to eat and play with
- 18:36Speaker 5: his my cousin's toys, and it was just a you know, togetherness,
- 18:40Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying. But I felt like I
- 18:44Speaker 5: was always in a state where I was probably just
- 18:47Speaker 5: a little bit hungrier literally than everybody around me. You
- 18:51Speaker 5: know what I'm saying, Not necessarily my friends, but you know,
- 18:54Speaker 5: sometimes family. But that's what made me dream hard, and
- 19:00Speaker 5: that's what made me want to go for that goal.
- 19:02Speaker 3: And man, I was growing up.
- 19:04Speaker 5: Like at least I'm gonna shoot for the stars and
- 19:06Speaker 5: if I miss, I'm amongst them.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Leave it at that, you know what I'm saying. Last
- 19:10Speaker 4: question before you answer Nuggert? How good was Could he
- 19:14Speaker 4: have made it to the NBA to the NFL? Of
- 19:15Speaker 4: course he could have made the NFL as a quarterback.
- 19:17Speaker 5: He would have to walk up a little bit, he
- 19:19Speaker 5: had to put on some weight because Alan, he's not
- 19:21Speaker 5: the biggest. But I mean as far as athleticism, he
- 19:25Speaker 5: could have played any position.
- 19:26Speaker 3: He could throw like, yeah he was. Was he faster
- 19:28Speaker 3: than you want to field? Yeah, it's faster than Yeah,
- 19:31Speaker 3: he was a fellow.
- 19:33Speaker 5: I was more quick than fast Alan just Allen just
- 19:36Speaker 5: had that long speed and he was quick like he
- 19:39Speaker 5: had everything. So without a doubt, like he would have.
- 19:42Speaker 5: I envisioned him looking like Charlie Ward in college.
- 19:46Speaker 3: That's a sensitive topic.
- 19:47Speaker 6: Man, Yeah, shot at the f s U. I want
- 19:52Speaker 6: to talk about the importance of the city of Atlanta,
- 19:55Speaker 6: because that I mean, obviously black city. You were coming
- 19:59Speaker 6: in with a news of play, Dan Reeves being your coach, different.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Style of play.
- 20:04Speaker 6: This guy just coached John Elway, right, that that's what
- 20:07Speaker 6: he's known for.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Then he has a new number seven.
- 20:10Speaker 6: Talk about the role of the city of Atlanta embracing
- 20:13Speaker 6: you that number seven, which I think should be retired.
- 20:16Speaker 3: There's two numbers I think should be retired in Falcons history.
- 20:19Speaker 6: One for sure, Yeah, talk about the role that the
- 20:22Speaker 6: city played in embracing you and getting catapulting you to
- 20:24Speaker 6: a superstar stass. But now you got to shoe you
- 20:27Speaker 6: a cover guy on Madden, which was a cheek coode.
- 20:30Speaker 5: But talk about that. I mean, everything I did was
- 20:33Speaker 5: to please the city. From the time I got selected.
- 20:38Speaker 5: Five minutes later, I'm saying to myself, Oh, I can't
- 20:41Speaker 5: let this city down. They're yearning for a star quarterback,
- 20:47Speaker 5: not just a star quarterback. I take that back for
- 20:50Speaker 5: some success. You know, my first game in the Georgia
- 20:54Speaker 5: Dome at the time, we had about twenty thousand fans
- 20:58Speaker 5: in the stadium, and I'm looking around like, somehow, some.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Way, this's got to change. Obviously.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Arthur Blank was, you know, a genius from a business perspective,
- 21:07Speaker 5: so he made it so that people wanted to come
- 21:11Speaker 5: to the games. And you know, when he purchased the
- 21:13Speaker 5: team in two thousand and one, he marketed the right way.
- 21:16Speaker 5: He was able to, you know, lord the ticket prices
- 21:20Speaker 5: and bring people in so we could feel the stadium
- 21:23Speaker 5: for one. Then once the stadium got for him, like nah,
- 21:26Speaker 5: I just I can't disappoint. And the city meant so
- 21:30Speaker 5: much because of the pressure that I put.
- 21:32Speaker 3: On myself to please the fans.
- 21:35Speaker 5: And you know, I just took it upon myself, man,
- 21:38Speaker 5: to do everything possible, even though it was tough, man,
- 21:43Speaker 5: because you know, when you line up behind that center
- 21:47Speaker 5: and that ball is hiked on that first play, man,
- 21:49Speaker 5: you just got to brace up, believe in your study,
- 21:52Speaker 5: believe in your in what you see, and be a
- 21:56Speaker 5: man back there.
- 21:57Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying.
- 21:57Speaker 5: That's why I try not to, you know, scrutinized and
- 22:01Speaker 5: chastise the quarterbacks now because I can relate to what
- 22:04Speaker 5: they're going through. I know how hard it is, and
- 22:06Speaker 5: you know, that's why we celebrate the ones who win
- 22:09Speaker 5: on a consistent basis, like like the Lamars and like
- 22:11Speaker 5: the Patricks because it's tough. But you know, uh, Dan
- 22:17Speaker 5: Reeves was amazing. It was the only coach that I
- 22:21Speaker 5: told myself growing up, I didn't want to listens a
- 22:23Speaker 5: little different because I used to watch him as a kid,
- 22:26Speaker 5: and John Elway was one of my favorites. That's why
- 22:28Speaker 5: I could fluctuate when I'm eight seven, You know what
- 22:31Speaker 5: I'm saying, like these quarterbacks that could move like me,
- 22:34Speaker 5: that I was watching them like I want to be
- 22:36Speaker 5: like him. So Dan Reeves used to always just get
- 22:39Speaker 5: into John's ass. I'm talking about all the time. If
- 22:42Speaker 5: you go back and watch old clips, he he I mean,
- 22:44Speaker 5: he lit ding up, probably bring the best out of him.
- 22:47Speaker 5: And I used to tell myself, God, if I get
- 22:51Speaker 5: drafted any team, don't let it be Dan Reeves. And
- 22:56Speaker 5: he ended up drafting me. But it was the best
- 22:59Speaker 5: thing to happen to me because he knew what to
- 23:00Speaker 5: do with me.
- 23:01Speaker 3: He knew how to.
- 23:03Speaker 5: You know, when I got to a point where I
- 23:05Speaker 5: was like riding too high, you knew how to bring
- 23:07Speaker 5: me back down. And he was certainly one of the
- 23:10Speaker 5: coaches that I respect more than anything.
- 23:15Speaker 3: And he made me.
- 23:17Speaker 5: Afraid to fail, you'd be afraid to fail. And I
- 23:21Speaker 5: always never wanted to let him down. So we're talking
- 23:23Speaker 5: about black quarterbacks.
- 23:26Speaker 4: There is a certain political aspect that we got to
- 23:28Speaker 4: talk about Colin Kaepernick. Yeah, taking a stand, well taking
- 23:33Speaker 4: a knee actually, and that that was a major thing.
- 23:38Speaker 4: And as a quarterback, he was the leader of the team.
- 23:41Speaker 4: And so what what how do you feel looking back
- 23:45Speaker 4: on this whole situation now that is over with and
- 23:49Speaker 4: in retrospect, how do you how do you feel about
- 23:52Speaker 4: that situation from his perspective how or and also the
- 23:57Speaker 4: NFL's perspective.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Yeah, I feel like Colin did what he felt was right,
- 24:00Speaker 5: and he took a stance for a lot of people.
- 24:05Speaker 5: He used his platform to bring awareness to what he
- 24:10Speaker 5: believed in. Whether people felt like, you know, it was
- 24:13Speaker 5: the right platform to do it on or not, that
- 24:16Speaker 5: was his perspective and that's what he wanted to do
- 24:19Speaker 5: free will in this world. The NFL stands like, I
- 24:24Speaker 5: don't know, you know, what they you know, established or
- 24:28Speaker 5: what they felt like was right or wrong in regards
- 24:31Speaker 5: to it. I've watched it like everybody else and wanted
- 24:35Speaker 5: to see what the outcome was gonna be what the
- 24:37Speaker 5: conclusion was, I'm going to turn out to be because
- 24:40Speaker 5: it was a unique moment in sports. I think Colin
- 24:43Speaker 5: realized that. I think the NFL realized that. I think
- 24:46Speaker 5: on all levels, everybody just wanted some form of respect,
- 24:52Speaker 5: from the NFL to Colin.
- 24:55Speaker 3: To just people abroad.
- 24:56Speaker 5: I think everybody wanted, you know, this situation to have
- 25:01Speaker 5: a positive outcome.
- 25:02Speaker 3: But I think at the end of.
- 25:03Speaker 5: The day, it was all about respect, everybody respecting one
- 25:06Speaker 5: another decision that was being made. And so in talking
- 25:11Speaker 5: to Colin, I know, you know, he's happy and that
- 25:15Speaker 5: he stood up.
- 25:17Speaker 3: He's happy that he took a stance for.
- 25:20Speaker 5: A lot of people, and you know a lot of
- 25:22Speaker 5: people appreciate that. So he's living his best life now
- 25:26Speaker 5: and things are good and no complaints, so you know,
- 25:31Speaker 5: we all move forward from it.

- 26:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:02Speaker 6: So obviously Colin never got the second chance, but you did.
- 26:06Speaker 6: I want to talk about Philly and obviously Andy Reid
- 26:10Speaker 6: Hall of Fame coach now believing in you, and at
- 26:14Speaker 6: the time they have a quarterback franchise quarterback. He's in
- 26:18Speaker 6: the shout to donvd McNabb at the time, he's the
- 26:22Speaker 6: star of the team and I'm wondering, obviously he's in
- 26:26Speaker 6: the documentary and y'all seem like y'all have a good relationship.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Yeah, was it always like that when you got there?
- 26:31Speaker 6: Because I'm looking at it, it's like, this is a
- 26:33Speaker 6: superstar who's coming into the team.
- 26:36Speaker 3: I'm the quarterback. He's the only here to take my job.
- 26:39Speaker 5: Really Yeah, well, I don't think Donovan looked at it
- 26:43Speaker 5: as if I was coming to take his job.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Donovan, Andy, they just embraced me in that moment.
- 26:50Speaker 5: Donovan, he knew that I grew up idolizing him and
- 26:53Speaker 5: wanting to be Donovan McNabb. The nineteen ninety nine draft,
- 26:57Speaker 5: as you heard in the dock, was so inspirational to
- 27:02Speaker 5: me because that made me feel like I could make it.
- 27:07Speaker 5: And when I seen Donovan go because I watched everything
- 27:11Speaker 5: Donovan did in college and something like he couldn't do
- 27:14Speaker 5: no wrong in my eyes, and he really didn't do
- 27:15Speaker 5: any wrong, and so he knew that he was one
- 27:21Speaker 5: of my favorites.
- 27:22Speaker 3: It was just kind of screwed up that we had
- 27:26Speaker 3: to face each other.
- 27:28Speaker 5: And so when you have to face somebody in the
- 27:31Speaker 5: league or in any competition, it becomes a rival you
- 27:34Speaker 5: know what I'm saying. Becomes a rivalry. And you know,
- 27:38Speaker 5: it didn't stop the love that I had for him.
- 27:40Speaker 5: It just made me want to beat him. And once
- 27:42Speaker 5: I got to Philadelphia, I was like, man, look, it's
- 27:46Speaker 5: an honor to be in the same room with you,
- 27:49Speaker 5: to share some of the same football stories and to
- 27:52Speaker 5: talk football with you and gain the understanding Donovan he
- 27:56Speaker 5: knew a lot about the game from what he learned
- 27:59Speaker 5: from Andy. I was just like in the room just
- 28:01Speaker 5: soaking up everything because I'm like, this is gonna be
- 28:04Speaker 5: a good situation for me because I can expand my
- 28:06Speaker 5: football knowledge. And after listening to Donovan talk for you know,
- 28:12Speaker 5: the first week, I'm like, I see why he's a
- 28:15Speaker 5: future Hall of Famer.
- 28:16Speaker 3: I was always a little envious.
- 28:19Speaker 5: In a good way of Donovan and Andy because Andy
- 28:22Speaker 5: used to let Donovan throw that day.
- 28:25Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, Oh, three h four five.
- 28:27Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying.
- 28:28Speaker 5: Donovan led the league in a lot of statistical categories, yes,
- 28:33Speaker 5: and so.
- 28:33Speaker 3: You know he learned a lot along the way.
- 28:36Speaker 5: And big credit to Andy Reid for being in you
- 28:39Speaker 5: know that the mentor in his football journey.
- 28:42Speaker 3: You ended up beating him a lot. Actually they got
- 28:45Speaker 3: beat him twice.
- 28:46Speaker 5: Yeah, he went to he always got me in the
- 28:47Speaker 5: uh in the playoffs, he went to Washington.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:51Speaker 6: I never forgot again, and uh, I never forget. It
- 28:55Speaker 6: was the first game of the season, Monday night football.
- 28:57Speaker 6: I think it's the first year you're starting, just signed
- 28:59Speaker 6: a new contract.
- 29:00Speaker 3: It's you.
- 29:01Speaker 6: It's shady and y'all got to Sean Jackson. Yeah, yeah,
- 29:04Speaker 6: they first first played a game. They paid Donovan right
- 29:06Speaker 6: before the game, like, well, you lucky. I was on
- 29:09Speaker 6: the ground then I was hungry.
- 29:11Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying.
- 29:11Speaker 5: I was coming back from coming back from prison, and
- 29:14Speaker 5: I was first coming off injury. You know what I'm saying, Like,
- 29:18Speaker 5: I know my financial state, So I was back in
- 29:22Speaker 5: that mold. I was like in Virginia Tech move where
- 29:24Speaker 5: I was just trying to get it again.
- 29:27Speaker 3: It ain't nothing like going through that process of you know, when.
- 29:32Speaker 5: You you're striving to be great, when you got so much
- 29:37Speaker 5: to play for. I wish, you know, once you know
- 29:41Speaker 5: I got the contract, I would have kept that airs
- 29:44Speaker 5: and I did, I you know, for the most part.
- 29:45Speaker 5: But it was so exhausting to get back to that point.
- 29:50Speaker 5: You don't have to go on to prison for two years,
- 29:53Speaker 5: coming back, sitting for a year, that's three years out
- 29:55Speaker 5: of football, then come back and you get it all back,
- 29:58Speaker 5: and then you know, you got to keep that edge,
- 30:00Speaker 5: keep that edge as things started to change around you.
- 30:03Speaker 5: People started to change. They wanted Andy out of Philly,
- 30:06Speaker 5: you know, and I love Andy the death. So my
- 30:08Speaker 5: heart was like torn. I'm like, how could this great
- 30:11Speaker 5: city not want this great man? But you know, all
- 30:14Speaker 5: good things come to an end, and you know, it's
- 30:18Speaker 5: just a lot of circumstances and that led to me
- 30:21Speaker 5: leaving Philly.
- 30:21Speaker 3: But man, it was some of the best years of
- 30:23Speaker 3: my life.
- 30:24Speaker 5: When I think back, I see pictures, man, and I
- 30:26Speaker 5: just have a great sense of gratitude for that era.
- 30:30Speaker 4: So from a financial sting point, so Dak Prescott. You
- 30:34Speaker 4: just signed the biggest contract in history on another black quarterback. Yes,
- 30:38Speaker 4: so two hundred and thirty that congratulations, two hundred and
- 30:41Speaker 4: thirty one million dollars guaranteed eighty million dollars signing bonus.
- 30:45Speaker 4: So the guaranteed aspect is interesting because you had one
- 30:49Speaker 4: hundred and thirty eight million dollar contract with the Falcons,
- 30:52Speaker 4: but only thirty seven million was guaranteed. So before, previously
- 30:56Speaker 4: a lot football contracts were not guaranteed, notoriously for four
- 31:00Speaker 4: contracts were not guaranteed. But now we're seeing more and
- 31:03Speaker 4: more fully guaranteed, almost fully guaranteed NFL contracts, And that
- 31:09Speaker 4: is a big difference because I mean you're talking about
- 31:12Speaker 4: in that situation, almost eighty percent of your contract was
- 31:16Speaker 4: not guaranteed. So people will see the number like you
- 31:18Speaker 4: got one hundred million, but it's like, okay, well the
- 31:20Speaker 4: incentives if you get hurt, if you don't make it
- 31:22Speaker 4: to the Pro Bowl, and then by the time it
- 31:24Speaker 4: equals out, you might not you might get paid twenty
- 31:26Speaker 4: percent of that. So talk about when understanding that when
- 31:31Speaker 4: you first signed that contract, and how the evolution has
- 31:35Speaker 4: changed now.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Yeah, Well, the only thing that matters in the contract
- 31:38Speaker 5: is the fully guaranteed. The rest of it being center
- 31:43Speaker 5: based is just fluff. That's those are agents that y'all
- 31:46Speaker 5: make this contract. One hundred and two hundred and twenty
- 31:49Speaker 5: million for my foot, that's for the brand. You know,
- 31:52Speaker 5: what we as players see is the fully guaranteed.
- 31:55Speaker 3: So it might be you.
- 31:56Speaker 5: Know, two hundred million, but not for guys now, one
- 31:59Speaker 5: hundred and ten million fully guaranteed.
- 32:01Speaker 3: It's still a lot of money.
- 32:02Speaker 5: So when I signed my contract, it was one hundred
- 32:05Speaker 5: and twenty million, thirty seven million fully guaranteed, but or
- 32:11Speaker 5: thirty four or whatever.
- 32:13Speaker 3: But that was in two thousand and four. You know,
- 32:16Speaker 3: it's twenty twenty four.
- 32:17Speaker 5: It's twenty years later, salary caps throwing up inflation. You know,
- 32:24Speaker 5: business is growing around the league, and owners are getting richer,
- 32:27Speaker 5: and you know, you gotta pay players a lot more.
- 32:31Speaker 5: And so that's just the era we are in now,
- 32:32Speaker 5: and guys are fortunate. You know, ten years from now,
- 32:36Speaker 5: the fully guarantees might be two hundred million.
- 32:39Speaker 3: I mean, DeShawn wasn't far from now, yeah, I mean.
- 32:42Speaker 4: That's where how was the pressure was headed When you
- 32:45Speaker 4: signed one hundred million dollars deal, you were still young.
- 32:48Speaker 4: So I'm assuming there was a lot of pressure because
- 32:51Speaker 4: people look at it like, you got a hundred million dollars, right,
- 32:53Speaker 4: So how was that signing that one hundred million dollars
- 32:55Speaker 4: deal but then only actually having thirty seven guaranteed.
- 32:58Speaker 5: Pressure when I signed my first contract. Because my first
- 33:00Speaker 5: contract was like, uh, it's a rookie. It was five years,
- 33:05Speaker 5: sixty two million, eleven million fully guaranteed.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Everybody thought I had you got it, he.
- 33:12Speaker 5: Got it, And I really do wish I had this
- 33:16Speaker 5: sixty two million because but you know that's gonna come
- 33:19Speaker 5: in time, you know, if it's five year.
- 33:22Speaker 6: This episode is brought to you by P and C Bank.

- 35:12Speaker 1: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 35:16Speaker 1: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from Al Salvador
- 35:20Speaker 1: accused of murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan charged with
- 35:24Speaker 1: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 35:28Speaker 1: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 35:32Speaker 1: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy Noman, the United States
- 35:36Speaker 1: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border
- 35:41Speaker 1: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over
- 35:44Speaker 1: one hundred thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you
- 35:47Speaker 1: are here illegally, your next you will be fined nearly
- 35:51Speaker 1: one thousand dollars a day, imprisoned, and deported. You will
- 35:55Speaker 1: never return. But if you register using our CBP home
- 35:59Speaker 1: app and leave now, you could be allowed to return legally.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Do what's right.
- 36:04Speaker 6: Leave now.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Under President Trump America's laws, border and families will be protected.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Sponsored by the United States Department of Home and Security.
- 36:13Speaker 3: There eleven million a year, whatever the average is.
- 36:16Speaker 5: But I learned quickly, and I was always up in
- 36:19Speaker 5: my finances and me and my mom used to always
- 36:21Speaker 5: take a closer look because we didn't we didn't know
- 36:24Speaker 5: about taxes or anything. We've got our first signing bonus,
- 36:28Speaker 5: and once we've seen it and we knew we had
- 36:30Speaker 5: to account for it, you know, we got to revamp
- 36:32Speaker 5: our game plan for longevity. We was always I was
- 36:35Speaker 5: always thinking long term to make sure that when I
- 36:39Speaker 5: did retire, that I retired in a good state. And
- 36:44Speaker 5: so even as a rookie when my signing bonus was
- 36:46Speaker 5: three million, when I got to three million, it was
- 36:49Speaker 5: at one point now and I'm like, oh, man, yeah,
- 36:53Speaker 5: I got to get to that next contract if I
- 36:55Speaker 5: want to, you know, live the life I want to
- 36:59Speaker 5: live when I retired. This at twenty years old, but
- 37:02Speaker 5: I'm thinking retirement in ten years. You don't know if
- 37:05Speaker 5: you're gonna get that second contract. You don't know how
- 37:07Speaker 5: good you're gonna be. You don't know if you're gonna
- 37:09Speaker 5: be a bus or it's just the unknown, and you know,
- 37:12Speaker 5: people fear that.
- 37:13Speaker 3: I know, so it was fear there.
- 37:15Speaker 5: But I was like, yo, if I just take care
- 37:17Speaker 5: of my finances, then I don't have to worry about
- 37:20Speaker 5: what I do on the field. I can just perform.
- 37:23Speaker 5: And so fast forward to two thousand and four. When
- 37:27Speaker 5: I got that contract, I was in a good state.
- 37:30Speaker 5: I think I had about five million saved up just
- 37:33Speaker 5: from all league you know what I'm saying, from three
- 37:35Speaker 5: years of playing and buy my mama house and kind
- 37:38Speaker 5: of you know, taking care of myself and my family.
- 37:41Speaker 5: And then I got the big contract, and so right
- 37:44Speaker 5: then and now I was like, Okay, financially I'm set,
- 37:48Speaker 5: you know. Now it's about making the right choices investing
- 37:51Speaker 5: and making the money grow.
- 37:53Speaker 3: So that's still in Atlanta.
- 37:55Speaker 6: But then in Philly you get are you the first
- 37:57Speaker 6: player to get two one hundred million dollar contracts?
- 38:00Speaker 5: You are the first man? I guess, too big signing.
- 38:03Speaker 5: So like, explain what the contract is? Yeah, you want
- 38:06Speaker 5: to call it one hundred yeah?
- 38:08Speaker 6: Yeah, well paper, So the Atlanta one sets you up
- 38:12Speaker 6: right financially you're secure? Yeah, the Philly one, now are
- 38:16Speaker 6: you looking at it differently? Like all right, now it's
- 38:19Speaker 6: time to sit down and figure out what the investments
- 38:22Speaker 6: are going to look like.
- 38:22Speaker 3: Yeah. After I get up the.
- 38:23Speaker 5: Field, Philly contract was more so I was in the
- 38:27Speaker 5: bankruptcy at the time from coming out of prison. I
- 38:31Speaker 5: still don't know how that happened, but yeah, I was
- 38:33Speaker 5: in the bankruptcy coming out coming out of prison, and
- 38:36Speaker 5: so now you know, I'm there's more money that's been
- 38:40Speaker 5: It's not just paying taxes. Now you got you know,
- 38:43Speaker 5: a whole nother burell that you gotta pay. So now
- 38:46Speaker 5: I'm really cracking down on the finances, like all right, bo,
- 38:49Speaker 5: I'm looking at when I I can sustain that's okay,
- 38:52Speaker 5: that's that's feasible. And then you know, like I say,
- 38:58Speaker 5: Philadelphia gave me the contract and I was thankful, Like
- 39:01Speaker 5: they knew the state that I was in. They knew
- 39:03Speaker 5: that I was grinded and trying to get back. And
- 39:05Speaker 5: that's why some people, man, you just got to be
- 39:07Speaker 5: so thankful for him could because they didn't have to
- 39:10Speaker 5: do that. I earned it. But you know, Andy not
- 39:17Speaker 5: saying he gave it to me or they wanted you
- 39:20Speaker 5: need to be financially free.
- 39:23Speaker 3: You knew the state I was in. I talked to
- 39:24Speaker 3: Andy about everything.
- 39:25Speaker 5: He knew what was going on in my life from
- 39:27Speaker 5: A to Z, and so to be able to get
- 39:30Speaker 5: that at the time, it was like, all right, man,
- 39:33Speaker 5: I work hard for this. I just got to make
- 39:35Speaker 5: sure I take care of it because you know, I'm
- 39:38Speaker 5: busting it down. You know what I'm saying, It's getting
- 39:40Speaker 5: busted down in thirds.
- 39:42Speaker 3: But what's also new in the NFL is equity and ownership. Yeah.
- 39:46Speaker 6: Is that something that you've ever thought that or looking
- 39:50Speaker 6: forward to? Obviously the Falcons just did it. They had
- 39:52Speaker 6: a small group because people don't realize enough for the franchises.
- 39:56Speaker 3: Have been here for a long time. Yeah. Giants are
- 39:58Speaker 3: celebrating one hundred years. Yeah.
- 40:00Speaker 6: I just looked at the purchase price in nineteen twenty three.
- 40:04Speaker 6: They were purchased for five hundred dollars. Five hundred dollars.
- 40:08Speaker 6: The Commanders would just hold for six point two billion.
- 40:10Speaker 3: Yeah. The Giants are valued probably more than that.
- 40:13Speaker 6: And so if they never sell the team, then they
- 40:15Speaker 6: never really have the liquidation events yep. And so they're
- 40:17Speaker 6: tarning to take equity to do it. Yeah, so you
- 40:19Speaker 6: signed to see that now. Is that something that you
- 40:22Speaker 6: think about ownership inside of a team?
- 40:25Speaker 5: I would love to you know what I'm saying. I
- 40:27Speaker 5: think that's another way to build financial wealth. But you
- 40:32Speaker 5: got in line with the right people and the right
- 40:34Speaker 5: partners at the right time. One of my good friends
- 40:38Speaker 5: who's affiliated with the Lanta Falcons. Got a percentage and
- 40:41Speaker 5: got a piece. But you know, that's not something that
- 40:46Speaker 5: I'm looking for. It's not something that I wake up
- 40:49Speaker 5: and say, you know this, this is what I want
- 40:51Speaker 5: to set my you know, set my heart out to do.
- 40:55Speaker 5: If it happens, it happens, if the opportunity presents itself.
- 40:58Speaker 5: There are other entities that I got an opportunity to
- 41:02Speaker 5: be involved in. From a financial standpoint, that can be
- 41:06Speaker 5: a really good situation. Some some things is coming in Atlanta.
- 41:11Speaker 5: So right now, I'm just really in a good state, uh,
- 41:14Speaker 5: you know, just with the people that that I'm centering
- 41:16Speaker 5: around and the relationships that I have. And I think
- 41:19Speaker 5: as you get older, that's really important to surround yourself
- 41:22Speaker 5: with the right people who can help you on a
- 41:24Speaker 5: day to day basis make decisions and put you in
- 41:27Speaker 5: the right situations that's gonna be beneficial for you.
- 41:31Speaker 4: So, from a financial standpoint, what's your advice to players,
- 41:34Speaker 4: because a lot of there's a lot of hard stories
- 41:37Speaker 4: as far as people getting robbed by their accountings, financial advisors,
- 41:40Speaker 4: making bad decisions. The list goes on from different maybe
- 41:45Speaker 4: mom that they got to pay child support and not
- 41:47Speaker 4: fully understanding how contracts work, spending too much money, bad
- 41:51Speaker 4: real estate deals. I'm sure you've probably seen it all.
- 41:54Speaker 4: So what what's your advice to players as far as
- 41:58Speaker 4: you know, avoiding falls that athletes have been prone to
- 42:03Speaker 4: fall into.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Yeah, my advice is that.
- 42:07Speaker 5: You know, you know how to count, you know how
- 42:09Speaker 5: to do audition and subtraction, and keep it that simple.
- 42:13Speaker 5: If there's an investment that you want to get involved in,
- 42:17Speaker 5: I say, you know, just perceive a caution and don't
- 42:23Speaker 5: overwhelm yourself.
- 42:24Speaker 3: Don't be thrown around millions of dollars. You know.
- 42:29Speaker 5: Uh God comes and says, oh yeah, were about to
- 42:32Speaker 5: you know, build this uh duplex over here, and it
- 42:36Speaker 5: costs five million.
- 42:38Speaker 3: We need a million dollars. Now, how about I give
- 42:39Speaker 3: you two hundred.
- 42:40Speaker 5: Thousand dollars first and let me and or introduce me
- 42:44Speaker 5: to the investment group or the people that's involved. How
- 42:47Speaker 5: we how we gonna you know, financially buy this property,
- 42:52Speaker 5: you know, make sure that they can fully function and
- 42:55Speaker 5: then also get a return. You know, you got to
- 42:57Speaker 5: ask questions, but sometimes you ask questions and you get
- 43:01Speaker 5: the answers that people want to give you if they
- 43:03Speaker 5: know you naive and they know you don't know, then
- 43:05Speaker 5: they can tell you anything. And so you got to
- 43:08Speaker 5: read the room. And that's why I say in the beginning,
- 43:11Speaker 5: don't go invest in millions of dollars. Like I gave
- 43:15Speaker 5: a financial advisor eight million dollars when I was in Atlanta.
- 43:19Speaker 5: I gave it to him because I had a lot
- 43:23Speaker 5: and I wanted to grow it. And he took it
- 43:27Speaker 5: and pretty much put it into what he wanted to
- 43:29Speaker 5: put it into. And then when I was going through
- 43:33Speaker 5: a rough time and I had to liquidate because of
- 43:37Speaker 5: the trouble, I got in to pay back, you know,
- 43:40Speaker 5: creditors to whoever wasn't I couldn't look with it. I
- 43:44Speaker 5: couldn't find them, couldn't lick with they did. I'm just
- 43:48Speaker 5: forced to file bankrupt.
- 43:49Speaker 3: What was it put in? Like a real estate deal?
- 43:51Speaker 5: It was in a big real estate I mean it
- 43:53Speaker 5: was an amazing deal. Now we was pretty much building
- 43:55Speaker 5: the city, you know, strip malls, movie theater. Yeah, yeah,
- 44:00Speaker 5: for sure. It was a hellicon Union city. It was
- 44:04Speaker 5: a hell of a plan, hell of a plan. And
- 44:06Speaker 5: I was like, oh, y'all, you know what, I just
- 44:09Speaker 5: spied to them, bro, I'm trying to grow, you know,
- 44:12Speaker 5: my You know what I'm saying, this is my portfolio.
- 44:14Speaker 3: I'm trying to grow it.
- 44:15Speaker 5: I'm twenty I'm twenty five, twenty six years old, and
- 44:19Speaker 5: I told you I always stayed ahead. I always think
- 44:22Speaker 5: about my finances. Couldn't amount of millions and accounting. I'm like, oh,
- 44:26Speaker 5: I can live off that because I already got everything
- 44:29Speaker 5: that I need and I'm still playing, and I know
- 44:32Speaker 5: what I'm making this year and I know what I got.
- 44:34Speaker 5: All right, take that, and so those the type of
- 44:37Speaker 5: situations that you can fall into. I feel like I
- 44:40Speaker 5: was never supposed to file for bankruptcy.
- 44:43Speaker 3: How'd that happen?
- 44:46Speaker 5: When you're in prison and you can't make phone calls
- 44:48Speaker 5: and talk to people and catch up with people, they
- 44:51Speaker 5: run off.
- 44:53Speaker 3: I'm just being candid, you know what I'm saying.
- 44:54Speaker 5: I know we having a conversation about other things, but
- 44:57Speaker 5: you act and sometimes I feel like therapeutic for me
- 45:00Speaker 5: to talk about the pitfalls and the things I got
- 45:04Speaker 5: for him. You ask how you know what I'm saying,
- 45:07Speaker 5: Just to be where are your people and just know
- 45:10Speaker 5: the situations that you're getting into, because you can get
- 45:12Speaker 5: taken full advantage of. And that's why I tell young
- 45:15Speaker 5: men and women don't go invest in millions of dollars.
- 45:21Speaker 3: It would have softened the blow for me.
- 45:22Speaker 5: I'd have been okay if i'd have gave him a
- 45:24Speaker 5: two million as opposed to eight. Now I got room
- 45:27Speaker 5: to work work around certain situations. So yeah, man, you
- 45:30Speaker 5: got to be smart with your money because that's your
- 45:32Speaker 5: money at the end of the day.
- 45:33Speaker 3: And learn at the same time. Yeah, I mean we
- 45:36Speaker 3: have to learn from our heroes.
- 45:37Speaker 6: Yeah, and so like to see you speak about it,
- 45:40Speaker 6: to see you be vulnerable about it.
- 45:43Speaker 3: They're gonna learn from it for sure.
- 45:45Speaker 6: I think one of the most important piece is when
- 45:46Speaker 6: you're talking to Dion in the documentary and he says,
- 45:51Speaker 6: obviously you had to come back, but he didn't realize
- 45:53Speaker 6: you a whole until you saw you with the family.
- 45:56Speaker 3: I know your wife is ep on the project.
- 45:58Speaker 6: Talk about that, the process of working together on something
- 46:02Speaker 6: that's so important to the sport but to you as
- 46:05Speaker 6: a union, like you're doing something together, you're working with
- 46:07Speaker 6: your wife talking about that.
- 46:08Speaker 3: It's fun when you get to work with your companion.
- 46:10Speaker 5: Man, it's also nerve racking at the same time because
- 46:14Speaker 5: a lot of the things it in relationships, you know,
- 46:17Speaker 5: you bump here is and you don't see how to
- 46:19Speaker 5: aunt certain things. So it's like, yo, I should ask
- 46:21Speaker 5: this question now, y'all used to ask that question. Her
- 46:23Speaker 5: and to producer to get together and they devise a
- 46:26Speaker 5: plan and it all turned out to be, you know,
- 46:32Speaker 5: the best thing that we could have done. You know
- 46:34Speaker 5: what I'm saying in terms of right now, But yeah, man,
- 46:38Speaker 5: just being a good listener, you know what I'm saying,
- 46:41Speaker 5: following the game plan, just liking football, trusting her judgment,
- 46:46Speaker 5: you know, trusting other producers judgments and what they believe in.
- 46:49Speaker 5: And I don't have all the answers sometimes, but I
- 46:52Speaker 5: can walk in the room and if it's football related,
- 46:54Speaker 5: I probably can answer more questions than anybody. It's not
- 46:59Speaker 5: that we're all time. When you know, you stepping in
- 47:02Speaker 5: a different arena. You know, that's their arena. They produce
- 47:05Speaker 5: and they ep projects. And this is not the first rodeo,
- 47:09Speaker 5: but for me, it was my first time. I was
- 47:11Speaker 5: just really blessed to be the talent and this I
- 47:13Speaker 5: felt like to be able to do the interviews and
- 47:16Speaker 5: sit down with all these guys and you know, gain
- 47:18Speaker 5: the understanding of their football life and their football journey,
- 47:21Speaker 5: like I said, and so in talking to my wife's like,
- 47:26Speaker 5: that's what we set out to do that, that's what
- 47:28Speaker 5: the plan was. When y'all I pitched this to you
- 47:31Speaker 5: in the car, would you do this? I was like, cool, Yeah,
- 47:35Speaker 5: sound like a hell of a solid project. Let's do it.
- 47:38Speaker 5: So when it was time to do it and make suggestions,
- 47:42Speaker 5: and sometimes I just had to shut up and listen,
- 47:45Speaker 5: and it turned out for the better.
- 47:48Speaker 3: To follow out real quick.
- 47:49Speaker 6: So in terms of creating it, because a lot of
- 47:51Speaker 6: people don't even know the process of creating documentary all
- 47:54Speaker 6: y'all self under it. And then the other part is
- 47:57Speaker 6: it's coming out on Prime. Correct, it's coming out on Prime?
- 48:00Speaker 6: Was I'm Prome? So you got to picture to two
- 48:02Speaker 6: different you had to picture, Yeah, what's that process?
- 48:04Speaker 3: I see? I didn't know a lot about that process.
- 48:08Speaker 3: You know.
- 48:08Speaker 5: All I knew was the money and being the talent.
- 48:12Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying. You know, I learned it,
- 48:18Speaker 5: and I learned so much in this Like I'm ready
- 48:20Speaker 5: to move forward, but I can't take other people's con
- 48:22Speaker 5: I got my own concepts of me and my team,
- 48:25Speaker 5: my crew, and wife got her own concepts to what
- 48:27Speaker 5: they about to go do. But now I know, like
- 48:30Speaker 5: little stuff got to start out with a sizzle, put
- 48:34Speaker 5: that together. Somebody got to funded. It's either gonna be you,
- 48:38Speaker 5: somebody else or some partners. And and so I learned
- 48:43Speaker 5: and a collective effort you can get to the end game.
- 48:46Speaker 5: But a little quicker, you know, she was instrumental in
- 48:51Speaker 5: the concept. I was able to put the money together
- 48:58Speaker 5: and they was able to execute and get it sold.
- 49:01Speaker 5: So teamwork. And I was like, I say, blessed to
- 49:05Speaker 5: be the talent in it. I see so much good
- 49:08Speaker 5: in it. Man, I just wanted wanting to always feel
- 49:12Speaker 5: like damn man, Like if the league don't embrace us
- 49:16Speaker 5: as black quarterbacks, man, we never get an opportunity to
- 49:20Speaker 5: line up and say hut for the Tennessee Titans or
- 49:24Speaker 5: the Philadelphia Eagles or the Baltimore Ravens. Man. The league
- 49:28Speaker 5: has come so far bro from where it was. And
- 49:32Speaker 5: maybe it was just stereotypes from the outside world. It
- 49:34Speaker 5: might not even have been inside the NFL world. It's
- 49:38Speaker 5: just so much pressure can accumulate from fans and people,
- 49:42Speaker 5: and you hear about these guys get hate mail and
- 49:44Speaker 5: all that. So if Doug Willims getting hate mail. Can
- 49:47Speaker 5: you imagine what's coming to the facility, the organization. They've
- 49:52Speaker 5: seen the same thing, and so pressure comes from all sides.
- 49:58Speaker 5: But it takes somebody to stand up say you know what, man,
- 50:01Speaker 5: screw that. I don't care, Doug gonna be my quarterback.
- 50:03Speaker 5: You start in the super Bowl today, broken barrier. And
- 50:06Speaker 5: I think when people do it, they don't even maybe
- 50:08Speaker 5: they think about doing it. This might be the first
- 50:10Speaker 5: black quarter when I got dropped a number one, first
- 50:12Speaker 5: black quarterbacks.
- 50:13Speaker 3: And I don't know.
- 50:14Speaker 5: I don't necessarily think Damn Reeds was trying to break
- 50:16Speaker 5: a barrier. I think he was doing what he thought
- 50:19Speaker 5: was right, the right thing to do in his heart.
- 50:21Speaker 3: Obviously he wanted to win.
- 50:23Speaker 5: And you know Arthur Smith, who was the on at
- 50:25Speaker 5: the time, did the same thing. They felt the same way.
- 50:30Speaker 5: Y'all don't care what color he is. Y'all black, white
- 50:32Speaker 5: and different. Yo, I need you come on. And that
- 50:36Speaker 5: meant a lot, man. And when I was on a podium,
- 50:39Speaker 5: they was like, Yo, you know you just made a history.
- 50:40Speaker 5: I'm like, Yo, that's the last thing I'm thinking. But
- 50:46Speaker 5: looking at it twenty five years later or even ten
- 50:49Speaker 5: years later, it's like, man, Damn. That was a big
- 50:53Speaker 5: moment because when because Cam went number one a couple
- 50:56Speaker 5: of years later. But man, I always referenced and as
- 50:59Speaker 5: you're saying in The Doctor ninety nine draft Man, when
- 51:03Speaker 5: Donovan and Kelly Smith, Dante, Cole Pepper, Sean King, when
- 51:07Speaker 5: all them boys went, I was like, yo, I got
- 51:10Speaker 5: a shot. I'm not playing quarterback for no reason. For
- 51:14Speaker 5: a lot of years, I felt like I was playing
- 51:16Speaker 5: quarterback just to get put in another position.
- 51:19Speaker 3: When did you feel confident that you now, this is it,
- 51:22Speaker 3: this is my position.
- 51:24Speaker 5: Like I say, ninety nine, I was at Virginia Tech,
- 51:27Speaker 5: and it was rough at Virginia Tech in the beginning
- 51:32Speaker 5: because I had a tough time picking up offense.
- 51:34Speaker 3: Like I said, I didn't.
- 51:35Speaker 5: I wasn't fortunate enough to go to camps and learn
- 51:37Speaker 5: from quarterback coaches early like these kids can do now.
- 51:40Speaker 5: So when I got there, I was raw. I really
- 51:43Speaker 5: didn't know how to like compartmentalize the offense, and you
- 51:49Speaker 5: know how to learn it, what it takes to learn it.
- 51:51Speaker 3: It took about four months for me to learn the offense.
- 51:54Speaker 5: But when I finally got it, I was able to
- 51:57Speaker 5: pair that up with the athleticism and then that's when
- 52:01Speaker 5: I became a dynamic player. But it all starts with
- 52:05Speaker 5: your mental You got to know what you're doing first,
- 52:07Speaker 5: and then that the physical talent come out. It was
- 52:10Speaker 5: a rough ride. It was a tough journey man. Like
- 52:12Speaker 5: I said, weighed a lot on my mental health, Like
- 52:14Speaker 5: do I play quarterback? Do I switch it? I'm running
- 52:18Speaker 5: out of time over here. I'm being read shirt freshman
- 52:22Speaker 5: next year, true freshman. And one day, Man, I was
- 52:26Speaker 5: just watching the film. Coach told me, every day, keep
- 52:28Speaker 5: coming to the film room, keep coming, just make sure
- 52:30Speaker 5: you keep don't stop believing in yourself and coming and
- 52:34Speaker 5: watching this film and trying to get better. And one
- 52:37Speaker 5: day I was just looking at the film, bro and
- 52:40Speaker 5: the whole football world just came together for me.
- 52:43Speaker 4: Before we wrap, just a few football questions, Pat Mahomes, Yeah,
- 52:48Speaker 4: is he.
- 52:50Speaker 3: Some have said that he's the greatest quarterback of all time?
- 52:53Speaker 3: If not number two?
- 52:56Speaker 5: It's the contrary one greatest quarterback.
- 52:59Speaker 3: Who's the greatest quarterback? Tom Brady? Okay? And is he
- 53:03Speaker 3: is he on pace to be the greatest quarterback of
- 53:05Speaker 3: all going pace? He's Patrick? Is Is he number two?
- 53:08Speaker 3: Number two? Right now? He's number two? As a forty
- 53:10Speaker 3: nine guy. You're gonnaut him in front of Montana. Yes,
- 53:14Speaker 3: he just did you. I mean, I just want to
- 53:16Speaker 3: read how.
- 53:17Speaker 5: Iterated Montanna had four rings, but Montanna won't Patrick, Montana
- 53:24Speaker 5: had Rice. Yeah, Patrick had Tyreek Hill for a couple
- 53:28Speaker 5: of years, got the greatest tight end of all time.
- 53:32Speaker 5: I mean nothing Kelsey, my boy, not taking nothing away
- 53:35Speaker 5: from Kelsey, but Kelsey is a tight end, you know
- 53:40Speaker 5: what I'm saying, which makes it even more prolific for
- 53:43Speaker 5: him because to be the greatest tight and one of
- 53:46Speaker 5: the greatest tight ends because I put him up there
- 53:48Speaker 5: with Tony Gonzalez was a great tight end and it
- 53:53Speaker 5: was you know, grounk. You know what I'm saying. It's
- 53:56Speaker 5: about five of them that they can all be number
- 53:58Speaker 5: one for sure.
- 53:59Speaker 3: Nothing another has done with Kelsey's done now.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Yeah, but he also has terrible well he has not
- 54:07Speaker 4: have good receivers my home.
- 54:11Speaker 5: Put the Hall of Fame. But I'm talking abou Tyreek
- 54:14Speaker 5: for a couple of years. Yeah, but he's all yeah, yeah,
- 54:18Speaker 5: all in all man, because he ain't about the tight end.
- 54:22Speaker 5: Kelsey is great. They all great. But when you're talking
- 54:24Speaker 5: about quarterback play, Patrick could do a little bit more
- 54:28Speaker 5: than Joe. Yes, you know what I'm saying, move like this.
- 54:32Speaker 5: The game last night is crazy, you know what I'm saying.
- 54:35Speaker 5: That was crazy, and so he can move just enough,
- 54:37Speaker 5: joke and move to man. Look, I do see Patrick
- 54:40Speaker 5: getting two more.
- 54:42Speaker 3: At least I see it.
- 54:44Speaker 6: This is a football I got two more football questions
- 54:47Speaker 6: because you brought up ninety nine. Was there ever a
- 54:50Speaker 6: time when you were on the field and you looked
- 54:54Speaker 6: on the opposing side or even on your side and said,
- 54:57Speaker 6: there's a better athlete on the field than me. Because
- 54:59Speaker 6: when I'm of the ninety nine and we ran into
- 55:01Speaker 6: him recently, Peter Warick was on that field. Yeah, and
- 55:06Speaker 6: to me, one of the their list players I've ever seen.
- 55:10Speaker 3: Yeah, playing against Florida State that year, it's like.
- 55:15Speaker 5: It's like one of the games that you know, like, yo,
- 55:17Speaker 5: we're probably gonna lose this game. I just got to
- 55:20Speaker 5: play my heart out and I got to give it
- 55:22Speaker 5: everything I got from start to finish because he's gonna
- 55:24Speaker 5: make some plays.
- 55:26Speaker 3: You know.
- 55:26Speaker 5: It's just saying, you know, you can't stop him. You
- 55:28Speaker 5: can only hope to contain him. There was that type
- 55:31Speaker 5: of deal going into the game. They had so many
- 55:34Speaker 5: amazing athletes, Like I think they had like four first
- 55:37Speaker 5: rounders on that team, probably like fifteen guys who got
- 55:40Speaker 5: drafted from that one team alone.
- 55:42Speaker 3: And they was just real fast.
- 55:45Speaker 5: It was in the era where you know, the great
- 55:47Speaker 5: Bobby Batoin was probably at the height of his recruiting
- 55:51Speaker 5: you know what I'm saying, tenure, and he was getting
- 55:55Speaker 5: the best of the best athletes, you know what I'm saying.
- 55:57Speaker 5: And so I felt it me being as fast and
- 56:01Speaker 5: as elusive as I was, and being on turf, they
- 56:04Speaker 5: just kind of outmatched this a little bit in certain areas. Uh.
- 56:08Speaker 5: And why I do think we had the team to
- 56:10Speaker 5: beat him, we had two more quarters, we might have
- 56:13Speaker 5: walked them down.
- 56:16Speaker 3: Was just he caught a bomb in the third quarter
- 56:19Speaker 3: and we just knew it. Damn. So got loose on this,
- 56:22Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying.
- 56:23Speaker 4: Well, the black quarterback also has transitioned in college as well,
- 56:28Speaker 4: n il deals. Yeah, man, And we can't we got
- 56:31Speaker 4: to talk about Shandor Sanders Colorado.
- 56:34Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt, baby boy.
- 56:36Speaker 4: So I mean he got a lamb truck in college,
- 56:39Speaker 4: right and get millions of dollars. So how good do
- 56:43Speaker 4: you think he can be and what how do you think, like,
- 56:48Speaker 4: what would you have done?
- 56:49Speaker 3: As far as the NIL deal has changed this.
- 56:51Speaker 4: It's even the reason why savan quit, we said, because
- 56:56Speaker 4: like he didn't want to compete with that. As far
- 56:59Speaker 4: as raising five million dollars year, it was just it
- 57:02Speaker 4: was just it's a whole different retired to set the ball.
- 57:05Speaker 4: How you feel about NIL and should do of the
- 57:08Speaker 4: N I l I.
- 57:08Speaker 5: Love that these guys got an opportunity to go make
- 57:12Speaker 5: money for their name, image and likeness.
- 57:16Speaker 3: You know. I think it's just that you know what
- 57:18Speaker 3: I'm saying and clear. But for a guy like.
- 57:22Speaker 5: Should Do, I got different perspectives. Chaudor pretty much been
- 57:26Speaker 5: in the same offense for the last couple of years,
- 57:28Speaker 5: so he didn't have to change coordinators when they came
- 57:31Speaker 5: from Jackson State to Colorado. I think Pat Sherman now
- 57:35Speaker 5: is a uh, you know, probably the same things he's doing.
- 57:38Speaker 5: He's doing conceptually, it's not too far from what he learned.
- 57:44Speaker 5: What scares me about the NIL is that you know,
- 57:47Speaker 5: kids just going from different teams to a different team
- 57:51Speaker 5: year after year after learn and learn these offenses.
- 57:54Speaker 3: It's really hard to.
- 57:55Speaker 5: Learn and so you get there and you got paid
- 57:59Speaker 5: a million dollars in it. It's a guy that's that's
- 58:01Speaker 5: been there for two years already and you you got
- 58:04Speaker 5: to learn, but he already know more than you.
- 58:06Speaker 3: HM.
- 58:08Speaker 5: So if you're not exceptional, if you don't have Shador
- 58:10Speaker 5: saying this talent and a bring like Shador, then he's
- 58:17Speaker 5: probably that quarterback is probably gonna look better than you.
- 58:19Speaker 3: You probably gonna struggle.
- 58:20Speaker 5: DJ like good lady. I can't say his name. The
- 58:23Speaker 5: quarterback in Florida State went to three different teams Clemson,
- 58:27Speaker 5: Oregon State, in State, now Florida State or they might
- 58:30Speaker 5: be on for I don't know if they lost.
- 58:32Speaker 3: They won last week. Good, I'm happy.
- 58:38Speaker 5: You know, you got to learn all these different concepts
- 58:41Speaker 5: and man, you're just not comfortable.
- 58:43Speaker 3: It takes time to get comfortable.
- 58:44Speaker 5: You got to go out and practice it against the
- 58:46Speaker 5: defense and learn from your mistakes. And you know what
- 58:49Speaker 5: I'm saying, try to find ways to you know what
- 58:51Speaker 5: I'm saying, move the chains and get better. And that's
- 58:54Speaker 5: it's just not easy when you get learning. But I
- 58:56Speaker 5: do support Nil Shador. You know, he he's worth every
- 59:00Speaker 5: penny from what he got to go through on Saturdays.
- 59:05Speaker 5: And you know, he got the team that's just getting
- 59:07Speaker 5: better and these guys earning that money.
- 59:08Speaker 3: Man, it's it's a lot, you know what I'm saying.
- 59:12Speaker 3: But I think.
- 59:14Speaker 5: You know, in due time, you know, I think a
- 59:15Speaker 5: lot of that to be dispersed amongst the team. I
- 59:18Speaker 5: think that's important. Hey, somebody got to do it.
- 59:21Speaker 6: To door is number one, n Il number two, and
- 59:23Speaker 6: I'm not sure if you watch him play last week
- 59:25Speaker 6: Archie Man and ye, now we knew the pedigree is
- 59:28Speaker 6: there from the throwing, but last two weeks ago he
- 59:33Speaker 6: clocked in at twenty point seven miles per hour on
- 59:36Speaker 6: the field.
- 59:37Speaker 3: Who is that? Paying Man's nephew at Texas? Who's his father?
- 59:43Speaker 3: His father is? This is Cooper?
- 59:48Speaker 6: He didn't make it to the NFL. He had a
- 59:49Speaker 6: spine injury that derailed him in college. Got me thinking, right,
- 59:56Speaker 6: fastest athletes that's played at the position? Putting you, I'm
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: putting Lamar and I have to kind of put him
- 1:00:04Speaker 6: at He's running faster than Tyree Oh whoa you?
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: Arch Manning? He ran twenty saying quarterback, quarterback, quarterback bo.
- 1:00:11Speaker 6: What he clocked the faster time than Tyreek Killer was
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: just a one sprint he's not a fast player.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: Well, if you ran a sprint of twenty point seven,
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: let's think this through thing about this.
- 1:00:22Speaker 6: Let's think because because Tyreek is catching it and running
- 1:00:25Speaker 6: and I'm not saying that spring.
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: He's not wearing one hundred mini dash. I'm saying open field,
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: he ran twenty point seven. But that's one run. I
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: don't care what it is. Bro, you're on the field,
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: you want twenty point seven. That's faster than the fastest
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: guy in the NFL.
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: So I'm thinking, like, at your top speed fastest quarterbacks,
- 1:00:40Speaker 6: you lamar, who else is running him?
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: Not in this class? Gonna come to Willisie Wilson is
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: in there. He's up there. League.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: Willis will definitely run a four four forty or he'll
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: get out quick, really quick.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: RG three.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: That's my guy. Algie three was fast. Not too many
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: more that's gonna move like that. Oh can't can't forget
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: about cam speak. Yeah, I think more of him as
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: power both it is Google it, Yeah, google cam highlights
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: in Auburn, Google cam highlights, and and I watched early Carolina.
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, he probably clocked you know, twenty plus a
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: couple of times.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: So yeah, it's about five of us that it was
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: in the four to four.
- 1:01:25Speaker 6: Club you played in this era right now, pistol offense
- 1:01:30Speaker 6: with the rules, any offense the rules catered to not
- 1:01:34Speaker 6: hit the quarterback. What does Michael Vick look like in
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: twenty twenty four as NFL?
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: Well, I think you know that rule certainly fluctuates for
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: a mobile quarterback. Well most of the guys mobile anyway.
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: So let's just like I shouldn't even say that. Everybody
- 1:01:51Speaker 5: just do a threat and can run now. So yeah,
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: I just think in terms of performance, I'm gonna be
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: up at the top of the league, just like I
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: was when I was twenty four one. I got a
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: great understanding of the game. I do think that coaching Matterson,
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: that gotta be with the coach like Amy Reed or
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: Matt Laflour or Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan. You know,
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: he looking at MVP, you know, type of numbers and performances.
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: So yeah, I mean, I just can't end up these
- 1:02:28Speaker 5: days with a coach that don't know how to use you.
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: Prime example, the Carolina Panthers. I don't know anything about
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: their coaching staff, but I know Brice Young shouldn't have
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: looked the way he looked, And you know, all you
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: gotta do is look around the league and see what's
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: going on around the league to help your player be
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: become a better player.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: It's not rocket science.
- 1:02:50Speaker 5: I think it's all about, you know, sequence and having
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: a flow of how to get a quarterback into a
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: rhythm and feeling good about what he's seeing and what
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: he got to go do and execute on each and
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: every place. So, yeah, everybody can't be a coach in
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: the National Football League, I don't think.
- 1:03:08Speaker 6: Yeah, that's kind of been the talk now is that
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: the guys should be sitting behind the staring quarterback or
- 1:03:14Speaker 6: the quarterback who's been there he was never supposed to. Yeah,
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: Sandy Dalton won this week, so it looks crazy. But
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: then there's as you thats Cam to ce J Stroud.
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: Now the talk is Caleb Williams, maybe he's not ready
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: to start playing.
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: It's tough when you don't have And I won't say
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: these guys don't have talent, but you don't have a coach.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: And I'm not taking anything away from these coaches. I'm
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: just saying.
- 1:03:38Speaker 5: There's no reason why they shouldn't be able to generate
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: no offense when you can't generate no offense.
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: I think that comes down to coaching.
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: On our worst days in Philly, be A scored twenty
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: eight points and that's when Andy was like, he wasn't
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: even called in the place when I was there. Mardy
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: morning Wig, who was a great coordinator, was called in
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: the place. But Andy here input and we still average
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: thirty points a game somewhere around that. So I just
- 1:04:08Speaker 5: know what good coach it looked like. I know what
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: Dan Reeves pouring to me. I know what Greg nap
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: Jim more important to me. I had Bib Patrino Hcopy,
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: I had Chip Kelly, and I had Andy, and so
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: I've been around some of the best offensive minds, and
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: so I know how you got to put a game
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: play together in order to be successful on Sundays.
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: Well, we can talk football day. But thank you for
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: your time. Yes, amazing man. How can the people watch
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: the documentary? Like, what's the all the information? You go
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: to Amazon Prime and check it out.
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure everybody out there got Amazon accounts, man,
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: So don't get one man.
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: Check it out on Amazon Prime.
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: It's the evolution of the black quarterback celebration of how
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: far we've come and the opportunities we've been giving and
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: celebration for the NFL and for dual threat quarterbacks as
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: a whole.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: So really good project, man, some very interesting stories, man,
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: and this was done.
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: So are you out there who said I loosenized the position?
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: I appreciate that I did. But there was a couple
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: that came before me to help me.
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: So check it out before you need five, your top
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: five black quarterbacks?
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: Oh, in order for black quarterbacks all time, over time.
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: Ever, let me rat lines down right now. Okay, I'm
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: just so Donovan at five, no particular, no particular order, Okay, Doug, Okay, Oh.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: Man, it's Warren Marlon, Brisco Randall. This is your favorite
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: because not having crazy Cam Russell. Yeah, Russell Lamar yourself, myself, Patrick,
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: You're not in there. It's in the top ten. Bro.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: What's your fist? Mike?
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: Pat Mahomes Randall Cunningham because that's the first person that
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: I like. How he revolutionized to his father, he played
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: a major part. I think that Warren Moon is underrated.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: That legend.
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: Make sure y'all checked legend. And Russell Wilson I think
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: is underrated too. I think it's it's unfortunate how his
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: career is playing out now. But we can't act like
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: he didn't almost win two super bowl He should have won.
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: He should have two super Bowls under his belt. Well,
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: he's the reason he didn't win the second one?
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: Him? Was it?
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: Pete Carroll him how and Whyshawn Lynz gave an interview
- 1:06:57Speaker 6: and he said, if there's any other quarterback, he changed the.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: Play in the huddle. It don't matter what the coach
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: head coach gives you. I don't care about new quarterbacks.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: You just named. Russell got a super Bowl. Yeah, Patrick
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: got a super Bowl. Ye. Lamar got two m VP,
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: no super Bowl. He's in my five. Yeah, Cam Gota
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: went to a super Bowl. Cam's my five them dudes.
- 1:07:20Speaker 6: Man, I got past east bro Pat, you, Lamar, Warren
- 1:07:25Speaker 6: and Kim and I would put an asterisk Washington.
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: So RG three Yeah, Now.
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: RG three didn't play as long because he got He
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: didn't have a lot.
- 1:07:35Speaker 6: They shouldn't have if he he towards a c L,
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: they kept him in the game. They should have be Seattle.
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: Seattle went to the Super Bowl and one that yet,
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: but they're at home. The grass is terrible in Washington.
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: You know you played there.
- 1:07:46Speaker 5: Yeah, we all felt like he's like cringe and watching
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: RG three, it's ridiculous, like slide think about or you know,
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: it's always next year. I think he had proven a
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: lot that year that he could play in the league. Yeah,
