- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome to another episode of the
- 0:03Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to dive right
- 0:06Speaker 1: back in to the Jess Staley transcript from his trip
- 0:09Speaker 1: to Congress. Question. When you reported it to Mary Erdos,
- 0:14Speaker 1: he gets corrected by Staley. You mean Langford? Question Langford.
- 0:19Speaker 1: What did you say? Answer. I said this. This is
- 0:22Speaker 1: something that I think both Mary and I said. This
- 0:25Speaker 1: is something very concerning. And let's get the bank to
- 0:28Speaker 1: look into it and decide what to do. Question, why
- 0:31Speaker 1: did they not part ways with Mr. Epstein at the time? Answer,
- 0:34Speaker 1: my understanding is the bank restricted his activities significantly within
- 0:38Speaker 1: the bank. And while looking back, it may not seem
- 0:41Speaker 1: as much, but back then, that was a major move
- 0:44Speaker 1: by the bank. And I think for the moment in time,
- 0:47Speaker 1: that deemed sufficient withdrawal of the bank's Epstein business activities. Question,
- 0:52Speaker 1: how many meetings took place on this? Answer, I don't
- 0:55Speaker 1: know how often the rapid response team met. Question, for
- 0:58Speaker 1: the record, the committee... has reviewed documents that reflect at
- 1:01Speaker 1: least five to six meetings on this topic. Staley, also
- 1:05Speaker 1: those rapid response meetings would also, I think, were filed
- 1:08Speaker 1: with the federal government. Question, thank you. In July 2006, Mr.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Epstein was arrested for the first time for soliciting prostitution
- 1:16Speaker 1: for minors. Did you discuss the allegations with Mr. Epstein? Answer, yes. Question,
- 1:21Speaker 1: can you describe what happened in that conversation? Answer again.
- 1:26Speaker 1: He said he was shocked by the allegation. He denied it.
- 1:28Speaker 1: and he denied the ages. Question, Palm Beach detective Joseph
- 1:32Speaker 1: Ricari spoke out about his belief that Epstein was tipped
- 1:36Speaker 1: off about the raid since multiple computers expected to be
- 1:39Speaker 1: at his house were missing when the search warrant was executed.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Did anyone tip off Mr. Epstein to the raid? Answer,
- 1:45Speaker 1: I have no idea. Question, did you ever hear of
- 1:49Speaker 1: anyone informing Mr. Epstein about the impending search warrant? Answer, no. Question,
- 1:54Speaker 1: were you surprised by his arrest? Answer, sure. Question, why? Answer,
- 1:59Speaker 1: because I had known Epstein for a number of years. Again,
- 2:01Speaker 1: he was involved with things like Highbridge Capital Transaction, and
- 2:05Speaker 1: someone who, you know, gets arrested with sex with a minor,
- 2:08Speaker 1: that's shocking. Now Ms. Toland jumps in. Question, what exactly
- 2:12Speaker 1: did Mr. Epstein tell you had occurred that led to
- 2:15Speaker 1: his arrest? Answer, I think there was press about victims
- 2:19Speaker 1: reporting to authorities that they were victimized, and I think
- 2:22Speaker 1: that's what prompted it. Question, what did he tell you
- 2:25Speaker 1: about his side of the story? Or did he tell
- 2:27Speaker 1: you something different? Ms. Brignac, so on his arrest, it's
- 2:30Speaker 1: published in the press, more people are becoming aware. Did
- 2:33Speaker 1: you begin to hear any rumors that his conduct with
- 2:36Speaker 1: minors or a young woman? Answer, just what I read
- 2:39Speaker 1: in the press. Question, but did you discuss it with
- 2:42Speaker 1: anyone else in your financial circle? Did any more information
- 2:45Speaker 1: become available as you began to discuss it with others? Answer,
- 2:50Speaker 1: separate from the press, I don't believe so. Question, the
- 2:52Speaker 1: FCA says they doubted you. Were surprised at the arrest
- 2:57Speaker 1: given all the reports and allegations that you were aware
- 2:59Speaker 1: of by then? Answer in 2006. Question correct. The FCA
- 3:05Speaker 1: found that the bank at large was well aware and
- 3:07Speaker 1: that by 2006 the reports and allegations he was facing
- 3:11Speaker 1: caused them to doubt to believe that you would have
- 3:14Speaker 1: been surprised. Answer. Are you sure that's 2006? I think
- 3:19Speaker 1: the bank was as surprised as I was. Question the FCA.
- 3:22Speaker 1: said that by 2006, but definitely by 2010, JP Morgan
- 3:26Speaker 1: was aware, given Mary Erdo's testimony. Answer, that's four years.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So let's ask the question in the context of 2010. Question,
- 3:35Speaker 1: so my question to you is, do you think the
- 3:38Speaker 1: FCA stated that they doubt you were surprised by the allegations? Answer,
- 3:43Speaker 1: I think in 2010, I would not have been surprised
- 3:45Speaker 1: by the allegations. Question, why? Answer, he'd gone to jail
- 3:49Speaker 1: for it. Question, so at the time, You did understand
- 3:52Speaker 1: that he was soliciting prostitution for minors. Answer, he had
- 3:56Speaker 1: pleaded guilty and he'd gone to jail. Question, thank you.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Now we got Ms. Tolan again. And just one quick
- 4:02Speaker 1: follow-up on the rapid response meeting that we were discussing
- 4:05Speaker 1: a moment ago. Why were you not part of the
- 4:08Speaker 1: team or those meetings? Staley, because I was not part
- 4:11Speaker 1: of the rapid response team. Brignac now asking questions. Question,
- 4:17Speaker 1: I would like to enter into the record Majority Exhibit 7.
- 4:19Speaker 1: This is an email exchange between you, Mr. Staley, and Mr.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Epstein on November 1st, 2009. It's bait-stamped EFTA 007-68032. Brignac,
- 4:32Speaker 1: we'll go off the record to pass this out and
- 4:35Speaker 1: give you a moment to review. We'll go back on
- 4:37Speaker 1: the record. Question, so on November 1st, 2009, you emailed Mr. Epstein,
- 4:42Speaker 1: so when all hell breaks loose and the world is crumbling,
- 4:46Speaker 1: I'll come here and be at peace. Presently, I'm in
- 4:48Speaker 1: the hot tub with a glass of white wine. This
- 4:51Speaker 1: is an amazing place, truly amazing. Next time we're here together,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I owe you so much, and I deeply appreciate your friendship.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I have few so profound. Mr. Staley, what prompted you
- 5:02Speaker 1: to send this email? Answer, I believe this is when
- 5:05Speaker 1: I visited his ranch. I was in Albuquerque on business,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and my understanding was he had the largest ranch in
- 5:11Speaker 1: the state of New Mexico. He wasn't there, but I
- 5:13Speaker 1: was going to travel home that day. I asked if
- 5:16Speaker 1: I could stop by and see his ranch. There was
- 5:18Speaker 1: a couple taking care of the ranch. I was there.
- 5:21Speaker 1: They happened to have a saddled horse for me. I
- 5:23Speaker 1: ride horses. So I went for a quick ride on
- 5:26Speaker 1: the horse, got off. And I remember in the basement
- 5:28Speaker 1: of the house was like a spa area with a
- 5:30Speaker 1: big swimming pool. And I just went there to take
- 5:33Speaker 1: a shower and change. And I believe there was, I
- 5:36Speaker 1: took a shower and I jumped into the hot tub.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I think there was a mini bar and I grabbed
- 5:40Speaker 1: a glass of white wine and I later sent them
- 5:42Speaker 1: the email. Question, what did you mean by I owe
- 5:45Speaker 1: you so much? Answer, you know, he had been helpful
- 5:48Speaker 1: in my career. He had done. He was instrumental in
- 5:51Speaker 1: the high bridge transaction. He had given me, you know,
- 5:54Speaker 1: advice along the way. And I was visiting this extraordinary ranch.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And as I said, I use effusive language. And that's
- 6:01Speaker 1: what I was doing. Question, you testified earlier that you
- 6:05Speaker 1: understood that he did solicit prostitution for minors when he
- 6:08Speaker 1: pled guilty. He pled guilty in 2008. And you sent
- 6:12Speaker 1: this email in 2009. So why did you maintain your
- 6:16Speaker 1: friendship with Mr. Epstein who had solicited prostitution for minors?
- 6:21Speaker 1: Answer again. It's inconceivable to me that he would have
- 6:24Speaker 1: continued and I thought he had paid his fine. He
- 6:26Speaker 1: had gone to jail. My expectation as he would have
- 6:29Speaker 1: reformed himself. And so I maintained the relationship because he
- 6:32Speaker 1: had done a number of viable things to me in
- 6:34Speaker 1: my career. Question. So you maintain your relationship with a
- 6:38Speaker 1: sex offender because he did valuable things for your career. Answer.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I thought it was a one-off event. And so, no,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I didn't think. I'll leave it at that. Question, why
- 6:48Speaker 1: did you believe he would reform himself? Question, because I
- 6:51Speaker 1: would think if you would go, if you spent time
- 6:53Speaker 1: in jail, the last thing you would do is repeat
- 6:55Speaker 1: the behavior that put you in jail. Question, Mr. Staley,
- 6:59Speaker 1: you seem to have a great recollection about the ranch
- 7:01Speaker 1: and all the events that took place there in 2009,
- 7:05Speaker 1: but you can't remember the Snow White events of July
- 7:08Speaker 1: 2010 based on your memory? Can you help reconcile my
- 7:12Speaker 1: confusion on this? Answer, one thing, getting in the car,
- 7:16Speaker 1: driving an hour, going to a ranch, riding on a horse,
- 7:19Speaker 1: seeing a whole new environment, you know, using the spa,
- 7:22Speaker 1: the whole thing surrounding it, as opposed to someone who
- 7:25Speaker 1: apparently I crossed, you know, for a few minutes, I
- 7:27Speaker 1: think is quite a difference. Question, do you normally see
- 7:31Speaker 1: young women in Halloween costumes at your friend's house? Answer, again,
- 7:35Speaker 1: I don't recall that I met someone in a Halloween costume. Question,
- 7:39Speaker 1: but you said you may have. Answer, I don't. He
- 7:42Speaker 1: gets cut off. Question, That's not an event you recall? Answer,
- 7:46Speaker 1: I don't remember seeing Snow White. Question by Ms. Toland.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And when you visited his ranch, did you see anyone
- 7:52Speaker 1: else there besides the couple who worked there? Answer, no,
- 7:55Speaker 1: just the couple and the horse. Question, on your visits
- 7:58Speaker 1: to any of Mr. Epstein's properties, did you see anything unusual? Answer, no. Question,
- 8:03Speaker 1: it's been reported that Mr. Epstein kept nude photographs in
- 8:06Speaker 1: his home. Did you ever see nude photographs? Answer, no. Question,
- 8:10Speaker 1: did you see unusual artwork? Answer, yes. Question, what did
- 8:14Speaker 1: you see? Answer, the one that stands out is that
- 8:17Speaker 1: he had a painting of someone reclining in a chair
- 8:19Speaker 1: with like sort of a dress on with the head
- 8:21Speaker 1: of President Clinton. Question, do you know why he had
- 8:24Speaker 1: this photograph? Answer, no. Question, did you ever ask about it? Answer,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I think he saw it as some sort of joke. Question,
- 8:32Speaker 1: in prior testimony, you've stated that over 25 individual entities
- 8:36Speaker 1: were referred to the bank by Mr. Epstein, to include
- 8:39Speaker 1: Sergey Brin, Google Sultan Ahmed bin Suleiman, Ehud Barak, Peter Mandelson,
- 8:44Speaker 1: Mort Zuckerman, LaFrac Family, Highbridge Capital Management, Glenn Dubin, Eva Dubin,
- 8:50Speaker 1: Andrew Farkas, Catherine Rumler, Bill Gates, Leon Black, Boris Nikolic,
- 8:54Speaker 1: David Gergen, Larry Summers, Nathan Mierwald, Kimball Musk, Elon Musk,
- 8:59Speaker 1: Les Wexner, Bill Richardson, and George Mitchell. Is that correct? Answer, yes. Question,
- 9:06Speaker 1: did Mr. Epstein also facilitate meetings between individuals at J.P.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Morgan with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor? formerly known as Prince Andrew? Answer,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I don't believe so. Question, I believe you previously testified
- 9:18Speaker 1: that he did. Answer, that he did. Question, is your testimony? Answer,
- 9:22Speaker 1: so ask the question again, sorry. Question, has Mr. Epstein
- 9:25Speaker 1: facilitated meetings between individuals at J.P. Morgan with Andrew, Mountbatten, Windsor,
- 9:30Speaker 1: formerly known as Prince Andrew? Answer, yes, sorry, I apologize. Question,
- 9:35Speaker 1: thank you. Why did Mr. Epstein refer these clients to J.P. Morgan? Answer,
- 9:41Speaker 1: I think it was part of him building out his network.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And I think in hindsight, I think that what he
- 9:46Speaker 1: was doing was, you know, we thought he was introducing
- 9:48Speaker 1: us to these people to help JP Morgan. But I
- 9:51Speaker 1: think he was showing to these individuals that he was
- 9:53Speaker 1: connected to JP Morgan to build his credibility. Question, did
- 9:58Speaker 1: all these referrals eventually become client-friendly? of JP Morgan? Answer,
- 10:01Speaker 1: I think many of them were already clients actually, and
- 10:05Speaker 1: some of them became clients. Yes, like Larry and Sergey
- 10:08Speaker 1: Brin of Google became clients on the back of that. Question,
- 10:13Speaker 1: did you benefit from any of these client referrals? Answer,
- 10:16Speaker 1: I mean if you're running the private bank. and you
- 10:18Speaker 1: get introduced to three of the five wealthiest men potentially
- 10:21Speaker 1: in the world, yeah, that's a valuable thing. Question, but
- 10:25Speaker 1: did it actually benefit your career? Did you realize any
- 10:28Speaker 1: benefit in your career? Answer, beyond what is reflected in
- 10:31Speaker 1: the private bank, I didn't personally get something individually because like,
- 10:35Speaker 1: there's no finder fee or something like that, if that's
- 10:38Speaker 1: what you're referring to. Answer, there's no monetary benefit. Answer, no. Question,
- 10:42Speaker 1: did you manage the client's accounts? Answer, no. Question, did
- 10:46Speaker 1: Epstein ever ask you To take a role in someone's account? Answer, no. Question,
- 10:51Speaker 1: was Mr. Epstein involved in any of the accounts? Answer, no. Question,
- 10:55Speaker 1: how much revenue did J.P. Morgan generate from Mr. Epstein's
- 10:58Speaker 1: new client referrals? Answer, I wasn't aware then, but I've
- 11:02Speaker 1: read subsequent it would be, you know, well over 100 million. Question,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and that would have made him an incredibly valuable client, correct? Answer, yeah.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I think the introduction of people that, of the level
- 11:14Speaker 1: of people that he brought us, was very valuable, yes. Question,
- 11:19Speaker 1: do you think his value caused JP Morgan to turn
- 11:21Speaker 1: their heads at the suspicious things that Mr. Epstein was
- 11:25Speaker 1: engaged in even following 2008? Answer again, I was not
- 11:29Speaker 1: part of the bank that reviewed his account. I was
- 11:32Speaker 1: not part of the rapid response team. I was not
- 11:34Speaker 1: part of compliance. So I'd be speculating as to what
- 11:37Speaker 1: their motivations were. Question, I'm asking you to speculate. Do
- 11:41Speaker 1: you believe that JP Morgan kept Mr. Epstein as a
- 11:44Speaker 1: high risk client because he generated so much revenue for
- 11:47Speaker 1: the bank? Answer, no, I don't. I think JP Morgan
- 11:50Speaker 1: felt that the principal activity of the private bank is
- 11:53Speaker 1: to invest money. And I think Morgan took the decision
- 11:56Speaker 1: to no longer deal with Epstein in the management of
- 11:58Speaker 1: his assets. That was a major move by the bank
- 12:01Speaker 1: against him in the bank's mind. Question, who had visibility
- 12:05Speaker 1: into Mr. Epstein's accounts? Answer, I think the bankers that
- 12:08Speaker 1: managed his accounts. I think compliance did. I think legal did.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I think risk did. And people in operations did. Question,
- 12:15Speaker 1: did you? Answer, no. Question, did you ever review any transaction? Answer, no. Question,
- 12:22Speaker 1: were his transactions ever discussed with you? Answer, at some
- 12:26Speaker 1: point I learned that he was making cash withdrawals and
- 12:28Speaker 1: I asked him about that because cash withdrawals were a
- 12:31Speaker 1: red light for the bank and a red light for regulators. Question,
- 12:35Speaker 1: when did you become aware of that? Answer, I'm not
- 12:37Speaker 1: exactly sure the year, but I want to say 2010, 2011. Question,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and who was responsible for reviewing the transactions? Answer, again,
- 12:48Speaker 1: members of the rapid response team, heads of compliance, people
- 12:51Speaker 1: involved in legal. And I think ultimately, my recollection is
- 12:54Speaker 1: it did go all the way to the general counsel
- 12:56Speaker 1: of the bank. Question, and who was that? Answer, at
- 13:01Speaker 1: the beginning of 2009, 2010, I think it was Steve Cutler.
- 13:05Speaker 1: All right, folks, we're going to wrap up right here.
- 13:07Speaker 1: And in the next episode, we're going to pick up
- 13:09Speaker 1: with question, did you ever ask Mr. Epstein about the
- 13:13Speaker 1: cash withdrawals? All the information that goes with this episode
- 13:17Speaker 1: can be found in the description box. What's up, everyone,
- 13:21Speaker 1: and welcome to another episode of the Epstein Chronicles. In
- 13:24Speaker 1: this episode, we're going to dive right back into the
- 13:26Speaker 1: Jess Daly transcript from his trip to Congress. Question, did
- 13:32Speaker 1: you ever ask Mr. Epstein about the cash withdrawals? Answer,
- 13:35Speaker 1: I know someone, either I did or Mary did, and
- 13:38Speaker 1: he said that they, he, told her or he told
- 13:41Speaker 1: me that they were to, or he told his banker,
- 13:44Speaker 1: that they were to fuel his airplane. Question, did you
- 13:47Speaker 1: ask why he would need cash for airplane fuel? Answer,
- 13:50Speaker 1: I don't think I did. I think the question, I
- 13:53Speaker 1: think the question was discussed, and I think the view
- 13:56Speaker 1: was particularly, if you're flying overseas or whatnot, that oftentimes
- 14:00Speaker 1: you would pay cash for fuel as opposed to another source. Question,
- 14:04Speaker 1: what steps were taken to investigate that defense? Answer, I
- 14:08Speaker 1: don't know. Again, I was not part of the team
- 14:11Speaker 1: that was looking into that. Question you mentioned, this made
- 14:15Speaker 1: it up to the general counsel, Stephen Cutler. Did you
- 14:18Speaker 1: discuss the matter with Stephen Cutler? Answer, at one point
- 14:22Speaker 1: in time, yes. I think as Epstein's problems built, he
- 14:25Speaker 1: hired some very recognized lawyers, and I recall that I
- 14:28Speaker 1: suggested Steve meet with him. Question, why did you suggest that? Answer,
- 14:32Speaker 1: so the bank would make an informed decision as to
- 14:35Speaker 1: whether to keep Epstein or not as a client. Question,
- 14:39Speaker 1: in October of 2011, Stephen Cutler complained to you and
- 14:42Speaker 1: others that Epstein was not an honorable person in any way,
- 14:46Speaker 1: and he should not be a client. How did you respond?
- 14:49Speaker 1: Answer again, I let the bank do what the bank
- 14:52Speaker 1: felt was proper. Question, did you say anything at that
- 14:55Speaker 1: moment in response to him though? Answer, I think that's
- 14:58Speaker 1: when he had people like Ken Starr represent him and
- 15:02Speaker 1: just suggested that Steve meet with Ken Starr. But it
- 15:05Speaker 1: was Steve Cutler's decision to close him as a client
- 15:08Speaker 1: or not. If Steve Cutler wanted to do it, he
- 15:11Speaker 1: could have done it. Question. There's reporting that you asked Mr.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Cutler to sit down with Mr. Epstein and hear him out.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Is that correct? Answer. Yes. Or hear his lawyers out.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I forget what it was. It was either meet with Epstein.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I think I did meet with Epstein. And I don't
- 15:27Speaker 1: know whether Steve met with him or was with his lawyers. Question.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Why did you advocate for Mr. Cutler to take his
- 15:33Speaker 1: time to meet with Mr. Epstein? Answer. Steve was running
- 15:37Speaker 1: legal and compliance in the bank. And these were serious allegations.
- 15:41Speaker 1: And the bank was going to exit Epstein more than
- 15:43Speaker 1: it already had. Seemed like Steve. Seemed like the thing
- 15:46Speaker 1: to do was have Steve meet with Epstein himself. Question.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Did you not feel as though Mr. Epstein as a
- 15:53Speaker 1: registered sex offender and someone who pleaded guilty to soliciting
- 15:57Speaker 1: prostitution for minors was a great risk to the bank
- 16:00Speaker 1: and should be removed as a client? Answer. Well, again,
- 16:03Speaker 1: the bank cut off the principal activities that it had
- 16:05Speaker 1: with Epstein. The question is whether Epstein you would choose
- 16:09Speaker 1: to close his checking account or not. Question. Did anyone
- 16:12Speaker 1: else at the bank take steps to defend Mr. Epstein? Answer.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I don't think I took steps to defend Epstein, but
- 16:19Speaker 1: I think his banking team defended him. And I think
- 16:23Speaker 1: what's telling is when Epstein moved his accounts ultimately out
- 16:26Speaker 1: of Morgan, he followed his banking team to Deutsche Bank. Question.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Was Mr. Cutler going to remove Mr. Epstein as a
- 16:32Speaker 1: client before you asked him to sit down with Mr. Epstein? Answer.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I don't know. Question. Reporting indicates that Justin Nelson wrote
- 16:40Speaker 1: a memo trumpeting Epstein's large volume of business with JP
- 16:44Speaker 1: Morgan and noting that despite his status as a sex offender,
- 16:48Speaker 1: he was still clearly well-respected and trusted by some of
- 16:50Speaker 1: the richest people in the world. Did you ever see
- 16:54Speaker 1: this memo? Answer, I know Justin Nelson. I don't know
- 16:57Speaker 1: if I saw that specific memo. Question, did you ever
- 17:01Speaker 1: speak with Mr. Nelson about Mr. Epstein's status as a client? Answer,
- 17:05Speaker 1: I recommended that Justin Nelson be the banker for Jeffrey
- 17:08Speaker 1: Epstein at one point, but I think that was it. Question,
- 17:11Speaker 1: was Justin Nelson also your banker? Answer, he became the
- 17:15Speaker 1: banker to my wife's family, not me. Question, are you
- 17:18Speaker 1: aware of whether Mr. Epstein asked Mr. Nelson to write
- 17:21Speaker 1: this memo? Answer, no. Question, by Mr. Emmer, we've had
- 17:25Speaker 1: another member join. Can she please announce herself for the record?
- 17:30Speaker 1: Congresswoman Luna. Mr. Emmer, Mr. Luna, we understand you have
- 17:34Speaker 1: some questions. Miss Luna, I do, thank you. Thank you
- 17:38Speaker 1: for being here today. I wanted to see, have you
- 17:40Speaker 1: ever made a settlement payment to redacted Staley? No. Question. Okay.
- 17:46Speaker 1: At your position at J.P. Morgan, you had referenced U.S.
- 17:49Speaker 1: intelligence agencies. Can you elaborate further on your interactions with
- 17:53Speaker 1: various agencies? And if so, which agencies were those? Staley,
- 17:57Speaker 1: can you say that again? Luna. You had made a
- 18:01Speaker 1: reference to having contact with U.S. intelligence agencies for your
- 18:05Speaker 1: work at J.P. Morgan. Staley. Yeah. Luna. Can you specify,
- 18:09Speaker 1: as to the agencies, as well as what the nature
- 18:12Speaker 1: of that work may have been? Staley, I believe it
- 18:15Speaker 1: was the State Department and the CIA. Luna, okay. Can
- 18:18Speaker 1: you elaborate further on what they were having you do? Staley, yeah.
- 18:22Speaker 1: This was after 9-11, and the Bin Laden family had
- 18:26Speaker 1: its international banking accounts with J.P. Morgan, and the State
- 18:29Speaker 1: Department and Morgan and I agreed that I should fly
- 18:31Speaker 1: to Saudi Arabia to meet with the Bin Laden family
- 18:34Speaker 1: and tell them that the State Department and Morgan had
- 18:37Speaker 1: recognized that Osama bin Laden was rogue and had been
- 18:40Speaker 1: expelled by the family. Then the family's business with Morgan
- 18:43Speaker 1: would be preserved. Luna, where does the CIA fit into
- 18:47Speaker 1: the conversation? Staley, huh? Luna, where does the CIA fit
- 18:52Speaker 1: into those conversations? Staley, my recollection is the CIA came
- 18:56Speaker 1: to meet me in my office. Luna, with the State Department? Answer,
- 19:00Speaker 1: I'm not sure whether it was the same time or together. Luna,
- 19:04Speaker 1: do you remember who at the State Department- Or who
- 19:06Speaker 1: at the CIA came to meet you? Staley. No. Luna. Okay,
- 19:10Speaker 1: following up on that, were you aware that Jeffrey Epstein
- 19:13Speaker 1: had an alias? Staley. Had a what? Luna. An alias. Staley. No,
- 19:20Speaker 1: I was not. Luna. Okay. He had an alias that
- 19:23Speaker 1: was listed with a Saudi Arabian address. Following that interaction
- 19:27Speaker 1: that you had with the Bin Laden family, did Jeffrey
- 19:29Speaker 1: Epstein ask to meet with you again? Staley. With respect
- 19:33Speaker 1: to the Bin Laden family? Luna. No. Or closely thereafter, Staley,
- 19:37Speaker 1: I don't know about the timing, but I don't think
- 19:39Speaker 1: he met with me with respect to the Bin Laden family. Luna,
- 19:43Speaker 1: did he ever ask you about your travels to that
- 19:45Speaker 1: area or interactions with the family? Staley, he was close.
- 19:50Speaker 1: to a member a member of the royal family in
- 19:52Speaker 1: dubai luna who was staley he ran dubai ports luna
- 19:58Speaker 1: who was a close who was close to a member
- 20:00Speaker 1: staley epstein luna okay staley and i met with the
- 20:05Speaker 1: sheikh who ran the ports of dubai That was the
- 20:08Speaker 1: only really, and then, he had connections in Israel, and
- 20:11Speaker 1: I met senior officials in Israel that Epstein knew. Luna,
- 20:15Speaker 1: who did you meet? Staley, I met Ehud Barak, and
- 20:18Speaker 1: I met Prime Minister Netanyahu. Luna, those were my questions. Ms.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Toland jumps in. Question, and then I just have a
- 20:26Speaker 1: quick follow-up for something we were discussing earlier. You mentioned
- 20:29Speaker 1: that you were not part of the rapid response teams,
- 20:31Speaker 1: or any of the teams overseeing Mr. Epstein's accounts. We
- 20:35Speaker 1: were talking about you being informed of his making of
- 20:37Speaker 1: the suspicious cash withdrawals. Why were you informed of that?
- 20:42Speaker 1: Answer again, I think it was very suspicious. And generally,
- 20:45Speaker 1: the bank would report cash withdrawals like that to the
- 20:48Speaker 1: federal government. And you know, it's just something that generally
- 20:51Speaker 1: the bank would not allow. Question, but you said you
- 20:54Speaker 1: were informed about it. And then had a discussion with Mr. Epstein.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Is that correct? Answer, as I said, I think I
- 21:01Speaker 1: or Marierdos said the bank raised the issue about cash
- 21:05Speaker 1: and there was a problem. Question, so who would have
- 21:08Speaker 1: been informed or informed you about the withdrawals? Answer, I
- 21:11Speaker 1: don't recall exactly who was informing. Ms. Brignac, question, when
- 21:16Speaker 1: did you begin working at Barclays? Answer, in December of 2015. Question,
- 21:21Speaker 1: what was your position? Answer, CEO. Question, what is Barclays? Answer,
- 21:27Speaker 1: it's a major international bank headquartered in London. Question, did
- 21:31Speaker 1: you ever ask Mr. Epstein to assist you in getting
- 21:33Speaker 1: the position at Barclays? Answer, never. Question, it's been reported
- 21:38Speaker 1: that Mr. Epstein enlisted a London power broker to plant
- 21:41Speaker 1: seeds about you with senior bank officials back in 2012.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Did you interview for the position in 2012? Answer, yeah. Question,
- 21:50Speaker 1: and did it go to someone else? Answer, yes. Question,
- 21:54Speaker 1: so the rest of the reporting is correct. Did Mr.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Epstein enlist a London power broker to plant seeds about you? Answer,
- 22:00Speaker 1: I don't know. And I would not have wanted somebody
- 22:02Speaker 1: to lobby on my behalf. Question, you never asked him
- 22:06Speaker 1: to speak with? Gets cut off by Staley? Never. Question,
- 22:10Speaker 1: in 2015, did Barclays ask that you change anything about
- 22:14Speaker 1: your relationship with Mr. Epstein? Answer, no. I took the
- 22:17Speaker 1: decision when I became CEO of Barclays that I'd cut
- 22:21Speaker 1: all contact with Jeffrey Epstein. Question, did you in fact
- 22:24Speaker 1: cut all contact with Mr. Epstein in 2015? Answer, I
- 22:29Speaker 1: had no contact post-2015 with Jeffrey Epstein, direct contact. Brignac,
- 22:35Speaker 1: I'll now enter as Majority Exhibit 8 into the record.
- 22:38Speaker 1: The document is bait stamped with EFTA 0105-5036. It's an
- 22:44Speaker 1: email exchange between your daughter, redacted, and Mr. Epstein from
- 22:48Speaker 1: February 6, 2017. Ms. Brignac will go off record. Now
- 22:54Speaker 1: they come back. Question, do you recognize these emails, Mr. Staley? Answer, yes. Question,
- 23:00Speaker 1: can you describe what's happening in the thread? Answer, again,
- 23:03Speaker 1: I think it's Jeffrey Epstein, unfortunately, trying to contact me
- 23:06Speaker 1: through my daughter. Question, were you aware that Mr. Epstein
- 23:09Speaker 1: was contacting your daughter in 2017? Answer, my understanding is
- 23:14Speaker 1: it happened twice. I was not aware. I don't believe
- 23:17Speaker 1: there was contact before the exchange. Question, why would Mr.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Epstein reach out to Redacted regarding a former J.P. Morgan employee,
- 23:26Speaker 1: Veronique Weil? Answer, again, many years before He was helpful
- 23:32Speaker 1: in her pursuit of physics. So they knew each other.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And it seems like he approached her with respect to
- 23:38Speaker 1: Veronique Weil. Question, did your daughter come to you and
- 23:42Speaker 1: ask you the question? Answer, that's what this email says. Question,
- 23:46Speaker 1: and did you know it was coming from Mr. Epstein? Answer,
- 23:49Speaker 1: I believe so. Question, so Mr. Staley, can we agree
- 23:52Speaker 1: your communication through your daughter to Mr. Epstein? We're in
- 23:55Speaker 1: violation of the agreement you made with Barclays to cut
- 23:58Speaker 1: off communication from with Mr. Epstein after 2015, correct? Answer,
- 24:03Speaker 1: there was not an agreement. What I told Barclays was
- 24:06Speaker 1: that I had not had physical contact with Epstein for
- 24:09Speaker 1: a while, which was true, and I cut off contact
- 24:11Speaker 1: directly with Epstein upon taking the CEO role at Barclays,
- 24:15Speaker 1: which is also true. Question, and then you began communicating
- 24:19Speaker 1: to Mr. Epstein through your daughter redacted. Answer, no, I
- 24:23Speaker 1: did not start communicating with Epstein through my daughter. Question,
- 24:26Speaker 1: you testified you were aware the message from your daughter
- 24:29Speaker 1: was You testified earlier that you were aware that your
- 24:32Speaker 1: daughter's message came from Mr. Epstein, and it reflects in
- 24:36Speaker 1: the documents that you gave Redacted that information. So you
- 24:39Speaker 1: did not cut off contact with Mr. Epstein following 2015, correct? Answer.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Your first thing is that I was trying to contact
- 24:47Speaker 1: Epstein through my daughter. I wasn't trying to contact Epstein
- 24:50Speaker 1: through my daughter. Ms. Luna, I'm back for more questions.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Do you know who Redacted is? Have you heard that name? Staley,
- 24:59Speaker 1: now I have. Luna, okay. So, she read the email.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Snow White was fucked twice as soon as she put
- 25:06Speaker 1: on her costume. Would you say that would be a
- 25:08Speaker 1: predatory statement to make about this image? Staley, what's your question? Luna,
- 25:15Speaker 1: would you say that that statement is a predatory statement
- 25:18Speaker 1: to make about this image? Staley, I don't think it's
- 25:20Speaker 1: a predatory statement. Luna, you don't think it's predatory? Staley, no.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I think someone's assaulting a woman is predatory, yes. Luna,
- 25:28Speaker 1: the question was, do you think that that's a predatory
- 25:32Speaker 1: statement to make about the image? Staley, I don't know
- 25:35Speaker 1: who that person is. Luna, I'm not asking if you
- 25:38Speaker 1: know who the person is. I'm asking if you think
- 25:40Speaker 1: that the statement is predatory to make about this image. Staley,
- 25:45Speaker 1: if that's what, if that's the image the person is
- 25:47Speaker 1: referring to, Luna referring to, yes. Staley, then yes, that
- 25:51Speaker 1: would be a predatory statement. Luna, okay. Going back to
- 25:55Speaker 1: this email correspondence, It appears that Jeffrey Epstein is asking you,
- 25:59Speaker 1: which character would you like next? Do you know what
- 26:02Speaker 1: he's referencing? Answer, I don't. Luna, okay. It says that
- 26:06Speaker 1: you're responding to him, Beauty and the Beast. Can you
- 26:09Speaker 1: refer in Beauty and the Beast? Are you talking about Belle? Staley,
- 26:13Speaker 1: I'm just mentioning Beauty and the Beast. Luna, sir, I
- 26:16Speaker 1: wouldn't laugh at this. Staley, I'm not. Luna, it's very
- 26:20Speaker 1: disturbing to read these emails. So I just, the reason
- 26:23Speaker 1: I'm asking you is because to me, reading this, It
- 26:26Speaker 1: looks like there's trafficking happening. And what I would say is,
- 26:30Speaker 1: this girl looks, she's maybe about 13 or 14 years old.
- 26:34Speaker 1: So if this was written about someone like your child,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I don't think that you would be laughing right now.
- 26:39Speaker 1: And so the point is that we have you here.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Can you give us information and or names for people
- 26:45Speaker 1: that you may know who have harmed these kids? Staley, no,
- 26:48Speaker 1: I don't know anyone. Sullivan, congressperson, I have an objection. Luna,
- 26:53Speaker 1: it's congresswoman. Sullivan, Congresswoman, thank you. But to say from
- 26:58Speaker 1: the picture to guess the age as 13 years old
- 27:01Speaker 1: strikes me as Luna jumps in. I've seen some of
- 27:05Speaker 1: the unredacted photos and these, well, they're children. Sullivan, that's
- 27:09Speaker 1: your view, but I'd like to see them. Luna, well,
- 27:11Speaker 1: you can. I'm sure you'll get the opportunity if this
- 27:14Speaker 1: becomes criminal. Sullivan, thank you. Brignac, we have some pressing follow-ups.
- 27:20Speaker 1: We'll go off the record and we'll come back on
- 27:21Speaker 1: later to ask those. All right, folks, we're going to
- 27:24Speaker 1: wrap up right here. And in the next episode dealing
- 27:26Speaker 1: with the topic we're going to pick up where we
- 27:28Speaker 1: left off. All the information that goes with this episode
- 27:32Speaker 1: can be found in the description box. What's up everyone
- 27:35Speaker 1: and welcome to another episode of the Epstein Chronicles. In
- 27:39Speaker 1: this episode we're getting right back to the Jess Daly
- 27:41Speaker 1: transcript from his trip to Congress. Ms. Brignac, we have
- 27:46Speaker 1: some pressing follow-ups. We'll go off the record and we'll
- 27:49Speaker 1: come back on later to ask those follow-ups. So now
- 27:52Speaker 1: they're back on. Question by redacted. Question Mr. Staley. I'd
- 27:57Speaker 1: like to ask you a few qualifying questions based on
- 28:00Speaker 1: what you said during the minorities first round. You referred
- 28:03Speaker 1: to Mr. Epstein's assistance as mature and also as in
- 28:07Speaker 1: their late 20s or early 30s. We have a different
- 28:10Speaker 1: understanding of his assistance, but given the distinction that you're drawing,
- 28:15Speaker 1: I would like to repeat some of the questions I
- 28:17Speaker 1: asked you, but in the context of his assistance. When
- 28:21Speaker 1: you visited Mr. Epstein's New York home, Were there ever
- 28:25Speaker 1: assistants in the room when you met Mr. Epstein? Answer.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Only that they would occasionally come in and offer coffee
- 28:32Speaker 1: or something like that. They weren't sitting in the room
- 28:34Speaker 1: during the meetings. No. Question. Were there ever assistants sitting
- 28:39Speaker 1: on Mr. Epstein's lap when you talked to him? Answer. No. Question.
- 28:43Speaker 1: We previously talked about your interaction, sexual or otherwise, with
- 28:47Speaker 1: women connected to Mr. Epstein. To be clear, when I
- 28:51Speaker 1: say women connected to Mr. Epstein... I'm including his assistants.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Did you ever introduce any women connected to Mr. Epstein
- 28:59Speaker 1: to anyone in your family? Answer, no. Question, so you
- 29:03Speaker 1: never introduced any of the women connected to Epstein to
- 29:05Speaker 1: your daughters? Answer, no. Question, have you ever had a
- 29:09Speaker 1: conversation with Leon Black about your relationship with Mr. Epstein? Answer,
- 29:14Speaker 1: I think we both knew that we knew Epstein. I
- 29:17Speaker 1: don't know if I had a specific conversation with him. Question,
- 29:21Speaker 1: Did you have a conversation with Mr. Black about Mr.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Epstein's crimes? Answer. I think we were both aware of Mr.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Epstein's crimes. Question. Sure. And did you talk to him
- 29:31Speaker 1: about it? Answer. We may have, but I don't recall
- 29:34Speaker 1: a specific conversation. Question. When would that have been? Answer.
- 29:38Speaker 1: I don't know. Question. do you have any sense for
- 29:41Speaker 1: whether that would have been post-arrest, post-incarceration, or later? Answer,
- 29:46Speaker 1: I think it would have been post-indictment and probably post-arrest. Question,
- 29:51Speaker 1: and do you have any memory of specifically what you
- 29:53Speaker 1: would have talked about? Answer, no. Question, did you have
- 29:57Speaker 1: any conversation with Mr. Black? About women connected to Mr. Epstein? Answer, no. Question,
- 30:03Speaker 1: did you ever meet with Mr. Black in Central Park
- 30:06Speaker 1: to discuss any of these issues? Your relationship with Mr. Epstein, Mr.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Epstein's crimes, or any woman connected to Mr. Epstein? Answer,
- 30:15Speaker 1: not that I remember, no. Question, thank you. Now we
- 30:18Speaker 1: have another person, jumps in, doing the questioning, redacted. Mr. Staley,
- 30:23Speaker 1: you've previously made contradictory statements about your friendship with Mr. Epstein.
- 30:28Speaker 1: For example, you have said, quote, your relationship with Mr.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Epstein was never a personal one, nor one that could
- 30:34Speaker 1: be described as close. But you have also said that
- 30:38Speaker 1: you and Mr. Epstein had a, quote, fairly close relationship.
- 30:42Speaker 1: At one point, you said Mr. Epstein was, quote, a friend.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I would like to clear up some of the confusion
- 30:49Speaker 1: and get a better sense of your friendship with Mr. Epstein.
- 30:52Speaker 1: I'll begin by introducing what will be marked as Minority
- 30:55Speaker 1: Exhibit K. Question, this is six separate email exchanges between
- 31:00Speaker 1: you and Mr. Epstein from the first few weeks of
- 31:03Speaker 1: his sentence at the Palm Beach Soccer. It's from July 10th,
- 31:07Speaker 1: 2008 until September 11th, 2008. The first email, which begins
- 31:12Speaker 1: on the bottom of the page and goes into the
- 31:14Speaker 1: top of the second page, is from you to Mr.
- 31:17Speaker 1: Epstein dated July 10th, 2008, which is just 10 days
- 31:22Speaker 1: into his sentence. In the email, you write, quote, I
- 31:24Speaker 1: miss you. The world is in a tough place. Hang
- 31:27Speaker 1: in there. It appears at this point Mr. Epstein was
- 31:30Speaker 1: a friend. Is that correct? Answer again. My relationship with
- 31:33Speaker 1: Epstein was based on a close professional relationship anchored in business.
- 31:38Speaker 1: But I would use language like friend and close friend. Question.
- 31:42Speaker 1: So you were friends? Answer. I would use language that way, yes.
- 31:46Speaker 1: But it was grounded in the business relationship that we had. Question.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Could you elaborate on what you mean by you would
- 31:52Speaker 1: use language that way? Answer, I often talk to people
- 31:56Speaker 1: that I work with and call them friends and close friends. Question,
- 32:00Speaker 1: so the business, the relationship was grounded in business, but
- 32:03Speaker 1: you transitioned into being friends as well? Answer, I use
- 32:07Speaker 1: the word friend to describe the relationship, but for instance,
- 32:10Speaker 1: you know, he never came to my house. He never
- 32:13Speaker 1: came to social occasions with my family. I would call
- 32:16Speaker 1: that a personal friend. Inaudible, we were tied to business. Question,
- 32:20Speaker 1: so a business friend? Answer, yes. Question, understood. And this
- 32:26Speaker 1: is one of the first emails we have between you
- 32:28Speaker 1: and Mr. Epstein. Your message suggests that you were in
- 32:31Speaker 1: contact often if you missed him after just 10 days
- 32:34Speaker 1: of him being in the Palm Beach stockade. How frequently
- 32:37Speaker 1: were you in touch with Mr. Epstein before he was incarcerated?
- 32:41Speaker 1: Answer again. I think we would talk, you know, once,
- 32:43Speaker 1: twice a week. I'd visit him, you know, once every
- 32:46Speaker 1: other week. That sort of frequency. Question okay. I'd like
- 32:50Speaker 1: to move on to the fourth page of this exhibit.
- 32:52Speaker 1: This is an email from you to Mr. Epstein dated
- 32:55Speaker 1: July 16th, 2008, just one week later. In the email,
- 32:59Speaker 1: you say, quote, Mr. Sullivan jumps in. Just give us
- 33:02Speaker 1: one minute to locate it. Okay, got it. Question, you say, quote,
- 33:06Speaker 1: I'm hoping you're managing. I miss our calls. It's boring
- 33:09Speaker 1: without you around. I will now move on to the
- 33:12Speaker 1: fifth page. In this email from you to Mr. Epstein
- 33:15Speaker 1: dated July 31st, 2008, this is the third email that
- 33:19Speaker 1: you sent to Mr. Epstein in just three weeks. In
- 33:22Speaker 1: this email, you say, quote, I hope you're hanging in there.
- 33:25Speaker 1: I just think of the island and my boat anchored
- 33:28Speaker 1: in front. I do. On page six, this is another
- 33:31Speaker 1: email from you to Mr. Epstein on August 3rd, 2008.
- 33:35Speaker 1: You say, quote, just thinking about you. On the next page,
- 33:38Speaker 1: page seven, you email Mr. Epstein on August 4th, 2008
- 33:41Speaker 1: and say, quote, hang in there. Keep thinking of the island. Finally,
- 33:46Speaker 1: on page eight, you write to Mr. Epstein on September 11th, 2008, saying, quote,
- 33:51Speaker 1: Very tough day today, thinking of you there. With what
- 33:54Speaker 1: I see, it's so unfair. Hang in there, please. Based
- 33:57Speaker 1: on these emails, I think it's fair to say that
- 33:59Speaker 1: you and Mr. Epstein were very close. Would you agree? Answer,
- 34:04Speaker 1: I would repeat what I said before. I think we
- 34:06Speaker 1: had a close professional relationship. I use language like this.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Like many people you deal with in business, at this point,
- 34:13Speaker 1: I was building a boat. He encouraged me to build
- 34:15Speaker 1: the boat. But that's what a lot of this refers to. Question,
- 34:19Speaker 1: was it common for you to email other business friends
- 34:22Speaker 1: saying things like, I miss you? And just thinking about
- 34:25Speaker 1: the island and my boat anchored in front. Answer, well,
- 34:28Speaker 1: there was not many friends that had islands that I
- 34:31Speaker 1: anchored my boat in front of. Question, so the first
- 34:33Speaker 1: part of my question, was it common for you to
- 34:35Speaker 1: email other business friends saying, I miss you? Answer, I
- 34:39Speaker 1: think it would be common that I would mention to
- 34:41Speaker 1: people that I work with that, you know, that I
- 34:43Speaker 1: miss them. Question, so the people that you work with
- 34:46Speaker 1: at JP Morgan, not clients of the bank. Answer, I'm
- 34:49Speaker 1: sure there were some clients that I did this as well,
- 34:51Speaker 1: but I don't know. I couldn't name them for you. Question, okay.
- 34:55Speaker 1: I'll now introduce what's been marked as Minority Exhibit L. Question,
- 35:00Speaker 1: this is an email from you to Mr. Epstein on
- 35:02Speaker 1: December 30th, 2010. Bates number, EFTA 02533765. In this email,
- 35:10Speaker 1: you write, quote, Happy New Year. It's nice to have
- 35:13Speaker 1: you free. Much to come. Please know that I'm your
- 35:16Speaker 1: friend forever. You are very special. To which Mr. Epstein replied, quote, ditto.
- 35:21Speaker 1: What did you mean by much to come? Answer, I
- 35:24Speaker 1: don't recall. Question, you don't recall what you meant? Answer, no. Question,
- 35:28Speaker 1: why did you tell Mr. Epstein that you were a
- 35:30Speaker 1: friend forever? Answer, I think I was showing sympathy to him. Question,
- 35:35Speaker 1: sympathy for what? Answer, I believe this is when he
- 35:38Speaker 1: was getting out of prison. Question, so you felt sympathy
- 35:40Speaker 1: for him at the time, even with the charges that
- 35:43Speaker 1: he was serving time for? Answer, yeah, I thought he
- 35:45Speaker 1: served his time. He had, he had, he had. He
- 35:48Speaker 1: had paid his price. I never imagined that he would
- 35:51Speaker 1: continue to act criminally. Answer, what made Mr. Epstein, quote,
- 35:55Speaker 1: very special to you? Answer again, he had given me
- 35:58Speaker 1: very valuable business advice. He was instrumental in one of
- 36:02Speaker 1: my biggest transactions in my career, the acquisition of Highbridge Capital.
- 36:06Speaker 1: He gave me counsel in my discussion with the bank
- 36:09Speaker 1: about my career. He gave me counsel, so those are
- 36:12Speaker 1: the things. Question, so he was just very special. Because
- 36:16Speaker 1: of what he provided for you in your career? Answer, oh,
- 36:19Speaker 1: I think that's what drove it. I mean, again, he
- 36:21Speaker 1: was instrumental in the most important transaction of my career
- 36:24Speaker 1: up to that point. He gave me a lot of business.
- 36:27Speaker 1: He connected me with, you read the list, an incredible
- 36:29Speaker 1: group of people that helped my career. So yeah, he
- 36:32Speaker 1: was very helpful to me. Question, but this was six
- 36:35Speaker 1: years after the high bridge capital deal. So there was
- 36:38Speaker 1: nothing else that happened in between that time that made
- 36:41Speaker 1: you felt that he was very special to you? Answer, no.
- 36:45Speaker 1: He introduced me to the names that we've talked about.
- 36:47Speaker 1: He introduced me to, he would facilitate when I traveled
- 36:50Speaker 1: overseas to meet with business and country leaders. He did
- 36:53Speaker 1: a lot of things like that. Question, okay. Now we
- 36:57Speaker 1: have another redacted person asking the questions. Question, one quick
- 37:02Speaker 1: follow-up for you, Mr. Staley. When you said that these
- 37:04Speaker 1: things to Mr. Epstein about how you missed him and
- 37:07Speaker 1: how you were thinking about him and how he was
- 37:09Speaker 1: special to you, that you were a friend forever, were
- 37:12Speaker 1: those disingenuous? Because it seems like what you're saying now
- 37:16Speaker 1: is that you didn't mean them. And if that's the case, answer,
- 37:20Speaker 1: I mean, you know, you know, a point of fact
- 37:23Speaker 1: is when I became CEO of Barclays, I completely cut
- 37:26Speaker 1: off all relationship with him and stopped being his friend. Question,
- 37:29Speaker 1: so he was a friend before you became CEO of Barclays? Answer, well, again,
- 37:34Speaker 1: I was responding to the question, was I being disingenuous?
- 37:38Speaker 1: And I was responding to the disingenuous part by saying, no, actually,
- 37:42Speaker 1: I cut him off as a friend. Question, but that
- 37:45Speaker 1: doesn't answer my question. When you said these things to him,
- 37:48Speaker 1: did you mean them at the time? Answer again, I
- 37:50Speaker 1: used diffusive language. The relationship was based on business, as
- 37:54Speaker 1: these emails attest to. But I used the word friendship
- 37:57Speaker 1: with a lot of people. Question, Mr. Staley. In a
- 38:00Speaker 1: question my colleague asked you, what did you mean by quote,
- 38:04Speaker 1: much to come? Correct me if I'm wrong, but you
- 38:06Speaker 1: testified that you were expressing sympathy. Is that right? Answer,
- 38:11Speaker 1: I don't know what I was referring to when I
- 38:12Speaker 1: said much to come. That could have been much to
- 38:15Speaker 1: come in my career, much to come in our discussion
- 38:18Speaker 1: about business and the world. I don't know. Question, but
- 38:21Speaker 1: you told us that this was around the time that Mr.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Epstein was being released from jail. Is that right? Answer,
- 38:27Speaker 1: can you remind, can you show me? Question, sure. This
- 38:30Speaker 1: was Exhibit L, Bates number 3765, bottom right. Answer, and
- 38:34Speaker 1: ask your question again, sir. Question, what you testified to
- 38:38Speaker 1: earlier was around December 30th, 2010. When you wrote to Mr.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Epstein much to come, you told us that you were
- 38:45Speaker 1: expressing sympathy for him because he was being released from incarceration.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Is that right? Answer, my belief is he was released
- 38:52Speaker 1: from incarceration more than a year before the email. Question, great.
- 38:57Speaker 1: So that would have been the prior exhibit. Why were
- 38:59Speaker 1: you expressing sympathy to Mr. Epstein when he was being
- 39:02Speaker 1: released from jail? Answer, where's the sympathy? Question, sir, I'm
- 39:06Speaker 1: just repeating the words that you told us. Answer, oh, okay. Yeah,
- 39:10Speaker 1: you know. Question, you've testified to that multiple times. I
- 39:13Speaker 1: think what we're asking about, Staley cuts him off. You
- 39:15Speaker 1: asked the same question. Years later, I terminated the relationship. Question,
- 39:23Speaker 1: you've testified to that multiple times. I think what we're
- 39:27Speaker 1: asking about, Staley cuts him off. You asked the same
- 39:30Speaker 1: question multiple times, so I'm just giving you the same answer.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Question understood. And I think we have been very clear
- 39:36Speaker 1: that we're asking about your mindset at the time that
- 39:38Speaker 1: you wrote this. And you keep jumping to you've cut
- 39:41Speaker 1: off a relationship in the future. What we're asking about
- 39:45Speaker 1: is your mindset at this time. So sir, again, You
- 39:49Speaker 1: told us that you were expressing sympathy to Mr. Epstein
- 39:52Speaker 1: because he had just been released from incarceration. Why were
- 39:55Speaker 1: you sympathetic to Mr. Epstein and that he was incarcerated? Answer,
- 40:01Speaker 1: I think you know. He obviously pled guilty. He deserved
- 40:04Speaker 1: his incarceration. But that doesn't mean I can't show sympathy
- 40:07Speaker 1: for what he went through. Question, what did he go through? Answer,
- 40:12Speaker 1: but he deserved it. He went to jail. Question, to
- 40:15Speaker 1: be clear, your testimony is that you felt sympathy That
- 40:18Speaker 1: he went to jail? Answer, no, I just felt that. No,
- 40:21Speaker 1: I mean, he rightfully went to jail. And you know,
- 40:24Speaker 1: I'm just expressing sympathy for someone who went through that,
- 40:27Speaker 1: even though he deserved it. Question, thank you. All right, folks,
- 40:31Speaker 1: we're going to wrap up right here. And in the
- 40:33Speaker 1: next episode, we're going to pick up with a follow-up question.
- 40:37Speaker 1: All the information that goes with this episode can be
- 40:39Speaker 1: found in the description box.
