- 0:00Speaker 1: The Propers of the Day According to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, July 22 in the year of our Lord 2026. When he gave the Holy Ghost to the apostles, Jesus had told them to remit sins as he had done. And today the liturgy recalls the ever memorable example of the Savior's mercy towards repentant sinners. Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, was of Magdala in Galilee, whence her name of Magdalene.
- 0:48She was a sinner. Touched by grace, she threw herself at the feet of the Savior. Simon the Pharisee, scandalized, would have repelled her like the haughty men mentioned by the prophet Isaiah, who say, away from me. Approach me not for I am pure. Jesus, on the contrary, defends her against the calumnies of the proud.
- 1:19Admiring the work of divine grace in the soul, henceforth attentive to his commandments while sinful men would still have her fall into sin, he mercifully accepts the offer of her service and secures to her place of honor in his royal court. Repentance has transformed her love. Because she has loved much, many sins are forgiven her. Indeed, it was at her prayer that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. And when after the crucifixion of Jesus at which she was present in the greatest distress, she seeks like the spouse in the canticles where they have laid her divine spouse.
- 2:10Christ calls her by her name and commands her to announce his resurrection to the disciples. Wherefore the cradle is recited on this day as in the masses of the apostles. In the 1960 rubrics, however, the cradle was removed from this mass. Following the example of Magdalene, which according to the fathers represents the service of the church towards Jesus, let us, in a spirit of love and repentance, pour out the treasure of our praises around Jesus present in the Holy Eucharist. Let us surround him on the altar in a spirit of faith which does not fear the pharisaic scandal with all the splendor which becomes the house of God.
- 3:10In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. Sinners have waited to destroy me. But I pay heed to thy decrees, O Lord.
- 3:29Look where I may, all good things must end. Only thy law is wide beyond measure. Blessed are they who pass through life's journey unstained, following the law of the Lord. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning, is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 4:02Sinners have waited to destroy me, but I pay heed to thy decrees, O Lord. Look where I may, all good things must end. Only thy law is wide beyond measure. The Collect, let us pray. May we be assisted, O Lord, we beseech thee, by the intercession of blessed Mary Magdalene, for whom moved by her prayers thou didst bring back her brother Lazarus then dead for four days alive from the grave who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 4:54Amen. A lesson from the canticle of canticles. I rose and traversed the city searching every alleyway and street for him I love so tenderly. But for all my search I could not find him. I met the watchmen who go the city rounds, and asked them whether they had seen my love.
- 5:25Then when I had scarce left them, I found him so tenderly loved. And now that he is mine, I will never leave him till I have brought him into my own mother's house, into the room that saw my birth. Swear to me, maidens of Jerusalem, by the wild things that roam in the woods, by heart and dough, that you will not wake my beloved untimely. Hold me close to thy heart, close as locket or bracelet fits. Not death itself is so strong as love, not the grave itself cruel as love unrequited.
- 6:19The torch that lights it is a blaze of fire. Yes. Love is a fire no floods avail to quench, no rivers to drown. For love, a man will give up all that he has in the world and think nothing of his loss. The gradual.
- 6:52Thou hast been a friend to right, an enemy to wrong, and God, thy own God, has given thee an unction to bring thee pride. Alleluia. Alleluia. Thy lips overflow with gracious utterance. The blessing God has given thee can never fail.
- 7:15Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time, one of the Pharisees invited him to a meal. So he went into the Pharisee's house and took his place at table. And there was then a sinful woman in the city who, hearing that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought a pot of ointment with her and took her place behind him at his feet, weeping.
- 7:52Then she began washing his feet with her tears and drying them with her hair, kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. His host, the Pharisee, saw it and thought to himself, if this man were a prophet, he would know who this woman is that is touching him. And what kind of woman? A sinner. But Jesus answered him thus, Simon, I have a word for thy hearing.
- 8:32Tell it me, master, he said. There was a creditor who had two debtors. One owed him 500 pieces of silver, the other 50. They had no means of paying him and he gave them both their discharge. And now tell me which of them loves him the more.
- 8:59I suppose, Simon answered, that it is the one who had the greater debt discharged. And he said, thou hast judged rightly. Then he turned towards the woman and said to Simon, do you see this woman? I came into your house and you gave me no water for my feet. She has washed my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
- 9:35Thou gavest me no kiss of greeting. She has never ceased to kiss my feet since I entered. Thou didst not pour oil on my head. She has anointed my feet and with ointment. And so I tell thee, if great sins have been forgiven her she has also greatly loved.
- 10:03He loves little who has little forgiven him. Then he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven. And his fellow guests thereupon thought to themselves, who is this? That he even forgives sins. But he told the woman, thy faith has saved thee.
- 10:33Go in peace. The Offeratory The daughters of kings do the honor. At thy right hand stands the queen in a vesture of gold, all hung about with embroidery. The secret. May the glorious merits of blessed Mary Magdalene, we beseech thee, O Lord, render our gifts acceptable to thee as thine only begotten Son mercifully received the homage of the offering which she presented.
- 11:16Who with thee liveth in reignest in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Common Preface Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven, together with the blessed Seraphim, joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.
- 12:21The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 12:43O Lord, my cause is just. Never leave me at the mercy of my oppressors. Prized be every decree of thine. Foresworn be every path of evildoing. The post communion, let us pray.
- 13:07Having received the sole remedy of salvation, thy body and precious blood, O Lord, we beseech thee that by the intercession of Saint Mary Magdalene, we may be delivered from all evils, who live in reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Saint Mary Magdalene, pray for us.
