Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, Welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy, and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:19Happy Tuesday. Let's just get right in to the
- 0:23stories for today because I have 3 for you guys.
- 0:26So the first story that I have is that Harry Styles has split
- 0:29from his girlfriend Taylor Russell.
- 0:32So according to People magazine, Harry Styles and actress Taylor
- 0:36Russell have broken up after less than a year of dating.
- 0:39Harry and Taylor were first speculated to be something back
- 0:43in June 2023 when they were spotted out together for the
- 0:46first time. The next day, Taylor was spotted
- 0:49in the VIP section at Harry's concert in Vienna, and the two
- 0:53spent the following day together as well sightseeing, and they've
- 0:57also been spotted on and off together for the last few
- 0:59months, though it's unclear what happened between the two.
- 1:02A source told people earlier this month that they were going
- 1:05strong. The source said that the two
- 1:08were getting, quote, fairly serious after traveling
- 1:10together, and that both Harry and Taylor were aligned on
- 1:13keeping their relationship private.
- 1:16So there has been, as far as I know, not much else about this.
- 1:21I didn't even really know that they were together.
- 1:24I mean, I guess him and Olivia Wilde, their relationship was
- 1:27like so public and there was just a lot going on with Harry
- 1:32Styles in the media and Olivia Wilde in the media at the time.
- 1:35So I guess we heard about him and Olivia a lot.
- 1:38But obviously when you look at his relationship with Taylor, I
- 1:41barely even knew that he was dating her.
- 1:43So they did do a good job of keeping it private, if that was
- 1:47the purpose. Annabelle said she saw a rumor
- 1:49that he wants kids and Taylor doesn't, which is why they
- 1:53split. But I think that's just like,
- 1:55big speculation, so don't take my word for it, OK?
- 2:00The next story that I have for you guys, this was a story that
- 2:03I missed, that I should have said yesterday that I should
- 2:06have told you guys yesterday, but I missed and I only saw it
- 2:08today. So Lana Del Rey brought Nessa
- 2:10Barrett on stage with her this weekend to perform.
- 2:14So at Hangout Fest over the weekend, Lana Del Rey surprised
- 2:18fans when she brought TikTok star turned singer Nessa Barrett
- 2:21out on stage to sing American Jesus.
- 2:24American Jesus is a single from Nessa's Forever Young tour that
- 2:27wrapped in March 2023. Nessa has long said that Lana is
- 2:31a massive influence on her music and her aesthetic.
- 2:34And I mean that is basically the extent of this story, but I just
- 2:38thought it was so cool. I think we are starting to see a
- 2:42few like key breakout stars from those like early TikTok days and
- 2:47I don't know if anybody considered that Nessa would be
- 2:50one of them. I think she was kind of in, she
- 2:53was so Internet, right? Like, even though she's done
- 2:55music for a long time, she really did not take the fame
- 3:00route in the same way that I feel like the D'amelios or
- 3:03Addison Ray did. You know, she really decided to
- 3:05like hunker down and be like I'm going to be an artist.
- 3:08And she almost like removed herself from the public eye for
- 3:11a bit. So, you know, that's a risk.
- 3:14And I think it's paid off clearly, because it's making
- 3:17people take her music and her as an artist much more seriously.
- 3:22Then I think if she did go down that kind of like take every
- 3:24opportunity that you're handed, become as famous as possible, be
- 3:28as much of an influencer as possible.
- 3:30And we have seen some of the consequence of that.
- 3:33I mean, obviously with the Demilio's like Dixie's music is
- 3:36not taking anywhere near as seriously as Nessa's music.
- 3:39But also when you look at someone like Madison Beer for
- 3:42example, who we have interviewed actually twice on this podcast,
- 3:45which is like so cool, claim to fame for infinite scrawl.
- 3:49But you know, like she built herself such a big influencing
- 3:52career. And I don't know if that was
- 3:53necessarily her fault at first. I know she was trying to be
- 3:56being an artist and then being an influencer, kind of, I don't
- 3:59want to say like it fell in her lap, but it was a natural path
- 4:03for her because she was like so hot and people were really
- 4:07interested in her life. And we kind of saw how being
- 4:10pigeonholed as, like, an influencer really impacts how
- 4:14people take her music if they take her seriously as an artist,
- 4:18even though Madison Beer is one of the like, she has one of the
- 4:20most beautiful voices and she writes her songs and she really
- 4:24is like a true artist. But, you know, that's kind of
- 4:27hindered her success musically. So NASA is doing it well, I
- 4:32think. And this is just really fucking
- 4:34cool. Like, how cool would this be if
- 4:37you were NASA and you've been working towards this for years
- 4:39and you're still so young. And you know, I'm sure there's
- 4:42been many points for her career, especially as a TikTok star and
- 4:46there's been lots of scandal and all of that, you know, where you
- 4:48just kind of felt like maybe this isn't going to work out the
- 4:51way that I wanted it to. Maybe I shouldn't have started
- 4:54posting on TikTok. Maybe I should have tried to go
- 4:56more, you know, traditional route.
- 4:57But it's really cool. So fun for her.
- 5:00So cool. And the fan edits and clips of
- 5:02it all over Twitter and or X or whatever.
- 5:06And TikTok are really, really cool to see.
- 5:09All right. And the last story that I have
- 5:11for you guys. OK, so it seems like Haley
- 5:15Bailey is facing backlash again, and this time for not learning
- 5:20her lesson after the Met Gala scandal.
- 5:23OK, so I'm not going to rehash what happened with the Met Gala
- 5:27scandal. I think first of all, if you
- 5:28guys listen to this podcast, you know, it was everywhere.
- 5:31It was all over the Internet. And I covered it twice on this
- 5:34podcast. But, you know, Haley apologized
- 5:36for the Let the Meat Cake Marie Antoinette video, and it was a
- 5:41very lengthy apology. And you know, she did try to
- 5:44playoff like, oh, I'm just a regular person getting these
- 5:47opportunities. I just, I can't believe what my
- 5:50life has turned into. And everyone was kind of like,
- 5:52you're not really a regular person.
- 5:54Your apartment cost $17,000 a month in rent.
- 5:57But, you know, that aside, I think typically when it comes to
- 6:02a scandal of this magnitude, this got really, really big.
- 6:05And you know, I do believe it will impact her getting invited
- 6:10to different events. I mean, obviously this whole
- 6:12thing kicked off the celebrity block list, like it kicked off
- 6:15like a whole movement against celebrities.
- 6:17So, you know, I think it will be a while until she can recover
- 6:22from this from an industry perspective, but also now from a
- 6:27follower and user perspective because she, you know, just
- 6:31resumed posting as usual, I guess.
- 6:34And of course, people every time they see one of her videos now
- 6:37are commenting under it about the scandal because people are
- 6:40not over it. And that's just, you know,
- 6:42that's just the Internet. That's just how it goes.
- 6:44They're going to post on all of her videos for a while until
- 6:47people forget about it, basically.
- 6:49But now Haley is clapping back at people who are leaving these
- 6:53comments and it is making a lot of people think that she really
- 6:57didn't learn very much from this scandal.
- 6:59So a couple screenshots are that are going around from things
- 7:03that she's commented. The 1st is someone wrote I can't
- 7:06afford cake and she responded but you can afford a phone.
- 7:10I'm sorry, I'm confused. And then the next comment is no
- 7:15one, literally no one in capitals.
- 7:17No one could make me like you. And then she replied, I guess I
- 7:20need to send a couple of people to convince you a couple means
- 7:232IN capital two, like in capital letters.
- 7:27OK, so the cake one, the iPhone cake one very tone deaf, very
- 7:37out of touch. Just very off base.
- 7:40It reminds me of the very invalid argument that people try
- 7:44to make when they talk about somebody who is houseless and
- 7:47they have a phone or someone who is in poverty and they have a
- 7:51phone. You know, you see that all the
- 7:52time, even on TikTok. If people are talking about
- 7:54their financial situation and people will be like, well,
- 7:56you're doing this from a phone. Having a phone is not a luxury
- 8:01in 2024. It is an absolute necessity.
- 8:05For example, jobs, they used to be posted, you know, in the
- 8:10newspaper. I'm sure there's some newspapers
- 8:12that still post them. I'm sure people are going to be
- 8:14like that still exists. OK, how are you going to find a
- 8:17job for 99% of jobs? How are you going to find a job
- 8:20if you don't have access to the Internet?
- 8:23What's the easiest and most affordable way to have access to
- 8:25the Internet is to have a phone. Because a phone.
- 8:28Not only are you paying for like a phone plan 1 phone plan to
- 8:31have access to the Internet, but then you're also in that phone
- 8:34plan getting access to phone calls and texting and staying in
- 8:37touch with your loved ones and you know, being able to do an
- 8:41interview for a job over the phone or over zoom on a phone.
- 8:44You know, iPhones are like, you know, smartphones.
- 8:47They do fucking everything and they are an absolute necessity
- 8:50in 2024 and is such an insane and tone deaf and just like
- 8:55elitist thing to say, like Oh well, you have a phone.
- 8:57So you actually can't be that poor like it is.
- 9:00It's a necessity. It is just full stop.
- 9:03The second comment, the one about her saying like I'll send
- 9:07a couple people. A couple means to.
- 9:08I don't take that as her being snarky.
- 9:10I don't take that as her like trying to say like a couple
- 9:13means to like you know, being like a bitch about it.
- 9:16I see it as her saying you know, because this person said no one
- 9:20could make me like you. So she's saying like I'll send
- 9:23two people then instead of 1 and they'll make, I think it was
- 9:26just her trying to be like funny.
- 9:28But I think this whole situation, I think again this
- 9:31just shows how out of touch sometimes influencers and
- 9:35celebrities and stuff can get. Like I understand the desire to
- 9:39clap back. And if you guys follow this
- 9:41podcast on YouTube specifically, or TikTok, you know I am often
- 9:45clapping back at people in the comments.
- 9:48People leave the worst fucking shit.
- 9:49They comment the most annoying, the most obvious, the rudest,
- 9:53like the most fucking annoying worst shit on content that is
- 9:57free that is given to them for free.
- 9:59So I understand if you have 10 million followers like Haley
- 10:02does and you've just been through a scandal, your comments
- 10:04section is probably really infuriating to scroll through.
- 10:07And even before the scandal, I am sure she just received the
- 10:10most annoying and the rudest comments constantly.
- 10:12That's literally just how these platforms work, unfortunately.
- 10:15But this just feels like PR 101. Like you just went through this
- 10:18major scandal where people were calling you like out of touch
- 10:22elitist. It kicked off a literal like
- 10:25global online movement where people were blocking and
- 10:30unfollowing celebrities. A new word came out of it
- 10:32Digitine, which stands for Digital Guillotine.
- 10:35Anyways, it was like this whole thing, and to not have, like, to
- 10:39not take pause and just like don't look at your comments if
- 10:43they're going to piss you off that much.
- 10:44Like, have some humility. Like, have some perspective on
- 10:49what just happened and how and why you infuriated people and
- 10:53just like, let it go for a little bit, clapping back at the
- 10:58people that are telling you that what has just happened was
- 11:02really not OK Like, that's not going to make people like you.
- 11:05That's not going to bring you back on top.
- 11:07That's not going to be the redemption arc.
- 11:09Getting mad at your audience for genuine criticism.
- 11:13It's not the move anyways. I think this is probably the
- 11:16last time that people are going to be talking about Haley, you
- 11:19know, I think this will soon blow over.
- 11:22It already feels like it's kind of blown over, but you know, she
- 11:26should have just let it blow over.
- 11:28Like, if she had just waited a couple weeks to start
- 11:31interacting again in her comments, this would all be
- 11:33fine. But now it's being brought back
- 11:35up again because, like, she just couldn't stop from jumping in
- 11:38her comments. But honestly, maybe she doesn't
- 11:41care. She might just be so over it at
- 11:42this point. She might just be like,
- 11:44whatever, Think what you want about me.
- 11:46I'm going to clap back if I feel like it.
- 11:48I really don't care who knows. Anyways guys, thank you so much
- 11:51for listening to Mini Scroll. Please remember to rate, review
- 11:54and subscribe if you like this episode if you like the daily
