- 0:20Speaker 1: a heaflump One day, when Christopher Robin and Winnie the
- 0:26Speaker 1: Pooh and Piglet were all talking together. Christopher Robin finished
- 0:30Speaker 1: the mouthful he was eating and said, carelessly, I saw.
- 0:35Speaker 2: A heffolump today, Piglet.
- 0:37Speaker 1: What was it doing, asked Piglet, Just lumping along, said
- 0:42Speaker 1: Christopher Robin.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I don't think it saw me.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I saw one once, said Piglet.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Ath Lease start think I did, he said, Only perhaps
- 0:55Speaker 3: it wasn't, so did.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I, said Pooh, wondering what a heffalump was like. You
- 1:02Speaker 1: don't often see them, said Christopher Robin carelessly. Not now, said.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Piglet, Not at this time of year, said Pooh.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Then they all talked about something else until it was
- 1:18Speaker 1: time for Pooh and Piglet to go home together. At first,
- 1:22Speaker 1: as they stumped along the path which edged the hundred
- 1:25Speaker 1: Acre Wood, they didn't say much to each other, But
- 1:29Speaker 1: when they came to the stream and had helped each
- 1:32Speaker 1: other across the stepping stones and were able to walk
- 1:35Speaker 1: side by side again over the heather. They began to
- 1:38Speaker 1: talk in a friendly way about this and that, and
- 1:42Speaker 1: Piglet said.
- 1:44Speaker 3: If you see what I mean, Pio, and Pooh.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Said, it's just what I think myself Piglet. And Piglet said.
- 1:53Speaker 3: But on the other hand, Poo, we must remember, and.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Pooh said, quite true, Piglet, although I had forgotten it
- 2:02Speaker 4: for the moment.
- 2:04Speaker 1: And then, just as they came to the six pine trees,
- 2:08Speaker 1: Pooh looked round to see that nobody else was listening,
- 2:12Speaker 1: and said, in a very solemn voice.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Piglet, I have decided something.
- 2:19Speaker 3: What have you decided, Pao, I.
- 2:21Speaker 4: Have decided to catch a heffe lump.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Poo nodded his head several times as he said this,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and waited for Piglet to.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Say how, or Pooh, you couldn't.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Or something helpful of that sort, but Piglet said nothing.
- 2:42Speaker 1: The fact was Piglet was wishing that he had thought
- 2:45Speaker 1: about it first. I shall do it, said Pooh, after
- 2:50Speaker 1: waiting a little longer.
- 2:52Speaker 4: By means of a trap. And it must be a
- 2:55Speaker 4: cunning trap, so you will have to help me.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Piglet, Pao said Piglet, feeling quite happy again. Now I will,
- 3:06Speaker 1: And then he said how shall we do it?
- 3:10Speaker 4: And Pooh said that's just it.
- 3:14Speaker 1: How and then they sat down together to think it out.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Pooh's first idea was that they should dig a very
- 3:22Speaker 1: deep pit, and then the Heffalump would come along and
- 3:27Speaker 1: fall into the pit. And why, said Piglet, Why what,
- 3:34Speaker 1: said Pooh?
- 3:35Speaker 3: Why would he fall in?
- 3:37Speaker 1: Pooh rubbed his nose with his paw and said that
- 3:41Speaker 1: the Huffalump might be walking along, humming a little song
- 3:45Speaker 1: and looking up at the sky wondering if it would rain,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and so he wouldn't see the very deep pit until
- 3:52Speaker 1: he was half way down, when it would be too late.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Piglet said that this was a very good trap, but
- 3:59Speaker 1: supposing it were raining already, Pooh rubbed his nose again
- 4:03Speaker 1: and said that he hadn't thought of that, And then
- 4:06Speaker 1: he brightened up and said that if it were raining already,
- 4:09Speaker 1: the Hefflump would be looking at the sky wondering if
- 4:13Speaker 1: it would clear up, and so he wouldn't see the
- 4:16Speaker 1: very deep pit until he was half way down, when
- 4:19Speaker 1: it would be too late. Piglet said that now at
- 4:22Speaker 1: this point had been explained, he thought it was a
- 4:25Speaker 1: cunning trap. Pooh was very proud when he heard this,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and he felt that the heffalump was as good as
- 4:31Speaker 1: caught already. But there was just one other thing which
- 4:36Speaker 1: had to be thought about, and it was this, Where
- 4:40Speaker 1: should they dig the very deep pit? Piglet said that
- 4:45Speaker 1: the best place would be somewhere where a heffalump was
- 4:49Speaker 1: just before he fell into it, only about a foot
- 4:53Speaker 1: farther on.
- 4:55Speaker 4: But then he would see us digging it, said Pooh.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Not to feel looking at.
- 5:01Speaker 4: The sky, he would suspect, said Pooh, if he happened
- 5:07Speaker 4: to look down.
- 5:09Speaker 1: He thought for a long time, and then added, sadly.
- 5:15Speaker 4: It isn't as easy as I thought. I suppose that's
- 5:19Speaker 4: why half a lumps hardly ever get caught.
- 5:23Speaker 1: That must be said Piglet. They sighed and got up,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and when they had taken a few gorse prickles out
- 5:31Speaker 1: of themselves, they sat down again, And all the time
- 5:35Speaker 1: Pooh was saying to himself.
- 5:37Speaker 4: If only I could think of something, for.
- 5:41Speaker 1: He felt sure that a very clever brain could catch
- 5:45Speaker 1: a heavlump if only he knew the right way to
- 5:48Speaker 1: go about it.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Suppose he said to pig Lit, you wanted to catch me,
- 5:58Speaker 4: how would you do it.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Well, said Piglet, I should do it like this.
- 6:04Speaker 3: I should make a trap, and I should put the
- 6:07Speaker 3: jar of honey in the trap, and you would smell it,
- 6:10Speaker 3: and you would go in after it, and and I would.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Go in after it, said Pooh excitedly, only very carefully
- 6:21Speaker 4: so as to not hurt myself. And I would get
- 6:24Speaker 4: to the jar of honey, and I should lick round
- 6:27Speaker 4: the edges first of all, pretending that there wasn't any more,
- 6:32Speaker 4: you know, And then I should walk away and think
- 6:36Speaker 4: about it a little, and then I should come back
- 6:39Speaker 4: and start looking in the middle of the jar, and.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Then yes, well, never mind about it. There you would be,
- 6:47Speaker 3: and there I would catch you. Now, the first thing
- 6:50Speaker 3: to think of is what do hef lumps like? I
- 6:53Speaker 3: should think acorns? Shouldn't you well get a lot of
- 6:58Speaker 3: I say, wake up pail.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Pooh, who had gone into a happy dream, woke up
- 7:04Speaker 1: with a start and said that honey was a much
- 7:07Speaker 1: more trappy thing than hacorns. Piglet didn't think so, and
- 7:11Speaker 1: they were just going to argue about it. When Piglet
- 7:14Speaker 1: remembered that if they put acorns in the trap, he
- 7:18Speaker 1: would have to find the acorns. But if they put honey,
- 7:22Speaker 1: then Pooh would have to give up some of his
- 7:24Speaker 1: own honey. So he said, all right, honey. Then just
- 7:29Speaker 1: as Pooh remembered it too and was going to say,
- 7:32Speaker 1: all right, hacorns, honey, said Piglet to himself in a
- 7:38Speaker 1: thoughtful way, as if it were now settled.
- 7:42Speaker 3: I'll dig the pit while you go and get the honey.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Very well, said Pooh, and he stumped off. As soon
- 7:52Speaker 1: as he got home. He went to the larder and
- 7:55Speaker 1: he stood on a chair and took down a very
- 7:58Speaker 1: large jar of honey from the top shelf. It had
- 8:02Speaker 1: hed you and n y written on it, but just
- 8:06Speaker 1: to make sure, he took off the paper cover and
- 8:09Speaker 1: looked at it, and it looked just like honey.
- 8:13Speaker 4: But you can never tell, said Pooh. I remember my
- 8:18Speaker 4: uncle saying ones that he had seen cheese this color.
- 8:23Speaker 1: So he put his tongue in and took a large lick.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Yes, he said, it is no doubt about that, And honey,
- 8:35Speaker 4: I should say, right down to the bottom of the jar, unless,
- 8:41Speaker 4: of course, he said, somebody put cheese in the bottom
- 8:47Speaker 4: just for a joke. Perhaps I had better go a
- 8:51Speaker 4: little further, just in case, in case any heffalumps don't
- 8:59Speaker 4: like cheese, same as me.
- 9:04Speaker 1: And he gave a deep sigh.
- 9:08Speaker 4: I was right, It is honey, right the way down.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Having made certain of this, he took the jar back
- 9:18Speaker 1: to Piglet, and Piglet looked up from the bottom of
- 9:21Speaker 1: his very deep pit and said, got it. And Pooh said.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Yes, but it isn't quite a full.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Jar, and he threw it down to Piglet, and Piglet said,
- 9:36Speaker 1: now it isn't.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Is that all you've got left?
- 9:40Speaker 1: And Pooh said yes, because it was so. Piglet put
- 9:46Speaker 1: the jar at the bottom of the pit and climbed out,
- 9:50Speaker 1: and they went off home together. Well, good night, Pio,
- 9:55Speaker 1: said Piglet when they had got to Pooh's house.
- 9:59Speaker 3: And six o'clock tomorrow morning. Buy the pine trees and
- 10:03Speaker 3: see how many heflimps we've got on trap six.
- 10:07Speaker 4: O'clock, Piglet, And have you got any string?
- 10:10Speaker 3: Now? Why do you want a string.
- 10:13Speaker 4: To leave them home with?
- 10:15Speaker 3: Oh? I think hevulumps come if you whistle.
- 10:19Speaker 4: Some do and some don't. You can never tell with
- 10:23Speaker 4: heff lumps, well, good night.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Good night, and off Piglet trotted to his house. Trespassers
- 10:31Speaker 1: w while Pooh made his preparations for bed. Some hours later,
- 10:38Speaker 1: just as the night was beginning to steal away, Pooh
- 10:41Speaker 1: woke up suddenly with a sinking feeling. He had had
- 10:45Speaker 1: that sinking feeling before, and he knew what it meant.
- 10:50Speaker 1: He was hungry, so he went to the larder and
- 10:54Speaker 1: he stood on a chair and reached up to the
- 10:57Speaker 1: top shelf and found nothing.
- 11:02Speaker 4: That's funny, he thought, I know I had a jar
- 11:06Speaker 4: of honey there, a full jar full of honey, right
- 11:11Speaker 4: up to the top, and it had honey written on it,
- 11:16Speaker 4: so that I should know it was honey. That's very funny.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And then he began to wander up and down, wondering
- 11:25Speaker 1: where it was, and murmuring a murmur to himself.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Like this, it's very funny, very funny, because I know
- 11:35Speaker 4: I had some honey because it had a label on
- 11:39Speaker 4: saying honey, A gluptuous full of pot too. And I
- 11:45Speaker 4: don't know where it's got to. No, I don't know
- 11:50Speaker 4: where it's gone. Well, it's funny.
- 11:55Speaker 1: He had murmured this to himself three times in a
- 11:58Speaker 1: singing sort of way, when suddenly he remembered he had
- 12:03Speaker 1: put it into the cunning trap to catch the heffalump bother, said, Pooh.
- 12:11Speaker 4: It all comes of trying to be kind to heffalumps.
- 12:14Speaker 1: And he got back into bed, but he couldn't sleep.
- 12:19Speaker 1: The more he tried to sleep, the more he couldn't.
- 12:23Speaker 1: He tried counting sheep, which is sometimes a good way
- 12:26Speaker 1: of getting to sleep, and as that was no good,
- 12:29Speaker 1: he tried counting heffalumps, and that was worse, because every
- 12:35Speaker 1: hefflump that he counted was making straight for a pot
- 12:39Speaker 1: of Pooh's honey and eating it all. For some minutes,
- 12:45Speaker 1: he lay there miserably, But when the five hundred and
- 12:48Speaker 1: eighty seventh heffalump was licking its jaws and saying to itself,
- 12:54Speaker 1: very good honey.
- 12:55Speaker 2: This.
- 12:56Speaker 4: I don't know when I've tasted.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Better, Pooh could bear it no longer. He jumped out
- 13:03Speaker 1: of bed. He ran out of the house, and he
- 13:06Speaker 1: ran straight to the six pine trees. The sun was
- 13:12Speaker 1: still in bed, but there was a lightness in the
- 13:15Speaker 1: sky over the hundred acre wood, which seemed to show
- 13:18Speaker 1: that it was waking up and would soon be kicking
- 13:21Speaker 1: off the clothes. In the half light, the pine trees
- 13:25Speaker 1: looked cold and lonely, and the very deep pit seemed
- 13:30Speaker 1: deeper than it was. And Pooh's jar of honey at
- 13:33Speaker 1: the bottom was something mysterious, a shape and no more.
- 13:38Speaker 1: But as he got nearer to it, his nose told
- 13:41Speaker 1: him that it was indeed honey, and his tongue came
- 13:45Speaker 1: out and began to polish up his mouth ready for it. Bother,
- 13:51Speaker 1: said Pooh as he got his nose inside the.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Jar, A half a lump has been eating it.
- 13:57Speaker 1: And then he thought a little, and he.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Said, oh, no, I did I forgot.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Indeed he had eaten most of it, but there was
- 14:09Speaker 1: a little left at the very bottom of the jar.
- 14:12Speaker 1: And he pushed his head right in and began to
- 14:16Speaker 1: lick by and by Piglet woke up. As soon as
- 14:21Speaker 1: he woke he said to himself. Oh, Then he said bravely, yes,
- 14:29Speaker 1: and then still more bravely, what so? But he didn't
- 14:34Speaker 1: feel very brave, for the word which was really jiggeting
- 14:38Speaker 1: about in his brain was heffalumps? What was a heflump like?
- 14:45Speaker 1: Was it fierce? Did it come when you whistled, And
- 14:49Speaker 1: how did it come? Was it fond of pigs at all?
- 14:54Speaker 1: If it was fond of pigs, did it make any
- 14:57Speaker 1: difference what sort of pig? Supposing it was fierce with pigs,
- 15:03Speaker 1: would it make any difference if the pig had a
- 15:05Speaker 1: grandfather called trespassers? Willyum. He didn't know the answer to
- 15:11Speaker 1: any of these questions. And he was going to see
- 15:14Speaker 1: his first hevlump in about an hour from now. Of course,
- 15:18Speaker 1: who would be with him? And it was much more
- 15:21Speaker 1: friendly with two. But suppose hevlumps were very fierce with
- 15:26Speaker 1: pigs and bears. Wouldn't it be better to pretend that
- 15:31Speaker 1: he had a headache and couldn't go up to the
- 15:34Speaker 1: six pine trees this morning? But then suppose that it
- 15:38Speaker 1: was a very fine day and there was no hevlump
- 15:42Speaker 1: in the trap here he would be in bed all
- 15:45Speaker 1: the morning, simply wasting his time for nothing. What should
- 15:51Speaker 1: he do? And then he had a clever idea. He
- 15:56Speaker 1: would go up very quietly to the six pine trees. Now,
- 16:01Speaker 1: peep very cautiously into the trap and see if there
- 16:05Speaker 1: was a hefflump there, And if there was, he would
- 16:09Speaker 1: go back to bed and if there wasn't, he wouldn't,
- 16:14Speaker 1: so off he went. At first he thought that there
- 16:17Speaker 1: wouldn't be a hefflump in the trap, and then he
- 16:20Speaker 1: thought that there would, And as he got nearer he
- 16:24Speaker 1: was sure that there would, because he could hear it
- 16:27Speaker 1: heffalumping about it like anything.
- 16:31Speaker 3: Oh dear, oh dear, oh.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Dear, said Piglet to himself, and he wanted to run away,
- 16:38Speaker 1: but somehow, having got so near, he felt that he
- 16:42Speaker 1: must just see what a heffalump was like. So he
- 16:46Speaker 1: crept to the side of the trap and looked in,
- 16:51Speaker 1: and all the time Winnie the Poo had been trying
- 16:54Speaker 1: to get the honey jar off his head. The more
- 16:57Speaker 1: he shook it, the more tightly it stuck. Bother, he
- 17:03Speaker 1: said inside the jar, and oh help, and mostly ow,
- 17:12Speaker 1: and he tried bumping it against things, but as he
- 17:15Speaker 1: couldn't see what he was bumping it against, it didn't
- 17:19Speaker 1: help him. And he tried to climb out of the trap,
- 17:22Speaker 1: but as he could see nothing but jar, and not
- 17:25Speaker 1: much of that, he couldn't find his way. So at
- 17:29Speaker 1: last he lifted up his head, jar and all, and
- 17:33Speaker 1: made a loud, roaring noise of sadness and despair. And
- 17:38Speaker 1: it was at that moment that Piglet looked down. Help Help,
- 17:43Speaker 1: cried Piglet.
- 17:45Speaker 3: A heufflam, a horrible hefflam.
- 17:48Speaker 1: And he scampered off as hard as he could, still
- 17:51Speaker 1: crying out.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Help help, A horrible hefflim half huff a hella the
- 17:57Speaker 3: horrimp hella rump.
- 18:02Speaker 1: And he didn't stop crying and scampering until he got
- 18:05Speaker 1: to Christopher Robin's house.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Whatever's the matter, Piglet.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Said Christopher Robin, who was just getting up. Hef, said Piglet,
- 18:16Speaker 1: breathing so hard that he could hardly speak.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Eh hef hef h heff A lump where up there?
- 18:26Speaker 1: Said Piglet, waving his paw.
- 18:29Speaker 2: What did it look like like?
- 18:31Speaker 3: Like? It had the biggest head you've ever saw, Christopher Robin,
- 18:36Speaker 3: A great enormous thing like like nothing a huge big well,
- 18:41Speaker 3: like I don't know, like an enormous big nothing like a.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Jar well, said Christopher Robin, putting on his shoes.
- 18:51Speaker 2: I shall go and look at it. Come on.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Piglet wasn't afraid if he had Christopher Robin with him,
- 18:58Speaker 1: so off they went.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I could hear it, cat, you.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Said Piglet, anxiously as they got near. I can hear something,
- 19:08Speaker 1: said Christopher Robin. It was Pooh bumping his head against
- 19:12Speaker 1: a tree root he had found there, said Piglet, Isn't
- 19:18Speaker 1: it awful? And he held on tight to Christopher Robin's hand.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Suddenly Christopher Robin began to laugh, and he laughed, and
- 19:29Speaker 1: he laughed and he laughed, And while he was still laughing,
- 19:35Speaker 1: crash went the heffelum's head against the tree root. Smesh
- 19:40Speaker 1: went the jar, and out came Pooh's head again. Then
- 19:45Speaker 1: Piglet saw what a foolish piglet he had been, and
- 19:49Speaker 1: he was so ashamed of himself that he ran straight
- 19:52Speaker 1: off home and went to bed with a headache. But
- 19:56Speaker 1: Christopher Robin and Pooh went home to breakfast together. Oh bear,
- 20:02Speaker 1: said Christopher Robin.
- 20:05Speaker 2: How I do love you?
- 20:07Speaker 4: So do I said Pooh. End of Chapter five
