- 0:26Speaker 1: added two more staff members, this news breaking here on Wednesday,
- 0:33Speaker 1: one and an on field coach, the other a support
- 0:37Speaker 1: staff member. Let's start with the on field coach first.
- 0:40Speaker 1: That's Phil Galliano and he didn't have to look very far.
- 0:43Speaker 1: So Phil Galliano has been promoted to special teams coordinator.
- 0:46Speaker 1: He had previously been the assistant special teams coach in
- 0:50Speaker 1: New Orleans since twenty nineteen, so he was Darrenrizzy's assistant
- 0:55Speaker 1: special teams coordinator, and then of course Darreon Rizzy was
- 0:57Speaker 1: promoted to interim head coach and now Aaron Rizzy is
- 1:01Speaker 1: the special teams coach with the with the Denver Broncos
- 1:04Speaker 1: having not gotten the new Orleans Saints job. So Galliano
- 1:08Speaker 1: promoted from within, and I think there's and it's an
- 1:13Speaker 1: interesting paradigm something we talked about with James Hurst when
- 1:16Speaker 1: he was here, about promoting from within or bringing in
- 1:20Speaker 1: new guys. And I'm paraphrase. Maybe we can get that
- 1:22Speaker 1: audio from Hurst talking about this, and it was primarily
- 1:25Speaker 1: through the lens of the head coach, but I was
- 1:28Speaker 1: asking him the difference of promoting from within or or
- 1:32Speaker 1: bringing in new people, and the way he he sort
- 1:39Speaker 1: of said it was when you promote from within, and
- 1:42Speaker 1: it was almost more like he was looking at it
- 1:44Speaker 1: from the other staff members, like a Dennis Allen. Dennis
- 1:48Speaker 1: Allen was the other staff members peers and then he
- 1:50Speaker 1: became their boss, and that was a very difficult dynamic
- 1:53Speaker 1: as supposed to bringing in entire an entirely new staff.
- 1:57Speaker 1: This is one where Phil Galliano was all already an assistant.
- 2:02Speaker 1: So he's peers with the other guys on staff. Now
- 2:05Speaker 1: he's just promoted to the special teams coordinator from assistant
- 2:08Speaker 1: Special teams coordinator or assistant special teams coach. Now he's
- 2:12Speaker 1: just running that department there. Look, the Saints were actually
- 2:17Speaker 1: better on special teams a year ago. In some components
- 2:20Speaker 1: Blake group, he made eighty seven percent of his field goals.
- 2:22Speaker 1: That was fifteenth, so right in the middle of the NFL.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Last year, Matthew Hayball did not have an awesome year.
- 2:27Speaker 1: His average punt was forty four yards, which was thirtieth
- 2:31Speaker 1: in the NFL and punting average. Your return game when
- 2:35Speaker 1: Rashid Shaheed was healthy was very good. Shaheed was fourteenth
- 2:39Speaker 1: in kickoff returns. He was first in the NFL in
- 2:41Speaker 1: punt returns. Then, of course his season was lost when
- 2:44Speaker 1: he had the injury. But you were very good in
- 2:47Speaker 1: the return game a group he's been consistent. You didn't
- 2:49Speaker 1: punt it particularly well. But if this is a guy
- 2:53Speaker 1: that has the respect of the locker room, knows some
- 2:55Speaker 1: of the talent, is someone that Kellen Moore is comfortable
- 2:58Speaker 1: with cool, I'm good with it. The other thing that's
- 3:03Speaker 1: pretty clear here is with Kevin Petullo being hired by
- 3:08Speaker 1: Philly as their new offensive coordinator, that opens the door
- 3:12Speaker 1: for dougnus Meyer. That deal to get done, and we
- 3:15Speaker 1: heard the news on Tuesday that the Saints were finalizing
- 3:17Speaker 1: a contract with dougnas Meyer to make him the team's
- 3:20Speaker 1: offensive coordinator. Of course, nothing's done until it's done, inks,
- 3:24Speaker 1: try on the contract and all that sort of stuff.
- 3:26Speaker 1: But this does because if nus Meyer were staying in Philly,
- 3:33Speaker 1: it would have been a very logical choice for Nick
- 3:37Speaker 1: Sirianni to promote dougnas Meyer internally to offensive coordinator with
- 3:43Speaker 1: Kellen Moore leaving. So Kellen Moore now the Saints head coach,
- 3:46Speaker 1: word being that he's finalizing a deal to bring us
- 3:48Speaker 1: Meyer to New Orleans. Then he promotes Kevin Petulah, who
- 3:51Speaker 1: had been the associate head coach in Philly with the Eagles.
- 3:56Speaker 1: So again I think we knew this was going to happen.
- 3:59Speaker 1: With nus Meyer be coming the OC. This effectively confirms
- 4:02Speaker 1: that this is absoutely gonna happen. We're just waiting on
- 4:05Speaker 1: the announcement now. And then the other coordinator position, the
- 4:09Speaker 1: defensive coordinator job, we're still assuming will be Brandon Staley,
- 4:11Speaker 1: but the first coordinator job is filled, it's Phil Galliano.
- 4:15Speaker 1: He'll be the special teams coordinator. You're promoted from within,
- 4:18Speaker 1: all signs reporting to the Doug nus Meyer contract being
- 4:20Speaker 1: done and Doug nuss Meyer becoming the offensive coordinator. And
- 4:23Speaker 1: then we're waiting and assuming that Brandon Staley will be
- 4:26Speaker 1: the defensive coordinator. And just a reminder for anybody who
- 4:28Speaker 1: hasn't heard me say it yet, with a thirty six
- 4:31Speaker 1: year old first time head coach, I do believe that
- 4:38Speaker 1: having experienced staff members and coordinators and head coaches on
- 4:45Speaker 1: staff is a great benefit to Kellen Moore, who can
- 4:48Speaker 1: probably handle a lot of the specifics of being a
- 4:51Speaker 1: head coach that maybe he's not familiar with. So I
- 4:53Speaker 1: think the Brandon Staley higher would be awesome if that's
- 4:56Speaker 1: where ultimately this lands. And you know the other thing
- 5:00Speaker 1: that we talked about with Hurst when I asked him,
- 5:03Speaker 1: Hurst's thirty three year old and Kellen Moore's thirty six.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And you have guys on the roster like Derek Carr
- 5:11Speaker 1: and to Mario Davis and Cameron Jordan who are all
- 5:14Speaker 1: right there at thirty five thirty six years old about
- 5:16Speaker 1: the same as Kellen Moore. You know, I think we
- 5:22Speaker 1: probably make too big of a deal of the age thing,
- 5:26Speaker 1: just as far as how that dynamic would work. Just
- 5:29Speaker 1: think about wherever you work, like wherever that is. It
- 5:34Speaker 1: is actually more common in our professional lives that we
- 5:42Speaker 1: are around the same age of our boss, supervisor, manager, whatever,
- 5:49Speaker 1: like that's that's a very common thing. I mean when
- 5:54Speaker 1: you're a young person and if you're working for the
- 5:56Speaker 1: first time, like you're just out of college at twenty
- 5:58Speaker 1: two and you get your first big boy or big
- 6:00Speaker 1: girl job, yeah, your manager is probably gonna be older
- 6:03Speaker 1: than you. But for all of us, at some point
- 6:05Speaker 1: in our lives, when we spend five, seven, ten years
- 6:08Speaker 1: in our professional careers, we're gonna have managers that are
- 6:11Speaker 1: around our age, that are our peers, that are also
- 6:15Speaker 1: our manager. So I think that part of it is
- 6:19Speaker 1: probably overgrown, overblown. You either can or you can't. And
- 6:23Speaker 1: Kellen Moore is getting his first opportunity to show that
- 6:25Speaker 1: he can be a head coach. But I do think
- 6:28Speaker 1: just the dynamic of the age of the coach relative
- 6:31Speaker 1: to the players, I think that part of the conversation
- 6:34Speaker 1: is probably a little overstated or overblown. So Phil Galiano,
- 6:38Speaker 1: special teams coordinator, the other higher that was announced I
- 6:42Speaker 1: shouldn't sa announced. It's been reported. It's not been announced
- 6:45Speaker 1: yet by the New Orleans Saints. It's being reported, And
- 6:47Speaker 1: it was Tom Pelo Serro who had at first was
- 6:50Speaker 1: that Kellen Moore is bringing a former Eagles staffer, Ted Rath,
- 6:54Speaker 1: with him to New Orleans now. Ted Rath was the
- 6:57Speaker 1: Eagles Director of Sports Performance from twenty to twenty twenty three,
- 7:01Speaker 1: so the year that More just spent in Philly, Rath
- 7:05Speaker 1: was already gone. He was not in Philly this year,
- 7:10Speaker 1: but interestingly enough, ted Rath kind of became famous or
- 7:15Speaker 1: infamous as the get back guy on when he was
- 7:19Speaker 1: with the Rams. There was an NFL Films video where
- 7:22Speaker 1: he's the one following around Sean McVay, like pulling him
- 7:26Speaker 1: away from the sideline. And he was the get back
- 7:28Speaker 1: guy on for the Rams on the sideline, like walking
- 7:32Speaker 1: the sideline telling everybody, you'll get back, get back, get back.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Do you do you have that photo? Pull out of there?
- 7:37Speaker 1: It is for those watching, there's the photo you go
- 7:39Speaker 1: if you can go full screen with a poly like
- 7:41Speaker 1: where he's If you if you saw the clip, you
- 7:44Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about. He's the guy, young, fit
- 7:46Speaker 1: guy who was like pulling McVeigh back and yelling you
- 7:48Speaker 1: get back. He's the get back guy on the sideline,
- 7:51Speaker 1: but apparently super successful. As the director of Sports Science,
- 7:55Speaker 1: he'd also spend time with the Dolphins in addition to
- 7:58Speaker 1: the Rams, and in twenty twenty three the Eagles. So
- 8:01Speaker 1: now he'll be in New Orleans. And apparently this was
- 8:04Speaker 1: a situation where even though Rath was gone from Philly
- 8:08Speaker 1: this year, Kellen Moore was there and apparently enough people
- 8:12Speaker 1: on staff had enough good things to say about him
- 8:14Speaker 1: that Moore was interested in bringing him to New Orleans.
- 8:16Speaker 1: So this is a support staff member. And listen, we
- 8:18Speaker 1: have all had these questions about the New Orleans Saints
- 8:21Speaker 1: and their injuries, and I think sometimes injuries are bad luck.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Paulson and Debo breaking his leg, being leg whipped is
- 8:30Speaker 1: bad luck you. Taysom Hill taking a shot on the
- 8:34Speaker 1: knee and tearing every ligament in his knee, that's just
- 8:37Speaker 1: bad football fortune. It's part of the thing that happens
- 8:40Speaker 1: in a violent collision sport. Kendre Miller pulling a hammy
- 8:45Speaker 1: the first drill of training camp, Eric McCoy having groin issues,
- 8:53Speaker 1: like those types of things. The soft tissue things are
- 8:56Speaker 1: the ones that feel super provac pnnible. And that's where
- 9:01Speaker 1: I feel like I wonder if the training staff, director
- 9:05Speaker 1: of sports science, all that sort of stuff, if maybe
- 9:08Speaker 1: the Saints aren't in line with where they should be.
- 9:10Speaker 1: You know, Sean Payton kind of threw shade at New
- 9:12Speaker 1: Orleans a few weeks back in a press conference when
- 9:15Speaker 1: we talked about this and he lauded his staff and
- 9:23Speaker 1: Bo Lowry, who Bo had been at LSU had been
- 9:27Speaker 1: at the times of New Orleans. Sean pay when he
- 9:29Speaker 1: got the job in Denver, hired bow Away from LSU
- 9:32Speaker 1: to bring in there. In Denver, they've had the lowest
- 9:35Speaker 1: rate of incident of injury the last two years in Denver. Well,
- 9:39Speaker 1: you've got a great staff that knows intimately how to
- 9:43Speaker 1: work on preventative maintenance and things like that. So hopefully
- 9:47Speaker 1: that's something that Ted Rath will bring to the New
- 9:50Speaker 1: Orleans Saints. So a couple more hires for Kellen Moore
- 9:53Speaker 1: as he's taken away right, Most every other staff has
- 9:57Speaker 1: already done all of this work, but the Saints had
- 10:00Speaker 1: to wait as Kellen Moore was in the Super Bowl.
- 10:02Speaker 1: So you've only had Kellen Moore in place now. He
- 10:05Speaker 1: was introduced a week ago. A week ago tomorrow was
- 10:08Speaker 1: the introductory of press conference, so been less been right
- 10:11Speaker 1: a week since he was formally hired, So in a
- 10:14Speaker 1: week he's assembling staff and conducting interviews, assembling his staff,
- 10:17Speaker 1: and the next they'll turn to to the roster and
- 10:20Speaker 1: what they're going to do as far as getting this
- 10:23Speaker 1: thing within cap compliance so they can go to in
- 10:26Speaker 1: a free agency knowing what they have to spend with,
- 10:28Speaker 1: maybe they don't have to spend
