  What how did God get you started in business?

  Oh boy.

  Well, you I think you know our friend my friend Nate Bailey.

  And Nate and I have been friends for about fifteen years.
• 0:23
  And um about a year and a half ago, he was on a call that I think you get on to the uh Justin's call.
• 0:30
  And so he he said, Hey, I think you need to get on this call.
• 0:34
  He goes, It's a coaching call.
• 0:35
  And I'm like, Why would I get on a coaching call?
• 0:38
  I'm I'm a I'm a lowly pastor, you know.
• 0:40
  What would I get on a coaching call for?
• 0:43
  And so I'm like, sure, you know, I'll get on there, see what's going on.
• 0:46
  And and Lyle, instantly, instantly, I knew.
• 0:51
  This is where I was to be.
• 0:52
  The Holy Spirit just said, This is the direction you're supposed to go.
• 0:56
  You know, you was Isaiah says you'll hear a word a voice behind you saying, Go to the left, go to the right.

  Well I knew this one's a go toward the coaching.
• 1:04
  And so uh, you know, I just stayed on that call and invested in that and I'm like, Man, this is this was more I had more encouragement on that call than I've had when I've gone

  to pastors gatherings, you know, which sounds really funny, but
• 1:20
  Uh it it's it's just true, you know.
• 1:22
  And so I'm I'm on this call and then I'm I'm cruising through it for a couple months and then Nate, you know, talks to me about uh CCA Live.

  And he's got a ticket.
• 1:34
  He goes, Do you want it?
• 1:35
  I'll you know, and I'm like, Yeah, I'll go.
• 1:37
  So I go and there again, God just nailed it and said, This is where you belong.
• 1:43
  And the funny thing about that, you know, Stephen Pressfield says in his book, The Art of War the War of Art.

  Resistance tells us what we have to do.
• 1:53
  And I was three blocks from the hotel and I was watching where I was going.
• 1:58
  I blew a red light, got T-boned by a big white truck.
• 2:01
  Every time I see a big white pickup truck near me, I'm like, okay, not them, not them.
• 2:07
  And uh just everything everything that week, it's it's a longer story than you have for your your podcast, but uh everything that week, the Lord just kept saying, This is where I
• 2:19
  want you to.
• 2:19
  To go, move go in this direction.
• 2:22
  And so ever since then I've just been pursuing it and learning sales and learning business, you know.
• 2:28
  I mean, it sounds funny to say I'm learning business because people don't think a church is a business, but it absolutely is a business.
• 2:33
  You know what I'm talking about.
• 2:34
  It's just not a for profit business, you know.
• 2:37
  So uh it's just a different entity.
• 2:39
  So but I'm learning the other side of it and and you know, from
• 2:43
  I don't want say more secular side, but just that for that profit, for profit side.
• 2:48
  And so it it's been quite a journey and and figuring out what coaching looks like for me.
• 2:55
  And uh I'm I'm just kind of having a ball as I go here and just seeing what's what's next and what God has for me.

  And so yeah, that's kind of how I got on my coaching journey.
• 3:04
  Didn't realize I'd probably been God's been getting me ready with 35 years of ministry to coach.
• 3:10
  And I was part of a parachurch organization and and learned some coaching skills then.
• 3:15
  I just didn't realize they were coaching skills.
• 3:18
  And so here I am still learning, growing and figuring things out and seeing where where I'm going with this whole thing.
• 3:25
  So it's it's quite a quite a trip, quite a trip.
• 3:28
  It is.
• 3:28
  And it's funny you say that church is a business because people don't realize it is a business.
• 3:33
  Um, and you're trying to impact people instead of saying, I'm gonna pay you more or pay you less, you have volunteers that you have to impact.
• 3:39
  So it's a total different leadership structure.
• 3:41
  And then when you go into business for yourself, you have this pre-designed church organization.
• 3:46
  Now you do your own business and now you start as a solopreneur.
• 3:49
  So you've got to develop these individual skills that were pretty much in place when you join a church.
• 3:54
  So tell us, what are some of those skills that you had to really kind of pick up?
• 3:59
  one one of the thing it's funny, I was sitting with you know Justin Janelski one day and and I said to him, What does scale mean?
• 4:06
  It's it's a whole different verbiage and terminology.
• 4:14
  And and I kinda said up I said p c I feel kinda stupid here asking you this, but he's like, No, it's not stupid at all.
• 4:19
  He goes, I can see but then I'm thinking, well I scale.
• 4:22
  I've been trying to scale my church the whole time, but we don't call it that.
• 4:26
  You know, we we just call it growth or whatever.
• 4:29
  So some of it is the verbiage, some of it is
• 4:35
  here's the fun one for me.
• 4:37
  Learning the tax benefits of being in business.
• 4:41
  You know, that's a business expense.
• 4:43
  I can take that off.
• 4:44
  So last year was really a fun time for me when my my accountant said, Yeah, he goes, uh, you you get a little refund and I'm putting it toward your quarterly payments and stuff.

  I'm like, whoa, that's kind of fun.
• 4:55
  Not to owe anything for one year.
• 4:57
  So that was my big, my big thing, you know, was that one like, yeah, that's really cool.

  Um, just being in a in a different environment.
• 5:05
  Um, you know, sometimes in the church world there is such competition to to uh outdo each other and whatnot and y right, to perform.
• 5:18
  And one of the things that I have just really appreciated uh about the community you and I are a part of,

  Is is the way people are just for you.
• 5:29
  They want you to succeed.
• 5:30
  They want you to uh to grow, to learn.
• 5:34
  They're so willing to say, Hey, here's a here's a nugget for you.
• 5:37
  Uh similar to what you're doing right now, you know, and you and I've had talks, and I mean it's just it's just good stuff.
• 5:43
  And so learning some of those things, a little bit of a mind, you know, mindset shift, which is fun.
• 5:49
  when I'm pastoring still and then I'm coaching still, you know, or trying to get that going and how does how do I do that?
• 5:55
  And that's an interesting little dance uh that I'm learning.
• 5:59
  Uh but uh it's exciting to learn.
• 6:02
  I like new stuff, you know, new challenges.
• 6:05
  So I'm I'm certainly getting new challenges, that's for sure.
• 6:08
  So and and learning to not be afraid of
• 6:12
  that it it's it's you know i you know it was it's kinda like when someone comes to a church, they're a new believer.
• 6:19
  They don't have all the answers.
• 6:20
  They're learning.
• 6:20
  They're growing.
• 6:21
  This is almost like being a a new believer in one sense.
• 6:24
  Now I'm having I'm I'm having to learn some new skill sets and and that sort of thing.
• 6:28
  So uh and that's fun for me to learn that and to just drink in all the knowledge and wisdom that so many people have and are willing to just
• 6:38
  uh invest you know in in me.
• 6:40
  So it that's good stuff.
• 6:41
  And hopefully I'm, you know, contributing them in some way as well.
• 6:44
  So yeah.
• 6:46
  you said that and it reminds me of somebody who told me one time, we don't make fun of a baby when a baby falls, but we're afraid to fall.

  And we're taking those first steps.
• 6:55
  We've got to realize, you know, it's just part of the process.
• 6:57
  If you don't fall, you're never gonna grow.
• 6:59
  So fall as many times you need to, because the more times you fall, the closer you get to success.

  It's that simple.

  I was just I just watching a documentary.

  It was funny, it was
• 7:09
  I was on Tubi the other night, and I normally I just you know, we don't have cable or discs, so I'm on we watch YouTube.

  And I thought, I haven't been on Tubi.
• 7:17
  I'll see if they put any good movies on or whatever.
• 7:20
  And there was I I'm a I'm a documentary geek, you know, I love watching that stuff.
• 7:26
  And uh I'm YouTube certified in a lot of things, trust me.
• 7:29
  I I can't do but I'm certified in And uh there was a Zig Ziggler documentary on and and I just that's hot kinda interesting.

  And I I watched the whole thing.
• 7:39
  And I was so inspired.
• 7:41
  And then my wife and I watched it again last night because she's starting to dip her toe in the waters of coaching.
• 7:48
  And i it it was just so inspiring to me and like yeah, that you know, just keep going and and they had s numerous people on this documentary that they two foreclosures and all this

  stuff.
• 8:01
  I'm like, okay, well I haven't had that stuff going on, so maybe I can actually do this thing, you know, if they can't, I can.
• 8:07
  So yeah, the to you know, it's okay to fall, just make sure you learn something when you're you know, you do.

  So yeah, it's good stuff, yeah, yeah, good stuff.

  God doing right now in your business?
• 8:18
  Right now my business uh it it's it's interesting because there was a uh this might tie into another another thing you want to talk about is what's what's scripture, what's God
• 8:29
  telling me?
• 8:29
  He's telling me, I just preached on this yesterday, so uh is when the Israelites were getting ready to cross the Red Sea.
• 8:39
  And you know, as I said, you know, they were between the devil and the deep blue sea.
• 8:43
  They had the Red Sea in front of them, or the Red Sea, I should say.
• 8:46
  Anyway, the um they had the the Egyptian army behind them, and they had nowhere to go.
• 8:52
  And the scripture, you know, they're they're whining to Moses as they often do and did, I should say.
• 8:58
  And um he says, you know, hey, just stand still and you'll see the deliverance of the Lord.
• 9:04
  You these Egyptians you see today, they're gonna be gone.
• 9:06
  God's gonna take care of it, don't worry about it.
• 9:08
  And
• 9:09
  And I did a little work on the Hebrew, and the Hebrew stand still means be ready.
• 9:16
  You know, and and and I I'm gonna give you a little mini sermon here.
• 9:20
  You I I talked to this congregation, I said, too many times the church, we're sitting, we're standing still.
• 9:27
  And we like that.
• 9:28
  We don't want to move.
• 9:28
  Yeah, this is good.
• 9:29
  We that's not what it means.
• 9:31
  It it's like a soldier, you know, you know, be you ready, you know, be you steady, be you ready.
• 9:37
  Be ready for action because God's going to do something.
• 9:39
  He's going to tell you at some point, move forward and to walk through something probably pretty challenging.
• 9:44
  Like, we're going to walk through the Red Sea.
• 9:47
  How's this going to work, Lord?
• 9:48
  And and that's that's what I feel like He's telling me right now.
• 9:52
  Be ready, because it's coming.
• 9:54
  And I may not see it right now, but
• 9:59
  He's getting me ready and I'm I you know and he's telling me to be ready, you know, have the have the stand at attention and wait for marching orders.

  And so that's that's where I'm at.

  It's a hard place to be for me because I'm like, I just Lord, I want to know the plan.

  Tell me the whole plan is now the plan is you be ready right now, I'll tell you the next thing is you need to know.

  So yeah, that that's kind of where I'm at with it is Lord, what are we doing next, you know?

  So

  That's funny.

  We just studied in our church.
• 10:26
  I I teach at my church as well.
• 10:27
  And we talked about Gideon, the call of Gideon.
• 10:31
  And a lot of people were just hunkered down, not doing anything.
• 10:33
  He was hiding, but he was still doing something.
• 10:36
  And when God called him, he didn't call them out based on who he is.
• 10:40
  He called them up based on who he's going to be.
• 10:42
  So he said man of valor or warrior.
• 10:46
  And so he called them by the identity of who he's walking into, which I thought was really a cool experience.

  yeah, yeah, that's good stuff.
• 10:53
  That's good stuff.

  Yep.

  Good stuff.

  So it's like kinda we're gonna switch into our gear of business growth.

  What business growth tips do you have for our group today?
• 11:02
  You know, Justin, he's our our c our coaching coach, is what I call it.
• 11:07
  Uh he just had on his his podcast, I think it was, is um, you know, putting God first, it sounds so simple, but uh y putting him at the center, you know, God and even watching this
• 11:22
  this documentary on Zig Ziggler last night, you know, when he came to Christ at what forty-five or whatever, it it changed everything.
• 11:30
  It changed everything.
• 11:32
  And you know, not knowing everything I think I need to know about the business side, I know he does.
• 11:41
  And he's sending me people that's that are saying, hey, here's something you need to think about and do.
• 11:46
  So you know, i it I I have I have three degrees and I you know I've said it many times.
• 11:52
  I know how to do a funeral, I know how to do a wedding, I know how to put a sermon together, but that doesn't mean I don't need the Lord.

  You know, I still, you know, I I can do all those things.

  You can too, Lyle.

  You can teach.
• 12:05
  I I preach yesterday.
• 12:07
  But we I don't think either one of us want to do it without the power of the of the Lord and his guidance through the whole thing.

  'Cause he he does know what he's doing.

  He does do it well.
• 12:17
  I think one of the other things is to remain teachable and humble.
• 12:21
  It was it was one of those things I was on a uh in a training and and um
• 12:28
  the the the question was asked, well how do you do your your pre-frame and all this?
• 12:32
  I had to think figure out what that meant too, by the way.
• 12:35
  And found out what it meant, but it was funny because my mind says I gotta do it my way.
• 12:43
  And I'm I was sitting there and I thought to myself, No, I don't.
• 12:48
  This is a really good way to do it.
• 12:51
  Follow the script for crying out loud and why do I need to change the verbiage to make it mine?
• 12:57
  This isn't about uniqueness or anything.
• 12:59
  It's about what will help that person and and getting more and more to the other focus.

  It's so easy to say, wait a minute here, I need to get my business going because I need to make a living and all this stuff.

  Wait a minute.
• 13:11
  Focus on the other person.
• 13:14
  You know that you know the line, win-win or no deal.
• 13:16
  You know, I want what I do to be good for someone else that I want it to be good for me.
• 13:20
  When that happens.
• 13:22
  then we can really see some really powerful things happen.
• 13:25
  So I'm I'm making sure I stay in line, you know, as as Johnny Juan Ortiz says, be in alignment with the assignment, you know.

  So just Lord, am I, you know, am I where you want me to be?
• 13:38
  Am I what I'm doing?
• 13:39
  I can get impatient.
• 13:41
  Uh but you know what was the Paul said to keep in step with the spirit, walk in the spirit and and live by the spirit.

  So uh you run too fast, you can fall and hurt yourself.
• 13:50
  You you know, I don't want God dragging me along either.
• 13:52
  I want to I wanna be where He wants me to be and and okay, He knows what's going on, He'll get me where I need to be.

  So yeah, though I think that's where that's where I'm at.

  Those are the big things that God's teaching me and showing me this just do this.

  I got it.

  He knows what He's doing.

  So

  talked a little before this call that you were talking about the people around you makes a big impact on how you do that, that encouragement.

  So can you speak into like if if somebody's struggling finding those people who help level them up, how would you go about guiding them to help find the right people to surround

  themselves with?
• 14:25
  Yeah, yeah, that's cool.
• 14:26
  Well, you know, for myself, I'm very I'm very fortunate and blessed to have people around me who who do cheer me on.
• 14:34
  I also know the ones who won't.
• 14:39
  and you know, it's very hard as a pastor, it's like, God, I really, you know, do I have to be with them?
• 14:43
  Because, you know, they can pull me down because, well, maybe you're supposed to pull them up, you know, but if you c if for myself, uh
• 14:53
  it's a it's a God thing for me that I you know, Nate Bailey put me in this group, put me in with the Lyle Leeds that I can I can have to cheer me on.

  You and I've been in on calls together and stuff.
• 15:04
  And to just have those people that um, you know, when you can look for that, but also it's it you know, behind me is a bunch of books.

  And some of I've never met the people, most of I haven't.
• 15:17
  But some of those books, what they say in there, are are those things are re speaking into me.

  I I heard Dennis Kinlaw say one time to a bunch of pastors, he goes, You don't have time to read all books.

  You only read the good ones.
• 15:31
  He goes, If you're four chapters in and it's not doing anything for you, put it aside, go get a book that will.

  So I'm I'm even learning with that to uh
• 15:40
  What am I listening to?
• 15:42
  Because I can hand you know someone's gonna listen to this podcast.

  They don't know me.
• 15:46
  That maybe they know who you are, maybe they've never met you.
• 15:49
  But maybe today you and I are gonna be that voice that says, Hey, you can do this.

  You can do it.
• 15:54
  Why not you?

  You know, why not you?
• 15:57
  So yeah, finding those people, I think some ways it's a process of elimination.

  it sounds really funny, but you know moving, you know, not spending as much time with some of the people that pull you down.

  But I've also said, God, one of the prayers I pray for my business every day is, God, give me the right people.

  And that's not just the right clients.
• 16:18
  That's the right people I need in my life to that will s you know s spur me on to good works, you know, and to what the good work that God has for me.

  So

  Yeah, and and and I you know, you and I I think it probably point some people in some directions on some things, but yeah.

  Yeah, that's the God'll send to you if you ask for 'em, you know, for sure.

  So yeah.

  that's a great reminder.

  I don't think I've ever prayed for God to put people in my life to make my life easier, so to speak, or to encourage me.

  You know, sometimes we forget the simple things of prayer.
• 16:51
  We we prayers are last minute when it should be our first thought in the process of doing it.

  If you're gonna grow your business, you should pray.
• 16:58
  God help grow my business.
• 16:59
  God put those people in place.

  God, tell me what calling I have on my life and show me the path I need to take.

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.

  For sure.

  Yeah.

  It's funny how we can compartmentalize our lives.

  well, I got my hour of church in this week.
• 17:14
  So now God I'll call you when I need you.

  You know, I I as I talk about, you know, the Holy Spirit is is not elf on a shelf.

  You know, let him be part of your life and he'll guide you and uh put you where you need to be and with whom you need to be.

  So yeah, that's that's something I'm I have to remind myself all the time, you know.

  If he's not going before you, you're kind of walking too fast, I think.

  Yeah, yeah, really.

  Yeah, exactly, exactly.

  Where you at, Lord?

  Well mar here, but you're too far ahead of me to see where I'm at, so yeah.

  That's funny.

  It's not that God slows down.
• 17:44
  It's sometimes we get ahead of God because we have our own ideas and our own plans and we haven't submitted those to God and s and allowed ourselves humbly to listen to Him for

  those guidances.

  This podcast is an example of that, you know.

  I wanted to do it two or three years ago.
• 17:59
  But God said, just wait, just wait.

  And I did, gritted my teeth, but I did.
• 18:04
  Um, but God's blessed it and just I've just seen these stories that I wouldn't have had these stories.

  A year ago.
• 18:10
  It's just been a blessing to see what God's doing.
• 18:12
  Yeah.
• 18:12
  Well, you know, it's kind of funny.
• 18:13
  I was I was um a month ago, as you and I were talking about, I was supposed to do this podcast with you and found myself flat on my back in the hospital.
• 18:23
  And you know, I texted you, I'm not gonna be able to do this.
• 18:26
  Uh and I said, Well reschedule.
• 18:29
  And I don't remember rescheduling.
• 18:32
  And and I looked at my calendar for what was going on this week and I thought, Well, what is that?
• 18:37
  And I I've I've messaged you twice.
• 18:38
  Hey, I need the link to get on your podcast.
• 18:40
  And I'm like, Well, when did that happen?
• 18:43
  And I don't know whether you did it or I did it.
• 18:45
  I just forgot, you know, the anesthesia is still kicking there.
• 18:48
  But I'm like, All right, we're doing this Monday.

  So I'm here we are.

  Praise the Lord.

  So that's a good thing.

  So his timing, not ours, Lyle.

  bit of tidbit of wisdom you want to leave us with and how can someone get in touch with you?

  you know, uh I I I'm I often tell people I'm the chairman of the Department of Redundancy Department, but you know, be ready.

  That boy, the Lord has just drilled that into me.

  Mark, be ready.

  'Cause when he when he says it's time to move, I want to be ready to move.

  When the pillar moves, when when the sea opens up, I you know, I wanna go at it.

  The Lord speaks to me through movie lines in movies and there's one in Secretariat where, you know
• 19:33
  Penny Tweety, the owner of Secretariat, she says, you know, you you run at life and no matter you know, you don't sit there and wait, you run at it.

  I'm like, Okay, be ready.
• 19:41
  When he's when the sea opens, I wanna be the first one charging through there.
• 19:46
  And so you know, I wanna w my my coaching, I help uh, you know, Christian men who are of shut down show up so they can stand fast.

  And uh I named my my coaching business Standfast Coaching because that is the Grant, Clan Grant motto.

  My mother's maiden name was Grant.
• 20:06
  She came it's a Scotland, you know, Scottish name, and so their motto is Stand Fast.
• 20:11
  So I kind of borrowed it from there.
• 20:12
  It means to show true grit.
• 20:14
  And I want to help guys who are not showing true grit, show true grit, deal with their shame wounds.
• 20:19
  They're toxic shame wounds.
• 20:20
  That's where my background is.
• 20:23
