- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's sen out to the Ramos Law hotline. Car accident
- 0:02Speaker 1: you need Ramos Law medical doctor and attorney ramas Law
- 0:04Speaker 1: dot com. Jeff legwelldovespn dot com joins us as he
- 0:08Speaker 1: does every Thursday. First of all, Hello Legi, how are
- 0:10Speaker 1: you doing this morning?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Good morning fellas.
- 0:14Speaker 1: So we haven't talked to you since the first preseason game.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Just curious. Am I allowed to have the takeaway of
- 0:21Speaker 1: the tempo and rhythm of the offense under Davis web
- 0:26Speaker 1: look pretty good in that first game? Am I allowed
- 0:28Speaker 1: to say that? Or or should I say? This is
- 0:30Speaker 1: preseason and it doesn't matter.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Well, you live in freedom, so you can say whatever
- 0:36Speaker 3: you Wantwald say.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Now, I think they've made it a point.
- 0:42Speaker 3: I mean, even even practice as there's been a concerted
- 0:46Speaker 3: effort to keep the tempo at a certain level and
- 0:49Speaker 3: not let it get bogged down, you know, other than
- 0:53Speaker 3: the usual instructional you know pauses they have sometimes, but
- 0:59Speaker 3: they they've really to get the the operation and the
- 1:03Speaker 3: mechanics of play from Davis Webb to bow Nicks. Bonnicks
- 1:07Speaker 3: in the huddle, bon Nicks out of the huddle. You
- 1:10Speaker 3: know when they huddle, you know when they go the
- 1:12Speaker 3: two minute situation all that, that's different. But when they've huddled,
- 1:15Speaker 3: they've they've made that a big deal. And you know,
- 1:20Speaker 3: I've seen the difference now, you know, I think the
- 1:22Speaker 3: Cardinals aren't very good, or I mean the Falcons rather
- 1:25Speaker 3: aren't very good. And so some of that is one
- 1:30Speaker 3: team was a lot more you know, had the ducks
- 1:34Speaker 3: in a row, as it were, than the other one
- 1:36Speaker 3: did so, but it's evident and it's been a big deal.
- 1:40Speaker 3: The real test is gonna come when you know it's
- 1:44Speaker 3: not so vanilla and and the defense is moving around
- 1:48Speaker 3: pre snap and all of those things.
- 1:51Speaker 4: So Bo's gonna go Friday night, fourteenth place. According to
- 1:54Speaker 4: coach Payton, did you think they're gonna.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Play all three? They're gonna play all three victory three quarterbacks.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Do you think it's the only game both plays?
- 2:02Speaker 3: I think a lot depends on how it looks, how
- 2:04Speaker 3: he feels, you know, if it goes well, I could
- 2:07Speaker 3: see them using that last game to make a decision
- 2:11Speaker 3: on the number two quarterback type thing. You know, I
- 2:14Speaker 3: could see it going there. If he looks really good
- 2:17Speaker 3: and it's smooth and the operation is is great, I
- 2:21Speaker 3: think they feel like, you know, he has missed no
- 2:24Speaker 3: snaps in training camp that he that he would have
- 2:28Speaker 3: taken like last.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Year for example.
- 2:31Speaker 3: So he's gotten in a lot of work since camp started,
- 2:35Speaker 3: you know, including the walkthroughs and all of the other things.
- 2:37Speaker 3: So I think they would be inclined to to sit
- 2:41Speaker 3: him in that last games as they did last year.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Did he look good, sorry, emotion, did he look good
- 2:47Speaker 4: last week? What would Ellinger have to do to overtake him?
- 2:50Speaker 5: That's what that was my question too. It's a great job,
- 2:52Speaker 5: well you asked, emotion, So what does Ellinger have to
- 2:55Speaker 5: do to actually win the backup job?
- 2:58Speaker 1: And just a b on that, what does Ellinger have
- 3:01Speaker 1: to do to outdo Jared Stidham?
- 3:03Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:04Speaker 4: In in better words, is Ellinger the number two guy?
- 3:08Speaker 4: And we're just waiting for that moved tap?
- 3:10Speaker 3: Well, I would say, you know, look, they would They
- 3:14Speaker 3: might argue with you in public or behind the scene,
- 3:16Speaker 3: but I would say Ellinger has won the daily battle.
- 3:21Speaker 3: You know, Stillham look good in the game last week,
- 3:23Speaker 3: and the games matter for sure, but day to day practice,
- 3:28Speaker 3: to practice snap to snap, I think Ellinger has won
- 3:32Speaker 3: that battle over the last few weeks. So I think
- 3:36Speaker 3: there's a lot more of that information the team has,
- 3:41Speaker 3: and it's you know, I can see him keeping three.
- 3:45Speaker 3: It's it's how he's done business in the past. They
- 3:49Speaker 3: only kept to last year because they needed that roster
- 3:52Speaker 3: spot elsewhere. But to do that, they convinced Ellinger to
- 3:57Speaker 3: stay on the practice squad when he had a chance
- 4:00Speaker 3: to go to a fifty three. You know, if you
- 4:04Speaker 3: convinced him of that twice last season and then you
- 4:08Speaker 3: want to cut him this year, I'm not sure you're
- 4:11Speaker 3: convincing him a third time to come back.
- 4:15Speaker 2: If he has a chance at an active roster. Well.
- 4:18Speaker 5: Color me surprised, Jeff, because I didn't know this, but
- 4:21Speaker 5: you reported on it in your story. The NFL now
- 4:26Speaker 5: they'll go to New York and if one guy throws
- 4:28Speaker 5: a punch first, but he's not the one that was flagged,
- 4:30Speaker 5: they can't go back and say, oh, number seventy four,
- 4:33Speaker 5: that guy's the one that threw the first punching he
- 4:35Speaker 5: can get ding two. I didn't know that that system
- 4:38Speaker 5: was in place this year. First year, I didn't even know.
- 4:42Speaker 3: That when the officials visited training camps. It was one
- 4:46Speaker 3: of the things they've covered with teams is just reminding
- 4:50Speaker 3: people that's now in place, and after the pushing and
- 4:54Speaker 3: shoving and all the stuff that went on Tuesday, Sean
- 4:58Speaker 3: Payton used the team meeting to remind is the players
- 5:02Speaker 3: that that.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Does exist and.
- 5:05Speaker 3: People should know his his distaste for practice fighting probably
- 5:11Speaker 3: can't be measured with human technology.
- 5:16Speaker 2: That his dislike for it is so deep. So while
- 5:21Speaker 2: you know.
- 5:21Speaker 3: All of us kind of made it a big deal,
- 5:24Speaker 3: he ain't happy when that stuff happens.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Well, his head would have fallen off after seeing what
- 5:29Speaker 5: happened with his old team and the Cowboys this week,
- 5:32Speaker 5: So we probably would have lost his bacon. But that's
- 5:34Speaker 5: I mean, you know, you don't have things like that
- 5:36Speaker 5: in the NFL anymore, But I mean, you're throwing out
- 5:39Speaker 5: seven guys per side. It's crazy.
- 5:43Speaker 3: It's why most frankly, it's why some coaches really don't
- 5:46Speaker 3: like joint practices. I think Sean has a very limited
- 5:52Speaker 3: roster of other head coaches he's willing to do joint
- 5:56Speaker 3: practices with because of that, he knows if he's sticks
- 6:00Speaker 3: to the group he he has done him with in
- 6:03Speaker 3: the past, that they can limit that sort of thing
- 6:06Speaker 3: before it even before they even take the field. And
- 6:09Speaker 3: I remember the way back when the cowboys came here
- 6:14Speaker 3: for joint practices.
- 6:15Speaker 2: That was a fight festival, and yeah.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Mike Shanahan was not real pumped about how that all
- 6:22Speaker 3: went that day that weekend.
- 6:24Speaker 1: As Jeff Leewell ESPN dot Com all conversations with Leggy,
- 6:27Speaker 1: you brought you about the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 6:29Speaker 1: IBW Local sixty eight start with the job and with
- 6:32Speaker 1: the career my camp darling from the very start to now,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and I'm even more encouraged by it. It has been
- 6:39Speaker 1: Jonah Coleman.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And you're really out on a limb there, aren't you.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Well, here's the thing I'm telling you that he stuck
- 6:46Speaker 1: it to you. One of the things about it is
- 6:48Speaker 1: I just wanted some JK. Dobbins insurance. And that wasn't RJ. Harvey,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and it wasn't Julia mcloffin. It had to come from
- 6:54Speaker 1: somewhere else. And so for Jonah Coleman, you know, when
- 6:57Speaker 1: Davis Webb says, we saw that one run and we
- 6:59Speaker 1: were good. I mean, I think that tells you even
- 7:02Speaker 1: more that like they're very very comfortable with where he's at,
- 7:06Speaker 1: even as a rookie, right, and.
- 7:08Speaker 2: They should be.
- 7:09Speaker 3: You know, actually, you know, I know, I think we
- 7:12Speaker 3: talked on your show, Your Guys Show in April this
- 7:16Speaker 3: guy had the chance to really be the rookie that
- 7:19Speaker 3: could have some impact because I mean I watched hundreds
- 7:24Speaker 3: of his snaps in college before the draft, and this
- 7:28Speaker 3: is just an NFL back. I mean that's just how
- 7:31Speaker 3: an NFL back looks coming.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Into the league.
- 7:34Speaker 3: And you know, the Broncos said it the draft weekend
- 7:39Speaker 3: their comp for Jonah Coleman was JK.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Dobbins.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Well, when they looked at the board, and I have
- 7:47Speaker 3: been told that after he made the run with the
- 7:50Speaker 3: little spin move at the end of it and ran
- 7:53Speaker 3: through the tackle and looked explosive and decisive to I
- 7:57Speaker 3: mean everything, it is just one little run in it,
- 8:00Speaker 3: you know, in the big scheme of things, but like
- 8:03Speaker 3: if you had a running back checklist, how should a
- 8:06Speaker 3: run look?
- 8:08Speaker 2: He hit them all, even the little football things in there.
- 8:12Speaker 3: And I was told after that run the uh A
- 8:15Speaker 3: very declarative get him out of there was set on
- 8:18Speaker 3: the headset after that run.
- 8:20Speaker 5: The falling forward at the end was my favorite. I
- 8:22Speaker 5: mean one of my favorite parts. Are they are they comfortable?
- 8:25Speaker 1: Though? You know what Sean Payton loves and what he
- 8:27Speaker 1: needs out of his running backs. You aren't gonna playun
- 8:29Speaker 1: that you can pass protect. Where's he in that department?
- 8:32Speaker 3: He might be the best of the group, you know,
- 8:35Speaker 3: but he hasn't had a real chance to do it
- 8:37Speaker 3: yet in a in a game game situation. But his
- 8:41Speaker 3: college tape is littered with big time moments there.
- 8:47Speaker 2: You know.
- 8:47Speaker 3: NFL is a little different, you know, And just like
- 8:50Speaker 3: the opener for example, you know, few defensive coordinators give
- 8:54Speaker 3: you more looks than than Spagnolo does. So, I mean,
- 8:59Speaker 3: you know, his ability to participate in that it's gonna
- 9:03Speaker 3: be tested early.
- 9:04Speaker 2: But he's more than willing.
- 9:06Speaker 3: He's physical, he's tough, he's strong. He doesn't just get
- 9:09Speaker 3: in the way. He's making impact. He's moving people when
- 9:12Speaker 3: he does it.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Cuts don't take place for a couple of weeks, Jeff.
- 9:16Speaker 3: But every yeah, that thirtieth Sunday a Sunday this year, and.
- 9:22Speaker 4: They all take place at the same time, which there's
- 9:24Speaker 4: gonna be a flood of players on the on the market.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Usually teams there's gonna be a player or.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Two that we assume makes the roster, and a team decides.
- 9:34Speaker 4: No, they're gonna go in another direction. Do you have
- 9:37Speaker 4: a handle of maybe a couple of guys on this
- 9:39Speaker 4: team that may fall prey to that.
- 9:42Speaker 3: They're gonna have a hard time this year, Vick. They're
- 9:44Speaker 3: gonna be cutting guys that are good enough for other people.
- 9:48Speaker 3: You know, So if they think they're gonna get they,
- 9:52Speaker 3: in their perfect world, every single player on their practice
- 9:56Speaker 3: squad would have already been here. They like bring back
- 10:00Speaker 3: people who've been in their program, who know their playbooks,
- 10:03Speaker 3: who know how they practice all of those things. So
- 10:08Speaker 3: in their perfect world, they make their cuts get to
- 10:12Speaker 3: fifty three and everybody they bring back on the practice
- 10:15Speaker 3: squad is one of their own guys. But now they
- 10:20Speaker 3: would stray from that if they saw somebody out there
- 10:23Speaker 3: they had graded way above. But anyway, but I don't
- 10:27Speaker 3: know that they could be able to do that this
- 10:28Speaker 3: year because some of the people they get rid of.
- 10:31Speaker 3: And it's really tight in the offensive line. I mean,
- 10:36Speaker 3: can can Alex forsythe makee it? You know he's been here.
- 10:40Speaker 3: You know, wide receiver going to be tight. The top
- 10:43Speaker 3: five have pretty been set since the start of camp. Really,
- 10:48Speaker 3: you know, they they'd love to have the rookie back, Cameron,
- 10:52Speaker 3: but you know you're gonna be able to do that,
- 10:56Speaker 3: you know, but those positions are tight. Secondary, they're going
- 10:59Speaker 3: to leave it defensive back, particularly a safety somewhere on
- 11:04Speaker 3: waivers that is good enough for other teams that they'd
- 11:08Speaker 3: like to have back.
- 11:09Speaker 2: You know, the rookie Miles.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Scott has had a quiet, really good camp, but there's
- 11:14Speaker 3: no room for him to make it at safety. But
- 11:19Speaker 3: you know that's their issue this year is they're they're
- 11:22Speaker 3: really tight. They're gonna have guys they think are good
- 11:25Speaker 3: enough for their fifty three who aren't going to have
- 11:28Speaker 3: a spot.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Well, Mike, my camp darling is Murdoch. It's my guy,
- 11:33Speaker 5: And I just wonder the whole linebacking corps how much
- 11:38Speaker 5: I know the different positions, but how much trouble is
- 11:40Speaker 5: Drew Sanders in if any.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Well, I mean that's that's uh, you know this year
- 11:45Speaker 3: has been I've been told it's a little different this
- 11:48Speaker 3: year too.
- 11:48Speaker 2: In the past. Uh, if you wanted to keep a guy.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Who may have been dinged up and your your plan
- 11:57Speaker 3: was to move him to IR right after cut down,
- 12:01Speaker 3: originally you had to keep him on the fifty three
- 12:04Speaker 3: and then the next day move him to IR. But
- 12:07Speaker 3: I think now you can designate two guys when you
- 12:12Speaker 3: cut to fifty three, that can go to ir at
- 12:16Speaker 3: that moment, but you have to designate him right then.
- 12:19Speaker 3: I think he has potential for that right now, depending
- 12:22Speaker 3: on how severe this this injury is, which they don't
- 12:26Speaker 3: they don't want to talk about. Nobody wants to talk
- 12:28Speaker 3: about what it is. So, but he didn't practice this week,
- 12:34Speaker 3: you know, when we were out there after playing in
- 12:37Speaker 3: the game, a few snaps. So, but he's he's sort
- 12:41Speaker 3: of a candidate for that, you know, as would you
- 12:44Speaker 3: know Alex forsythe be you know, a candidate for that.
- 12:48Speaker 3: But you can only designate two, so that doesn't really
- 12:50Speaker 3: save you a lot of guys as you make the moves.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Mojo, there are any other questions you'd like me to
- 12:57Speaker 4: ask so you can reask?
- 13:00Speaker 5: Yeah, uh, Jeff Vick, Yeah, do you feel the beat
- 13:05Speaker 5: in the rhythm of the night and dance until the
- 13:08Speaker 5: morning light?
- 13:10Speaker 4: I'm not gonna ask that. I'll let you go ahead
- 13:12Speaker 4: and have that one.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Yeah, No, that's uh.
- 13:15Speaker 3: I like it when you just dial back to the
- 13:18Speaker 3: eighties and just prove to everyone how old you are
- 13:21Speaker 3: on the show.
- 13:22Speaker 2: It's just is that the.
- 13:23Speaker 5: Barge, It's the barge. Yet you can't tell me that
- 13:28Speaker 5: you didn't get down to that in the eighties, Young
- 13:30Speaker 5: Jeff Legwalt cutting a rug, scamming chicks.
- 13:33Speaker 2: I know, I know you scaming chicks.
- 13:37Speaker 1: That uh, Jeff, final question for you, and it's a
- 13:41Speaker 1: it's a useless question because I know there's no room
- 13:43Speaker 1: on this roster for him.
- 13:45Speaker 5: But Joseph Man Jack my favorite name, Audios.
- 13:51Speaker 2: No receiver is I mean, they're they're tight at receiver.
- 13:55Speaker 3: It's you know, the five, the top five were the
- 13:58Speaker 3: top five day one of camp and they're the top
- 14:01Speaker 3: five now. So most years they keep five receivers. So
- 14:06Speaker 3: it's been a hard camp for if you're one of
- 14:09Speaker 3: the other receivers because you could play great and still
- 14:13Speaker 3: you know, be looking at and outside looking in when
- 14:16Speaker 3: you're done. But the undrafted rookie, I'm telling you Cameron Ross. Yeah,
- 14:21Speaker 3: I had a draftable grade on him. Now I'm not
- 14:24Speaker 3: going to say it like it was day two or something.
- 14:26Speaker 3: I'm a savant, but I did have a late draftable
- 14:31Speaker 3: grade on him. But he's he's better than my stinking
- 14:35Speaker 3: grade was.
- 14:35Speaker 5: Where's that from.
- 14:38Speaker 2: The undrafted?
- 14:39Speaker 3: Yeah, he's the undrafted receiver from Virginia they liked they
- 14:43Speaker 3: were actually scouting another guy when he popped up on
- 14:46Speaker 3: their tape. Uh so, but he's a returner too, And
- 14:51Speaker 3: I looked at his touchdown returns from college just after
- 14:54Speaker 3: camp started and uh yeah, that's a that's one nay.
- 15:00Speaker 3: They would love to sneak him through. If he does
- 15:02Speaker 3: not play much in the preseason finale.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Then you know that they are really open. Yeah, nobody
- 15:11Speaker 2: notices him.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Well, he's another guy who played a lot of college football, didn't.
- 15:14Speaker 3: He Yeah, now they like that's their profile. They like
- 15:18Speaker 3: the big resume guys you know, in their draft class.
- 15:23Speaker 3: But their draft class is impacting their fifty three because
- 15:27Speaker 3: I think if you got them to honestly answer in May,
- 15:32Speaker 3: will this many draft picks make a fourteen win team
- 15:36Speaker 3: that brought everybody back, their answer would have been no.
- 15:41Speaker 2: But they're sitting right now.
- 15:42Speaker 3: With at least four of a draft class that will
- 15:46Speaker 3: probably make this team, and they didn't have a first
- 15:49Speaker 3: or a second round pick. And I would say that's
- 15:53Speaker 3: how you draft in the NFL or if you're going
- 15:56Speaker 3: to be good.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So the four are on Yadam jonah C.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I think I think Red Murdoch makes it and cage
- 16:05Speaker 3: Casey would not make it through waivers.
- 16:07Speaker 2: I already had one GM tell me.
- 16:10Speaker 3: I asked two gms if cage Casey was on waivers
- 16:15Speaker 3: coming through, would you take him? I had one say
- 16:18Speaker 3: I'd have to look at it a long time and
- 16:20Speaker 3: the other one said, hell, yes.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I would take him.
- 16:22Speaker 1: All right, Well there's your answer.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Well, I know his alignment doesn't like move the needle
- 16:27Speaker 3: for a lot of people, but he's a four position lineman. Yeah,
- 16:33Speaker 3: so like three years from now, he's going to be
- 16:37Speaker 3: the guy who saves the Broncos two roster spots every
- 16:40Speaker 3: every August, every September.
- 16:42Speaker 1: And Jeff lakewell ESPN dot Com to this every Thursday.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Always appreciate it, Leggy, thank you.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Thanks bel
