- 0:01So I found an idea, a concept that I think we can all easily
- 0:09debate in our minds, and it can relate obviously to the Torah,
- 0:14built on the Torah ideas, and very much relate to the season
- 0:17that we're in when it comes to preparing for a Chanel.
- 0:21A little bit was mentioned in the rabbi's speech last night.
- 0:24So here's the thing, according to our tarah, are we busy with
- 0:31old things? As a Jew, are we into ancient
- 0:35items? Are we into history, or are we
- 0:38not? The simple answer, of course,
- 0:40is, is that everything's built on history.
- 0:43Everything's built on misura tradition.
- 0:47It's right itself. All our beliefs that whatever we
- 0:50have came from a certain time, we always go back to certain
- 0:54times. Whether we go back to the
- 0:55creation of the world, go back to the Itziamit sign, we go back
- 1:00to Matan Tara. We're always going back and
- 1:02drawing everything back from the beginning.
- 1:03Back from the beginning. Our anima means I believe.
- 1:07I believe that the Tara was given by us tonight.
- 1:10I believe in the creation of the world.
- 1:12Everything is there at the time, always joining us back.
- 1:16So you would think that the mindset of our Tara would be 1.
- 1:21It's very ancient and very much focused on comparing to the old.
- 1:27That's how you would stop the problem is here's the problem as
- 1:31follows. We have many indications and
- 1:34we're busy with the new. For example, we said the
- 1:35creation of the world and we say into to Fila as Shem renews the
- 1:41world every day recreates the world every day.
- 1:46We have another hinted on yesterday's Brian Shaw.
- 1:48We remember Sherman says the words Hayom on this day you've
- 1:53accepted the Torah. Hayom says she every day needs
- 1:56to be like it's brand new with there's a concept of new, of
- 2:01modern. So the question and challenge I
- 2:03want to figure out is this, Which one are we busy with?
- 2:07Are we busy with ancient, busy with history, busy with
- 2:11tradition, which means everything has to be like the
- 2:13past? Or are we focused on new,
- 2:17modern, developed, new ideas, things about the future?
- 2:23That's the question is an answer, which I'm sure we all
- 2:26have the kind of the answer. I'll give you the answer from
- 2:27the rabbi, but I first want to pose the question to think about
- 2:30it. Busy with the new or busy with
- 2:34the old, And we can use this in any area, whether it be Torah
- 2:37character, any area. It's Schwartz.
- 2:41That's the question. What's the simple answer?
- 2:43Old or no, Saying new but old, you have to learn from history.
- 2:48So how do you apply that exactly?
- 2:49You learn from our four father, right?
- 2:52The answer is both, correct. That's very much a vehicle,
- 2:59which is very much the old. That's the old angle.
- 3:03How do you explain the combination?
- 3:04And we'll explain it. We'll take the combination once
- 3:06we get it clear. And we used every area, let's
- 3:09say, let's say learning Torah. For example, someone told me
- 3:12recently he was learning a topic and he was delving into the
- 3:16topic very much, and he came up with an idea.
- 3:20He had one problem. His problem was the idea and
- 3:23this topic of Torah was a brand new idea it seemed, and he could
- 3:27not find anyone who said this idea.
- 3:31And he said until he really heard or read anyone saying the
- 3:35same idea unto it all, he felt very uncomfortable what he was
- 3:38saying. And he has a class and he said
- 3:40he had a hard time teaching his class this to our point because
- 3:45he felt that he made it up until he found a rabbi that's a
- 3:48reputable rabbi who said that idea.
- 3:51What's the concept? Here's how it works.
- 3:54It's based on the old. Everything is based on the old.
- 3:57Absolutely. We build our talent, entire
- 4:00foundation based on what's wearing in our Tara, based on
- 4:04what's ancient, based on our parents and grandparents did.
- 4:08But at the very same time, equally as a point is figuring
- 4:14out a new angle, applying it with a new perspective is a
- 4:18requirement. When you learn to A, a
- 4:21requirement you learn to a is. You have to be thinking and
- 4:23analyzing and getting it clear and developing hidu shetori to
- 4:28work on hidu shetori. What does the word hidu shetori
- 4:31mean? New Torah.
- 4:34How could a person have new Torah?
- 4:35It's almost. If you translate that the wrong
- 4:38way, it's borderline heresy. New Torah.
- 4:41Torah is old Torah is ancient. Torah is a foundation and it can
- 4:45never change. How do you have this idea?
- 4:48You're learning and you're going to come up with an idea and no
- 4:51one else ever wrote or no one else ever thought, and that's
- 4:55actually a good thing. Has it possible new Torah?
- 4:59The answer is the concept is very clear.
- 5:03Everything that we have is a foundation.
- 5:05We're supposed to take that and apply it in a new angle, in a
- 5:09new way to a new situation, to a new situation in life.
- 5:14We take what we have. We apply at different.
- 5:16Even though Torah learning, even the word that Hashem wrote are
- 5:20meant to be learnt and with your brain, your mind, your modern
- 5:25perspective, utilize a new way. So it's built on the old and
- 5:31applied to the new. 1000% correct.
- 5:35That's the way to go. You have foundation and you have
- 5:38an application. You have the ancient.
- 5:40You haven't miss what all you have with your parents and
- 5:43grandparents told you can't change from that and you have
- 5:47how you apply to this very day. Every single person, especially
- 5:52when it comes to to our learning has to think that way.
- 5:54When I'm about to learn, it's going to be brand new what I'm
- 5:59about to say. Maybe no one ever said it
- 6:01before, but it doesn't matter. It's built on the old and
- 6:05supplied to the new. That's when it comes to to our
- 6:08learning. Now let's apply it to ourselves.
- 6:11Our lives, to our learning is a concept.
- 6:14Our lives is more of a reality. And it's as follows.
- 6:19When you think about developing or working on your character,
- 6:23becoming a better person, your mindset should be the exact same
- 6:28mindset #1 I want to be like they were.
- 6:32I want to go what they told me to do.
- 6:34I want to be like I was without a display that a person should
- 6:37become. But at the very same time, I
- 6:41want to have my own angle. I want to have my own
- 6:46perspective on character. I want to have my own stamp on
- 6:50things. Every person is different, every
- 6:52person has a different character.
- 6:54And by when time was on, every person has a new angle on
- 6:58character. And the goal is clear.
- 7:01You want to be Yashan and Hadash at the same time.
- 7:06Old built on the foundations and the valley.
- 7:09You want to be built on the foundation, Italians on building
- 7:11the foundation. So you want to be going with
- 7:14what we have based on our old Torah, based on our rules of
- 7:18character. But at the same time, you need
- 7:21and want, in order to become a better person, to be applying it
- 7:24to a new way. You can't just look into the
- 7:27blueprint and the playbook of the old and say I'm going to be
- 7:30like them. That will not guarantee a
- 7:33perfect character, a developed character.
- 7:35A developed character is a person who builds on what he was
- 7:39told and taught and learned and reads and has seen and also
- 7:45builds on his own perspective, his own sight to the future, his
- 7:49own modern situation in life. Right.
- 7:53Today's character is perfect. Today's perfect character would
- 7:58not be the same as character from 20 years ago.
- 8:01It's a different thing. It's different requirements.
- 8:04I'll give you a word that people use today that they never use
- 8:06you for. People use a word a lot more
- 8:08often. It's a word of love.
- 8:11I love this, love that. I love you, right?
- 8:15Normally you, you save the word. I love you to your children and
- 8:19your wife, right? I don't know if you told it to
- 8:21your parents. OK, Now people say love this,
- 8:25love that, love the other thing all the time.
- 8:28Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
- 8:29It's a modern thing. It's not a bad thing.
- 8:31It's not specifically the greatest thing.
- 8:33You see. It's that word like it's like,
- 8:35it's like, it's like, it's like, it's like, oh, that's that's a
- 8:38different word. It's not like it sounds like a
- 8:40shoe. It's a way of talking, true.
- 8:42My point is with the word love is that today for certain people
- 8:47to display your affection, to show your appreciation, you
- 8:52going a little further, you go a little more of the word love.
- 8:56It's an example. It's a modern example.
- 8:58There are many examples of how we go a little bit differently.
- 9:03We take these a little differently and we understand
- 9:05that. If I were just the same as my
- 9:08father or grandfather's generation, I might be, in the
- 9:11current modern world, a little cold, right?
- 9:14If my warmth was my grandfather's generation of
- 9:18warmth would be nice, but it may not be the kind of nicer the
- 9:22world requires today if a parent is to his children the way his
- 9:28parents were to him, right? I give you a perfect example.
- 9:32My father to me was the most warm, loving father was but at
- 9:35the same time very not involved. He wasn't very busy with
- 9:40involved in my life in every detail.
- 9:43I don't think he knew him with my teachers names.
- 9:45I don't think he knew what I was learning at the time when I was
- 9:48a kid. I don't think he knew many
- 9:50things going on. He wasn't really involved like
- 9:53that. It didn't take away at all.
- 9:55Most many people's parents and those generation were not
- 9:58involved. If I tried that today and I
- 10:02didn't try that in the beginning, I did, it would be
- 10:05literally a derelict of duty. Absolutely.
- 10:08I doubt the father does not know whose parents teachers are their
- 10:12names today. That's literally not that's
- 10:16considered not being involved and not being a on top of a
- 10:20father. And in fact, you and I would
- 10:22tell that dad, I recommend you get involved because your
- 10:26children need you. You know, I've noticed because,
- 10:29you know, we were doing something for my family over
- 10:31this past Shabbat and like a little get together, celebrate
- 10:34the baby. So I noticed that my children
- 10:37were lacking proper attention over the course of this past
- 10:41week. Why were you lacking attention?
- 10:43Because we were focused on having a big Shabbat get
- 10:45together. So the the little slight lack of
- 10:48attention was showing. I cannot.
- 10:52When I was a kid, I didn't get attention for six months at a
- 10:54time, and you couldn't notice. Literally, you couldn't notice
- 10:58what happened. Today, the modern Hadash world
- 11:03requires a whole different angle of parenting.
- 11:05How did you know? How can I tell my children they
- 11:08were acting my. Well, I'll give you a cut.
- 11:10I'll cut One kid was acting very wild Friday night.
- 11:13Extra wild. That's all the wild.
- 11:16Yeah. He seemed very fun.
- 11:20There. We here, Here, we here.
- 11:21You probably didn't even see them.
- 11:22They're probably running on the roof.
- 11:24OK, there's ones Really. Didn't see that and that extra
- 11:27wild. And I got a report like for a
- 11:29while that Shabbat there as well.
- 11:31I was warned by a little baby who's who's, you know, right
- 11:34above the new baby was like clinging to my my wife's leg on
- 11:39my leg the whole time with like a certain sense of like almost
- 11:43sadness. And you can tell that she was
- 11:45not herself. And these are the 2 signs my
- 11:47wife took. They showed that the baby was a
- 11:49little more attention seeking. I said, come on, honey.
- 11:52You can't really tell if from one week it's overdoing it.
- 11:55But the truth is, she's right. That's one example.
- 11:57Parenting is a classic example. You know, you have to be
- 12:00involved to be on top of your children.
- 12:02They have a phone. You have to be watching with
- 12:03this thing on the phone. They have friends.
- 12:05You have to be. I can tell when there's an issue
- 12:08with friends, when there are click problems and all these
- 12:11things. And in the old days, the
- 12:13children figured them out themselves.
- 12:15Yeah, Sean was one thing. But at the same time, who is my
- 12:19blueprint for parenting? My parents.
- 12:22So my parents are my blueprint for parenting.
- 12:24But if they wrote a book on parenting and and it went down
- 12:29to the details, it wouldn't fit for the modern day.
- 12:31How do you explain that? That is the essence of our Torah
- 12:34in every area. It's built on Yashan and built
- 12:38on Hadash. The same thing is true with all
- 12:40areas of character. If you simply tell a person be
- 12:44humble like they always were, it's true, be humble.
- 12:47But at the same time you need to have a sense sense of a modern
- 12:50day approach to confidence and security and the feeling who you
- 12:54are. You can't just say be like the
- 12:56old rabbis. I give you a classic example.
- 12:58I try to model my rabbis ISM based on my father for sure, and
- 13:03also based on the old rabbis, because old rabbis had a certain
- 13:06sense of low key and they were, there was no sense of anything.
- 13:10He didn't, you know, they weren't at all out there.
- 13:13But today Aman the rabbi is a well known person.
- 13:17He's a borderline superstar. Aman, the rabbi, he's very well
- 13:21liked. He walks to the table room and
- 13:23everyone comes over there. He's very much more involved to
- 13:26people. Absolutely all this.
- 13:29So this structure for me is also a bit of a challenge that we
- 13:32work on. Be like the old, but adapt to
- 13:35the new a little bit and figure out your way forward.
- 13:38Every Jew in every area is built on Yashan and Kadosh.
- 13:43And when Rosh Hashanah comes, which is a brand new year and
- 13:47you're thinking about renewing yourself and creating a new
- 13:50sense of self, anything about I want to be that kind of
- 13:53character and that kind of father and that kind of husband
- 13:57and that kind of learner and that kind of member of the
- 14:00community and that kind of individual who has said, don't
- 14:03just say I'm going to go by the old blueprint.
- 14:06It won't work. People who do, actually, they
- 14:10don't get so far in life. You need an area of newness of
- 14:14Hadash. You learn how to develop, you
- 14:16learn from experience, build on the foundations of experience,
- 14:20just but adjust to the new world.
- 14:23Take an old coach, right? You and I both know and we
- 14:26analyze football, any sport we cannot stand.
- 14:30I personally cannot stand. I know I'm in my 30s.
- 14:32I don't like that 30 year old coach.
- 14:34I'm not a fan of a 34 year old coach who thinks he knows
- 14:37better. He didn't play college football.
- 14:40If I don't want an old coach, if they always talk about, you
- 14:43know, the guy who just got let's go a couple last year or a
- 14:46couple years ago, who probably one of the best coaches of all
- 14:49time. We all know what happened or
- 14:51what happened to him during his first college game, right?
- 14:55He got blown out. It's a shock.
- 14:56It's not a shock. He was a coach who developed
- 15:00along those lines of old archaic worlds.
- 15:04He's his way is gone pretty much.
- 15:06He needs to adopt to college players.
- 15:09It's a whole new world, young people.
- 15:11But at the same time, the young guy who thinks he knows it all,
- 15:14who's in his 30s, who's hip and who basically lets his players
- 15:18do what they want, but he's shocked and he's, you know, and
- 15:22all that nonsense. At the end of the day, you give
- 15:24him a couple of years, his team will run right over him and
- 15:26they'll back up 'cause he's got no shot.
- 15:28That's how it works. You need to have the combination
- 15:32of the foundations of the old and the application of the new.
- 15:36That is what I was, what I was built on, and in fact, every
- 15:40area of life isn't built on. So I sham created the world then
- 15:43and I recreates it everyday. Foundation and Nunes, the Torah
- 15:48can never change, doesn't budget, and at the same time we
- 15:51developed Hindu share Torah. That's a contradiction.
- 15:53No, it's not because the Hindu share the new Torah is built on
- 15:58the foundations of the old. If you have a new idea that goes
- 16:02against our Torah, throw it out. If you have a new idea, it's
- 16:05built in our Torah. Beautiful Hindu, share Torah,
- 16:08write a book. And the same thing is true with
- 16:10character. If you have character that's
- 16:12built on the foundations of the old, it's built on humility,
- 16:15it's built on hard work, it's built on honesty, it's built on
- 16:18integrity, built on a person who's developing a Quentin, a
- 16:21model of Hashem. Beautiful, but apply it to the
- 16:24modern day, apply it to the modern world.
- 16:27And with that combination you become what a Jew is trying to
- 16:30become. So there's coming roshanah
- 16:32kadosh. You want to be new, but you want
- 16:35to build it on the character and the ways of our old.
- 16:39We'll stop with this, right? That's the idea.
- 16:41The behind, yeah.
