Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Forget About How Things 'Should' Be
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily A body here bringing you another installment
- 0:22Speaker 1: of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I know I spoke
- 0:26Speaker 1: to you not all that long ago about going to
- 0:28Speaker 1: my first fitness class since early twenty twenty, and I
- 0:34Speaker 1: have become a bit more brave and went to two
- 0:39Speaker 1: more this week, which just felt amazing. And I was
- 0:44Speaker 1: very intentional about which two that I went to because
- 0:49Speaker 1: I felt so hard last weekend that I needed to
- 0:53Speaker 1: stretch in a way that I haven't in forever, and
- 0:57Speaker 1: decided that it was time that I got back to
- 1:00Speaker 1: hot yoga, and so I won't liue like I was
- 1:03Speaker 1: definitely anxious about hot yoga because hot yoga, you know,
- 1:06Speaker 1: how we used to go to hot yoga was us
- 1:09Speaker 1: getting into a room. There'd be tons and tons of bodies,
- 1:12Speaker 1: especially if you live in a metropolitan area in New
- 1:14Speaker 1: York City. I remember some of the first yoga classes
- 1:17Speaker 1: hot yoga classes that I went to in New York
- 1:19Speaker 1: were what felt like one hundred people next to each other,
- 1:24Speaker 1: corralled in like cattle, just sweating on top of each other.
- 1:28Speaker 1: So I knew that that wouldn't be the case because
- 1:32Speaker 1: of the parameters that are in place and the guidelines
- 1:36Speaker 1: that are in place, but I decided that I was
- 1:39Speaker 1: going to go back. I made the call to go
- 1:42Speaker 1: to one of my favorite studios here in New York City.
- 1:44Speaker 2: It is called lions Den.
- 1:45Speaker 1: They used to have two locations, one in Tribeca and
- 1:49Speaker 1: one in Chelsea, and because of the pandemic, now they
- 1:52Speaker 1: only have this location in Chelsea. And so I ran
- 1:57Speaker 1: a couple of miles and then city biked the rest
- 1:59Speaker 1: of the way to class. And I was pleasantly surprised
- 2:03Speaker 1: when I showed up and there were three other people
- 2:07Speaker 1: in class. I was able to have like a whole
- 2:10Speaker 1: quadrant of the room. I won't even say like a
- 2:13Speaker 1: space to myself. I literally had at least like a
- 2:17Speaker 1: fourteen by fourteen square that.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Was mine and mine only.
- 2:21Speaker 1: And so that made me feel really at ease and
- 2:24Speaker 1: as wonderful as it has been to connect with other
- 2:27Speaker 1: people via whatever we've all been able to do over
- 2:30Speaker 1: the last fourteen months over Zoom, I mean, nothing compares
- 2:35Speaker 1: to being in that room, especially, I would say for
- 2:38Speaker 1: me when it comes to hot yoga. Of course, the
- 2:42Speaker 1: heat in the room was something that I could not
- 2:44Speaker 1: in any way replicate at home, But just the feeling
- 2:48Speaker 1: of that, combined with the words of the instructor and
- 2:53Speaker 1: the right playlist. I found myself as we were in
- 2:58Speaker 1: a frog pose, which is my probably least favorite yoga
- 3:01Speaker 1: pos in the world, at the end of class and
- 3:04Speaker 1: the woman teaching was talking about the importance of not
- 3:09Speaker 1: worrying how things are supposed to be right. So much
- 3:12Speaker 1: about how we are executing our lives right now is
- 3:15Speaker 1: completely different than it used to be, and we have
- 3:20Speaker 1: these ideas of how things should be or how we
- 3:23Speaker 1: might want them to be for so many reasons, and
- 3:26Speaker 1: letting go of that and being present in the moment
- 3:30Speaker 1: and not having judgment about the way that something isn't
- 3:34Speaker 1: and focusing on what is and having gratitude for that.
- 3:38Speaker 1: That's what we were focusing on. And in this moment,
- 3:41Speaker 1: the music was just right, and I had just sweat
- 3:45Speaker 1: tons for fifty four minutes of the sixty and I
- 3:50Speaker 1: just felt so so grateful to be there and embrace
- 3:57Speaker 1: how it is and not think about what it isn't
- 3:59Speaker 1: and and enjoy truly the opportunity to be back in
- 4:03Speaker 1: that room and feel safe in that room.
- 4:07Speaker 2: It's something I didn't know when would happen again.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And I'm a firm believer in that it's up to
- 4:12Speaker 1: us all to seek out our own individual joy in
- 4:16Speaker 1: a way that makes us feel safe and comfortable. And
- 4:19Speaker 1: this moment was just such a beautiful moment for me
- 4:22Speaker 1: this week, and one that I encourage you all in
- 4:25Speaker 1: some way to replicate in whatever way you feel okay doing,
- 4:30Speaker 1: not necessarily within a fitness class by any means, but
- 4:34Speaker 1: asking yourself, what is it right now, maybe this weekend,
- 4:38Speaker 1: maybe next week, that you can enjoy and truly be
- 4:42Speaker 1: fully present and embrace for what it is without the
- 4:46Speaker 1: judgment of what else it could be or what it isn't.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Highlights of the week Read green Lights by Matthew McConaughey.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I'm so excited to announce that this is going to
- 4:57Speaker 1: be the next Hurdle book Club pick. The date for
- 4:59Speaker 1: this will soon be to come. I just dove into it.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I started it last week and I can already tell
- 5:05Speaker 1: that it would make for a great conversation in the
- 5:08Speaker 1: show notes. If you want to participate, you will find
- 5:10Speaker 1: a link to order the book and many hurdlers let
- 5:13Speaker 1: me know after I posted the cover of this on
- 5:15Speaker 1: social media that the audiobook no surprise because of Matthew
- 5:18Speaker 1: McConaughey's unbelievable voice is excellent sign up to be kept
- 5:22Speaker 1: in the link for book club and I hope to
- 5:25Speaker 1: see you there. Watch Changing the Game on Hulu. I
- 5:29Speaker 1: came across the release of this documentary from a Refinery
- 5:32Speaker 1: twenty nine article and I am so excited to make
- 5:35Speaker 1: some time to catch it this weekend. It follows the
- 5:37Speaker 1: lives of three high school athletes, all at different stages
- 5:40Speaker 1: of their athletic seasons, personal lives, and unique paths as
- 5:44Speaker 1: transgender teens. The trailer highlights an important point that for
- 5:48Speaker 1: these athletes, sports is not just about competition, It's about work, collaboration, resilience, expression,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and community. In celebration of Pride month, thought that this
- 5:59Speaker 1: was a great highlight to add to the mix. Also
- 6:02Speaker 1: worth checking out Iron Cowboy James on Instagram.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Now.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I don't know if you have heard of James Lawrence yet,
- 6:10Speaker 1: but he just accomplished the most insane feat that is
- 6:14Speaker 1: impossible not to highlight here, and that is that he
- 6:17Speaker 1: completed one hundred full iron Man's in one hundred days.
- 6:22Speaker 1: On Tuesday of this week, he completed number one hundred
- 6:25Speaker 1: and I am just blown away, and I mean the
- 6:28Speaker 1: best part about this, aside from just like how unreal
- 6:31Speaker 1: the athleticism that is involved to accomplish this feat, is
- 6:34Speaker 1: that he joined with multiple organizations to raise money during
- 6:37Speaker 1: his challenges, most recently Operation Underground Railroad. I am all
- 6:42Speaker 1: for supporting athletes who also give back, so for sure
- 6:46Speaker 1: check it out. And now a listener question.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Hi Emily, the is Sarah a big fan of hurdle.
- 6:54Speaker 3: The question I have is your morning routine is very
- 6:57Speaker 3: disciplined and has really seemed to set you up for success.
- 7:00Speaker 3: How do you get into that mindset every morning to
- 7:04Speaker 3: wake up, show up for yourself and really go through
- 7:08Speaker 3: those motions in an inspired way?
- 7:10Speaker 2: Thanks so much, Honestly, this is what I'll say.
- 7:14Speaker 1: The mindset to wake up, the drive to get out
- 7:19Speaker 1: of bed comes from me knowing that I am better
- 7:24Speaker 1: because I'm doing it right. I am better for the
- 7:28Speaker 1: rest of my day, for the people that I want
- 7:30Speaker 1: to show up with to work with. If I give
- 7:34Speaker 1: back to myself first thing in the morning. You don't
- 7:37Speaker 1: need to be a morning exerciser to get the most
- 7:41Speaker 1: out of your morning, but I will say that having
- 7:44Speaker 1: a routine in place that lifts you up, that fills
- 7:48Speaker 1: you up is going to be the game changer for
- 7:51Speaker 1: how you go about the rest of your day. Actually,
- 7:54Speaker 1: if you're not subscribed to the Weekly Hurdle, the link
- 7:57Speaker 1: to do so is in the show notes. This week,
- 7:59Speaker 1: I'm talking about my productivity hacks secrets for my most
- 8:04Speaker 1: productive days, and I think there's a lot of gold
- 8:07Speaker 1: in there when it relates to this question. Thanks so
- 8:10Speaker 1: much everyone for listening this week, and thanks all of you.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Haven't caught up with the Run Week episodes from last week.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I'm answering a lot of questions throughout that series of
- 8:17Speaker 1: content that are coming into my DMS on the regular,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and I highly recommend you give it a listen. Make
- 8:23Speaker 1: sure you're following along with Hurdle over on social It's
