Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily body here.
- 0:19Speaker 2: You are listening to five minute Friday Unhurdle the first
- 0:23Speaker 2: of twenty twenty six.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Happy New Year. Hi Hello.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I hope everyone had a good holiday, a good New
- 0:31Speaker 2: Year's Eve, a safe New Year's Eve, and you are
- 0:34Speaker 2: feeling prepared. I say prepared, because, oh my goodness, I
- 0:41Speaker 2: swear that for the last what felt like the better
- 0:45Speaker 2: part of the last two weeks, I was the only
- 0:47Speaker 2: person online. And what I think should be going on
- 0:53Speaker 2: because everyone is taking off, is up there taking the
- 0:55Speaker 2: time to really soak in family and think forward. I
- 1:02Speaker 2: know this isn't actually what's happening, but get to a
- 1:04Speaker 2: place where they can show up back at their desks
- 1:07Speaker 2: next week and we can really dive on in. I
- 1:11Speaker 2: love a fresh start. If you have been around here
- 1:14Speaker 2: for a while, you know this about me. I firmly
- 1:17Speaker 2: believe that any single second is the opportunity to start fresh.
- 1:21Speaker 2: That you don't need to wait for the turn of
- 1:22Speaker 2: a new year to get in this fresh start mindset.
- 1:26Speaker 1: But it does help a little bit.
- 1:29Speaker 2: And so when I say I hope that you're prepared,
- 1:31Speaker 2: we've got stuff to do.
- 1:33Speaker 1: At least I know that I have stuff to do.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And goals to go after, and that is a big
- 1:39Speaker 2: part of the reason why I decided to jump start
- 1:42Speaker 2: with the Hurdle thirty one. For those that may not
- 1:45Speaker 2: be following on social, what that is is a thirty
- 1:48Speaker 2: one day challenge where we're going to be doing some
- 1:51Speaker 2: guided journaling, some manifestation, and coming up with four goals
- 1:56Speaker 2: for the year in four key areas. Those our health, relationship, finances,
- 2:03Speaker 2: and work. Those are our four areas that we will
- 2:06Speaker 2: be focusing on. So if you want to join in,
- 2:09Speaker 2: it's not too late, especially if you're listening to this
- 2:11Speaker 2: in real time, you can head on over.
- 2:14Speaker 1: To the link in the show notes.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And I'm also going to be hosting a live goal
- 2:20Speaker 2: setting workshop next week on the evening of January seventh,
- 2:24Speaker 2: at seven pm Eastern. Information on that is also in
- 2:28Speaker 2: the show notes if you want to join that a
- 2:30Speaker 2: la carte. As a highlight, if you do join the
- 2:35Speaker 2: Hurdle thirty one program, you get complimentary access into that
- 2:38Speaker 2: goal setting program as long as you are SVP. I'm
- 2:41Speaker 2: going to be sharing all these details on social and
- 2:45Speaker 2: in the weekly Hurdle email this Friday as well, but
- 2:48Speaker 2: just so you have them, just so you're in the loop.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I got you readering here anyway, five minute Friday. Over
- 2:55Speaker 2: the last month, I hosted a separate journaling Childe in
- 3:01Speaker 2: the Daily Hurdle Chat over on Instagram at Hurdle Podcast,
- 3:05Speaker 2: and there were a lot of really interesting moments of
- 3:07Speaker 2: reflection that I had throughout the month. I will say
- 3:11Speaker 2: the prompt that stumped me the most was what do
- 3:15Speaker 2: you want your word to be? For twenty twenty six?
- 3:20Speaker 2: The last few years, when I've asked myself this question,
- 3:23Speaker 2: it's really come to me quite clearly.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Two years ago, my word was great.
- 3:30Speaker 2: For so long, my family motto is do good, and
- 3:32Speaker 2: for so long I was okay with good. And I
- 3:36Speaker 2: got into this place where I came to terms with
- 3:40Speaker 2: this idea that I didn't just want good anymore.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I really wanted great.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And so everything that I was doing, I was asking myself,
- 3:48Speaker 2: is this going to help me get to great? And
- 3:51Speaker 2: that was the word for twenty twenty four. When I
- 3:55Speaker 2: went into twenty twenty five, the word that I was
- 3:59Speaker 2: really leaning into was flexibility. I am someone that likes
- 4:05Speaker 2: things to be a certain way. I'm definitely a bit
- 4:08Speaker 2: type A, and I knew that if I wanted to
- 4:11Speaker 2: achieve some of my goals, not only would I have
- 4:14Speaker 2: to be flexible in my methods, but I would also
- 4:16Speaker 2: have to be flexible in the timing or the goalposts,
- 4:21Speaker 2: if you will. Although yes, there are firm things that
- 4:24Speaker 2: I am after, the accomplishments and the milestones that I
- 4:28Speaker 2: hit this year, many of them weren't things that I
- 4:31Speaker 2: wrote down at the top of twenty twenty five. And
- 4:34Speaker 2: that's because I was willing to be flexible with my pursuit,
- 4:39Speaker 2: with what I was going after, and candidly, some of
- 4:43Speaker 2: the things that happened, they were better than I even anticipated,
- 4:46Speaker 2: than I even imagined.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So we had great. We had flexible.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And as I sat on my couch on Wednesday morning
- 4:55Speaker 2: thinking about what I wanted my word to be for
- 4:57Speaker 2: twenty twenty six, I felt little bit blank. And then
- 5:02Speaker 2: I started writing a list, and there are a lot
- 5:05Speaker 2: of words on this list, and I wrote down literally
- 5:08Speaker 2: in the journal I'm going to come back to this
- 5:10Speaker 2: later today. And as I was walking to the gym
- 5:14Speaker 2: to do my last little session of the year, it
- 5:17Speaker 2: really dawned on me that what I want my twenty
- 5:20Speaker 2: twenty six word to be is strong, and not just
- 5:24Speaker 2: in the physical sense, although of course that's always aspirational
- 5:28Speaker 2: and I certainly have strength goals of my own. But
- 5:32Speaker 2: what I mean is, in my conviction, I want to
- 5:35Speaker 2: be a hell yes person in twenty twenty six. I
- 5:39Speaker 2: want to do things that I feel very strongly about.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I want to feel strongly period. I want to be
- 5:46Speaker 2: all in on the things that excite me. When I
- 5:50Speaker 2: do something, I want to give it all that I have.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I want to do it with every ounce of strength
- 5:55Speaker 2: that I can muster. Now, don't get me wrong. There
- 5:59Speaker 2: are days that I'm going to need to be solved.
- 6:01Speaker 2: There are days that I'm going to have to have
- 6:03Speaker 2: grace with myself. I'm gonna have to have grace with
- 6:06Speaker 2: the world.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I get that.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But I am ready to show up as my strongest self.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I am ready to stand firm in who it is
- 6:15Speaker 2: that I am and what it is that I have
- 6:17Speaker 2: to offer and where I want to go. And a
- 6:21Speaker 2: big part of that strength comes from getting very clear
- 6:25Speaker 2: not only on who I am, which has been something
- 6:28Speaker 2: that I have been working so diligently on for the
- 6:31Speaker 2: past let's say four or five years now, but also
- 6:34Speaker 2: in what I have to offer and knowing those things
- 6:38Speaker 2: and being able to articulate my values and what's important
- 6:41Speaker 2: to me and what makes me great, that makes me stronger.
- 6:46Speaker 2: If I'm saying this and you're thinking to yourself, I
- 6:48Speaker 2: want to be able to do those things. This isn't
- 6:51Speaker 2: a plug, but it's a plug. The Hurdle thirty one
- 6:53Speaker 2: is going to help a lot with that. So if
- 6:55Speaker 2: you want to get better at articulating your values, if
- 6:58Speaker 2: you want to get more clear on who it is
- 6:59Speaker 2: that you are and what it is that you bring
- 7:01Speaker 2: to the table, I would be honored understatement to help
- 7:05Speaker 2: you do that. So my Word of the Year twenty
- 7:09Speaker 2: twenty six is strong, at least one of them, and
- 7:14Speaker 2: I want to help you feel like your strongest self
- 7:16Speaker 2: next year as well. It's been a really special three
- 7:19Speaker 2: sixty five, and I'd be amiss if I didn't say that.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I wouldn't be here without all of you. You empower
- 7:24Speaker 2: me to keep showing up. You are the reason why
- 7:26Speaker 2: I keep creating and I get to have these conversations
- 7:30Speaker 2: that inspire me to be my best and strongest self.
- 7:34Speaker 1: So thank you.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Also a belated happy Birthday to Hurdle. Hurdle was submitted
- 7:40Speaker 2: to what was then called the iTunes store. It wasn't
- 7:44Speaker 2: then Apple Podcasts. It was submitted to the iTunes store
- 7:46Speaker 2: on December thirty first, twenty seventeen, and we are officially
- 7:50Speaker 2: eight years old. So new Hurdlers, Old Hurdler's og Hurdlers.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I love you.
- 7:55Speaker 2: All, and help me celebrate the birthday by sharing this
- 8:00Speaker 2: episode or any of the episodes that you love on
- 8:02Speaker 2: your socials, with friends, with families, with coworkers, whoever. Your support.
- 8:07Speaker 2: It always means the world. Now, before I let you go,
- 8:09Speaker 2: you know how it works. A listener question. Hey, Emily,
- 8:13Speaker 2: noticed that you did a pretty big closet purge earlier
- 8:17Speaker 2: this week, and I'm feeling really motivated to do the
- 8:20Speaker 2: same at the start of a new year. Curious how
- 8:23Speaker 2: you decide what to keep and what to let go
- 8:26Speaker 2: of and if there's any advice you can give on
- 8:28Speaker 2: how to organize to make things a little bit easier
- 8:31Speaker 2: to manage. Thanks so much and love the show, Kara.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Hey Kara, Okay, I'm going to start with the back half.
- 8:39Speaker 2: When you say easier to manage and how to organize,
- 8:41Speaker 2: that's really going to depend on your space. I live
- 8:44Speaker 2: in a Brooklyn apartment and although there is a fair
- 8:47Speaker 2: amount of space. I don't have a ton of storage,
- 8:50Speaker 2: and so my closets are filled to the brim, which
- 8:53Speaker 2: is a big part of the reason why I feel
- 8:56Speaker 2: like every other month I am taking everything out of
- 8:59Speaker 2: them and then putting everything back into them and trying
- 9:01Speaker 2: to get rid of the things. Anyway, my rule of
- 9:04Speaker 2: thumb when it comes to organization and purging, if you will,
- 9:09Speaker 2: is that if I pick up an item of clothing
- 9:11Speaker 2: and I haven't worn it in a year, then more
- 9:14Speaker 2: often than not, I'm donating that item of clothing now.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Sometimes there's going to be something that you pick up
- 9:20Speaker 2: and it brings some sort of an emotional connection. Fair
- 9:24Speaker 2: I want you to think about that item next to
- 9:26Speaker 2: an item that you wore last week.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Would you choose.
- 9:30Speaker 2: The item that you have this little bit of an
- 9:33Speaker 2: emotional connection to even though you haven't worn it in sometime,
- 9:36Speaker 2: or would you choose the item you wore last week.
- 9:38Speaker 2: If the answer is the item you were last week,
- 9:41Speaker 2: then the item's gotta go.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Period.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Every time I do some sort of a purge, I
- 9:46Speaker 2: also put a pile to the side of items that
- 9:48Speaker 2: I think that some of my friends would really love.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Knowing that I have this opportunity to get a lot
- 9:53Speaker 2: of new workout gear and sneakers and whatnot, and so
- 9:57Speaker 2: I try to spread the wealth. But that's my biggest
- 9:59Speaker 2: rule for when it comes to cleaning out my closet.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I very rarely have an instance where I keep something
- 10:05Speaker 2: and I think to myself, I'm gonna have the perfect
- 10:07Speaker 2: opportunity to wear this, and then I actually find the
- 10:10Speaker 2: perfect opportunity to wear this. That's a big reason why
- 10:13Speaker 2: over the last few years I've been really really into
- 10:17Speaker 2: services like Newly and Rent the Runway.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I will include my Newly link in the show notes.
- 10:22Speaker 2: I believe if you get into that, you can get
- 10:25Speaker 2: thirty dollars off through that link, but you get something
- 10:29Speaker 2: like six items a month, I think, and it's under
- 10:31Speaker 2: one hundred dollars, and it really just helps when I'm
- 10:33Speaker 2: planning my month and thinking about what I want to
- 10:35Speaker 2: wear and saves me money in the long haul. With
- 10:39Speaker 2: that said, make sure you're following along over on social
- 10:44Speaker 2: It's Hurdle podcast. I'm over at Emily Abadi. I hope
- 10:46Speaker 2: to see you join us for a Hurdle thirty one
- 10:49Speaker 2: or our goal setting workshop next week. And again, Happy
- 10:54Speaker 2: New Year, grateful for all of you another hurdle conquered.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time.
