- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Every night before the news, I watch this. Tipping point.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Todd Woodbridge is joining us live. You can watch, by
- 0:08Speaker 2: the way, the 70 years of television special on tonight
- 0:12Speaker 2: at 8.45.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And there is a tipping point.
- 0:13Speaker 2: 70 years of television special on Thursday at 7.30pm on
- 0:20Speaker 2: Channel 9 and 9 Now.
- 0:21Speaker 1: And Todd Woodbridge is going to be hosting. He joins
- 0:24Speaker 1: us live.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Hello, mate.
- 0:25Speaker 4: Hey, Todd.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Hey.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Good morning, guys. How are you?
- 0:28Speaker 1: Happy 70th TV birthday.
- 0:31Speaker 2: I know.
- 0:32Speaker 4: I know.
- 0:32Speaker 3: It's a big one, isn't it? It's a kind of
- 0:35Speaker 3: a weird thing. I've been watching a couple of specials
- 0:37Speaker 3: I've had on over the last two weeks and you
- 0:38Speaker 3: look back and you go, how the world has changed
- 0:41Speaker 3: since television started. And it's not that long when you
- 0:44Speaker 3: look at it. It's incredible.
- 0:46Speaker 2: 70 years, yeah. I mean, there's people older than that. Now,
- 0:49Speaker 2: you were a tennis player. Then you got into the TV.
- 0:51Speaker 2: How did that all come about?
- 0:53Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, yeah, look, it's a strange one, isn't it?
- 0:57Speaker 3: I've been around telly since I was a kid. And
- 1:00Speaker 3: even though my tennis, if I go back 11 years
- 1:03Speaker 3: of age, I was being interviewed about my tennis on
- 1:05Speaker 3: Simon Towns' Wonder World. So I was a kid. I
- 1:10Speaker 3: obviously went and played some good tennis around the world.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Then post my end of my career, I decided I
- 1:15Speaker 3: want to do commentary. So I thought that that was good.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Go into the expert seat. From there, we call that
- 1:21Speaker 3: the right seat in commentary, by the way, the expert.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Then the left seat in the commentary box is the lead.
- 1:27Speaker 3: That's the person that does the ins and outs, talks
- 1:29Speaker 3: about the color, a bit about life. throws you to break,
- 1:32Speaker 3: comes back out of it. And so I've moved into
- 1:35Speaker 3: that and then from that into the host chair. And
- 1:37Speaker 3: then it was like, okay, where do we go from here?
- 1:39Speaker 3: And I was pretty lucky to be thrown into an
- 1:42Speaker 3: audition pool for Tipping Point. And I came along and
- 1:45Speaker 3: they go, they look at it and they go, this
- 1:47Speaker 3: guy can do it. And the rest is history, really.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:51Speaker 4: And so, obviously, you talk about the pressures of live
- 1:54Speaker 4: TV preparation kind of mirroring that of, you know, the
- 1:58Speaker 4: discipline of professional tennis.
- 2:01Speaker 1: What would you say is more nerve-wracking? Yeah, surely tennis.
- 2:05Speaker 3: No, it is tennis, for sure. Tennis is– I'm doing
- 2:09Speaker 3: a job now that I find– It gets a bit
- 2:12Speaker 3: tiring because we do 160 episodes a year. It's like
- 2:16Speaker 3: you getting up every morning, doing all that sort of stuff. But,
- 2:18Speaker 3: you know, tennis is life or death, quite literally. You
- 2:22Speaker 3: win or you lose. You're either brilliant one day or
- 2:24Speaker 3: you're not the next. I was going to say something else, but,
- 2:27Speaker 3: you know, you're a loser the next. And that's really
- 2:32Speaker 3: hard mentally to deal with. And what I've learned about
- 2:35Speaker 3: coming into the TV side of things, just be yourself.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Just try to be natural. You're going to make mistakes.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I make mistakes all the time, but... I own them.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Just have fun with them.
- 2:43Speaker 1: If you make a mistake in tennis, you lose. But
- 2:47Speaker 1: I always think people prefer vulnerability.
- 2:50Speaker 4: If you stuff up or miss a word or anything
- 2:52Speaker 4: like that, everyone's human, right?
- 2:55Speaker 1: Totally.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Talking of Tipping Point, man, I watch it every night,
- 2:59Speaker 2: usually the last half an hour, to be honest. I
- 3:01Speaker 2: don't care about the start. But Nat, our producer, also
- 3:04Speaker 2: watches it.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Yep.
- 3:06Speaker 1: No, you've got a theory. I've got a conspiracy theory. Okay,
- 3:08Speaker 1: you ready, Todd?
- 3:08Speaker 3: And my parents love Tipping Point.
- 3:10Speaker 4: And they also believe this. Now, tell me, just be
- 3:13Speaker 4: real with me. No one's really listening anyway. There's magnets
- 3:16Speaker 4: behind the machine, right?
- 3:17Speaker 3: Absolutely not. Come on. No, there's no magnets. There's a
- 3:24Speaker 3: little bit of, you know, sticky tape and some stuff
- 3:28Speaker 3: like that.
- 3:29Speaker 4: No.
- 3:29Speaker 3: The counters are actually, what do we call them, like plastic. Oh,
- 3:35Speaker 3: are they? Yeah, they're not actually metal.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah. They do tinkle tinkle a bit. But it's hard
- 3:43Speaker 3: to have magnets on things that are not metal. That's fair.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You've proven me wrong there.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I sit there sometimes and there are contestants that you
- 3:52Speaker 3: desperately want them to win because it contains their lives.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And there's others you go, oh, you'll be fine.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Don't worry too much.
- 3:58Speaker 4: I have another question for you, Todd. Do you feel
- 4:00Speaker 4: bad because part of your job is right at the
- 4:02Speaker 4: end you try and tempt them into taking a higher
- 4:05Speaker 4: offer and get rid of all their current money to
- 4:07Speaker 4: gamble it for more? If they lose, do you feel
- 4:10Speaker 4: bad and is.
- 4:11Speaker 1: It awkward afterwards?
- 4:12Speaker 3: It just depends if they'd be nice to me or not,
- 4:15Speaker 3: you know. I had no idea. I've got to tell you,
- 4:18Speaker 3: I had no idea that I could be, like, a
- 4:21Speaker 3: used car salesman. I didn't have that in my job
- 4:23Speaker 3: description repertoire, to be honest.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I actually sometimes look at that, and they're like, no,
- 4:28Speaker 1: I'll take the money, and it's, like, $ 2, 000.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I'm like, maybe I'm being out of touch here, but
- 4:33Speaker 2: I'm just like, wouldn't you gamble that for.
- 4:35Speaker 3: $ 50, 000? Well, that's what they do, and, you know... The
- 4:40Speaker 3: only thing I feel sometimes is when we get younger
- 4:42Speaker 3: people on and you go, and there is a difference
- 4:44Speaker 3: between that 2K for someone that's 20 to somebody that's
- 4:48Speaker 3: 35 or 40, if you know what I mean. I'm going,
- 4:51Speaker 3: because I'm a dad, right, and I've got two young kids.
- 4:53Speaker 3: I'm going, oh. I would be good not to have
- 4:55Speaker 3: to hand that over this month to help out with
- 4:57Speaker 3: the rent, you know. So I'm thinking, no, don't do it,
- 5:01Speaker 3: don't do it. And then, you know, I do have
- 5:04Speaker 3: a conscience sometimes.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah, well, it's part of the game though, isn't it?
- 5:08Speaker 3: It is part of the game.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Todd, you were nominated for the Gold Logie this year.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Was that something you were expecting?
- 5:15Speaker 3: No, imposter syndrome, totally.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Well, yeah, can I ask you about that?
- 5:18Speaker 2: I actually spoke to you on the red carpet and
- 5:20Speaker 2: I was like, oh, that Todd Woodbridge is such a
- 5:22Speaker 2: nice guy. And you said to me, I said, oh, mate,
- 5:25Speaker 2: you're up for the thing. And you go, I feel
- 5:27Speaker 2: like I have imposter syndrome. I don't feel like I
- 5:29Speaker 2: belong here.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Why is that?
- 5:32Speaker 3: Well, look, I mean, if you're walking down a sports
- 5:35Speaker 3: red carpet and I've got trophies and Olympic medals and
- 5:38Speaker 3: things like that, I kind of own it. But that's
- 5:41Speaker 3: even a part of what this special that we got
- 5:44Speaker 3: on on Thursday night is about. You know, Glen Ridge,
- 5:47Speaker 3: Nicky Buckley, the people that you grow up watching on
- 5:50Speaker 3: TV and shows, that's their space. And I'm sort of
- 5:52Speaker 3: walking down their carpet. So that's why I feel a
- 5:55Speaker 3: little bit like that at times. But So I'm taking
- 6:00Speaker 3: ownership of it now, I guess. The whole thing with
- 6:03Speaker 3: the Gold Logie, though, I mean, that is completely something
- 6:07Speaker 3: that was never on my radar. I never thought you
- 6:10Speaker 3: could be in that space. Yeah, I'd be in sports broadcast,
- 6:12Speaker 3: but this is entertainment TV. This is where people sit down,
- 6:15Speaker 3: have a laugh, have a good time, and it crosses
- 6:19Speaker 3: all of that type of boundary between sport and whatever
- 6:22Speaker 3: else in life. Yeah. Look, I'm just running with it.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I'll vote one day for the gold Logie for you.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Come on.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Yeah, get in and vote. I've got a feeling that
- 6:34Speaker 3: this year might have been my one year to have
- 6:37Speaker 3: gone close. And we did go close. But, look, if
- 6:41Speaker 3: that ever happened again, that would be something crazy as well.
- 6:45Speaker 3: But I just keep doing my work, just keep chipping away,
- 6:47Speaker 3: trying to give people a little bit of money here
- 6:49Speaker 3: and there and steal a bit off them on another day.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Well, you're doing well, mate. Love watching it.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And you can catch 70 Years of Television special tonight, 8.45,
- 6:57Speaker 2: and then the Tipping Point special, 70 Years special on Thursday, 7.30.
- 7:03Speaker 1: All on 9 and 9 now. Todd Woodbridge. Thank you, mate.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Thanks, Todd. Good on you guys. Appreciate you having me
- 7:08Speaker 3: on the show.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Take care.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Cheers, man.
