Transcript
- 0:00Your dog helped win A5 figure deal for your business.
- 0:03You are a business owner that travels around the country as
- 0:06like a traveling nomad, right? And you're killing it in your
- 0:09business. You guys are doing amazing right
- 0:11now. RV life slows life down just so
- 0:15much. For you, you're probably going
- 0:16to be on the go anyway so you can stop and physically see
- 0:19customers. And in person, I can look at the
- 0:21guy and I'm going to get him to look at me and I'm going to get
- 0:23him to focus on what I'm saying. I can't do that on Zoom.
- 0:25So while you still get to see people and it's better than, you
- 0:29know, not being on zoom or better than a beats a phone
- 0:31call. I'm complete old school, but I'm
- 0:33walking across the showroom and a guy across the showroom just
- 0:36looks at me and he goes not interested.
- 0:38You know, kind of made a fool out of me and I'm like, that's
- 0:40crazy. They're really a holes.
- 0:41You know, I'm going like, but This is why I want this life
- 0:45because I could just go, how could I get the interest and
- 0:48then go see them and not have to knock on doors the way I did it
- 0:52completely cold my whole life. We're going to do that mail and
- 0:55he goes and I'm telling you right now the only reason I'm
- 0:56doing is because this dog right here and I'm.
- 1:02So I'm really excited to have you on the show and, and to just
- 1:04dive into your world and what's going on.
- 1:06And I'm pretty hopeful that other founders and business
- 1:10owners will be able to learn from your experiences and what
- 1:12you're going through. So let's get into a man.
- 1:15The first thing I definitely get back to that 5 figure deal that
- 1:17was close through Wyatt, your dog.
- 1:20First of all, how did you first get on the road like as a
- 1:22business owner, entrepreneur? Like what brought you to where?
- 1:24Because you had a house and then you sold it and then now you're
- 1:27just literally on the road like you don't have a house.
- 1:30No, I don't have. Actually.
- 1:33May 31st will be 6 years of no home.
- 1:37Wow. Absolutely no home.
- 1:38I mean, I do have technically I do have an apartment over there.
- 1:43You got an apartment? I have, I have a place that I
- 1:45that I rent that I never see. Basically it's I'm, I'm
- 1:49nonexistent there. I'm on the road.
- 1:52I guess what, what really happened was I, I did a lot of
- 1:56traveling before I did the RV and I did that with hotels, but
- 1:59I always had a dog. So it was just hard finding
- 2:02hotels. Then I joined into the RV life
- 2:05form like, oh, I love it. I, I can, you know, I can stay
- 2:08where, you know, I can go wherever I want.
- 2:10I don't have to worry about booking hotels at night.
- 2:12And then I had a house in Connecticut, which was my last
- 2:14house. And in 2018, in a 5 month
- 2:20period, I literally spent eight nights in my house and I'm like,
- 2:25why do I need this? What's the point?
- 2:27Why do I, why do I need this? I was literally, I would get
- 2:31home and my first thought is where we going next?
- 2:34And, and I just said, you know what, why don't I just give this
- 2:38a shot? And I wasn't sure.
- 2:40I mean, I really wasn't sure. You know, you're not sure if
- 2:41you're going to like this, love this.
- 2:43And I, and I decided that you know what, I'm going to give it
- 2:47a shot. But I got two big storage units
- 2:49and I put all my stuff enough for a, you know, 2 bedroom house
- 2:53in storage. Just not sure what it was going
- 2:56to be like. And I went out on the road and
- 2:58my first stop was Tennessee. I had to do business and I
- 3:02literally got there and I was like, what did you do?
- 3:07I was sure this is what I. Exactly.
- 3:09I said are you know, what did you do you know and I'm like you
- 3:13have no home. This is it.
- 3:14This is your home. You have.
- 3:15At that time I had no residence. Oh, not even the rent.
- 3:18Not even the nothing. I had nothing and I'm like what?
- 3:21It's a little scary. Yeah, it was very scary.
- 3:23And, and I, I was sitting there and I'm like, OK, I thought
- 3:27about it and I said, well, you know, I'm leaving here.
- 3:28This was kind of business and I was going out to Colorado and
- 3:32California to do a little business, but that was more
- 3:34pleasure and business. I had some, you know, people to
- 3:37see out there. And I'm like, so I said, I
- 3:39thought about that and I said, well, you know, you going out
- 3:41there, you really like it out there.
- 3:43And so let let this just, you know, let this simmer for a
- 3:48little bit and see how it works out.
- 3:49And I got out to Colorado. I loved it.
- 3:52And I'm like, OK, maybe feel better.
- 3:54And then I went to California and that was where it that's
- 3:58kind of where it got a little interesting.
- 4:00I was at a beautiful park. I love California, beautiful
- 4:02weather. But for what I do advertising
- 4:04and automotive, the area where I stayed at, they don't do mail.
- 4:08And I was told this when I started walking in just trying
- 4:10to introduce myself and guys were like, they were like, you
- 4:12know, this is an area where this is the way they.
- 4:16By cars. And they, they get on their
- 4:17phone, they buy a car. Most guys aren't going to be
- 4:19interested in what you do. And, and one guy who was an East
- 4:23Coast guy said some of these guys are probably going to be a
- 4:25little bit, you know, harsh with you because it's they, they
- 4:28don't like your that type of stuff.
- 4:30And I, I have thick skin. I don't really care.
- 4:32So I started walking in and, and I got actually treated pretty
- 4:36rudely. And I have, and it doesn't
- 4:37bother me, you know, I'm like, hey, I walk in.
- 4:39I don't walk in with a briefcase.
- 4:41I walk in with an iPad. If you're not interested, thanks
- 4:43for your time, move on. But I'm walking across the
- 4:46showroom and a guy across the showroom just looks at me and he
- 4:49goes not interested, you know, kind of made a fool out of me.
- 4:52And I'm like, wow, these guys are really, they're really a
- 4:56holes. You know, I'm going like, you
- 4:58know, it's just bad. You know, you don't do that.
- 4:59I mean, there was no need to do that.
- 5:01And so I kind of was like, you know, this just isn't an area
- 5:04for me. And I'm went back and I'm
- 5:07sitting in the RV and I paid for a month.
- 5:09I seen my friend twice who I came out to visit and I'm
- 5:12sitting there and I had my other dog Jenny, at the time.
- 5:14That's who I started this with. And I just look at her on the
- 5:17couch and I go, we're out of here.
- 5:20And right there I said This is why.
- 5:24This is. Me, but This is why I want this
- 5:27life because I could just go, it was just it wasn't working out
- 5:33and I just left and I go right there.
- 5:35I said this is this, this this is this is the type of life you
- 5:39want. Because when I go somewhere and
- 5:41I love it and I enjoy it, I could stay as long as I want.
- 5:44I could stay for a year if I wanted to or I can leave in a
- 5:47day. And then I just said, you know
- 5:48what? Since that point, it's just it's
- 5:52just gotten better and better. And that was really it.
- 5:55It it, I think it really helps to have the, you have a really
- 5:58nice RV, right? Like so nice that when I was on
- 6:00the first zoom call with you, I was like, Hey, he's got this is
- 6:03a nice house. And then you're like, I'm in the
- 6:05RV. I'm like, no, like where your,
- 6:07your background's like a fake. You're like, no, I'm in it and
- 6:10I'm like, oh shit, that's actually it.
- 6:11Like it looks nice because I think for me it's like we're in
- 6:14humans, we're creatures of habit, right?
- 6:16So it's like for me, I think about man, if I didn't like wake
- 6:18up in my house every morning, have my coffee routine and this
- 6:21and that. But you probably just set your
- 6:22own routines. You just set your own routines
- 6:24because you have kind of a mini moving house, right?
- 6:27So that kind of keep some stability, right.
- 6:30Would you agree that if you were just on the go on a car and had
- 6:32to go to different hotels everywhere?
- 6:34Oh yeah, it's a. That would be.
- 6:36Yes, right. I gotta, I gotta take, I gotta
- 6:38pack up my computers. I bring a lot of stuff because
- 6:41how do? You have good Wi-Fi wherever.
- 6:42You're I always well I have 4:00.
- 6:44I have 4 hotspots OK, so and I carry and plus I have satellite
- 6:47plus I have I have satellite and I have starlink.
- 6:51I have to be connected have to that's a that's a must.
- 6:54So if you can throw me out the woods, I'm getting online.
- 6:57Can you explain what Starlink is for those that don't know?
- 6:59Like how is that different than a hotspot type of thing or the
- 7:01same thing? No, Starlink is satellite.
- 7:03So you're working with satellites, but so you doesn't
- 7:07matter. You can go out in the middle of
- 7:08the ocean. You don't need a tower, you
- 7:10don't need any kind of cell reception.
- 7:12You're using satellites to get it.
- 7:14And how good is it compared? To it's fantastic.
- 7:16The the only weird thing about Starlink, which I find
- 7:20interesting is that with with like satellite TV, like DIRECTV,
- 7:25DIRECTV, you'll lock on to a satellite and it just locks on.
- 7:28It seems like with Starlink, it'll roam, it'll switch to
- 7:31different satellites. So for whatever, the way it's
- 7:33set up, even though you're pointed in One Direction and
- 7:36it's roaming satellites. So every once in a while you
- 7:38might just, I think I've had zooms with you where I pause for
- 7:41a second out of nowhere. That could just happen.
- 7:44It doesn't happen a lot, but the second it just reconnects in
- 7:47seconds. But when you're connected, I'm
- 7:50running 200 and 5300 megs a second download.
- 7:53It's super fast. And that's way better than
- 7:55trying to connect to no signal or having shitty Wi-Fi.
- 7:58You can't. And then I just go, I can put, I
- 8:01could just go, you know, just use that and make Wi-Fi calls
- 8:04through my through the Internet. So if we were here now, unless
- 8:07they were in a cabin in the woods and it's like in the
- 8:09middle of nowhere and I'm trying to use, you know, let's say my
- 8:13computer's here, my iPad phone and I have Starlink.
- 8:16Do I have to have it in a certain place location?
- 8:19Does it got to be pointing somewhere outside?
- 8:20Like how does? How does this set up?
- 8:21The only. The only.
- 8:22I'm actually curious. Yes, well, actually the the only
- 8:25downfall to it is that you can't have blockage with with like
- 8:29DIRECTV and other satellites. You can have some kind of
- 8:32blockage there and and you could still get it.
- 8:35This has to have a clear shot at North.
- 8:37Got it, And and North. Specifically.
- 8:40At North specifically, so you could put it up on top of the
- 8:42RV, you can hang it from a tree, it doesn't matter.
- 8:45But if you're, you're going up and you're, there's a big tree
- 8:47blocking it, you're going to, you're going to get very, very,
- 8:50very spotty. You can, I've had it get through
- 8:53some trees, but you really just need a clear spot.
- 8:56So being out in the wilderness is great because it's wide open.
- 8:59You're always going to feel, you know, have a clear spot.
- 9:01But some of the state RV parks that I stay at are just filled
- 9:05with trees. Oh yeah, you're.
- 9:07In a cabinet in there because trees you you're not going to,
- 9:10you're not going to get it. That's why I have, then I have
- 9:14my other hotspots and then so then I can just use Wi-Fi.
- 9:17If I don't have that, I can use, you know, just boosters, which I
- 9:21have. So one way or another I'm
- 9:23getting online. So it's really hard.
- 9:27Six years and I've never been in a spot where I can't get
- 9:30connected. Nice.
- 9:31What are some of the like pros and then even cons of having a
- 9:34business on the road all the time?
- 9:36Maybe let's start with pros like what are some of the big
- 9:38advantages aside from you just get to see amazing places like
- 9:42travel and do cool shit. But like from a business
- 9:44standpoint, right? Maybe if founders are listening
- 9:46to this being like maybe I want to try like renting something
- 9:49for a month and seeing if this might be cool for me.
- 9:51I could, I could work that backwards and say I don't have
- 9:54any downfalls really. I don't have I have no
- 9:57limitations because I can go wherever I have to be at any
- 10:02given time. Yes, I have no schedule, right.
- 10:05So if if it's like, oh man, I can't get out there.
- 10:08Sorry guys, man, I'm just you know, I'm tied up here.
- 10:11I can't leave now. This never happens with me,
- 10:13right? So I don't I have because I'm
- 10:16connected, because I'm now we were remote before the pandemic.
- 10:20So you know, we were we were actually doing this kind of
- 10:23lifestyle. You know, I was and and my right
- 10:27hand person, Caitlin, she and she's a military wife.
- 10:30So in 2014 she said, Hey, would you ever consider me running
- 10:35things from remotely? And I said, I have no idea.
- 10:38Why don't you take a computer, go home and I'll see you in a
- 10:40month. That's awesome.
- 10:43She goes, really? I said.
- 10:44That's a good entrepreneur and a good leader you.
- 10:46Know and I just said we'll we'll find out and nothing changed
- 10:50nothing. We didn't miss a beat.
- 10:51We just everything was as smooth as as ever.
- 10:54You guys were in an office before that and then you just
- 10:56said, hey, go try it out. That was it.
- 10:58And I had there was six other people in that office.
- 11:00I had two offices in in Raleigh, NC actually.
- 11:03Carrie, Wow. And I know a place, so that was.
- 11:07That's where that's where Caitlin was.
- 11:09And then once that noon once I just since 2016, I got rid of
- 11:12that. I kept the New York office, but
- 11:14I got rid of that. And that's when I started
- 11:16traveling. That's when I got my first RV in
- 11:1916. I started going completely part
- 11:21time. But like I said, every time I
- 11:23got home, it was just, it was, it's different because I think
- 11:28that the biggest thing to me, and this is just a life thing,
- 11:33life is spinning fast. It's, you know, life just spins
- 11:36fast. It does just goes by as simply.
- 11:38It gets faster when you get a little older too, like as you
- 11:40mature. Yes and yes, and I can tell you
- 11:43this, I don't, you know, I've never really pulled anybody on
- 11:46this because RV life, but RV life slows life down just so
- 11:52much. I mean, two weeks at an RV park
- 11:55feels like. Why is that?
- 11:58Do you think? I have my kind of theory on
- 12:00that, but you probably know better.
- 12:01I get up and well, first of all, you, you know, you kind of
- 12:04combined, you know, you had a park or whatever.
- 12:06And I get up and just like you're start your day, you know,
- 12:08and, and next thing I'm just, I'm sitting outside with my
- 12:11laptop and I'm, I'm cooking breakfast and I got a fire going
- 12:14and you're relaxed and you're like, and you're just working.
- 12:17You go 8:00 in the morning, man, this day, all day.
- 12:20Yeah, I got all day. And it's like it's just such a
- 12:23relax and just quiet and, you know, and just, I don't know, in
- 12:27my house, I just, there's just distractions.
- 12:29Yeah, I'm doing these things right.
- 12:31There's just so much more going on.
- 12:33I just feel like times like this, it just spins.
- 12:36And in the RV life, it just, it slows down like, you know,
- 12:40coming here. So I'm, I'm coming here from
- 12:42Pennsylvania, then I'm staying here and I'm staying here.
- 12:44Pennsylvania's pretty to drive. It's pretty.
- 12:46Yeah, there's, there's right there, there's everywhere.
- 12:48You feel like it's very surprising when.
- 12:50You go out. Central Illinois is very boring.
- 12:53For India, a lot of places are very bland, but but I could tell
- 12:57you that, yeah, that was that. Perspective, though, man, that's
- 13:00like, yeah, I think it's less distractions.
- 13:03It feels like it'd be just like, you know, I've been thinking a
- 13:05lot about the next vacation. How do I go to a place where I
- 13:09can, like, me and my girlfriend can connect with the wilderness
- 13:11and connect with Earth? And I think maybe you're just
- 13:13connecting with like the inner human being that you have,
- 13:16right? It's like we're not meant to be
- 13:17in these things and apartment buildings and houses and be on
- 13:20electronics. We're kind of meant to be out in
- 13:23the wilderness. And have you ever gone camping?
- 13:25Yeah, when you go camp. That's why I see the time
- 13:28slowing down. Like it's just like, yeah.
- 13:30You go camping, you go and it's like this, this becomes not as,
- 13:34not as important camping, It's just a relaxed, you just relax.
- 13:38That's why, which is shocking to me being a full time RV uh,
- 13:42it's, I'm going to say 7075%. It could actually be more in
- 13:46some places that I'm like, OK, all these people in these RV
- 13:49parks, you know, they're going to be from all over, 7080% are
- 13:52local. They're less than two hours away
- 13:55from that park. They just want to go because
- 13:57when they go there, they just get away from the noise and it's
- 14:01quiet and it's calm and it's relaxing.
- 14:04Well, put yourself in that mindset and that you know the
- 14:07way your body feels like that, and that's every day.
- 14:11That's really cool. So you go, why is it slow down?
- 14:14Because everything slows down. The noise slows down, you know,
- 14:18and just, it just does. And so I big, huge plus to me is
- 14:22that, you know, I'm, I'm, I'm getting up there and age well.
- 14:27And I think one of the one of the good advantages, I'm sure
- 14:30you would agree is that you can't, you are so local, you're
- 14:33not tied down. So it's like for you, you're
- 14:35probably going to be on the go anyway.
- 14:36So you can stop and physically see customers, which I see is a
- 14:40massive advantage. And we do that too.
- 14:42I go see customers, they come into town, I fly out to go see
- 14:44them because you just build better relationships, you get to
- 14:47know them better, They become lifelong customers.
- 14:49Like I I really believe that's a big aspect of business that
- 14:53people sometimes just think we're just doing virtual, we can
- 14:55do the Zoom, we don't have to do it in person.
- 14:57Sure, you don't have to, but if you did, it might just change
- 15:01things for the better, you know? Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:05You know when you go on Zoom and Zoom is fine, but when I'm
- 15:10sitting here and I'm looking your eyes.
- 15:11Totally different and that's why we do the live podcast because
- 15:15you cannot do a Zoom or a virtual podcast and get the same
- 15:19type of emotional interaction, the same type of vibe that you
- 15:23get with someone being here. The way that we can look in each
- 15:26others eyes, the the conversations that we have the
- 15:30you just can't it's hard to read somebody on a video call right
- 15:33and then the content we can get is so much better too, right and
- 15:36the same for you. You can film in person with
- 15:38like, it's just, there's so many reasons to do it in person, but
- 15:41it's also that's now another hurdle or challenge because now
- 15:44you got to be in person, you got to get people here or you got to
- 15:47meet them somewhere. So for a lot of people that's a
- 15:49challenge, but for me it's like I don't want to do it any other
- 15:52way. Well, here's.
- 15:53I don't want to do a virtual podcast.
- 15:54Here's a perfect example of to me in business, why it's so
- 15:58important for me to be in a in a room with people.
- 16:00I'm on a Zoom call. I was on a Zoom call a couple
- 16:03months ago and there was four guys and me and four guys were
- 16:06from a company, a new company I was talking to about business,
- 16:09and I could see that one of the guys is distracted.
- 16:13He's not listening to me. I have no idea if he's hearing
- 16:15anything that I'm saying. That's a good.
- 16:17Point. You can easily do this like
- 16:18yeah. That's what I'm seeing.
- 16:20He's clearly distracted, like, and he was the most important
- 16:23guy in this conversation. I'm going, I'm losing this.
- 16:26I can't, you know, I can't read through and go, yeah, you know,
- 16:31you pay attention, you know, so, so I to me, I was like, you
- 16:35know, in person I can direct my focus and my voice and my I'm
- 16:39going to look at the guy and I'm going to get him to look at me
- 16:42and I'm going to get them to focus on what I'm saying.
- 16:43I can't do that on Zoom. So while you still get to see
- 16:47people and it's better than not being on Zoom or better than a
- 16:50pizza phone call, it's never to me.
- 16:53I'm complete old school. That's why the RV life to me is
- 16:57so, so awesome. And here's the other thing that
- 17:00is kind of surprising, you think, well, you know, hey,
- 17:03you're out in California and I'm in New York and you know, yeah,
- 17:06I'm never going to see you. I see my dealers more since I've
- 17:08been full time RV than I did when I lived anywhere, even the
- 17:12local dealers that were close to me where I lived, because every
- 17:15time I go near their area, I go by them every time and I
- 17:18crisscross. So I'm never going to.
- 17:21I, you know, I'll go out of my way to get to my clients.
- 17:23My clients are the most important thing.
- 17:25So on any path when I'm going here if I have to go like this
- 17:29just to make. Sure, why not?
- 17:31Anytime I'm in that region, I'm seeing every one of them every
- 17:34time. If I live there.
- 17:36How often are you getting busy? And then I got to take trips
- 17:38here and I'm going here for a month and here I might see him,
- 17:41not see him for five months, six months.
- 17:43And here on the road, every 3-4 months Max.
- 17:46I see everybody and some of them faster than that because I don't
- 17:49always go all the way West and all the way E I'm somewhere in a
- 17:53region for a while, like I was just in the southeast for, you
- 17:57know, a couple of months. But the second I break out of
- 17:59that, I got to shoot out to the other regions and get through my
- 18:03so you just keep that. And then I, I love the, to me, I
- 18:07think the biggest thing about me is that the biggest challenge I
- 18:12think people have being on the road is the, is the, the travel
- 18:16is like my brother's like, how do you drive, you know, at 3000
- 18:20miles and you know, and everybody loves the
- 18:23destinations, but they don't, they don't want to, you know,
- 18:26take the ride there or fly there and go through all that, the
- 18:29airport or traveling. And I just love the journey.
- 18:33To me, the journey is every bit as fun.
- 18:36Sometimes I enjoy the journey more than, than the, than the
- 18:40destination because I get so excited about going to
- 18:43somewhere. Then you get there and that way
- 18:45it's like climatic a little bit you.
- 18:47Built it up in your mind. But in your mind, but in
- 18:49building that up as I'm going there, I'm so.
- 18:51Excited. And the travel out there and you
- 18:54know, and then all the things I see on the way.
- 18:56So that's to me, it's a lot of it is, you know, so much of it's
- 19:00here, it's how, how you feel. So totally, I think that's a
- 19:03good lesson too, is enjoy the journey because the destination
- 19:07could be great. It could be not so great.
- 19:09But if you enjoy the journey and that's 80% or 90% of it, you get
- 19:12there, you can still enjoy the mountaintop and the destination
- 19:15and what you've done and what you've accomplished to get
- 19:16there. But now you've been excited and
- 19:18fulfilled on the way there and that's fucking everything,
- 19:21right? Everything.
- 19:24Do you ever get lonely? Because that would be like one
- 19:26thing I would be like, man, it was just me, like my, you know,
- 19:28a dog or something. I'd be like, I might get, I
- 19:30might want some company, you know, you can meet people
- 19:32obviously, but like the. The the one, the one part that I
- 19:37would say about that is that I I get to experience so much fun
- 19:42stuff. Sometimes I just wish I was
- 19:43experiencing it with somebody other than my dog, my dog and I
- 19:46get to experience it. So it's a different type of
- 19:48lonely. It's almost like, man, I wish I
- 19:50had somebody. Oh my God, like, oh, I like, I'm
- 19:53looking at these incredible things and my dog can't
- 19:55appreciate. So your dogs are like, no, not
- 19:57right. It's like.
- 19:58My dog's like, hey, you know, hey, can we go climb up this?
- 20:01And I'm like, will you look at this beautiful view?
- 20:03And that's the part that I just wish I could share with
- 20:06somebody. So that's the that is the lonely
- 20:09part to me. You know, I see so many people
- 20:12that I'm friends with. I meet a lot of people.
- 20:14So it's a different type of lonely.
- 20:15It's just being able to have somebody I can enjoy so much
- 20:19unique stuff with and and and just because to me, I don't care
- 20:23like. You could tell me today a place
- 20:25in Idaho that is unbelievable and I can't wait to go there.
- 20:29So if I'm with somebody, you know, a companion and I'm, you
- 20:32know, doing things with them, I don't care where they want to
- 20:34go. I, I love everything.
- 20:36There's no, well, I really like this.
- 20:38I don't like that. Bring it on.
- 20:39I don't care because it's all to me.
- 20:41It's all just, it's just to me, it's that's why I live this life
- 20:46because I get to to enjoy things that I didn't think I might even
- 20:50enjoy. And then I go and I go, Oh my
- 20:52God, like this is awesome. So.
- 20:54Have you been to like the Apple? Well, you've been everywhere, so
- 20:58that's a guarantee. Appalachians.
- 20:59The Appalachians I'm like thinking about like cool
- 21:02mountain kind of towns to go to and maybe get in the woods and
- 21:05mountains a little bit like get that connectedness with earth
- 21:08and have some spiritual type things.
- 21:09But then also having like, cool little mountain towns to go hang
- 21:13out at, do dinner at, you know, explore.
- 21:15That is a that's a very interesting like.
- 21:17Or maybe there's somewhere else in the country that you know
- 21:19you'd recommend? Well, it's not, it's not even
- 21:21that. It's just, it's more of one of
- 21:24the things that I that I do is since I'm in an RV and I'm
- 21:29always in an RV and a lot of times like if you're trying to
- 21:32just travel to a lot of mountain towns and you're going up, you
- 21:36know. It's hard to get to them right?
- 21:38Especially when I'm, you know, 63 feet from tip to tip.
- 21:41Trailer and. Some roads I can't even go on
- 21:43because of the length. So what I do like I was just out
- 21:46in Colorado for a month and I stay at the RV park.
- 21:50I stay there for a month and I just detach.
- 21:53I take my truck and I went to Breckenridge, which is a great,
- 21:56great little town and I stayed in a lodge with a fireplace and
- 22:01overlooking the mountains. And and so I do that a lot where
- 22:05I break away from the RV. So it gives me a little bit of
- 22:08something different, but it's just to just go out and enjoy a
- 22:11weekend and I do that a lot. You know, obviously just you
- 22:14know, me and Wyatt, always a dog friendly place.
- 22:16And that to me is that to me is the ultimate because now I, you
- 22:20know, I go and I enjoy the RV part of it.
- 22:22And then I just break away to just go do something different
- 22:26and, you know, just stay somewhere, somewhere else.
- 22:29I'm going up to in the in the summer, I'm going up to Coeur
- 22:33d'Alene, which is a beautiful area.
- 22:35I've heard about that Idaho or where is that?
- 22:37Yeah, it's Idaho. It's.
- 22:37Northern Lane. Quarter lane it's.
- 22:40It's look that up, people, because I've heard a lot about
- 22:42that. What makes that place so great?
- 22:44It's beautiful. It's just beautiful.
- 22:46It's like mountains. You've.
- 22:47Got Lakes. It's Lake.
- 22:48It's it's Coeur d'Alene Lake. It's just, it's just a lot of
- 22:51risk, really. Yeah, well, I didn't realize I
- 22:54went. Which is why you going then no.
- 22:57This was the funny part. My, my, I was, we have the map,
- 23:02the RV maps, and I was trying to complete Wyatt's map and we had
- 23:06to do the five Northwestern states that I hadn't that she
- 23:10hadn't been to were it was North Dakota, Idaho, Washington,
- 23:14Montana and Oregon. And so we were trying to, you
- 23:20know, fill that out. And I was talking to my cousin
- 23:22who lives in Vegas and he's he was like, hey, man, he goes,
- 23:26when you go to Idaho, you got to go to this place called
- 23:28Sandpoint. And he said Sandpoint because
- 23:30his friend has a house on the lake in Sandpoint.
- 23:32Sandpoint's really beautiful. And so I went to look for an RV
- 23:36park and there was nothing in Sandpoint.
- 23:38And I saw this Coeur d'Alene. I couldn't even say it.
- 23:41I go, it's spelt weird, you know, Coeur, you don't go like,
- 23:46what is that, Kowari? And I'm like, I had no idea what
- 23:49it was. So I found an RV park there and
- 23:51I'm like, OK, I guess I'll stay there and I'll drive up to to
- 23:53Sandpoint and I go and I'm like, what?
- 23:56This place is gorgeous. And I'm sitting there and I and
- 23:59I go downtown and I'm like, it is just beautiful.
- 24:03So I was telling the people like, I'm talking to people that
- 24:05are local and I'm like, man, this town is absolutely amazing.
- 24:08They're like, yeah, we know. Don't tell anybody.
- 24:10Yeah, exactly. And then I started reading about
- 24:14it because I go, how could a place be like that, you know, so
- 24:16beautiful and. Hidden gem, right?
- 24:19Yeah. And I found out that that
- 24:21Matthew McConaughey and George Clooney, Kim Kardashian, Wayne
- 24:23Gretzky, John Elway, they all have homes on Coeura Lake.
- 24:26Yeah. So they're all famous people
- 24:28around the lake. You can't really.
- 24:30I tried to drive around and see some of their homes, but they're
- 24:33kind of buried. They're exclusive.
- 24:34They're gated, and you got to get down into their complexes.
- 24:37But on the lake itself, it's just beautiful.
- 24:40It's just a beautiful, peaceful, just it's, it's tranquil.
- 24:44It's really, it's just a beautiful area, so.
- 24:47Because you don't think Idaho like, where's the You're like
- 24:50Idaho like potatoes. People ask me all the time,
- 24:53what's the, you know, it wouldn't say it's my favorite
- 24:55place, but it was the most shocking place that I, that I,
- 24:58that I stumbled upon, you know, in, in the RV life not knowing.
- 25:03So what about the Appalachians then?
- 25:05Are there some cool places down there?
- 25:07Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely this.
- 25:09Yeah, I've been to every mountain range there is.
- 25:11I don't care. Like it's a much smaller
- 25:13mountain. Like if you're in the Rockies,
- 25:15like Vale or Breckenridge, like that's a different style of
- 25:17mountains, obviously, but absolutely.
- 25:19I haven't done nearly as much as I have in other ranges, you
- 25:23know, So I would say that it's the least the one that I've that
- 25:26I've travelled. But I don't care where you go.
- 25:29Mountain towns to me are amazing.
- 25:31Love it, love it. The Catskills are I I love it,
- 25:34you know? There's something about mountain
- 25:35towns that are just freaking cool.
- 25:37If you've never been to like Vail, Co Breckenridge, probably
- 25:41some good ones in the Smoky Mountains.
- 25:42Like they're they're. Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:44There's just some cool places, man.
- 25:45They have a different vibe. You feel like you're in nature,
- 25:48but it also in a town, like in the middle of nature.
- 25:51It's really cool. Better than the beach I think
- 25:53personally. I will take the mountains over
- 25:55the beach. Me too.
- 25:56I don't like the beach. I mean it's there's some pretty
- 25:58it's cool, but I just I don't like sitting on the beach for
- 26:01long periods of time. It just doesn't do it for me.
- 26:04I, I feel like a rotisserie might as well just spin me
- 26:06around while I'm, you know. Slow, like I'm just spinning
- 26:08around like, you know? Just cooking.
- 26:10I'm going like. Exactly my.
- 26:12Buddy lives on the beach. He just sent me a picture.
- 26:14He's like, hey, where do you think I'm going?
- 26:15He said to the beach. Like you can send me pictures
- 26:17like he's on. He just lives on the beach.
- 26:19I go it. Does nothing.
- 26:22Some people love it man. They just freaking love it.
- 26:24Going to it. Me too beautiful.
- 26:25But just it's just for the day. Like, yeah, I'll take the
- 26:29mountains. Me too, me too.
- 26:31Everything about the mountains I love.
- 26:33Yeah, I love. I just, you know, and I'm not a
- 26:35big fan of heights, but I love me too.
- 26:38Like going up to these top of these 14,000 foot mountains
- 26:41where there's no guardrail and you're like, you know, my heart
- 26:44is beating. At the.
- 26:45Go like this is like, you know, this.
- 26:48It's it's but it's exhilarating to me, so I'll take the
- 26:51mountains. How?
- 26:51Much does Wyatt mean to you? I think that to me, I've had
- 27:00three dogs and they've all kind of handed me off to the next one
- 27:04at night. Without them, I, I don't
- 27:07function. I don't, you know, when Jenny
- 27:09died, Jenny died suddenly and I just literally lost.
- 27:13I was, I had Jenny for 10 years. I started this in 2016 with
- 27:17Jenny. I had had Jenny, I, you know, I
- 27:20had Jenny for a total of 10 years.
- 27:23But I think about 5-6 years when we started RV and, and I was
- 27:27never away from Jenny. So Jenny was the first time that
- 27:29I had a dog full time. My first dog, Jesse, was when I
- 27:34would travel. Jesse stayed with a friend.
- 27:36Got it. Jenny traveled with me.
- 27:38Right. It's your best friend, man.
- 27:39It was just I spent in 10 years four days away.
- 27:43From from. From Jenny, four days I flew out
- 27:46to Vegas for NADA, for national, the, the dealers association,
- 27:50their, their yearly convention. So NADA and I flew out for that
- 27:55and 2016 and I flew out there for for four days.
- 27:58And that was the only time that I had I was away from my dog and
- 28:04I mean, so we were literally soul mates.
- 28:07We, she worked with me she's with me when I go to car
- 28:09dealerships. And then I was in New York.
- 28:12We were in a snowstorm the day before.
- 28:14We were playing in the snow. And then the next day she's just
- 28:18it's a Sunday. She's just no energy and I'm
- 28:21going like what's going on with her?
- 28:23And I'm like, this is scare me. I'm like, you know, the vet
- 28:25opens Monday. I'm like, I'm going to take her
- 28:27to an emergency room. I took her down to what is a
- 28:29glass open glass building. It's a open emergency room for,
- 28:33you know, vet and I rolled her in the door and she died.
- 28:37She was in that door 45 seconds. The lady we rolled it as soon as
- 28:40I rolled her in, the lady's like, I don't like the way her
- 28:42lips are put her on the table and she's she's got a scanner.
- 28:45She goes, her heart stopped. I go, what do you mean she goes,
- 28:47it just stopped. They said she goes, do you want
- 28:49me to try to revive her? I said yeah, yeah.
- 28:51I'm like, I'm freaking out. I'm like 45 minutes from when I
- 28:54left the RVI was back in the RV and my dog is gone.
- 28:58And I was like, Alex, I was lost.
- 29:00I was lost. And I was just like, I mean,
- 29:05the, the RV life full time. I love it.
- 29:07I'm telling you how much I enjoy my life.
- 29:09It doesn't work without the dog at all.
- 29:12This is this. It changes everything to me.
- 29:15Everything. So you go on.
- 29:16What does your dog mean? It's it's everything.
- 29:18It doesn't work without you know that That's that's my companion.
- 29:22So much of my trips are planned around her.
- 29:25Yeah, around. It would be lonely without the
- 29:26dog, I feel like. Right?
- 29:27Yeah, do it. Yeah, never in a million years
- 29:29could I do this without the dog. If you know, if you know if
- 29:32anything ever happened, I would I would immediately get enough
- 29:34like. You know that I just that's on
- 29:35my mom as she was like we always grew up with dogs.
- 29:37One would pass away. It's so sad, it's hard.
- 29:40It's just like a phantom family member, you know what I mean?
- 29:42Like it's like losing a brother, sister, husband, whatever.
- 29:45It's tough. And then you kind of grieve, you
- 29:47go through that and then you're like, all right, let's get in
- 29:49our dock because it's just you need to kind of have that, you
- 29:52know, that void build and you enjoy the company.
- 29:55You just love it. It's it's fun, right?
- 29:57Like it's it's nice. They're nice to have around.
- 30:01Let's let's talk about Wyatt again here because we I
- 30:03mentioned the beginning that you want a 5 figure significant deal
- 30:07from Wyatt and Wyatt was able to help you kind of land this.
- 30:09So tell that story. OK, so there's a there's a guy
- 30:14his name is Rich and he owns, he owns a Toyota on Honda store in
- 30:18New York and he's New York. He's a New York.
- 30:21I'm a New Yorker. So he's a bit of a hard ass guy
- 30:23and he doesn't trust male guys. A lot of people don't,
- 30:26especially in New York, because there were guys that beat the
- 30:29system and shorted male and manipulated poster receipts and
- 30:32did some bad things and actually there you know it, it put a, you
- 30:36know, bad name out there for for guys that do what we do So Rich
- 30:40I was referred to rich. So he cut me some slack, but he
- 30:44he, you know, he lets me in, but not, not all the way in, you
- 30:47know? And he's always, you know, he's
- 30:48like, yeah, you guys are all full of shit, you know, you
- 30:50guys. Yeah, I know.
- 30:51Yeah, Yeah, I know. The mail is great.
- 30:53Best Mailer ever. And I'm like Rich, I said, you
- 30:55listen, I got stuff that works well, you know, So he's always
- 30:58breaking my, my, my balls, basically.
- 31:00And so I was, I'm in there and we're talking about doing a mail
- 31:03and he's like, and, you know, hamming it on.
- 31:05And I'm like, whatever, you know, I kind of enjoy guys like
- 31:08that because it's a bit of a challenge to me.
- 31:10And he's just like, he just looks at me and goes, where do
- 31:12you live? I said, I'm a full time over
- 31:14here. I said, what do you mean he
- 31:15goes, what do you mean? I said, I travel to the United
- 31:17States with my dog. He goes, you and your dog.
- 31:19That's it. I go, yeah, He goes, where's
- 31:21your dog? I said, my dog's in the truck.
- 31:22He goes, your dog's in the truck, Go get your dog.
- 31:25And I'm like, OK, I go out. I'm like, are you serious?
- 31:28He goes, yeah, go get your dog, man.
- 31:29It's like I bring my dog in and he is just loving up my dog.
- 31:34He's like going like this with his phone.
- 31:35He's like, oh man, this is my dog.
- 31:36I've had anything and he's. Got he's got a box.
- 31:38Of treats and he's and he's just like and up and he's just eating
- 31:42up my dog. And I'm like, oh, like this guy
- 31:44was like in heaven with my dog. And I go, I just look at him.
- 31:47I go Rich, I thought you were a prick.
- 31:50That's exactly what I said to him.
- 31:51I said I, you know, I didn't know you had a heart, you know,
- 31:54I just thought you were a prick, you know?
- 31:56And I'm like, you know, just always like, you know, a tough
- 31:58guy just breaking balls, you know, and.
- 32:00Sometimes they have the softest hearts.
- 32:02Yeah, and. New Yorkers are kind of like
- 32:04that, right? Everything would help you if you
- 32:06needed it, but kind of hard on the on the surface.
- 32:08He's, he's sitting there and he's sitting back in his chair
- 32:10and he's going like this and he's like, we're going to do
- 32:13that mail. And he goes, and I'm telling you
- 32:14right now, the only reason I'm doing is because this dog right
- 32:16here and. Wow.
- 32:18Whatever works, man. So Wyatt closed the first deal.
- 32:21Nice, Where is Wyatt right now? Why it's in the RV?
- 32:25Because I didn't know how. I was going to say.
- 32:27Yeah, I would, I would always bring her, but we're pretty
- 32:29close. I'm only 30 minutes away, but
- 32:31normally I bring her and she'd be in the truck, but it was a,
- 32:33you know, it could be a little warm today.
- 32:35So I didn't know if it was going to be too hot out there.
- 32:37So and if and this could take a little while.
- 32:39So I normally would just leave her and let the truck run if I,
- 32:42if I'm only going in for 10 minutes to stop in.
- 32:44But 99% of the time she's she's with me.
- 32:47Do you Speaking of mailers, right, you do direct mail for
- 32:50dealerships, obviously that's your business.
- 32:52How effective is direct mail now versus 10 years, 1520 years ago?
- 32:57Like has it changed? Is it more effective, less
- 33:00effective? The same like what do you think
- 33:02comes curiously, you've been in it for a while?
- 33:03It's completely different, yeah. And completely different.
- 33:07It's it the, the way if you rollback the clock really prior
- 33:12to 2008, 2007 8, where the where the auto industry really took a
- 33:16big hit prior to that mail was, was more about, well, just at
- 33:21least the mail that, that that way that we did mail was more
- 33:25eventful. It was more about, you know,
- 33:27Saturday mailers and get the balloons out and crank the music
- 33:31sound out a big mail campaign and a kind of a lot of rah rah
- 33:34and, and you just pack your showroom and you'd sell you
- 33:37break every record you had. You would limit the amount of
- 33:40time people would have. So you do like 14 hours, 7 day
- 33:43hours on a Saturday and seven hours on a Monday or Friday.
- 33:46Saturday always had dated mailers always, you know, get
- 33:50people to go spontaneous it that's just the way mail was.
- 33:53It was a lot of you know, it was just a lot of fun, a lot of
- 33:57entertaining things. You know when we would do some
- 33:59pretty wild and fun campaigns and they work great after 2008,
- 34:03seven, 8-9 people just you know, with the bad, you know, when the
- 34:08economy went tanked, people just not buying cars spontaneously
- 34:12like they were before. They wanted time, they wanted to
- 34:14shop and those rah, rah buy a car today 7 hours only just
- 34:19weren't working anymore. People were not buying that way.
- 34:21And I'm like, wow, we got it. You know, we got to adjust to
- 34:24this. And I started, you know, I
- 34:25started getting away from some of the gimmicky stuff and I
- 34:28started just doing things where I was, you know, I didn't date
- 34:31the the mail or I didn't give you.
- 34:32I wanted you to have time to be able to shop it because you
- 34:36weren't going to buy it the other way.
- 34:38So the messaging changed to where it was just, you know, and
- 34:42you started getting like, away from the gimmicky stuff, away
- 34:45from the yeah. Just.
- 34:47Like that what, what one of my clients calls left lane mailers,
- 34:50those high flying, you know, messaging you, you don't even,
- 34:53you look at it, you don't, your eyes don't even know where to go
- 34:55because there's 45 messages on it.
- 34:58And I just started doing more direct clean, just pointed
- 35:01messages and just getting real targeted to, to an audience and
- 35:05getting away from that. And I had a lot of success with
- 35:07that. And then the more time went on,
- 35:11the more I got got away from gifts.
- 35:13And then I'd walk into a dealer and when I wouldn't have gifts,
- 35:15the guy's like, you don't give away those sunglasses.
- 35:18I said, no. He goes, he opened up his
- 35:19closet. He got boxes of sunglasses and
- 35:21tool sets from all these other campaigns.
- 35:24And I go, you know what I realized what happened was I got
- 35:28less people in the door than the rah rahs, but I got buyers in
- 35:32the door. I didn't get tire kickers.
- 35:34I didn't get a guy who's going to take a test drive to get his
- 35:37tool set knowing he's not buying a car, wasting that salesman's
- 35:41time, knowing he's not buying just because he doesn't want to
- 35:43feel like, hey, can I just have the tool set?
- 35:46And I'd appreciate it if they just did that.
- 35:47Just go, give me the tools, take the tool set and go if you
- 35:50really have no interest. But they would feel like they
- 35:52just got to act like they're, you know, they're not cheap.
- 35:54They didn't come down just for their.
- 35:56Tool set. You know.
- 35:58Waste their time and they could be working with someone else
- 35:59that might buy. And I got away from it and then
- 36:02my whole concept changed. And as time went on, I got even
- 36:07more personal. I got, you know where we are
- 36:10today. Fast forward, I've been doing
- 36:11this, this is June 16th will be 24 years with my company.
- 36:15And in the last literally from the pandemic, I started making
- 36:21mail more personalized. I started using QR codes where
- 36:26now I was talking to the customers.
- 36:27I have QR codes on my Mailer. So you get a Mailer in your
- 36:30living room, you scan it and there's a message from the
- 36:33general manager and you know, they're talking to the customer,
- 36:35introducing themselves, telling them about that, that piece of
- 36:38paper in their hand has value to it.
- 36:40And with the what happened was everything started going
- 36:44digital. So I'd go and guys, guys like,
- 36:46you know, the way mail was kind of dying, people were like, oh
- 36:49man, I'd get 15 mailers the week in my mail that that crap
- 36:52doesn't work anymore. And it all went digital.
- 36:55And now I'm like, thank you guys because you got out of the
- 36:57mailbox. That's right.
- 36:59That's right there alone. That's right and I go keep
- 37:02talking about you because guys are just married to digital
- 37:04beautiful because it just helps my yes, it keeps you out of the
- 37:08mailbox keeps the clutter there. My messaging can be direct.
- 37:11There's still guys that do mail, but not the way.
- 37:13I don't see when it's. True.
- 37:15I don't see as much, Yeah. When I started doing the video
- 37:18mailers, I don't know, I didn't know a single dealer that was
- 37:22doing what I was doing with the QR codes and then having videos
- 37:25autoplay from a manager introducing himself and
- 37:28explaining that letter in the hand and the value that that
- 37:31brings to them. Now there might be guys that are
- 37:33knocking that off because I've been doing it now for a few
- 37:35years, but that's that's something that I believe I
- 37:38started. I hadn't seen it and I do
- 37:39nothing but mail and I still don't see anybody that does
- 37:42that. And then in the last two years,
- 37:45I was talking to one of my big clients and I said, Hey, you
- 37:48know, we bought the sales department in your, into your
- 37:51living room. How about we bring your service
- 37:52department there as well? And we started doing service
- 37:56walkthroughs, which were different, different than the
- 37:58sales manager talking about the Mailer.
- 38:00We'd go and we do, we shoot a 4K video at the, at the dealership.
- 38:06The entire service process for I fly drone footage, get some nice
- 38:10drone footage and then I fly it in as they're talking about, you
- 38:13know, come in and welcome to our service department.
- 38:16ABC mode is I fly the drone right into the service
- 38:19department. It turns into a car and it shows
- 38:21the whole process. The guy walking up greeting you,
- 38:24putting you in the computer, all the all the things that they
- 38:26have in there. You know all the conveniences
- 38:28they have when they have rental cars and shuttle services and we
- 38:31do a whole walkthrough and we include these in our mailers and
- 38:35here's the big key both videos that I'm shooting and doing
- 38:38editing and everything I'm not charging the dealers for it.
- 38:41I'm I'm doing these for different first time dealers.
- 38:43I'm doing the whole introductory videos for free and my price in
- 38:47the mail did not go up 1 pence. See, there's this extra value
- 38:50for them. Yeah, no one else is doing that,
- 38:52I guarantee it. Or at least not.
- 38:53Many. Yeah, that's why.
- 38:55Yeah, that was. You guys also do something
- 38:57really unique. It started I think a few years
- 39:00ago, helping kids help kids. I want to talk a little bit
- 39:03about that because I think it's a unique balance between
- 39:05genuinely making an impact on kids, the community, but also it
- 39:09drove business. Yes, yes.
- 39:12Talk a little about that. Well, if you knew more about my
- 39:15personal background, I've, I've been, let's just say, you know,
- 39:17people have helped me for, for a number of reasons that I feel
- 39:21like it's always made me feel like I wanted to give back.
- 39:25I'm a big fan. I don't need to like everything
- 39:28our company does, I do as an individual.
- 39:30I won't walk by anything where they're, I don't care what it
- 39:34is. If they're collecting for
- 39:34anything, I could care less, I'm going to give something to it.
- 39:37I believe in that. I believe in just helping people
- 39:39and I just, I can never figure out, you know, how to
- 39:43incorporate what I do into, into, into giving back.
- 39:48And I just had it was a thought. It was just a thought I had.
- 39:52I'm like, you know, what if I went to a charity and I, I
- 39:57bought this up to one of my biggest clients and I said, Hey,
- 39:59I want you to hear this out. I said, I want to go to a local
- 40:02charity, Boys and Girls Club. Something involves kids.
- 40:04And then I picked the boys and Girls Club, as you know, and as
- 40:06an example, I said, we go down to the boys and Girls Club.
- 40:10Let's have kids. Have a drawing contest.
- 40:13Crayons. Just draw anything that looks
- 40:14like a car. I have a bunch of kids.
- 40:15Have a contest. I want to give the kids awards,
- 40:17plaques, you know, gift cards, you know, give them something
- 40:20good, I said. And I want to take the winning
- 40:23drawing and I want to use it in your car.
- 40:26And in turn, I want you to give a donation to that charity.
- 40:30And the guy I presented it to, he looked at me and goes, I
- 40:34think you're on to something. No, I know I'm on to something.
- 40:37I don't know if I could legally do it.
- 40:39And so I went to the Boys and Girls Club and I met one of the,
- 40:43the director of nine locations and big corporate building.
- 40:47And I told him my idea and he said he goes, you know, he goes,
- 40:51I love it. He goes, I've never heard
- 40:53anything like this before. He said getting the drawings
- 40:56done is easy. Getting those drawings out of
- 40:58the building is where I think we have a problem.
- 41:01And so I spoke to multiple lawyers about this.
- 41:05I ended up paying three different lawyers and it took me
- 41:09about 4 1/2 months to be able to launch Helping Kids Help Kids.
- 41:13It was just the legality of the kids.
- 41:16It was their property and now you were sending out for sales,
- 41:18right? OK.
- 41:20The main thing was is that the kid that draws the picture still
- 41:24has the rights to the picture. So in order to do this and use
- 41:28it for business, I had to take ownership and that was the
- 41:32different, it had to be an assignment agreement.
- 41:34So I can legally take ownership of the picture even though we
- 41:36gave them, you know, something for it.
- 41:39I, that was the only way to now get that legally into, into a
- 41:44direct mail campaign. And you know, I checked with
- 41:47everything I wanted to make sure because after I did my first
- 41:50campaign, which was just absolutely awesome, we raised
- 41:52$10,000 for the Girls Club. That's incredible.
- 41:55Yeah, we had a huge video presentation.
- 41:58We gave the kids the plaques, the awards, the kids grandmother
- 42:01who won second place, a little girl, cute girl and her
- 42:05grandmother came up to me and she's like, I want to thank you
- 42:08so much. She said my my granddaughters
- 42:09always wanted to be an artist. And I'm like, we're changing
- 42:12lives here. This is what that was about.
- 42:15It wasn't, you know, I'm like, yes, it, it generated business
- 42:19and it generated car deals, but it was, it was more than that.
- 42:24It bought the dealership to the community and and got them
- 42:27engaged. And even that the, the, the, the
- 42:30head of the boys and Girls Club, he said, you know, we know who
- 42:32this dealership is. They're one of the biggest
- 42:34players in our area. We've never been able to make a
- 42:37connection. You did that for us.
- 42:39So when I walked out the door after that, they had a
- 42:42relationship. I joined that.
- 42:44So they stayed together and they've given more to this
- 42:47charity since I left. And I go, wow, this was, this
- 42:50was awesome. Like we really, and but I, I got
- 42:54to be honest, I was waiting for where's the pushback?
- 42:57Somebody's going to find the negative.
- 42:59Who's going to tell me that we're exploiting kids, We're
- 43:02pulling heartstrings, you know, and you know, find the negative.
- 43:04And I just said, you know, I said, you know, I wanted to see
- 43:07what happened. And I got to tell you because
- 43:09this is, this is something that never happens in the car
- 43:11business. We got no negative on anything
- 43:15about it, but there was a phone call to one of the dealers, to
- 43:18the dealer that did it and the guy said, hey, listen, he goes,
- 43:22I just want to know. He goes, I just want you to know
- 43:24that I absolutely love my car. So I'm really not interested in
- 43:28trading my car right now. He goes, but I just wanted to
- 43:32thank you for what you did and what you're doing for our
- 43:35community. Wow and I go fan mail that
- 43:38exactly mail never happened. I have the call I.
- 43:41Wow. We started it in 2018, so that
- 43:44was, you know, seven years ago. I have that call of the first
- 43:48time anybody's ever called and thanked them, you know?
- 43:51That never happened, yeah. For and I go, but think about
- 43:54it, just think about that guy wasn't ready to buy a car, but
- 43:57when he is, where do you think he's going?
- 43:59How we do video content, too. And social media, right?
- 44:01It's like you're creating demand.
- 44:02And when this time is right, they're gonna come to you.
- 44:04You built trust and credibility. Authority.
- 44:06Yeah. A. 100% wow, that's incredible,
- 44:09man. You and recently you've gotten
- 44:11more into social, obviously, yes, you're doing this podcast
- 44:14now, you've filmed some videos, you're active on LinkedIn,
- 44:16you've won a few clients through social media, through video,
- 44:19which is amazing. What made you want to get into
- 44:23that? Like because you could have
- 44:24obviously your business is doing well.
- 44:26You've got direct mail, it's still working amazingly.
- 44:28What made you start to think? You know what, maybe I should
- 44:30lean into the video and social stuff a little bit.
- 44:33I it was really just, you know, most they'll tell you, most Rd.
- 44:37salesman have a five year shelf life.
- 44:39That's like, you know what they'll tell you the guy can hit
- 44:41the road hard for five years and he's done.
- 44:43And you know, you got to move them into a different position
- 44:46or move on. And I, this is, you know, 23
- 44:49years coming, you know, two months away from 24 years doing
- 44:52this. And it's like, I just didn't
- 44:54want to, I love the face to face.
- 44:56I still want to do that. I just don't want to knock on
- 44:59doors to get the leads. I don't want to drive around and
- 45:02just go somewhere and just stay in an area just # indoors.
- 45:05And I'm like, I'm, I'm done with that.
- 45:07I've been doing this for so long, but I still love the face
- 45:11to face. So how can I get the interest
- 45:14and then go see them and not have to knock on doors the way I
- 45:18did it completely cold my whole life.
- 45:20That's even before when I did, you know, my company, I did that
- 45:23knocked on doors and I enjoyed that I had I still have the
- 45:26energy now, but I just don't have the desire to cold call and
- 45:29knock on doors all day long. So I wanted to use this as a way
- 45:32to to, you know, to introduce our company, get some people
- 45:36interested in our product. And then I don't care if you're
- 45:38in Wyoming, I'm coming, you know, I'm like.
- 45:40They're like, you're not going to come out here.
- 45:41You're a damn. I'm straight.
- 45:42I am. Alex, I've been doing you.
- 45:44Know you're in Coeur d'Alene Oh. Listen, we've been doing stuff
- 45:47together for for three months now.
- 45:49This is the third time I've been.
- 45:50Here. Yeah, true.
- 45:51Yeah. You're the only client that
- 45:53actually came to see me. Like this is kind of nice.
- 45:55Yeah, absolutely. We got school.
- 45:57Yeah. I wish we could do it tonight.
- 45:59I know. Dang.
- 46:01So I mean, it's like, but that's, that's the part of it.
- 46:03It's not just it's everything about business that, you know, I
- 46:06still love that I just this gets this gets the doors open without
- 46:11me knocking and then I get to do everything else and, and, and
- 46:14keep the love, the, you know, the life that I love right now
- 46:17and the travelling and just now, now I'm going to, you know, to
- 46:21sit down with somebody and talk about it rather than knock on
- 46:23doors, just introduce myself. So that's what started it.
- 46:26That's why you know, I'm, I'm pushing it more because it's
- 46:30working. It's in the last about last I've
- 46:34seen the last 25 days we've put on 4 brand new dealers that I've
- 46:39never done business with before. And they explain how they came
- 46:41to you because this is great for people.
- 46:42Through, through the through LinkedIn, through just, you
- 46:45know, they, they, you know, we, we posted some boosted some
- 46:48stuff and some video content I did with you and just guys just,
- 46:52hey, want to hear more about it. One guy had saw one of the
- 46:55dealers in the video in my in my documentary video.
- 46:59Who's a big dealer everybody knows.
- 47:00Success stories, guys, they work.
- 47:03And, and he's like, Hey, you know, I saw you do business
- 47:06with, with this company and I'm a, you know, I'm a big fan of
- 47:09theirs. You know, I, I, I look up to
- 47:11them, you know, come see me. And he's one of the guys that we
- 47:14booked. And, and then just just from
- 47:16the, from the interest of just, you know, showing.
- 47:19And I got to tell you, there's guys that I haven't even gotten
- 47:21to yet. I'm going to be getting to this
- 47:24is working. It's.
- 47:25Freaking amazing, man. What's cool is like people won't
- 47:27see it, but you know, a few months ago you had a pretty bare
- 47:30LinkedIn profile, weren't doing video content on social lease.
- 47:33And there was even times we were like, I don't know if this is
- 47:35going to work. And then I was like, Rick, trust
- 47:37me, this will definitely work. Yeah, that's cool to see, man.
- 47:41That's really cool. And yeah, I think you got like
- 47:43the best of both worlds. You got the real life out scene,
- 47:46customers, personal human connection, and then you've got,
- 47:49you know, bringing those stories digital and being able to talk
- 47:51about it and reach more people. Yeah, it's cool.
- 47:54For the record, for anybody watching this, I had 10 people
- 47:58following my company and maybe 200 following me.
- 48:01And I just crossed 1400 and that was in, you know, two months and
- 48:05my company's at about 700 and we had nothing so.
- 48:09Let's freaking go. That's why I that's why I asked
- 48:12him. I just just so I could give you
- 48:17I appreciate it. Thank you.
- 48:19It's honestly I said I just you know, I always like, you know, I
- 48:22mean, this is me, right? I want to work face to face and
- 48:25when I the biggest thing that got me to you is when I really
- 48:29liked your videos and I said, man, he gets it and you get that
- 48:33you, you, you cut through all the noise.
- 48:35You're you're you know, you're messing is very clear.
- 48:37A lot of guys just there's just too much noise and you caught me
- 48:41with that. So of course I watched several
- 48:43of your videos and then I went to book a call and it was very
- 48:47simple. I said to my right hand person,
- 48:48I just said here's the deal, If I get to speak to him, done.
- 48:52If I got to speak to somebody else, yeah, I'm not going to do.
- 48:55It yeah. And it was me and it was you.
- 48:56And that was key to me is that I got to speak to you because I go
- 49:00you're, I don't care if I work with your team, right?
- 49:03Once I speak to you, right? You know that.
- 49:04And I'm involved. 100% just like me.
- 49:07I can't always be involved in every aspect, but I'm there.
- 49:10But you know what's going on. And yeah. 100% just like you,
- 49:13you you oversaw just said, Hey, Calista's going to, you know,
- 49:15get your stuff. Dee's going to help you with
- 49:17this. You guys set it all up.
- 49:18We ask them questions, but when I need something from you,
- 49:21you're available now that got me you and that's why I said done
- 49:25this. Is it because I saw what you
- 49:28were doing was how you say it on your own video.
- 49:31Go look at me. Go look at your other people
- 49:33that you know you're competing with and see what they're posted
- 49:35and how they're. And your, your, your numbers are
- 49:38like, yeah, you know, you were, you had your one video.
- 49:42You were like I have $30,000, now you have 45,000.
- 49:45Dollars. I know, right?
- 49:4615,000 K really quick I know so it's like so that's something
- 49:49and I go do I do I really need to even be that?
- 49:52No, not for me because I could never handle that in my
- 49:55business. I still want to you know, I
- 49:56can't never be but for me to to literally in a 2 month period go
- 50:02from non existent to I got pretty crazy 4050 posts up there
- 50:06now with, you know, getting getting people that just every
- 50:09every day or you know following I see it pop up yeah, probably
- 50:12look on my phone right now and see three more people that are
- 50:14following me that weren't following me and I go wow, this
- 50:16is completely working and you. Amazing.
- 50:19You know that's why I'm here. Yeah.
- 50:20Because I believe in you. I believe what you do works.
- 50:23And I appreciate that and. I believe we, we, we look at
- 50:25business the same. Way we do, we do, we do cut
- 50:27through the noise and what's crazy is you've probably done
- 50:29like 1. You put in a lot of work, but in
- 50:32potential wise, one 100th of what you could do, right?
- 50:36So like the skies. I mean, if you really wanted to
- 50:39blow it up, you could. And so, yeah, but you're in a
- 50:41good spot now. And I always tell people, Hey,
- 50:43let's crawl first, then let's walk, then we'll jog and then if
- 50:46we want to run, we can. But that's that's awesome, man.
- 50:49Good to hear one of. The things that that happened
- 50:51with this is I I could see it. I just saw what was happening
- 50:55been doing this a long time and I brought in four people into
- 50:59the company and we weren't in need of all of that now.
- 51:04But you know, and I was kind of questioned why are you kind of,
- 51:07you know, shouldn't we wait until I said, if you can't see
- 51:09that this is coming? No, I said I don't want to wait
- 51:13for it to get here. And then how are we going to
- 51:15train these? That's right.
- 51:16We need to get them in now. Yeah, we'll pay a little bit
- 51:18more upfront, but they need to be ready for.
- 51:20So when this storm hits. Yeah, we're prepared.
- 51:22I remember those. Conversations.
- 51:23Yeah. And the storm is hitting.
- 51:25We're prepared. There it is.
- 51:28Rick. I appreciate you being on the
- 51:29show. Where can people go find you,
- 51:31connect with you, get in touch if they're interested in
- 51:33potentially working with you or know someone that is?
- 51:36And well, you can obviously find me on LinkedIn.
- 51:38Yes you can now. That's yeah, that's or Facebook,
- 51:40LinkedIn and obviously IPI direct.com, which is my website,
- 51:44yeah. You know, link everything.
- 51:45Everything, everything is linked together.
- 51:47We're actually because of you. We're we're, we're, you know,
- 51:51we're doing redoing all that. And we have a lot of actually
- 51:55kind of cool things that are going on there with not gonna
- 51:59say it, but with Wyatt. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:02We have a little a little thing that we're gonna do with Wyatt
- 52:04that I think is gonna be interesting and definitely.
- 52:06And so that's something that we're looking forward to.
- 52:08But we are, we are, you know, we are a little bit slow walking
- 52:12because like I said, right now I'm having a tough time handling
- 52:15what I have. I am, I'm slammed because on top
- 52:17of that, you know, business has been good.
- 52:20My regular business is going and now when I'm just getting, you
- 52:23know, new, you know, new dealers and you know, we have to do the
- 52:25videos and that's a big part of it.
- 52:27And gotta make sure that you have enough time to you don't
- 52:30ever wanna get too big where you're ignoring, you know, a
- 52:33your bread and butter, we got you there and B not getting to
- 52:36people in a timely. Match definitely.
- 52:38I don't want, you know, definitely we're, we're, we're
- 52:40keeping it. I'm almost holding things down a
- 52:42little bit because they are, they are, they are, you know,
- 52:45they're ready to, they're percolating and they're ready to
- 52:47boil over. Yeah.
- 52:49Well, Rick, this is awesome. I appreciate you being on the
- 52:51show and I know we got some more work to do after this.
- 52:54Got it. Thank you for having.
- 52:55Me. Thanks brother, Appreciate it.
