- 3:07now for today's mysterious adventure with Nick Carter. As our story opens, Nick
- 3:13and Patsy, his assistant, are driving home a girl who is not feeling
- 3:15well. Where does she live, Patsy? In the gray Barr apartments?
- 3:21Nick, it's the one with a big lily pool in the court. Oh,
- 3:23that one. She would live in a place like that. I'll show
- 3:27nothing else. Just like Sally, I wish you wouldn't talk that way about
- 3:30her, Nick, she used to be one of my best friends years ago.
- 3:32Well, she's no friend of mine. I have no use for girls
- 3:36to drink the way she does. She's had a lot of trouble recently,
- 3:38Nick, and she just drinks to make herself forget. Her husband divorced her
- 3:43about a year ago just because she went out on a few parties he didn't
- 3:46approve of. She's been alone ever since, Honny. You standing up for
- 3:50her, Patsy. Usually you'd be the first to condemn anyone who plays around
- 3:53the way I understand she does. All right, Nick, think would you
- 3:55like? Just as long as we get her home to her apartment so I
- 3:59can put it a bit, who's going to bed? Evan's young yet,
- 4:03let's go somewhere. The only place you're going, young lady is home to
- 4:08bed. Who's that? I don't know him? Oh? Yes, you
- 4:12do, Sally. That's Nick Carter, the man I work. We've never
- 4:15heard of him. It's the place just ahead, Patsy. Yeah, stop
- 4:18at this first entrance. She lives on this side. Okay, got come
- 4:25on, Sally, this is where you live. I'll get out first and
- 4:28give you a hand. Let out, miscella. Don't need a hand,
- 4:31and take care of myself. I want me to go up with you.
- 4:38No, Nick, you wait here. She'll be all right, all right,
- 4:41But don't let her keep you up there all night. I won't.
- 4:44Oh, I better go after us. You're falling the lily pool if she's
- 4:46not careful. Yeah, she's getting pretty close to the edge of it.
- 4:49Here. Man, he's dead. That's Raley over here by the edge of
- 5:17the pool. Patty formed me that she found a man's body in the pool.
- 5:21John goes. He flash your life this way, Rally? Okay?
- 5:25Oh he small snick look in his back. Yes, a knife right between
- 5:30the shoulder blade. Did you find a buddy, Nick? Not exactly?
- 5:33Does Patsy's girlfriend have found it? Really? What's your name? Sally Reeves?
- 5:39Where is she now? Oh? Patsy's putting in her bed. She
- 5:42lives in this house. She's well slightly under the weather. She happened to
- 5:46find him. Oh, Patsy and I were the small friendly gathering, having
- 5:48a quiet evening, and then she walked in, got well lit up and
- 5:51wrecked the party. Patsy wanted to bring her home, so we did.
- 5:56She went by the pool. She started screaming, I came over here and
- 5:59found on this. Ever, look at him, Nick, that's Arthur Reeves.
- 6:05What that's Sally Reeves? Hate husband? And you say she found him?
- 6:10That's right, very interesting. Maybe she's found him because she knew just
- 6:15where to look for him. And Tenant Riley seems to think Sally did it
- 6:30herself. He's a dope. Well, you said she's hated her husband ever
- 6:33since she divorced her, Patsy, maybe she did kill him. Oh,
- 6:35Nick, Well, she certainly acted guilly enough when they questioned her. That
- 6:39doesn't mean anything, and you know it, maybe maybe not. Well,
- 6:43Riley'll find out. Oh, Nick, you can't leave it to Riley.
- 6:46That's certainly what I'm going to do. This is not a by affair,
- 6:48Nick Carter. You've got to make it your affair. No, Patsy,
- 6:51but I'm not going to see Sally put in jail for something she didn't do.
- 6:55You've got to help her, Nick, and why because I ask you
- 6:58to? That's why. See? Oh Nick, will you do it?
- 7:02I suppose I'll have to if you put it that way. Oh Nick,
- 7:05I knew you would, but it's against my better judgment. I don't care
- 7:09why you do it, just as long as you do it. Now,
- 7:12where do we start? I guess the best thing is to go down and
- 7:14see Rally in the morning, find out just how the case against her stacks
- 7:17up so far, and we'll see where we go from there. Good morning,
- 7:30Nick, and Patsy. Lieutenant, have you let Sally out of jail
- 7:34yet? Let her out? I should say not, Patsy. She's in
- 7:39for good the way it looks now, she did it all right, Raley?
- 7:42Do you mind telling us just what the case is against her so far?
- 7:45No? Mind it talk? Who would you say? Do you on
- 7:47in this name? I'm on the side of the law, just as I
- 7:49always am. You know me well enough of that by now? Well?
- 7:54Here it is. Reeves was Sally's ex husband. He'd divorced her for seeing
- 7:58too much of other guys, and she he hated a party in spite of
- 8:01the five hundred bucks a month alimony he was painted or supposed to be paid.
- 8:05She said he hadn't paid her anything for the last three months. Exactly.
- 8:07You've proven my case for me, Patchy. Now, Reeves's partner tells
- 8:11me that Reeves was having a tough time making both ends meet, and that
- 8:15alone pain is alimony. He's spent too much on his second one. And
- 8:18here's another thing. Reeves just took out a fifty thousand dollars insurance policy in
- 8:22this Sally's favor is that so he had to that was part of the divorce
- 8:28settlement. He should have died before then. Yeah, I know, but
- 8:31that insurance policy is another swell motive for Sally to want Reeves dead. She
- 8:35wouldn't kill anybody. Well, here's another point. Then, she says she
- 8:39got to your party about nine thirty or ten o'clock. The medical examiner says
- 8:45the guy was killed at least by nine o'clock, so she could have killed
- 8:48him and gone to your party for an alibi. Where does she says she
- 8:52was from say, eight o'clock up to the time she got to our party.
- 8:56She says Reeves called her and asked if he could see her about hay
- 8:58thirty. So she said yes and sat in her apartment waiting for him,
- 9:03but he never showed up. So she says, it's a fine alibi.
- 9:07I don't think it's no alibi at all. Who was the last one to
- 9:11see Reeves alive? Oh? His partner, workman. He said, Reeves
- 9:15was at the shop but left to go to see Salry about something amazing.
- 9:18How everything points to Sally. Isn't it all changing me? Isn't Nick?
- 9:22It's natural she did it? She didn't do it, and Nick's going to
- 9:26prove it. Noisy now, Betsy, Well, how's he going to get
- 9:28around the facts? Nick's going to dig up some new facts, Lieutenant,
- 9:31then you'll see how wrong you are. Maybe, but I doubt it.
- 9:35Look, Lieutenant, can I see Sally? Oh? Sure, sure,
- 9:39I guess this'll be all right. Would you like to see her now?
- 9:41If I can? Okay, I'll fix it. You go ahead with your
- 9:43investigation. Nick. I'll go back to the office and wait for you when
- 9:46I'm through here. All right, I'll see you that in a little while.
- 9:50Think I'll go down and have a talk with Reeves partner. First,
- 10:03How, mister workman, you say Reeves was here in the store last night
- 10:07after dinner. He he is, mister Carter. He was chicking, stuck
- 10:09with me. Then he left to see Sally. That was about eight thirty.
- 10:13He said he'd be right back to help me finish checking. Did he
- 10:16say why he wanted to see her? He said he was going to ask
- 10:18and to let him out of some of the alimony he ordered. I see,
- 10:22but he didn't come back. No. I stayed here by myself until
- 10:24about one o'clock. I should judge about the type of furs you carry here,
- 10:30mister workman, that you must do a pretty good business. It's ride,
- 10:31mister Carter. Then how do you account for mister Reeves having such a
- 10:35hard time keeping up his alimony payments? Well, mister Reeves is a heavy
- 10:39spender. He spent money freely himself, and his second wife was extravagant.
- 10:46Did Reeves have any insurance in the partnership, the kind I mean that leaves
- 10:48you any money if he dies? Oh? No, mister Carter. We
- 10:52talked about it but decided it wasn't necessary. Have you and he ever had
- 10:54any trouble, Not the slightest. We've always been the best of friends.
- 11:00Mm hmm. Well, thanks, we in trouble, mister workman. I
- 11:03guess that's all for now. Any time I can help you let me know.
- 11:05Oh, by the way, mind if I use your phone? Not
- 11:09at all. It's on the desk over there. Thanks, that's gonna call
- 11:13my office. I'll be in the back room if you want me. Thank
- 11:16you, Oh passie. How'd you find Sally? She's so mad at Riley
- 11:22but thinking she did it that she hasn't had time to be depressed. How
- 11:26do you make nothing new? That is nothing definite. I'm going to see
- 11:28Reeve's wife. Then I have to drop in on the DA, so I
- 11:31may be tied up the rest of the day, Nick, because Sally wants
- 11:35me to go and stay at her while she's away. She has a cat
- 11:37and a canary and she wants me to take care of them. And I
- 11:41think that's a swell idea. What's a swell about it? Don't you see?
- 11:45He'll give me a chance to go all through a thing. I'll bet
- 11:46you I find something to help prove she's innocent or guilty. Now, Nick,
- 11:50don't be like that. You'll drop over there around eight o'clock tonight.
- 11:54I'll show you what I found okay, see about eight then and Sally's apartment.
- 12:09No wonder Sally couldn't afford a enity of the alimony in this place.
- 12:16Let's go Patsy, Petsy, Patsy, Betsy, where what happened? Patsy?
- 12:24Can you hear me? Yes? What's the matter? Man? He
- 12:31tried to Patsy? Well, what started out to be for naked least?
- 12:48The routine investigation has suddenly taken a strange turn. What's happened to Patsy?
- 12:52And what does this have to do with Nick's attempts to find out who really
- 12:56killed Arthur Reeves? We'll see in just a moment. If you have furniture

- 14:16And now back to our story. We left Nick trying to revive an
- 14:20unconscious Patsy so we could find out what had happened to her and Sally Read's
- 14:24apartment. Feeling better now, Patsy, Yes, Nick, I'm all right,
- 14:28steps the crack of my head. Oh what happened? Can you tell
- 14:33me? I don't quite know? Nick standing here in front of the bedroom
- 14:37mirror, trying on Sally's new first coat. Oh, Nick, isn't it
- 14:41heaven? Yes? Yes, it's certainly a valuable piece of her But what
- 14:45happened, Patsy? Well, as I was trying on the coat, a
- 14:48man came through the door. He's wearing a mask. Told me to take
- 14:50off the coat and give it to him, or he'd kill me. I
- 14:52told him I wouldn't do it. Did he have a gun? Oh?
- 14:56I didn't see one. How do you talk? It's sort of funny,
- 14:58is it? If he were trying to disguise His voice sounded as if he
- 15:01might have had something in his mouth. Probably did. It's an old trick,
- 15:05well, that your best friend wouldn't recognize you. Then what He tried
- 15:09to jerk the coat off me? So I scratched his face for him.
- 15:11Good for you? Not so good, Nick. Look at my fingernails,
- 15:13they're all broken. Oh they'll go in again. Then what happened? We
- 15:18hit me and knocked me down just as you rang the buzzer. Must have
- 15:20gone out the back door you came in the front. Then I must have
- 15:22gone out cold. He was certainly completely out when I found you. What
- 15:26does all this mean? Nick? Where did Sally get this coat? You
- 15:31know? Oh? Yes, her ex hubby gave it to her and set
- 15:33us back alimony to the Odor. He took it out of the stock at
- 15:35the store about two weeks ago and brought it to her. Took it out
- 15:39of the stock at the store. Huh, what does that mean something to
- 15:41you? I don't know, Betsy, but either this coat is tied up
- 15:46with a murder or it's an extraordinary coincidence. How can you find out?
- 15:50You get the history of the coat? First of all, how do you
- 15:52do that? For heaven's sake? I know a man who can tell me.
- 15:54Come on, I'm glad you phoned him in advance. I take to
- 16:07nate all this trip for nothing. Hello, mo, me, how all
- 16:11you come in? Come in? This is pat On, my assistant.
- 16:14Mow Hello, live to see you. And now what is this puzzle you
- 16:19say you got for me? Here's a fur code more have a look at
- 16:22it? By beautiful, Nick? Beautiful? What can you tell me about
- 16:27it? Weird? It is at least four thousand dollars. That isn't what
- 16:33I mean? What can you tell me about the code itself? So everything
- 16:37I could tell you about it, Nick, but I might ab to reap
- 16:41a bout a little here where it sold. Go ahead, I want to
- 16:44know as much as you can tell me. Sure, Nick, Sure,
- 16:48the little of the laning here in my got a few skin together. Now
- 16:56look me seen his little blue mark and the skin here. Yes, that
- 17:03means the coat was sold by fish Pond Brothers, dear mark. The skins
- 17:07were sold together by Herman Shorts who works for them. Nobody else in the
- 17:12business, which is like hermon anything else. When Fishpond Brothers make up the
- 17:17coat, they said it to a retailer. That's all I could tell.
- 17:21Suppose they could tell me anything else about it, you can estim they got
- 17:25a store right on the blog from me, I could telephone them that you
- 17:27are coming and they should take good care of you right away. Thanks.
- 17:33Oh. By the way, that knife there on the counter, is that
- 17:36any particular kind of knife? All for yours who make garments use them?
- 17:41Nick, That is a good knife for training the skins ideo ads. Oh
- 17:47just saw one while ago when I was curious. Come on passing, let's
- 17:49go see Fishburnt Brothers. I'm sorry to keep you waiting, mister Carter,
- 18:04but I wanted to be sure of the facts. This coat was sold by
- 18:07us to Perry Loan in Perry Loan sold the coade to a missus Jackson Moody
- 18:12who lives in Boston, but three months ago she reported it stolen and offered
- 18:17five hundred dollars reward for its return. Five hundred dollars, Oh, Nick,
- 18:21we can flind every ward. We found the code. You found it,
- 18:22Patsy. The reward's yours if you want it. Is that what you
- 18:26wanted to know, mister Carter? Yes, thanks, that's exactly what I
- 18:30wanted to know. Oh, Patsy, call Riley and tell him to meet
- 18:33us at Reeves and Workman's Place. What are we going back there for?
- 18:36I want to see if workmen can add anything to what we already know about
- 18:37this stolen code? Goodbye, Oh, goodbye, mister Carter. I didn't
- 18:52expect to see you again tonight. I just want to ask you a few
- 18:56more questions, if you don't mind, No, no, come in.
- 19:00All of you working pretty late, aren't you? Yes? I am you
- 19:04see without mister Reeves. There's so much more for me to do, pretty
- 19:08dark in here for you to be working, isn't it? Oh? No,
- 19:11I can see plenty well in this life. Well, Lieutenant Riley has
- 19:14to make some notes, same notes, and what Nick? Why? And
- 19:17mister Workman's answers to my questions. Naturally, Sure you won't mind if I
- 19:21turn on another light, will you, mister work Really, mister Carter,
- 19:25his face is scratched right across the cheek. Yes, there was a cat
- 19:30sleeping on a pile of firs a little while ago. I didn't see him,
- 19:33and when I tried to move the furs, he jumped at me and
- 19:36scratched me. What a hell about it? Now? What was it you
- 19:38wanted to ask me? Well, first, mister workman, I'd like your
- 19:41permission to look around your shop a bit, and I'll see here, mister
- 19:45Carter, I don't see what rights you are coming here. It see that
- 19:48mister workman stays where he is. Well, I take a look around the
- 19:51plane. Oh okay, you can't come in here a workman. Nick knows
- 19:55what he's doing, but I don't understand what you're tight. Nick will tell
- 19:59you when he's ready. Wow, this is an interesting baggage. Workman.
- 20:03Address of some firm out in San Francisco needs to be full of pieces of
- 20:07fur coats, some odd neck pieces and other piece of all expensive too.
- 20:15If I'm not mistaken, that's just some pieces I had left over. I
- 20:19don't think so workmen. What do you think they are, Nick? I
- 20:22think workman is a receiver of stolen fur. He cuts them up and ships
- 20:26them to the West coast. His accomplice out there ships his stuff east and
- 20:30they put them together and mix the furs up so they can't be identified.
- 20:33You're crazy. I wouldn't get mixed up in anything like that. Ever see
- 20:37a knife like this one before? Wait, golly, Nick, that's the
- 20:41same kind of knife that killed Reeves. You're quite sure, of course.
- 20:44I am that same dark colored handled, the same two metal bands around it.
- 20:48I know that anywhere that's the same kind of knife. We thought.
- 20:49No, it was a little while ago, said that the handle is different,
- 20:52exactly, Passy, a knife's a regular furrier's knife. But I imagine
- 20:56at some time in the past year mister Workman had new handles put on all
- 21:00his old knives. Right, mister Workman, say, now look here.
- 21:03If you're trying to connect me with Reeves Murdy, you're all wrong. I
- 21:07didn't kill him ever. See this fur coat before? No, and I
- 21:11suppose you weren't the man who tried to take it away from Patsy to night
- 21:14at Sally's apartment. Of course, not what's that about, Nick, You
- 21:17didn't tell me about anybody trying to rob Patsy. Reeves gave Sally a very
- 21:21expensive fur coat out of the stock here at the store instead of paying her
- 21:23some back alimony. But Reeves didn't know it was stolen. And when you
- 21:27arrested Sally, Workman knew he had to get that coat back before you found
- 21:30it, recognized it from the description that's been sent out, and trace it
- 21:33back to him. So we tried to steal it from Patsy to night and
- 21:36Sally's apartment lies all lie Ni came beginning to see what you're leaving up to?
- 21:41Do you, Rally, I'll say I do. Reeves finds out that
- 21:45Workman is dealing his tolen. First, they get into a fight about it.
- 21:48Workman tells Reeves the coat he gave to Sally was stolen. Reeves his
- 21:52sword and starts for Sally's house to get it back. That's where he was
- 21:55headed when he was killed last night. I bet that's it on Riley doing
- 21:59well so far, But when Reeves leaves work when gets scared. He doesn't
- 22:03want Reeves to tell anybody he's selling his tolen first, but the only way
- 22:06he can stop him is to kill him. So he grabs one of his
- 22:08fire knives, beats it up to the apartment house before Reeves gets there,
- 22:12waits for him, and kills him. Why it's as plain as the nose
- 22:15on your face. Oh crazy, all of you. I didn't kill Reeves.
- 22:18Where were you between eight and ten last night? I told you I
- 22:22was here in the store taking stock alone. That ain't no alibi. Come
- 22:26on, work when I'm taking you down to headquarters. We got ways of
- 22:30making fellows that have nothing to say. Talk a lot down there. I
- 22:34was right, Nick, Sally didn't do it. Oh, Nick, you're
- 22:37wonderful. Well, thanks for those few kind words. Patsy Okay, Rally,
- 22:41take him down a headquarters and wait for me there too. Come and
- 22:45Nick, Oh there's one last bit of evidence that a clench this case,
- 22:48Riley, And I think I know right where to put my hand on it.
- 22:49Mate, You in your office in about half an hour. Oh there
- 23:02you are, Nick, glad to see the four of you gathered here to
- 23:04welcome me. Riley, Patsy, Sally and mister Workman. Now let's sit
- 23:11down and be real cozy. What's all this about? Mister Carter. They
- 23:14won't tell me anything except that you've got some use for me. Okni okay,
- 23:18right ahead, will Shelly. It's like this, mister workman, here
- 23:22is the man who killed your ex husband, Narthur Reeve. Oh not it
- 23:27selling stolen furs, your knife, Sally having a fur coat that was tolen,
- 23:32and you're trying to get it back. It all adds up this way
- 23:34till the jury gets it. Then you know I didn't do it. Of
- 23:38course, Well you know it, And I'm apologizing right here and now to
- 23:41booth you and Patsy for being such a dumb idiot as I was. I
- 23:45should have known you wouldn't kill him. It is no wonderful sell it.
- 23:48You're free. And Nick did it. I knew he would. Now I
- 23:51can collect the five hundred dollars reward for recovering the stolen for a coat.
- 23:55Oh it's just super super, Patsy. You collect that money, and I'll
- 23:59collect one hundred thousand dollars on the insurance that also took out for me.
- 24:03I don't think you will, Sally. Mister Carter, why not? Yes?
- 24:07Nick, why can't you get that money? Salem? Yeah, you
- 24:11told me. Reeves never got to your apartment last night. But you didn't
- 24:14see him at all, didn't you. Yeah, Yeah, that's right.
- 24:15I waited and waited, but he didn't come. Really got the things you
- 24:21found in Reeve's pocket? Sure, Nick, Sally. In Reeves's pocket was
- 24:27a bill for women's clothes addressed to you, postmarked the morning of the murder.
- 24:33It must have been delivered to you that afternoon. If you didn't see
- 24:36Reeves, how did that bill get in his pocket? You did see him,
- 24:40didn't you. Yes, he tried to take my firt coat away from
- 24:42me, but I wouldn't let him, and you got into an argument about
- 24:45money, didn't you. He was broken and couldn't give you any so you
- 24:48gave him this bill and said he could at least pay that right well.
- 24:51And by the time he left you you were so mad you could have killed
- 24:52him, weren't you. But I didn't kill him. Workman did. Workman
- 24:56didn't kill him, Sally, you did. After he left, you grabbed
- 24:57up that furrier's knife random on the stairs, rushed over to where he was
- 25:00still standing beside the pool, and puns the knife in his back before he
- 25:03knew you were there. No, No, I never owned a knife.
- 25:06Like that. I couldn't have done it ever. See this picture, Sally,
- 25:10I found it in your apartment a few minutes ago, A flashlight shot
- 25:14of a tea party you had in your apartment they did three months ago.
- 25:18And on the table is one of workmen's fur knives being used as a cheese
- 25:21knife. So you did own a knife like that, all right. I
- 25:25did kill author. I had to have money quick, got out of bills
- 25:29that have to be paid. He wouldn't give me any money. Sure,
- 25:32it was all I could get, so so I killed him where Nick,
- 25:37So she did do it. I was right all the time. I told
- 25:40you I didn't do it. I knew you didn't do it all along,
- 25:42workmen, but I had to do it this way to break down the case
- 25:45against Sally. Sorry you say you knew all along, Knick. Certainly a
- 25:49new workman couldn't have done it, because he'd never chosen such a public place
- 25:52as the court inside a large apartment house at nine o'clock on an early fall
- 25:56evening. There's all I got too much chance of his being seen. He'd
- 26:00have picked him much safer spot. Furthermore, he never would have killed him
- 26:03before I got that stolen coat back from Sally No Riley. Only someone who
- 26:07was so mad they didn't stop to think would kill a man in such a
- 26:10public place. I gotta let workmen go. He was knealing in stolen furs,
- 26:15wasn't he? Why Gully, you're right, Nick, has he that
- 26:18he gets his for that? I will come along you and you too,
- 26:22Sonny reason, I'm gonna put your boat right where you've along. I knew
- 26:26it was your well. I was certainly wrong that time. You certainly were
- 26:36passing completely wrong. She wasn't like that one. I knew her years ago.
- 26:41Times changed, so the people you couldn't know what she's like now.
- 26:45I'm sorry Nick, she I suppose I'll never hear the end of this.
- 26:49You probably won't passy. They don't feel too bad. If it hadn't been
- 26:53for you, we'd never have caught workmen and broken up his racket and stolen
- 26:56furs. And the right person is going to pay for Reeve's murder. Those
- 27:02are the things that really matter always. In just a moment, Nick and

- 28:52got for us? Next week? Nick, can you tell us a little
- 28:53about that? Well, Ken, next week, I'm going to tell you
- 28:56about a murder in a little country town. You and I had gone there
- 29:00for our vacation, but for that one day we got very little vacation.
- 29:04A friend of the sheriff's was shot to death in his home in the early
- 29:07morning, and the sheriff made Nick take over. The sheriff found one big
- 29:11clue that satisfied him, but Nick found a number of small clues that really
- 29:15solved the murder. What do you call a story, Nick, I call
- 29:18it murder in the Night or the mystery of the Milkman's discovery. So long
- 29:22for now, so long everybody, and so long to you Nick and Patsy.
- 29:26We'll be looking forward to seeing you again next week. Next week,
- 29:45at the same time, listen to another curious experience of Nick Catter Master Detective
- 29:48entitled Murder in the Night or Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Milkman's Discovery.
- 30:00Nick Carter Master Detective is a copyright feature of Street and Smith Publications Incorporated.
- 30:07It is presented at the same time and over these same stations by the
- 30:11three great Linux Home Bright News, Linux Clear Gloss, Linux Cream Polish,
- 30:15and Linux Self Polishing Wax, created by ACME, America's great producer of ACME
- 30:21Quality Paints. In the Nick Carter Adventures, Long Clark has starred as Nick.
- 30:25Helen Schote is featured as Patsy. Original music is played by Lou White.
- 30:30The programs are written and directed by Jack McGregor. This is Ken Powell
- 30:33speaking for the thousands of Linux dealers all over America and saying, so long
- 30:38until next week. This is mutual welcome, Mark All. Nick Carr remains,
- 31:00I'm afraid to defy the typical logic of radio detective programs by proving that
- 31:08yes, Patsy's friend did commit the murder, and Lieutenant Riley Billy does seem
- 31:17to be not as competent in these episodes as he was in the first few
- 31:22ones of the series. Here he needs Nick to remind him that his prisoner
- 31:27has been charged with other crimes. Who watches Lieutenant Riley when Nick's out of
- 31:33town? That's what I want to know, all right. Well, now
- 31:37on to Actually I'm going to talk about the last of the Nick Carter films
- 31:45that I saw. It's Phantom Raiders. That's third on the DVD. It
- 31:48was actually second among those released, and the basic plot is that Nick Carter
- 31:56takes up an investigation in all in this nineteen forty movie as he looks into
- 32:05a series of apparent ship sabotages followed up by big insurance claims. Overall,
- 32:14this was a decent movie, but it was probably the weakest one in the
- 32:19series. It felt to me like the entire first ten minutes really could have
- 32:23been cut and it would not have affected the movie at all. So it
- 32:29was padded there and a little rushed at the end. But really there's a
- 32:34lot of suspense and chills, though less violence than in the other two Nick
- 32:37Herder films. It's much less of a who Done it and more just figuring
- 32:43out how Nick Carter is going to manage to capture the bad guys, since
- 32:47we know who they are right from the beginning of the film. Donald may
- 32:52turns in another great performance as Bartholomew, and I have to admit that the
- 32:59character of Bartholomew the Beekeeper was surprised was a surprise because the way he was
- 33:06introduced in the first movie, I really thought this was just going to be
- 33:09one of those comic relief characters that wasn't that funny and was just bumbling into
- 33:16things and somewhat annoying. But no, Actually, Donald Meek's character of Bartholomew
- 33:25is a solid sidekick and pretty competent, if a little bit eccentric. So
- 33:31kudos to the producers on that. This is much more of a comedy,
- 33:37a detective comedy than it is anything that lines up with the traditional Nick Carter
- 33:45stories, and that may be one reason why the film series didn't last more
- 33:51than the three films. Usually Golden Age detective film series tended to run too
- 33:58long. Both in the case of The Thin Man and Mister Moto, two
- 34:06franchises I watched all the way through, I felt like they went one or
- 34:10two movies too far. This one, I think had plenty of life in
- 34:15it, but like a lot of the nineteen thirties, early nineteen forties films.
- 34:21They took a character, Nick Carter, just as Hollywood did films about
- 34:25Nero Wolf and Nancy Drew that really had a very tenuous tie to the source
- 34:30material. The Nick Carter of the pulp books was really a detective's detective with
- 34:38a lot of other operatives working under him, Walter Pigeons. Nick Carter is
- 34:45still a competent detective, but he's a bit of a ladies man, and
- 34:50in this movie is very reluctant to actually go to work. The neck Carter
- 34:53of the radio show, while still revised from any of the early books,
- 34:58is still more in line with the character, and that may have been why
- 35:02it just did not make it beyond the three movies. But it's an interesting
- 35:07film series, and I think we'll definitely offer an opportunity to include that in
- 35:13our upcoming listener support campaign later on this month. All right, well,
- 35:17now that we've talked about a Nick Carter movie, and we'll go ahead and
- 35:22get to some listener comments. And I received a tweet from a listener justin
- 35:27tweets in who do you like Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett is Sherlock? You
- 35:32know that is a very tough question. I've seen all of Jeremy Brett Sherlock
- 35:38Holmes. I've seen all of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movie, and listen
- 35:45to all fifty plus existing Sherlock Holmes radio programs with Brett with Wrathbone, and
- 35:52they're fairly evenly matched. But I would still give the edge to Wrathbone.
- 36:00And in many ways, Brett is probably a bit more traditional, if for
- 36:04no other reason than his characterizations, maybe a bit more aligned with the book
- 36:09bras. I think Wrathbone's homes is a little bit more likable. And I
- 36:15think Wrathbone really had a great ability to make the new Adventures work and it
- 36:24feel right, whereas some of the later actors struggled, which I think was
- 36:30a testimony to the rare talent that he was. And I definitely get people
- 36:35who take the other side of that question. Like I said, it's close,
- 36:38it's fifty two forty eight, But yeah, I'll say Wrathbone for now.
- 36:44All right, Well, that'll do it for today. We'll be back
- 36:46tomorrow with the premiere of Manhunt. Please be sure and send in shows that
- 36:54we haven't played that you'd like to hear us play. A preview episode for
- 37:00and We'll be back next week with another episode of Nick Carter. Send your
