- 0:12Hello friends, It's shown here and it is Thursday.
- 0:15It is the 30th of May and I'm sure you all know that that
- 0:18means it's the International Day of the potato, the humble
- 0:22potato. That's right, that's Samwise
- 0:25Gamgee said. Taters potatoes, boil and fry
- 0:30them, cook them in a Stew. Yes, the humble potato is, is
- 0:34one of the staples for our planet and keeps our race alive.
- 0:39This is the day that we recognise it's actually a
- 0:41significant part of of what feeds people around the world.
- 0:46So if you have got a few potatoes sitting there in a
- 0:48potato box awaiting your retention, today is the day all
- 0:53the things you could do with them.
- 0:54And well, I used to think a potato was a potato.
- 0:57And then we moved to Tasmania and there were all sorts of
- 0:59different potatoes. These ones are best for mashing.
- 1:02These ones are best for baking. These ones are best for
- 1:04roasting. Wow, so many different types.
- 1:08Happy Potato Day to you. But more importantly, today is
- 1:11the day that we're going to be reading the 2nd chapter of
- 1:15Ecclesiastes together, as we listen to the teacher continue
- 1:21grappling with these big questions of life and meaning.
- 1:26So let us sit down with him how open up our heart to the bigger
- 1:31things of the universe and read together Ecclesiastes chapter 2.
- 1:47I said to myself, Come on, let's try pleasure.
- 1:52Let's look for the good things in life.
- 1:54But I found that this too was meaningless.
- 1:58So I said laughter is silly. What good does it do to seek
- 2:02pleasure? After much thought, I decided to
- 2:06cheer myself with wine, and while still seeking wisdom, I
- 2:10clutched at foolishness. In this way, I tried to
- 2:14experience the only happiness most people find during their
- 2:17brief life in this world. I also tried to find meaning by
- 2:22building huge homes for myself and by planting beautiful
- 2:26vineyards. I made gardens and parks,
- 2:29filling them with all kinds of fruit trees.
- 2:33I built reservoirs to collect the water to irrigate my many
- 2:36flourishing Groves. I bought slaves, both men and
- 2:40women, and others were born into my household.
- 2:44I also owned large herds and flocks, more than any of the
- 2:48kings who had lived in Jerusalem before me.
- 2:51I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure of many
- 2:55kings and provinces. I hired wonderful singers, both
- 2:59men and women, and had many beautiful concubines.
- 3:04I had everything a man could desire, so I became greater than
- 3:10all who had lived in Jerusalem before me, and my wisdom never
- 3:15failed me. Anything I wanted I would take.
- 3:19I denied myself no pleasure. I even found great pleasure in
- 3:24hard work, a reward for all my labours.
- 3:28But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to
- 3:31accomplish, it was all so meaningless, like chasing the
- 3:37wind. There was nothing really
- 3:39worthwhile anywhere, so I decided to compare wisdom with
- 3:45foolishness and madness. For who can do this better than
- 3:49I, the King? I thought wisdom is better than
- 3:53foolishness, just as light is better than darkness, for the
- 3:57wise can see where they're going, but fools walk in the
- 4:00dark. Yeah, I saw that the wise and
- 4:04the foolish share the same fate. Both will die.
- 4:08So I said to myself, since I will end up the same as the
- 4:11fool, what's the value of all my wisdom?
- 4:15This is all so meaningless for the wise and the foolish both
- 4:21die. The wives will not be remembered
- 4:24any longer than the fool. In the days to come, both will
- 4:28be forgotten. So I came to hate life because
- 4:33everything done here under the sun is so troubling.
- 4:37Everything is meaningless, like chasing the wind.
- 4:42I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave
- 4:46to others everything I have earned.
- 4:49And who can tell whether my successor will be wise or
- 4:52foolish? Yet they will control everything
- 4:55I have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun.
- 5:00How meaningless. So I gave up in despair,
- 5:05questioning the value of all my hard work.
- 5:07In this world. Some people work wisely, with
- 5:12knowledge and skill, then must leave the fruit of their efforts
- 5:16to someone who hasn't worked for it.
- 5:18This, too, is meaningless. A great tragedy.
- 5:22So what do people get in this life?
- 5:25For all their hard work and anxiety, their days of labour
- 5:29are filled with pain and grief. Even at night, their minds
- 5:32cannot rest. It is all meaningless, so I
- 5:38decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and
- 5:43to find satisfaction in work. Then I realised that these
- 5:48pleasures are from the hand of God, for who can eat or enjoy
- 5:53anything apart from Him? God gives wisdom, knowledge, and
- 5:57joy to those who please Him. But if a Sinner becomes wealthy,
- 6:02God takes the wealth away and gives it to those who please
- 6:06Him. This too, is meaningless, like
- 6:10chasing the wind. Lord, we are ambitious little
- 6:24ants, aren't we? Scurrying around in our days
- 6:29filled with ambition to build and to achieve and to accumulate
- 6:34and to gain. But here, the teacher says there
- 6:41is no point in that but to find joy in you and your gifts to us,
- 6:48day by day, moment by moment. This is wisdom.
- 6:54This is where meaning lies. Lord, help us bring our
- 7:01attention and our life force back to the here and the now in
- 7:08the sure knowledge that we are your people and we live beneath
- 7:13your great sovereignty. And as we find our place, living
- 7:18at the foot of Your throne, enjoying the gifts that you give
- 7:22us, may that be where we find joy in You and all that you've
- 7:29enabled us to do today for those around us.
- 7:36Thank you for these gifts and for the greatest gift of all,
- 7:40who is Jesus, who restores us to you?
- 7:43And it's in His name that we pray.
- 7:45Amen.
