- 0:01Plato, in the famous dialogues recounting the teaching of his
- 0:05mentor Socrates, recounts the understanding that Socrates held
- 0:10that education was simply a recognition by the individual of
- 0:15what he already knows. The process of education one was
- 0:19one of drawing out, removing the obstacles to the expression of
- 0:24the knowledge and not a matter of stuffing in that we consider
- 0:29to be education in today's world.
- 0:32The Latin language root of the term education literally means
- 0:36to draw out or to lead out, thus emphasizing the Socratic view.
- 0:43There are powers within each individual of which he may not
- 0:46be aware until they are brought to his attention, focused on,
- 0:51and developed. Similarly, some latent powers
- 0:55may simply need exercise and practice to blossom into their
- 0:59full potentiality. Human development is not
- 1:03uniform. Individuals grow, mature, and
- 1:07develop their powers within their own time frame and
- 1:10circumstances. Latent capacity sometimes
- 1:14manifested various stages of life and in some cases arise
- 1:19under pressure of situations and in response to some inner or
- 1:24outer crisis in the life. Thus, someone who shows no sign
- 1:29of any scientific, artistic, mathematical, spiritual, or
- 1:35other powers of consciousness may suddenly blossom in a
- 1:39particular direction that in many cases was unforeseen and
- 1:44unexpected. In some cases, a spiritual
- 1:48experience of some kind opens the doors to new powers, which
- 1:52can then be cultivated and developed.
- 1:56We already know that the human range of perception is limited
- 2:00within a specific scale of the electromagnetic spectrum, such
- 2:04that there are sounds both below and above our current range, as
- 2:09well as ranges of sight that are outside our range.
- 2:13For each of the senses, we have a corresponding limitation of
- 2:17our range, which in some cases animals may experience.
- 2:22Dogs, for instance, have potential for the sense of smell
- 2:26and hearing that are beyond our range.
- 2:29Bees see things in a range outside ours as well.
- 2:34Consciousness is a continuum and is not artificially limited by
- 2:39our sensory limitations or our limitations of physical, vital
- 2:45or mental formations or processes.
- 2:48Thus, any expansion we make in our ability to tune to, perceive
- 2:55and receive consciousness from outside the current limited
- 2:58range represents an opportunity for a newly discovered occult
- 3:03power to work in US and manifest in our lives.
- 3:08Sri Aurobindo notes quote Consciousness in its very nature
- 3:14could not be limited by the ordinary physical human, animal
- 3:17consciousness. It must have other ranges.
- 3:22Yogic or occult powers are no more supernatural or incredible
- 3:26than is supernatural or incredible.
- 3:29The power to write a great poem or compose great music.
- 3:33Few people can do it as things are not even one in a million.
- 3:39For poetry and music come from the inner being and to write or
- 3:43to compose true and great things, one has to have the
- 3:47passage clear between the outer mind and something in the inner
- 3:51being. That is why you got the poetic
- 3:54power as soon as you began yoga. Yogic force made the passage
- 3:59clear. It is the same with yogic
- 4:02consciousness and its powers. The thing is to get the passage
- 4:06clear, for they are already within you.
- 4:10Of course the first thing is to believe, aspire, and with the
- 4:17true urge within, make the endeavour end.
