Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Cubs fall as offense sputters, Vikings & JJ McCarthy questions with Dane Mizutani & the Voice of the Chiefs Mitch Holthus
Transcript
- 0:10All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:13a Tuesday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:16Frank Condon, Ken Miller with you for the next couple of hours
- 0:19to talk sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:21afternoon with us. Now, here's what's coming up on
- 0:24our program. We will head north to the Twin
- 0:27Cities. Dan Mazatani, the beat writer
- 0:29for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, covers the Vikings.
- 0:32We will get Dane and obviously question numero one, maybe two
- 0:37and three as well, the quarterback JJ McCarthy and how
- 0:40he's looking and what it means and what may happen this weekend
- 0:44as far as JJ McCarthy and some of the starters seeing the
- 0:47field. Because I heard O'Connell say
- 0:49that after this week, doesn't sound as though they're going to
- 0:52see any more playing time. Subject to change is what he
- 0:54said. But Dane Mazatani was part of
- 0:56that press conference and he's been in practice every single
- 0:59day. So the latest on the Vikings
- 1:01with Dane at 12:30-ish. Then Mitch Holtis, chief daily
- 1:05training camp reports. Papa John's or state of Iowa,
- 1:08they sponsor those. Xavier Worthy, the focus of
- 1:11today's conversation with Mitch, I look forward to that at 12:45
- 1:16and at 1:00 from Pro Football Focus.
- 1:19So it's a football heavy day today NFL wise.
- 1:22Dalton Wasserman has been with us a couple of times.
- 1:24He will join us. General NFL questions for for
- 1:27Dalton coming up here at 1:00 and that will bring the guest
- 1:32list on a Tuesday to an end. Trent, we'll have some plays of
- 1:35the day, circus sports sponsor those.
- 1:37They'll get to those about to 150 or thereabouts before we
- 1:40turn it over to Lucas. And I think he said David
- 1:42Eicholt is with him today. So that's what's coming up at
- 1:462:00. But we recap what happened
- 1:49yesterday in sports. Not a good day for the Cubs in a
- 1:52lot of areas. Dansby Swanson not being able to
- 1:57touch to tap the bag. Yes.
- 2:00You know what? He's getting killed for it, and
- 2:02I'm going to cut him some slack. Well.
- 2:04Without him they don't even have a run that's.
- 2:05True, because he hit the two run home run in the game.
- 2:07He did commit an error in the field, which doesn't happen very
- 2:10often. But the guy's hustling his ass
- 2:12off down to first base and didn't have his steps right and
- 2:15he tried to reach with that foot to tap the bag.
- 2:17He knew it was going to be close and if he did, and that's what
- 2:20it was called, the beginning with the tying run, rather was
- 2:23going to score, but in the end it didn't.
- 2:25And the Cubs fall again. Their their offense is just, I
- 2:28mean, I, I think Saya Suzuki is 6 for his last 50.
- 2:33Kyle Tucker, Not much better. No, not at all.
- 2:35PCA in a horrific slump. And he looked lost, lost.
- 2:40And that pinch hit the he let one go by that he didn't think
- 2:44was a strike. I mean, that was sadly in the
- 2:47box that he loved so much. I do.
- 2:48Love the box? And the two swings he had, yeah,
- 2:51were just brutal. I mean, awful.
- 2:53No shot. Kyle Tucker doesn't look real
- 2:57confident. No what?
- 2:57And if he does get a hit, if the if the bat finds a way to hit
- 3:00the ball. I think he's closing his eyes to
- 3:03begin with, but it's a single at best.
- 3:05That's just the way he's been lately.
- 3:07Need more from him. The offense is anemic right now
- 3:10and worse, to make matters worse, their trade deadline
- 3:15acquisition, Soraka, He's already out two innings and he's
- 3:20done. His velocity's going down in his
- 3:24last few starts with the Nationals.
- 3:27And for whatever reason, Jed Hoyer thinks that that should be
- 3:30their target. That's the guy they should go
- 3:33after. They bought damaged goods,
- 3:36damaged goods, and there's nothing they can do about it.
- 3:39The Nationals, They must have been.
- 3:41Are you seriously want this guy? His velocity interrupted 3
- 3:45consecutive starts. Back-to-back to back starts.
- 3:47If that's not a red flag, I don't know what is.
- 3:50He was good in the first inning, struck out this, you know, there
- 3:52was a hit in there, but did 3 strikeouts in the first inning,
- 3:55got through the 2nd and then that's it.
- 3:57And now he's shut down and it was no, well, we'll check him
- 4:00out in the morning. We'll see how he is in the
- 4:01morning. Boom, no, instantly he's on the
- 4:03ili. Don't know what it means,
- 4:05Certainly not good news. We will see.
- 4:09Brown comes in and it was really good.
- 4:11He was excellent. He was really good last night.
- 4:13He did not deserve the faith that was handed to him.
- 4:15You know, Deshea's talked about that a little bit, though, and
- 4:18he was mentioning that sometimes for a guy that has been
- 4:21struggling and though just last time, yeah.
- 4:23Just don't have the day to. Think about it.
- 4:26Marinate on your start. Going through the scout report
- 4:29at the same level, you're looking at the scout report
- 4:31because you know you're the long reliever and that means you're
- 4:33going to go in at any time. So you're always looking at it,
- 4:35but it's that time where you're just go.
- 4:37And Deshays was kind of that guy, right?
- 4:39Yeah. He had some high watermarks, but
- 4:41he was a long reliever. He was a fist starter.
- 4:43He was a filling guy at times in his career, and he understands
- 4:46that role. And for a guy like Brown, just
- 4:48go out there and use your because it's not a stuff
- 4:50problem. He's got to develop more.
- 4:52But when you're just talking about raw stuff, that's not the
- 4:55issue with Brown. He was really good last night.
- 4:58Trent, I'm with you. He was really good.
- 5:00We'll see here. Here's the, I guess if there is
- 5:03a silver lining, the Cubs and the Brewers play five times next
- 5:06week, 2 on Monday, then Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
- 5:10Is that 5. That's 55 games next week
- 5:14against each other. Double header makeup game from
- 5:16way back early in the season on Monday and and then obviously
- 5:20the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday games.
- 5:22So at this point, the Brewers seemingly, you're never going to
- 5:25lose. They just keep finding ways to
- 5:27win. It is unbelievable that where
- 5:29they're playing right now. I can't go as far as to say the
- 5:34division is lost, but come talk to me next Friday.
- 5:38You're. Jumping ahead though, that's not
- 5:40till the 18th. I thought it was next week.
- 5:42No, it's not till the 18th that the five gamer starts, because
- 5:45before that, yes, we got weekend series coming up against the
- 5:49Cardinals. Then your Blue Jays come to
- 5:51town. Are you going to?
- 5:53No, no, actually it's in Toronto.
- 5:54So let's see. After that, two weeks, two
- 5:59weeks, the Pirates. Then it's the Brewer series.
- 6:02So give me give me the schedule between when the when the Reds
- 6:06leave. So at Saint Louis this weekend,
- 6:09OK, off day Monday, then they go to Toronto for three.
- 6:13Yeah, home for the. Pirates and then back.
- 6:16To Cubville and then it will be the five gamer with the Brewers.
- 6:21OK, town. OK.
- 6:23Well, it's coming. It's.
- 6:25Getting there now. In the interim, the Brewers will
- 6:28wrap up here against the Braves. Then they get the Mets.
- 6:32It's a big series. Big.
- 6:33Series again. Yeah, Mets blew another one
- 6:35yesterday. Came back from A5 zip deficit to
- 6:37tie the game only to blow it. Pirates at home at the Reds
- 6:42before the five gamer Oh yeah the Brewers at this pace,
- 6:44they're gonna be 10 games up they.
- 6:45Could be. They could be.
- 6:47Oh boy. How how does this team do this
- 6:51all of a sudden though with? The Brewers, I don't know,
- 6:53Trent, they're they're, they're confounding to me.
- 6:55You know who they are. They're the National League
- 6:57version of the Tampa race, the Bay Race.
- 6:59They just are. How would they do it?
- 7:01It's it's smoke and mirrors. It's a really good manager and
- 7:04both of them have really good managers.
- 7:07But since Woodruff's been back, this team, they they found their
- 7:11pitcher. They're just good.
- 7:14Cheerio's hurt. Yeah, he is, isn't he?
- 7:15He's on the IL. And they, it sounds like he's
- 7:17gonna be OK, but was it hamstring injury or something
- 7:21like that? And it's gonna, I mean, he's a
- 7:23stud. Yeah.
- 7:24But you know, Frehlich's been up and down.
- 7:26Hoskins has had a a bounce back type of season.
- 7:29They're not gonna get this out of Andrew Vaughn, though.
- 7:31Right. Well, aren't they?
- 7:33No, they this can't. How bad does this make the White
- 7:35Sox look? This was the third overall pick.
- 7:40Already surpassed what he did all season long with the White.
- 7:42Rushman went one. Bobby Wood junior went 2.
- 7:45Andrew Vaughn went 3. White Sox got the pick right,
- 7:48but then they couldn't develop them.
- 7:50Brewer spent a week on them, fixed them.
- 7:53Like what we got here? Look what we got here indeed.
- 7:56So we'll see tonight, obviously, Game 2 of this Red Series, the
- 8:00Brewers again, they'll never lose.
- 8:02They take on, they stay in, I think.
- 8:04Where are they? Washington for this one here
- 8:06tonight. Good stuff.
- 8:07Speaking of another never losing 5 run first inning from the Sox
- 8:10last night, The Red Sox, they hold off and a late charge from
- 8:15you said it yesterday and I guess maybe I was still on
- 8:18vacation mode. Yeah, the Red Sox can win this
- 8:21division. They can win the division.
- 8:22They can win this division. Now the good news for I mean as
- 8:25far as watching the scoreboard, this Toronto is in Colorado.
- 8:29So as as bad as I felt after watching the Cub piss win that
- 8:31way, I I made myself feel markedly better because that
- 8:35flipped over the X to the Expos to the Blue Jays and the
- 8:38Rockies. And what was the final score?
- 8:4015 to one or something? I think I turned it to flip.
- 8:43The channel was 14 to 1. I felt pretty good and got my
- 8:46spirits back up a little bit. 25 hits.
- 8:49You know, I think. It might be a team record 25
- 8:51hits. If it's not, it's got to be
- 8:52close and the Rockies are just so bad.
- 8:55How would you like to call the Rockies games?
- 8:57How would you like to be? Well, it'd be great 'cause I'd
- 9:00still be, I mean. You're made.
- 9:02Yeah, you're 1 of 30. Yeah, you're 1 of 3230.
- 9:04Thirty. Yeah, you've got one of the 30
- 9:08gigs. But I might be polishing up my
- 9:09resume a little bit and seeing if I can find another and my guy
- 9:12that's. Done.
- 9:12It's been there forever. It's drew something.
- 9:15Drew some I don't even know off the top of well.
- 9:18He was, he was breaking into sports when I lived there in the
- 9:21early 90s. I don't think he don't think he
- 9:23was the Rockies announcer at the time.
- 9:25No, he wasn't because Charlie Jones was.
- 9:27Remember Charlie Jones? Oh, absolutely.
- 9:29Long time broadcaster. He was the voice, first TV voice
- 9:33of, of the Rockies. Drew.
- 9:39Doesn't matter. Drew Goodman.
- 9:41Drew Goodman. There you go.
- 9:42Goody. Yeah.
- 9:43How long has he been doing it? This is his. 24th year full time
- 9:46for 10 years. He was the broadcaster for the
- 9:49Nuggets from 94 to O four and has also done a few other
- 9:54things. He was part of the pregame show
- 9:56filled in for the Rockies before filling in in the full time role
- 9:59now for the last 24 years. Good stuff.
- 10:02So I listened to him last night, but but point being is, is how
- 10:05do you get excited to go to work for that?
- 10:07It's just so God awful. Call him Major League Baseball.
- 10:10I know, I guess you're sitting in you're sitting in Major
- 10:12League balls, press box calling Major League Baseball.
- 10:15So there's there's something to be said for that.
- 10:17All right, coming up on the show, a lot of NFL talk today.
- 10:19Let's start with JJ McCarthy, all right?
- 10:22Because right, back to the well, here we go.
- 10:24I just. There's so many conflicting
- 10:28things, so there's a piece out on did you read the piece Ben
- 10:31Hawkes or Fox? Ben Fox from Yahoo Sports.
- 10:34He's a Minnesota native and a Viking fan.
- 10:37I did. Not know.
- 10:37That long time ESPN gambling bet their what are their gambling?
- 10:42Writers for a long contact information for this cat I.
- 10:45Might. Actually.
- 10:46So he came up with a, A what each starting quarterback is
- 10:52worth in comparison to their backup.
- 10:54So if Josh Allen goes out and Mitch Trubisky has to come into
- 10:59the game or start a game, it's just a tick under 7 points.
- 11:03So if the point spread was going to be Bill's favored by 10 and
- 11:07it's Miss Trubisky that's going to start, the point spread would
- 11:10reflect that they're favored by three.
- 11:12So that's where I'm going here. But then they asked, and this is
- 11:15according to a variety of odds makers.
- 11:18None of them were willing to go on record with their name, but
- 11:21they were willing to go on record with how they power rank
- 11:24the starting quarterbacks in the NFL.
- 11:26So you get to AI got to a section on JJ McCarthy last
- 11:31night and one of the odds makers is he's flat out calling him a
- 11:36bust. Flat out calling him a bust.
- 11:38But two paragraphs down to paragraphs down, there's a
- 11:42there's a cat that is is willing to die on that hill when it
- 11:45comes to JJ McCarthy. And it's all part and parcel of
- 11:51Kevin O'Connell. Here's here's the quote.
- 11:54I think McCarthy's going to be really good, really good in this
- 11:57offense with the weapons that he has all over the place.
- 12:00You've seen KOC, what he's done the last few season with Sam
- 12:03Darnold and with Josh Dobbs. Here's the first quote.
- 12:06Until he plays, I don't know how I can rate him any better than
- 12:09Sam Howe. I wouldn't be surprised if he's
- 12:11a bust. Time will tell.
- 12:14Everybody's. He's all over the place with
- 12:15this guy. What do you think Dave Muzatani
- 12:17is going to tell us? Up and down.
- 12:20Some good, some bad, inconsistent.
- 12:22Kind of what you're hearing from Caleb Williams.
- 12:24Yes, absolutely. It's I think a very similar
- 12:27conversation that we're having with both second year
- 12:29quarterbacks. It was a red shirt year because
- 12:31of the injury, but it was also behind in the development.
- 12:34The one we've had this argument now, I mean, going way back to
- 12:37the spring, we've been on opposite sides of this one.
- 12:41And the trump card that you've thrown out to me so many times,
- 12:44KOC is KOC, Josh Dobbs, Nick Mullins, Shawn Mannion, Jaron
- 12:51Hall looked at least for 1/2. He did.
- 12:53Look, I forgot all about him. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:56Yeah, yeah. It's not just Kirk Cousins.
- 12:58It's not even Sam Darnold. I think is because we saw those
- 13:01glimpses in San Francisco the year before and Shanahan made
- 13:04the call, like, what are you doing?
- 13:05Like this guy's here and he's, he can help you.
- 13:07And he absolutely did. It's not those guys.
- 13:10It is the Dobbs, the Mullins, the Halls of the world, the
- 13:14career number threes that. Now.
- 13:17Here's the other part though. We saw all those guys coming.
- 13:21Around. No, I'm not OK.
- 13:23I'm not. I'm not there.
- 13:25But that's what I don't have a comeback for because I can't.
- 13:28I can't look, we don't do hot take radio.
- 13:31That's that's not what we are. We believe what we say and when
- 13:36you come back with that, I can't come up with a argument that I
- 13:39actually believe in to say no, you're wrong because when you
- 13:43say KOC, you're right. With all those guys, though,
- 13:47they were short glimpses and then reality set.
- 13:51And though the glimpse was much longer last year with Sam
- 13:53Darnold, the last two games, sure.
- 13:55Yeah. Maybe reality started to set in
- 13:58so. It took a while before it
- 14:00finally hit. Again, coming to come a full
- 14:03circle here, this is as good of an argument I can make against
- 14:06your, but KOC is, yes, he's taken all kinds of different
- 14:11quarterbacks and been able to be a.
- 14:13Chicken salad out of chicken. You know what?
- 14:15Yes, but not long term. Darnold was the longest term,
- 14:19but then we also saw you got pressure in his face 2.
- 14:21Weeks, Week 17 and then the. And then it fell.
- 14:24Yeah, and then it fell apart. But still 14 and three.
- 14:27That's incredible, right? Absolutely incredible.
- 14:31I think, put it this way, JJ McCarthy's floor might be higher
- 14:37that I don't see a train wreck. This isn't going to be that he,
- 14:41this is not Ryan Leaf's rookie year.
- 14:42What what, 2 touchdowns, 20 interceptions, whatever it was,
- 14:45that's not what we're looking at here.
- 14:47The seat, the floor is going to be raised because of KOC.
- 14:52But is it more than just that, that he's going to make him
- 14:55competent, but that's all you're going to get that there is?
- 14:59I guess, I guess that's still to come, right?
- 15:02That that's that's the one chapter.
- 15:03We just don't know. I like you.
- 15:06You gotta love his receivers. The roster might be as good as
- 15:09any roster in the NFL. With the they fix the interior
- 15:12of the offense A. Major way, major way they fix
- 15:15the both sides of the of the ball they they fix.
- 15:18Defensively, they finally got dudes over there.
- 15:20I mean, they were doing it with Scotch tape and now you look
- 15:23across and you see a roster and a defensive roster.
- 15:26That I really like. Absolutely.
- 15:29McCarthy, McCarthy, McCarthy, you know what the piece that I'm
- 15:33also concerned a little bit about Aaron Jones.
- 15:36How much has he got left? I mean, he's, he's, he's crossed
- 15:39the threshold, right? He's now in his 30s.
- 15:43There's a lot of folks that play fantasy sports that love the
- 15:46backup Jordan Mason. He's the guy that's going to be
- 15:48there. But when you look at the weapons
- 15:50with Jefferson and Addison, whoever the number 3 is going to
- 15:54be, whether it's Naylor and Hawkinson, you mentioned the two
- 15:57pieces. They've 3 actually, because the
- 15:59first round pick is the left guard, Donovan Jackson and Ryan
- 16:03Kelly at center and the right guard will freeze and then they
- 16:05bring in Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave.
- 16:09That's two really good additions.
- 16:11Granard was unbelievable last year.
- 16:13Kerson Phillips is a a run clogger, a run stuffer.
- 16:18That's what his job's going to be.
- 16:19The linebackers run around and make plays.
- 16:21Pace and Cashman and Van Ginkel. This team's loaded, except we
- 16:27don't know what, And Christian Darasaw's back, who missed
- 16:31significant time at left tackle last year.
- 16:33And. They're loaded, changed what
- 16:35they had to do. They went out and got the guy
- 16:36from Jacksonville. Yeah, Who was a bust?
- 16:38Yeah, he was. He was OK, but he's at the end
- 16:40of his career, right? I can't even think of his name.
- 16:42They needed to have him. Yeah.
- 16:44Charles, something I don't. Charles Robinson.
- 16:45No, that's not right. Regardless.
- 16:47So last year. Now let's take you back.
- 16:50You're number one at KOC. Thrust down to the scene.
- 16:52They go 13 and 4. They're 11 and O in one score
- 16:56games. Then 2023 they take a step back.
- 17:00Guess what their record was in 14-1 score games in 2023?
- 17:05What was it? 6:00 and 8:00.
- 17:07What goes around comes around those.
- 17:08So we go back to now last season, the Minnesota Vikings a
- 17:12year ago had a nine and one record in one score games.
- 17:17That's all it takes from going from 14 and 3 to 9 and 8 is just
- 17:22and. It's very margin of error is
- 17:24very thin. It's the NFL and the
- 17:27sustainability of 1 score wins. It's not there.
- 17:31You can have the greatest coaching staff and you can have
- 17:33a great question. And they do.
- 17:35I mean, Flores is elite but. This just always comes back to
- 17:39the mean and when you look at that and suddenly and you're
- 17:42under 501 score games this year, they're 8-9, you're 9 at 8.
- 17:48They're nothing really changes that much in it.
- 17:51AOC was the same guy in 2023 that he wasn't 22 and 24.
- 17:56The only thing the. Outcome didn't go their way.
- 17:58Is the one score variance didn't go their way that season?
- 18:02There's my trump card. That's a pretty good one.
- 18:04Yeah, pretty good one. I mean, you've got the history.
- 18:06It's it's there, right in there in black and white, right in
- 18:09front of you. Interesting.
- 18:10Well, Dane Mazatani, we'll get to him on the other side.
- 18:13Look forward to catching up with Dane.
- 18:14Just real quick on this before we go to break.
- 18:16I don't want to spend a ton of time, but I do want to spend a
- 18:18minute on it. The I'm trying to.
- 18:22I'm just absorbing all I can. I've read more love for the
- 18:26Kansas Jayhawks football program in this last three or four days.
- 18:30Is it an algorithm that keeps feeding me these positive
- 18:33Jayhawks football stories? I think it's like what I talked
- 18:36about yesterday with the Bears. It's the first thing I thought
- 18:38of is the algorithm. You clicked on one thing,
- 18:41There's seven or no once they leave Lubbock on the 11th of
- 18:44October, No, they're not the Kansas Jayhawk.
- 18:47That's what I'm saying. And here's the thing, I I will
- 18:50admit this, they've got the most beneficial first three games to
- 18:55open up the Big 12 that you could, you could ever wish for,
- 18:58right? The three bottom feeders are
- 19:00Bing Bang Boom, home to West Virginia, home to Cincinnati at
- 19:03UCF. It's pretty good, Trent.
- 19:05They're not beating. Missouri at Missouri.
- 19:07Missouri's going to be good. Good.
- 19:11Good or less good? Last year, good nine and three.
- 19:14Eight and four Good. All right in the SEC.
- 19:18But that doesn't matter when I told you but.
- 19:20They're not going to be 7 and O after they leave Lubbock
- 19:22because. That's a one I think they'd all
- 19:24sign for that though. But can they be?
- 19:26They're not going to be Texas Tech.
- 19:27They want that's in it's in Lubbock.
- 19:30In Lubbock, Yeah, they're Fresno State, Wagner at Mizzou, home to
- 19:35West Virginia, home to Cincy at UCF.
- 19:37This damn algorithms. How do I snap this?
- 19:40You just got to go away from the 4U page.
- 19:42Is that thing? It ruins us, doesn't it?
- 19:44It really does. I I I click on one Kansas Big 12
- 19:48article and I'm inundated with this positive stuff.
- 19:51Well, we'll have a couple of former locals that'll be
- 19:54involved with The Jayhawks, LA Shawn Williams, Yeah, gonna be
- 19:57the starting running back, and Deshawn Hanneke, the D stand,
- 20:01yes. He was in the gambling.
- 20:03He was not. Yeah, that's right.
- 20:05And he played last year, didn't he?
- 20:07I think so. I mean, let me look.
- 20:10Let me look. I thought he might, you know?
- 20:11Let's look. Hanukkah, Hannah.
- 20:14He was at Community College I believe last year.
- 20:16Was he Butler Community? College.
- 20:19Well, we'll take your time out enough.
- 20:20Kansas. You're not buying it.
- 20:23I'm. Not buying it, I think they're
- 20:24going to be good. Fix your algorithm over there
- 20:26you. Have to Miller and Condon Dame
- 20:28Mazatani next. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 20:31Network. Hi, coming up on 1230.
- 20:36Welcome back Miller in Condon. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 20:39Mitch Holtis, voice of the Kansas City Chiefs daily Chiefs
- 20:42training camp reports coming up in about all 15 minutes or
- 20:45thereabouts. Let's head north.
- 20:47Before we head South. Dane Mazatani covers the Vikings
- 20:51for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, twincities.com and Dane
- 20:54is with us. Dane Trenton, Ken, good to speak
- 20:57with you. It's been a fun watch on Twitter
- 21:00and watching all the training camp and all the opinions.
- 21:03So here's my take, Dane. See if you kind of see it the
- 21:05same way. JJ McCarthy is either going to
- 21:09be a first ballot hall of farmers or he's going to be
- 21:11selling medical supplies in two years.
- 21:14That's where we're at with this guy.
- 21:16What have you seen with your own two eyes?
- 21:18Dane, welcome to the show. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 21:23With training camp, we we tend to speak in declaratives and
- 21:26man, social media can in on you one second and out on you the
- 21:30next. Here's where I'm at with JJ
- 21:32McCarthy. He's learning and it makes
- 21:35sense. It's been up at times, down at
- 21:38times, but I don't sit there and have any true concerns about his
- 21:44ability to one play the position to run the offense.
- 21:49It's looked crisp enough for me now.
- 21:52There have been times where he looks like a 22 year old going
- 21:56up against a defense run by a defensive mastermind.
- 22:00I think part of the struggles in training camp can simply be
- 22:04chalked up to Brian Flores runs an extremely exotic defensive
- 22:10look that is a little bit abnormal, not even just a little
- 22:15bit completely abnormal to that of anything JJ McCarthy has seen
- 22:18in his football life. It's hard to practice against
- 22:21something like that, but it is making him better.
- 22:24So I think anytime we've seen the struggles, a lot of it has
- 22:28coincided with the defense looks really good.
- 22:31How do you judge whether it's the offense struggling or the
- 22:34defense dominating? It's probably somewhere in the
- 22:36middle. So the arm talent is there.
- 22:39I think he needs to work on his touch, but I'm not concerned
- 22:43about David McCarthy. If what would it take for you,
- 22:47though, to be so concerned that you said even the start of the
- 22:51year, maybe they need to start looking at Sam Howell?
- 22:53I mean, how bad does it have to get, not just for you, but for
- 22:56the organization as a whole? Is that even on the table or
- 23:00would it have to take something, I mean, cataclysmic?
- 23:02He goes 8 of 42 with six interceptions in his preseason
- 23:06games. I mean, something like that.
- 23:07How bad does it have to get? He he could throw an
- 23:11interception every single time he dropped back to pass for the
- 23:13rest of training camp and they wouldn't go to Sam Howell
- 23:16because Sam Howell has looked even more lost than JJ McCarthy
- 23:22and and pretty pretty markedly more lost than JJ McCarthy at
- 23:26times. I think what we're also
- 23:28realizing is even though JJ McCarthy missed a year, he
- 23:33learned a lot in that year. He he knows the offense.
- 23:37One thing I will say is there have not free snap penalties.
- 23:41He's looks like he's in command of the play call in the huddle
- 23:45and at the line making the checks need to make a lot of
- 23:50that's new to Sam Hollow and you're seeing a lot of
- 23:52indecision in the pocket from him.
- 23:54So I don't think it's something where the Vikings would ever say
- 23:59hi. McCarthy has has looked a little
- 24:01rough for this stretch. Let's see what we have in Sam
- 24:05Hollow because I'm confident Sam Hollow is going to be the backup
- 24:08of this team come Week 1. It has been something for him to
- 24:14to to certainly continue to monitor because there have been
- 24:18times throughout training camp for the second team offense just
- 24:21simply hasn't been able to move the ball.
- 24:23Again, that comes down to a Brian Florida defense is pretty
- 24:26hard to go up again. But yeah, Sam, Sam Howell to me
- 24:31has created a lot more questions than answers to this point
- 24:34through training. Camp.
- 24:35Yeah, I'm I'm actually here in the matches.
- 24:37Brosmer, how you say his name? The former Gopher quarterback
- 24:39that looks has looked pretty good in training camps, so we'll
- 24:43see where that goes. I want to go to the offensive
- 24:45line with you, Dane. Obviously, Darasaw missed a ton
- 24:47of time and they totally revamped it with the exception
- 24:50of Brian O'Neill. They draft on of Jackson, Sign,
- 24:53Kelly and Fries. How's the offensive line look?
- 24:57Boy, on paper, if these guys are, you know, still playing at
- 24:59a high level, that's got to be considered one of the NFL's top
- 25:03lines, I think. How have they looked?
- 25:06Yeah, Kind of incomplete, I guess I would say to this point
- 25:09because we've seen Christian Darisaw run with the starters
- 25:13occasionally, which is a good sign.
- 25:15He's back enough from his torn ACL, torn MCL and he's
- 25:20progressed enough to participate in some of these teen girls,
- 25:24which I think is ahead of schedule.
- 25:26So we've seen Christian Darisaw at times.
- 25:28We've seen Will Fry is working back in coming off of that
- 25:31broken leg, but we have not really seen enough of a ramp
- 25:36play with all five guys on the starting offensive line getting
- 25:40time together, getting time to gel.
- 25:42So the defensive line is dominant, the offensive line
- 25:45throughout camp. But I don't think that
- 25:48necessarily means the offensive line is going to be a struggle
- 25:51this year. I think it will be much
- 25:52improved. I think there was, like you
- 25:55said, a concerted effort from the front office to crack
- 25:58Donovan Jackson sign Ryan Kelly sign Will Fry, pair that with
- 26:03Christian Darris on Brian O'Neill.
- 26:05On paper it looks good because I think on the field it will look
- 26:08good. But right now there are so many
- 26:12guys mixing in and mixing out with with them trying to be
- 26:15careful with the two guys that have been injured that I think
- 26:18there, there have been some struggles up front too.
- 26:22I keep going back to Brian Flores defense, though.
- 26:25Those struggles can be chalked up to that.
- 26:27I mean, you look at what the Vikings did on defense last
- 26:29year, whatever advanced metrics you want to look at or simple
- 26:33metrics you want to look at, they they took another leap
- 26:36forward last year, borderline top 10 defense, regardless of
- 26:41the metrics you look at. And they added Jonathan Allen
- 26:45and Jayvon Hargrave to that mix. Well, the defensive line looks
- 26:48like a bunch of dudes this year. I think they're going to be able
- 26:51to generate pressure from the outside, from the interior.
- 26:55And you're seeing that right now in training camp.
- 26:57It's it's created some issues for the offensive line. 2
- 27:01veterans brought in at cornerback, including Jeff
- 27:04Okuda, who. He's healthy, you feel good
- 27:07problem he's not healthy very often.
- 27:09He could comes in. They also go out to
- 27:10Philadelphia, bring in another. How have the new look
- 27:13quarterbacks looked in this offense?
- 27:14And when you got Flores out there, you know you got to be
- 27:16able to cover. Yeah, honestly, I walked into
- 27:20training thinking if there's one weakness on the defense on
- 27:24paper, it's it's going to be the cornerback position just because
- 27:28those guys are unproven. But Isaiah Rogers and Jeff Okuda
- 27:31have far exceeded my expectations and to the point
- 27:35where, look, I don't think they're going to have the best
- 27:37secondary in the league, but I don't think it's going to be an
- 27:40issue for the Vikings this year. I think Rogers is somebody who
- 27:44is ready to kind of take that next step in his career, and
- 27:48he's somebody who Brian Flores pointed to this offseason and
- 27:51said go get me that guy. I think he can ascend with us,
- 27:55so if Brian Flores likes them, I'm already in on him.
- 27:59But then I see him play. He's one of the fastest guys on
- 28:02the team, has good ball skills, was working through a little bit
- 28:06of like a minor soreness injury early in training camp and is
- 28:09already back playing with the starters so seems to recover
- 28:13pretty well. I like Isaiah Rogers and then
- 28:17Jeff Okuda. He was a number three overall
- 28:20pick for a reason. You see the physical tools.
- 28:23He's been super aggressive in press coverage and beating up
- 28:27some of these receivers throughout camp.
- 28:30How is it going to look during a game when when you're getting
- 28:35flags thrown for for grabbing and and pushing?
- 28:38Maybe a little different, but right now Jeff Okuda, I think to
- 28:41me has separated himself from the rest of that pack.
- 28:44So your your quarterbacks are Byron Murphy, junior Isaiah
- 28:46Rogers, Jeff Okuda and then a bunch of other guys kind of
- 28:50competing for for spot minutes here and there.
- 28:52Speaking of competing for minutes, if you play fantasy
- 28:56football, inevitably there's one guy that's going into that draft
- 28:59with hope with. I got to sleep running back,
- 29:01man. I hope he's there.
- 29:02And that's Jordan Mason, who's getting more love from fantasy
- 29:05players as he's going to be that guy that's going to be, you
- 29:09know, you're going to draft late and is going to win your league
- 29:11for you. What do you see out of him?
- 29:13Aaron Jones obviously is going to get to give up some carries
- 29:16if Mason is going to be the guy, but how about those two at
- 29:19running back? Yeah, I don't know if I would go
- 29:23as far as saying it'll be a 5050 split, but I don't think Jordan
- 29:26Mason is a backup running back. I think he is very much of the
- 29:31ilk of a guy who mixes in and gets a lot of carries.
- 29:34Wouldn't surprise me if Jordan Mason led the team in touchdowns
- 29:37from the running back position this year because I think he's
- 29:39going to get the goal line work. He's a monster.
- 29:42He he looks different out there. That's the only way I can
- 29:46describe it. He's big, but because he's big,
- 29:49you would assume he's not fast. Well, he's also pretty fast.
- 29:53I like Jordan Mason. I think that was good trade that
- 29:57the Vikings made that maybe flew under the radar at the time, but
- 30:00how he could mix with Aaron Jones could unlock something
- 30:04else in this offense. I think we saw what Aaron Jones
- 30:07can do last year had one of the best seasons of his career and
- 30:11he had a lot of really good seasons throughout his career.
- 30:15But he did log a career high 306 touches and I think the Vikings
- 30:19understood that he's on the wrong side of 30.
- 30:22And while he it looks like he has a lot of tread left on the
- 30:25tires, they give him the workload they did last year.
- 30:30So you bring in a guy like Jordan Mason, I think it'll be a
- 30:322 headed monster at running back.
- 30:34And I think they really are going to rely on the run game
- 30:36this year because they have a young quarterback.
- 30:39You don't want to put the weight of the world on his shoulder.
- 30:41So I like Aaron Jones still in this offense.
- 30:43But yes, certainly Jordan Mason classified to me as a sleeper to
- 30:49kind of keep your eye on. Last thing for me and over too
- 30:52little baseball. It didn't go over well in the
- 30:54Condon household. I'm going to guess it didn't go
- 30:55over well. The trade deadline for the
- 30:57Minnesota Twins and what they did.
- 31:00Here we are less than a week later from the deadline.
- 31:03How's the reaction and is is that the point now?
- 31:05The only thing that's going to maybe cure things as a sale of
- 31:08the team. Yeah, I think people are just
- 31:10out on this team and it was the rhetoric all over Twitter, but
- 31:15really a master class from the ownership and how to lose a fan
- 31:18base in two years. I was at that against the Blue
- 31:22Jays, grown man weeping because it had been so long.
- 31:27Just the energy of of Target Field that night, it felt like
- 31:31something special was brewing. Then you cut pay payroll the
- 31:35following year. Then you trade the entire
- 31:37bullpen and and much of the team and obviously Carlos Correa a
- 31:42year after that. So I will say, look, the core of
- 31:47the team is still intact. They they traded Carlos Correa
- 31:52and a bunch of guys expiring and then their entire bullpen.
- 31:56So it wasn't necessarily, I mean, it was a fire sale unlike
- 32:01anything I've ever seen. Didn't trade Buxton, they didn't
- 32:04trade Joe Ryan, they didn't trade Pablo Lopez.
- 32:06Like the team, there is a pathway to go back to relevance.
- 32:12But at the same time, I I don't know if that happens in 2026.
- 32:17I don't know if that happens in 2027.
- 32:19It does feel like a hard reset. And I think you nailed it,
- 32:22Trent. The best way for the Twins as a
- 32:25organization to garner some goodwill up from the fan base is
- 32:31for the Poll Labs to sell. At this point, I think people
- 32:33are done with that ownership group.
- 32:35They have been for a while. They're certainly out on them
- 32:38now. The whole franchise needs to
- 32:41facelift. I I hope at least for for the
- 32:45twist sake that Byron Buxton doesn't have a change of heart
- 32:47at some. I'm waving that thing here.
- 32:51He seems to be long for Minnesota, but that could change
- 32:54if there's no forward motion here in the next year. 2 years.
- 32:58Three years. Dane Mazatani, St.
- 33:00Paul, Pioneer Press, twincities.com.
- 33:02Dane, thank you for doing this. We will impose on you in the
- 33:05weeks ahead. Thank you, Dane.
- 33:06Appreciate it. Anytime guys.
- 33:08Thank. You thank you, Dame Mizutani as
- 33:10we check in on the Vikings. From the Vikings to the Chiefs,
- 33:14Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the Iowa Sports
- 33:17Radio Network. I'm Mallory Condon.
- 33:22Welcome back to Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:24Wherever you're listening in the state of Iowa.
- 33:26Grateful that you are time for the Chiefs daily training camp
- 33:29report. Papa John, throughout the state
- 33:32of Iowa, they sponsor these. Mitch Holtis is the voice of the
- 33:35Chiefs and he joins us. Hello, Mitch.
- 33:37Trenton, Ken. How's camp today?
- 33:40Good. This is kind of what I call the
- 33:42third push because I know there's a preseason game looming
- 33:47on Saturday night, but there's no real prep for that.
- 33:50It's more of keep pushing this team in pads for three days in a
- 33:54row here to get ready for not only the Chargers, but for the
- 33:57remaining 17 weeks, the regular season and hopefully beyond.
- 34:01So work's got to get done. Coach keeps the push is still
- 34:05on. Gotcha, Xavier.
- 34:07Worthy's in the spotlight today and you're #2 for the speedster
- 34:12from Texas, Mitch, He might have been the, I guess the only
- 34:18positive in what was a disappointing Super Bowl for
- 34:21Chiefs fans with the two touchdowns.
- 34:23Maybe his best game of the year was his last game of the year.
- 34:27Obviously looking to build on that.
- 34:30Yeah, those were legitimate plays too.
- 34:31He had to do kind of a scramble drill and the first touchdown,
- 34:35the second one, he used the speed and got by him.
- 34:38And some might say, well, hey, that was the game was out of
- 34:41hand and yes, it was, but the Eagles are still playing.
- 34:44So but he had 38 of his targets. It kind of just the most of his
- 34:49volume was in the back end of the season.
- 34:52And what Ken, The thing is about Xavier Brown is he came out
- 34:56fastest guy in the combine 425. But there's more to him.
- 35:01There's a toughness to him and there is he's learning more and
- 35:05more and more. And we saw this at the end of
- 35:06the season where again, his targets went way up.
- 35:11I'm going to look here. I had to look at it last night.
- 35:12Actually, 31 of his 98 targets were in the last three regular
- 35:15season games that he played. He didn't play Week 18 against
- 35:18Denver when they didn't play their starters.
- 35:20But all that just kind of fueled his tank and he's becoming a
- 35:26route runner toughness and he's ready to go if we're he wants to
- 35:30play tonight. Oh man, I'm ready.
- 35:34I can't wait. I can't wait.
- 35:37What have you learned about being in this offense, How
- 35:39comprehensive it is in being precise and route warning and
- 35:43playing with Pat? Right.
- 35:44Just understanding like the precision they want things and
- 35:46the way they want things direct and how they work.
- 35:48I kind of got in custom of how they started working last year
- 35:51towards the end of the year and now I'm ready.
- 35:53And attacking the back half of the field?
- 35:55What about attacking deep? Wait, we're going to be going
- 35:58deep this year? Going deep.
- 36:01What about the return game if they throw you back there?
- 36:03Oh man, that's something I wanted to do.
- 36:05A part of. Return is something that I kind
- 36:06of emphasized in college, so that's something I kind of want
- 36:08to get back. To Dave Tobbs, if he put him
- 36:11back there, he'd be the best returner on our team and maybe
- 36:15in the league. He was awesome at Texas with it.
- 36:17Go watch his part returning. It's BYU his last year at UT.
- 36:21But in that quote, Ken and Trent, you heard the word
- 36:24precision then that's what he has learned.
- 36:27And interesting, as a wide receiver in this system, you got
- 36:29to learn every, every position that's one 2 with Pat, you have
- 36:33to be precise. He doesn't want you an eighth of
- 36:36an inch off. But the third thing is you have
- 36:39to learn to play with Pat when the play within a play breaks
- 36:42down. And so now you got to be
- 36:44scramble drill receiver. So all of that is on your plate
- 36:46if you're going to play receiver with Pat Mahomes in this
- 36:48offense. You also mentioned kind of in
- 36:51your note about what it's going to look like with Hollywood
- 36:53Brown and Rasheed Rice and him and Xavier Worthy out there
- 36:56together. We're still in the holding
- 36:58pattern with Rasheed Rice. What can you tell us on that
- 37:00front and as they await the NF LS decision, did the Chiefs
- 37:04anticipate that's going to happen soon or is it just a
- 37:06holding pattern for everybody? Perfect question, I wish I had
- 37:10an answer. I don't.
- 37:12There is no tea leaves at all in this and so we don't have any
- 37:17idea. I've heard nothing about how
- 37:19many games it's going to be, when it's going to come down.
- 37:22Is there an appeal? So I don't have an answer for
- 37:25you now. You feel like it's looming,
- 37:28right? We're not going to go, oh, hey,
- 37:29he's not going to get suspended. And then with Hollywood's injury
- 37:31now it doesn't appear to be serious, but still, he's out.
- 37:35Now we're back to Xavier Worthy and the other guys, which is
- 37:38what the whole season was last year because we didn't have
- 37:41Hollywood to the very end and didn't have Rice at all after
- 37:44Week 4. So you'd love to feel three of
- 37:46those guys get out there, plus Burchard Smith, Jalen Royals,
- 37:49and I mean, you got speed all over the place, but you'd like
- 37:52to have at some point all hands on deck.
- 37:54But Worthy is just more than we thought, more than just a fast
- 37:57guy. He's turning into a route
- 37:59runner, pass catcher, can hit you all over the field.
- 38:02And Brown, correct me if I'm wrong, it was like the first
- 38:05snap of pre season he got hurt right?
- 38:08Riddle yeah, same injury, oddly enough at Jacksonville that
- 38:12Tyree Kill had back in the 20 season.
- 38:16Was that where it was this clavicle or very rare clavicle
- 38:19injury that becomes very serious because the clavicle bone, you
- 38:22can get up there and feel it can can go in to near an artery.
- 38:27It can actually be fatal when it happened to Tyree kill Jalen
- 38:30Ramsey got him threw him to the ground.
- 38:32They immediately rushed him to the hospital because that if the
- 38:36clavicle and I'm not a doctor, but you got him out there.
- 38:39The clavicle breaks and breaks inside, then it can sever an
- 38:43artery and kill you. So interestingly enough, here we
- 38:46are like several years later, same field, same team.
- 38:48This one, the preseason first play he gets the same injury.
- 38:52So it was scary for Hollywood, but he came back.
- 38:55We had him at the end of the year for a little bit, a little
- 38:58bit in the playoffs, but you'd I love to have him out there a lot
- 39:00and so we're still waiting for that.
- 39:03Final thing for me, we'll be watching like Jalen Royals,
- 39:07right? Those young wide receivers.
- 39:08You always like to give us a name, though, at the wide
- 39:10receiver position since that's kind of the spotlight today.
- 39:13Is there an undrafted free agent maybe we should be looking for
- 39:16come Saturday night? Not undrafted free agent, but
- 39:20the guy here that's risen to the head of the class is Taekwon
- 39:24Thornton. Now he played at Baylor.
- 39:27Iowa State fans will remember him fairly productive.
- 39:30Wasn't a 1500 yard guy, but he was drafted by New England and
- 39:34his rookie year, couple touchdowns and some yards for
- 39:36the Patriots. Then he kind of got lost in the
- 39:38shuffle and now here is back with us.
- 39:40He's been one of the stories of this camp.
- 39:42But I'm going to put Nico Ramihio right beside him.
- 39:45He was Fresno State undrafted free agent on a system for two
- 39:49years. Cut practice squad, cut, let go,
- 39:51come back. Any of the 63 yard punt returned
- 39:54in the playoffs last year which ignited this team.
- 39:57That's a real battle. If Rice isn't suspended, then
- 40:00you've got 7 wide receivers, you're probably going to have
- 40:02six. And those two guys go right to
- 40:05the front of this discussion. And my answer to.
- 40:07Let's go to the front of dinner plans tonight.
- 40:09Mitch told us what we got to, what we got working on.
- 40:13Value, man, it's value 1299. We don't, Gretzky.
- 40:15This would have been his favorite pizza.
- 40:17Just the $0.99 on the back end. Make it cool.
- 40:21But yeah, we got this cheeseburger pizza going on a
- 40:24medium for just 1299. And the Donaldsons, you know,
- 40:27are incredible. I got a chance to see him this
- 40:30offseason. I just, I don't want to take him
- 40:32for granted. I don't want Iowa to take him
- 40:34for granted because they and their managers all throughout
- 40:36the state love the state. They do so much that people
- 40:40don't even know. Hour 2 coming up next, Mitch.
- 40:42We'll talk to you tomorrow. Mitch Holt, his voice to the
- 40:44Chiefs. Hour 2 is next.
