- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the I'm team series and you are daily influence.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_01]: Today, I'm going to be talking to you about, you know, how we make decisions in the board room.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, that's a funny topic because most of the people that we consult to,
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: don't make decisions out of a board room.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: They might make it in committee that might make it with a team of leaders and their organizations or their board room as they define it might be friends and family or it might be peers.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_01]: It might be undefined yet still there might be people that we interact with that we bounce ideas off of when we are making business decisions and you know.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's good to have outside influence for us when we're trying to make these decisions.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: But what's really important is that those people, whoever or however you define your board, your advisory board, your committees, whatever it is you call them, that it's about alignment and trust and the value of what they're giving you.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: What's the energy like?
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: What tune are they playing?
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: What is their mind to set when they're talking about strategy or tactics?
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: And the question is, does it align?
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: Can you see unspoken cues or different energies within the people that you turn to to help you make decisions for your organization and that?
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: How do they set priorities that influence their executive decisions and influences and is how they do it aligned with you?
- 2:29[SPEAKER_01]: Are you even asking these questions of people that you turn to for advice?
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: And it's really important that you understand these frequencies that you're tuned into what resonates with the people who are helping you make decisions.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: There has to be clarity, there has to be confidence, there has to be consistency.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: In all of those, have to align with your values of the mission of your organization, do the people that you turn to for advice, even know your core values.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: Do they even understand your mission?
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: So this aligns really well with being intentional about our influence, not about only about how we influence others, but also how we are influence and what we allow into our environment to our world to help us be informed, stay informed, and make responsible decisions.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: that we want to be made collaboratively.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: We want to lean into support and the experience of other people.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: In this clarity, we cut through noise.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: So in these decisions, what we're making strategy decisions, when we're going from strategy to tactic, when we're making very critical points about where we're headed, we can oftentimes get lost in the forest, get lost in the weeds.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: We can be Biden-barded within formation.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: Is that information smart?
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: Is it specific measurable?
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: And does it support what our strategy and our goals are?
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: So what influences us through all this is what is clear?
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: Also, what isn't clear?
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: The lack of clarity, the lack of purpose, the lack of clearly presented data, the lack of connection of that data,
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: it's the wrong frequency, it's digression.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: So think about how you align your message with those that help you and how that reconciles to your organizational goals and how you're going to present that to help people bring their best selves for what you walk from them to the discussion and look influence happens between the words.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: There's these gaps.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: between the words.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's not always about what we say.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's about how we say it.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: And when we say it, we just talked about this recently about body language, but in this situation,
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: When we're with these people that we turn to as our board, as our advisors, it often, you can get cues from their tone, you can get cues from their posture, the timing.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: You can also get cues from what they don't say.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: If you have people in your board room that you rely on who are not engaging, there might be a reason why.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: Clarity means you'll ask them, why aren't you engaging?
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: What is it about this topic that you don't feel like you have anything to contribute?
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: you have agreed to help us grow.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_01]: Do you not have an opinion?
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: Is there something that you're lacking that could help you contextually help us in a smart way?
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: And when you do this, you develop this bigger and better sense of awareness, but you're always also building in accountability and discipline about speaking the board's language, about what you expect from these board
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: It gets them tuned into the frequency of your business.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's why this conversation is happening.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: And it allows them and you to have empathy for whatever comes to the conversation.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: It allows for better foresight.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: And it gives you confidence in knowing that the conversation you're having with people who are giving you advice that
- 6:22[SPEAKER_01]: It aligns with your core values, that it's reckoned to your mission and that it's being very intentional and thoughtful about your strategies and the tactics that are being developed from those strategies.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: So when you're in these advisory rooms, when you're in these board rooms, when you're discussing with your peers, your business, be this way.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_01]: be intentional, listen to that frequency, make sure that there's clarity of understanding of what the topic is, what it's for and where it's going and that it reconciles and aligns with your core values.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, if you are on the other end of this, if you go into an environment where you're the advisor for a friend or a family member or on a painted scene, engage.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_01]: Introduce this smart approach towards advisory, towards board room frequency.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: Let them see how you can bring everything to the top, get through the noise, get through the lack of participation, and really get to what you're there for.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: Strategy and tactical development within the core values of mission of the work in this session.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for being here today.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: I look forward to talking to you again in the next few days.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_01]: Have a good day.
