- 0:00Speaker 1: Inside Bears Smoke House Barbecue here in downtown Hartford, alongside
- 0:03Speaker 1: head coach Mike Cavnot Adam Giardino with you thanks to
- 0:07Speaker 1: Christian Antonio, alongside and Andrew Allison. Back in the studio,
- 0:11Speaker 1: we dove into the two wins Boston College. You master well.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Then on Saturday we dipped our toes into what was
- 0:17Speaker 1: a one nothing defeat. After a game like that where
- 0:21Speaker 1: it's one that, like you said, you played well, you
- 0:23Speaker 1: probably thought you could have won that one. What do
- 0:27Speaker 1: you say to your team after that kind of a performance.
- 0:31Speaker 2: It's disappointing. It's a game that you know, I think
- 0:35Speaker 2: that we played well enough to win, but we didn't
- 0:37Speaker 2: find a way to win it. So you try to
- 0:42Speaker 2: let them know. You know, it's disappointing to come out
- 0:46Speaker 2: of there without the points, because there was points to
- 0:48Speaker 2: be had. However, we have to stay focused still on
- 0:53Speaker 2: the process, and we have to stay focused on you know,
- 0:57Speaker 2: how are our special teams. We lost that game one nothing,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and face offs are pretty good. We didn't give up
- 1:02Speaker 2: any odd man rushes, We were pretty good getting pucks
- 1:07Speaker 2: to the net, and you know, we didn't take any
- 1:09Speaker 2: undisciplined penalties. So in a lot of areas we were good,
- 1:14Speaker 2: but there's a lot of good teams in our league
- 1:17Speaker 2: and you've got to be As the season goes on,
- 1:21Speaker 2: I think you'll see that you have to keep building
- 1:24Speaker 2: and understanding that we're going to be in a lot
- 1:27Speaker 2: of tight games and you have to do the little
- 1:30Speaker 2: things and find ways to have that just slight edge
- 1:34Speaker 2: that gives you the advantage at the end. And we
- 1:39Speaker 2: probably didn't do that as enough.
- 1:41Speaker 1: On Saturday, after you lose a couple of games to Merrimack,
- 1:45Speaker 1: you said, okay, the team, you could see that switch flip.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Do you see when you lose, you win the next
- 1:52Speaker 1: two games and then you lose to UMass Lowel on Saturday?
- 1:55Speaker 1: Is there a different posture to the team after that
- 1:58Speaker 1: kind of a loss of you know, okay, yes we lost,
- 2:02Speaker 1: but we know where to go from here, versus maybe
- 2:05Speaker 1: a loss earlier in the season.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's such a long season. I think that you
- 2:14Speaker 2: can't let one loss derail your club. You have to
- 2:18Speaker 2: be very pragmatic with your thinking. I believe and as
- 2:22Speaker 2: a club we have to be a team that sees
- 2:26Speaker 2: the bigger picture and not get paralyzed by one loss. Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 2: it was disappointing, and that could be a loss type
- 2:34Speaker 2: of game that you play in the playoffs that ends
- 2:36Speaker 2: your season. And those are the things that you have
- 2:38Speaker 2: to relay to your team and make sure that they understand.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So if we have to play Lowell in the playoffs,
- 2:44Speaker 2: which might happen, you know, and they're a very defensive team,
- 2:47Speaker 2: and we understand that you're not going to get as
- 2:50Speaker 2: many chances as you might against some other teams. You
- 2:53Speaker 2: got to make your chances count and you have to
- 2:55Speaker 2: have second and third chances, and those are the things
- 2:57Speaker 2: that we have to learn, so, you know, and it's
- 3:03Speaker 2: not you know, with this team here when I look
- 3:05Speaker 2: back on our past teams, it's not you know, indigenous
- 3:09Speaker 2: to this team here. It's something that for years in
- 3:14Speaker 2: Hockey East. You have to have a bigger picture and
- 3:17Speaker 2: look at the bigger picture and understand that if you
- 3:20Speaker 2: keep playing well and you keep improving, and your power
- 3:22Speaker 2: play keeps getting better and your penalty kill keeps getting
- 3:25Speaker 2: better and your five on five play, you're possessing the
- 3:29Speaker 2: puck and the offensive zone more than the other team,
- 3:31Speaker 2: and you're not taking on disciplined penalties and you're not
- 3:34Speaker 2: giving up odd man Russia's. If you stay with that
- 3:37Speaker 2: and make that your focus, you'll be pretty good down
- 3:41Speaker 2: the stretch.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Coming up here in the show, we're going to talk
- 3:44Speaker 1: to a couple of freshmen, and Kayden Shahan and Kai
- 3:47Speaker 1: Jan Veria. We're going to talk to kay first. I'll
- 3:50Speaker 1: ask you about him first, What if what has impressed
- 3:53Speaker 1: you most about his play since he's arrived and you've
- 3:56Speaker 1: gotten to see him for length in person.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Well, with Kai, there is no fear. I mean you
- 4:04Speaker 2: look at a player of his stature and there's never
- 4:08Speaker 2: any fear in him. He goes back for pucks and
- 4:13Speaker 2: he plays with It's funny because he's not reckless, but
- 4:22Speaker 2: he plays the game on his toes and he's not
- 4:28Speaker 2: afraid to make mistakes, and he plays with such confidence
- 4:31Speaker 2: that it's one thing it's really hard to teach, and
- 4:34Speaker 2: he has that Now. There's things areas of his game
- 4:37Speaker 2: that certainly can improve, and he's a student of the
- 4:41Speaker 2: game and he wants to continue to get better. And
- 4:43Speaker 2: I love his energy that he brings to practice. And
- 4:46Speaker 2: Chasey does the same thing. He's another one who you know,
- 4:51Speaker 2: his game's built on speed and shooting the puck. But
- 4:54Speaker 2: what he doesn't get enough credit for is how tenacious
- 4:56Speaker 2: he is off the puck hill battle and you know,
- 5:03Speaker 2: like does little things like slash across the icy ce.
- 5:06Speaker 2: He's the one who has the most. He has a
- 5:09Speaker 2: great feel of when to leave the zone and try
- 5:12Speaker 2: to get a breakaway. He has probably our most breakaways
- 5:14Speaker 2: this year because he knows when to take off and
- 5:18Speaker 2: he doesn't compromise or his defensive responsibilities for offense. He
- 5:23Speaker 2: does it at the right time. So he's a kid.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I think it too that is just scratching the surface
- 5:29Speaker 2: on how good he can be.
- 5:31Speaker 1: And then for yeah, Kayden Shahan, I think earlier in
- 5:33Speaker 1: the year you said he knows where to go with
- 5:35Speaker 1: the puck before he has it. Is that that was
- 5:39Speaker 1: your initial impression of him. Has that been pretty consistent
- 5:42Speaker 1: from him throughout?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if that's necessarily his best strength.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I think his is you know, Gardula is one of
- 5:51Speaker 2: those kids who knows where he wants to go with
- 5:53Speaker 2: it before. Trey Scott is a kid that has a
- 5:58Speaker 2: great feel of where he wants to go with it.
- 5:59Speaker 2: You know, our best is probably Jake Richard. He sees
- 6:04Speaker 2: the game so quickly. But I think Shazy is a
- 6:10Speaker 2: kid that he definitely understands the game and he's got
- 6:13Speaker 2: a high hockey IQ, but he's just a he's a
- 6:17Speaker 2: goal scorer and he's driven to get shots on net
- 6:21Speaker 2: and score goals. And as he gets stronger and gets
- 6:26Speaker 2: more comfortable with playing hockey east and just understands. You
- 6:30Speaker 2: got to remember when you're a freshman and you're coming
- 6:32Speaker 2: in and you've never ever played a game at Walter
- 6:36Speaker 2: Brown or I'm sorry not Walter Brown at Aganis I'm
- 6:39Speaker 2: dating myself there, or at alphond or Loler Arena. It's new.
- 6:44Speaker 2: But once you have that under your belt, and that's
- 6:47Speaker 2: why you see like Muldowney playing so well on Tattle Playing.
- 6:50Speaker 2: They know what to expect when they go to those arenas.
- 6:52Speaker 2: They know what to expect when they go to Lowell.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They know what kind of team Lowell is, so it's
- 6:57Speaker 2: very familiar for them. They're not surprised by so that
- 7:01Speaker 2: I think will only benefit these guys as they go forward.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Kai Jamboree is up next, Kayden Shae Hans to follow,
- 7:08Speaker 1: and then we'll wrap things up with Mike Kavanaugh here
- 7:10Speaker 1: from Hartford. You're listening to the Yukon Men's ice Hockey
