Transcript
- 0:03Hi, good morning, good afternoon, welcome Miller and
- 0:05Condon on a Tuesday, it's the Iowa sports radio network.
- 0:09Trent Condon, Ken Miller, we're going to talk sports with you.
- 0:14Bad day for the baseball is boring crowd.
- 0:17My God, what a game we'll get into that.
- 0:19Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:21We will recap the NFL like we normally do on Tuesdays.
- 0:25We'll get that in segment #1 and then Frank Schwab will join us
- 0:28for a few minutes from yahoosports.com, where he covers
- 0:32the NFL. We'll get Frank in here about
- 0:331225. Elliot Cleff.
- 0:36No press conferences today that I'm aware of.
- 0:39There are. There are.
- 0:40Yes, coordinators, Coordinators at 1:00.
- 0:42So we'll get Elliot right before then and he'll sneak back into
- 0:46the room for the press conferences.
- 0:47Good. But I I really wanted to pick
- 0:50his brain on any Intel on the exhibition game.
- 0:54The top secret exhibition game with Texas Tech.
- 0:57Have you heard anything? Yes.
- 0:59Oh, you have? Yes.
- 1:00I should just ask you. That Well, you should I, like
- 1:02you, don't think I got my ear to the ground.
- 1:04What did you hear? Positive.
- 1:05Negative. Concerning.
- 1:07Didn't shoot the ball well. Again, they competed well.
- 1:11Much better defensively than they were in the first time out
- 1:13against Saint Louis. Had some troubles inside, but
- 1:17probably the biggest take away, again, they were blitzing out
- 1:21Bennett Sturtz did a better job of that.
- 1:23He was able to combat it. I think they had some counters
- 1:25to kind of the defense that they saw against Saint Louis.
- 1:28Much better shots didn't fall. I think they were like one of
- 1:31fourteen in the first half, something like that.
- 1:33Shot a little bit better in the second.
- 1:34Lost by like 10 right in that range.
- 1:37That's the top ten, no? Texas.
- 1:38Texas is really good. That's a very good team, but
- 1:42defense improving. Them Houston, BYU in the Big 12.
- 1:47I need to see it with BYU before I put him up in that tier.
- 1:51Got to see how the freshman look and before I'm ready to get
- 1:55there. But Houston, absolutely.
- 1:57Texas Tech's going to be really good.
- 1:59And then we'll figure out from there.
- 2:02Let's see what else do they have.
- 2:03A couple other things. I don't know how much Brendan
- 2:06Howson how how he's kind of figuring in had that injury this
- 2:10summer that he missed some time, sounded like Alvaro Fool.
- 2:13Garris maybe wasn't, he's still, they're still trying to work it
- 2:18all out of him. You know, I had some, some maybe
- 2:20bad tendencies that they're trying to coach out of him.
- 2:23Tends to float a little bit, need him to be a little bit more
- 2:25dynamic. But overall, I, I think a good
- 2:28performance. I think from what I heard
- 2:30they're pretty happy with the way the things went.
- 2:32And and now they're done until the actual.
- 2:35Yes, and then they'll open up against Alvaro Fool Garris, his
- 2:38old team, Robert Morris will open things up and game one of
- 2:41the Ben Mcalmara. Good stuff.
- 2:43Well, we'll talk to. Elliot, it's got more than I do.
- 2:45Though, and we'll pick his brain and on that one, he joins us
- 2:47here at about 12:45. At 1:00, I'd forgotten what
- 2:51we're. Doing Matt Snyder.
- 2:52Of course, we'll head to Los Angeles with
- 2:54mattsnydercbssports.com. Get him out of bed as he is
- 2:58covering the World Series Games 3-4 and five in LA, and then we
- 3:03will wrap things up with Bill Bender.
- 3:05We'll talk some college football with our buddy Bill Bender from
- 3:08The Sporting News. Trent will make some picks
- 3:09before we get out of here as there's college football tonight
- 3:12guessing a big slate in the NBA and oh by the way, game four of
- 3:15the World Series. Is Otani going to be ready to
- 3:18pitch after the game that he played last night was on base,
- 3:21what, 9 times in the baseball game?
- 3:23Trent, The game had something for everybody, including in just
- 3:25an atrocious call early in the game that cost the Jays,
- 3:29probably cost them a run, but it's not like it.
- 3:32Beau Bichette is not without fault, you know, wandering off
- 3:35first base. I mean, you got to be aware of
- 3:37what's going on and umpires of a slow, quiet call or not.
- 3:42And it was Balfour. It was it was an egregious miss.
- 3:46Varsho starts walking off Bichette.
- 3:48They're both kind of confused. Varsho then steps back toward
- 3:51the batter's box and then starts walking toward first.
- 3:54So I get why Bichette's going, but that was disappointing.
- 4:00Next year when we get the. Automated system you can
- 4:03challenge I'm. Almost ready to just do away
- 4:05with them and just have every ball and strike be.
- 4:06On I know you hate it. I hate it.
- 4:08I don't. I want a guy behind the plate,
- 4:10you know, if the, if you're, if the buzzer in your left arm or
- 4:12left hand goes, that's a ball you're right-handed to strike.
- 4:15That's enough for me. Get it right.
- 4:17We've had we have the technology, as the $6 million
- 4:20man said once said. I that play, though, when we
- 4:25have the challenge system, Challenge system taps his
- 4:28helmet. All right, we go.
- 4:29Yeah, it was ball 4MM. Hmm.
- 4:30Is the runner still out of first base or because it's ball four?
- 4:35I would be. It's a dead ball and everybody
- 4:37just progresses. Well, he called a strike, right,
- 4:40Right. But they challenge it in the
- 4:42future, so. They so they go back and get it
- 4:44right and put Bichette back on or or second base if they would
- 4:47have. So let's let the play play out.
- 4:50Yes, while they're determining whether it's a ball.
- 4:53Well, I'm not sure they would have got that far.
- 4:55Hard to say. Because it was ball 4, it should
- 4:57have been ball four and the challenge system that we'll have
- 5:00next year, they had tapped the helmets ball 4.
- 5:03So that play didn't happen because it was actually ball
- 5:05four. He goes to second base.
- 5:07Yes, you'd believe. Yes.
- 5:09That's the way it should be, Absolutely.
- 5:10Yeah. That was one thing I was just
- 5:12wondering last night if it plays out in that fashion.
- 5:14It has to be right? It has to be.
- 5:16It has to be. Guerrero makes an unbelievable
- 5:19throw to third base, just an unbelievable throw to third
- 5:22base. Tommy Edmund says hold by there
- 5:23was a lot of them. Oh my God, I thought Garreau
- 5:26might have played that made one of the most the best defensive
- 5:28play certainly in the game. And then a couple of innings
- 5:31later the play with Edmunds play when the the ball was how he was
- 5:39able to slide stand and throw to third base to get Kiner Faleppa
- 5:45who was in because of his speed. I mean, if Beau Bachette kind of
- 5:50Faleppa came in for Bichette, if Bichette is still in the game,
- 5:53is kind of Faleppa going to 3rd? Probably not.
- 5:54No, probably not. But you can also be mad at your
- 5:57team for not getting a runner in scoring position for 10 straight
- 5:59innings. Oh, for sure.
- 6:01Yeah, absolutely. But it's just that those two
- 6:04throws at third base the the real, the relay throw by by
- 6:08Edmund to to gun down Snyder at home plate was unbelievable.
- 6:13Look, here's my take away on the whole thing.
- 6:15If you've got a guy in your team, Nathan Lucas and Miles
- 6:18struck, can you really beat the Dodgers with those two bumps?
- 6:21Seriously, Lucas is a career minor leaguer.
- 6:23He swung at 2 twice. He swung at ball four against
- 6:27Clayton Kershaw twice. That brings that walks in the
- 6:30winning run. Who knows where it goes.
- 6:32Otani was unbelievable. The Dodgers bullpen that we, not
- 6:35just we baseball killed leading up to this World Series was
- 6:39unbelievable last night. What do you like to have George
- 6:42Springer for those last? 11 right?
- 6:45There's another one. There's A and he's not soft.
- 6:49I mean, you could tell he was wincing.
- 6:52He was wince. He went to the hospital for
- 6:54crying out loud. It's not like he's in the locker
- 6:56room, you know, eating the post game spread.
- 7:00He was at the hospital for an MRI.
- 7:03What a game. What a game.
- 7:05Unreal. How about that?
- 7:07Yeah. How about that?
- 7:09Will Klein. They just find another one, they
- 7:11do. And when client first comes in,
- 7:12So what? What was he that he was the
- 7:1412345? 6 The last one.
- 7:16Is the 10th guy coming 10th or 11?
- 7:18Yeah. Last guy to come in and right
- 7:20away just blowing 99 like this guy?
- 7:22Don't know. I don't know who this guy is.
- 7:23Yeah, I watched some baseball. I don't know who he is, and he
- 7:27just up there blowing 90. I'm just, what a different world
- 7:30we're living in a Major League Baseball.
- 7:31That was yet another example. And that guy gutted it out,
- 7:35getting 4 innings out of him. Just absolutely tremendous.
- 7:38What did he finish with? 4 innings, 5 strikeouts, two
- 7:41walks. I'm looking at 72 pitches.
- 7:43Yeah, 72 pitches that. Guy didn't think he was going to
- 7:45throw 72 pitches for the Dodgers all year, right?
- 7:48He throws 72 in a World Series game.
- 7:51The The storylines, the edge of your seat, the decision, the.
- 7:55Questionable Why is why is Schneider after Vladigro an
- 7:58unbelievable at the plate where he hits him with his hand on a
- 8:02on a on a Bang Bang play at home at home plate for the Jays to go
- 8:06up five four in the game. Why do you why do you pitch to a
- 8:09dog? What are you doing?
- 8:11It's. Not the time.
- 8:12And then after that, he figured it out.
- 8:14And it's walk him, walk him and walk little too late.
- 8:17John Schneider. Joel, welcome to the program.
- 8:20Thanks for being patient. Joel, how are you?
- 8:22I'm good. First of all, Full disclosure,
- 8:24I'm a big Dodger fan and I'm. A Big Blue Jays fan.
- 8:27So back to. And good for you.
- 8:28I'm very, very impressed. Very impressed with your team.
- 8:30They're fighting harder than you know any team can.
- 8:34Here's my thoughts. Schneider came out today and and
- 8:38said he's not going to pitch to Otani.
- 8:40Doesn't look bad for baseball and the Blue Jays to say we
- 8:43can't even pitch to this guy, we're not good enough.
- 8:46In a way, yes, but in a way it's the right move.
- 8:49You want to win the game. I get it.
- 8:51And, and, and by the way, they were, they were not supposed to
- 8:54pitch to Otani. He was supposed to pitch all
- 8:56balls when he hit the last home. Run.
- 8:58That's why, that's why, that's why he started intentionally
- 9:01walking. Just put the four fingers up.
- 9:03I didn't know that part. Oh my God, that's the.
- 9:06Worst. So what are you expecting him
- 9:09tonight, Joel, after the game that he played yesterday?
- 9:12I don't. The late the lateness of the
- 9:15game is somewhat of an issue. He was being walked and he
- 9:18didn't do much. So he's he can't be all that
- 9:20tired because of because of his play he got.
- 9:22Thrown out at second base on a steal.
- 9:23He did, and he kind of tweaked himself.
- 9:25When he was when he was pushed off the base, but they never
- 9:28called that. Ken Herbeck says that's fine.
- 9:30Ken Herbeck says that's a OK to do that.
- 9:33Yeah, that's fine. Yeah, that's Yeah, I, I did
- 9:35never win her. Whatever.
- 9:36That's a good one. Yeah, whatever you you keep
- 9:39playing. And by the way, Trent, they did
- 9:41play out that walk play. That's why he got ticked off.
- 9:44Is that what it was? Dead ball.
- 9:45Yeah, yeah, it was never a dead ball.
- 9:47It was never a dead strike. So right, right.
- 9:50I'm just saying next, next year, when there's a challenge, you
- 9:53challenge it because it was an awful you.
- 9:55Challenge it, you challenge it. It's a ball.
- 9:57And and if it was ball 4, which I believe it was, now you get
- 9:59runners on 1st and second. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:02You put them back out. You don't.
- 10:03Yeah, it's, it's a weird play. There were so many weird things.
- 10:06I was phenomenal. It was.
- 10:07So fun they could keep up with it.
- 10:08I mean, look into the numbers sometime online when you get a
- 10:11chance to see all the different numbers that came out of that
- 10:12game. It's phenomenal.
- 10:13Joel, thanks and go ahead. And at my age, this another game
- 10:17like that's going to kill me. How?
- 10:18Old are you? How old are you, Joel?
- 10:20I'm 67 by two till the end of the game.
- 10:23Did you? I didn't.
- 10:24I didn't. I made it to the 14th.
- 10:27The 18th was going to be my last inning, too.
- 10:29I was going to go to bed. Yeah.
- 10:31So. So thank you, Freddie.
- 10:32Yeah, good stuff. Thanks all.
- 10:34Appreciate the. Call.
- 10:35You bet. We just talked for 10 minutes.
- 10:36We didn't even bring up the game winner.
- 10:38Yeah, and there were. How about Fred prior to that?
- 10:42Let me get to my favorite Freddie Freeman moment.
- 10:45We got thrown out by Far by by Bob.
- 10:49God, I can't think of his name. The the Grand Slam dude Barger
- 10:54Barger when he got thrown out by Barger on a just a complete
- 10:58bullet from right field. But yeah, the home run just kept
- 11:02going and going. So here's me.
- 11:04Full disclosure, I went to bed like the 14th.
- 11:06Inning and I hit record. That was enough.
- 11:08I yeah, I couldn't take it anymore.
- 11:10I couldn't take it. I knew you were sleeping, Jayce
- 11:12got tweeted at us. So.
- 11:16I get up early, get the coffee, I'm all set to go turn the TV on
- 11:19watching the game. So you don't check your phone?
- 11:21No, the phone's off. Didn't look at sports.
- 11:23Center. Nothing, nothing.
- 11:24Twitter just went right to the game.
- 11:25Newspapers not a thing. Anymore, sadly, but it would
- 11:29have been on the front step. They wouldn't have had it in
- 11:31there though regardless. So Clement flies out in the 17th
- 11:36inning. I think it was Clement and my
- 11:39and stopped. It just stopped.
- 11:41I didn't. Instead of it going 3 hours past
- 11:45the I even thought about it subconsciously.
- 11:48Do I just want to do an hour and a half or three hour and a half
- 11:51is good? Oh, no, yeah.
- 11:53So I then I was, I was clubbed. So I had the 7th and 18th
- 11:55inning. I found out like online right?
- 11:58Which was just. Brutal.
- 11:59Yeah. At that point, did you know what
- 12:02had happened? You still No, I still.
- 12:03So you went searching? Yes.
- 12:05For the late innings. I.
- 12:06Mean, I knew it would. I kind of knew which way was
- 12:09going, right? It's the Dodgers, and you've got
- 12:12Miles Straw and Ernie Clement and Nathan Lucas and Ty France
- 12:17and Hyneman and some guys. I mean, look at full credit to
- 12:24them. They're putting up a hell of a
- 12:25fight. That's a team.
- 12:27That's a baseball team. Tommy.
- 12:28Tommy Edmond was out of his. Mind, he was great.
- 12:30He might have been the. MVPI think he might have been.
- 12:32Well, oh Tommy, right? He's at his own strategy.
- 12:37But other than him, Tommy Edmonds, 2 throws of the relay
- 12:40throw, and I was surprised the Oscar Hernandez was able to
- 12:42field that one out there as cleanly as he was, or as he did
- 12:46rather, because he's kind of an adventure out there.
- 12:48But what a game overall. My God, this one's going to be
- 12:51talked about for a long, long time and understandably so.
- 12:55It was phenomenal. So much theater, so many plays,
- 12:58guys getting thrown out at third, guys getting thrown out
- 13:01at home, pitching changes, long fly balls that ended up being
- 13:06outs. It was one thing after another.
- 13:08Really, really good stuff. All right, coming up on 12/15.
- 13:11I do want to get to the NFL at some point here in the first
- 13:17segment. Now here's a guy we'd be talking
- 13:19a lot to in the weeks ahead. Hello, Wade, looking Bill, how
- 13:21are you? How was your summer?
- 13:24You know, it's really good and it's kind of basketball season,
- 13:27but I want to talk a little bit about baseball.
- 13:32I'm all for it. Hell yeah.
- 13:34So. So I think it was.
- 13:39Sorry. Let me get, I think it was after
- 13:41the game and it was, it was Freddie Freeman's press
- 13:44conference, you know, with the formal.
- 13:47Yeah, in front of all the media. And you're still up at this
- 13:49point? No, I was no, so no, of course
- 13:53not. I you know, I'm like, I went to
- 13:55bed, you know, but just watching the highlights last night, I'm
- 13:59sorry, watching the highlights this morning and they're and
- 14:01they're, and they're interviewing, I think it was
- 14:03Freddie Freeman and they, you're talking about the home run and
- 14:05like you mentioned cannibal getting thrown out and, and he
- 14:09said, can we just pause? Can we just pause and say that
- 14:14our starting pitcher for tonight's game, because this
- 14:17after midnight was on base 9 times today.
- 14:21I mean, and, and when he said that after all Otani's, you
- 14:26know, 10 strikeouts, three home runs in the, in the division
- 14:30series and what he did when he said that, I thought that is the
- 14:33most unbelievable I've ever heard that their starting
- 14:38pitcher for tonight's game was on base 9 times today.
- 14:42It's just, it's just unbelievable what he's doing.
- 14:44Yeah, it really is. It's AI mean people foolishly
- 14:47bet somebody else to win the MVP with the World Series.
- 14:51I was looking for prices. I was too.
- 14:52That's what we. Do right, you don't want to take
- 14:54the favorite, but just. Still early though.
- 14:55Yeah, No, I mean, what? If I hope.
- 14:59Doing a third tonight and gives up five runs.
- 15:01I don't know. I mean, never know.
- 15:03Alejandro, Kurt keeps doing what he's doing.
- 15:06You ready to talk Hawks with us in the weeks ahead?
- 15:08Yes, I think they play a week from tonight.
- 15:11Robert Morris, I think comes into town.
- 15:14So, you know, everyone's cautiously, cautiously.
- 15:17We'll see. We'll see.
- 15:19As are we. Wait.
- 15:21Good to hear from you. I'll reach out next week.
- 15:22Thank you buddy. Great time of year.
- 15:24Thanks. Thanks for all you do.
- 15:26See you guys. Thank you.
- 15:27Bye. Bye.
- 15:27Bye bye Wade looking Bill. He joins Trenton Nye, former
- 15:29Hawk, of course, through a whole bunch of times weekly.
- 15:33Joel brought up, I think a good point on what?
- 15:36Well, he said, you know, is it a good look for baseball just
- 15:39blocking him every time? You know what's a bad look for
- 15:42Mookie Betts? Mookie Betts goes one of eight.
- 15:45Mookie Betts threw out all the extra.
- 15:47And he had a he had an air last night, too.
- 15:49So many opportunities, you know, so many chances.
- 15:52So Mookie Betts, I think it's the worst look for him because
- 15:55they're not scared of Mookie Betts.
- 15:57But that just tells me to go ahead and bet all his player
- 15:59props tonight. Oh, really?
- 16:01This guy's way better than that. He had a bad night last night
- 16:04too, there's no doubt about that.
- 16:06Any update on Springer? I mean, it's got to be he's,
- 16:08he's got. I haven't seen anything this
- 16:10morning. Nathan Lucas won for 8:00.
- 16:14It's not just really bothered. Yeah, miles strong.
- 16:17Miles strong. They're built a little
- 16:20different. Yeah, Ernie Clement, one for 8.
- 16:22Jimenez, one for six. Kirky, they had to take him out.
- 16:26That was the Remy. He's the catcher, right?
- 16:28He's my guy. He's he's built like you.
- 16:31We we are both fire hydrants. Yeah, he's built like you.
- 16:34All right, we're going to talk some NFL.
- 16:36Did you watch much of the Chiefs last night?
- 16:38Had it on to one of the team. In fact, I had the audio on and
- 16:40that's like the crazy play with the should have been ball
- 16:43forward that we were talking about.
- 16:44I had the volume on that on the NFL game.
- 16:47So that was kids are running around and so that's why also
- 16:50some confusion. What is going on here?
- 16:53Like he put his arm up. There's no way he called that a
- 16:54strike, right? Right.
- 16:56Flip it out. To hear Smoltz explain it like
- 16:58that was bad. But yeah, watched a lot of that.
- 17:02Washington had a lot of. Opportunity.
- 17:03You know what? Mariota didn't play poorly, did
- 17:05it? I only saw it during the
- 17:06commercials of the baseball game Woulda saw.
- 17:08That was a woulda shoulda game. I mean, there's there's plenty
- 17:11of that that they were hanging around that first drive.
- 17:13I mean, they marched right down the field and.
- 17:14It's Debo Samuel, right in the face mask.
- 17:17If he wasn't wearing a visor, does that bounce?
- 17:19I just there were a lot of breaks.
- 17:22The Holmes did not play well in the first half.
- 17:24A lot of breaks went Kansas City's way, and though they get
- 17:28the win, you know they move on. Did you see the roughing the
- 17:31passer at the end? I don't think so.
- 17:33It was probably the right call. Oh, you're just going to
- 17:37complain about that again because it's Patrick Holmes, you
- 17:39know? Troy Aikman said it as much.
- 17:42You're going to get a call, especially this quarterback.
- 17:44Well, that's kind of that's. Pretty grumpy anymore.
- 17:46I like Troy. For that I know you.
- 17:49Do take your time out. We will be joined by Frank
- 17:51Schwab, yahoosports.com on the NFL Elliott cleft still to come
- 17:57this hour we'll head to LA catch up with Matt Snyder.
- 17:59I got to read his piece, I bet just pretty good.
- 18:02What, what, what time the media gets out of there?
- 18:04Are they are the media shuttles they're still running, or are
- 18:07they left high and dry at the end of that?
- 18:09Well, because it's not just, well, yeah, Shuttle.
- 18:12Oh, you got a bus driver that's been sitting there?
- 18:13Exactly. What if they've hit overtime?
- 18:15What if they've hit their allotment of hours, whatever it
- 18:17is, and they're searching at, you know, 2/3, 4:00 AM Pacific
- 18:20Time, trying to figure out, hey, who's got over hours left?
- 18:24Who can actually drive this thing?
- 18:25Do they fall asleep? I've never been to Dodger
- 18:28Stadium. The thing I keep hearing every
- 18:30time I've talked to people who have been there, the nightmare
- 18:33that is the parking lot, Yes, the traffic in and out of it
- 18:37looks really cool though. I'd love to get there one day.
- 18:40Probably will at some point. We shall see if they move.
- 18:43Dankity be a whole lot. Easier that would that would
- 18:45work out well. We got retirement right around.
- 18:46The well, yeah, Miller and Condon underway before we get
- 18:49the break. Let's do this time for a

- 19:10See Iowa Sports Radio Network wherever you are listing in the
- 19:13state of Iowa. Glad you are or wherever on the
- 19:16iheart app. Let's get to our friend Frank
- 19:17Schwab. He covers the NFL for
- 19:19yahoosports.com. yahoosports.com and he is with us.
- 19:23Frank, as always, thank you for doing this.
- 19:25Trenton KED, good to speak with you.
- 19:28How are you, Frank? Doing well, doing well.
- 19:31That was you know, and I'm not even talking about University of
- 19:34Wisconsin, but that was 1 bad weekend of football, wasn't it
- 19:37was terrible, yes, just good. I know it's luck of the draw.
- 19:41There's no, you know, nothing to take from it, but boy, it was
- 19:44boring. No, I'm you know when The Jets
- 19:46and the Bengals might have put on the best show, which does
- 19:50have a high bar to begin with and that that might have been
- 19:52it. But I couldn't agree with you
- 19:53more. That's an excellent point.
- 19:55I want to start with the Colts. And are you a believer in this
- 19:59team at this point? A7 and one record says that the.
- 20:02Yeah, they're absolutely legit. They've got the best record in
- 20:05the NFL. A lot of still detractors out
- 20:08there. Where are you?
- 20:09Frank Schwab on the Indianapolis Colts.
- 20:12I guess I'm warming up on them. At some point you just have to
- 20:16tip your cap. And we've had teams, you know,
- 20:19through the years that you know, they're winning one point games
- 20:23or they just catch a a run of a schedule that's just so soft
- 20:26that they're just they they almost can't help but win games.
- 20:29The Colts team is blowing out opponents.
- 20:32They've had quality wins. They've won on a road.
- 20:35They their stats look fine or point differential.
- 20:37Like there's nothing about the Colts that tells you this is
- 20:42going to regress other than what we thought about them before the
- 20:45season, what we thought about Daniel Jones and what we thought
- 20:47about Stike. And maybe everything on the
- 20:49field has been fantastic. It all checks out, right?
- 20:52So I don't know. I do I think that this is some
- 20:56Super Bowl contender? Not really, but it's at some
- 21:01point you just say, well, who's playing better?
- 21:03Who's who do I do? I think the Colts absolutely,
- 21:06positively can't beat. They should have beat the Rams
- 21:08in LA. Like the Rams are a really good
- 21:09football team. They kind of bow race the
- 21:12Chargers. Chargers are a good football
- 21:14team in LA. They beat the Broncos, who I
- 21:17have a lot of respect for. So yeah, I think the Colts are
- 21:20for real. Whether that means they're going
- 21:22to make an AFC championship game or not, I don't know.
- 21:24But I mean it, it seems kind of the floor for this team is about
- 21:28like 12 wins like that. That's kind of a worst case
- 21:30scenario at this point. So Friday into Saturday, we see
- 21:34kind of a converging of your worlds.
- 21:35It's the NFL, but it's also the injury report which goes hand in
- 21:38hand with gambling. And you write a lot about that
- 21:40at Yahoo. Take us in.
- 21:41We'll get to see Lamar Jackson potentially Thursday night on
- 21:44the road against Miami. The well, he was a full
- 21:48participant. Well, we're just, no, he wasn't
- 21:50a full participant for the first team.
- 21:51He was with the scout team. And then of course, he doesn't
- 21:54play against the pairs. Just a lot of layers to that
- 21:56story, Frank. Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:59I mean, there's not honestly that many layers.
- 22:02I think there's one layer and it's just John Harbaugh and the
- 22:04Ravens lied. That's and they got caught.
- 22:06Like, OK, Like I don't buy this in any way, shape or form.
- 22:11This Harbaugh. Like, oh, we just made a
- 22:13mistake. We didn't know even if that's
- 22:16true, but John Harbaugh's coach, what, 20 years by this point,
- 22:20like 1520, whatever is banned, that's not even an excuse.
- 22:24Like this is not some rookie head coach who was like, oh, I
- 22:27didn't realize that the injury report was that way.
- 22:29You know better. And it was clear what they were
- 22:32doing. They were just keeping it a
- 22:34secret for the Bears to. I mean, I don't think there's
- 22:36anything nefarious going on as far as gambling or anything like
- 22:38that goes, but on a week the the NBA was on the headlines for
- 22:43insider information like you could and people say like, who
- 22:47cares? Yeah, Andrew was just for
- 22:48gamblers, blah blah. Well, the reason it matters is
- 22:51because everybody in that building knew Lamar Jackson
- 22:54wasn't going to play. Everybody, every player,
- 22:57probably support staff, coaching staff, let's say conservatively,
- 23:02100 people knew Lamar Jackson was not going to play in that
- 23:05game pretty clearly, right? So all it takes is calling up
- 23:09your buddy and being like, hey, you know, you can get the Bears
- 23:12right now at 6 + 6 1/2. That line's going to drop to -1
- 23:161/2 on Saturday. That's insider information.
- 23:19That's what we're talking about. That's why these NBA guys are in
- 23:21trouble. So, so and or props or whatever,
- 23:25whatever bets you want to make against Lamar Jackson, once you
- 23:29know he is not going to play and again, the whole building knew
- 23:32that on Friday, it just becomes a fiasco.
- 23:36And this whole thing, I think Atlanta Falcons did the same
- 23:39thing. They're not getting enough
- 23:40attention for it because there's this thing that happens at the
- 23:44Ravens just outright lied about the whole like full participant
- 23:47practice. The Falcons just played the game
- 23:49of limited, limited, limited. His list is questionable on
- 23:53Friday and then we'll rule him out on Saturday.
- 23:55Nothing changed on Saturday. Michael Pennock wasn't going to
- 23:58play. Like they didn't wake up on
- 23:59Saturday and say, actually, Michael Pennock looked really
- 24:02bad in practice the other day. No, they knew all week he wasn't
- 24:04going to play. That's that those kind of
- 24:06shenanigans can't happen anymore either.
- 24:08Like what the NFL gotten business gambling, which is
- 24:11fine. You know, I like that world.
- 24:13You like that world. We're all in it.
- 24:15But part of the responsibility then is there are no more injury
- 24:19reports shenanigans. There are no opportunities for
- 24:22somebody in the Atlanta Falcons building to say, hey, I watched
- 24:26Kirk Cousins take first team reps the whole week.
- 24:28Kirk's starting in this game is not Michael Pennix.
- 24:31And that's again, insider information that they can't
- 24:34happen when you start playing games with the injury report.
- 24:36Sunday Night Football, I went into it as kind of a, you know,
- 24:39I wanted both teams to show me which one was for real because I
- 24:42didn't believe in the Steelers and I wasn't sure about the
- 24:45Green Bay Packers. Yeah, I saw Week 1 and that
- 24:47obviously was was eye opening. Love was unbelievable in this,
- 24:51particularly in the second-half of that game.
- 24:52What did you learn in Sunday Night Football when it comes to
- 24:55both of the participants? Yeah, very interesting because
- 25:00you're right. Like I mean, from through half
- 25:03time of the Sunday night game, I just kept saying to myself,
- 25:06where is that? Where is this Packers team?
- 25:08For the first two weeks when I was sitting, I was pounding the
- 25:11table for them saying this is the best team in football.
- 25:13They're number one of my power rankings.
- 25:14They are easily the best team. That team hasn't shown up since
- 25:17the middle of September and now we're struggling against the
- 25:20Steelers team. Well, I'll be honest, I have no
- 25:22respect for the Steelers. I, I don't think Steelers are
- 25:24good football team. I I what do the Steelers do?
- 25:27Well, their defense is really, really old and slow and they're
- 25:30just getting torched by bad quarterbacks.
- 25:31Not that Jordan loves a bad quarterback, but we give up 20
- 25:34straight completions at home. That's just a bad defense
- 25:37offensively. There's no explosive plays
- 25:39except once in a while DK Metcalf gets free.
- 25:42Not like they have Jonathan, like, Jalen Warren playing well,
- 25:44but he's not like, is he Jonathan Taylor or anything like
- 25:46that? So I don't think the Steelers do
- 25:48anything well, and I don't think they're going to win that
- 25:50division. And yet the Packers were
- 25:52struggling badly with them at halftime, and then all of a
- 25:56sudden, Packers showed up. And yeah, I don't know if that's
- 25:58necessarily a reflection on the Steelers or the Packers, but it
- 26:02was good to see from the Packers to to reach that level again
- 26:06where you're like, yes, for half of a football.
- 26:08I saw that team that I was so high on for the first two weeks
- 26:11of the season. We'll see if they can keep this
- 26:12going because every week they play with their food.
- 26:15Every week it's like, oh, let's we need a fourth down conversion
- 26:18to beat the Arizona Cardinals like that.
- 26:20That doesn't scream to me that you're one of the best teams in
- 26:22football. But you look at the roster, you
- 26:24look at their high end performances and you could see
- 26:27it. I just want to see it over and
- 26:29over and over and more consistently.
- 26:31That's what great teams do. That's the next thing for the
- 26:33Green Bay Packers to not just do it for a game.
- 26:36Two games, 1/2, but for a month straight just beat the heck out
- 26:40of opponents. That's what we need to see next
- 26:42from the Packers. North of our border, the Vikings
- 26:44will turn back to JJ McCarthy after that weird ankle injury
- 26:48that lingered for a long time. We find out Carson Wentz has
- 26:51been playing with the dislocated shoulder on top of it, then a
- 26:55torn labrum and fractured socket that happens in the game over
- 26:58the weekend. It's just one after another.
- 27:00And it feels like there's been a lot of weird injury stuff with
- 27:02the Vikings. I don't think this is a KOC
- 27:04problem or maybe even an organizational.
- 27:06It almost seems like might be a team doctor that might be
- 27:09getting in some trouble here. What a weird, weird situation
- 27:11with Minnesota. And I guess we'll get to see now
- 27:13with JJ McCarthy, because they have to.
- 27:16Yeah, and that's the thing. And in some ways, and we talked
- 27:20about this on podcasts with Andrew Siciliano yesterday,
- 27:24Inside Coverage podcast, that in some ways, I think this takes
- 27:27the pressure off of JJ McCarthy because there's nobody over her
- 27:30shoulder anymore. And I get that like, you know, I
- 27:33it, it would be, it would be a change.
- 27:36McCarthy gets hurt. They're they're in a world,
- 27:38they're in world trouble. Like they got to go to, you
- 27:41know, to Max Bosner, who, you know, undrafted guy, who knows,
- 27:46hey, I look good in preseason, but what does that mean?
- 27:48But right now, performance wise, JJ McCarthy can go out there and
- 27:52make some mistakes and not feel like anybody's going to be like,
- 27:54well, maybe you should turn the Carson Wentz.
- 27:56That option is off the table now.
- 27:57So I think in some ways this helps McCarthy that he there's
- 28:01no pressure on him to to that he's going to get benched.
- 28:04There's pressure on every NFL quarterback, but that he's going
- 28:07to get benched or Carson wins or anything like this is going to
- 28:09happen. Just go play with a free mind.
- 28:11Whatever mistakes you're making, not going to yank for for Max
- 28:14Brosner. And so we'll see what JJ
- 28:17McCarthy has, but this Viking season slipping away quick.
- 28:20It is really, really in in dire straits right now.
- 28:23You look at their schedule coming up and it's like, well,
- 28:25who do you beat? I think they got Lions this
- 28:27week, if I'm not mistaken. I know the Packers are coming
- 28:29up. Yeah, the Packers are coming up
- 28:31really soon. Like, they have a lot of tough
- 28:34games coming up. And all of a sudden you're like,
- 28:36I don't see really the path out of this for the Vikings and
- 28:39let's change it. Regard these just awesome, which
- 28:41could be I mean, but I I keep saying Bonex started last
- 28:44season, his work year. He was terrible for the first
- 28:47moment and then he turned it on and became really good with a
- 28:49good coach. Well, that's what J has too.
- 28:51So. But but right now, yeah, that
- 28:54Carson Wentz kind of being done for the season.
- 28:57Now have a look at JJ McCarthy and say, hey, Kate, all right,
- 29:00let's see what you got. And I think that's a good thing
- 29:01for the Minnesota Vikings, that over the long term.
- 29:03Yeah, they have to do it last thing, Frank, a week.
- 29:05Today is the NFL trade deadline. What are you expecting?
- 29:09Are there going to be any big names like a Crosby, like a
- 29:12Garrett, maybe a receiver or two?
- 29:14An active tread deadline mean used to come and go like it was
- 29:17nothing there about back in the day.
- 29:19Now it's seemingly there. Might there, there, there might
- 29:22be some moves made. What are you anticipating?
- 29:25Yeah, I think it's usually pretty quiet.
- 29:28We make a big deal out of whoever gets traded because it's
- 29:31fun and we like talking about trades and whatnot.
- 29:32But it's usually like Amari Cooper goes with the Bills and
- 29:35he ends up with like 100 yards like those type of trades like.
- 29:39And so I think there's going to be some movement.
- 29:41I think Jacoby Myers will get moved like moves like that.
- 29:45Reese Halls very interesting because why would The Jets hold
- 29:47on to him unless you're going to sign into an extension, what's
- 29:50the point? So it gets get something out of
- 29:52him while he can right now the one that the one that I'm really
- 29:55kind of interested in is Trey Hendrickson because I think a
- 29:58Bengal like on one hand, the Bengals can look and say AC N
- 30:02stinks. Why can't we jump back into
- 30:04this? But I think when you're at home
- 30:06and you get torture, I think 500 yards by The Jets and Justin
- 30:09Fields, like you just realize we're not a very good football
- 30:12team. What are we doing?
- 30:13Like let's Trey, Trey Hendrickson get something for
- 30:16him while we can. So I think that's the prudent
- 30:19movement. I don't know if the Bengals are
- 30:20necessarily going to do it. I don't necessarily know if the
- 30:23price they're asking everybody's going to pay that.
- 30:25So I think he's the most interesting name.
- 30:27That's the most interesting situation.
- 30:29I think the second most interesting situation is just
- 30:31what do the 49ers do? Because I can see it both ways.
- 30:35The 49ers defense is good, not going to be good.
- 30:38They just gave up 475 yards of the Texans who didn't even have
- 30:40Nico columns. That offense, that Texans
- 30:42offense has been bad most of the season and they torch the 49ers
- 30:45who are without Bosa, without Warner.
- 30:47So you're sitting there, you're John Lynch, you're Kyle
- 30:49Shanahan, you're saying on one hand you're like, we're five and
- 30:52three. We have a roster of guys who the
- 30:54windows closing soon, Kittle, Trent Williams, McCaffrey, all
- 30:57these guys are going to be gone very soon.
- 31:01We need to chase this thing. On the other hand, you're saying
- 31:04is 1 move really going to change the trajectory of our season,
- 31:07make us a Super Bowl contender now we're giving up future draft
- 31:09picks and we might be setting back our inevitable kind of
- 31:13reload. I don't know what the 49ers do
- 31:15and I'm fascinated to see how they approach the trade deadline
- 31:18because I can see from both ways if they were like we're all in
- 31:20because this group, we don't have much time left with all of
- 31:23them. We need to maximize this now.
- 31:25We're five and three. We're not in a bad position
- 31:26record wise. I can understand that.
- 31:28I can also understand the kind of stamp Pat and say we're not
- 31:32fixing all of our problems with one trade.
- 31:35Trey Henderson doesn't even fix everything.
- 31:37So I'm very interested to see what the 49ers do.
- 31:39Excellent point on the Niners. Something to watch, no doubt.
- 31:41Frank, thanks for doing this. We'll talk to you in the weeks
- 31:43ahead. Thank you, Frank Schwab.
- 31:46Absolutely. Appreciate it.
- 31:46Yep. Good to talk to you.
- 31:47Frank Schwab, yahoosports.com, as we check in in the NFL.
- 31:51That's a really good point. But where, where do they go?
- 31:54Do you think they're a Super Bowl team?
- 31:55No, I don't either. They're five and two, but I
- 31:58don't think they are. We'll take a time out.
- 32:00We'll talk Hawks with Elliot Cleft, get some Intel into the
- 32:04secret scrimmage against Texas Tech football stuff as well.
- 32:08Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:11I'm Millory convin welcome back. Coming up on well, it's just
- 32:14past 1245. Matt Snyder from lacbssports.com
- 32:19kicks off hour number two on MLB.
- 32:22Elliott Cleft standing by in Iowa City.
- 32:24Both coordinators meeting the press here.
- 32:26Coming up at the top of the hour.
- 32:27We get Elliott for a few minutes in advance of that Elliott
- 32:30Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on football momentarily.
- 32:33Just just pick your brain. If you know anything pursuant to
- 32:37the scrimmage against Texas Tech that was played last week, any
- 32:41Intel come your way on that game?
- 32:43What stood out? What they you know what maybe
- 32:45worrisome? What have what have you gleaned
- 32:48from people you've spoken with? Sure.
- 32:51So mostly our Sean Bach got got that for us over at Hawkeye
- 32:55Insider. Of course, Sean covers
- 32:57recruiting for basketball, football as well for us.
- 33:00But Tech, which not a huge deal considering they are the
- 33:06preseason #10 team in the country have a lot more
- 33:09continuity than this team considering all the moves with
- 33:12the transfer portal and and all that.
- 33:14Of course, that's the team that Drake sounds like Iowa had some
- 33:19troubleshooting from deep. Still played a decent amount of
- 33:23young guys and you know, as much as we can get from something
- 33:28like that without being there. Sounds like, yeah, they
- 33:30struggled to shoot from three, which is something that wouldn't
- 33:33expect from this team considering Bennett starts
- 33:35Brendan Housing on the roster and you've got some other young
- 33:38guys that can can fill it up from three.
- 33:40So yeah, you know, maybe, maybe some concern there, I guess.
- 33:44But yeah, all things considered, it is still early.
- 33:48They are playing Robert Morris for a reason next week.
- 33:51Get get some, get get some things going.
- 33:54But yeah, it dropped a loss. But again, not not a ton of
- 33:57concern right now. Yeah.
- 33:59And they'll have an opportunity to kind of ramp up into the
- 34:01schedule. Here, is it more offensive or
- 34:04defense? You mentioned mentioned the
- 34:05shooting woes there and and that's a part of it, obviously.
- 34:08What about on the defensive side of the ball?
- 34:10What have you heard there? One thing that I did here, it
- 34:12was an improvement from what they saw against Saint Louis,
- 34:14but certainly not I don't think we're Ben McCollum and that
- 34:17staff want them to be on the defensive end of the floor.
- 34:20Right, Yeah. And I, I would imagine you're
- 34:22still working on some some things in terms of communication
- 34:25rotations, how you want to attack a pick and roll and such.
- 34:29And of course they don't scout, you know, scrimmages.
- 34:31So that has to the defensive effort and and scheme is going
- 34:37to be contingent on who you're playing, when you're playing,
- 34:40where you're playing. And you just don't know exactly
- 34:42what everything's going to look like when you're facing the team
- 34:45in a scrimmage. So presuming, and of course, you
- 34:47know, I'm not saying that that fitness isn't there is a
- 34:51problem, but who knows, maybe it is something to to continue to
- 34:55work on as the the season goes along.
- 34:58But thank you. But anyway, just something
- 35:03something to maybe think about right now.
- 35:05I mean, team still hasn't played a full 5 on five actual game.
- 35:08So just something of note for now.
- 35:11But yeah, again, I the last thing I'm I'm feeling right now
- 35:15is concerned. Let's talk football, Trent, you
- 35:18done basketball wise. Just let's go back to Saturday
- 35:20night. Course, they're off this week,
- 35:23they've won their last three and just a complete pasting of the
- 35:26Gophers. Your take away from watching
- 35:28Gronowski, what he did, Kumari Moulton Weijin continues to, you
- 35:33know, stake his claim amongst the top punt returners or kick
- 35:36returners in Hawkeye history. Your thoughts on the 41 to three
- 35:40win over the Gophers? Yeah, to me, it's it's just a
- 35:45complete actually what Kirk's parents want from his football
- 35:49team. Dominance in all three phases is
- 35:51what we saw on Saturday against Minnesota from, like you said,
- 35:55region. Gronowski, the passing attack,
- 35:57the run game defence is awesome. You get that interception from
- 36:00Zach Lummer. I'm assuming you guys know this,
- 36:03but in case anybody's listening who might not that was there
- 36:07were two touchdowns by two kids from the same high school in
- 36:10northwest Iowa on Saturday between Zach Luttmer and Reese
- 36:14Vanderzee, both from central Lyon, George Little Rock of
- 36:17power up there in northwest Iowa.
- 36:19So it's pretty cool. I I I'd be curious to to find
- 36:22out the last time that happened that, you know, haven't been an
- 36:26OABCIG graduate myself. I'm pretty proud of of what
- 36:30Cooper was able to do and and his time Cooper de Jean was able
- 36:33to do here, but got got to be proud up there if you're from
- 36:36central Lion. But anyway, I'm.
- 36:37Glad you brought that up. I did not know that I'm.
- 36:39I'm glad you mentioned that. There you go.
- 36:41Well, all things considered, just just about as perfect game
- 36:44as as one can have in in in that moment.
- 36:48Of course, things to clean up. I'm I'm sure Mark, in my
- 36:51opinion, Mark has still been a little bit late on some throws,
- 36:54some overthrows. You want to clean that up.
- 36:57He's hoping he can be 100% by Oregon and of course that that
- 37:00would hopefully, you know, change some things on the
- 37:02throws. Kamari Moulton, man, he is just
- 37:05like 1 shoestring tackle away from a big game or from a big
- 37:08gain or, or a touchdown every game it seems like.
- 37:11And and and multiple times and going back and reviewing the
- 37:14film. That was one thing.
- 37:16The other thing to mention about Lutmer too, is Phil Parker
- 37:20showing off some of his, his knowledge on the defensive side
- 37:23of the, the field when they're running a traditional 4/3 and
- 37:26they don't have a cash out there, they've got 3
- 37:28linebackers. Parker's putting Zach Lummer at
- 37:31cornerback out there with TJ Hall.
- 37:33So it's, it's a move to keep one of your best players on the
- 37:35field. And, and I noticed that in the
- 37:37rewatch. I thought that was, that was
- 37:39awesome. And, and to, you know, mention
- 37:41the other Central Lion player, Reese had that awesome catch in
- 37:44the corner of the end zone. I just don't see anybody else on
- 37:47this roster doing that right now, maybe other than Dayton
- 37:49Howard, who wasn't available. But getting Reefs back is huge
- 37:53and and seems like he's really hit his stride now.
- 37:55You know, this defense was frankly for Iowa standards bad
- 37:58in the first month of the season.
- 37:59You go back to what we saw, different portions of it.
- 38:02Even against Albany, there were stretches.
- 38:04But here they are and they're playing at an elite level once
- 38:07again. One thing that that I was
- 38:09reminded of, Phil Parker talked about maybe having to change the
- 38:12some things up because of the way that they were tackling
- 38:14early in the season. Maybe follow that one away for
- 38:17next season. But what has it been?
- 38:19What what do you think is the key to this defense seemingly
- 38:21turning around and and becoming once again an elite level
- 38:24defense? I I think chemistry and having
- 38:28played actual games on the field together is something that's
- 38:32incredibly underrated right now because while this team had
- 38:36there were veterans, they weren't experienced, if that
- 38:39makes sense. Because you go down the line
- 38:41with Jackson, Rex Roth, now Jayden Montgomery, who has been
- 38:44awesome in, in stepping into that Mike linebacker roll,
- 38:48Carson Shire, then to Cohen entering her and and, and, and
- 38:53like as Zach Lummer lumber got to play a little bit last year
- 38:56and and got probably more experience than a red shirt
- 38:58freshman typically does. But now they're starting to find
- 39:01some cohesiveness. They're starting to obviously
- 39:03turn the ball over. That's that's massive.
- 39:06And the the execution I think is there.
- 39:09And honestly, like Montgomery has been a huge part of that.
- 39:12His ability to read and react, I think has been better than
- 39:15Jayden Harrells was. His ability to just make the
- 39:17play when it's presented to him, trust his eyes, trust his his
- 39:21film study has that's been massive.
- 39:24And you know, another thing, I think Xavier Wampa has really
- 39:28started to fill his his shoes in that free safety spot.
- 39:31He is laying the wood out there on some of these hits.
- 39:35And and TJ Hall, I I mean, he was great from the beginning of
- 39:37the season, but he's really just elite finally got that first
- 39:40interception. Desean Lee is playing well.
- 39:44Yeah. I mean, and I think that it's
- 39:47silly. It's kind of coach speak, but
- 39:49but confidence is a big part of that too.
- 39:51Like they've been able to hold these these pretty, pretty good
- 39:55teams to incredibly like Minnesota could do nothing,
- 40:00nothing against Iowa on Saturday.
- 40:02The only reason they got in Iowa territory for that field goal
- 40:05was 3 penalties. That's the only reason it should
- 40:07have been 41 zero. This defense is playing like one
- 40:10of the best in the country right now and you know, at the
- 40:13beginning of the season. And it would have been very
- 40:15easy, especially with the way Dante Moore started the year, to
- 40:18say up that's another blowout top ten team coming to Kennick.
- 40:21They're going to, I mean, you know, a lot of these games,
- 40:23these top 25 games haven't been at Kennick, but it was just a
- 40:27feel of Oregon's going to come to town and and beat the crap
- 40:29out of them. And you don't feel that way
- 40:30anymore at all. And a lot of it is because of
- 40:32this defense. Wish it was this week.
- 40:34That's my only. Yeah.
- 40:35Keep that momentum going, Elliot.
- 40:37Cliff, Elliot, thanks for doing this.
- 40:38So we appreciate it. We will talk to you next week.
- 40:41Thank you, Elliot. Sounds good.
- 40:43Thanks guys. Yep, thank you.

- 40:49Arizona State. Jeff Sims gets the call, so.
- 40:54Campbell was pumping some sunshine up as.
- 40:56He ever coach speak? Uh huh.
- 41:00Hour 2. We'll head to LA to kick it off.
