Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schrager is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio.
- 0:24Speaker 2: What's Up, everybody, Welcome to the Season with Peter Schreger.
- 0:27Speaker 2: This is the Combine Week episode, an annual tradition, and
- 0:31Speaker 2: as we record this, it is Thursday morning of Combine Week.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Let me give you a quick schedule of events. Thursday
- 0:38Speaker 2: afternoon likely when this thing posts, the defensive lineman and
- 0:43Speaker 2: the linebackers are all going to be doing their workouts
- 0:45Speaker 2: in Indianapolis. And on Friday, Friday night, we get our
- 0:49Speaker 2: defensive backs and our tight ends doing their drills and
- 0:52Speaker 2: their forties. And then Saturday is the big one. Saturday
- 0:55Speaker 2: is when you get your running backs, your wide receivers,
- 0:58Speaker 2: and then the primetime event will be the quarterbacks throwing
- 1:01Speaker 2: in the late afternoon early evening. And then on Sunday
- 1:04Speaker 2: we wrap it up with offensive linemen. So you have Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 1:08Speaker 2: That is the schedule. I am currently in New York
- 1:12Speaker 2: City right now, and I'm with Jason English and Aaron
- 1:16Speaker 2: wan Kaufman are two fine producers and executives from iHeartRadio
- 1:20Speaker 2: or in New York City. But my schedule has been crazy.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So I flew to Indianapolis Monday, was there for Tuesday
- 1:28Speaker 2: Morning Good Morning Football, Wednesday Morning Good Morning Football, flew
- 1:32Speaker 2: back last night, got back here. I'm doing Good Morning
- 1:36Speaker 2: Football in studio Thursday, which was just now, and Friday
- 1:40Speaker 2: to promote and to preview the combine. We're talking in
- 1:44Speaker 2: depth analysis of all the different position groups. Who you
- 1:46Speaker 2: should be looking for. Me talking about Rooke Aroo, the
- 1:50Speaker 2: Clemson defensive tackle who I think is going to light
- 1:52Speaker 2: up the combine in a few hours. And on Friday's show,
- 1:55Speaker 2: we'll be previewing all the quarterbacks, all the wide receivers,
- 1:57Speaker 2: all the running backs, and all the offensive linemen. Specifically
- 2:01Speaker 2: the guys that I want to see Joe Alt, the
- 2:03Speaker 2: big offensive tackle for the Notre Dame fight, and Irish
- 2:06Speaker 2: and then Fuaga out of Oregon State, who I'm told
- 2:10Speaker 2: is already skyrocketing up boards based on his interviews. He's
- 2:13Speaker 2: been awesome in interviews. All right, So I'll be there
- 2:16Speaker 2: in Indianapolis because I'm flying out tomorrow. After the show,
- 2:19Speaker 2: I will be on the broadcast as a viewer and listener.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Tip to you if you put on NFL Network anytime
- 2:25Speaker 2: after like three pm We're just going to be wall
- 2:28Speaker 2: to wall drills, analysis stories. My role, I'll be chiming
- 2:34Speaker 2: in with what gms are telling me about these prospects.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I've got a notebook full of all their names and
- 2:39Speaker 2: all the nuggets that I have on each one of
- 2:41Speaker 2: these guys, and also how they're interviewing and what they're
- 2:43Speaker 2: doing in the interview rooms. But my work is kind
- 2:46Speaker 2: of already done because I had a wild forty eight
- 2:49Speaker 2: hours there. Guys. Can I go through my schedule? Eric,
- 2:52Speaker 2: have you been to the combine before. I've never been
- 2:54Speaker 2: to the compa, So I kind of laid it out
- 2:56Speaker 2: in my monologue last week, but I'll do it again.
- 2:59Speaker 2: The drills are like the shiny object that everyone looks
- 3:02Speaker 2: at because it's obviously on NFL Network and it's broadcast,
- 3:06Speaker 2: and we're gonna be looking back at forty times for
- 3:09Speaker 2: the next three three weeks, you know, right up until
- 3:11Speaker 2: free agency and draft. But the real work is done Monday, Tuesday,
- 3:17Speaker 2: Wednesday before the drills because so many coaches, GMS, team presidents,
- 3:23Speaker 2: team pr staffs, agents, and fellow media personalities all descend
- 3:29Speaker 2: upon Indianapolis. And I'd say there's four main restaurants that
- 3:34Speaker 2: everybody goes to at night. Those restaurants are Saint Almos,
- 3:37Speaker 2: which is the classic with the horse radish that'll drive
- 3:39Speaker 2: you nuts, Harry and Izzy's, which is right next door
- 3:42Speaker 2: to Saint Elmos. So geographically, if you want to do both,
- 3:46Speaker 2: you could pop into Saint Almos, walk down what feels
- 3:49Speaker 2: to be like the skinniest little hallway, which is where
- 3:52Speaker 2: their hostess stand is, and then they lead you into
- 3:55Speaker 2: all these different dining rooms. Harry and Iss is right
- 3:57Speaker 2: next to that. They also have that insane horse radish.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I wonder what the deal is because they have the
- 4:03Speaker 2: same horse ratish, but it feels like they're like an
- 4:05Speaker 2: alf branch of Sainte feels like the guy from Saint
- 4:08Speaker 2: Elmo's left and joined and started this thing because their
- 4:10Speaker 2: menu also has pizza and has chicken and has like
- 4:14Speaker 2: fish and they have an insane cocktail you know, shrimp
- 4:18Speaker 2: deal over there too. So those are those two those
- 4:19Speaker 2: are in the same little block. Then you've got this
- 4:23Speaker 2: new one named Tony's, which is kind of like an
- 4:25Speaker 2: upscale like more of like a oh, I don't know,
- 4:28Speaker 2: like a Delfrisco's. Feel like it's like a little bit
- 4:30Speaker 2: more modern it's not an old school steakhouse. And there's
- 4:34Speaker 2: a whole group of guys that go over there and
- 4:36Speaker 2: gals that go there, and that's any night you can
- 4:38Speaker 2: go to Tony's and you can see people, all right.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And then the fourth one is Prime forty seven. Prime
- 4:45Speaker 2: forty seven is where you end the night. Prime forty
- 4:47Speaker 2: seven is a steakhouse in name, but I have to
- 4:50Speaker 2: think they're pulling in hundreds of thousands of dollars each
- 4:53Speaker 2: night after ten o'clock because that bar is everyone. That
- 4:56Speaker 2: is where everyone descends upon. Now, in the corner table
- 4:59Speaker 2: at Prime forty seven, he is a guy named Bob Lamont.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Bab Lamont is seventy nine years old. He is an
- 5:06Speaker 2: eight agent to other coaches. He's Andy Reid's agent. He
- 5:09Speaker 2: was Mike holmgren's agent. He's Sean mcvay's agent. He's Zach
- 5:13Speaker 2: Taylor's agent. He's Howie Rosman's agent. He's the agent for
- 5:17Speaker 2: most of these guys and has been doing it for years.
- 5:20Speaker 2: And he just has what seems to be an open
- 5:23Speaker 2: tab for any of his friends or any of his
- 5:25Speaker 2: clients to come by, kiss the ring, say hello, and
- 5:28Speaker 2: it becomes this incredible meeting spot at the end of
- 5:31Speaker 2: the night where everyone goes. It kind of filters in
- 5:34Speaker 2: to just say hello to Bob, but to also maybe
- 5:36Speaker 2: get a free vodka soda if you want. With great regret,
- 5:39Speaker 2: I did not see bab Lamont this year. Didn't make
- 5:41Speaker 2: it there. I was in bed on Tuesday at like
- 5:44Speaker 2: nine point thirty. He and I did texting all this stuff.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Didn't see him, didn't go to his table. However, I
- 5:48Speaker 2: did pop into Prime forty seven and it was alive
- 5:51Speaker 2: as always. But let me give you my little schedule
- 5:54Speaker 2: and what I banged out while I was in there.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Landed the plane at four point thirty on Monday, and
- 5:59Speaker 2: we had a five o'clock reservation at Saint Elmo's and
- 6:03Speaker 2: that was with here's the table, Andy Reid, Steve Spagnolo,
- 6:10Speaker 2: Brett Veach, GM of the Chiefs, and then their entire
- 6:13Speaker 2: front office staff, and Ted Cruz, who is their their
- 6:17Speaker 2: public relations in Persario. I was sitting in between Spags
- 6:22Speaker 2: and Andy. They left me a seat open, which was
- 6:24Speaker 2: the ultimate honor. And across from Veach, two hour dinner awesome.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Andy Reid, does he order the cheeseburger. There's no cheeseburger.
- 6:32Speaker 2: On the menu at say, and almost goes with a
- 6:35Speaker 2: porterhouse and they say green beans or fries. Andy Reid says,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I'll splurge. We'll go for the fries. I was not
- 6:41Speaker 2: surprised by that decision. Watching Andy eat that cocktail shrimp
- 6:47Speaker 2: with the horseradish and make like a wincing face. I
- 6:50Speaker 2: think that's like an image I'll never never lose and
- 6:52Speaker 2: I'll always have in my head. Andy's so great. He
- 6:57Speaker 2: was asking about me and my family. He's asking about
- 6:58Speaker 2: Good morning football. He's talking about what time you got
- 7:01Speaker 2: to wake up? All right, and you live in New
- 7:02Speaker 2: York City and I was. And then we went into
- 7:04Speaker 2: like the details, like we had a really really in
- 7:07Speaker 2: depth conversation and a heart to heart really with Spags
- 7:10Speaker 2: and Andy. And we used a podcast from last week
- 7:13Speaker 2: as kind of a jumping off point, and I asked
- 7:15Speaker 2: about leadership and what they see in Patrick and Andy
- 7:18Speaker 2: was talking about, you know, the drafting of Mahomes. Everyone
- 7:24Speaker 2: now you know it is what it is. He's like,
- 7:25Speaker 2: but at the time that was such a delicate situation.
- 7:27Speaker 2: John Dorsey was a GM They had just paid Alex Smith,
- 7:31Speaker 2: and he says Patrick came in with the right attitude
- 7:33Speaker 2: of I'm not looking to usurpu, I'm not looking to
- 7:35Speaker 2: take you over, but also Alex Smith at the right
- 7:37Speaker 2: attitude of yeah, of course I could be threatened, and
- 7:40Speaker 2: of course this could be a really uncomfortable situation. When
- 7:42Speaker 2: Alex Smith say what you want about he did with Kaepernick,
- 7:46Speaker 2: and he did it with him, took him right under
- 7:48Speaker 2: his wing and showed him everything he possibly could and
- 7:50Speaker 2: paid it forward. And he says that was the atmosphere
- 7:53Speaker 2: that we want in Kansas City to which led to
- 7:57Speaker 2: drafting all of these young players and having them succeed.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I thought what Spag said last week on this podcast
- 8:02Speaker 2: was so cool when he was talking about how he
- 8:04Speaker 2: had so much trust in third year linebacker Nick Bolton,
- 8:08Speaker 2: and it was that trust and that implicit like, hey,
- 8:11Speaker 2: if Bolton says I'm all in and everyone else is
- 8:13Speaker 2: gonna be all in, we're gonna be in the right page.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And then that third and four blitz McDuffie goes and
- 8:17Speaker 2: it's becoss Bolton nodded his head. A lot of that
- 8:20Speaker 2: stuff was there, and then the conversation took this like
- 8:22Speaker 2: really interesting turn, which is what I think the beauty
- 8:25Speaker 2: of the combine is Brett Vieach starts talking about how
- 8:29Speaker 2: he's really really upset that he's not gonna be able
- 8:32Speaker 2: to get to the Butler Saint John's game, which is
- 8:35Speaker 2: in Indianapolis, and the same butler Saint John's who gives
- 8:38Speaker 2: us butler Verus Saint John's. And he's like, have always
- 8:41Speaker 2: wanted to meet Patino, And so then we start talking
- 8:44Speaker 2: about Patino, and then it gets into the thing and
- 8:46Speaker 2: like Andy's like, well, you know, Patino had Billy Donovan
- 8:48Speaker 2: back at Providence, and I'm like, yeah, I know that.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And then I'm like, then he goes to Kentucky, and
- 8:52Speaker 2: I start talking about Patino's Kentucky teams and and and
- 8:55Speaker 2: having Jamal Nashburn and Derek Phelps in the early ones
- 8:58Speaker 2: and Jamel Martinez and then I they're like, Schreger, you
- 9:01Speaker 2: know way too much about the nineties Kentucky Wildcats, And
- 9:04Speaker 2: I'm like, wholl when you're talking about Tony Dell and
- 9:06Speaker 2: you're talking about you know, Ron Mercer and my favorite player,
- 9:10Speaker 2: Antoine Walker doing the shimmy, and then they're talking about
- 9:13Speaker 2: how you know he his story obviously you know he
- 9:17Speaker 2: wins the championship in Kentucky wins a championship at Louisville,
- 9:20Speaker 2: and then his whole career is over based on what
- 9:22Speaker 2: happens in that Applebee's and I don't need to go
- 9:24Speaker 2: through a whole detail. But then he's coaching overseas and
- 9:28Speaker 2: he's coaching at IONA, and now he's finally back at
- 9:30Speaker 2: Saint John's and in the last ten days, Rick Patina
- 9:33Speaker 2: and like beaches laughing. He's like, you know, Rick Patino,
- 9:36Speaker 2: choose out the Saint John's players, choose out the program
- 9:39Speaker 2: basically says these guys aren't. And then they rattled off
- 9:41Speaker 2: two big victories. They beat Craton, which is a ranked team,
- 9:44Speaker 2: and they blew out Georgetown. And I'm talking and Andy
- 9:47Speaker 2: Reid's like, you know, that's a real rule the dice.
- 9:49Speaker 2: You can lose your whole locker room. He's like, what
- 9:51Speaker 2: a that's at a crossroads of a season. That's a
- 9:54Speaker 2: coach deliberately doing that. And I'm like, wow, to see
- 9:56Speaker 2: another legendary coach talk about another legendary coach, and you
- 10:01Speaker 2: know that decision to publicly get to a podium and
- 10:04Speaker 2: to trash his players, that's not him just doing that
- 10:08Speaker 2: willy nilly. There's a design there and that is Andy
- 10:10Speaker 2: Reid respecting Rick Patinos. I don't know why would have
- 10:14Speaker 2: done it, but that's what he did. We talked about
- 10:17Speaker 2: the Taylor Swift situation. We talked about Travis Kelcey. We
- 10:20Speaker 2: talked about a lot and gosh, the love that that
- 10:24Speaker 2: these guys have for each other and the pride that
- 10:26Speaker 2: they have for those players. It was really cool. And
- 10:29Speaker 2: at the end of the meal, Brett Beach says, let
- 10:31Speaker 2: me take a photo of U spags and read. I said, Okay,
- 10:35Speaker 2: takes a photo. I look great. I'm sucking in my gut,
- 10:39Speaker 2: sucking in so hard. Andy looks good. I take the photo,
- 10:43Speaker 2: and over the weekend I made a conscious decision. I said,
- 10:46Speaker 2: I'm going to start in my Instagram account. I've never
- 10:49Speaker 2: been on Instagram before. Aaron, you're probably in college at Instagram, right.
- 10:53Speaker 3: I think I started it maybe my senior year of college. Yeah,
- 11:00Speaker 3: And I remember the very first photo I had is
- 11:02Speaker 3: like early on Instagram, like had all the filters and
- 11:05Speaker 3: everything totally different, and it was like, yeah, but I
- 11:09Speaker 3: do know you got to tell me what the photo
- 11:11Speaker 3: was was a photo of like a window sill. It
- 11:14Speaker 3: was like, you know, oh, I'm going to be artsy
- 11:16Speaker 3: at the beginning of this, not like, here's the photo
- 11:19Speaker 3: of me at this thing. It was like all aesthetics, yeah,
- 11:23Speaker 3: and the cool filters, yeah yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 2: So I've known about Instagram for many years. I've heard
- 11:29Speaker 2: about this website slash app. Super Bowl ended and my
- 11:34Speaker 2: wife and I were talking and she's like, how cool
- 11:37Speaker 2: are you that you're You're too cool for this. I'm like,
- 11:40Speaker 2: and she's like, you don't have to get on it. However,
- 11:43Speaker 2: you do have really cool experiences, and I think that
- 11:46Speaker 2: it could be cool to share some of those if
- 11:48Speaker 2: you wanted. And I'm like, all right, I see colleagues
- 11:51Speaker 2: in our industry and they're posting things sixteen times in
- 11:55Speaker 2: a day. I can't do that. I don't have the
- 11:58Speaker 2: stomach for it. It feels like a full time job.
- 12:00Speaker 2: But I said, okay, I'll start the Instagram. I went
- 12:03Speaker 2: with p Schreger because there's another guy named Peter Schreger
- 12:06Speaker 2: who's who's got like a thousand followers, and I think
- 12:09Speaker 2: they probably he hasn't posted it. They're all looking for me,
- 12:13Speaker 2: p Schrager. I'm on Instagram now and Aaron I have
- 12:17Speaker 2: one post. Okay, it's a picture of me reading spags
- 12:23Speaker 2: and it says Happy Combine Week, and it's got seventeen
- 12:28Speaker 2: thousand likes, and I've already picked up three thousand followers
- 12:32Speaker 2: on Instagram, so already I've got the bug. But the
- 12:36Speaker 2: question is, and I ask you this, do I put
- 12:39Speaker 2: up another picture? Do I just kind of stand on
- 12:41Speaker 2: that one? Or and I'm not gonna I don't plan
- 12:43Speaker 2: on doing live action stories of here are my thoughts
- 12:46Speaker 2: on tight ends on day three of the draft, Like
- 12:48Speaker 2: I ain't happening. I already worked for a living, got
- 12:51Speaker 2: worked for meta. I'm not looking for the followers. I don't.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I'm never gonna chase. I'm never gonna catch up. So
- 12:57Speaker 2: at this point it's just quality over quantity. The question is,
- 13:00Speaker 2: I have several other great photos from the combine. Would
- 13:03Speaker 2: you post another? Would you let that one kind of
- 13:05Speaker 2: be the flex and say just one read spags me.
- 13:11Speaker 3: That's what we're staying. You posted that one one day
- 13:13Speaker 3: Monday night. Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna preface this with
- 13:16Speaker 3: I am horrible at Instagram. The last photo I posted
- 13:21Speaker 3: to the like the grid is actually us at the
- 13:25Speaker 3: Draftansas City. Stuff I haven't posted like many stories, stories
- 13:32Speaker 3: is the big thing. I also am just bad at Instagram,
- 13:34Speaker 3: but I think at this point, it's Thursday, that's your
- 13:39Speaker 3: post from Monday is not organically going to come up
- 13:42Speaker 3: for god it, you got it. You're gonna be doing
- 13:46Speaker 3: and you know, especially if you do like you're you're
- 13:49Speaker 3: walking the streets of Brooklyn, you're film. So you can
- 13:52Speaker 3: just post it on Instagram. There's nothing, nothing says it
- 13:55Speaker 3: has to be platform specific.
- 13:57Speaker 2: I heard a cool ter. I met a guy. I'll
- 14:01Speaker 2: tell you who I met. So I went for pizza
- 14:04Speaker 2: last week at a place called Industry in New York City.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Have you been? Turns out the owner, guy named Adam Saper,
- 14:12Speaker 2: is a fan of Good Morning Football, fan of football.
- 14:15Speaker 2: We start talking, having a conversation, and the conversation is
- 14:18Speaker 2: going to a million different places, and he put it
- 14:19Speaker 2: so beautifully. He's like, you know what I call that?
- 14:21Speaker 2: I call that just that's a tab open. You can
- 14:24Speaker 2: come back. Let's go back to that tab. Let's go
- 14:26Speaker 2: back to that tab. I can't live with all these
- 14:28Speaker 2: social media things with too many tabs open in my head.
- 14:30Speaker 2: So the thought of doing videos for Twitter but then
- 14:33Speaker 2: also being on Instagram, and then hearing about team. You know,
- 14:37Speaker 2: hashtag this hashtag. That's what I might keep it very simple.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I might do one picture every week, might do one
- 14:43Speaker 2: picture every month. I just think I want to give
- 14:45Speaker 2: respect to those guys. So say I take a picture
- 14:47Speaker 2: of Zach Taylor and me. Does that have the same juice?
- 14:50Speaker 2: Probably not? Andy Reid and'spags. That's pretty baller.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Yeah, but you also, you know, if you were very
- 14:56Speaker 3: pigular and curated it so like your Instagram was just
- 15:00Speaker 3: you at restaurants or something. I mean, like, I don't know,
- 15:02Speaker 3: there are.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Things like that, Yes, me and coaches at dinner day yeah,
- 15:05Speaker 2: or you It's like a TV show. It sounds like
- 15:08Speaker 2: a podcast. The podcast. This is season three of the
- 15:13Speaker 2: season Peter at dinner with coaches, which is a good segue.
- 15:17Speaker 2: So that was Monday night. But then on Monday night,
- 15:20Speaker 2: and I don't again, I'm probably betraying the trust of
- 15:22Speaker 2: all of these men who have no idea that I'm
- 15:24Speaker 2: sharing all these details because none of this is for
- 15:26Speaker 2: TV and none of this is for but I feel
- 15:29Speaker 2: like if you listen to the season, you're into this
- 15:30Speaker 2: this kind of stuff. John Spanos, who is the son
- 15:35Speaker 2: of Dean Spanos and works in the front office and
- 15:38Speaker 2: also is one of the owners of the LA Chargers.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Texts me and says, are we going to see each
- 15:42Speaker 2: other this week? Because I love that guy and he's
- 15:45Speaker 2: a nice dude, and he's like, you see each other.
- 15:47Speaker 2: So I'm like, well, I'm actually at dinner right now
- 15:50Speaker 2: with your art rival chiefs. And he goes come by,
- 15:53Speaker 2: say hello, I'm at Harry and Issy's, which is right
- 15:56Speaker 2: next door. So I figure I don't have time because
- 15:58Speaker 2: morely there for two days, I don't have time to
- 16:00Speaker 2: do like a meal with John. I don't have time
- 16:02Speaker 2: to really get a coffee with John. But I do
- 16:04Speaker 2: want to see John. So I'll stop in and I'll
- 16:07Speaker 2: say hello, and maybe I'll drink an iced tea because
- 16:09Speaker 2: I gotta be fresh because I got the show in
- 16:11Speaker 2: the morning. I come by, I get there at the
- 16:13Speaker 2: table is John, and then this guy Ed maguire used
- 16:16Speaker 2: to work for the league and is now in the
- 16:18Speaker 2: front office of the Chargers, and some other folks with
- 16:22Speaker 2: the charges of organization start talking. I started asking about Harball.
- 16:25Speaker 2: They're giving me Harball stories. I started asking, all right,
- 16:28Speaker 2: well what do you got? And they're giving me all
- 16:29Speaker 2: the details about hiring. I checked my watch, it's two
- 16:32Speaker 2: hours later. I was just in and of course the
- 16:35Speaker 2: fat boy in me.
- 16:36Speaker 3: What did I do?
- 16:37Speaker 2: I ordered a second dinner, second dinner, second dinner, but
- 16:42Speaker 2: this one was a little lighter. I had a French
- 16:43Speaker 2: onion soup after a steak, dude, And then they're like, well,
- 16:49Speaker 2: that'd be it. I looked at the waitress and I
- 16:51Speaker 2: looked at her and she could tell him like meat sweats.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I'm just but I also have a pizza. I ordered
- 16:57Speaker 2: a pizza for myself.
- 16:59Speaker 3: This is like the Steinfeld episode where he's like, you
- 17:01Speaker 3: ordered a soup. That's about a dinner.
- 17:02Speaker 2: That's you said you have super you owe me a souper, Jerry.
- 17:07Speaker 2: I did the opposite of ordering a soup. I ordered everything.
- 17:11Speaker 2: And then they're like, do you want ice cream? Do
- 17:12Speaker 2: you want dessert? I'm like thinking about it. I'm like no.
- 17:15Speaker 2: But in four hour span, was with those guys from
- 17:19Speaker 2: the Chiefs and like you know, then their arch nemesis rivals.
- 17:23Speaker 2: I dance over and I just I have no allegiance
- 17:25Speaker 2: to anybody. I'm truly a mercenary. I go over there
- 17:28Speaker 2: and I hang with the with the Chargers guys and
- 17:31Speaker 2: I gotta tell you, and this will make Chiefs fans
- 17:34Speaker 2: who listen cringe and Broncos fans who know my affinity
- 17:37Speaker 2: for their coach and all that Chargers. Harbaugh is like
- 17:43Speaker 2: a different deal. And this Joe Ortiz comes from twenty
- 17:47Speaker 2: six years with the Ravens. He's now their GM twenty
- 17:50Speaker 2: six years and they're talking about this new facility that
- 17:54Speaker 2: they got and what Greg Roman and Harbor I have
- 17:58Speaker 2: been talking about using justin Herbert. Now I have what
- 18:01Speaker 2: do they call that, the banana and the tailpipe. I've
- 18:03Speaker 2: phoned for that before in recent years, I have not.
- 18:06Speaker 2: In fact, I made a big deal about it on
- 18:08Speaker 2: Good Morning Football two years ago when twenty six different
- 18:11Speaker 2: NFL network on air personalities had to pick their Super
- 18:14Speaker 2: Bowl champion, and eleven of them took the Chargers, and
- 18:17Speaker 2: I said, guys, Chargers win every year in August. Don't
- 18:21Speaker 2: fall for the Chargers. And naturally, the Chiefs were the
- 18:24Speaker 2: ones lifting that Lombardi and the Chargers were eliminated in
- 18:27Speaker 2: the wildcar round and of course missed the playoffs. This year,
- 18:31Speaker 2: Harball wins, Harbor wins everywhere he goes, and there's like
- 18:34Speaker 2: a winning culture really interested to see how they come
- 18:38Speaker 2: out of the gates early and what they do when
- 18:40Speaker 2: they played the Chiefs the first time, because historically speaking,
- 18:43Speaker 2: Herbert always plays well and the Chiefs always beat them.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I mean, I think Herbert won on a Thursday night
- 18:48Speaker 2: or Philip Rivers won on a Thursday night once, and
- 18:50Speaker 2: then Herbert won another time on a Sunday afternoon early
- 18:53Speaker 2: in the season when they were when Staley went for
- 18:54Speaker 2: an arrowhead a fourth down like one hundred times. But
- 18:58Speaker 2: I gotta say I think the Chargers their vibe. They're
- 19:00Speaker 2: very happy and one of the deals they said, they're like,
- 19:03Speaker 2: we're waiting for that scathing article about Harball and how
- 19:07Speaker 2: this isn't gonna work, and like Bill Plashki hasn't written
- 19:11Speaker 2: that article yet. Sam Farmer hasn't written that article yet.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Nobody at NFL or ESPN has come out and said, actually,
- 19:16Speaker 2: this is gonna be a colossal failure. College coaches don't
- 19:19Speaker 2: work at the NFL like everyone seems to be on board,
- 19:21Speaker 2: which is a little disarming. That's not the case usually
- 19:23Speaker 2: with a new head coaching. Higher go to bed, wake
- 19:34Speaker 2: up just feeling vile, just disgusting steak, soup, pizza, you know,
- 19:41Speaker 2: probably two blue cheese wedges. So many blue cheese wedges
- 19:44Speaker 2: in two days, it was harmful. Wake up through the
- 19:49Speaker 2: Good Morning Football Show. We have Todd Bowles on as
- 19:50Speaker 2: a guest. Todd is awesome. I don't think if Todd
- 19:53Speaker 2: Bowles as like this, like you know, voracious or what's
- 19:58Speaker 2: the word even you know, big enigmatic personality or he
- 20:01Speaker 2: was awesome. We talked about it. Wants Baker Mayfield back, obviously,
- 20:05Speaker 2: would love Mike Evans obviously. But I asked Todd Bowles
- 20:08Speaker 2: about what's your memories of the Combine as a player,
- 20:10Speaker 2: because he played a temple. He said the Combine in
- 20:13Speaker 2: nineteen eighty five was in New Orleans at the Superdome,
- 20:18Speaker 2: and he said, I had my drills and they were
- 20:21Speaker 2: delayed for some reason, and it was nineteen eighty five.
- 20:24Speaker 2: There were no TV cameras. He goes, and I start
- 20:26Speaker 2: doing my drills and someone tassed me on the shoulder
- 20:28Speaker 2: and says, you got to get out of here because
- 20:31Speaker 2: you have a flight booked for six o'clock and if
- 20:33Speaker 2: you don't leave now, you're not going to make your airplanes.
- 20:35Speaker 2: So we said, so I got my stuff and I left,
- 20:37Speaker 2: and I said during the drills, He goes, Yeah, I
- 20:39Speaker 2: did a couple of drills. He goes, But I wasn't
- 20:41Speaker 2: missing that flight. Like that's how it was back then.
- 20:44Speaker 2: It was like you have to be on the plane,
- 20:46Speaker 2: like we can't get to another flight. Like if you
- 20:47Speaker 2: don't get that plane, you're not getting back to Philadelvia.
- 20:50Speaker 2: He goes undrafted, goes on to win Super Bowls and
- 20:52Speaker 2: now is one of the most respected men in football. Bowls.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Awesome and great energy from him, rooting for him and
- 20:59Speaker 2: rooting for what Tampa does this offseason. Because I'll tell you,
- 21:03Speaker 2: of all the teams that I spoke to this week,
- 21:05Speaker 2: and I talked to everybody, really, I tried to get
- 21:08Speaker 2: time with everyone, Tampa has maybe the most precarious offseason
- 21:13Speaker 2: decisions because they've got Baker, who they you know, they
- 21:16Speaker 2: want to hopefully get him to agree to like some
- 21:19Speaker 2: hometown discount. I would imagine he ain't doing that. Baker's
- 21:22Speaker 2: gonna have other options. So what's the number for Baker Mayfield?
- 21:25Speaker 3: Is it?
- 21:26Speaker 2: They have to pay what they've paid Daniel Jones in
- 21:28Speaker 2: New York. They have to pay forty million dollars to
- 21:29Speaker 2: Baker Mayfeld. It's a lot of money. For Baker who
- 21:31Speaker 2: made four million dollars last year. Imagine making ten x
- 21:33Speaker 2: of what you make over one year. Then again he
- 21:36Speaker 2: downs to the divisional round, then Antoine Winfield Junior. They're
- 21:39Speaker 2: probably gonna, you know, give him the tag if they
- 21:42Speaker 2: can't get an extension done. But as I made my
- 21:45Speaker 2: case to Bowls in the commercial break, like as we're talking,
- 21:48Speaker 2: like to me, that guy's a great safety. Pay them
- 21:50Speaker 2: pay him top dollar. I don't know, Like he's young,
- 21:53Speaker 2: he's good, it's a great teammate. Like pay him. And
- 21:55Speaker 2: then Mike Evans, who before the season was like, this
- 21:59Speaker 2: is my last is a buccaneer, I'm done, you know,
- 22:01Speaker 2: negotiating it, goes and has the best year of his
- 22:03Speaker 2: pro career. I think he had thirteen touchdowns. Like Mike
- 22:05Speaker 2: Evans was amazing. What do you do with him? They're
- 22:07Speaker 2: all free agents, so is Levonte David, so is Devin White.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Really interesting offseason in Tampa Bay. And it was cool
- 22:14Speaker 2: to get time with Todd Bowles. All right, so we
- 22:17Speaker 2: rap Good Morning Football, and I bolt out of there
- 22:20Speaker 2: because I have a standing date. One of the main
- 22:23Speaker 2: reasons I had to get to Combine. I have a
- 22:25Speaker 2: standing date going back many years now. Eleven am at
- 22:30Speaker 2: Cafe Patachew, which is an unbelievable breakfast spot in Indianapolis.
- 22:36Speaker 2: And that standing date is with Joe Shane, the GM
- 22:38Speaker 2: of the Giants, and Brandon Bean, the GM of the
- 22:41Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills. Those guys work together in Buffalo. They are
- 22:44Speaker 2: very close friends, and I have somehow been brought into
- 22:47Speaker 2: this great tradition where it's the three of us. We
- 22:49Speaker 2: have breakfast every single year Tuesday at the Combine. I
- 22:53Speaker 2: was not missing this. I found a way to get
- 22:55Speaker 2: there obviously from the show. Talk to Joe for a while,
- 22:58Speaker 2: talk to Brandon for a while, and I'll tell you
- 23:00Speaker 2: if you're going to Indianapolis and you're looking to go,
- 23:02Speaker 2: I told those places at night it's a free for
- 23:05Speaker 2: all at night. You go there, it's just, you know,
- 23:08Speaker 2: it's ninety dudes, ten women. You know, most of the
- 23:12Speaker 2: women are are individuals who we know who work in
- 23:14Speaker 2: the media, and a lot of the dudes are coaches
- 23:17Speaker 2: and media guys. But then you also have fans just
- 23:19Speaker 2: flocking there to like get a selfie. Uh kathe Patachew.
- 23:24Speaker 2: I don't want to give away any secrets, but you
- 23:25Speaker 2: walk in there, you're going to see everyone. You're going
- 23:28Speaker 2: to see, you know, all those executives. And in this case,
- 23:32Speaker 2: we're sitting down there and multiple agents came by and said, hello,
- 23:37Speaker 2: you got Joel Siegel in one corner. You've got Buddy
- 23:41Speaker 2: Baker in another corner. You've got RJ from CIA, who
- 23:47Speaker 2: is Tony Romo's guy in another area. Like it's just
- 23:49Speaker 2: it's one of those places where everyone's coming in and out.
- 23:52Speaker 2: And you know, Harball eats there most mornings, John Harbaugh,
- 23:56Speaker 2: Howie Roseman takes meetings there. Kevin Demo from the Rams,
- 23:59Speaker 2: that's usually his spot. Cafe Patachu little under the under
- 24:03Speaker 2: the radar spot. In our breakfast was awesome. Bean was
- 24:05Speaker 2: in great space as a Bills fan, Aaron I will
- 24:07Speaker 2: tell you they are feeling very good about the bounce
- 24:12Speaker 2: back from that loss. It was heartbreaking obviously, but they
- 24:15Speaker 2: like what they have. I'd say one possibility that just
- 24:19Speaker 2: you know, we'll see how it goes. But Gabe Davis,
- 24:21Speaker 2: who was such a good Buffalo Bill as a free agent,
- 24:24Speaker 2: you know, just the numbers game, and Brandon said, like,
- 24:28Speaker 2: I would love nothing more than for Gabe Davis to
- 24:31Speaker 2: come back. I don't know if we have enough money
- 24:33Speaker 2: left to pay what he's gonna get, and that might
- 24:35Speaker 2: be the end of that road. But we'll see as
- 24:38Speaker 2: Gabe Davis is a beloved Buffalo bill and one of
- 24:41Speaker 2: their many free agents. All right, so we wrap that,
- 24:45Speaker 2: go back and think like take a nap, right, No, No,
- 24:48Speaker 2: because my buddy Mike Greenberg, who also works for Tampa Bay,
- 24:52Speaker 2: he's in town. Got to see him. He handles the
- 24:55Speaker 2: salary cap. As I was saying, Buccaneers have all sorts
- 24:57Speaker 2: of stuff. He and I get get a bite as
- 24:59Speaker 2: we're sitting there. Joe Barry, who was recently fired from
- 25:04Speaker 2: the Green Bay Packers or stepped away, however you want
- 25:06Speaker 2: to say it. I say fired. It sounds so negative.
- 25:08Speaker 2: He might, you know, want to slip my neck like
- 25:10Speaker 2: I didn't get fired. I decided to leave as mutual.
- 25:13Speaker 2: He's now working in Miami as the outside linebackers coach.
- 25:17Speaker 2: And here was the coolest deal. See Joe, he looks great,
- 25:20Speaker 2: great spirits. He says he got on a plane Monday
- 25:24Speaker 2: from suburban Wisconsin outside of Green Bay and it was
- 25:28Speaker 2: negative ten degrees and snowing. Got off the plane in
- 25:30Speaker 2: Fort Lauderdale and it was eighty five degrees and the
- 25:33Speaker 2: sun was shining, and he's like, I don't know how
- 25:35Speaker 2: my career goes, but like I'm gonna be all right,
- 25:37Speaker 2: Like I'll be okay, this is a good decision. He
- 25:39Speaker 2: and Mike McDaniel have never worked together, but because of
- 25:42Speaker 2: their shared overlaps with lafleur and McVeigh and so many
- 25:46Speaker 2: other people that have worked together, he's he's got a
- 25:49Speaker 2: great fondness for Mike McDaniel and they've hung before, so
- 25:51Speaker 2: he said, it's going great. The coolest part is this,
- 25:54Speaker 2: and might ask you to google his name and read
- 25:56Speaker 2: a little resume and forget it. Joe's like, hey, Shregs,
- 26:00Speaker 2: like you've always been a pal of mine. You're great,
- 26:02Speaker 2: And I love Joe Berr. I think he's a great dude.
- 26:04Speaker 2: His father in law's Rod Maren. Now I always knew
- 26:07Speaker 2: that his father in law is Rod Marinelly, former coach
- 26:10Speaker 2: for many years defensive line of course, the Lions head coach,
- 26:13Speaker 2: considered one of the best defensive line coaches of all time.
- 26:16Speaker 2: So he's married to Rod's daughter. He says, this is
- 26:19Speaker 2: my dad, Okay, meeting Joe Barry's dad. Google Joe Barry's dad.
- 26:25Speaker 2: I gotta get a first name for this, because this
- 26:26Speaker 2: guy needs his own TV show. Unbelievable dude built like
- 26:31Speaker 2: a brick house, just like Jacked dude in his seventies.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Does anything come up Joe Barry's father, because he's telling
- 26:38Speaker 2: me I was the offensive line coach at Tennessee under
- 26:42Speaker 2: Phil Fumer when we won in ninety eight. Do we
- 26:44Speaker 2: have a little bio on Mike Barry.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Former o line coach. He coached for high schools and
- 26:50Speaker 3: then the USFL. He was with the San Antonio gun Slingers,
- 26:54Speaker 3: Dolan Breakers, and then the Detroit Lions. And he played
- 26:58Speaker 3: college football for Nebraska and Southern Illinois as a center.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Okay, he ends up as the Tennessee offensive line coach
- 27:06Speaker 2: for years, four years under Phil Follmer in their glory ears.
- 27:10Speaker 2: And then we immediately start talking and I don't know
- 27:13Speaker 2: where it went there. We start talking about the team
- 27:15Speaker 2: martin ninety eight Tennessee Volunteers, and I started listening to
- 27:18Speaker 2: that backfilm, like he got Jamal Lewis, he got Travis Stevens,
- 27:21Speaker 2: he got Travis Henry, he got Sean Bryce, and he's like, whoa, whoa, whoaa,
- 27:24Speaker 2: how the hell do you know? This son. I'm like,
- 27:26Speaker 2: because I love that team. And then Joe Barry starts
- 27:29Speaker 2: chiming in and he's like a on defense. They had
- 27:30Speaker 2: Al Wilson and Raynock Thompson. This is the beauty of
- 27:33Speaker 2: the combine. We now get into a fifteen minute conversation
- 27:35Speaker 2: about the ninety eight Tennessee volunteers and he said he
- 27:39Speaker 2: walked into the old line room and and you know,
- 27:41Speaker 2: Peyton Manning, for all this time at Tennessee had never
- 27:44Speaker 2: beaten Florida. And this gentleman, Mike Barry comes in as
- 27:47Speaker 2: the offensive line coach, refresh off Peyton Manning never been
- 27:50Speaker 2: able to get our Florida and he says, we ain't
- 27:52Speaker 2: losing them Florida Gators. And then Tennessee comes out there
- 27:55Speaker 2: and they bullied Florida around and they win and tem
- 27:58Speaker 2: Martin beats the Florida Gators and Steve Spurrier and I'm
- 28:01Speaker 2: ready to run through a wall and I'm like, the combine, baby,
- 28:03Speaker 2: let's talkat So I have those two interactions, It's awesome.
- 28:17Speaker 2: But then the big one on Tuesday night is I
- 28:20Speaker 2: have another standing dinner and it's with Sean Payton and
- 28:24Speaker 2: it's with Mickey Loomis, who's the general manager of the Saints.
- 28:27Speaker 2: And then George Peyton joined us, who works for the
- 28:31Speaker 2: Denver Broncos as their general manager. And then I love this.
- 28:34Speaker 2: They brought around a guy named Mike Ornstein, nicknamed Ornie.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I'd say google Ornie. I would say google Ornie, just
- 28:42Speaker 2: like Shane Gillis said, google it. But let's not talk
- 28:44Speaker 2: about it. That's it. Ornie has one of those decorated
- 28:47Speaker 2: careers in football. I truly think there could be a
- 28:50Speaker 2: movie made on Ornie. He worked for Al Davis and
- 28:53Speaker 2: the Raiders, he worked for the League, and he for
- 28:56Speaker 2: a long time has been Sean Payton's guy. He doesn't
- 28:59Speaker 2: work for Denver, but he is affiliated with Sean Payton,
- 29:03Speaker 2: and Sean Payton will go to bat for Ornie and
- 29:06Speaker 2: we'll be there and Ornie comes. He's got to be
- 29:09Speaker 2: in his seventies. I don't know how old he is,
- 29:11Speaker 2: but he's still sharp as attack. And he's sitting at
- 29:13Speaker 2: our table and he's telling us stories from yesteryear. He's
- 29:17Speaker 2: talking us about when Roder Goodell was a was a
- 29:19Speaker 2: PR guy for the Jets, and how he knew rob
- 29:22Speaker 2: Dri Goodell. Then he's talking about you know, tagleaboo, and
- 29:25Speaker 2: then he starts getting into the Sean Payton Saints days
- 29:29Speaker 2: and what they were building there in New Orleans and
- 29:31Speaker 2: just how many wild stories there were sewn is in
- 29:35Speaker 2: unbelievable spirits. Then I know it's February, and I know
- 29:38Speaker 2: there's no reason not to be been like like this
- 29:40Speaker 2: Russell Wilson thing is looming, and yet here's Sean Payton,
- 29:44Speaker 2: cool as could be. At Saint Elmos. Two different people
- 29:47Speaker 2: come over to say hello. One of them is Brian Harlan,
- 29:50Speaker 2: who is now a coaches agent, but he's Kevin Harlan's brother.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Their father, Bob was long affiliated with the Chicago Bears.
- 29:59Speaker 2: So Brian comes over. Brian represents I think both Harball brothers,
- 30:02Speaker 2: represents a few other people, and he was regaling us
- 30:05Speaker 2: with stories of when Sean Payton interviewed for the Green
- 30:08Speaker 2: Bay Packers before he took the Saints job, and Ornie
- 30:12Speaker 2: keeps on, Johnny, yeah, but you didn't hire him, You
- 30:13Speaker 2: didn't hire him. You guys didn't hire him. And Ornie's
- 30:16Speaker 2: just got Peyton's back, like, yeah, yeah, you loved them
- 30:18Speaker 2: so much with the Packers, but you guys didn' hire him,
- 30:19Speaker 2: you guys didn't hire guy, and Seans like, all right,
- 30:21Speaker 2: already enough, I get it. It's great. Uh, but I
- 30:24Speaker 2: don't even know that side of Sean Payton that he
- 30:26Speaker 2: went and he interviewed with the Packers, didn't get the Packers' job,
- 30:29Speaker 2: and then got the Saints job. So he was talking
- 30:32Speaker 2: about that whole process and how what an honor it
- 30:34Speaker 2: would have been to been the Packers head coach. I'm like,
- 30:36Speaker 2: what a fascinating, like a cross road. He would have
- 30:38Speaker 2: had Aaron Rodgers who knows instead of Drew Brees, and
- 30:41Speaker 2: like what would have happened there? We talked about Russell,
- 30:44Speaker 2: talked about Russell. There'll be news coming on Russell obviously,
- 30:48Speaker 2: and then we went down memory lane about the combine
- 30:51Speaker 2: and Mickey Loomis is incredible with this stuff. Mickey was
- 30:55Speaker 2: with Seattle for many years, came over, he was a
- 30:57Speaker 2: Chuck Knox disciple, comes over to the Saints the same
- 31:00Speaker 2: around the same time as Sean two thousand and two,
- 31:02Speaker 2: two thousand and three, and if there were the Saints
- 31:04Speaker 2: ever since, longest ten year GM and the lead. He
- 31:07Speaker 2: has incredible stories. And he was telling me that you
- 31:09Speaker 2: know we're in sant Elmos and as we're in there
- 31:12Speaker 2: and Harlan comes over to say hi, and a couple
- 31:14Speaker 2: other people come over here, and there's a kid. There's
- 31:17Speaker 2: a kid who comes by and it's like yo to
- 31:19Speaker 2: Sean Payton, I love like Yo, I'm friends with Gary V.
- 31:21Speaker 2: And Shawn's looking at him like I'm like, I'm like
- 31:23Speaker 2: dying inside, and he's like and he's like, yeah, gary Vee.
- 31:25Speaker 2: And like Sean has no idea who Gary V is.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Maybe he does, but like he does a Gary Vee there,
- 31:30Speaker 2: Like Sean takes a photo of this guy and I'm like,
- 31:31Speaker 2: I love the combine. Only here could some twenty year
- 31:34Speaker 2: old guy be like, I know Gary V is that
- 31:36Speaker 2: the into Sean Payton. Sean Payton's looking at him cross
- 31:38Speaker 2: that I don't know what that means. Okay, Like right,
- 31:40Speaker 2: and I'm sitting at the table like I know who
- 31:41Speaker 2: Gary V is. He's talking about NFT's and collectible on
- 31:44Speaker 2: my timeline. Shout out to Gary Vanynerchuk. I'll come on
- 31:48Speaker 2: your podcast if you want me.
- 31:50Speaker 3: Uh.
- 31:50Speaker 2: But Sean Mickey Lewis is like, once upon a time
- 31:53Speaker 2: you'd come here and it was you know, you'd have
- 31:56Speaker 2: Peter King you'd have John Clayton, you'd have Chris Mortenson,
- 31:58Speaker 2: you'd have Will McDonough and it would just be that
- 32:02Speaker 2: as far as media. And now you look around and
- 32:05Speaker 2: it's every team has their home in house media team.
- 32:07Speaker 2: You've got NFL Network sending a BRIGADEI of reporters, You've
- 32:10Speaker 2: got ESPN sending their entire army, and you've got every newspaper,
- 32:14Speaker 2: radio station, everyone's sending it. And it's it's great for
- 32:17Speaker 2: content because you have access to everyone there. And Mickey's
- 32:20Speaker 2: just like, it's unbelievable what this thing has become. And
- 32:23Speaker 2: I said to him, well, do you think nil money
- 32:25Speaker 2: might change this thing? And he's like, well, what do
- 32:26Speaker 2: you mean. I'm like, well, if the college kids are
- 32:29Speaker 2: all getting paid, do they necessarily need to be you know,
- 32:32Speaker 2: coming to the combine again and he's like, I I
- 32:35Speaker 2: you know, the whole table was like, I think there's
- 32:37Speaker 2: a great value for all these prospects and for coaches
- 32:40Speaker 2: and general managers for being here in person, getting to
- 32:43Speaker 2: see the person in person and getting the chance to
- 32:45Speaker 2: go through the interview process and get to meet face
- 32:49Speaker 2: to face as opposed to on a zoom screen. That
- 32:52Speaker 2: was Tuesday night, NFL Network had a little get together
- 32:58Speaker 2: at Prime forty seven. I popped over there, said hello
- 33:00Speaker 2: to everybody. It was great, and I made the conscious
- 33:03Speaker 2: decision nine o'clock, get in a bed because we've got
- 33:05Speaker 2: a long week ahead, Go to sleep, Get on my
- 33:08Speaker 2: plane after we do Good Morning Football, full show. Good
- 33:10Speaker 2: Morning Football was great. Get on the plane. And who's
- 33:13Speaker 2: sitting right in front of me but John Mahra, the
- 33:16Speaker 2: owner and chairman of the New York Giants, who was
- 33:18Speaker 2: there for competition committee stuff. And I'm like, if I
- 33:21Speaker 2: ever want to be humbled, or if I ever want
- 33:22Speaker 2: to just know, like like all right, hotch it like here,
- 33:26Speaker 2: if the owner of the Giants is sitting in front
- 33:29Speaker 2: of me on a commercial flight at you know, eleven
- 33:31Speaker 2: am at Indianapolis, don't ever get too big for your breitches.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Like it's good to see that sometimes and realize like, hey, okay,
- 33:39Speaker 2: like if he's flying like that and he's dealing with
- 33:41Speaker 2: the same you know, issues of an airport, I could
- 33:44Speaker 2: I could stop bitching about all my you know, flight
- 33:46Speaker 2: delays and whatever else. Get back, do the show today,
- 33:51Speaker 2: do the show tomorrow, and then I'll be right back
- 33:53Speaker 2: in Indy. But real quick some takeaways. As I said,
- 33:56Speaker 2: this will be a quicker podcast. No guests just wanted
- 33:58Speaker 2: to give him a recap of my week. The Caleb
- 34:01Speaker 2: Williams thing is fascinating. So I've got all these notes
- 34:03Speaker 2: in front of me, because I literally have a notebook
- 34:05Speaker 2: when I go there and I write things down. Here
- 34:08Speaker 2: are some notable NIL endorsement deals that Caleb Williams had
- 34:13Speaker 2: at USC Wendy's Doctor Pepper, Nissan, United Airlines, PlayStation Neutrigina.
- 34:19Speaker 2: He has reportably, I have this down in my notes,
- 34:22Speaker 2: has reportedly made around ten to twelve million dollars in
- 34:26Speaker 2: NIL deals and endorsements combines. Here, Caleb Williams decides he's
- 34:32Speaker 2: not going to arrive the same day everyone else does.
- 34:34Speaker 2: I'm gonna come a day later, okay. I'm also not
- 34:37Speaker 2: going to necessarily go through the medical examinations at every
- 34:40Speaker 2: quarterback who's ever been to the Combine has done. I'm
- 34:42Speaker 2: just gonna say I'm good. You guys don't need to
- 34:44Speaker 2: inspect me. I'm also not gonna throw. I'm also not
- 34:48Speaker 2: gonna run. And I don't know if he's gonna be
- 34:51Speaker 2: sticking around much longer after Friday Night's interviews. With the
- 34:55Speaker 2: media where he's got to just do one podium session.
- 34:57Speaker 2: I'm not sure he's gonna even stick around for the
- 34:59Speaker 2: day that they do the drills, And already there's that
- 35:02Speaker 2: buzz of does he love this? Is he entitled? You
- 35:06Speaker 2: know what's his deal? And I think it's a really
- 35:10Speaker 2: interesting case study. He is the first nil superstar to
- 35:16Speaker 2: enter the draft where he is a no brainer, top
- 35:19Speaker 2: overall pick, and he has twelve million dollars in his
- 35:22Speaker 2: pocket and without a traditional football agent, which he doesn't have.
- 35:26Speaker 2: He's got a team of managers and his father's very,
- 35:28Speaker 2: very involved. Does he have to play by the rules?
- 35:33Speaker 2: Is it a huge turnoff that he doesn't want to
- 35:35Speaker 2: throw at the comma? Is it a huge turnoff that
- 35:36Speaker 2: he comes a day later? Is it a huge turnoff
- 35:39Speaker 2: that he lives in La right now, in a beautiful
- 35:42Speaker 2: apartment that overlooks all of Los Angeles and doesn't necessarily
- 35:46Speaker 2: need to play by the NFL's traditional combine rules. I
- 35:50Speaker 2: can't find anyone with rational thinking and write my thinking
- 35:55Speaker 2: that this is not a fair comparison to compare him
- 35:59Speaker 2: to quarterbacks of yesteryear, like this is apples to oranges? Now?
- 36:03Speaker 2: Is it easier to just suck it up and say,
- 36:05Speaker 2: all right, I'll be there on time. I'll come and
- 36:07Speaker 2: do all this stuff, and I'll I won't miss I
- 36:09Speaker 2: won't be a day you know, later than everyone else. Whatever.
- 36:11Speaker 2: Maybe maybe that makes simpler, But I also think we're
- 36:14Speaker 2: looking at it in a different lens and in a
- 36:17Speaker 2: weird way. And I say this with NFL being a
- 36:19Speaker 2: part of this podcast, like, is he doing the combine
- 36:22Speaker 2: a favor even attending it because he knows he's going
- 36:26Speaker 2: first overall? Does he even have to be there at all?
- 36:31Speaker 2: He showed up, He's going to do the interviews. I
- 36:33Speaker 2: know he interviewed with Washington. I talked to Cliff, said,
- 36:35Speaker 2: you know, it was great seeing you know Caleb again.
- 36:38Speaker 2: He's got a bunch of different interviews. He's going to
- 36:40Speaker 2: go through the process. But this is where we pick
- 36:43Speaker 2: people apart, and this is the time I would say,
- 36:45Speaker 2: be cautious in doing that with the NIL athlete, and
- 36:48Speaker 2: especially a guy who's made so much and has been
- 36:50Speaker 2: so famous and has already been told from basically everyone
- 36:53Speaker 2: that you're the number one overall pick bearing to do
- 36:55Speaker 2: something horribly wrong in the next two months, you're going
- 36:58Speaker 2: number one overall, there's nothing the other guys could do
- 37:00Speaker 2: to jump it. Now where he goes that still yet
- 37:03Speaker 2: to be determined. But I think it was a really
- 37:06Speaker 2: and like the fact he came and showed up like
- 37:08Speaker 2: that checks the box for me. Do the interviews, me
- 37:11Speaker 2: the teams. I don't need you to be doing flips,
- 37:13Speaker 2: and I certainly don't need you to be risking anything
- 37:16Speaker 2: on the performance in the workouts. Aaron just coming at
- 37:18Speaker 2: it from an outsider's perspective. When you hear that every
- 37:22Speaker 2: other quarterback arrived on one day and every other quarterback
- 37:24Speaker 2: is going to do the medical examination and that Caleb's
- 37:26Speaker 2: maybe taking a different route, does it rub you wrong
- 37:29Speaker 2: as a football fan or is it? I have to
- 37:32Speaker 2: look at it as a business now, and that's exactly
- 37:34Speaker 2: what this is. And this kid doesn't need to do
- 37:36Speaker 2: any of that.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I think if it weren't so, if he hadn't
- 37:40Speaker 3: had this past year of just being presumed as the
- 37:43Speaker 3: top quarterback in a class full of great quarterback prospects,
- 37:48Speaker 3: it might be different. Like if he came in and
- 37:52Speaker 3: was like, actually, I'll do everything, but I don't want
- 37:54Speaker 3: to get weighed.
- 37:54Speaker 2: That's the one thing I won't let you do, it'd
- 37:56Speaker 2: be a red flag, yea.
- 37:58Speaker 3: But the fact that he's just like, what else does
- 38:01Speaker 3: he have to prove? I mean, you know, And so
- 38:03Speaker 3: I think it's he is fascinating as a prospect. I
- 38:09Speaker 3: don't think I need to watch him throw anymore to
- 38:12Speaker 3: know that. I like, he has plenty of tape doing
- 38:14Speaker 3: that and scrambling, and all the questions are there obviously,
- 38:18Speaker 3: you know, can he can he play within himself and
- 38:23Speaker 3: not sort of get scattered too?
- 38:28Speaker 2: Yeah? To me, it's this is more about entitlement and
- 38:30Speaker 2: whether people are turned off by it. And from what
- 38:32Speaker 2: I got at the NFL, people are like, you can't
- 38:34Speaker 2: be turned on by it. And if you've been following
- 38:35Speaker 2: college football, that's what these college coaches are dealing with
- 38:38Speaker 2: every day.
- 38:39Speaker 3: And how can you say? I mean, I know, the
- 38:41Speaker 3: question is like does he love it? This is the
- 38:43Speaker 3: guy who like lost the game and had so much
- 38:46Speaker 3: emotion because he lost. Like, I think that's I think
- 38:50Speaker 3: it's a silly question. Does he care about it?
- 38:52Speaker 2: I've heard from I've heard from people not in the
- 38:54Speaker 2: football world, but like you know, fans when I tweet
- 38:57Speaker 2: about Cayleb Williams that like he cried to his mommy
- 39:00Speaker 2: after a loss. I'm like, jeez, it's like these are
- 39:02Speaker 2: things that he's gonna have to answer, and he will.
- 39:04Speaker 2: But I also think that's like, I don't think it's
- 39:06Speaker 2: a negative either. A guy was emotional. That was it
- 39:09Speaker 2: so curious it look you hear the stuff drives a
- 39:13Speaker 2: fancy car, has a sick apartments. It was all above
- 39:16Speaker 2: water like it used to be like so taboo, but
- 39:18Speaker 2: like it's legal now. You can't hold that against him.
- 39:22Speaker 2: So I think that's one interesting one. The other one
- 39:25Speaker 2: and we're gonna see him work out. I don't know
- 39:29Speaker 2: what to make a JJ McCarthy Michigan quarterback National champion,
- 39:33Speaker 2: and I say that and it sounds like I'm being like,
- 39:35Speaker 2: h here's the deal. Everybody says he's unbelievable, and he's
- 39:41Speaker 2: he's been an amazing interview I talked to multiple people
- 39:43Speaker 2: have interviewed I'm like kids out of this world. But
- 39:45Speaker 2: at Michigan, there are games, including the Penn State Game,
- 39:50Speaker 2: where he wasn't asked to throw the ball. He's asked
- 39:52Speaker 2: to hand the ball off, and in a lot of
- 39:54Speaker 2: ways his stats do not match up with these other
- 39:57Speaker 2: top prospects. I mean talking about Jayden Daniels ran for
- 40:01Speaker 2: three thousand yards and threw for twelve thousand yards in
- 40:03Speaker 2: college football. It's the only player in NFL history to
- 40:06Speaker 2: do that. You're gonna put him in the same room
- 40:07Speaker 2: as JJ McCarthy, who against Penn State didn't throw the
- 40:09Speaker 2: ball in the second half that said ultimate winner. I
- 40:14Speaker 2: think he's lost three games since middle school is what
- 40:17Speaker 2: I've heard, which is incredible. And then the crazy part is,
- 40:22Speaker 2: you know, Harball came out and was like, he's the
- 40:24Speaker 2: greatest Michigan quarterback to ever play, and that includes Harball,
- 40:27Speaker 2: includes Brady, includes all these guys. Harball went out and
- 40:29Speaker 2: said that, so JJ's gonna it sounds like JJ is
- 40:33Speaker 2: gonna do the workouts and it's gonna throw, and he's
- 40:36Speaker 2: gonna do all the drills and all that stuff. So
- 40:38Speaker 2: this is an opportunity for him. I think he's one
- 40:40Speaker 2: of the rare guys that it's like, okay, apples to
- 40:43Speaker 2: apples when you're going up against the bow Nicks and
- 40:45Speaker 2: Michael Pennix, who are gonna be out there and who
- 40:47Speaker 2: are you know, very decorated throwers of the football, Like
- 40:52Speaker 2: can you hang? Can you do the same thing. Now,
- 40:55Speaker 2: the player and the person are all beloved, but when
- 40:58Speaker 2: you get on the field, like the drills, I think
- 41:00Speaker 2: that's gonna be really interesting to see how he shapes up.
- 41:03Speaker 2: And the last one is like who's gonna be your
- 41:05Speaker 2: your combine and breakout star. Who's the guy that's gonna
- 41:09Speaker 2: show up and like just absolutely light this thing up.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I've got a few names. The guy that I'm really
- 41:16Speaker 2: excited for is actually the Texas wide receiver A. D. Mitchell. Also,
- 41:20Speaker 2: I think his surname is his full name is I
- 41:22Speaker 2: don't know, Im Mitchell. The wide receiver class is loaded.
- 41:27Speaker 2: I love this kid, Ricky pearsall out of Florida, who
- 41:30Speaker 2: is a transfer from Arizona State who does like one
- 41:32Speaker 2: handed catches, but Ady Mitchell, I think he's gonna have
- 41:35Speaker 2: one of these freak combine performances. I think the Washington
- 41:39Speaker 2: wide receiver rome A. Doon Day is competing, which I love.
- 41:43Speaker 2: I think Neighbors is not, and I think Marvin Harrison
- 41:46Speaker 2: is not. So they cross those two off. But very
- 41:49Speaker 2: deep wide receiver class. That's all Saturday Saturday. The quarterbacks
- 41:55Speaker 2: are fascinating in that you're not gonna get your top
- 41:59Speaker 2: two or three I think May also said he's not throwing,
- 42:03Speaker 2: but Nicks, Pennix, JJ McCarthy, all those guys, Sam Hartman,
- 42:08Speaker 2: those guys are gonna throw. So you got enough big
- 42:09Speaker 2: names that you know from the college game, there's always
- 42:12Speaker 2: gonna be a forty eight yard dashup holods us away,
- 42:14Speaker 2: There's always gonna be a big man on Thursday night.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Who's gonna, you know, razzle dazzle us. But I'm most
- 42:19Speaker 2: excited for the wide receiver group. I think on Saturday,
- 42:22Speaker 2: and I then circle that name, ad Mitchell. I think
- 42:25Speaker 2: that guy can burn, and I think he will burn
- 42:27Speaker 2: when we get out there on Saturday. All right, quick podcast,
- 42:31Speaker 2: I got a run. I'm headed to Indianapolis again. Aaron,
- 42:35Speaker 2: I appreciate you doing this, and Jason, I appreciate you
- 42:38Speaker 2: guys making it around my schedule. Hopefully listeners you enjoy this.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Trust me. Next week we will do a full download,
- 42:45Speaker 2: We will give you full draft preview, and we might
- 42:47Speaker 2: bring on a guest who is there that has maybe
- 42:50Speaker 2: got front office lens on it that can break it down.
- 42:53Speaker 2: But I hope you enjoyed the stories from the combine.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Trying to think if there's anything that will blow you away,
- 43:01Speaker 2: Sean Payton eat the cocktail sauce. I'm trying to think
- 43:04Speaker 2: if he ate the horse Raddigs or not, he might
- 43:06Speaker 2: have stayed away. Actually, I think Sean didn't even have
- 43:08Speaker 2: a stake. I think he's down on the way. He's
- 43:09Speaker 2: looking good. Andy went for it. Andy went with the fries.
- 43:12Speaker 2: I think Sean had multiple salads in a soup, an
- 43:15Speaker 2: interesting order. I'm heading back to Indianapols. I'll see all
- 43:18Speaker 2: these guys again and I'll have more stories. But for
- 43:20Speaker 2: the Season with Peter Schreger, Chason English, Aaron Wan Kaufman.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Love you listeners, Thanks for listening, all right, I'm to Indy.
