- 0:02And about the eleventh hour. He went out and found others
- 0:05standing idle and saith unto them.
- 0:08Why stand ye here, all the day idle go.
- 0:11Ye also into the vineyard and whatsoever, is right that shall
- 0:15ye receive a-listers? This is Nick from scripture
- 0:19Central. And today's podcast addresses,
- 0:21the question, what does the parable of the laborers in the
- 0:24vineyard? Teach about God's mercy Well, on
- 0:30his way to Jerusalem for the last time, Jesus taught very
- 0:34demanding and exalting doctrines relating to marriage in
- 0:37consecration Jesus. Then answered concerns related
- 0:41to those doctrines that some of his disciples had regarding
- 0:44salvation and who would be the greatest in heaven?
- 0:47Jesus tenderly. Crafted his Corrections through
- 0:50a parable about day. Laborers.
- 0:52Hired to work in a Vineyard through this Parable, Jesus
- 0:55demonstrates. How all who enter the Covenant
- 0:58path and endure to the end. End in following him will be
- 1:01blessed with exaltation and eternal life.
- 1:04As the Lord has agreed in this. Parable God has cast as a
- 1:08householder which went out early in the morning to hire labourers
- 1:12into his Vineyard after making a covenant with some workers to
- 1:16labor. In his Vineyard, the man
- 1:18ultimately returns for other times to the marketplace at the
- 1:223rd, 6th 9th and 11th hours in order to hire other laborers.
- 1:29Well as John and Jenni Welch observed, this Parable
- 1:32accurately describes the hiring practices for day workers.
- 1:35In New Testament times it is unusual in the sense that an
- 1:39employer did not normally hire workers by the hour or for half
- 1:43days hiring day workers later. The day shows how great and
- 1:47Urgent to work, is that the householder needs to have done?
- 1:51It is likely that the householder wants to maximize
- 1:53the Harvest before the crop is too ripe or too late or the
- 1:58weather. Turns bad.
- 2:00Similarly, God is concerned for all his children and is
- 2:04constantly at work to be sure that we all have the opportunity
- 2:08to be gathered into his barn. This Parable further diverges
- 2:12from standard expectations of a mortal mind set when all the
- 2:15workers are paid at the end of the day beginning from the last
- 2:19unto the first, the workers are all paid the same amount of
- 2:23money at an area, which was the standard days wage that the time
- 2:27no matter what time. They were hired and began work
- 2:30in the vineyard. This seeming unfairness LED,
- 2:33some of the workers hired earlier in the Arid.
- 2:36This seeming unfairness LED some of the workers hired earlier in
- 2:39the day to complain at the householders generosity and when
- 2:44they had received their pay, they murmured against the good
- 2:47man of the house saying these last have wrought or labored,
- 2:51but one hour and thou Hast made them equal unto us which have
- 2:55borne the burden and heat of the day.
- 2:58Such comments throughout the householders.
- 3:00Gentle rebuke friend, I do thee, no wrong didst not thou agree
- 3:05with me for a penny a Denarius take that thine is and go thy
- 3:09way. I will give unto this last even
- 3:12as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do
- 3:15what I will with mine? Own is thine eye evil because I
- 3:19am good. Well, Jesus does not say what
- 3:21the reaction of the laborers was following this correction this
- 3:25Parable forces us as Disciples of Iced to re-evaluate our
- 3:29expectations regarding the nature of the blessings.
- 3:32God offers and gives to all his children.
- 3:35While in a mortal economy, it would make sense to expect, more
- 3:39pay for more hours of work. Such is not the order of Heaven,
- 3:43those who enter the Covenant path, at the start of the day
- 3:46and work with the Lord will be just as blessed as those who
- 3:50enter the Covenant path at Twilight heads.
- 3:53Not only will the last be first, and the first last But the first
- 3:58will be equal to the last and the last will be equal to the
- 4:01first as Giada Jeanne Welsh of observed.
- 4:05Because of the Lord's goodness, those who are hired at the
- 4:08beginning of the day, should in no way.
- 4:10Feel slighted, just as promised they have received their pay,
- 4:15rather all can Rejoice together in the fact that the Lord is so
- 4:19merciful that he would offer the same blessings to all people who
- 4:23have come and labored for him. Some who have studied this
- 4:27Parable. See this as referring
- 4:28allegorically to the Gentiles who will readily accept and
- 4:32follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.
- 4:34First While the Jews and the house of Israel will come last
- 4:37because they will be slow to recognize him.
- 4:40Well, that is a possible reading John and Jenni Welch, note that,
- 4:44in this context, Jesus was more likely thinking of disciples who
- 4:47had followed him from day one, as opposed to others would come
- 4:51along in the second and third years of Jesus ministry.
- 4:55Furthermore, it is also possible that this meaning could be
- 4:58expanded to show that the disciples who joined at the
- 5:02first hour, could be understood as the Lord's.
- 5:05In the first dispensation with successive, dispensations of the
- 5:09Gospel being brought to pass as the Lord visits again and calls
- 5:13new profits in Doctrine and Covenants, section. 88 verses
- 5:1751, through 61 the Lord describes how he works with his
- 5:21disciples at the various hours of the day, when the Lord visits
- 5:25each servant, they enjoyed the light of the countenance of
- 5:28their Lord. In this scenario, those who work
- 5:31with the Lord, in the first hour could possibly represent Eden
- 5:34and the Dispensation of Adam the 11th Hour as evidenced in
- 5:38Doctrine and Covenants section 33, verse 3 would be the latter
- 5:42days Preparatory to the 12th hour and second coming of the
- 5:45Lord ultimately this. Parable demonstrates, God's love
- 5:49Justice. And mercy towards his children,
- 5:52he loves all his children and desires that they will come to
- 5:55him and he is continually at work in his Vineyard calling
- 5:59others to join him in his work, especially as any time is
- 6:02running out and the needs and opportunities.
- 6:05These for Success are growing more critical this Parable.
- 6:08Likewise demonstrates that God is a god of covenants.
- 6:12As such he will always honor his promises.
- 6:15He will just lie reward. All who have covenanted with him
- 6:19and have worked to keep their covenants In Deed.
- 6:22Covenants are Central to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and all
- 6:25people are invited to make these sacred covenants as they
- 6:29participate in ordinances of the gospel, and fulfill the will of
- 6:32the father Just as the laborers in this, Parable joined at
- 6:36various times of the day and each was generously given the
- 6:39same reward people over. The centuries who joined the
- 6:42Covenant path at various times. Will be equally rewarded indeed.
- 6:47The Lord knows that those who were hired in the late afternoon
- 6:51had spent the entire day waiting patiently in the marketplace.
- 6:54Hoping that someone would give them the opportunity.
- 6:57They longed for to join the Lord and to thrust in their sickles
- 7:01with all their might mercifully heavenly.
- 7:04Father is most interested in what we become in this life as
- 7:07we progress along the Covenant path of the Plan of Salvation
- 7:10that leads to life eternal, how fast?
- 7:14How soon, how proficiently we move?
- 7:16Is not the issue. God, cares, much less about
- 7:19where we stand then, where we are headed and light of all
- 7:24that. This Parable teaches us about
- 7:25the Lord. Elder Jeffrey.
- 7:27Are Holland. Explained this Parable like all
- 7:30Parables is not really about laborers or wages.
- 7:34Any more than the others are about sheep.
- 7:36And goats this is a story about God's goodness his patience and
- 7:42forgiveness and the atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 7:45It is a story about generosity and compassion.
- 7:48It is a story about Grace, it underscores.
- 7:51The thought I heard many years ago.
- 7:53That surely the thing God enjoys most about being.
- 7:56God is the thrill of being merciful especially to those who
- 8:01don't expect it and often feel they don't deserve it.
