- 0:40Welcome back to my hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:44commentary podcast. I am here with the Glorious.
- 0:49Toby hey doakes a hello Toby. Hello Joe the people call you
- 0:54glorious a lot. No will they shoot?
- 0:58Well God bless Toby, are you feeling bold enough to have
- 1:05another question thrown at you? About Doctor Who in the
- 1:07silurians? Throw me any questions that?
- 1:09You like okay, well, we did have a 15-minute conversation about
- 1:13Caribe licen. Before pressing play on a
- 1:15previous episode. However, Jim Allen B asks is
- 1:19Carrie blyton's music for this story easier to stomach that in
- 1:23death, to the Daleks, or revenge of the Cybermen.
- 1:26I want to know, if that's Jim Allen, be the former
- 1:28professional cricketer who used to score me enormous amounts of
- 1:31points in the fantasy cricket league that I still play to this
- 1:34day with Paul Cornell and to Paris other.
- 1:37But Steve, Hatchet, various other people.
- 1:39Not All of them connected with Doctor Who and it's I know it's
- 1:43not but it's just fun because I've seen this gym on Twitter,
- 1:47of course as well. Hello Jim.
- 1:50Thank you for your namesake scoring me.
- 1:51Some superb points in fantasy. In my Heyday.
- 1:55I've gone off a bit but I'm very confident in my team this year
- 1:59but you don't want to know that you want to know about Garrett.
- 2:02I think I think this is I think this is the most distinctive
- 2:07carrier, blindsquare. I love this sort of Dripping
- 2:09waters, you know, sound composition.
- 2:14That the company's the business in the caves I admire the Huts
- 2:17part of the, you know, robots indigestion.
- 2:22That is the, you know, pop in a blender that is the, you know,
- 2:29asthmatic kazoo, whatever you want to call it.
- 2:32You know. There there's this that the
- 2:34dying side And playing a harmonica.
- 2:36However, you want to describe that that particular entry and
- 2:40Anna, but I like it's I always admire something that as a bash
- 2:48that goes, you know, that instead of going well, let's
- 2:50just do what we always do you go.
- 2:52Well, it's Doctor Who. That's why don't we try playing
- 2:57it on a cyborgs comb and see what happens?
- 3:02That's teaching. But yeah.
- 3:05Why don't we try rubbing an it--come on a side of Man's
- 3:08Chest unit and see if it makes music be very out, a spirit in a
- 3:12big wind and I think I mean it is odd but I think, but I like
- 3:20kind of I associate it. So, with the story that I can't
- 3:25imagine the story without it and I and I think it gives the story
- 3:30a unique feel and I always like it when a doctor who story is
- 3:34kind of You know, you can kind of go with, it's not an
- 3:37identikit story, it's carved out its own its own Niche and I
- 3:41think and I don't think it robs the story of Madness in the way
- 3:48that I think the rather, you know, George from Rainbow having
- 3:53a conversation in with the moomins clarinet of death, to
- 3:58the goddess, who lose you? Be interested Daleks Little rump
- 4:07on the planet and you saw the guys this how you get a score
- 4:10the most terrifying creature, you should just going to go or
- 4:13quite fun and and revenge, I mean, they've has had a bit of
- 4:17augmentation itself as an exam they wheeled in Peter Howell to
- 4:21to augmented a bit. I mean, you know, again, I quite
- 4:24like the sort of scratchy wairau, you know, of the, of the
- 4:28cyber cyber mask. Yeah.
- 4:30But I don't think it's, I think it's a bit more of a generic,
- 4:35it's Generic score. Not done.
- 4:36Particularly well, I think revenge, it's fine.
- 4:41Whereas I think salarians isn't attempt to do something that
- 4:45isn't a generic score. So, even if it's not 100%
- 4:49perfect, I think it, you know, when something goes down in
- 4:52flames, it lights up the sky. You know what I mean?
- 4:55So, and I think that's how you should do it.
- 4:57So I think it's my favorite of the Caribe light and scores and
- 5:00I wouldn't have it any other way.
- 5:02You don't think if you ask any Doctor Who fan to hum, Um music
- 5:06from not maybe deep divers like you and me but you know the
- 5:10average Doctor Who fan too huh music from add ugly.
- 5:13Simpson score from other know the late groom their growing
- 5:16Williams era. They might have a bit of trouble
- 5:18but if you are seen Doctor Who fans who have the music from
- 5:21Doctor Who and the silurians I live in and have any trouble at
- 5:24all. Well yes and you I mean you can
- 5:26do this with a certain cognitive, dissonance.
- 5:28I mean, there's no doubt that Dudley Simpson was superb and
- 5:33you know, there's a reason they got him to school so much Doctor
- 5:35Who is He spoke, he spoke the tone and the tenor of Doctor Who
- 5:39fluently. But but a lot of his music is
- 5:41unobtrusive and you would go. Well, that's what incidental
- 5:44music should be. It's like the good Lighting in a
- 5:46theater show. It's only good.
- 5:48If you don't notice it, if it draws attention to itself, it's
- 5:51not really doing its job properly.
- 5:52It's being a little too self-conscious so I, you know,
- 5:55took from and I'm not a musician.
- 5:57So, so I understand from a musician's point of view who
- 5:59might go, well, the whole point of good incidental music is that
- 6:02it? You know, it underscores, it
- 6:05feeds it, Move. But you don't particularly
- 6:07distinct. You notice it and I couldn't hum
- 6:09you much Dudley Simpson at all. So in a way Dudley Simpson has
- 6:13done his job. But as somebody who's not
- 6:16musical who likes Doctor, Who and likes things that stick in
- 6:19my head, you know, I'm much more of a fan of those scores that
- 6:24stick out to me, that that have a sort of story to tell even
- 6:27though probably objectively those sort of identikit Simpsons
- 6:31scores of, you know, Genesis and pyramids and all of those, which
- 6:34are Which to me is slightly interchangeable and over again.
- 6:38I'm sure a proper musician would be able to go, oh no, because I
- 6:40think you'll find this is that and this is that or whatever and
- 6:43I think he's got to be the only whereas I hope nobody is putting
- 6:50this on to listen to as a soundtrack.
- 6:53Well, I hope they're not fucking down to this at the doctor's.
- 6:56Go down in down in there. I'm sure the Gallifrey Club in
- 7:01Brighton. I mean I'm sure there is one,
- 7:03I've never advised him blow. Whereas tried to Romancing with
- 7:07Carrie, blind, score, talk to the silurians.
- 7:11Have you ever tried to romance a bloke with any kind of Doctor
- 7:15Who phenomena jury? Well, my partner's Doctor Who
- 7:18fan now. So yeah.
- 7:21Yeah. I know, but was was, was Doctor
- 7:23Who a way of gaining access alluded in.
- 7:26We are lured him in, with the Android Invasion because I knew
- 7:29it was his favorite. Oh, really?
- 7:35I mean, that's Probably the only time or another has been used
- 7:42quite so far. I'm going to ask you some
- 8:01questions as we go because there's quite a few more.
- 8:04Go out because I can't think of anything else to say you won't
- 8:07count as in then in five four, three, two, one off we go.
- 8:15Okay, so Darren lit. Roundels says.
- 8:18I first saw the black and white version on UK gold and it made
- 8:21the story feel quite cozy. Something, I'm always drawn to
- 8:25the thing about the silurians is their representatives gray just
- 8:29as different in their ideas as human.
- 8:31That every story since has forgotten.
- 8:33And that therefore and over as perfect despite doing nothing to
- 8:38justify that response especially annoying since Warriors that are
- 8:41deep where the doctor rages against the humans for defending
- 8:44themselves. We don't we ask me.
- 8:47Well he's made a good 40 it. Yes.
- 8:49It's a very simplistic. Take they've sort of got the oh
- 8:54yes. This you know that the whole
- 8:55Twist of doctor and I salarians is that actually the salarians
- 8:58aren't bad and we are bad for blowing them up and they've
- 9:01transpose that idea into Warriors of the deep and then
- 9:05have the silurians do precisely nothing to the only thing.
- 9:09We've got to go on that. The solutions are nice.
- 9:10Is that the doctor keeps telling us but they do absolutely
- 9:14nothing to show that. So I mean it's it really falls
- 9:20down in that regard and I actually rather like worries of
- 9:22the deep, I think it's quite a fun sort of action-adventure
- 9:24rebase Under Siege kind of thing going on.
- 9:27I quite like kind of just got to sort of Johnny Morris and Johnny
- 9:31Morris choose that one for Happy Times.
- 9:32Yeah. Contrary bugger.
- 9:35Yeah. So does he know one of these two
- 9:38nurses, not that one. The other one is better enberg.
- 9:41It's not lemon is mate. I want to see.
- 9:45I face that one. That one it's just run in there.
- 9:48That's better in Berg. so you're never too old to learn Aya and
- 9:53now, but What we thought. Yeah.
- 9:59So, so, and, and then. And I thought that was the floor
- 10:02with the, with the, the silurian one.
- 10:08Hungry Earth was that again. You know, we were told that they
- 10:13would never but the captured silurians spent the whole thing.
- 10:17Trying to provoke the humans into killing and you go.
- 10:20Well, anybody reasonable to say well she just, I mean, she's
- 10:24essentially jumped on a gun that's not us.
- 10:26That's not us being genocide humans.
- 10:28That's, you know, that's, that's to get a script to a certain
- 10:32place and and then you have the doctor silurian guy who was
- 10:36basically dr. Mengele in.
- 10:37Yeah, then it's dr. Lovely at this.
- 10:43So for the for the purposes of the Cliffhanger is like
- 10:46brandishing a scalpel, right? And then he's the one that's
- 10:49trusted broker in P time at what is coming on.
- 10:52And I I'm afraid, you know, for characters that are called old
- 10:56young and scientist. In this, there's they've got
- 10:59more character than the ones you've got space names in in the
- 11:04in the in the chimney or two part I'm afraid and Darren lit.
- 11:09Roundels asked a dozen she's If we ask a question, he says just
- 11:13one question. Where are you going?
- 11:18Oh, I love it. He adds greasy comb-over Falls
- 11:22over face. Well, I did at it so long ago
- 11:26since we did that it's not that long ago.
- 11:28We very briefly touched on it but not in a lot of depth.
- 11:31But did we talk about how in the making of documentary?
- 11:35Peter miles has more air when he's talking in the present-day
- 11:40about Doctor Who in the series. That he has in the clips that
- 11:42they cut two of him in. Why that is, but I adore Peter
- 11:49miles in this. I think he's so good.
- 11:54I still think that's one of the best deaths it is in its this
- 11:59entire show it's an actor, not dying attractively, it's great
- 12:03fun dying attractively, you know, a good death scene can
- 12:06make you all Noble and you know vulnerable but in a kind of a
- 12:11god, he's moved us you know you can get you can get points for
- 12:13moving an audience because you died.
- 12:15So sadly and nobly and it's and it's mother.
- 12:17Can you know it's a great thing for Atkins.
- 12:20CET doctor to do to. Get look at me being so Noble
- 12:23and comfortable that it actually takes a I think a really
- 12:26selfless actor to go. No I'm going to I'm going to
- 12:28make death look awkward and horrible and uncomfortable
- 12:32because actually, physical violence does look like that.
- 12:36An uncomfortable situations that are uncomfortable because
- 12:40they're ungainly and awkward this stuff in the station is
- 12:44eyes. Maisie, isn't it?
- 12:46Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:47All of this film work that Tim Combe does in In in this room
- 12:51and this this has a scale. That's a modern-day scale that
- 12:55if you think how often doctors been in the modern day up to
- 12:58this point, that that you then get spearhead with its High
- 13:02Street Massacre. And then this with its, you
- 13:04know, death of a train station and Trevor Ray their the
- 13:08assistant to script editor who was no mean actor.
- 13:10He doesn't amazing thing, sort of facepalm in a minute.
- 13:14Yeah. When it when it, yeah, it's
- 13:16definitely fuck's the, you know, strange, I think actually this
- 13:19does It convincingly sells the idea of the the plague spreading
- 13:25better than the first episode of survivors.
- 13:27I was quite surprised actually, how sort of in homes that was?
- 13:33Yes, I think the first episode of survivors is very effective
- 13:36but you're right. It does a slightly different
- 13:38thing. It's kind of its you become
- 13:41aware of the extent of it from a small nucleus whereas this
- 13:46actually spreads it out with that, he doesn't get a credit on
- 13:49this but that's Ian Evans, who is who is die the minor in in
- 13:54the green death and he's also the the Exelon with the booming
- 13:58singing voice in that, the excellent high priest.
- 14:00Oh, and I think he died on the 23rd of November.
- 14:06He died on dr. Seuss birthday.
- 14:07I think would you know, my son is unusual for Doctor Who to
- 14:10take the expensive route. So instead of just going always
- 14:13go at, you know, he's gone on a train and he's got in a taxi and
- 14:17he's had contact with all these people know.
- 14:19We're actually gonna, we're gonna Head off to Mary Boleyn
- 14:21station or wherever they are. We?
- 14:22Yeah, whole thing looks so great and and when the camera pans out
- 14:26so you can see it from a yeah you can see it from a sort of
- 14:29distance and you don't really need to say something in over
- 14:34scary, it's really good. It's really good.
- 14:38It's got its got a great sense of scale about it and and and I
- 14:42and a kind of sets of but I get on a train, I go to Treasure
- 14:46Coast is what I could get on a train one down and just be in a
- 14:48carriage with this guy and I'm Dead.
- 14:51That's horrible. I think I think whatever fiction
- 14:54reminds me of the, you know, how easy germs can spread its or is
- 14:58scary. But yeah, this is this is the
- 15:00series that not that long ago was doing the croutons, I loved
- 15:07the croutons but but You know, it's it it's sophistication is
- 15:14somewhat limited. Can, you can see why this
- 15:16captured people can t, you can see what sort of pulled away at
- 15:20the end. Of six might have come along and
- 15:22say, wow, this is much more sophisticated with, I love the
- 15:2560s, I love trap and I love black and white zipper.
- 15:29This is a Renaissance. The the launch of the Pertwee
- 15:31era is a Renaissance for the show.
- 15:35And you know, Derek Sherman wasn't around long but he did he
- 15:38did totally The show from what it was in to what it became
- 15:44very. Very effectively.
- 15:45And and and and I think, you know, it was on borrowed time
- 15:49and this gave it a whole new lease of life.
- 15:53I've got a, I've got a little statement from Lisa, Nicole
- 15:57about the story, and she's always, Hello Lucy.
- 16:01I like the tension between the voices for peace on both sides
- 16:04and those in favor of Destruction, which turns out to
- 16:07be the stronger in the end. I know the Brigadier.
- 16:09Is criticized for sealing the silurians in, but given
- 16:12everything. It was always going to happen.
- 16:15The plague part is really frightening.
- 16:17It takes the drama from the slightly, Fantastical setting of
- 16:20the lab and caves to the real world.
- 16:23The cast is great. Peter miles has what must be one
- 16:26of the best ever moments in. There's nothing wrong with all.
- 16:30Sorry Haley he has one of the best ever.
- 16:32There's nothing wrong with me moments in all of Science
- 16:35Fiction and false McKay is nicely Shifty.
- 16:39So yes, I A lot and I'll stop now before I review the whole
- 16:42lot, that's very nicely put loose ball.
- 16:46True, David G asks, is hello are you a cycler in one of the most
- 16:51dr. Ish moments in the whole series
- 16:53with kind of. Yeah, it is and I think but I
- 16:56think it's also matched by, you know, hello gentlemen, or
- 16:59whatever it is, where he comes in, at speaks to the three of
- 17:01them, okay? Episodes later, he's very good
- 17:06at impassivity, Peter miles, you know, he's He's not moving many
- 17:10muscles in his face, you know, it's all in the eyes.
- 17:15The rest of him is fairly deadpan.
- 17:19I mean, this this this huge things at stake for him here.
- 17:22Isn't he knows of this has sold, then his career is down the pan.
- 17:28You know. And, you know, I have to say, I
- 17:30met Peter, the miles he was bat is a fruitcake.
- 17:33I met Paul Darrow. He was a, he was a loon and I
- 17:37have to say, and it's why I don't sort of put much that
- 17:43serious on social media. There's a real earnestness these
- 17:46days that Tips feel the need to do.
- 17:49So to go, you know, I'm in that television programs so that and
- 17:52I know that people need to use a platform to do good.
- 17:55I totally understand that. But do you know what, I kind of
- 17:59miss the fact that that the acting profession that I was
- 18:02sort of drawn to be a part of was part of that draw, was
- 18:06because everyone was a bit of a kick bunkers and you had a great
- 18:11and people would throw stories and be Indiscreet, and there was
- 18:14a certain amount of You know, and sometimes not, not very
- 18:20nice, but sort of had to, and sometimes not very nice to be on
- 18:22the receiving end of, but it was kind of rite of passage.
- 18:26But I kind of, you know, it's one of the reasons I love
- 18:30meeting all of these. These, you know, these these
- 18:34venerable old fest sewer. Sadly now a Dying Breed because
- 18:38it's a certain amount of barking - that is hugely enjoyable and
- 18:45great fun. And but that's that sort of
- 18:47creative. Park that then when I can be
- 18:50used to give some sort of interesting and fun performances
- 18:52who's this Joe? Who's this Soldier?
- 18:55Tell me this is private Evans from the driver Evans from the
- 19:01web of fear. We got it is to who you know.
- 19:04It's I'm so pleased. They didn't make him the same
- 19:06one just to kill him. Almost immediately, is it just
- 19:09this one sunnis in? Yeah, pretty much.
- 19:11Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:14So I'm sure she's a little pissed about an interview with
- 19:18Mervin haseman saying that, you know, when they were considering
- 19:22doing unit as a regular thing, they'd given a thought to
- 19:25Bringing Evans back. But at decided not to because it
- 19:28would be cruel of the Welsh. So, instead, he gets to do that
- 19:32and this and, and this is recognized him.
- 19:36Who's that? With a moustache?
- 19:37He's the one who's in charge of the prison in episode 2 of the
- 19:41war games. He's and he's also the Geordie
- 19:50guard in Mark of the Rani. Lord is it.
- 19:55But Lord, you know, Terrance Alexander's sort of guard guy
- 19:59who gets ya, various bits and Bobs to do and he's also, I've
- 20:03just been so he's also an extra in quatermass in the pit.
- 20:05You can see him, Richard Steele. He's called so yeah, he doesn't
- 20:09like that scene in the war games is Heaven is a great father.
- 20:13How dare you treat me like this? Oh they're about the inherent
- 20:23lunacy of the actors of the time.
- 20:26Do you think perhaps people toe the line now?
- 20:30Because there is a sort of immediacy in people reacting to
- 20:34having met people and you know because of social media we
- 20:38obviously wasn't as relevant back then was it, you know, you
- 20:41can argue could You could, you could be an asshole in a green
- 20:44room and there would be no evidence of it and it would be
- 20:47forgotten the next day. Now, unfortunately, we, you
- 20:50know, we scrutinize a now. This is not to say that we have
- 20:53an also wiped out, loads of really bad behavior.
- 20:56And some, you know, some quite toxic behavior of course,
- 20:59particularly from, you know, people in positions of power,
- 21:03particularly from Men, in positions of power, I get up,
- 21:07I'm not talking about that. I'm not going.
- 21:09Oh yes. We should be able to have
- 21:10directors forcing themselves on young women.
- 21:12It I don't mean that, but we should also was getting rid of
- 21:15that. We should also be able to Coop.
- 21:17Keep Peter Miles, because bat is a fruit cake.
- 21:25Is completely been wiped out. Sorry, I can't imagine that
- 21:29eccentricities. No, I don't think it hasn't.
- 21:31It's all about, it's all about balance and I certainly don't
- 21:36want to be a poet. Was better in the old days
- 21:38because it cuz cuz we have we have loads of great actors.
- 21:41Now, we have loads of interesting.
- 21:42Characters and all sorts of stuff.
- 21:44I just I don't know. I was just just watching miles
- 21:49there and thinking about Darrow. I was I was thinking how sort of
- 21:55Ernest things have got these days but the pendulum swings and
- 21:59and of course all of that stuff has been bred from a need to
- 22:04chip make certain changes within the industry.
- 22:06I'm I'm not blind to that nor am I undermining that but Sorry, to
- 22:13interrupt you at. How economic is this
- 22:15storytelling here? Oh, it's brilliant.
- 22:17I love a montage. We didn't come from the
- 22:19Brigadier on the phone. The doctor with a test.
- 22:21Choose to the station, where people die.
- 22:23Did you see the shot as well behind the cat?
- 22:25The ambulance? Yeah.
- 22:27Again, and I thought initially, I thought that was a stop shot
- 22:30and then it stops by a load of corpuses.
- 22:32I'm like, I'm not they feel that.
- 22:34No. And then there's this bit with
- 22:36with Masters is death where you get the railings and it goes one
- 22:40way and he goes the other way and the screen Aiming woman is
- 22:43Michael aspel, zechs wife, Elizabeth power, who was the
- 22:47woman that had an affair with Arthur Fowler in EastEnders.
- 22:49There you go, you can have that for free meals.
- 22:51Whatever, what was the name? Mrs. Whatever.
- 22:54She was called. What was she called?
- 22:55I don't know. I remember vividly, though.
- 22:58Why can't I bring my name? Welcome basically.
- 23:00Remember Pauline knocking him out with a saucepan.
- 23:02Yeah, but I love that death of and I it's little things like
- 23:07the fact it's obviously filmed either early in the morning or
- 23:09when it's really cool. You can see his breath, you
- 23:12know, those Little bits of things that just make it, he
- 23:14remembered that shot. Tim comb, you know, because when
- 23:16Benson collapses in the mind of evil, he goes beyond raelians
- 23:19again, doesn't it? Yeah.
- 23:21And it's nice and it gives you because of the way that the
- 23:23camera can't quite process, the picture, it gives it a woozy
- 23:27kind of quality about it. It's very statement of drama to
- 23:31it as well, shooting From Below like that.
- 23:34Here we go about with test tubes but perfectly I have to say is
- 23:38damn good. All of this, this kind of
- 23:40business the It sounds trite to say and I'm really don't mean to
- 23:45me having somebody that's really that looks really convincing
- 23:49squeezing things into test tubes and using a microscope.
- 23:54Is, you know, it could so easily be undermined.
- 23:57Yeah, by an actor without Pertwee, sort of Panache and
- 24:01Knack. He's a very capable man.
- 24:03You know, you can imagine he would jump on a motorbike and
- 24:05immediately know how to drive it.
- 24:06You can you can imagine you could you know throw him a piece
- 24:09of broken food processor and he be able to have a look at it,
- 24:11work at a minute, he he carries all of this stuff with a sort of
- 24:16effortless skill that isn't showy that isn't that isn't
- 24:20demonstrative. It's just a sort of innate.
- 24:23To that you kind of need from the doctor which which makes you
- 24:27feel reassured in these moments of Jeopardy.
- 24:30That, you know, he could do all of this stuff and he looks he
- 24:33looks like a real Pro property when I was watching curse upheld
- 24:36on. Yes.
- 24:36All right. There's a sequence there where
- 24:37Arcturus is happened, a bit of a nervous breakdown and portrays
- 24:40there in the guts of this thing. Clearly just yet stabbing it
- 24:44with a screwdriver or something Allah.
- 24:45But with so much conviction. Yeah.
- 24:48All you can think about doing death to the Daleks episode 4.
- 24:51Where is giving the city a nervous breakdown is Pulling
- 24:54out, all these bits of circuits and just doing little you
- 24:57absolutely convinced. Yeah.
- 24:59He's really good at all of that stuff.
- 25:01And you know what else he does? He does a wonderful thing for
- 25:03the kids where she gives him the shot and he oh yeah it was
- 25:07Agony. Yeah, love it.
- 25:10Yeah, it's fantastic. Ha ha ha.
- 25:13But you know I really like the scenes of the two of them
- 25:17working together on like a scientific problem.
- 25:20I don't see what doesn't work about Yes, no, I really like it
- 25:25too. And, you know, Liz, there's
- 25:28still managed to get into Jeopardy.
- 25:29You know, she still managed to get kidnapped, but and, you
- 25:33know, and Joe, as you say wasn't useless, it wasn't that, you
- 25:37know, we traded lives in for somebody incompetent, Joe is
- 25:40Scotty and funky, but she's also an escape ologist who's, you
- 25:44know, who's got the smart. So in comparison mischel's
- 25:48there, you know, being brainy and helping out and things
- 25:50whereas jove sort of spills the Fungus over the slides and
- 25:55that's how discover the you know it's almost I kind of like that
- 26:01as well. I do like I always feel that the
- 26:05doctor should sort of save the universe that the whole ethos of
- 26:08Doctor Who is that? We saved the universe by
- 26:10mistake. Not because I've just been
- 26:13watching the Mandalorian before we got to get through.
- 26:15We got together tonight and I it's part is lovely.
- 26:18It's very works extremely well done but it is all very again.
- 26:23It's I know the way we have the way and I shall go where top of
- 26:27the mountain, and it's all a bit kind of it takes, it's all quite
- 26:31serious. And what I sort of like about
- 26:32Doctor Who is that, even if you're it's life and death, and
- 26:36I'm not saying it should be unserious in that, it should
- 26:38wink at the audience and undermined that, but it has at
- 26:42its heart. A sort of adherence to the idea
- 26:47that we get through things because of Plucky, improvisation
- 26:53or Or or accidental hutzpah rather than, because we're so
- 26:58effing amazing. Because I can't identify with
- 27:01somebody who's brilliant? Because that's not how I feel.
- 27:03I can identify with somebody or give it their best shot.
- 27:07Hopefully get it right here. He is Peter miles.
- 27:12Look at salute. You, it's fantastic.
- 27:20And it's only like, you know, little bits of color in a few
- 27:22bits of latex. Left it, Dry.
- 27:23And then sort of plucked to be also a man key.
- 27:29And this is exactly unflappable. Art is still completely in
- 27:33character, isn't it? Yeah.
- 27:35And I remember being surprised this because in the book he just
- 27:38he survives till episode 7, essentially in the book and when
- 27:41the salarians come in and sort of say, you know, you'll get out
- 27:44do this or do that and he just goes no and they disintegrate
- 27:47him that a and then miss Travis. Who's is a system?
- 27:50Which helps to save the day. So he yeah he just gets
- 27:53disintegrated by the silurians whereas I am gang.
- 27:58It's great. I didn't it links up on the
- 28:01fucking table. Yeah.
- 28:03And tries to throw the drink a day Yeah, yeah, look as its, I
- 28:12love this and I do and I know some people who would watch that
- 28:16and go, oh, that's just ridiculous.
- 28:17Death is ridiculous. Violence is ridiculous.
- 28:20It's not, it's not precise, it's not choreographed.
- 28:25And I think it's a brave actor that does that I'm I'm full of
- 28:28admiration, which it was so satisfying about it is is
- 28:31basically we've been waiting six episodes for him to lose his
- 28:34temper. Yeah, is kept it all simmer in
- 28:37under, that's the other thing. Yeah.
- 28:39It's it's not that, it's that sort of provide, it's not that
- 28:41he's been at 11 for the whole thing.
- 28:44And this is just the natural progression of that.
- 28:45He, this has been simmering and it's fun.
- 28:48That's the scene where it boils, and it's fantastic.
- 28:53Oh and we get another great Cliffhanger as well because he's
- 28:55now got the Cure. So her are everyone's going to
- 28:59be saved and that's what I mean. And kidnapping, it's the sort of
- 29:03equivalent of major Baker. Are coming in just at the wrong
- 29:06moment. Yes.
- 29:07And coming in at just that the Roma.
- 29:08Now, we've got the site. Look, we've upped it again, and
- 29:10I'll get another episode out of this yet, baby.
- 29:13I'll tell ya. Although, it does give the
- 29:17Nicholas Courtney a chance to someone who's very good on a
- 29:19telephone. You know, he really convinces
- 29:21me. It.
- 29:22Go pick up the phone and goes the daily W.
- 29:24Yes. Reporter.
- 29:28I don't they in that. Who killed Kennedy Brooke.
- 29:30Yeah. Isn't it the reporter?
- 29:33I like this effect as All the, the burning through in the white
- 29:37top. I love the whole thing of the,
- 29:39you know, that this is Justin that it's sort of organic
- 29:42manipulation from these creatures that are sort of of
- 29:45the earth, you know, I like that that's sort of suggested without
- 29:48being sort of dwelt upon or have a big speech about and I love
- 29:52that again, the Silhouettes of them coming through the smoke.
- 29:55I feel like it's brilliant visual watching.
- 29:58This case are really looking at the visuals now rather than
- 30:00listening to it and how the lights are kept out there.
- 30:04Very often in silhouette and very effective for it.
- 30:08That wrote that the ambulance man who is recovering is Dave
- 30:11Carter the old silurian. There we go.
- 30:14They've taken him out of his rub.
- 30:15Its rubber costume, and stuck him in bed.
- 30:17Going well with. We paid you for this week and
- 30:20you go, I love this dialogue. Here, they're basically sets up
- 30:23what's going to happen, right? All they need is the formula
- 30:26now, right? I'll go and get it though, and
- 30:30arrows, great at that stuff, as he just done a, the silurians
- 30:32are everywhere. They've killed, Sergeant Tarts.
- 30:34And I Let's do it next week where he goes, private Upton's
- 30:37dead, you know, and it's not private Upton who we've never
- 30:42met, you know, but it gives it a real, you know, the silurians
- 30:45they're everywhere. He's his Steely voice means that
- 30:49all of that stuff has real impact.
- 30:51He could have just run in and went my wife has been added, oh
- 30:58I love Darrow, I'll never know. What do you think this?
- 31:07This acting star was ever involved, people.
- 31:10And you guys, as far as I'm concerned, it never went away.
- 31:14These are, the music goes insane here as they come through the
- 31:18door. Yeah, of course, one last gun
- 31:24from Bowie. Yeah.
- 31:27Yeah. It's a shame.
- 31:28It's not, it's not, it's not a great shot that sadly, her.
- 31:32She's that. You think you may be watched a
- 31:33few of went. Oh, I need to Stop.
- 31:35No because he never quite you never quite loses the gun does
- 31:37he? I don't think he ever talks when
- 31:39he is been strangled by those tentacles in spearhead from
- 31:43space because that cameras. So in his face.
- 31:45Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 31:48It's a, it's a shame that he never.
- 31:51That's, that's maybe his Achilles his Achilles, he is
- 31:55Achilles next, which although the sides did the telephone
- 32:00wires in Terror of the autons as well?
- 32:01Uh, yeah. Yeah.
- 32:03Uh, pretty effective. Well, Toby, I've saved all the
- 32:07last episode questions for the last episode because obviously
- 32:10people have some things to say about the brigadier's actions.
- 32:14Yeah, yes. So should we skip into episode 7
- 32:18and find out what people have got to ask?
- 32:20Yeah, I mean we're talking about episode endings.
- 32:24I listen to a hamster with a blunt penknife and sometimes the
- 32:27episodes just now, giving you a name
- 32:48I love it. Anyone can go and we will be
- 32:53more Shenanigans in Wembley more.
- 32:55Next time, I thought I had fun. Sometimes I go to the bit where
- 32:59I go and I'll cut it there. A lotta believably, I'll
- 33:05actually Better Than I Used to Be he's to be absolutely
- 33:07atrocious, but
