- 0:08Speaker 1: All right, hello and welcome to the third episode of
- 0:11Speaker 1: Twin Cities Territory, our brand new Minnesota Twins podcast here
- 0:16Speaker 1: on the Foul Territory Network. I am Zach Pierce with
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Athletics Stan Hayes, and joined it today for the
- 0:22Speaker 1: first time by the man who brings our total Major
- 0:25Speaker 1: league experience across the pedel up to ten years.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Tyler Duffy, Ladies, jolemen.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Tyler, thanks for joining us.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Absolutely, I'm glad to be here and be a part
- 0:34Speaker 2: of something cool.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Oh you're the wrong place for cool man, This is
- 0:39Speaker 3: not cool. You changed that factor for us. At least
- 0:43Speaker 3: that's good. We appreciate you being here. We are now
- 0:45Speaker 3: a little bit cooler, but yeah, I agree with we are.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Tyler. Of course twins pitcher for eight years also with
- 0:54Speaker 1: the Cubs and Royals, and I'm still in the game
- 0:57Speaker 1: as well, and we're happy he's here joining us. A
- 1:00Speaker 1: lot to talk about, guys, after this first weekend, Twins
- 1:03Speaker 1: go one and two in Baltimore. Some bright spots, some
- 1:07Speaker 1: question marks, kind of what we expected I think across
- 1:10Speaker 1: the board. I guess let's start with you, Dan, for
- 1:14Speaker 1: some of your takeaways from those first three games.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Well, it's crazy to me. I mean, look, I think
- 1:21Speaker 3: you and I talked about it on the first season
- 1:24Speaker 3: preview that this team was going to be still interesting
- 1:28Speaker 3: despite what everybody wanted to say about it. There's a
- 1:30Speaker 3: lot of things on this team that will be interesting
- 1:32Speaker 3: to watch throughout the year. And I think they showed
- 1:36Speaker 3: that there's more to them than a team that's just
- 1:38Speaker 3: you know, essentially a seventy five million dollar payroll group
- 1:41Speaker 3: right now, because there is some talent here. And despite
- 1:45Speaker 3: playing their sloppiest game of the season on Sunday, they
- 1:49Speaker 3: were in it. Though they had chances the whole way.
- 1:51Speaker 3: You know, they had bases loaded and struck out three
- 1:54Speaker 3: times to the bases loaded and eight another one of
- 1:56Speaker 3: those things Twins fans love, and then had the time
- 1:59Speaker 3: runs on the ninth and and despite running into three outs,
- 2:03Speaker 3: despite having some some batter challenges that were poor Reeds,
- 2:10Speaker 3: despite having you know, their piggyback go wrong, they were
- 2:14Speaker 3: in that game. And that was after a really nice
- 2:16Speaker 3: win on Saturday. They played really well those first two games,
- 2:20Speaker 3: and even as sloppy as yesterday was, they were in it.
- 2:23Speaker 3: So I thought they were them being as competitive they were,
- 2:28Speaker 3: you know, last year in Saint Louis was a total
- 2:29Speaker 3: disaster to start the season, and this was they got
- 2:32Speaker 3: swept in Saint Louis. Twins very easily could have walked
- 2:35Speaker 3: out of Baltimore with a series win. I liked a
- 2:38Speaker 3: lot of seeing some of the guys answer questions. You know.
- 2:42Speaker 3: The Royce Lewis weekend was very That was about as
- 2:46Speaker 3: peak as it could be for the Twins. They need
- 2:49Speaker 3: him desperately. The bullpen showed up on Saturday. That was
- 2:54Speaker 3: really good to see because we were gonna wonder what
- 2:57Speaker 3: they're gonna give them all year, and Challenges.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Was seeing Challenges in play was wild, like just wild,
- 3:07Speaker 4: and the fan reaction at Baltimore wasn't even close to
- 3:10Speaker 4: what it was I think in Cincinnati with Jhanio Suarez
- 3:14Speaker 4: with his his couple of bats.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I mean, challenges are going to change this game. It's
- 3:19Speaker 3: not slowing it down, it's actually speeding it up. We
- 3:22Speaker 3: saw that a couple of times. And whereas instant replay
- 3:26Speaker 3: in the NFL I think just takes away from the
- 3:29Speaker 3: product in some ways, Challenges is fun and fans were
- 3:33Speaker 3: into it. So it was pretty interesting weekend and you know,
- 3:38Speaker 3: fortunately unfortunately for the Twins. They lost that that third game,
- 3:41Speaker 3: but I think that they go to Kansas City and
- 3:44Speaker 3: feel pretty good about where they are.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Tyler as a as a pitcher. Very curious for your
- 3:51Speaker 1: take on the Challenge system and what you've seen so
- 3:53Speaker 1: far from the first weekend.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I you know, funny enough, I got to experience
- 3:59Speaker 2: it for parts of two years before this because they
- 4:02Speaker 2: put it into the minor leagues and so we had
- 4:05Speaker 2: the full ABS days where it's like there's no even
- 4:08Speaker 2: a negotiation, like you throw in that's right there, it's
- 4:12Speaker 2: a ball, and so you know, got games with seventeen
- 4:15Speaker 2: walks happened things like that. So like the full ABS is.
- 4:18Speaker 2: But being able to know, like as a pitcher or
- 4:21Speaker 2: a catcher, as a hitter, like I know that's not
- 4:24Speaker 2: a strike where I know that was this. It's great
- 4:27Speaker 2: to be able to just say hey quickly, like no sir,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and just get it right and then move on with
- 4:32Speaker 2: the game. Like and it is funny. You know we
- 4:34Speaker 2: were talking the emotional side of it. It's gonna get
- 4:37Speaker 2: guys all year. They're gonna try to keep it from happening.
- 4:40Speaker 2: But there's guys I remember vividly, like I throw a
- 4:44Speaker 2: great pitch and like the guy just couldn't believe it.
- 4:46Speaker 2: He didn't swing, and so he challenges it and it's
- 4:48Speaker 2: middle middle, and it's just like man, sorry, you know,
- 4:51Speaker 2: it's one of those things. But yeah, it's uh, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 2: I think, like Dan said, it speeds it up. It
- 4:57Speaker 2: gets things right, and it doesn't delay anything, and it
- 5:00Speaker 2: does get a little rise or a little upset or
- 5:02Speaker 2: you know, happiness from the crowd you know that maybe
- 5:04Speaker 2: wouldn't be there anyways. It's like a fifty to fifty
- 5:07Speaker 2: raffle in the middle of it at bat.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Basically, it's it's remarkably entertaining, and I think it's my favorite.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I said this yesterday. I think it's my favorite challenge
- 5:19Speaker 1: system in sports already because it's one thing when you
- 5:23Speaker 1: you know, like when they're challenging a play at a
- 5:24Speaker 1: base and they go to the umpire gestures to the
- 5:27Speaker 1: coach or the manager and the dugout and they say
- 5:29Speaker 1: hold on a minute, and they look at their monitor
- 5:30Speaker 1: and then they go, no, I don't want to challenge that.
- 5:33Speaker 1: This is all the player in the moment and they
- 5:34Speaker 1: have to decide right away and they only get to
- 5:36Speaker 1: be wrong twice for their entire team throughout a game,
- 5:39Speaker 1: so that just you have the the you know, I
- 5:41Speaker 1: don't know, arrogance maybe to say no, this pitch I'm
- 5:45Speaker 1: going to use one on. It's pretty crazy.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely one. You know, you can see a
- 5:53Speaker 2: lot of things happening, but especially you get burned early
- 5:56Speaker 2: and use them up and then late in the game,
- 5:58Speaker 2: like it makes you wander to conversations, you know, maybe postgame.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Maybe a guy use one in the second inning for
- 6:04Speaker 2: just a no out call, and then the ninth rolls
- 6:07Speaker 2: around and you didn't have one and you could have
- 6:10Speaker 2: used it. Like, they're probably gonna be some guys getting
- 6:12Speaker 2: aired out, whether it's teammates or coaches or something. I
- 6:15Speaker 2: could see you down the road, a story popping up somewhere.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Yeah, look, there's definitely guidelines with the twins they're trying
- 6:24Speaker 3: to put in place. I think the first the deferral
- 6:27Speaker 3: mode is let's leave them for Jeffers and Caratini as
- 6:31Speaker 3: much as possible because and I loved to why I
- 6:34Speaker 3: heard from Joe Ryan and spring training about it. Joe
- 6:37Speaker 3: Ryan said, when I'm pitching, and Tyler, you can probably
- 6:39Speaker 3: test this when I'm pitching there's so much going on
- 6:42Speaker 3: whipping around that my head's moving, my body's moving. I
- 6:45Speaker 3: should not be the one to issue that challenge, which
- 6:49Speaker 3: is why the Ryan Helsley challenge in the ninth inning
- 6:51Speaker 3: was kind of shocking because the pitcher initiated it. But
- 6:55Speaker 3: the catcher is the preferred method, and then the team,
- 7:00Speaker 3: as far as the hitters go, they want their hitters
- 7:03Speaker 3: in the right situations. And we saw it with Las
- 7:06Speaker 3: Dias on Saturday. I think it was where Josh Bell
- 7:11Speaker 3: thought that there was a one in his first at bat,
- 7:13Speaker 3: but he didn't challenge it and asked him afterwards, and
- 7:15Speaker 3: Josh Bell said he hadn't seen that pitch yet this
- 7:20Speaker 3: series and so he wasn't sure. He didn't have his
- 7:23Speaker 3: internal zone on it whether or not to challenge. But
- 7:27Speaker 3: the next time up, he was very certain that Las
- 7:30Speaker 3: missed a call and he challenged it and he was right.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Royce Lewis had one like that. Royce Lewis said he's
- 7:35Speaker 3: a little timid when it comes to it because the
- 7:38Speaker 3: situation wasn't really right for him to challenge. It was
- 7:40Speaker 3: one to zero pitch, it was up and end, it
- 7:42Speaker 3: was clearly a ball, and you know, so guys have
- 7:47Speaker 3: to figure out what they want to do with it.
- 7:49Speaker 3: It's funny because Matt Walner's challenge was exactly the kind
- 7:54Speaker 3: of moment you want to use it. As far as
- 7:57Speaker 3: three to two pitch bases loaded could be a walk
- 8:00Speaker 3: bringing a run. Matt Walner's read on that pitch was
- 8:04Speaker 3: the execution was not there. I mean that ball, that
- 8:07Speaker 3: ball was well in the zone. But I think they're
- 8:11Speaker 3: trying to get guys used to and be comfortable with
- 8:14Speaker 3: the idea of challenging at the right times. I'm gonna
- 8:17Speaker 3: always say catcher first, and then I want my guys
- 8:21Speaker 3: with elite eyes. Luis Riise, I'd let him challenge every
- 8:25Speaker 3: single time he wanted to. But also, you know game situation,
- 8:29Speaker 3: don't do it early on, like you're saying you want
- 8:31Speaker 3: to save it. We saw it come back and bite
- 8:33Speaker 3: the Twins in a wild game. I mean there were
- 8:35Speaker 3: probably I think there were six catcher challenges between the
- 8:39Speaker 3: two teams. Buston, you had Walner both and Bucks and
- 8:43Speaker 3: Walner both missed and lost their challenges, and that's why
- 8:46Speaker 3: the Twins were out of them. You had the Hellsley challenge.
- 8:50Speaker 3: There were nine challenges in the game. And I counted
- 8:53Speaker 3: at least two more that would have happened after the
- 8:55Speaker 3: Walner one where the twins would have challenged. And I
- 9:00Speaker 3: think Mick Abel got screwed on one pitch in the
- 9:02Speaker 3: very next batter after Walner, and it was a three
- 9:05Speaker 3: to one and it meant two guys were on base already,
- 9:08Speaker 3: and uh, you know, you you look at those spots
- 9:11Speaker 3: and it hurt them to be out of them. But
- 9:13Speaker 3: the dynamic is fascinating. I mean, we spent all weekend
- 9:16Speaker 3: talking about baseball, spent all weekend talking about it.
- 9:19Speaker 2: It felt like, yeah, I mean to your point about Bucks,
- 9:24Speaker 2: I remember that at bat and he challenged, didn't get it,
- 9:27Speaker 2: and then the next pitch was like a ball in
- 9:31Speaker 2: and he got called a strike on it, and it's
- 9:32Speaker 2: just like, in the moment, you're like, that is how
- 9:35Speaker 2: quickly it can change that bat, or you an inning,
- 9:38Speaker 2: or the whole game for that matter. It was just
- 9:39Speaker 2: like one pitch he thought was borderline wasn't, and then
- 9:42Speaker 2: the next one is a ball and he can't do
- 9:44Speaker 2: anything about it, and you're just like, your hands are
- 9:45Speaker 2: tied at that point. It's just a it's a very
- 9:48Speaker 2: it's it's gonna be a tough all. I don't think
- 9:50Speaker 2: it's ever gonna nobody's gonna be elite, like like you said, right,
- 9:53Speaker 2: you know, there's maybe Stephen Kwan. You know, those types
- 9:57Speaker 2: will be really good at it. But then like you know,
- 10:00Speaker 2: to these like we're talking earlier, the bigger guys in
- 10:02Speaker 2: the league, they have so much more zone to cover,
- 10:05Speaker 2: and it's just gonna be hard for some of them
- 10:06Speaker 2: to truly know that full you know, what is it
- 10:09Speaker 2: seventy whatever percent of your height, like unless they set
- 10:13Speaker 2: up ropes during VP and just like test it, you know, right.
- 10:17Speaker 3: No, And and I mean the Umps have tough Look
- 10:21Speaker 3: at Josh bell zone. I mean Josh Bell is a
- 10:23Speaker 3: big guy. He walked tall, you know, like he walked
- 10:28Speaker 3: twice in the ninth in and both times the pitch
- 10:30Speaker 3: was challenged and and you know he ends up striking
- 10:34Speaker 3: out and it was like he like, you know, the
- 10:37Speaker 3: one thing I think is great for you guys is
- 10:41Speaker 3: there's no ambiguity there anymore. You either you know it.
- 10:46Speaker 3: It's it's the questions are removed. And another thing that
- 10:49Speaker 3: we look, we got a lot of high profile instance
- 10:53Speaker 3: this weekend, but the newer Umps are really good at
- 10:57Speaker 3: this and the older guys, the ones that didn't come
- 11:00Speaker 3: up being challenged working with the abs their entire careers.
- 11:05Speaker 3: The older guys the last days is the Doug Eddings.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Did you guys see that one with Salvador calling three
- 11:11Speaker 3: straight fastballs at the bottom of the.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Zone and they just pulled them up.
- 11:18Speaker 3: The C. B. Buckner Like the older guys we've always
- 11:21Speaker 3: known because we've seen Angel Hernandez's strike zone was just atrocious, right,
- 11:25Speaker 3: And it's because they didn't come up on these zones
- 11:28Speaker 3: and and be tested on. So I think we're gonna
- 11:30Speaker 3: see this a little bit with the older guys this year,
- 11:33Speaker 3: and we'll see it. I mean, this wasn't yesterday's played.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Umpire was not a new guy. It wasn't you know,
- 11:39Speaker 3: Brian had Saturday's game right, So it was not an
- 11:43Speaker 3: old guy yesterday. So it's it's it's gonna be fun
- 11:46Speaker 3: to watch this year for sure, Tyler.
- 11:50Speaker 1: In your experience, how to umpires feel about it, Like,
- 11:54Speaker 1: on the one hand, it highlights how rarely they're wrong,
- 11:57Speaker 1: but when they are wrong, it becomes quite a spectacle.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I from my you know, like I said, the
- 12:04Speaker 2: minor league experience is different, you know, everybody's trying to
- 12:06Speaker 2: make it back, so like they're trying to control the
- 12:09Speaker 2: game and do all the little things that makes an
- 12:11Speaker 2: umpire great, you know in their bosses eyes. But you know,
- 12:14Speaker 2: it's definitely one. I think it's the you know, it's
- 12:20Speaker 2: the human element, the body language, the looks, like the
- 12:23Speaker 2: visual frustration from player, you know, oh, you know, a
- 12:27Speaker 2: real dejected like challenge, like you know, no one's gonna
- 12:30Speaker 2: like that, you know. So I think down the road,
- 12:32Speaker 2: like do we see somebody get into it because of it? Maybe,
- 12:35Speaker 2: But you know, it's at the end of the day,
- 12:37Speaker 2: like Dan was saying, the younger guys are so good
- 12:41Speaker 2: at it, you know, because they don't know anything else.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I you know, was one of the last guys that
- 12:47Speaker 2: come up in the old guard of you threw that
- 12:50Speaker 2: pitch perfectly on the corner. That's not a strike yet
- 12:53Speaker 2: for you, and that was okay. So like unfortunately, like
- 12:57Speaker 2: you know, you face. I remember facing the Tigers, you
- 13:00Speaker 2: know they had when they had I called it murders
- 13:02Speaker 2: rough at the time, but it was like Kinsler, you know,
- 13:05Speaker 2: the crew, and it was like, okay, I threw that
- 13:09Speaker 2: pitch where I wanted to. Now I got to do
- 13:11Speaker 2: it again, and then as a game would progress, it
- 13:13Speaker 2: would open up, you know, and then you'd get a
- 13:14Speaker 2: little further off the plate, you know, And that was
- 13:16Speaker 2: the I think that's the give and take that it's
- 13:19Speaker 2: hard to explain to, especially a newer fan of the
- 13:22Speaker 2: game that's seen this already. There was an earned privilege.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I think Buehler kind of talked about this at one
- 13:30Speaker 2: point and kind of got a lot of grief for it.
- 13:32Speaker 2: But there was a like, Hey, I'm going to hit
- 13:35Speaker 2: that corner all day whoever's back there, and I'm going
- 13:38Speaker 2: to keep drilling it. And as a game went, you
- 13:39Speaker 2: got a little bit more and a little bit more,
- 13:41Speaker 2: But it was just it was a known thing that
- 13:43Speaker 2: was just part of it. And you know, for me,
- 13:46Speaker 2: I wish that was still a thing because it helped,
- 13:49Speaker 2: you know, and now we're key holding our pictures into
- 13:52Speaker 2: this little spot and you know, it's going to create
- 13:54Speaker 2: offense things like that, you know, but it's also going
- 13:57Speaker 2: to be the game up being able to get the
- 13:58Speaker 2: calls right. And so I don't know, it's the umpires
- 14:01Speaker 2: at the end of the day. They're they're back there
- 14:02Speaker 2: doing their best, you know, and unfortunately we have the
- 14:06Speaker 2: best cameras in the world and zoom and slow mo,
- 14:09Speaker 2: and so it's like, oh, look, how bad this guy was.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Just like it was one hundred and two, it ran
- 14:13Speaker 2: fifteen inches and right he missed it by you know,
- 14:16Speaker 2: a quarter of an inch, and it's like, okay, give
- 14:18Speaker 2: this guy break.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that is tough on the pictures side. The one
- 14:23Speaker 3: thing I thought was cool was justin TOPA got that
- 14:26Speaker 3: Saturday strikeout where it was a two to two pitch
- 14:29Speaker 3: and Jeffers called it and Jefferson we asked him about
- 14:31Speaker 3: it yesterday and it was a pretty funny answer. He said,
- 14:35Speaker 3: that was Chris Siegel. I think was the plate ump
- 14:38Speaker 3: det No, that was and or Nora said to him, Hey,
- 14:41Speaker 3: do you think you think that was a strike and
- 14:44Speaker 3: it pops up so fast that it's on the screen.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Jefferson's yeah, I think it was, and he runs off
- 14:49Speaker 3: the field. Yeah, it caught the tiniest bit at the
- 14:54Speaker 3: top of the zone. But I think guys are, especially catchers,
- 14:57Speaker 3: are aware that off speed up, there's gonna be that
- 15:02Speaker 3: part where it doesn't you know, the tip of the
- 15:04Speaker 3: ball comes down and and just catches that zone because
- 15:08Speaker 3: the ball is up and so the ump sees it
- 15:10Speaker 3: up and thinks it's up, but where it lands isn't
- 15:13Speaker 3: always you know, clear. I think we'll see that play
- 15:16Speaker 3: out a lot over the course of the year.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and guys will get better at seeing it. You know,
- 15:21Speaker 2: it's gonna be with everything it's it'll be a trend
- 15:23Speaker 2: and then guys will start trying to dump it and
- 15:25Speaker 2: then they'll give up, right.
- 15:26Speaker 3: And then hitters are going to react to whatever looking
- 15:28Speaker 3: for it up there, and it'll just cause this whole
- 15:30Speaker 3: new cycle. So yeah, Tyler, just what did you see? What?
- 15:36Speaker 1: What?
- 15:36Speaker 3: What? What did you take away from this weekend? What'd
- 15:39Speaker 3: you like what you saw from the Twins?
- 15:42Speaker 2: For me, the ones that stood out on the good
- 15:45Speaker 2: side especially is like watching Byron stretch that triple the left.
- 15:48Speaker 2: You know, that's vintage Byron Buckston. You know he came
- 15:52Speaker 2: out ready to play. You go play for TMSA, I know,
- 15:55Speaker 2: stuff like that's weird. It Like, you know, it's great
- 15:57Speaker 2: at playing games, but it's not spring training, Like you're
- 16:00Speaker 2: not getting you know, as good as you can. You're
- 16:03Speaker 2: probably getting your reps in and taking VP and all
- 16:05Speaker 2: that good stuff, but like game speed is still different,
- 16:08Speaker 2: you know, and to see him go out and do
- 16:10Speaker 2: his thing. It's you know, did that You know he
- 16:13Speaker 2: made the play deep in the right center gap, you know,
- 16:18Speaker 2: casually kind of catching ball that nobody else is going
- 16:20Speaker 2: to get to. So that was really good. You know,
- 16:23Speaker 2: like you said, the bullpen showed up Saturday. You know,
- 16:26Speaker 2: they're figuring out their roles. You know, there's you know,
- 16:29Speaker 2: Shelty's said, you know, we don't really know x y
- 16:32Speaker 2: Z yet, but that stuff always team seems to pan
- 16:35Speaker 2: itself out. You know, guys are going to be who
- 16:37Speaker 2: they are. You know, weirdly have a lot of lefties
- 16:40Speaker 2: out there, so that could create some interesting like mixes
- 16:43Speaker 2: for them, like whoever matches up well, all that good stuff.
- 16:46Speaker 2: But yeah, all and I mean you win one or
- 16:49Speaker 2: your first three, you know, that's all you can really
- 16:51Speaker 2: ask for. You know, going out and sweeping somebody doesn't
- 16:53Speaker 2: happen very often. But you know, go to a team
- 16:56Speaker 2: that's probably going to be decent by the end of
- 16:59Speaker 2: the year. You know, they got some pretty good ball
- 17:01Speaker 2: club over there, and you know Royce had a good weekend.
- 17:05Speaker 2: You know, guys are starting to contribute to get their
- 17:06Speaker 2: feet under him, and you know it's all you can
- 17:08Speaker 2: ask for a week one. You know, everybody's healthy. Yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 2: I think that's a big thing. You leave a series
- 17:13Speaker 2: the first season, first series of the season, you know,
- 17:15Speaker 2: and everything's good to go. Yeah, we had a go ahead.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I was gonna say, buck one thing that was cool
- 17:23Speaker 3: to happen this weekend was him pumping up Royce. Buck
- 17:26Speaker 3: showed some real leadership and it's something you can tell
- 17:31Speaker 3: he's kind of growing into, which was cool because buck
- 17:33Speaker 3: has always been that energy. You know, you you can attest.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Buck is the guy whose energy you go off of
- 17:39Speaker 3: and and when he is playing and you're like fired up.
- 17:42Speaker 3: But you can tell the importance being placed on Royce
- 17:46Speaker 3: lewis because Shelton's made a point of it. Shelton went
- 17:49Speaker 3: to Texas right after he got hired and went to
- 17:52Speaker 3: get some food with Royce and wanted to see where
- 17:54Speaker 3: he was and said that unlocking Royce is key. Well,
- 17:59Speaker 3: it's clear that that message has been passed to Buckston
- 18:02Speaker 3: because Buckson saw Royce pop out in the first at
- 18:05Speaker 3: bat of Saturday's game and he said he could tell
- 18:08Speaker 3: he got down and he knows his teammate, and so
- 18:12Speaker 3: he went over to him. He said, look, you're overthinking things.
- 18:15Speaker 3: You're the best player ever. He's just totally feeding into
- 18:18Speaker 3: Royce's ego. Pump him up right. He's like, if you
- 18:23Speaker 3: if you're thinking too much in this game, it's it's
- 18:26Speaker 3: you're you're doing yourself a disservice. And he said, just
- 18:29Speaker 3: get on top of the ball. Let's see what happens
- 18:31Speaker 3: next time. Up. Royce hits the two run homer and
- 18:34Speaker 3: he came back over and told Buck, I know I'm
- 18:36Speaker 3: the best player and then like, you know, and and
- 18:40Speaker 3: it was just a cool moment. Bucks at may his day,
- 18:43Speaker 3: I thought that was a really good moment for this
- 18:46Speaker 3: team because again Royce Lewis unlocking him is so key
- 18:50Speaker 3: this team. He will not be batting an eighth all
- 18:53Speaker 3: season like they're batting the mate right now. To give
- 18:55Speaker 3: him some you know, one, he's working on new swing,
- 18:59Speaker 3: and they want him to play his way into They
- 19:02Speaker 3: want him to deserve being in the fourth spot or
- 19:05Speaker 3: or fifth wherever they got about it. They want him
- 19:07Speaker 3: to earn it essentially. You know, we're talking a guy
- 19:11Speaker 3: that from August of twenty twenty four to the end
- 19:15Speaker 3: of last season really has had it rough at the plate,
- 19:18Speaker 3: has not been consistent, and so it's it's hey, let's
- 19:23Speaker 3: we know you're capable of this, we want to see this,
- 19:26Speaker 3: but show us this. And I think this was great
- 19:28Speaker 3: for him to have two home runs the game time
- 19:31Speaker 3: one yesterday was was huge in the moment. He did
- 19:33Speaker 3: strike out twice with the bases load yesterday. I'm sure
- 19:36Speaker 3: he didn't like that, but he he's got even out
- 19:39Speaker 3: those career numbers with the bases load. He's got like
- 19:42Speaker 3: a sixteen hundreds and.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Everything.
- 19:46Speaker 3: It's so fair. It's so fair of us to be like,
- 19:49Speaker 3: you're going to hit a grand Slam. Do the grand
- 19:51Speaker 3: Slam thing?
- 19:52Speaker 2: Yeah, do the thing please?
- 19:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:54Speaker 2: And like that point, like you know, he had so much.
- 19:57Speaker 2: You know, he got hurt and got hurt, and it
- 19:59Speaker 2: was just like he's finally like, look, you're playing third base.
- 20:02Speaker 2: You're gonna play. We're not moving to center field randomly.
- 20:05Speaker 2: We're not playing left or right like you're playing one spot.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I think that's when guys can finally like settle in,
- 20:10Speaker 2: you know, the the whole team. I've said it forever,
- 20:14Speaker 2: but everybody wants the super utility player, but not everyone
- 20:17Speaker 2: is that, you know. The Marwin Gonzalez comes to mind,
- 20:21Speaker 2: as one who did it better than most. You know,
- 20:24Speaker 2: Jose Ramirez technically was for a while. Like it's not
- 20:28Speaker 2: easy to do. And so like having a guy that
- 20:31Speaker 2: shows up every day knowing exactly where in the field
- 20:32Speaker 2: he's going to be, like that takes those thoughts out
- 20:35Speaker 2: of his head that wouldn't be there normally, and so
- 20:37Speaker 2: it's like, you know, it's it's he can finally settle
- 20:40Speaker 2: in and like, you know, play one one sixty two.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I won't say one sixty but you know, play one
- 20:44Speaker 2: hundred and fifty games, and like, you know, just go
- 20:46Speaker 2: ball out and be the guy that you were, you
- 20:49Speaker 2: know in the backyard growing up.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Uh.
- 20:53Speaker 1: We talked about the starting pitching a little bit already
- 20:56Speaker 1: and Dan, obviously we talked about Joe Ryan's great start
- 20:58Speaker 1: on Friday Show, but since then Todge Bradley saw it
- 21:02Speaker 1: start as well. And then on Sunday the Bailey over
- 21:05Speaker 1: Mikeable piggyback situation that didn't go quite as well, Dan, Dan,
- 21:10Speaker 1: what happened there and what's the plan there for the Twins?
- 21:13Speaker 3: Okay, real quick, TODJ. Bradley loved one thing I saw there.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Tod Bradley's the guy who's always had one bad inning.
- 21:22Speaker 3: He's got this elite stuff. He's got a killer set
- 21:24Speaker 3: of tools, and yeah, electric it is he's got. He's
- 21:29Speaker 3: just really good and he always has the one bad inning.
- 21:32Speaker 3: But he's talked about being a little less stubborn now.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Teammates definitely are counseling and working with him, just trying
- 21:39Speaker 3: to get him to kind of come of age. That
- 21:42Speaker 3: first inning absolutely had disaster written all over. It gets
- 21:45Speaker 3: the first two outs, then loads the bases with two walks,
- 21:49Speaker 3: and you know, labors through it, but came back and
- 21:53Speaker 3: struck out Dylan Beaver's on a ninety eight to get
- 21:56Speaker 3: out of the inning, and it was thirty three pitches
- 21:58Speaker 3: and it was like, oh wow, that's a lot, especially
- 22:00Speaker 3: in your first start. You know, everybody's got the leash
- 22:03Speaker 3: in that first start because the build up process is
- 22:06Speaker 3: still ongoing. But to rebound from that and get nine
- 22:09Speaker 3: to the next ten guys end up with nine strikeouts,
- 22:12Speaker 3: that gave them such a huge lift. They were very
- 22:14Speaker 3: fired up about that. But yeah, the thing we really
- 22:18Speaker 3: want to get into is yesterday, And because I know
- 22:22Speaker 3: Tyler's done this before and when he was starting the
- 22:25Speaker 3: piggyback and look day off on Friday, day off on Tuesday.
- 22:33Speaker 3: So the built in weather day, the famous Midwest East
- 22:37Speaker 3: Coast built in weather day for opening Day. By the way,
- 22:39Speaker 3: we don't have one of those with the twins on
- 22:41Speaker 3: Friday Saturday, and it sounds like there might be a
- 22:43Speaker 3: fifteen inch snowstorm coming in on Saturday.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Which I didn't even look the weather there.
- 22:50Speaker 3: We don't have one in the place you needed the most.
- 22:53Speaker 3: But with those days built in, it really screws up
- 22:57Speaker 3: everybody's schedule and stand on the five to six day
- 22:59Speaker 3: rotation because if you throw in rotation if you want to,
- 23:03Speaker 3: you don't want to burn a guy and have them
- 23:04Speaker 3: just come to the ballpark on Friday and throw and
- 23:07Speaker 3: then skip his turn. So how did they do it?
- 23:10Speaker 3: And they looked at it two and a half weeks ago.
- 23:12Speaker 3: They devised this plan where Joe Taj and Simon Woods
- 23:16Speaker 3: Richardson could start on their five six days, but they
- 23:20Speaker 3: had to figure out a way around Mick Abele and
- 23:23Speaker 3: Bailey Ober and they opted to do the piggyback and
- 23:27Speaker 3: they had brad Or they had able come out of
- 23:30Speaker 3: the bullpen last Tuesday in Fort Myers in the fifth inning. Yeah,
- 23:38Speaker 3: they tried to get him as used to it as possible.
- 23:42Speaker 3: He came in, you know, one, you know, pictures are
- 23:47Speaker 3: so routine oriented. They definitely one oh five. You know
- 23:51Speaker 3: how to get ready for one o five? I don't
- 23:53Speaker 3: know how you get ready for the fifth inning, right
- 23:57Speaker 3: because like on we had a game where it was
- 24:00Speaker 3: one fifty five in spring training last week, and then
- 24:03Speaker 3: we had a game that was three oh one. When's
- 24:05Speaker 3: the fifth Like is it two forty three? Is it
- 24:09Speaker 3: one fifty seven?
- 24:11Speaker 2: And a perfect game?
- 24:13Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, And and Bailey Bailey came out and the plan,
- 24:17Speaker 3: no matter what was Bailey would have the possibilities of
- 24:20Speaker 3: innings one through four, and if Bailey didn't make it
- 24:24Speaker 3: that long, they would have been brought in other relievers.
- 24:26Speaker 3: But Mick was going out for the fifth inning. You know,
- 24:29Speaker 3: he got his first five guys out. There was a
- 24:32Speaker 3: little bit of it like he was still he got
- 24:34Speaker 3: through those five, but he went in some deep counts early,
- 24:37Speaker 3: and then the deep counts started happening more frequently, and
- 24:41Speaker 3: he you know, definitely started He got the first five
- 24:45Speaker 3: guys out, He got two on Tyler O'Neill and O'Neill
- 24:49Speaker 3: I think walked or maybe Yeah, O'Neill walked, uh, and
- 24:52Speaker 3: then he gave up two straight doubles on one two
- 24:56Speaker 3: pitches and the second one was beavers and and it
- 25:00Speaker 3: if the orioles of five to four lead. He came
- 25:02Speaker 3: back the next thing. Five straight guys reach base. It
- 25:05Speaker 3: definitely looked like he was a young guy in a
- 25:08Speaker 3: challenging spot because he had an electric spring training and
- 25:13Speaker 3: command was not really an issue. And I just wonder, Uh, Tyler,
- 25:17Speaker 3: what is that like to try and.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Adjust the routine. He You know, it's a like you said,
- 25:26Speaker 2: if it goes to plan, it's still not normal, like
- 25:30Speaker 2: you know, those guys depending on the routines. Now, guys
- 25:33Speaker 2: are getting ready for two hours before a game, like
- 25:36Speaker 2: whether it's you know, the massage, the tubs that workout,
- 25:40Speaker 2: the whatever it may be breathing, you know, all the things,
- 25:44Speaker 2: and you know, all of a sudden, you know, I'm
- 25:46Speaker 2: sure he stayed back in the clubhouse like did his routine,
- 25:50Speaker 2: but once you got to the bullpen, it's already a
- 25:52Speaker 2: different animal. Like Baltimore, Like I don't know how crazy
- 25:55Speaker 2: the fans were were not, but like there's fans, you know,
- 25:58Speaker 2: right over your shoulder breathing on you. There's the ladies
- 26:02Speaker 2: stretching and center field that makes fun of every you know,
- 26:05Speaker 2: it's actually it's like the running joke. There's a lady
- 26:06Speaker 2: out there who stretches with she picks a guy and
- 26:09Speaker 2: she does your whole routine with you, and so you know,
- 26:12Speaker 2: it's just a different world in the bullpen. And then
- 26:15Speaker 2: throwing the wrinkle of Okay, here's a long inning, here's
- 26:17Speaker 2: a quick inning. All right, you have the next inning.
- 26:20Speaker 2: You know, did he get all his throws in whatever?
- 26:22Speaker 2: I'm sure he was ready to pitch. But mentally it's
- 26:26Speaker 2: it's everything's just sped up. You're moving a little quicker,
- 26:29Speaker 2: whether you want to or not. And then you come
- 26:31Speaker 2: into a game where it's you know, it's a tight game,
- 26:34Speaker 2: you know, where it's like you got to be on
- 26:35Speaker 2: and it's like as a starter, like I remember Vivili,
- 26:38Speaker 2: like first pitches of outings, like you know, day game
- 26:40Speaker 2: at target field and you're like taking that breath, You're like,
- 26:43Speaker 2: all right, just throw a strike here, you know, get
- 26:45Speaker 2: the first one out of the lay and like you
- 26:47Speaker 2: don't have that coming out of the bullpen, like it's
- 26:49Speaker 2: every pitch is life or death, you know, essentially, and
- 26:53Speaker 2: so it's it's stressful. And to that point, he never
- 26:58Speaker 2: to me he didn't look comfortable like he he was
- 27:00Speaker 2: just like he was just going and he was hot
- 27:02Speaker 2: and ready and stuff was good. You know, he throws
- 27:05Speaker 2: ninety six ninety seven, so like it's gonna look fine.
- 27:08Speaker 2: But I would I guarantee, you know, off the without
- 27:11Speaker 2: a microphone in his face, he probably tell you that, yeah,
- 27:13Speaker 2: I didn't feel sharp or whatever it was in the
- 27:15Speaker 2: moment and facing the lineup like that with some big
- 27:19Speaker 2: bats and things like that, like you miss a couple
- 27:21Speaker 2: of times, like you're gonna get hurt, and you know,
- 27:23Speaker 2: that's kind of how it went, and you know, luckily
- 27:26Speaker 2: they came back and battled. But it was just, you know,
- 27:28Speaker 2: it was one of those things where in the moment
- 27:30Speaker 2: the piggyback, it always sounds great, and you know sometimes
- 27:34Speaker 2: like yeah, we can cover this whole game, and then
- 27:36Speaker 2: next thing, you know, the guy goes one inning, and
- 27:38Speaker 2: then the next guy goes two, and then the bullpen
- 27:40Speaker 2: covers six, you know, and it's just I've seen that
- 27:42Speaker 2: more times than I've seen it go well. But you know,
- 27:45Speaker 2: it's you got to get guys work, and I understand
- 27:48Speaker 2: all that. But you know, sometimes it's just maybe find
- 27:51Speaker 2: a better way, you know, just throw live on the field,
- 27:53Speaker 2: you know, guys who aren't playing that day, just go
- 27:55Speaker 2: stand in the box, you know something.
- 27:57Speaker 3: But it's funny.
- 27:59Speaker 2: It's a tough spot.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Yeah. The crazy part is is if this snowstorm does
- 28:03Speaker 3: hit us, and I don't know, you never know Midwest weather,
- 28:07Speaker 3: but if there's a snowstorm that hits Saturday, that's when
- 28:11Speaker 3: I believe these guys are ready to go again Friday, Saturday,
- 28:14Speaker 3: able and uh and Ober. And if the snowstorm comes
- 28:19Speaker 3: in and just wrecks this plan because it it does
- 28:21Speaker 3: like from a strategic thought, keeping your guys on five
- 28:26Speaker 3: six days especially, they didn't want Joe Ryan to be
- 28:29Speaker 3: on a seven eight day plan. They didn't want Taj
- 28:31Speaker 3: Bradley on a seven eight day plan. Keeping everybody as
- 28:34Speaker 3: close to five six days as possible early on, that's
- 28:37Speaker 3: that's really that is that can be advantageous because then
- 28:42Speaker 3: the next time out they build up and they're they're
- 28:44Speaker 3: just the body that routine is critical.
- 28:47Speaker 2: And and yeah, so you got to survive what the
- 28:50Speaker 2: first two weeks is, right, like they kind of after
- 28:53Speaker 2: the first week or so, it's over with. But yeah,
- 28:55Speaker 2: it's it's every year. Like I remember, like I think
- 28:58Speaker 2: it's like Mike Baneda and Kent and like we had
- 29:00Speaker 2: like some veterans who weren't going to come out of
- 29:03Speaker 2: the bullpen and it's like what do we do?
- 29:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it was Canada and who's the lefty man?
- 29:10Speaker 2: It was uh oh from Texas.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Uh yeah, but they they piggybacked and came in and
- 29:19Speaker 3: uh man, it was like it's just odd.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Like yeah, and you know they don't like feel fine,
- 29:26Speaker 2: but you don't. You're not you're not settled in, like you're.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Just not just And for Mick, he's such a young guy,
- 29:32Speaker 3: like he's still trying to find his food.
- 29:35Speaker 2: It's like, here's a curve ball ye opening day for
- 29:39Speaker 2: you this year, you know because what he debuted last season.
- 29:42Speaker 3: Correct, yeah he did and he got like but he
- 29:47Speaker 3: also pitched at the bullpen one time and it was
- 29:49Speaker 3: a disaster for them last year.
- 29:52Speaker 2: You know.
- 29:52Speaker 3: It's definitely and Derek Shelton said, we knew it was
- 29:56Speaker 3: gonna be challenging, Like this wasn't something we did like
- 29:59Speaker 3: they we're going to go into this thinking all right,
- 30:02Speaker 3: we're doing this plan. I think that you know, team
- 30:05Speaker 3: manages this game totally different if they don't have this
- 30:09Speaker 3: schedule because you go that bullpen early. And even though
- 30:12Speaker 3: they had the long day on Saturday as a group,
- 30:14Speaker 3: they had and they have a game today, they have
- 30:16Speaker 3: a day off on Tuesday, so you can get out
- 30:18Speaker 3: there and manage it different. But you know, with the
- 30:21Speaker 3: plan in place, they had to kind of go with it.
- 30:22Speaker 3: And it was like every time Abel came kept coming
- 30:25Speaker 3: back out, Like the eighth innner, I remember thinking I
- 30:28Speaker 3: was back again, and I.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Did look up and I was like, I was just
- 30:31Speaker 2: expecting it to be a reliever at that point, because.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Yeah, there was a long SEVN. Yeah that was the
- 30:36Speaker 3: wal they're challenging and where where they loaded the bases
- 30:39Speaker 3: they got, you know, they got to run to make
- 30:41Speaker 3: it eight six, and it was a long delay for Able,
- 30:45Speaker 3: which is good to give him those variables to work
- 30:48Speaker 3: with and see how he responds. But he came back
- 30:51Speaker 3: and two first two guys got on and they went
- 30:53Speaker 3: to Anthony Bonda.
- 30:54Speaker 2: So yeah, I like, like I mentioned, sew Banda works out.
- 31:00Speaker 2: He's I played with him, I think two different teams,
- 31:04Speaker 2: and he's got some some So I mean he's electric
- 31:07Speaker 2: at times like he was up to ninety seven when
- 31:09Speaker 2: I was with them Meal. It's just like all the
- 31:12Speaker 2: things and like we got, like I said, we got
- 31:14Speaker 2: a bunch of bunch of arms out there with some possibility,
- 31:16Speaker 2: so you never know.
- 31:20Speaker 1: We are. Where are you doing Kansas City?
- 31:22Speaker 3: And is it an Abean?
- 31:23Speaker 2: No?
- 31:24Speaker 3: No, this would be home. I'm I'm at the home base.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Nobody went to Nobody went to Kansas City the whole beat.
- 31:30Speaker 3: There's a few people, there's a few backup riders there,
- 31:33Speaker 3: but there's nobody on the beat because the home opener.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Plus I'll just give my quick spiel, there's two days
- 31:40Speaker 3: off on this road trip. I don't think using nine
- 31:43Speaker 3: hotel nights to cover six games is very efficient. So
- 31:47Speaker 3: I skipped Kansas City because tomorrow they're off and I
- 31:50Speaker 3: really didn't want to, Like it's the start of the year.
- 31:52Speaker 3: This meant like four days at home before I go
- 31:55Speaker 3: to Minnesota for the the home road trip for me,
- 32:00Speaker 3: So yeah, I skipped.
- 32:02Speaker 2: You'll get.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Yes, Well, the Twins are there today Monday afternoon, game
- 32:10Speaker 1: day off, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday finish up before that
- 32:13Speaker 1: home opener, and apparently a fifteen inch snowstorm, so maybe
- 32:16Speaker 1: I should just stay in Home Springs.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Yes, yes, what where's Derek Shelton give be though? After
- 32:23Speaker 3: the ejection yesterday? Is he gonna be there today? And
- 32:26Speaker 3: we should cover this real quick, that Derek Shelton injection
- 32:29Speaker 3: the first history. He was pissed off the Josh Bell
- 32:41Speaker 3: getting called out running out of the baseline. Early on
- 32:45Speaker 3: you could tell he was pissed. Bell was diplomatic about
- 32:47Speaker 3: it because he likes the umpire and make the call.
- 32:50Speaker 3: He said, uh, But Shelton didn't think that Bell moved
- 32:54Speaker 3: three feet out of the way to run, and he
- 32:59Speaker 3: like he may be in a step or two inside
- 33:01Speaker 3: the line, but it wasn't like the third basement. The
- 33:03Speaker 3: ground ball took him into Bell. But the interesting part was,
- 33:08Speaker 3: and I didn't see this, but Shelton mentioned it after
- 33:10Speaker 3: the game, was he tagged him with the glove, but
- 33:12Speaker 3: the ball was in his hand in the third baseman's hand.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Twice.
- 33:17Speaker 3: But because the play, because it's one of those weird
- 33:20Speaker 3: plays where the ball is in front of umpires, it
- 33:24Speaker 3: can't be challenged, so there's no way to challenge it.
- 33:28Speaker 3: So they have to just go if the vampire's calling,
- 33:30Speaker 3: so Shelton was pissed about that in the first place.
- 33:33Speaker 3: But then the ninth inning, Ryan Helsley threw. It was
- 33:38Speaker 3: the three to two pitch to Bell who thought he'd
- 33:41Speaker 3: walked on three to one, and there was a challenge
- 33:44Speaker 3: by their catcher and got overturned, so it was three
- 33:46Speaker 3: to two and Hellsley called for the challenge too. And
- 33:51Speaker 3: I looked at the replay this morning, and Shelton said
- 33:54Speaker 3: afterwards it didn't feel like it was. It felt like
- 33:57Speaker 3: it was more than three seconds. You have three seconds.
- 33:59Speaker 3: I watched it. It probably happened about a second and
- 34:02Speaker 3: a half two seconds in, but it was weird because
- 34:06Speaker 3: Hellsley first goes to adjust the cap, which he does
- 34:10Speaker 3: after he throws, and then he tapped it. But like
- 34:13Speaker 3: Bell said, I was halfway in the first place. Yeah,
- 34:16Speaker 3: And Shelton was pissed and didn't think he got the
- 34:20Speaker 3: ejection or didn't think he got the challenging and time.
- 34:24Speaker 3: I mean, it was definitely it seemed it wasn't the
- 34:29Speaker 3: smoothest challenge I guess.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Right, well, and that's what I don't know. I mean,
- 34:34Speaker 2: I feel like across the league or the league will
- 34:38Speaker 2: have to figure out something because like there's even one.
- 34:41Speaker 2: I think it was a guy still second, Jeffers was
- 34:44Speaker 2: catching and like it was a strike, like at least
- 34:49Speaker 2: to the eye. Throws down and then Jeffers is like
- 34:53Speaker 2: looking like wait, what did you call that? And so
- 34:55Speaker 2: like in those moments, it's like, all right, so how
- 34:57Speaker 2: do we figure this out? Because there's only one guy
- 34:59Speaker 2: that I can call that one, like the picture can't
- 35:01Speaker 2: because like there's so much going on. The hitter to
- 35:05Speaker 2: that point probably isn't gonna challenge either, but the catcher
- 35:08Speaker 2: has to have some time. Like that'll be an interesting
- 35:11Speaker 2: one for me to see, like how they figure that
- 35:13Speaker 2: one out, Like they have like a flag they can
- 35:15Speaker 2: whip out of their pocket, like throw and throw it
- 35:18Speaker 2: kind of thing, because like otherwise, like we're just gonna
- 35:21Speaker 2: get burned now if guys are stealing, you know, and
- 35:23Speaker 2: like it's just a if we're gonna do it, we
- 35:25Speaker 2: need to make sure we can do it on every pitch,
- 35:27Speaker 2: you know. I think that's gonna become the issue.
- 35:30Speaker 3: Yeah, that that is, That's a play that happens frequently.
- 35:33Speaker 3: We're gearing up. Yeah, the catcher gears up for that
- 35:37Speaker 3: storm base.
- 35:37Speaker 2: They turn you know, blocking view and whatever and it's
- 35:40Speaker 2: like now that you know, I can maybe see it,
- 35:43Speaker 2: So maybe that's where like, hey, on this play you
- 35:46Speaker 2: can call, but it's still probably be wrong from the
- 35:49Speaker 2: picture's point of view.
- 35:50Speaker 3: And and man, I mean we're talking some balls are
- 35:52Speaker 3: right down the middle to get missed.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Yeah, like historically speaking, it's like good pitches, like quality strikes,
- 35:59Speaker 2: and then it's just and yeah, you know that's if
- 36:02Speaker 2: we're trying to fix it, like those are really the
- 36:03Speaker 2: ones that should be available to fix as well.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Yeah, there will be some things. Remember when when we
- 36:09Speaker 3: changed the definition of a catch for a little bit
- 36:11Speaker 3: in like twenty fourteen, and it was like the transfer rule,
- 36:16Speaker 3: and it was, Yeah, there was some craziness for the
- 36:18Speaker 3: first week or two, and then there was there was
- 36:21Speaker 3: craziness involved when blocking the plate with the catcher when
- 36:25Speaker 3: that will change. And I still remember Rob Ventura getting
- 36:30Speaker 3: ejected for the White Sox and kicking dirt on home
- 36:33Speaker 3: plate and it was so it was twenty fourteen and
- 36:36Speaker 3: we had this going on. It was amazing. So Shelton
- 36:38Speaker 3: got his money's worth, got ejected.
- 36:42Speaker 2: And crazy getting in trouble.
- 36:46Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, So that I thought that just encapsulated
- 36:51Speaker 3: this perfectly wild weekend because look, hey, the one thing
- 36:55Speaker 3: to take away from all this is the Twins are
- 36:57Speaker 3: a lot more entertaining. I'm imagining fans found them a
- 37:00Speaker 3: lot more entertaining. Again, and when your team payrolls one
- 37:03Speaker 3: oh five ten millions going to Carlos Korea in Houston
- 37:06Speaker 3: twenty one millions being Pablo Lopez on the IL, expectations
- 37:10Speaker 3: are pretty low with the seventy five million dollar group,
- 37:13Speaker 3: but it's at least interesting.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Like seventeen, that's all I gotta say. Twenty seventeen, right, yeah,
- 37:21Speaker 2: we lost one hundred and three and sixteen, right, one
- 37:23Speaker 2: hundred and three games or something like that.
- 37:25Speaker 3: I was still covering the White Sox. I remember being
- 37:27Speaker 3: shocked to you guys in twenty seventeen.
- 37:29Speaker 2: It was a bunch of young guys don't know any better.
- 37:32Speaker 2: You know, things can happen.
- 37:34Speaker 3: It was, you know what, it was the loss of
- 37:36Speaker 3: Hime Garcia that fired you guys up. He was really
- 37:39Speaker 3: trusted teammate for those three four days that you had him,
- 37:42Speaker 3: and you guys.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Are, Yeah, what a weird trade deadline that one was?
- 37:47Speaker 3: Yeah, Kinsler gets traded, your all star gets traded.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, then we rallied the troops.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Well, we could talk for hours here, but I think
- 37:58Speaker 1: we will. We'll call this one an episode, and uh,
- 38:02Speaker 1: we'll get back to baseball today this afternoon. Twins at
- 38:06Speaker 1: Royals home opener Friday. I think I already mentioned all that.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Thank you very much Tyler for coming on today.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Thank you to Dan.
- 38:13Speaker 1: If you liked what you heard today, please hit the
- 38:16Speaker 1: subscribe button. I didn't forget today. Dan for the shout out,
- 38:19Speaker 1: and we look forward to seeing you next time.
- 38:21Speaker 2: On Twin City's territory. Thanks very much,
