- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Tristan, how you doing today, man?
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: I am much drier than I was last week.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: Uh, it seems the weather have subsided.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: For now.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: For now.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: For now.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Maybe here in Central Texas.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: I don't know about everybody else, but yeah, that's how it's going for me, man.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: But I tell you what, I am beyond hyped right now.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: My guns are to the sky, no matter the weather, given the certain recent news.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Baseball is a fun sport in every way, shape, and form.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, obviously, the biggest of news.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, Tim Tadlock is better than Chris Beard.
- 1:24SPEAKER_03: This was this would not be an unpopular opinion before the certain events, but boy, did that just cement the tadlock is greater than Beard.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, yeah.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: Uh obviously that was the case from when Beard left.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: We all turned to Tim Tadlock, and we're just like, please, you're our last hope.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: Don't don't leave us.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: We needed this so bad as a fan base, and I think Kirby Hoka recognized this as soon as the Aggies fired their uh their longtime coach, Childress.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Um, there was there's talks of them gunning hard for Tim Tadlock, as confirmed by Don Williams at the AJ and President Skuvenek.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Apparently, AM was going intense.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: Like in obviously, he was their number one.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: So I'm so glad that Kirby nipped it in the bud and said, No way, he's ours.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: He's a red raider to his core.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: And that couldn't be more true.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: The guy bleed scarlet and black since the day he threw on the glove himself to be a player.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: Tim Tadlock, lifetime contract.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure the all the details of it yet.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: I don't think they've come out yet, but uh just a guy no more deserving than Tim Tadlock for something like this.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: He's gonna be uh confirmed by Kendall Rogers of D1 baseball, he's gonna be uh one of the third or fourth highest paid coaches in all of college baseball uh for years to come, basically just sticking him next to the Red Raider name for pretty much the rest of his career.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: So uh unbelievable news.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: Uh, so happy that we got this done and locked down, and we don't have to worry about any more speculation.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, and he's got to be one of the first Texas Tech coaches to uh publicly turn down both UT and AM.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: Turning down the two biggest programs in the state and that our two fiercest rivals, that is such a flex for Red Raider fans.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: It feels so good because it it puts it puts way down this notion that we're nothing but the little brother in quotation marks.
- 3:24SPEAKER_03: I hate that term, um, or just just there to be picked on.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: And it's not true, especially in the baseball department.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: This baseball team is arguably the best in the state this this past decade, and obviously will only have a bright future because I do believe that Tim Tavlock is a top five uh coach of the nation, and I don't think that's a hot take whatsoever.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: No, he's getting national attention, national love since he got the TTU in 2013.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: He has an overall record of 336 and 168 for a 67 win percentage at Texas Tech.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: He's won three Big 12 titles, multiple trips to Omaha, and he's only 52 years old.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, honestly, for a baseball coach, these guys go into their 80s and 90s sometimes when they want to go, uh, you know, they just love the sport that much and want to be uh grow old with it.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: And he's one of those guys, man.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: I can see Tim Tadlock being here potentially, you know, 20, 30 more years.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Skipper has shouted to the moon clearly that he's he's home and he's not going anywhere.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: And to be honest, if if we're being fair, I would say these amazing plans that were being rolled out for the the baseball facility is a little overdue.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: Out of every program that deserves it on campus, it's 1,000% the baseball program.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: I know basketball has been awesome, but baseball has been quietly, or maybe not so quietly, at the top of the game.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: They have been just wrecking the top of the Big 12, bringing home trophies and going to what is the equivalent to the Elite Eight, a ton.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: So I I I'm so glad that he finally got his wishes to be able to compete, uh, compete even further in the recruiting realm with this brand new, gorgeous facility that looks like it's gonna be thrown up in a few years.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: Um but I can't believe he didn't even bring up the basketball wobble.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: I was thinking of facilities.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Holy cow, have you seen have you seen the videos inside that place?
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: Dude, there is there's no shortage of money that the donors and everybody that is associated with the university are putting in to upgrade our training facilities for our top programs.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: And that really, uh I mean, we're not afraid to spend money.
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, whether you're whether you're even just looking at this new contract, the how much money we were spending on Chris Beard, how much money we're spending on Tim Tadlock, we uh how much money we're throwing in to these new upgraded, unbelievable facilities.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, Texas Tech spares no expense when it comes to their athletic department.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: And uh, I I think that goes under the radar for a lot of a lot of people outside of maybe the Big 12 or outside of Texas Tech.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: They really don't think of us as big money spenders, but we are, and we're out here paying and uh, you know, not saying that only money matters when it comes to this stuff, but it's a big part of it, and uh having the resources and everything only helps you going forward.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, money's a huge part of locking down coaches like Tim Tadlock.
- 6:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, he's he's a Red Raider alum, and I bet money doesn't mean that much to him, but whenever someone's trying to write you a blank check, any human being is gonna have a tough time ignoring it.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna be looking at a contract for this man that's probably gonna launch him into the top five coaches paid in the nation.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: As AM was allegedly offering him$1.2 million a year to start, and Hokut said immediately he'd match.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: And I would assume they I don't know if they're just gonna go flat out flat out match it or give him a big a little bit of a bump, but it's our our our boosters have really held it down for us, and they uh so maybe maybe sometimes the rich guys don't get the the appreciation they deserve, but um, and but we really do appreciate those red raiders that are really backing this book, uh this program, not just with their fandom, with their pocketbooks.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: And us as a fan base, we really needed this.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: I know we just talked about it, but after Chris Beard left, we were kind of in a down, you know, we were down in the dumps.
- 7:16SPEAKER_02: And to get this, you know, Mark Adams brought us up a little bit.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: It was an unbelievable press conference, great hire and everything like that.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: But if we were to lose two of our top coaches in the span of a month or two, it would have been really, really bad.
- 7:29SPEAKER_03: And not just lose two of our top coaches ever in those programs, but to our absolute most despised rivals, yeah.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: You know, it just it would just, like I said, exemplify that reputation that AE Long Guards and Aggies think they have over us.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: And I'm so glad we we get to kick that right out.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, so you know, you're you're you're 100% right.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: I as a fandom, we really needed this because I think a lot of us were a little nervous just because we were just a little shell-shocked.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Well, we just went through it, we just went through it with beard, and so you know that's always gonna be in the back of your mind now.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, we never a lot of us never thought beard would leave, and then all of a sudden that went out the window, and now we're like, well, you know, Tim Tadlock, he went to tech, but you know, I guess it could still happen because we were just down from beard.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: So uh it's good to get this locked down, have Tim Tadlock here, man.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: It just feels really good.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: 1000%.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: I I I don't think I I don't think we could be any more excited about the future for Texas Tech baseball.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: And this is to the moon right now.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: I I I like you've said before, I don't think this is an if we're gonna win a national championship with tadlock.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: I think it's a win.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so, and it could potentially happen this year.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: We have a really good team uh coming up.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: In fact, Big 12 Tourney coming up starting tomorrow, Wednesday.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, we're recording here on Tuesday.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: Tomorrow, uh the Big 12 Tourney starts.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: We have Baylor to start off in Bricktown in OKC.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Uh Baylor's missing three of their key players.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: I saw um some injuries for them.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we lost the regular season series to Baylor, dropped that one in Lubbock first time.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: We dropped a series in Lubbock in I don't know how long, but uh, you know, they've beaten us before.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: And I think that may ultimately help us in the long run because, you know, we're not going to go in lightly with this.
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: You know, Tim Tadlock will get his guys together and be like, hey, we've lost to this team before.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: We can lose to this team again.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: We need to bring all that we can to this team, and not only because it's just we're playing Baylor, but we have a national seed on the line to potentially host a super regional for this upcoming college world series.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: And it's about dang time that we we face a team that's that's hurting too.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, injury-wise.
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: Um, but no, I think you're I think you nailed it.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: And I think our boys are going in there with the idea that we want to be in the super regional talk, like solidify it.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: So if we want that to happen, we have to perform in this tournament.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: Otherwise, it's looking like we'll probably just be a regional.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: So there's a lot to fight for this tournament.
- 10:05SPEAKER_03: As you know, usually these conference tournaments they don't mean a ton uh at this point in the season, but at in our position, they can mean the difference between hosting super regional or not.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: So uh I'm I'm sure our boys are going in with that mentality.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: And like you said, it's a bit of a revenge game against Baylor because I'm sure our our boys are way more upset about dropping that game, especially at home, um, to than we are to a team that absolutely had no business beating those boys.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because I mean we're down in terms of seeding.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's between us and like three other teams right now for that last eighth spot to potentially host a super regional.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: So uh, man, if we get it done, we win a couple games in this tournament.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: I think we have it pretty much locked down.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, if we do go on to beat Baylor, we play the winner of TCU Kansas State.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: TCU has been kind of in a uh downward spiral the last few weeks to end the season.
- 10:57SPEAKER_02: Uh they blew, they had all the chance in the world to win the Big 12 championship, and then they blew it to K-State, in fact.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: So they have to go back and play that same exact team in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: So uh hopefully we take care of business and then you know, maybe maybe K-State will just keep it rolling and just upset TCU, and then we have an easier path.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: Come on, TCU.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: You really let UT win the Big 12.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: Really do.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh don't like you very much, but I think I could deal with your 24 fans on the on the Big 12 trophy.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: Now we have UT grabbing another one, grabbing a another baseball trophy here because they got one fairly recently as well.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: So I want that premier spot, dang it.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Come on, frogs.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: I don't want the the horns to have it.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Ugh I hate them.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: I hate them.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: I do as well, sir.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: Uh no, I do not enjoy the uh the Texas Longhorns.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: You know, we never claim to not be biased on this podcast, but you know, I'm sure we don't have a ton of UT fans listening right now, so uh we can we can give as much Longhorn hate as we can, you know.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: We started a Texas Tech podcast.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: This is gonna be from a Texas Tech slant.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: There's always gonna be a bias, and we're always gonna be pretty optimistic too.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: So we're we're probably gonna we're probably a bit of more of the uh living in the clouds fans for the most part, but I mean that's that's the best way to be a fan.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: It is, it it just makes things much sweeter.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: And I mean, we were we were kind of going into this today.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: You saw the odds of uh Texas Tech football.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: I know we're talking about football again.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Uh going into this season.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: I I'm not sure what Twitter account you saw, but um, I think our over-under for wins is about four and a half.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: So yes, covers.com.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, covers.com looking at that Texas Tech with the over-under of four and a half wins.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: And you and me both looked at each other and we were like, uh, that's absolutely doable.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think we're going to do that, and that's us, you know.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: You looked at the last couple years and the results of the season, and you're like, well, you know, that's not so set in stone, guys.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: We just came off two four-win seasons.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: But uh, truly and honestly, I think uh we have a real chance at being uh at at least five wins this season.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: If you're a gambler, I would I would feel comfortable uh comfortable with slamming that over because it's like like you laid out, we have tons of very winnable games.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: At least half of those, uh more than half of those five are completely winnable.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: We have three pretty much freebie wins in Florida International and Um uh Stephen F Austin, Stephen F.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: Austin, thank you, and Kansas.
- 13:33SPEAKER_03: So, and I do think we're gonna win that Houston game.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: So I think we're gonna be three and oh at the start of the season anyway.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: Well, you think about it, that's three what should be auto wins.
- 13:42SPEAKER_02: And I know we lost to Kansas a couple years ago, but Kansas should be probably an auto win.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, you think about FIU and Stephen F.
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: Austin, that's three, and then you have to win just two of Houston, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Baylor, TCU, and Texas.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: Because you got to assume that OU and Iowa State are gonna be losses, those are gonna be two powerhouse teams going into the year.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: But you think about that, you we can get two of those, you know.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: And then, but honestly, that's that's only making the gambler happy.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: I think five wins is a failure of a season, though.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think we should at least be winning six games because or else it's it we're probably gonna have to look at removing Matt Wells at that point.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: So obviously, six wins is is the more ideal situation there.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: But I mean, if we're doing Logie's locks right now, you you do the over.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: We're gonna we're gonna win five games, y'all.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Uh thank you for knocking on the wood there.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, yeah, you know, I we're really optimistic about this football season, and that has bitten us in the butt for probably the last what, I don't know, six years.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: So since we've been in college.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: This is different.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: It's different this time.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: That this this this football team is actually different, though.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's returning a crap ton of experience, not just from our own team, but the transfers coming in are also very experienced.
- 15:01SPEAKER_03: So it's it looks really if this is the year that Matt Wells puts together a decent season to secure his job for a year or two more, it's this one, and that's what has to be the beginning to to get a program back rolling again, is he had to have these seasons where you're like, okay, I mean, yeah, I wish we won more games, but uh at least we're gonna see our team in a bowl.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: And I don't I we may have touched this, touched on this in a past pod, but Tyler Shuck is getting NFL massive, massive love uh for the NFL draft.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, some people are thinking he's gonna be the number one or number two or number three quarterback prospect in this upcoming draft.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, I that it came out of nowhere a little bit for me, but uh you can tell that he's getting love from the national media and just from everybody to perform this season and be a really good player.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was so funny.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: I was reading the uh that PFF college article.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, and uh like about the top 25.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: They had Oregon at 13, if I'm remembering right, and their whole their entire segment was about all right, this all hinges on Tyler Shook.
- 16:09SPEAKER_03: They're like, he's a great quarterback.
- 16:11SPEAKER_03: We just hope he makes some steps forward.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: Now, obviously, everyone in the comments was roasting him, but or that account.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: So, but if if they think Oregon would be a top 15 team with him at the helm, boy, I feel a little better about it.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: PFF aka pro football focus.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: So they don't really dapple into the college football stuff until they're talking NFL draft.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: Obviously, they didn't know what they were talking about if they still thought Tyler Shuck was on Oregon.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: So uh I think they had Texas Tech like 78 or something like that, which you know, I get it.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: I understand where the national media isn't giving us attention, they shouldn't.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: We don't deserve it from the past couple years that we've been, you know, what what we put out on the field, but I really do think this year is gonna be different.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: And uh I I I like I'd be willing to take that bet that we mentioned earlier.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: I really would.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: Me too.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: And I will just let the haters sleep on us, let them think we're gonna finish ninth because if that means we're gonna catch them sleepy, more power to us.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: I like being slept on, I like being the team that isn't talked about and we just overperform, chip on our shoulder.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: We have that mentality, that fake mentality that Chris Beard thinks he has.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Stay in the fight, shut up street dogs, trash boy.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: God, I know you can't.
- 17:31SPEAKER_03: One one more thing about that is what a comparison in character between Tim Tadlock and Chris Beard, too.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like Tim Tadlock knew immediately to take uh you know, Kirby Coke cut hopping on that, and Tim Tadlock just being true to his school and not you know, I don't know.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Maybe I'm just speaking straight from emotion right now, but with the way Chris Beard left, like he snuck out the back door from a McDonald's.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: I just I could never see Tim Tadlock ever doing that, even if he left.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: So um just I'm but I'm so glad we have our homie for life.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: For real, Tim Tadlock stays here.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, I do need to bring your mood down though, because unfortunately, Texas Tech Basketball lost a piece of the last couple years.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, Avery Benson uh has decided to enter the transfer portal uh for Texas Tech Basketball.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Uh it sucks because he's such a fan favorite.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: He's a guy that represents the university with the most class and you know always puts out effort on the court and everything like that.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, you can really understand where he's coming from.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Uh, we we got a lot of guys in the transfer portal at that guard position.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, he probably wasn't gonna get a lot of playing time this coming year.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: Um, and he deserves to go someplace where he can actually play in his final years of college basketball.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: Our poor Huckleberry is gonna be someone else's Huckleberry, but he's gonna be our Huckleberry for life, dang it.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: He'll be a Red Raider to me forever.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: Um the memories he's made with us.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: Man, he was the last guy on our championship team to uh that that was still left in the locker room.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: And you know, you're totally last last player.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: Last player, you're right, you're right.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: Um, it I'm gonna I'm gonna be selfishly.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: I'm a little sad that we're losing a veterancy guy in the locker room, lose that leader, that that older guy who's been there, done that with the uh to help out the younger guys.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: Um and just he's just a good presence to have around.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: And obviously he's a huge fan favorite, always walking around with a signature 10-gallon hat on and just looking like he is Mr.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: West Texas.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: But I'm I'm with you, man.
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: I I want him to go and be a star on somebody else's team so he can actually get the minutes he deserves because he's been sitting, he's he's been on this team for a long time, and unfortunately, his minutes haven't really counted up as the years have gone on.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: And he's actually a good player.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: There's like this isn't one of these normal bench warmers that comes off the bench and everybody cheers because they're actually pretty bad.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: This guy's good and he works his butt off.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: He husks, I mean, he really has that, and this year he had that corner three lockdown.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: He plays really good, solid defense.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: He's sneaky athletic.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, a team would really benefit from getting Avery Benson on their on their roster.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: So, and he's not confirmed officially to leave Texas Tech.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: He just put his name in the transfer portal, but you know, you have to think with everybody that we've added recently, uh, that he he just won't get playing time.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: And really, it would just be kind of a player coach kind of position if he does come back to tech.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: So hopefully, if he wants to play basketball, hopefully he finds a team where he can get a lot of minutes.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Well, some program is gonna be to get a really great player and a really great guy, and a lot of experience with him, too.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: So uh all the props to him, man.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: Guns up with him forever.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna be cheering for him no matter where he goes.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: So I think that leaves two scholarships open for us if we want to use them.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know we have that group of players already, and I uh Ethan Duncan, I think, is on academic scholarship, but not athletic scholarship, is what I think we've been hearing.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: Nice little slip around, huh?
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, I don't know.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: That doesn't stink.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: That doesn't stink.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: So, you know, get you get you in there, get a couple more scholarships open just in case we want to add a few more players late in the game.
- 21:11SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's still a long time until basketball season starts, so uh enough time.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: I know a lot of these guys haven't even gotten to Lubbock yet.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, so uh a lot of time left.
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: There's a couple guys maybe in possibility, maybe that are testing.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: You know, we have a scholarship open in case TJ wants to come back.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: We have a scholarship open in case we want to add somebody that's potentially testing the pro waters and decides to come back to college basketball.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: So um Mark Adams and Code doing work as usual, but we are gonna miss Avery Benson.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: But and the future is still bright as ever with a like uh like I said, only player that's left in the locker room that's been to the national championship because exactly the our captain no captain is well aware of what it's like to be there at every at a lot of levels.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: I think we have three guys of.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Officially, that were on that 2019 staff, uh, which was of course Mark Adams.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: Darryl Dora just returned as a uh, I'm not sure his role yet on the basketball team, but he's coming in as like a mentor, uh, you know, coach, something.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: I don't know his like a player advisor.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's like an advisor, yeah, something like that.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: So he was on that 2019 uh staff, and of course, and I think Sean Sutton was as well.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: So we have three guys that have been there before that know what it takes to get back to that level, and we have a lot of room and a lot of possibility to get back to that level.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: I think I don't think anyone here is worried about the the the hands that the basketball program is in.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: Basketball and baseball were good.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Matt Wells get it together.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: Matt Wells, we want to be able to say it during the season that was tremendous.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: Tremendous, unbelievable.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: Oh man.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: So man, I there's not much else left for Texas Tech News, but I did have a shout-out, unless you had something else.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: I I don't think uh there's anything else on my end.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Okay, I had a shout-out because this is the first time in a long time that I've truly felt that sports are back.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: It was this past weekend, NBA playoffs started.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: Uh the PGA tour was going on.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: Phil Mickelson with a great win uh over there, 50 years old, unbelievable.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: But uh first time we've really seen big crowds at these huge events.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Um, it was awesome to see, dude.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: I I mean watching that Knicks Hawks game, seeing Madison Square Garden uh live as ever, you know, a bunch of people around, uh, the people following Phil Mickelson as he was finishing up his last hole.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Uh, it was really cool to see and really fun.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I just wanted to, you know, touch on that because it's really cool seeing the sports are back.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: We we as a society and culture need our sports so bad.
- 23:57SPEAKER_03: It's way more important than some people give it credit for.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Um, it's just such a cambro cambrodery we all share together, you know, whether we're cheering for the same guy or not.
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: So it just ties us together, it makes us happy, makes us sad in a good way.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: So I I couldn't agree more.
- 24:12SPEAKER_03: And I I'm gonna piggyback on top of that.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: I was just with my with my family at uh at at the first ever NASCAR race here in Austin at uh the circuit of the Americas.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: And man, I it's the same thing.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: A great NASCAR crowd there, and everyone was just having a great time drinking beers and watching some fast loud cars.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, dude.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: And and coming from me who who's worked in sports, and I know a lot of people that came that lost their job due to COVID because no fans equals you know, a ton of lost jobs, a lot of opportunities for a lot of people.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Something that went under the radar, I think, of you know, and COVID was massive, obviously.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: A lot of people lost their jobs, but um getting seeing jobs opening back up in the sports field because fans are showing back up, uh, it's just really cool to see, and really cool to see some colleagues, you know, still being able to work in that field and stuff like that.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, just big time, really, really cool stuff this weekend.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're pro sports on the sports podcast.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Yes, we are.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: We like sports.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: We don't like how they make us feel sometimes, but you know.
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, we're Texas Tech fans, we're used to it.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: So and football.
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:22SPEAKER_03: So we're we are we we are on the moon with baseball right now.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: So yeah, we are baseball rocks and basketball.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: Everything rocks, everything rocks, even this season's gonna be tremendous.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: This football season, tremendous.
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: Also, shout out Trey Young because he he totally called out Texas Tech in that post-game interview when he was talking to him.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, the the Madison Square Garden crowd was giving him some FU chance, you know, classic stuff.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: As Texas Tech fans, we know that all too well.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, and he's one and oh in Madison Square Garden when he was getting FU Trey Young chance.
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: He is 0-1 in Lubbock, Texas at the United Supermarkets arena when getting FU Trey Young chance.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: So is Lubbock better than New York?
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: Probably.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: I I would I would say we're probably a rowdier crowd than Madison Square Garden in the USA.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: You have a bunch of you have a bunch of college kids and a bunch of rowdy Lubbock guites just out there supporting the Red Raiders.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: I think there's there's probably a little more passion running through that building.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: Maybe so.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: Maybe so.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: Especially whenever you're playing a team like uh Oklahoma.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Oklahoma Sooners.
- 26:27SPEAKER_03: And and and and a young man that you thought maybe should have been at Texas Tech.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: I do like Trey Young, though.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: I know that's kind of him.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: No, I a lot of people thought we were ripping on him with that tweet, but you know, we're not ripping on him.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: We just thought it was a cool coincidence.
- 26:42SPEAKER_02: Trey seems like a stand-up dude.
- 26:43SPEAKER_02: Obviously, his dad played at tech, he's still a big Texas Tech guy.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, shout out Trey Young.
- 26:50SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Sports are back, baby.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: Sports are back, all right, man.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: Let's end it off.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: This is a shorter episode, but let's end it off right here.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: Song of the week.
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: You go ahead, Tristan.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: All right, you know me.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go with a local Texas act.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go with a country rock band, the Vandaliers.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: And I'm gonna go with their one, they're more of a rock band.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: They like their upbeat jams, but I'm gonna go with their one of their slow songs that I think is just really well written.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: It's such a such a simple message, but it hits hard.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: It's called Cigarettes in the Rain.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: And it's just about trying to trying to trying to light up in the rain, you know, trying to smoke a cigarette in the rain and how tough that is.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: But it's also just you know, kind of symbolic on some things in life.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: So it's just it's it's it makes sense when you hear it.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: I think it's a great song.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: Uh simple message, but that's just it's three chords on the truth.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: That's country music, baby.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: And I deal like my world hasn't changed.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: Sax smoking cigarettes in the rain.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: Another good local choice for you.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: I have a theme to this song of the week.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: It is uh upcoming is Memorial Day weekend, big lake day, big river day for a lot of people, wishing uh good weather upon to everybody that is going out and celebrating on this Memorial Day weekend.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: I'm picking a song that is always good for the river, always good for the lake.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's gonna be Brad Paisley.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna miss her.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, my song of the week.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: It is probably the best lake song there is.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: Everybody knows it, everybody screams it when it comes on.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: It's just great.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, when you think of being on the lake, you think of this song.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Arguably the funniest country song ever made, too.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's fantastic.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: Brad uh like young Brad Paisley, and and Brad Paisley's been pretty consistent throughout his whole career, but young Brad Paisley had some bangers.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, and that's probably the biggest banger he had as a young man.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: And I I still can't skip that song, and I have to sing it.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: So good one, good one to be drinking on, good one to be by the water on.
- 28:51SPEAKER_05: She'd be packing all her things, and she be gone by new.
- 29:02SPEAKER_04: Well, I'm gonna miss her.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Good one to add to our talk in tech songs of the week playlist, which you can find on Apple Music and Spotify.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: We'll link it always on Twitter.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: Um, man, that I'm just hoping for a happy Memorial Day weekend.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: We have a wedding coming up for our friends Emily and Ryan.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, we're we're gonna have a good time.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: I'll be at one as well, sir.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Very nice wedding season.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: I'll be in college station.
- 29:30SPEAKER_03: Yikes, Michael is lucky I grew up with him and love him because a wedding in college station, bud.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, what are you doing to us, non-aggies?
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: Well, we have to go to Shreveport, Louisiana.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: So we're not okay.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: Well, we'll we'll call it maybe even then.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know the wedding venue, I'm sure, is beautiful.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: I I just know Shreepport gets a lot of crap.
- 29:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm not I'm new to Louisiana, so uh, you know, we'll see how it goes, but I'm sure it's gonna be great.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: We're gonna have a lot of fun this weekend, regardless.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: All right, sounds like we'll both uh have a mini sodas this weekend.
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: Uh a soda or two.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: But all right, man, let's end it off on this shorter episode of Talk and Tech Pod, episode 42, I believe.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: We are eight away from the big 5-0, so look out for that in the next coming months, talking tech listeners.
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: But we're gonna end it like always.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: You can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.

- 30:43SPEAKER_02: So always, we're always gonna end it off like this.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: Always, wreck em tech.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: Wreck'em tech.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: Uh wow.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 31:11SPEAKER_06: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan, thanks for coming out.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: Uh we fed off of it.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
