- 0:00Speaker 1: What's going on, everybody. It's Jeff. I wanted to let
- 0:02Speaker 1: you know we recorded this podcast episode on Monday, August nineteenth,
- 0:05Speaker 1: twenty twenty four. By the time you hear this, some
- 0:07Speaker 1: things may have changed here or there, but we hope
- 0:09Speaker 1: you enjoy the show. Welcome to Table Talk here at
- 0:32Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly
- 0:35Speaker 1: Philly sports podcast show in the world, that's right over
- 0:38Speaker 1: eleven years strong. Got a great discussion coming your way
- 0:41Speaker 1: on Table Talk this week. This Philadelphia Eagles preseason. It's
- 0:46Speaker 1: almost in the books. Yeah, there still is some time
- 0:48Speaker 1: left for guys on the bubble to make this team.
- 0:52Speaker 1: What are some of the storylines that we've really been
- 0:54Speaker 1: following here, whether it's Nakobe Dean, whether it's what the
- 0:57Speaker 1: running back room is gonna look like. The excitement of
- 1:00Speaker 1: this Eagles upcoming season is very real. It's right in
- 1:04Speaker 1: our faces. We've got a great discussion, folks. We've got
- 1:07Speaker 1: a fantastic guest, great interview coming your way. Let's get
- 1:10Speaker 1: right to it joining us this week to get into
- 1:13Speaker 1: this Philadelphia Eagles preseason and a ton of storylines. You
- 1:17Speaker 1: can hear him on All About the Birds. Great podcast
- 1:20Speaker 1: I subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow him on the Twitter
- 1:22Speaker 1: slash x at Chip for the Birds. We've got our
- 1:25Speaker 1: good friendship, Kegy. How you doing, Buddy, Well, what's going on?
- 1:28Speaker 2: Thanks for having me excited for some Eagles chat and
- 1:31Speaker 2: some Eagles football eighteen days away from the time we
- 1:34Speaker 2: are recording.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Eighteen days that's what we have here. But hold on
- 1:38Speaker 1: really quick, though, Chip, before we get into some Eagles talk. Yes,
- 1:42Speaker 1: you are an umpire. You are an umpire and you're
- 1:44Speaker 1: umping a lot of little here. You have so many
- 1:46Speaker 1: games under your belt. And I wanted to bring this
- 1:48Speaker 1: up just because of the fact that my buddy and
- 1:51Speaker 1: co host Eric here on the show. He coaches little league,
- 1:54Speaker 1: He coaches his son's basketball games during the winter time,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and it's because if it's not folks like you, these
- 2:01Speaker 1: sports are gonna go away for our kids. And I
- 2:03Speaker 1: just got to say, man, it is great that you
- 2:05Speaker 1: do what you do umping games. I've got a colleague
- 2:07Speaker 1: of mine who does it as well, you know, with
- 2:10Speaker 1: the county political scene that I'm involved in, and he
- 2:14Speaker 1: does it as well. And if it wasn't for folks
- 2:16Speaker 1: like you, you get a lot of games under your
- 2:17Speaker 1: belt at this point right.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah, So if you had told me about nine years
- 2:22Speaker 2: ago that I would be pretty much a full time
- 2:25Speaker 2: umpire because I only signed up because my kids league
- 2:28Speaker 2: needed umpires, so I kind of learned how to do
- 2:30Speaker 2: it a little bit, was awful, and then I got
- 2:34Speaker 2: trained by some really great umpires. As as this recording
- 2:39Speaker 2: is happening, I have done one hundred and sixty four
- 2:42Speaker 2: games this year that ranges from Little League to PI
- 2:47Speaker 2: Double A to Men's League to Legion to Perky League
- 2:54Speaker 2: to pretty much anybody that wants me to umpire game year.
- 3:00Speaker 2: I'm kind of doing as much as possible to see
- 3:02Speaker 2: if there's any things I don't want to do for
- 3:04Speaker 2: the future. Yeah, but I think with fall ball coming through,
- 3:07Speaker 2: it's potential that I could hit two hundred this calendar year.
- 3:11Speaker 1: We need more folks like you and out there, if
- 3:13Speaker 1: you're listening to this, you we need more folks like
- 3:14Speaker 1: like Jim.
- 3:15Speaker 2: But zero ejections in one hundred and sixty four games,
- 3:19Speaker 2: zero zero zero.
- 3:21Speaker 1: You mean people are behaving that well, they're actually behaving
- 3:24Speaker 1: that well.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Well, I mean, Jeff, you know this. I'm also a teacher,
- 3:28Speaker 2: so I'm able to utilize some of my classroom management
- 3:32Speaker 2: strategies as people in the game. Like I was doing
- 3:35Speaker 2: a game with a partner who wasn't as well trained
- 3:38Speaker 2: just this week, and it was men's league, and everyone
- 3:39Speaker 2: was getting a little contentious, and I was able to
- 3:43Speaker 2: escort players back to their sidelines and tell them to
- 3:46Speaker 2: knock it off so that they were able to stay
- 3:49Speaker 2: in the game.
- 3:50Speaker 1: All right, very nice, All right, Well again, folks, if
- 3:53Speaker 1: you want to get involved in your kids after school activities,
- 3:57Speaker 1: whether it's baseball, basketball, whatever the sport is, you gotta do.
- 4:00Speaker 1: What are these sports are gonna end up going away
- 4:02Speaker 1: for our kids. So that being said, let's getting some
- 4:05Speaker 1: Eagles talk here. It's last week of training camp, Chip,
- 4:08Speaker 1: and there are some guys who are gonna be heading
- 4:11Speaker 1: out of town in the New York FO.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah, And I have to say I'm likely gonna be
- 4:16Speaker 1: eating my words here, words that I spoke on the
- 4:18Speaker 1: All About the Birds podcast with you and Johnny a
- 4:21Speaker 1: few weeks ago. At the time, it seemed like a
- 4:24Speaker 1: bonte Maddox was, you know, maybe not at least for me,
- 4:29Speaker 1: thinking because the cornerback room was so full of talent
- 4:32Speaker 1: that he might be a cap casualty or a cut,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I should say, not cap casualty, but cut perhaps. And
- 4:38Speaker 1: I honestly wasn't trying to do like a hot take
- 4:40Speaker 1: because I'm terrible with hot takes. We are terrible with
- 4:43Speaker 1: hot takes on this podcast platform. But there was a
- 4:47Speaker 1: lot of talent in that cornerback room. We're seeing things
- 4:49Speaker 1: playing out, But it seems like a Bonti Maddox is
- 4:52Speaker 1: likely going to be making this Eagles team this season.
- 4:55Speaker 1: But the question is if he's going to remain on
- 4:58Speaker 1: this roster, Like where does he fit, whether it is
- 5:00Speaker 1: slot corner or whether it's safety. He's certainly comfortable at
- 5:05Speaker 1: slot corner again, been playing that safety role here. What
- 5:08Speaker 1: are your thoughts about Vonte Maddox and where he could
- 5:11Speaker 1: fit in the future with this Vic Fangioe defense.
- 5:14Speaker 2: So, I think one thing that we have to discuss
- 5:17Speaker 2: is the fact that we have witnessed over the last
- 5:20Speaker 2: couple of days some cuts of the dead weight in
- 5:25Speaker 2: the Eagles cornerback room, Guys that weren't going to make
- 5:28Speaker 2: the team, so they kind of just cut them loose.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I think that one thing that we weren't really expecting
- 5:33Speaker 2: is the Cooper de Gene injury, which delayed him just
- 5:37Speaker 2: becoming the nickel corner, and it made Avonte Maddox really
- 5:42Speaker 2: really important to stick around. I think the other thing
- 5:45Speaker 2: that's really important is Isaiah Rodgers has shown sheer excellence.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I think Quinnon Mitchell has shown excellence. So you've got
- 5:52Speaker 2: a bunch of guys that have to develop. Avonte Maddox
- 5:55Speaker 2: is a nickel corner. That is what he does. Yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 2: And I think the the other thing that is interesting
- 6:02Speaker 2: to me is James Bradberry, who looked awful at corner
- 6:09Speaker 2: last year. They completely removed from the corner side of things.
- 6:13Speaker 2: They're trying him at safety and he's getting burned all
- 6:16Speaker 2: over again. So I could see Bradberry making his way
- 6:21Speaker 2: out of town if anybody'll even pick him up. Avante
- 6:24Speaker 2: kind of doing that hybrid nickel and cross training at
- 6:28Speaker 2: the safety because he has experienced it both until Cooper
- 6:31Speaker 2: dejene is ready to take over full time at the
- 6:33Speaker 2: Nickel plus Keiley Ringoes look ad. I mean, yeah, like
- 6:36Speaker 2: we said, it's it's an enjoyable problem to have. I
- 6:40Speaker 2: don't see Avonte Maddox going anywhere unless you see some
- 6:44Speaker 2: injuries and we can kind of over sell our worth
- 6:48Speaker 2: of him right right.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I think that's a great point too. And again, like
- 6:51Speaker 1: I said, I'm eating my words because on the All
- 6:53Speaker 1: About the Words podcast, I was like, I can actually
- 6:55Speaker 1: see Avonte Maddox possibly getting cut. But again, I was
- 6:59Speaker 1: under the impression that Cooper de jan was probably going
- 7:01Speaker 1: to be getting onto the field at some point here,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and you know, it's been it's been a little disappointing
- 7:07Speaker 1: that it's taken him such a long time to nurse
- 7:11Speaker 1: that injury. But another part of this defense that I
- 7:14Speaker 1: wanted to dive into with you, Chip is the linebacker position,
- 7:18Speaker 1: specifically na Kobe Dean. I mean, he's had a nice
- 7:21Speaker 1: he had a nice, very nice second preseason game against
- 7:24Speaker 1: the Patriots. He's been such a high energy guy all
- 7:27Speaker 1: throughout camp and throughout this preseason, and two weeks ago
- 7:30Speaker 1: I thought they'd be showing him the door potentially, but
- 7:33Speaker 1: I'm not so sure. Now do you think Nakobe Dean
- 7:37Speaker 1: makes this roster And what might his impact be if
- 7:40Speaker 1: he if he is able to stay healthy this season?
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yes, I mean, the the health is obviously, like you
- 7:46Speaker 2: just mentioned, the biggest thing. We got rid of some
- 7:50Speaker 2: really quality linebackers two years ago with the understanding of
- 7:55Speaker 2: Nakobe Dean was going to take over, and since then
- 7:59Speaker 2: he has not lived up to it. Yes, short answer,
- 8:04Speaker 2: he makes this roster. You're not getting rid of a
- 8:06Speaker 2: first round talent before you've really seen him play a season.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And I kind of go back to the idea of
- 8:14Speaker 2: the Eagles are in this weird area where they're trying
- 8:17Speaker 2: to hold onto players as long as they can, and
- 8:19Speaker 2: I think of like Kavon Wallace, right, Kevon Wallace was
- 8:22Speaker 2: a pretty decent draft pick as far as where he
- 8:27Speaker 2: was picked, but they gave him chance after chance after
- 8:30Speaker 2: opportunity after opportunity until they realized, hey, this wasn't going
- 8:34Speaker 2: to work out. They cross trained in multiple positions when
- 8:37Speaker 2: na Kobe Dean, they really do need to hit on
- 8:40Speaker 2: that pick. And I mean, obviously the likelihood of every
- 8:42Speaker 2: single Georgia Bulldog being a success is not, you know,
- 8:47Speaker 2: it's not a very likely scenario. But I think that
- 8:51Speaker 2: they're I mean, they went out and they signed Devin White,
- 8:54Speaker 2: who they knew was going to be a starter. I
- 8:56Speaker 2: think they were pleasantly surprised that Zach Bond is doing
- 9:00Speaker 2: everything that he is and that Jeremiah Trotter Junior is
- 9:05Speaker 2: kind of already playing higher. So again, we've got good linebackers,
- 9:10Speaker 2: but the depth behind those main four is quite honestly
- 9:15Speaker 2: a little embarrassing. Yeah, I mean, Ben Dan Sumer cool,
- 9:20Speaker 2: but Orrin Burk's, Brandon Smith. I mean, these are guys
- 9:22Speaker 2: that are not phenomenal linebackers. And I know that the
- 9:25Speaker 2: way the Eagles run their offense is they kind of
- 9:27Speaker 2: they trickle those edge rushers into the secondary, that back nine,
- 9:32Speaker 2: that back seven. So Nolan Smith is kind of like
- 9:35Speaker 2: also a linebacker, and you know they're looking at some
- 9:38Speaker 2: of these other guys, which is great, but you need
- 9:43Speaker 2: classically trained linebackers to do what they do. I think
- 9:46Speaker 2: na Kobe Dean needs some game time. I think he
- 9:50Speaker 2: needs some regular season time. Yes, he's got to stay healthy.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I mean, he makes this roster, there is no doubt
- 9:57Speaker 2: in my mind. But he's backing up Uh, He's backing
- 10:03Speaker 2: up Devin Wright and Zach Bond Yep. Yeah, I mean
- 10:07Speaker 2: he is a backup, which is very surprising because that
- 10:10Speaker 2: was not the game plan for him even going into
- 10:12Speaker 2: last year. And I think the thing for me that's
- 10:14Speaker 2: interesting and kind of going back to the Avonte Maddocks
- 10:16Speaker 2: piece is you got to look at what this team's
- 10:19Speaker 2: goal is. Obviously, you want to develop talent for the future,
- 10:23Speaker 2: but this is a team that is capable of winning
- 10:25Speaker 2: a super Bowl this season. So if Nacobe Dean isn't ready,
- 10:29Speaker 2: if Cooper dejen isn't ready to compete at a super
- 10:32Speaker 2: Bowl caliber, you have to have guys in front of
- 10:36Speaker 2: them that have already been there.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Right right, Absolutely, And I think with Nakobe Dean, like
- 10:41Speaker 1: you said, it's so so important, so critical that he
- 10:44Speaker 1: actually gets playing time during the exactly. Yeah, that's the
- 10:48Speaker 1: only way that NFL talent is going to be able
- 10:50Speaker 1: to develop. They can't just do it in practice. And
- 10:52Speaker 1: we love hearing in practice that he is, you know,
- 10:54Speaker 1: kind of a past defended, past defended here, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 1: deflection here. We love that, but you know what, we
- 11:00Speaker 1: haven't seen it in games, and it's going to be
- 11:03Speaker 1: a little different going against number one wide receivers. Number
- 11:06Speaker 1: one tight ends in terms of covering in space. So
- 11:09Speaker 1: he needs that that experience, that in game experience.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And I think the thing that you mentioned, I mean,
- 11:15Speaker 2: I'm not even worried so much about the wide receivers because,
- 11:19Speaker 2: like we've already mentioned, our cornerback room. That's their job.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Their job, and the safety is that we have as
- 11:27Speaker 2: an organization for as long as I can remember, off
- 11:31Speaker 2: the top of my head, been absolutely scorched by tight
- 11:35Speaker 2: end after tight end after tight end, and especially.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Because intermediate routes, especially in the interview rods.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Yes, and it's because they have put no value into
- 11:46Speaker 2: the linebacking room. So when I think of, Okay, in
- 11:50Speaker 2: order to make the Super Bowl, na Kobe Dean is
- 11:54Speaker 2: going to have to be able to one on one
- 11:56Speaker 2: bring down George Kittle in open space. Then if we
- 12:00Speaker 2: get to the Super Bowl, Nakobe Dean is going to
- 12:03Speaker 2: have to be able to bring down one on one
- 12:05Speaker 2: Travis Kelcey in space.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Yes, And I don't see.
- 12:09Speaker 2: That happening yet because I haven't seen it happen. And
- 12:13Speaker 2: they mentioned all the time, you know, well, they're playing
- 12:15Speaker 2: in the preseason against guys who probably won't make the roster,
- 12:18Speaker 2: and that's great that they look good against them, but
- 12:20Speaker 2: they are not all pro level talent right exactly.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Well, before we move over to the offense here, we've
- 12:27Speaker 1: seen certainly seen ups and downs from this defense throughout
- 12:29Speaker 1: the past couple of weeks. During this preseason. Chip'm wondering, like, what,
- 12:34Speaker 1: what has you most concerned about the Eagles defense here
- 12:37Speaker 1: in this preseason that could potentially, you know, stick with
- 12:41Speaker 1: this team into the regular season. Do you have one
- 12:44Speaker 1: specific concern that you're like, you know what, they got
- 12:46Speaker 1: to write this ship here, it's gonna it's gonna create
- 12:49Speaker 1: some problems right out of the gate.
- 12:51Speaker 2: So I think that, and it's it's a good question.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I mean, I think that my biggest concern is looking
- 12:58Speaker 2: at what this Eagles had last year with guys like
- 13:03Speaker 2: Fletcher Cox, with Hassan Reddick, with these guys who were
- 13:08Speaker 2: constantly getting pressure. When we played against the Ravens in
- 13:14Speaker 2: the first preseason game, we did play a decent amount
- 13:17Speaker 2: of our starters against their second team defense or their
- 13:23Speaker 2: second team offense, and they moved the ball on us.
- 13:26Speaker 2: And again it was early in the preseason, So again
- 13:29Speaker 2: I'm not putting a ton of.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Stock on it.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It's a concern, and I think that from that middle
- 13:35Speaker 2: those a those A gaps where Jordan Davis and Jalen
- 13:39Speaker 2: Carter and Milton Williams have absolutely got to be more
- 13:42Speaker 2: destructive so that Josh Sweat and Bryce Huff can really
- 13:46Speaker 2: step up. I mean, I don't want to be traveling
- 13:49Speaker 2: all the way down to Patrick Johnson as the high
- 13:52Speaker 2: point of our pass rush. We gotta start getting to
- 13:57Speaker 2: the quarterback. Because if you're able to get to quarterback
- 13:59Speaker 2: and I've seen this one, you know, back when we
- 14:01Speaker 2: played against Tom Brady and you hit him, and you
- 14:02Speaker 2: played against Peyton Manning and you hit him, they don't
- 14:04Speaker 2: pick you apart. It doesn't expose that glaring weakness with
- 14:09Speaker 2: the linebackers like it does when you don't get to
- 14:13Speaker 2: the quarterback. Yep.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Absolutely, all right, Well let's move to the offense now.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I really wanted to talk about this running back room
- 14:20Speaker 1: here because it's it's fascinating to me what we're gonna
- 14:23Speaker 1: end up seeing during this regular season. With the exception
- 14:26Speaker 1: of Kenny Gainwell, in my opinion, I can't wait to
- 14:29Speaker 1: see what Saquon Barkley and Will Shipley do this coming year.
- 14:32Speaker 1: I mean, there were some folks out there that were
- 14:34Speaker 1: pooh poohing the Shipley pick and what he's shown us
- 14:38Speaker 1: thus far here in camp and these preseason games has
- 14:42Speaker 1: been pretty impressive for a rookie, I believe, and yes
- 14:45Speaker 1: it is still the preseason. That's the caveat, But the
- 14:47Speaker 1: Eagles rushing attack I think is heading to that next
- 14:51Speaker 1: level chip here, and I do wonder if it may
- 14:54Speaker 1: potentially be at the level of the Baltimore Ravens and
- 14:57Speaker 1: if the rushing game will be the offense's identity this
- 15:02Speaker 1: coming season. Here, I wonder what your thoughts are with this.
- 15:04Speaker 1: You know, if you thought about this, where the rushing
- 15:06Speaker 1: attack is really going to go with this team and
- 15:08Speaker 1: potentially defining what this season might be offensively.
- 15:12Speaker 2: So there is no doubt the Jeffrey Lurry and friends
- 15:18Speaker 2: do not consider a running game sexy. They don't. We've
- 15:23Speaker 2: heard it when they hired Siriani. We heard it just
- 15:26Speaker 2: about every single which way. They do not enjoy running
- 15:29Speaker 2: the ball. It is not key for explosive plays. The
- 15:31Speaker 2: fact that they went out and they spent money on
- 15:34Speaker 2: Saquon Barkley kind of blew my mind a little bit
- 15:36Speaker 2: after just very recently not spending money on Miles Sanders,
- 15:41Speaker 2: who has some slight less mileage on the tires. With
- 15:47Speaker 2: that being said, this Eagles offensive line, even even now
- 15:53Speaker 2: you know having lost Jason Kelsey, is one of the
- 15:58Speaker 2: most dominant in football. They can move the ball and
- 16:04Speaker 2: offensive linemen enjoy run blocking because it means they get
- 16:08Speaker 2: to go attack right. Pass blocking it's more defensive. It's
- 16:12Speaker 2: keeping your quarterback clean. I think, look, I really like
- 16:16Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts. I think that he kind of got a
- 16:18Speaker 2: raw deal last year, and because he had to be
- 16:21Speaker 2: about ninety seven percent of the offense meeting, he was
- 16:24Speaker 2: either throwing and taking a hit or he was running
- 16:26Speaker 2: and taking a hit and the brotherly shove and taking aim.
- 16:29Speaker 2: He got beat up last year and we saw it early.
- 16:33Speaker 2: They have to be more balanced. When this Eagles team
- 16:36Speaker 2: is most successful, it is when they are grinding you down,
- 16:40Speaker 2: pounding you into the ground, and then when they start
- 16:44Speaker 2: to creep up extra men into the box, you're throwing
- 16:47Speaker 2: over top. Look, we've got incredible wide receivers. We've got
- 16:50Speaker 2: a I don't want to say an incredible tight end.
- 16:52Speaker 2: We've got a good tight end. Yet I am not
- 16:56Speaker 2: high on Dallas Godter as one of the elite tight ends.
- 16:59Speaker 2: It's it's a struggle. It's that's my personal issue. He's
- 17:03Speaker 2: good for one drop a game. But if you look
- 17:07Speaker 2: at this rushing attack and you're able to get five
- 17:10Speaker 2: six yards on first down, it opens up your playbook right,
- 17:15Speaker 2: and last year, going into it saying Kenny Gainwill is
- 17:18Speaker 2: our starting running back was a mistake, yes, right, Going
- 17:22Speaker 2: into it saying Boston Scott is going to be a
- 17:26Speaker 2: huge contributing member was a mistake. When you had DeAndre Swift,
- 17:32Speaker 2: who when you allowed him to run the ball, seriously,
- 17:36Speaker 2: had two very very good games, exceptional games. Those were
- 17:41Speaker 2: probably the best that we look. So now you add
- 17:44Speaker 2: a Saquon Barkley, you add a guy who has never
- 17:49Speaker 2: in the NFL played behind this caliber of offensive line,
- 17:52Speaker 2: who has never really played with this caliber of quarterback,
- 17:56Speaker 2: who is a weapon in and of himself. I think
- 18:00Speaker 2: this rushing attack could be very good. And I like
- 18:03Speaker 2: Gain well as a spell back as coming out of
- 18:06Speaker 2: the backfield, lining up in the slot. When you look
- 18:09Speaker 2: at Will Shipley, I like him kind of cross training
- 18:11Speaker 2: as almost a fullback. Right. I am a huge fullback fan,
- 18:16Speaker 2: like bring back the fullback right right, Yes, let him
- 18:19Speaker 2: carry the ball and get those one to two tough yards.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Let him block. He's a good blocking running back. Past
- 18:27Speaker 2: those guys, I don't think they have anybody in the
- 18:28Speaker 2: tight end in the running back room. Lou Nichols isn't
- 18:32Speaker 2: making this team. Tyry and Davis Price is making this team.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Kendall Milton is not making this team. These are training
- 18:37Speaker 2: camp guys to eat of carries the Saquon Barkley should
- 18:40Speaker 2: be getting somewhere between eighteen to twenty three carries a
- 18:46Speaker 2: game if you want this offense to really be as
- 18:49Speaker 2: exceptional as it can be.
- 18:50Speaker 1: And balance too. You use the word balance, and I
- 18:52Speaker 1: have yes, I absolutely think that's critical with this offense
- 18:56Speaker 1: this coming season. But there's another aspect of this offense
- 19:00Speaker 1: that is going to be critical if Jalen Hurts does
- 19:02Speaker 1: go down, and that's the backup quarterback position here. So
- 19:05Speaker 1: let's get into quarterback two here. Dam Tanner McKay man.
- 19:10Speaker 1: He seems to be the clear number two quarterback on
- 19:14Speaker 1: this team during this entire preseason. Kenny Pickett's noodle alarm
- 19:18Speaker 1: just isn't cutting it for me, and I know a
- 19:19Speaker 1: lot of the other fans out there as well. What
- 19:23Speaker 1: do you think really should happen with quarterback two back
- 19:26Speaker 1: up to Jalen Hurts moving into this season here? I
- 19:30Speaker 1: mean there's a lot of back and forth with this,
- 19:32Speaker 1: and of course, what the Eagles did trading for Kenny Pickett,
- 19:35Speaker 1: giving up some assets to get him. But it's been
- 19:38Speaker 1: amazing what we've seen from these two, you know, quarterback two,
- 19:41Speaker 1: quarterback three type of guys. Here, Tanner McKey looks like
- 19:44Speaker 1: the guy what are your thoughts? Man?
- 19:46Speaker 2: So if you listen to Nick Sirianni, which I did,
- 19:50Speaker 2: he he said flat out well because he was asked
- 19:53Speaker 2: this question, you know, Tanner's kind of looked better, and
- 19:55Speaker 2: he said, well, Kenny had a good game too, like
- 19:58Speaker 2: not a lot of balls at the ground. I mean,
- 19:59Speaker 2: if number one, this team goes as far as Jalen
- 20:03Speaker 2: Hurts takes them, right, this team is built around Jalen
- 20:06Speaker 2: Hurts for his particular skill set. In my opinion, Tanner
- 20:11Speaker 2: McKee has looked good against guys that probably will not
- 20:16Speaker 2: be playing NFL football this season.
- 20:17Speaker 1: That's fair, which.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Again, which again, that's what the preseason is for. I
- 20:22Speaker 2: really enjoy Tanner McKee's confidence. He is willing to throw
- 20:27Speaker 2: the ball places that only his receiver is gonna go
- 20:30Speaker 2: get it. Kenny Pickett looks a little more timid. He's
- 20:33Speaker 2: the check down king and that mentions the noodle or
- 20:36Speaker 2: if Jalen were to go down, I would feel more
- 20:41Speaker 2: comfortable with Kenny Pickett running this offense because again of
- 20:46Speaker 2: the balance that this offense is going to require.
- 20:50Speaker 1: That's a fair point, Yep.
- 20:52Speaker 2: You don't need a quarterback to throw you to a
- 20:56Speaker 2: championship with this offense. If that was the situation and
- 21:00Speaker 2: it came to that, yeah, I think tannermer Key is
- 21:02Speaker 2: the better arm. I feel like Kenny Pickett is the
- 21:05Speaker 2: better and already more experienced quarterback. Now, what we also
- 21:10Speaker 2: know is Howie loves a good trade deadline, so I
- 21:13Speaker 2: could see him recouping some of the picks and sending
- 21:17Speaker 2: either Tanner, Mricky or Kenny Picket somewhere. I think their
- 21:21Speaker 2: neck and neck. I think that they're good at the
- 21:23Speaker 2: things that they do. I just think that the way
- 21:25Speaker 2: that this offense is built, McKee isn't ready for the
- 21:28Speaker 2: reins yet.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I got it. I think it's fair. I absolutely think
- 21:32Speaker 1: it's fair. Again, folks, we're talking to Chipkegy from the
- 21:35Speaker 1: All About the Birds podcast. I subscribe on Apple Podcasts.
- 21:39Speaker 1: They are on every podcast platform out there, also on
- 21:43Speaker 1: YouTube as well, and you can follow Chip on the
- 21:46Speaker 1: Twitter slash x at Chip for the Birds. And before
- 21:50Speaker 1: I let you go, Buddy, want to get into a
- 21:52Speaker 1: two part bubble question for you here, I guess first,
- 21:57Speaker 1: let's start off with a certain player who makes this team.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Who you're going to be ticked off if they do so,
- 22:03Speaker 1: you're gonna be ticked off. If blank player makes this team,
- 22:06Speaker 1: who is that for me?
- 22:09Speaker 2: And again I don't consider him a bubble player just
- 22:12Speaker 2: because of what he is owed financially. But if James
- 22:17Speaker 2: Bradbury makes this team, I he number one. I have
- 22:24Speaker 2: not forgiven him for being a giant. Right, he was
- 22:27Speaker 2: a giant. So if you you know how they say
- 22:30Speaker 2: in New York, if you can make it there, you
- 22:32Speaker 2: can make it anywhere. Well, if you can't make it there,
- 22:35Speaker 2: you shouldn't be in Philadelphia. Let's start with that. James
- 22:39Speaker 2: Bradbury looked absolutely atrocious after last season, so bad, so
- 22:45Speaker 2: bad that they're like, you need to learn a different position.
- 22:48Speaker 2: And he's not like a first or second year player.
- 22:50Speaker 2: He's been in the league for you know, more than
- 22:53Speaker 2: five minutes, and they said, you're really that bad. We
- 22:56Speaker 2: went out and got a bunch of rookies and first
- 22:59Speaker 2: year players can do the job better than you. If
- 23:03Speaker 2: he's looked bad at safety because it's not his natural position, right,
- 23:07Speaker 2: If James Bradbury makes this team. I think it is
- 23:11Speaker 2: strictly out of a financial liability to get rid of him.
- 23:15Speaker 2: He's owed a decent amount of money and that's too
- 23:17Speaker 2: much dead cap money.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, it absolutely is. Although I mean we saw
- 23:22Speaker 1: what the Eagles did with regard to Carson Wentz and
- 23:24Speaker 1: the cap money that they you know, that dead cap
- 23:26Speaker 1: money that they had to spend and pay to get
- 23:28Speaker 1: rid of him. I don't know there is a precedent
- 23:31Speaker 1: for it. Let's see if they actually do it. Second
- 23:35Speaker 1: part of this question here, you're going to be ticked
- 23:38Speaker 1: off if this player is actually cut from the team.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Who's that player?
- 23:43Speaker 2: So it's the word cutting implying that they're not going
- 23:48Speaker 2: to be added right to the practice squad, or the
- 23:50Speaker 2: word cutting that yeah, but they'll be on the practice squad.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Where do you want me to go with this? Because
- 23:55Speaker 2: I have a couple.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Of thoughts because my thought process was they are cut
- 24:00Speaker 1: and even not even on the practice squad.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Okay, Johnny's new favorite player is Nick Gates and it's
- 24:12Speaker 2: because he looks like an absolute psychopath, wearing no gloves,
- 24:17Speaker 2: no tape, no elbow pads, no nothing. And I think
- 24:20Speaker 2: that he's kind of that old school throwback player where
- 24:24Speaker 2: he's gonna go and he's gonna knock somebody's block off,
- 24:27Speaker 2: and there's never too much of that on an NFL
- 24:31Speaker 2: football team. And I think about a guy like, you know,
- 24:34Speaker 2: Brett Toth, who I can't believe is still even on
- 24:36Speaker 2: a roster. Yeah, you know, I don't consider Brett Toath
- 24:39Speaker 2: very good. I would like to see Nick Gates take
- 24:41Speaker 2: that spot where he can then cross train at guard
- 24:44Speaker 2: and center, kind of like Toath is doing, but a
- 24:46Speaker 2: little more aggressively. But in my mind, like I look
- 24:49Speaker 2: at a guy like Trevor Keegan, Trevor Keegan, in my opinion,
- 24:53Speaker 2: looks good enough to start right this second. Now, I
- 24:55Speaker 2: don't know who you're replacing with because the right guard
- 24:58Speaker 2: position hasn't been as clear cut as I think it
- 25:01Speaker 2: should have been, because you know, they were like, oh,
- 25:04Speaker 2: Tyler Semole, he's been hurt. Mkay. Beckton's size is huge.
- 25:08Speaker 2: I want to see him train more at right tackle.
- 25:10Speaker 2: I would love to see Keegan getting some first team
- 25:14Speaker 2: reps and seeing he looks phenomenal.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, he absolutely has. And that's the one interesting part,
- 25:20Speaker 1: you know, as we're as we're closing out our conversation,
- 25:22Speaker 1: here is the offensive line depth heading into this season.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Ship while it is different in some ways this season,
- 25:29Speaker 1: more like we don't have certain players that have been
- 25:32Speaker 1: around for quite some time. The Jeff us goals.
- 25:34Speaker 2: And Kelse I miss Kelsey already.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Exactly, Jason Kelsey not being there. It's so bizarre. But
- 25:39Speaker 1: the fact that there is talent behind some of these starters,
- 25:43Speaker 1: it gives me hope that we're not gonna have to
- 25:46Speaker 1: plug and play and just hope and pray and cross
- 25:48Speaker 1: our fingers if Lane Johnson goes out or if something
- 25:51Speaker 1: happens with Landon Dickerson. So I am very happy with
- 25:54Speaker 1: the depth. And again it comes down to Stoutland University. Yeah,
- 25:58Speaker 1: Jeff Stotlin has been able to do in terms of
- 26:00Speaker 1: developing even the depth of this offensive line.
- 26:02Speaker 2: I mean, look, I know that they don't put in
- 26:06Speaker 2: assistant coaches and position coaches into the NFL Hall of Fame,
- 26:12Speaker 2: but if they did, Jeff Stoutland would be it should
- 26:18Speaker 2: be the Stoutland wing of assistant coaches in Ohio because
- 26:22Speaker 2: watching what he has done with guys like Jordan Mylata,
- 26:25Speaker 2: watching what he has done with making Cam Jurgens and Landon,
- 26:28Speaker 2: Dickerson and Lange. I mean, if there is anybody that
- 26:32Speaker 2: can turn former first round pick Mackay Beckton into the
- 26:35Speaker 2: fearsome monstrosity that he was projected, he's huge. Yes, yes,
- 26:40Speaker 2: it is Jeff Stalin. And then I look, I try
- 26:44Speaker 2: to mention it at least once a week, just out
- 26:45Speaker 2: of sheer sadness. But then I think about guys like
- 26:47Speaker 2: you know, Jamo Brown who couldn't hack it. Why because
- 26:51Speaker 2: they didn't commit Stotland University. I look at guys like
- 26:54Speaker 2: Hollypoolevadivtai who went to Stotland University, signed huge deals and
- 26:59Speaker 2: then as they walked away any from Stalin University struggle.
- 27:02Speaker 2: There is no doubt in my mind that the most
- 27:04Speaker 2: valuable person in the entire Novacare complex is Jeff Stoutlin.
