- 0:00Hey guys, welcome back to fostering faith and
- 0:03we are gonna be in this Sequence of episodes
- 0:07about the fruit of the spirit. And so last week
- 0:10we dived into Love and this week we are going
- 0:13to to be diving in to joy And so I wanted to
- 0:17do this episode today because I feel like I was
- 0:20lacking joy Because it was cold and rainy and
- 0:22I did not get to go outside and look at the stars
- 0:26it was raining and cold and I really had just
- 0:30a hard day at work and just been going through
- 0:33a lot of things just internally and just working
- 0:37through a lot of things and I was just like man
- 0:40I just I you know like just the joy the joy of
- 0:43the Lord is and so all day today I would just
- 0:47like the joy of my Lord is my strength the joy
- 0:48of the Lord the joy of the Lord and you know
- 0:51just kind of going through different verses that
- 0:54had the word joy in it because I just felt ick.
- 0:58And so I just kind of want to join in with this.
- 1:02What is joy? And so biblical joy is a deep, cheerful,
- 1:09anchored presence of God rather than circumstances
- 1:15or fleeting emotions, unlike happiness, which
- 1:17often depends on events or outcomes. Biblical
- 1:20joy is described as an attitude or way of experiencing
- 1:23life rooted in faith and hope and certainly in
- 1:27God's love and promises. And then you have the
- 1:29scripture that distinguishes between biblical
- 1:31joy and worldly happiness by emphasizing its
- 1:35source, God, Himself, not materialistic blessings
- 1:40or favorable situations. Joy is considered through
- 1:44the Spirit in Galatians 5 and we have that in
- 1:4722 through 23. produced as believers engage in
- 1:50God's presence and the beauty of Christ through
- 1:53faith. This means that true joy persists even
- 1:55in suffering, trials, or loss because it arises
- 2:01during the relationship with God. In the Old
- 2:06Testament, joy is often associated with encounters
- 2:08with God during festivals and worship, highlighting
- 2:11the communal celebration of worship. and then
- 2:15you have in the new testament joy is closely
- 2:17tied to the announcement and acceptance of the
- 2:19gospel in the believer's response to god's faithfulness
- 2:23even in the midst of hardship and persecution
- 2:25and so joy is a spiritual discipline a choice
- 2:28to focus on god's goodness and promise regardless
- 2:31of the presence of reality and it's sustained
- 2:35by the holy spirit who helps us deliver and believe
- 2:39and see god's glory in jesus's love by producing
- 2:43genuine joy, not from the outside, but from within.
- 2:49And joy celebrates redemption, hope for the future,
- 2:53and steady trust that God's love is permanent,
- 2:56even when pain is present. And the Bible teaches
- 2:59that Christians can always rejoice because the
- 3:04source of joy, Christ, never changes. And it
- 3:08is available at all times. And so biblical joy,
- 3:12flows from understanding and experiencing God's
- 3:15character, faithfulness, and salvation offered
- 3:18through Jesus Christ. It transcends both suffering
- 3:21and celebration, calling believers to remain
- 3:24cheerful, hopeful, and thankful regardless of
- 3:29their circumstances. And so we hope that you
- 3:31stay tuned into this episode as we are going
- 3:33to be walking through the fruits of the spirit
- 3:35And I just I like a series. I like knowing that
- 3:38i'm going to come back next week and look at
- 3:41um And know what i'm going to get into and so
- 3:44last week we talked about love and so we're going
- 3:45to be walking through the fruits of the spirit
- 3:48And if you are new to this channel, hi, my name
- 3:51is tracy. I will be your host today Welcome back
- 3:54to fostering faith and last week we kicked off
- 3:56a series of fruit of the spirit by talking about
- 4:00love. And listen, love had me just fired up.
- 4:04And so today we're going to be diving into the
- 4:07second fruit, which is joy. And so I'm not talking
- 4:09about the kind of Instagram joy that depends
- 4:12on good lighting and a perfect coffee foam. I
- 4:15mean, a deep, unshakable, Holy Spirit produced
- 4:18joy that survives the Monday that I just had.
- 4:22There were medical reports that we've been getting,
- 4:24the high school drama and the middle school drama.
- 4:28The kind of joy that shows up even when life
- 4:31doesn't. And let's be honest, happiness is easy.
- 4:36Joy is holy. Happiness fades when moments end.
- 4:41Joy sticks around when everything falls apart.
- 4:44And we have Galatians 5, 22 -23 that says, But
- 4:48the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
- 4:51patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
- 4:54and self -control. Did you get that? Joy isn't
- 4:58something that you chase. It's something the
- 5:01spirit produces in you. And we have hara, which
- 5:06comes from haris, meaning grace in Greek. And
- 5:11I may have butchered that, but I tried really
- 5:13hard on that. So literally joy is grace recognized.
- 5:17It's the happiness. And it happens whenever your
- 5:20heart suddenly realizes, wow, God's been good
- 5:24to me even when life hasn't. that's why Paul
- 5:28says in Philippians 4 for rejoice in the Lord
- 5:32always again, I say rejoice and That verse will
- 5:37always be forever ingrained in my brain. I have
- 5:40a wonderful Older saint and she is just on fire
- 5:45for Christ and his inner in her mid 80s and she
- 5:49is just a wonderful person you cannot be around
- 5:52this woman and Not just smile and just she exudes
- 5:57Jesus I mean, it's just wonderful and she was
- 6:01talking to me one day and she clapped her hands
- 6:04and just said, you know rejoice in the Lord always
- 6:06rejoice I get I say again rejoice and I mean
- 6:09she just has Such joy. I mean is she just a wonderful
- 6:14wonderful human But we also have to think of
- 6:18where you know, Paul wrote that He wrote that
- 6:21in prison Not on a beach vacation, not after
- 6:25he got a million followers, not after he made
- 6:29reels that, you know, made him famous. Joy doesn't
- 6:33need a good view. Joy doesn't need a follower.
- 6:38It needs a good God. And so, joy begins with
- 6:42God. And here's what I love about Zephaniah 3,
- 6:4617. It says, the Lord your God is in your midst,
- 6:49a mighty one who saves. He will rejoice over
- 6:53you with gladness. He is quite you by His love.
- 6:58And He will exalt you over with a loud singing.
- 7:04Did you hear that? God rejoices. That means joy
- 7:09didn't start with us. It started with Him. Joy
- 7:13is part of God's nature. He's not moody. We're
- 7:18emotionally unpredictable. He delights in his
- 7:21creation. In theologian, Herman Beneke said,
- 7:27the joy of the Lord is self -delight of his perfect
- 7:31being and his works. In other words, God's joy
- 7:35flows from who he is. And when the Holy Spirit
- 7:40lives in us, his joy starts to flow through us.
- 7:44Joy isn't a personality. It's participation in
- 7:48the divine life. That's why Nehemiah could say
- 7:51the joy of the Lord is my strength It's not our
- 7:56joy that keeps us it says and the joy of Jesus
- 8:02and so let's talk about Jesus because is anyone
- 8:06model joy it is him and so John 15 11 says Jesus
- 8:11said these things I have spoken to you so that
- 8:14my joy may be in you and that your joy is Maybe
- 8:20made full Notice the order he said his joy in
- 8:27us Makes ours full that means joy Doesn't come
- 8:33from our circumstances It comes from connection
- 8:37and in context John 15 is About the vine and
- 8:41the branches and Jesus says abide in me and in
- 8:45Greek those words Mino means to remain, to stay,
- 8:51to dwell. So joy is the natural result of staying
- 8:55connected in Christ. And so John 15, four through
- 9:00five says, remain in me and I will remain in
- 9:04you for I am the branch that cannot produce fruit
- 9:07if it is not severed from the vine and you cannot
- 9:10be fruitful unless you remain in me. Five, yes.
- 9:15I am the vine, and you are the branches. Those
- 9:17who remain in me will produce much fruit. Apart
- 9:20from me, you can do nothing. And if you skip
- 9:23down to nine, I have loved you even as the Father
- 9:26has loved me. Remain in my love." And so, whenever
- 9:33you're disconnected from the vine, you don't
- 9:36just lose energy. You lose your joy. And that's
- 9:40why some people feel spiritually burned out.
- 9:42They're doing ministry disconnected from intimacy.
- 9:47And I mean, we are often, we should have people
- 9:51in our lives to be like, hey, are you connected
- 9:55to the vine? When was the last time that you
- 9:57sat with Jesus? Sitting on his feet, sitting
- 10:00at the root and just getting filled up. Hebrews
- 10:0412 .2 says, for the joy set before him, he endured
- 10:08the cross. Pause right there. The verse changes
- 10:14everything. Joy carried Jesus through the cross.
- 10:20Not comfort. Not popularity. Joy. And so that
- 10:28Greek term there, because of the joy, means he
- 10:35saw beyond the suffering to the salvation it
- 10:38would bring. And that's why biblical joy always
- 10:40includes hope. It looks forward. So even whenever
- 10:44it hurts, remember, the same joy that carried
- 10:47Jesus through suffering is the joy the Spirit
- 10:51puts inside of you. And so the fruits. Joy is
- 10:56evident in life. And so Galatians 5 isn't about
- 10:59personality traits. It's about proof of life.
- 11:02The fruit of the Spirit is evidence that the
- 11:05Spirit is really in control. And Douglas Moo,
- 11:08a commentary on Galatians, says that the fruit
- 11:11is not something believers manufacture. It's
- 11:14something the fruit cultivates as we walk with
- 11:16him. So when Paul lists joy second, it's not
- 11:21random. Love expresses itself through joy. And
- 11:26you have Romans 14, 17. The back says up, for
- 11:29the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking,
- 11:33but righteousness and peace. and joy in the Holy
- 11:36Spirit. That means joy isn't optional. It's a
- 11:41kingdom marker. Its righteousness shows our standing,
- 11:44and the peace shows our stability. Then joy shows
- 11:47up in spiritual vitality. And here's the truth.
- 11:51The absence of joy doesn't mean the absence of
- 11:53salvation, but it usually means the absence of
- 11:57surrender. Because the Holy Spirit produces joy
- 12:01when He's free to rule. And so joy versus happiness.
- 12:07So let's clear it up. And so let's be real for
- 12:09a second. We live in a culture that confuses
- 12:11joy with happiness like they're twins and they're
- 12:14not. Happiness is external. It depends on what's
- 12:18happening while joy is internal. It depends on
- 12:23what's indwelling. Happiness says, I feel good
- 12:27because something's good. Joy says, I feel secure
- 12:31because God is good. Even if nothing else is
- 12:35Jesus never promised happiness He promised joy
- 12:40in John 16 22 it says you will have sorrow now
- 12:44But I will see you again and your hearts will
- 12:48rejoice and no one will take your joy from you
- 12:52Did you catch that Joy that cannot be taken You
- 12:58can use a job You can lose your friends Lose
- 13:02your plan, but you cannot lose the joy that's
- 13:06rooted in Christ unless you hand it over. And
- 13:11so what steals joy? Let's name some thieves because
- 13:15you can't protect what you can't identify. One.
- 13:19Comparison. And so looking sideways when you
- 13:24should be looking upward. Two. Thinking God needs
- 13:29your help running the universe. He doesn't. I've
- 13:33offered my advice, and he says, I got this. Let
- 13:36me take care of it. Three, complacency. Forgetting
- 13:42what God already did. Four, complaining. You
- 13:49can't praise and pout at the same time. Five,
- 13:56circumstances. allowing what's happening around
- 13:59you to define what's happening within you. Psalm
- 14:0351 12, restore to me the joy of our salvation.
- 14:09David didn't lose salvation. He lost joy. Why?
- 14:15Because sin always steals it. Joy can't coexist
- 14:21with rebellion. It dries up whenever we're resisting
- 14:24the Holy Spirit that it produces. And so what
- 14:29are we going to be doing in the time where we
- 14:32are in just lack of joy? What are we going to
- 14:36be doing in the times where we need God's help
- 14:40and we don't feel like he's there? And so what
- 14:43are we going to be doing whenever we are just
- 14:46sitting here idly and just thinking like everyone
- 14:49just stole my joy? It's just I don't have anything
- 14:52to do. I don't know what to do, you know, and
- 14:55it is Just so obvious that we are not connected
- 15:00with the vine. We're not sitting at his feet.
- 15:01We're not studying We don't have that relationship.
- 15:04We don't have anything because we're not connected
- 15:07to The vine and so whenever we are allowing ourselves
- 15:13to Not be connected how can we stay in the fruit
- 15:20of the spirit and so as we are gonna go into
- 15:24these next episodes as far as The next fruits
- 15:30of the spirit if these messages are encouraging
- 15:33you make sure that you write a comment make sure
- 15:35that you are allowing other people to Walk through
- 15:40this and maybe use it as a small group. Maybe
- 15:43use it as a Intro to a conversation, you know,
- 15:49let's dive into this as a community and so whenever
- 15:52we are allowing God to speak in our lives, making
- 15:57sure that we're sharing what God is working through
- 16:00us. And so let's just go back. And so the joy
- 16:04begins with God. And so you can't have joy without
- 16:08the owner of it. And then you have the joy of
- 16:10Jesus. And we can't forget the fruit of the spirit
- 16:13because joy is evident in that life. And we work
- 16:17through the joy versus happiness. And what steals
- 16:20our joy? Comparison. control, and circumstances.
- 16:28And then we have joy and suffering. Here's where
- 16:31joy gets tested. In James 1, 2 through 4, it
- 16:34says, consider it to all joy, my brothers and
- 16:38sisters, whenever you encounter various trials,
- 16:41knowing that the testing of your faith can produce
- 16:44endurance. The word consider means to choose
- 16:49to see it this way. Joy isn't pretending. Pain
- 16:53isn't real. It's choosing to see the purpose
- 16:56behind it. In Romans 5, 3 -5, it says that we
- 16:59exalt in tribulations because tribulations produce
- 17:03perseverance, character, and hope. Peter writes
- 17:07in 1 Peter 1, 6 -8, it says, greatly rejoice
- 17:11through now we suffer grief because the tested
- 17:16faith will result in praise when Jesus is revealed.
- 17:21The early church in Acts 5 -41 that says the
- 17:23apostles rejoiced when they were counted worthy
- 17:26to suffer for his name. That's not insanity.
- 17:30That's a spirit -born perspective. An eternal
- 17:36joy. Hope for the future. In Romans 8 -18, I
- 17:39consider that suffering in the present time are
- 17:42not worthy to be compared with the glory that
- 17:45will be revealed to us. Joy looks forward. It's
- 17:50eschatological, a fancy word, meaning to point
- 17:54to the end of a big finish. Revelation 21 .4
- 18:00says, there is no more tears mourning for pain.
- 18:05Every bit of joy you feel now is just a preview
- 18:08of eternity. And that's why we can sing through
- 18:12sorrow, because joy sees the finish line. And
- 18:17so how do we cultivate joy every day? One, stay
- 18:22grateful. Gratitude multiplies joy. Psalm 103
- 18:26says, bless the Lord, own my soul and forget
- 18:29none of his benefits. Write down what God has
- 18:32done and reread it whenever you forget. Two,
- 18:39stay connected. Joy is communal. Acts 2 .46 says
- 18:43that the believers ate together with glad and
- 18:46sincere hearts. Isolation kills joy. Fellowship
- 18:50feeds it. And we've talked about it time and
- 18:54time again, community is so important. Three,
- 18:58stay grounded. Let scripture root you. Jeremiah
- 19:0215, 16 says, your word becomes... Let me try
- 19:07that again. Jeremiah 15, 16 says, your words
- 19:11became... for me a joy and a delight in my heart.
- 19:17You have to stay rooted. You have to stay grounded
- 19:19in scripture. You have to write it on your heart
- 19:22because the enemy will seek, kill, and destroy
- 19:25you and he will twist that scripture. Please
- 19:28know that he knows that scripture probably better
- 19:30than you do. That's why it's so important just
- 19:32to sit with the word. Stay generous. Joy flows
- 19:38through open hands. 2nd Corinthians 9 -7 says,
- 19:41God loves a cheerful giver. The Greek word here,
- 19:46hilarious, where we get hilarious, giving should
- 19:50make you smile. Five, stay repentant. Joy returns
- 19:56fastest to the humble. Repentance isn't a lecture,
- 20:01it's a reset. Joy as a witness. And so Philippians
- 20:064, 4, 7 says, rejoice in the Lord always. Again,
- 20:10I say rejoice. Let your gentle spirit be known
- 20:13to all the people. The Lord is near. And like
- 20:17we talked about in the very beginning, where
- 20:19did Paul write that? In prison. Chains could
- 20:23not choke his joy because joy isn't chained to
- 20:26comfort. People notice whenever you still have
- 20:30peace when you shouldn't. Joy evangelizes without
- 20:36words. And maybe you're listening today and you're
- 20:40thinking Tracy this all sounds great, but I don't
- 20:42feel joy And that's okay fillings aren't fruit
- 20:48fruit grows with time and sunshine and Sometimes
- 20:52the seeds still are underground and God's watering
- 20:56them with tears with pain Psalms 35 says Weeping
- 21:05may last for a night But a shout of joy is coming
- 21:08in the morning. Morning always comes. The sun's
- 21:13gonna come up. And with his grace and mercy,
- 21:17we get to see that. So each morning this week,
- 21:21before you touch your phone, whisper this, God,
- 21:26thank you that your joy is my strength today.
- 21:29And watch how that resets your whole day. Gratitude
- 21:33invites joy. And joy fuels strength. And strength
- 21:37carries peace. And so love plants seeds. Joy
- 21:43is the bloom. And when the world gets darker,
- 21:47joy shines brighter. The world doesn't need more
- 21:51cheerful Christians pretending everything is
- 21:53fine. It needs joyful believers anchored in someone
- 21:57who actually is. So wherever you go this week,
- 22:01school, work, practice, hospital rooms, Carry
- 22:05joy like a perfume Leave a trace of it wherever
- 22:09you walk in Romans 15 13 says Now may the Lord
- 22:15of Hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing
- 22:18So that you will abound in hope by the power
- 22:22of the Holy Spirit And that's my prayer for you
- 22:27And so let's close in prayer dear Heavenly Father.
- 22:29Thank you so much for these gifts of joy not
- 22:32shallow not short -term but the kind that holds
- 22:35on steady when life gets shaky. Fill every listener
- 22:38today with joy of their salvation. Restore what
- 22:41has been stolen. Teach us to abide in you so
- 22:44we deeply know what joy feels like. And it becomes
- 22:49a natural response. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
- 22:54Well, we hope this message blessed you. Thank
- 22:56you so much for spending time with me today.
- 22:59Next week, we're going to be diving into peace,
- 23:01the calm that does not make sense because change
- 23:04is going to come. But that peace completely changes
- 23:08everything. And so until then, we hope you guys
- 23:11have an amazing week. We love you. Have a great
- 23:13week. Bye.
