- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. And it's Thursday, it's the 19th
- 0:16of June, and you have tapped on place so that we can continue
- 0:20this fascinating exposition of what it looks like to live out
- 0:25God's commandments. This speech that Moses gives
- 0:28God's people as they are literally standing on the banks
- 0:32of the Jordan River are back to crossover into the land that
- 0:36they have been promised. This land that they have been
- 0:38wandering around hoping and looking forward to this day for
- 0:4140 odd years. And as they're about to go over,
- 0:45we've just finished these last four days unpacking that first
- 0:49commandment. And now today, today we unpack
- 0:52the second commandment in its entirety.
- 0:55The second commandment being you shall not make for yourself an
- 0:59idol. Don't do it, people.
- 1:01Don't make idols. Don't worship them.
- 1:03If you do, it will not go well for you and your children.
- 1:07But if you worship me alone, says God, I will show steadfast
- 1:11love to the thousandth generation, to those who love me
- 1:15and keep my commandments. So the second commandment is
- 1:18clear. Let's see how Moses unpacks it
- 1:22for these people as they're about to enter a land, a land
- 1:25chock, a block full of all sorts of other worship of other gods
- 1:30in shrines and asheropols and Pagan temples.
- 1:34Let us read together Deuteronomy chapter 12.
- 1:46These are the decrees and regulations you must be careful
- 1:50to obey. When you live in the land that
- 1:52the Lord, the God of your ancestors is giving you, you
- 1:56must obey them as long as you live.
- 1:59When you drive out the nations that live there, you must
- 2:02destroy all the places where they worship their gods.
- 2:06High on the mountains, up on the hills, and under every green
- 2:10tree, breakdown their altars and smash their sacred pillars.
- 2:15Burn their ashra poles and cut down their carved idols.
- 2:20Completely erase the names of their gods.
- 2:23Do not worship the Lord your God in the way these Pagan peoples
- 2:28worship their gods. Rather, you must seek the Lord
- 2:32your God at the place of worship.
- 2:35He himself will choose from among all the tribes the place
- 2:39where His name will be honoured. There you will bring your burnt
- 2:43offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, your sacred offerings,
- 2:48your offerings to fulfil a vow, your voluntary offerings, and
- 2:52your offerings of the first born animals of your herds and
- 2:55flocks. There you and your families will
- 2:58feast in the presence of the Lord your God, and you will
- 3:02rejoice in all you have accomplished.
- 3:04Because the Lord your God has blessed you.
- 3:08Your pattern of worship will change.
- 3:11Today all of you are doing as you please because you have not
- 3:14yet arrived at the place of rest, the land the Lord your God
- 3:17is giving you as your special possession.
- 3:20But you will soon cross the Jordan River and live in the
- 3:23land the Lord your God is giving you.
- 3:26When he gives you rest from all your enemies and you're living
- 3:30safely in the land. You must bring everything I
- 3:33command you, your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your
- 3:36tithes, your sacred offerings and your offerings, to fulfil a
- 3:40vow to the designated place of worship, the place the Lord your
- 3:45God chooses for His name to be honoured.
- 3:48You must celebrate there in the presence of the Lord your God,
- 3:52with your sons and daughters and all your servants.
- 3:56And remember to include the Levites who live in your towns,
- 4:00for they will receive no allotment of land among you.
- 4:03Be careful not to sacrifice your burnt offerings just anywhere
- 4:06you like. You must do so only at the place
- 4:10the Lord will choose, within one of your tribal territories.
- 4:14There you must offer your burnt offerings and do everything I
- 4:18command you. But you may butcher your animals
- 4:21and eat their meat in any town, wherever you want.
- 4:25You may freely eat the animals with which the Lord your God
- 4:28blesses you. All of you, whether ceremonially
- 4:31clean or unclean, may eat that meat, just as you now eat
- 4:35gazelle and deer. But you must not consume the
- 4:39blood. You must pour it out on the
- 4:41ground like water. But you may not eat your
- 4:45offerings in your hometown, neither the tithe of your grain
- 4:48and new wine and olive oil, nor the first born of your flocks
- 4:52and herds, or any offering to fulfil a thou, nor your
- 4:56voluntary offerings, nor your sacred offerings.
- 4:59You must eat these in the presence of the Lord your God at
- 5:03the place He will choose. Eat them there with your
- 5:06children, your servants, and the Levites who live in your towns,
- 5:10celebrating in the presence of the Lord your God in all you do.
- 5:15And be very careful never to neglect the Levites as long as
- 5:18you live in your land. When the Lord your God expands
- 5:22your territory, as He has promised, and you have the urge
- 5:25to eat meat, you may freely eat meat wherever you want.
- 5:30It might happen that the designated place of worship, the
- 5:33place the Lord your God chooses for His name to be honoured, is
- 5:36a long way from your home. If so, you may butcher any of
- 5:40the cattle, sheep or goats the Lord has given you, and you may
- 5:43freely eat the meat in your hometown, as I've commanded you.
- 5:48Anyone rather ceremonially clean or unclean may eat that meat,
- 5:53just as you do now with gazelle and deer, but never consume the
- 5:57blood, for the blood is the life, and you must not consume
- 6:02the lifeblood with the meat. Instead, pour out the blood on
- 6:06the ground like water. Do not consume the blood so that
- 6:10all may go well with you and your children after you, because
- 6:14you will be doing what pleases the Lord.
- 6:17Take your sacred gifts and your offerings given to fulfil a vow
- 6:22to the place the Lord chooses. You must offer the meat and
- 6:25blood of your burnt offerings on the altar of the Lord your God.
- 6:30The blood of your other sacrifices must be poured out on
- 6:33the altar of the Lord your God, but you may eat the meat.
- 6:37Be careful to obey all My commands so that all will go
- 6:41well with you and your children after you, because you will be
- 6:45doing what is good and pleasing to the Lord your God.
- 6:49When the Lord your God goes ahead of you and destroys the
- 6:52nation's and you drive them out and live in their land.
- 6:56Do not fall into the trap of following their customs and
- 7:00worshipping their gods. Do not inquire about their gods,
- 7:04saying, how do these nations worship their gods?
- 7:08I want to follow their example. You must not worship the Lord
- 7:12your God the way the other nations worship their gods, for
- 7:15they perform for their gods every detestable act that the
- 7:19Lord hates. They even burn their sons and
- 7:22daughters as sacrifices to their gods.
- 7:25So be careful to obey all the commands I give you.
- 7:29You must not add anything to them or subtract anything from
- 7:33them. Lord, you are a personal God.
- 7:47You are not a God who wants to be represented by idols or poles
- 7:52or images or any other thing. You want to speak and be
- 7:57directly with your people, directly with us through not
- 8:02these Levite priests, but through our High Priest, Jesus.
- 8:07My Lord, thank you for giving us Jesus and thank you that Jesus
- 8:11is the only one that we need to go through to find you, our
- 8:15loving, loving, saving Heavenly Father.
- 8:19Thank you for your great love for us and for the great
- 8:23intimacy that you planned from all those years ago.
- 8:28A way for an unholy people to be able to come close to you.
- 8:33Our Holy God. Thank you for this way that
- 8:36you've made in Jesus and thank you for your love that inspired
- 8:39it all. We just pray all of this in His
- 8:42name, Amen.
