- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, welcome to you Heavy once more. Today we're
- 0:02Speaker 1: here at not Best twenty twenty five and we have
- 0:04Speaker 1: a very special guest today, Luke Steveriod, probably the first
- 0:08Speaker 1: comedian that has graced the stage an best in this
- 0:11Speaker 1: area anyway.
- 0:11Speaker 2: MAT's so welcome.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Thanks for having me, man.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Yeah, well it's a comedian knock best.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Like I suppose you've got pants running around with masks on,
- 0:19Speaker 1: You've got ibrawls, got face paints, you got clowns to
- 0:22Speaker 1: pot their clowns.
- 0:23Speaker 2: You're not really out of place, say it?
- 0:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, thank you. Well I'm I don't have that
- 0:29Speaker 3: much makeup. Uh you don't need it, right, No, thank you?
- 0:32Speaker 4: Oh my goodness, gracious, I was a fishing for as
- 0:35Speaker 4: but I can't stop.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah, man, it's it's interesting.
- 0:38Speaker 4: I mean I'm theatrical too to an extent, you know,
- 0:41Speaker 4: just with the comedy. But yeah, I don't feel out
- 0:43Speaker 4: of place. It's also just fun just wearing band shirts
- 0:45Speaker 4: around dance. It's just kind of like, oh this sels
- 0:48Speaker 4: a little weird.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Quick, good, Yeah, we're good.
- 0:51Speaker 3: You get what I mean.
- 0:52Speaker 4: You're like, you're wearing like a band shirt and then
- 0:54Speaker 4: actual people and bands are next to you and you're like,
- 0:56Speaker 4: should I warnt something else?
- 0:57Speaker 3: What I what am I doing?
- 0:58Speaker 2: We're we're in heavy shirts.
- 0:59Speaker 1: We don't even know like heavy okay, so what's your
- 1:03Speaker 1: actual rollway bright?
- 1:04Speaker 2: Looking through the run sheet like it goes band band, band,
- 1:07Speaker 2: no break? So what what where are you?
- 1:09Speaker 4: I'm not You're not doing anything today. It's I'm doing
- 1:11Speaker 4: a bunch of side shows. Actual, not the actual not
- 1:15Speaker 4: that's it's side shows. It's the way it got lined up.
- 1:18Speaker 4: A couple of different production companies got involved. Uh, and
- 1:21Speaker 4: then this has kind of just been tied together and then.
- 1:23Speaker 3: So it's under the umbrel.
- 1:24Speaker 4: So it's side shows stuff. But I don't tell anyone
- 1:26Speaker 4: that because it makes me sound a little less cool.
- 1:29Speaker 4: But also if I was doing a spot, that's that's
- 1:31Speaker 4: a hard like I don't know. I think it would
- 1:33Speaker 4: be cool for the cloud, but the actual job of
- 1:36Speaker 4: doing that, that's so many people like the idea of
- 1:43Speaker 4: following actual music to then talk about the music you
- 1:47Speaker 4: just saw.
- 1:48Speaker 3: I'm I would not do. I would eat my own asps.
- 1:50Speaker 1: So if you had to go after one of these
- 1:52Speaker 1: bands on the bal today, which one would you choose?
- 1:54Speaker 4: As early in the And this is nothing against any
- 1:56Speaker 4: of the bands, but like as early in the lineup
- 1:58Speaker 4: as people or yeah, before they get fully like we've
- 2:02Speaker 4: been here for seven hours, and now some guy's gonna
- 2:04Speaker 4: talk to me like why is why is it a
- 2:06Speaker 4: bass player in a band?
- 2:07Speaker 3: I don't know about speaking to me right now?
- 2:10Speaker 1: Very good?
- 2:11Speaker 4: So you're in a band, yeah, A little bit not
- 2:13Speaker 4: not well, it's all local stuff. Happened Washington, stay. I'm
- 2:17Speaker 4: from the United States, uh and we just played a
- 2:21Speaker 4: handful of shows. It's not a huge market up there,
- 2:24Speaker 4: and I wasn't part particularly good at playing bass. Turns
- 2:27Speaker 4: out my hands are not as huge as you need
- 2:30Speaker 4: them to me. Uh So, yeah, it was just kind
- 2:32Speaker 4: of you know, some like garage bands. We did a
- 2:34Speaker 4: couple of shows and some bars, and then you know
- 2:36Speaker 4: band Drama and Evil.
- 2:38Speaker 5: It's a metal band.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it was like rocky metal. And then I was
- 2:40Speaker 3: in some more conventional metal bands.
- 2:42Speaker 5: So you're from Seattle, run Seattle area. So has that
- 2:46Speaker 5: scene over there moved on from fleme light shirts and
- 2:48Speaker 5: grunge music. Is there a metal scene there?
- 2:51Speaker 4: There's a bit, it's not nearly as prevalent as I
- 2:54Speaker 4: would like. That's kind of why I left Washington last year,
- 2:59Speaker 4: uh and uh, and it's mostly well, it's you know,
- 3:03Speaker 4: I there's only someone you can do in any market.
- 3:06Speaker 4: At a certain point you kind of get topped out.
- 3:07Speaker 4: And I don't I don't want to speak ill of
- 3:09Speaker 4: the music scene there. It's just there's not as much.
- 3:12Speaker 4: We have Amazon, we have Microsoft, we have all these things.
- 3:14Speaker 4: A joke I do like to say when I'm in Seattle,
- 3:16Speaker 4: when they're being a little bit up tight, and it's like,
- 3:18Speaker 4: you guys can afford to laugh. You're literally gentrifying me
- 3:21Speaker 4: out of my home state. So I don't think the
- 3:25Speaker 4: music scene is as strong as it has been in
- 3:27Speaker 4: the past. And it's mostly just because they're being There's
- 3:30Speaker 4: a lot of tech people and you need you need
- 3:32Speaker 4: blue collar folk to like just make the thing, and
- 3:35Speaker 4: you need cool spaces that are affordable enough for someone
- 3:39Speaker 4: on the come up to be able to.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Perform and figure it out.
- 3:41Speaker 4: So like, growing up, a lot of the metal music
- 3:43Speaker 4: that I saw is just whoever had enough of a
- 3:46Speaker 4: following and you know, had enough push to be able
- 3:49Speaker 4: to come out to that far side of the country.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Yep.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Yeah, So like, and I live on the East Coast
- 3:55Speaker 4: now and I'm like, oh, it's everywhere now, Like I
- 3:57Speaker 4: just walk around and just band teachers everywhere.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I was like, oh, I would have much more of
- 4:00Speaker 3: home out here.
- 4:02Speaker 2: I got to say, very diplomatic for a controversial comedian?
- 4:04Speaker 3: Am I controversial?
- 4:05Speaker 1: Well, you're a comedian that likes heavy middle of course
- 4:08Speaker 1: the controversial anyone who likes heavy metals controversial?
- 4:10Speaker 3: You think?
- 4:10Speaker 4: So?
- 4:11Speaker 3: Okay, I don't. I don't perceive it as that.
- 4:13Speaker 1: As that in Australia where we're growing, growing minority, but
- 4:17Speaker 1: in Australia we're still the pasta child?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Can we say?
- 4:22Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Pasta probably explanation with a decent haircut.
- 4:27Speaker 3: What's your hair cut? Okay?
- 4:31Speaker 5: So how did being a metal comedian come about? Is
- 4:35Speaker 5: it just that you ended up the line that way
- 4:37Speaker 5: because you wear heavy metal shirts on stage? Did some
- 4:39Speaker 5: of your jokes go that?
- 4:40Speaker 1: Well?
- 4:41Speaker 4: Well, and what's the same way jokes are figured out
- 4:44Speaker 4: is that you have a thing that you like and
- 4:46Speaker 4: you say it in front of a crowd, see how
- 4:48Speaker 4: they react, and then calibrated according like going all right,
- 4:53Speaker 4: did this work? What pieces are here? And like what
- 4:55Speaker 4: does my brain want to add to it? Why I've
- 4:57Speaker 4: been doing that for years and years? And then I've
- 4:59Speaker 4: tried to talk about metal music consistently, like fairly every
- 5:02Speaker 4: now and then I would have a new joker. I'm like,
- 5:03Speaker 4: does this work? But the audiences in Washington, it's like
- 5:07Speaker 4: metal heads are a much smaller minority out there as
- 5:10Speaker 4: opposed to out here, and so it's just like you
- 5:13Speaker 4: got to you gotta adjust to the audience that you have.
- 5:16Speaker 3: So I would just kind of abstain from it.
- 5:18Speaker 4: And then I just maybe two and a half years ago,
- 5:20Speaker 4: I had a couple of bits that started work in
- 5:23Speaker 4: front of audiences of non metal heads, and it's really
- 5:26Speaker 4: just kind of the it's the connective tissue that opened
- 5:28Speaker 4: the door for me to just kind of discuss the
- 5:30Speaker 4: whole subject and able to actually dive into like the
- 5:33Speaker 4: love I have for a genre of music. And then
- 5:36Speaker 4: I recorded those you know, made I figured out Buddy
- 5:40Speaker 4: showed me how to like, you know, make the video
- 5:41Speaker 4: look good, make it the audio sound better, because it
- 5:43Speaker 4: is really important for not every every clip you see,
- 5:46Speaker 4: but if you can make it sound as much like
- 5:48Speaker 4: it feels on stage, where like you record the audience
- 5:51Speaker 4: right there instead of from like the back of the
- 5:52Speaker 4: room where everyone you can always.
- 5:54Speaker 3: See, like because people laugh at you on stage? You
- 5:56Speaker 3: can get that sound. It just feels like a good
- 5:58Speaker 3: hitch to the chest.
- 5:59Speaker 4: And then I put of those online and then just
- 6:01Speaker 4: metal head shared like crazy because they're they're hungry for representation.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And and then that no one talks about. Not I
- 6:07Speaker 3: wouldn't say no.
- 6:08Speaker 4: But not many people talk about having metal music in
- 6:10Speaker 4: stand up comedy. There's like a lot of sketches and
- 6:13Speaker 4: stuff like that, but it's just conventional.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So how does it?
- 6:16Speaker 5: How does it land?
- 6:17Speaker 4: Like?
- 6:17Speaker 5: Now you've obviously worked your craft on a bit more,
- 6:20Speaker 5: gotta where it needs to be. How does it land
- 6:22Speaker 5: with non metal audiences?
- 6:24Speaker 1: Now?
- 6:24Speaker 5: Have you kind of figured out how to blend that
- 6:26Speaker 5: to make that work?
- 6:27Speaker 3: I usually just Friney Spear.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Just gotta talk about Britney Spears and you win him over.
- 6:34Speaker 3: I don't think she says.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Talk about non metal audiences, how to win them over by.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Making a celebrity reference, telling more about Monica Lewinsky.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I can tell you a bit more about Britney Spears.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Yeah that's not.
- 6:52Speaker 4: She's the bass creat Okay, anyways, well we go there.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Have you got some Britney jokes? I don't know.
- 6:59Speaker 4: I tend to only write things right, jokes about things
- 7:02Speaker 4: I like, if I can help now that I dislike her,
- 7:05Speaker 4: all right, you're derailing me.
- 7:06Speaker 3: I uh well, you were.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Saying, now that I know, uh, non metal audiences, I
- 7:11Speaker 4: usually I switch gears because that's also you kind of
- 7:14Speaker 4: have to call an audible and go all right, this
- 7:16Speaker 4: is not because I've done that before where I'm like, hey,
- 7:18Speaker 4: I have this chunk that i want to work on
- 7:20Speaker 4: that's about mospitz or it's about vocalists or whatever, and
- 7:23Speaker 4: as I'm doing and I'm like, this isn't the audience.
- 7:26Speaker 3: It's not. And also, ultimately, my job is to make
- 7:28Speaker 3: the group of.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Humans that are in that room at that moment in
- 7:31Speaker 4: time laugh as much as possible, give them their money's worth,
- 7:35Speaker 4: and I can.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I can do the jokes I want to say later.
- 7:38Speaker 4: I can do that on shows in Australia where the
- 7:41Speaker 4: people come out specifically to see me because of their
- 7:44Speaker 4: love of metal music, and saying, up, comedy should just say.
- 7:46Speaker 1: You give you a halfway through a joy like it's
- 7:47Speaker 1: signed to talk about metal and you can see that
- 7:49Speaker 1: it's not kind of over.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Well, have you quick enough?
- 7:51Speaker 1: You got the ability just to switch and change up
- 7:53Speaker 1: to what you were going to say and enjoy someone
- 7:54Speaker 1: else in there.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been I got diagnosed with the add just
- 8:00Speaker 4: a little bit ago. But it has been kind of
- 8:01Speaker 4: like a part of the the the routines for a
- 8:05Speaker 4: while where it's like I do derail myself often, so
- 8:08Speaker 4: I just kind of built a skill set around that.
- 8:11Speaker 4: I did it a lot last night the show I
- 8:12Speaker 4: did in Brisbane.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Uh find in Brisbane. Otherwise it would have been that, Yeah,
- 8:17Speaker 1: it was crazy, fantastic.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Space really and they're all the staff were fantastic, the
- 8:22Speaker 4: audience with audience was fantastic. But I'm still like kind
- 8:24Speaker 4: of jet like and haven't like fully reset my brain,
- 8:27Speaker 4: and so it was a lot of a lot of derailing.
- 8:29Speaker 4: But it's also like that's I see it as like
- 8:32Speaker 4: kind of like a froggy metal song where it's just
- 8:34Speaker 4: like there's a key change, there's a time signal to change,
- 8:36Speaker 4: but you just kind of still flows in its own way.
- 8:39Speaker 4: But yeah, I do bail on bits, you know, there's
- 8:42Speaker 4: just breaking Like, yeah, it doesn't have the exact flow
- 8:47Speaker 4: that I would like. It's not like ideal, But it's
- 8:49Speaker 4: also like that it's just this I'm just talking tonight,
- 8:52Speaker 4: This all is to the ether anyways. It's like, I'm
- 8:54Speaker 4: not it might be a recorded thing, but it's recorded
- 8:56Speaker 4: for the sake of clips. It's not recorded to be
- 8:58Speaker 4: like this is my special that everyone's gonna walk going like, yeah,
- 9:00Speaker 4: this is just to Night's version of these jokes.
- 9:04Speaker 3: So yeah it is.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it's no that that's it you did on religion
- 9:08Speaker 1: and heavy metal religions and easy target no matter who
- 9:10Speaker 1: you are, But you write some valid points in that
- 9:13Speaker 1: might like were they did you have to research you
- 9:14Speaker 1: come up with that sort of stuff?
- 9:15Speaker 2: Order Is that something you've.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Always thought research, appreciate year every Sunday for years.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Now?
- 9:25Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 9:26Speaker 3: Man, that's just kind of passive knowledge and uh, genuine
- 9:29Speaker 3: disdain and rage. Uh was that the in the Jesus Jesus?
- 9:37Speaker 4: And also like reshared that clip a couple of times,
- 9:40Speaker 4: And because I'm not actively in the comments like renouncing
- 9:43Speaker 4: the Holy Spirit, like the Christians have really run with it,
- 9:45Speaker 4: and I'm.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Like, whatever you thought about a shirt with a fist
- 9:48Speaker 1: and Jesus together, like fist and Jesus, Okay, maybe not,
- 9:53Speaker 1: I don't want to figuratively.
- 9:54Speaker 2: I'm just so just putting two words together.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yeah, no, no, you want me to fis someone say
- 9:59Speaker 3: I get it after that, Well, it might be his. Actually,
- 10:05Speaker 3: I don't know when Jesus is into I know he
- 10:07Speaker 3: liked it through the hands. I don't know if you
- 10:08Speaker 3: liked it that. I have thought about that.
- 10:11Speaker 4: But I also even there's a new part of the
- 10:14Speaker 4: joke that I had last night, because it's I've been
- 10:16Speaker 4: talking about like in them off bit and yelling hammer
- 10:18Speaker 4: fits for Jesus, and like religious people are like, that's
- 10:21Speaker 4: so yeah, praises be, brother, praises be, and I'm like, no.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Like I'm I'm glad you like it, but that's not
- 10:27Speaker 2: like my the hammer fists.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I'm not giving you more fuel to justify
- 10:34Speaker 4: your delusions.
- 10:35Speaker 3: That's so rude.
- 10:35Speaker 4: But how I feel, I know the hammer fists for
- 10:38Speaker 4: Jesus is literally what the Roman soldiers did as they
- 10:41Speaker 4: fulfilled the prophecy stuff.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, like the metal voice that you put
- 10:46Speaker 1: on the end that you've sign a couple of lines through,
- 10:48Speaker 1: he should be.
- 10:49Speaker 3: A same, yeah, except for I can only do it
- 10:51Speaker 3: for a couple of lines.
- 10:52Speaker 4: I should take vocal lessons, truly, because that is all
- 10:55Speaker 4: It's just my happenstance.
- 10:56Speaker 3: And I've had plenty of shows where afterwards I'm like,
- 10:59Speaker 3: it was more than I should have.
- 11:01Speaker 2: But I do.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I love hearing that, Like that's a huge compliment because
- 11:05Speaker 3: it is.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I We've all I'm assuming everyone like you played guitar,
- 11:09Speaker 4: you play bass, you played drums or whatever, but all
- 11:11Speaker 4: of us kind of want to be a vocalist a
- 11:13Speaker 4: little bit and to be able to have like a
- 11:15Speaker 4: couple of moments here and there when I yelled, Someone's
- 11:16Speaker 4: like that was pretty good.
- 11:17Speaker 3: You should do more. I'm like, I'm not going to
- 11:18Speaker 3: do the thing.
- 11:19Speaker 2: That's the problem.
- 11:20Speaker 5: You do one on two backups in a band them,
- 11:22Speaker 5: Oh you should sing it?
- 11:23Speaker 3: Like have we got me for a whole song?
- 11:25Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't do karaoke. I don't. It's like, man,
- 11:28Speaker 3: I'm I'll just do a couple yells in a bit.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Let's talk about your typst in music. What's your favorite
- 11:33Speaker 5: corne dum when you're brought up probably before I'm saying,
- 11:35Speaker 5: you're wearing like Masdon shirt. Yeah, what do you get
- 11:38Speaker 5: into what you say?
- 11:40Speaker 4: I do think, Uh, the genre that I find myself
- 11:44Speaker 4: gravitated towards the most is probably metal door not exclusively.
- 11:47Speaker 3: But it is it. It is kind of the church
- 11:49Speaker 3: in me. I do like some things on it.
- 11:50Speaker 4: I like, I like, I think I like a like
- 11:53Speaker 4: a seventy thirty split where it's just like seventy percent
- 11:56Speaker 4: just like yelling, screaming, and then thirty percent.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Cleans in that becau doesn't we have to be?
- 12:01Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 12:01Speaker 4: I like that breakup because if it is like just
- 12:03Speaker 4: a full album of it, just like Last Beats the
- 12:05Speaker 4: whole time, like it.
- 12:06Speaker 3: Could be good.
- 12:07Speaker 4: But I like the breaks because it makes the crescendos
- 12:10Speaker 4: of chaos like stick out a little bit more.
- 12:14Speaker 3: That sounded love me some alliteration. It makes me sound
- 12:17Speaker 3: so much smarter than I am. What your.
- 12:22Speaker 4: I don't really have one at the moment. That's kind
- 12:24Speaker 4: of my go to answer. It's a very like political answer,
- 12:29Speaker 4: diplomatic politics. Politics are right now, So that's not I've
- 12:34Speaker 4: really been enjoying Killer be Killed?
- 12:36Speaker 3: Could you?
- 12:36Speaker 4: Like? Uh? Well, I only found out, Like I only
- 12:38Speaker 4: found him like a couple of months ago, and I
- 12:40Speaker 4: felt so stupid because I've been around for so long.
- 12:42Speaker 4: But like, yeah, that's been scratching the itch because it's
- 12:43Speaker 4: also uh dudes from acid on and uh Dillinger and
- 12:47Speaker 4: a bunch of bunch of bands that so that's.
- 12:49Speaker 3: That's been scratching the itch and Intervals I write. I
- 12:52Speaker 3: met Aaron and all the other dudes from Intervals a
- 12:55Speaker 3: while ago.
- 12:55Speaker 4: They were very nice and I I love also like
- 12:58Speaker 4: this instrumental metal movie music because it's so much easier
- 13:01Speaker 4: to write when there's no vocalist to distract me from.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Because I'm like, no, no, I gotta think my thought.
- 13:07Speaker 2: But we're gonna have to wand this up to me
- 13:08Speaker 2: because we're run late. But we have got some sideshows
- 13:11Speaker 2: with yours to promote.
- 13:12Speaker 1: You've got Melbourne on Wednesday much at Fifth and Sydney
- 13:15Speaker 1: on Friday the seventh March, yep, So anyone watching this
- 13:18Speaker 1: will have a published before then.
- 13:19Speaker 2: So I convinced them to come one of your shows.
- 13:21Speaker 4: If you don't like me up until this point, I
- 13:23Speaker 4: don't know what to tell you about. It'll be the
- 13:26Speaker 4: intentional version of this where I'm not just talking to
- 13:29Speaker 4: the moment. I'm gonna tell the jokes that I know
- 13:30Speaker 4: aready work and you can look at my name and
- 13:33Speaker 4: sign me. And also the shows are almost sold out,
- 13:35Speaker 4: so I don't need you.
- 13:38Speaker 1: What are you saying?
- 13:41Speaker 3: Very much?
- 13:41Speaker 1: Did you
