- 0:05Welcome to the Rocker Skating Podcast News of the Week.
- 0:08It is the week of March 9th to March 15th that we are a week
- 0:15away from the World Figure Skating Championships, which
- 0:18also means that we have gotten a lot of withdrawals and I'm going
- 0:22to talk about all of those here. Start off with actually all of
- 0:28the ones that we knew were not going to be around because they
- 0:33were not even on the original list of entries and that is
- 0:40Mikhail Scheidoroff, Charlene Guillard, Marco Fabri, Rebecca
- 0:44Gilardi, Filippo and Rusini Wenjing, Sway Song Han, Dianna
- 0:49Stellato, and Maxime Duchamp. All of those were not on the
- 0:55original list of entrants. And so we knew that one, that
- 1:00they had made their decision quite a while before the, the,
- 1:07the list actually came up. But two, that for a lot of them
- 1:12that was the end of their season and who knows what's going to
- 1:15happen with them. We will be starting to hear
- 1:19about retirements and, or or not and, or but retirements or
- 1:25continuations on to the next season probably within the next
- 1:28month. So and we've already heard about
- 1:32some of those. So Shyderov, Guillard, Fabri,
- 1:36Gilardi, Ambrosini, Suehan still out to shop.
- 1:40They, they were not on the original list.
- 1:42Now the list then came out and a lot of people thought, wow,
- 1:47interesting. So many of these skaters are
- 1:49going as we know from both just regular worlds and also post
- 1:55Olympic worlds, there are always withdrawals.
- 1:59And for post Olympic Worlds, there are generally a lot more
- 2:03withdrawals than there are in a normal season.
- 2:08And so over the past few weeks as we have gone through the
- 2:15couple of weeks of skaters either reflecting on their
- 2:19current season and seeing what's been going on or just making the
- 2:24decision to go or not go, we have seen a number of
- 2:28withdrawals. So starting with Luna Hendrix,
- 2:31who we knew at the Olympics was dealing with injury and you
- 2:37know, there, there was a question as to whether or not
- 2:39she would even be able to get to Milano to skate and she did.
- 2:42But she has withdrawn and Yada Hovine will take her place
- 2:47there. Then we had Rikumira
- 2:49Ryuchikihara, who we were very certain at the Olympics that
- 2:54they were not going to go to worlds and so they withdrew.
- 3:00Japan does not have a second or third pair to send to the World
- 3:05Championships. Not going to come, Muruguchi.
- 3:06They are already going. And so Japan will be left with
- 3:10one pair for the World Championships.
- 3:14And the implications of that is that they need to finish in the
- 3:18top 10 in order for Japan to keep their two spots for next
- 3:23season for worlds. And then we had a few other ones
- 3:26that were in some ways expected. I mean, most of the Italian team
- 3:32actually ended up from the Olympics, ended up withdrawing,
- 3:37right? So we talked about Ginyard Fabri
- 3:40and Gilardi Ambrosini having not been on the original list to
- 3:46begin with. Sarakanti Nicomachi also decided
- 3:50that they were not going to compete at worlds.
- 3:53They, as we know, Sarah Conti had been dealing with an injury
- 3:59with her knee and it was, you know, touch and go for her to
- 4:03get to the Olympics and, and she was able to a lot of rehab and,
- 4:07you know, a knee brace and all of that sort of stuff.
- 4:10And I'm sure the three weeks of pretty intense, you know,
- 4:16practices and so forth took a toll.
- 4:18And so they've they've decided to withdraw.
- 4:22No substitutes for them. And so neither of the Italian
- 4:26pairs who were in Milano are going to the World Championships
- 4:31in Prague. They they are then left with one
- 4:35pair, Caldar and Maglio, who will again, kind of like Nago
- 4:42Comoriguchi, will need to finish in the top 10 in order for them
- 4:46to keep the two spots for Italian pairs.
- 4:50Then we had our third Olympic champion withdrawal, Alyssa Liu,
- 4:55which in some ways it was a surprise, in other ways it
- 4:59wasn't a surprise. It was a surprise because she
- 5:02really did want to go to Worlds. She had told me, she had told
- 5:07her team, she had told a lot of media that she was excited to go
- 5:11to Worlds and she really certainly wanted to.
- 5:15But over the past few weeks, there have been a lot of
- 5:19developments in her fame and opportunities in the US.
- 5:25And so it's it, it would be, it'd be tough to turn all of
- 5:32those. A lot of these are, you know,
- 5:34once in a lifetime opportunities that you get as an Olympic
- 5:37champion in the US. And so, you know, we've seen her
- 5:43take the the withdrawal and, you know, she was just at an Oscars
- 5:48party yesterday. She's been at Paris Fashion
- 5:51Week, She's been all over the place and not at the rink all
- 5:54that much. So probably smart for her to not
- 5:58go to the World Championships, Championships.
- 6:01She will be replaced by Sarah Everhart and Sarah Everhart, if
- 6:06you remember, is the second alternate for the the US women.
- 6:12Brady Tennell was the first alternate.
- 6:14She made it very clear on on Instagram that she opted to not
- 6:21take that spot. She actually, I think told the
- 6:26the that they told she, she told US figure skating that she would
- 6:33not take the the spot actually fairly early so that Sarah
- 6:38Everhart could start feeling prepared in case there was there
- 6:43would be a withdrawal. So, so that was what what
- 6:47happened with Alyssa Liu, then Madison, Chuck, Evan Bates, that
- 6:51this was actually less of a surprise.
- 6:54It was kind of more of a surprise that they remained on
- 6:56the list for so long. Caroline Green, Michael Parsons
- 7:00will be replacing them. And Chuck and Bates also have
- 7:05been on a media blitz over the past couple of weeks.
- 7:11They were also at the Oscars viewing parties and other
- 7:15parties that were going on yesterday.
- 7:18They were in New York over the past week doing all kinds of
- 7:21stuff. And so there have been a lot of
- 7:26those types of opportunities for these skaters and they are
- 7:29taking full advantage of it. The last few that we have seen
- 7:33over the past few days. Matteo Rizzo continues the slate
- 7:37of Italian skater withdrawals. He will be replaced by Gabrielle
- 7:43Frangipani. And then a couple of injury
- 7:47surgery. Things that happened, which was
- 7:51Sofia Val and Asaf Kosimov was a surprise withdrawal.
- 7:55And it was a surprise to to Asaf Kosimov that he had appendicitis
- 8:02and had to undergo emergency, an emergency appendectomy a couple
- 8:09of days ago. So he will they will not be at
- 8:11worlds. That means Smart and Deke will
- 8:14be the only Spanish team they will need to finish in the top
- 8:1710 for them to for Spain to keep the two spots.
- 8:22And lastly and most recently, Kimi Rippon also out.
- 8:27She's been dealing with injuries all season.
- 8:29She's decided to take the time to rest and so Livia Kaiser is
- 8:34the only Swiss woman to be at the World Championships.
- 8:37She will need to finish in the top 10 in order to get the
- 8:42second or just keep the second spot for the Swiss women for
- 8:46next season. So I was lying about that being
- 8:49the last one. There's one more withdrawal that
- 8:52just happened, which is Ellie Cam and Danny O'Shea having
- 8:57posted on their Instagram that they will be out of the World
- 9:00Championships because they're dealing with an injury and
- 9:03trying to rest up before the Stars on Ice show season starts.
- 9:07And so they will be out of the World Championships and
- 9:10replacing them will be Emily Chan and Spencer Howe, who are
- 9:15fresh off a really good performance at the Olympics.
- 9:18So that's your world's withdrawals for now.
- 9:22We'll see if there any more before the World Championships
- 9:24start next week. And that was your news of the
- 9:27week for the week of March 9th to March 15th.
