- 0:00Reggie, what was your favorite part of today's episode?
- 0:06Oh man, that's a tough question.
- 0:10You know, I think that favorite part of today's episode was hearing about Tim's potential of wearing a kiln to his neck.
- 0:20So Tim's fashion, basically, we all agree.
- 0:22Thank you.
- 0:23I will, what was your favorite part of this episode?
- 0:25I think Dylan's closet advice was great and something that I will actually use.
- 0:30Thank you.
- 0:31I liked how delusional I was and Tim called me out on it.
- 0:34Incredible.
- 0:35My favorite part was Dylan too.
- 0:37I asked her a question about improv and delusion and she answered the coolest way possible.
- 0:42Oh, Dylan's always the coolest way possible.
- 0:45My favorite part was learning that Tim's style is James Bond meets Indiana Jones.
- 0:52And I'm measuring everyone of his outfits, but I'm nervous.
- 0:57I reveal too much.
- 1:10Wow.
- 1:11That is a great clacker.
- 1:13Reggie.
- 1:14Reggie, when you bought that clacker, I really thought it was a failure because it was a hingable.
- 1:19No, it was a hingable piece of thought I failed.
- 1:23And then the first clacker, and I was like, Reggie, you need me to talk to him out.
- 1:27He just had to buy a clacker.
- 1:29I actually tried to get as close to the clacker that Mary gave as an example.
- 1:34So it's really married.
- 1:36Mary is the brilliant one.
- 1:38Makes the sound.
- 1:39I don't see it.
- 1:40That clacker is great.
- 1:41It's a great one.
- 1:42I don't think it'd pay $300 for it or whatever, like an official one would have caused.
- 1:46Like it was.
- 1:47Now they have digital ones.
- 1:48$650.
- 1:49I forgot to tell you.
- 1:52I do think that's a failure.
- 1:54It sounds like the early Star Wars movie.
- 1:57I'm really afraid to be on this head, but we need to return that clacker.
- 2:00So we started the clock.
- 2:01Okay.
- 2:02This is the real part class.
- 2:04Hey there.
- 2:05Welcome to age.
- 2:07I am your host, Reggie Tidwell.
- 2:09This is Dylan Garcia, Tim Strauss.
- 2:11Hello.
- 2:12Mary Green.
- 2:13And I am very happy to be back.
- 2:15I was on vacation last week.
- 2:16And we had a very lovely agey incident for me.
- 2:20Yeah.
- 2:21And you haven't listened yet, right?
- 2:22Well, I haven't.
- 2:23How was that?
- 2:24She was great, but she's no Reggie.
- 2:25Yeah.
- 2:26She was great.
- 2:27I was concerned that I might not have a seat when I come back.
- 2:29No, no, no.
- 2:30She was.
- 2:31She was.
- 2:32Okay.
- 2:33There was a moment where I was like, you know what?
- 2:35Maybe Reggie doesn't have to be in.
- 2:36I've retained every other week, so that's good.
- 2:40There's no truth in that, Jess.
- 2:41I was purely jelly.
- 2:42Oh, yeah.
- 2:43It was fun, but I think it's a little, it's always a little different introducing a new person
- 2:49into it, which is fresh and sort of exciting in some ways.
- 2:53It's great because she knows all of us.
- 2:55So I can imagine she felt right at home with just this context.
- 2:59She didn't say her, we asked her at the end what her favorite part of the episode was.
- 3:04And I forget, she probably phrased it much more eloquently than this.
- 3:07I can't remember.
- 3:08She was like, didn't you just say whatever the hell I wanted to say?
- 3:10Yeah.
- 3:11Yeah.
- 3:12It's not the ending.
- 3:13Not the jazz, just something.
- 3:14Yeah.
- 3:15This is a show, as you know, that we don't take ourselves too seriously.
- 3:19We say whatever the hell we want to say.
- 3:21And we just really hope that you guys resonate with the things that we are seeing.
- 3:26So that said, I want to get our topic going for the day.
- 3:29So let's pick...
- 3:30Why are we pulling it from trash can?
- 3:31We don't know.
- 3:32Yeah.
- 3:33It's a nice trash can, though.
- 3:34We debated a lot about what the appropriate trash can was.
- 3:37That sounds like a nice thing.
- 3:39I think it's going to be something weird.
- 3:41Or maybe it'd be something weird.
- 3:43It's your day.
- 3:44Oh, man.
- 3:45The topic chooses you.
- 3:47They're actually the same thing.
- 3:49My heart.
- 3:50We break, right?
- 3:51Yeah, we break.
- 3:52Oh, this will be a fun one.
- 3:54Alright, let's see.
- 3:55You guys don't get to see it first.
- 3:56Did you see it?
- 3:57You see it?
- 3:58I'm going to see it first.
- 3:59Oh, man.
- 4:00The topic chooses you.
- 4:01They're actually the same thing.
- 4:02My heart.
- 4:03My heart.
- 4:04My heart.
- 4:05My heart.
- 4:06My heart.
- 4:07My heart.
- 4:08My heart.
- 4:09My heart.
- 4:10My heart.
- 4:11My heart.
- 4:12My heart.
- 4:13From the back, I thought it said morph v.
- 4:16Yeah.
- 4:17I have no first impression of morph v.
- 4:20Yes.
- 4:21I was hoping for morph v.
- 4:24All life is improv.
- 4:25That's what came to my mind.
- 4:26Interesting.
- 4:27This is improv.
- 4:29This is exactly.
- 4:30No, this is age.
- 4:31Oh, this is age.
- 4:32Oh, that's right.
- 4:33Sorry.
- 4:34This is age.
- 4:35Don't get it twisted.
- 4:36This is age.
- 4:37Improv is another show.
- 4:38That's our spin-off series.
- 4:40This is going to be your show.
- 4:42You're the improv master.
- 4:44Oh, I know.
- 4:45I get it because I was right.
- 4:46I was sticking notes on that wall.
- 4:48Yeah.
- 4:49It was like 90% of them were married.
- 4:52Yeah.
- 4:53Well, I thought I like to think I was channeling the group.
- 4:55At the time.
- 4:56The second one.
- 4:57When we were concepting the show,
- 4:59it took us a while to get to the idea of like,
- 5:01what if we just talked about something random every time
- 5:03and keep it really fresh?
- 5:04And like, improv came up as one of the tools
- 5:07that maybe would help us keep it fresh
- 5:09or like help us develop like a troop mentality.
- 5:11We did just like a very superficial sort of like,
- 5:15hey, welcome to improv.
- 5:17Like, Tina Fey had a great talk,
- 5:19and I showed that one.
- 5:20We loved it.
- 5:21But it did end up with like, oh,
- 5:22I'm not going to say a million.
- 5:23A hundred at least sticking out spawn.
- 5:26There's like this elephant door in the old office.
- 5:29It was a lot of topics.
- 5:33But I think I did probably right.
- 5:35Half of them.
- 5:36So when I think improv,
- 5:39I actually get a little scared
- 5:42because like, there are people who are good at improv.
- 5:45And I find them very intimidating.
- 5:47And it's like to say like, you know improv.
- 5:51It could get like kind of out of hand, kind of quickly.
- 5:55And I don't have like formal training.
- 5:57I've maybe taken a course or two.
- 5:58And then we have a lot of great improv
- 6:01troops here in Asheville.
- 6:02And I've seen a handful of them.
- 6:04And they're so entertaining.
- 6:06I haven't been to one here.
- 6:07Oh, yeah, go.
- 6:08They.
- 6:09So I was on a show called the hometown show
- 6:13that our buddy, George A. Y.
- 6:16puts on.
- 6:17He puts on out at Asheville pizza.
- 6:20The one on Maryland.
- 6:21And they would basically have a guest on the show.
- 6:25And I was the guest on this particular show.
- 6:28And asked them questions about their upbringing
- 6:31and like who they are.
- 6:32I mean, it's usually people that are notable
- 6:34and asked about this.
- 6:35No.
- 6:36What's your upbringing?
- 6:37Well, I don't know.
- 6:38I was raised at a farm.
- 6:40I was raised.
- 6:42I came from another planet.
- 6:44And this old couple found me on their farm and raised me.
- 6:48Yes.
- 6:49Yes.
- 6:50Okay, Superman.
- 6:51Yeah.
- 6:52So no, basically what would happen is they would ask questions.
- 6:54And the improv troops would take turns acting out my answers.
- 6:58Which was amazing.
- 7:00It was the funniest thing.
- 7:02So they do a whole Q&A and they do it in blocks.
- 7:05So they'd ask like maybe five or seven questions.
- 7:08And then I go off stage.
- 7:10The host of the guest goes off stage.
- 7:12And the improv troops come on.
- 7:14And they just kind of, you know,
- 7:16wing it, taking turns, acting out the stuff that I just said.
- 7:19And it was just gold mine.
- 7:21It's brilliant.
- 7:22How do you recommend it?
- 7:23When you said you get scared about it,
- 7:25I feel the same way.
- 7:26You know, really in high school and theater.
- 7:28And they always, I don't know,
- 7:30this is probably the worst place to try out.
- 7:32Improvison, you're in high school and you're already
- 7:34really nervous and awkward.
- 7:35Well, everybody's kind of just a little bit mean in high school.
- 7:38A lot on purpose.
- 7:39And then they put you on the spot with something random
- 7:41that you have to come up with.
- 7:42And if you mess up,
- 7:43somebody's going to totally manage it.
- 7:44Right.
- 7:45And there was always someone really good.
- 7:46And then there was always someone that was like,
- 7:48and I, they've got, yeah.
- 7:50The people who were good at it, they're not,
- 7:53I mean, I'm sure there are people who like
- 7:55studied the form and like are very cerebral about it.
- 7:57But so rarely is it just that somebody's really,
- 7:59really smart.
- 8:00It's usually just that they're loose.
- 8:02Yeah.
- 8:03They're just like rolling with it.
- 8:04And with it.
- 8:05Yeah.
- 8:06And they're not trying so hard.
- 8:08Right.
- 8:09And we know nothing of this.
- 8:10Jeez, that's what I'm saying.
- 8:11It feels like that was more training for real life than all
- 8:14the other classes I was taking.
- 8:16I was just about to say that improv probably
- 8:18does set people up for success in life.
- 8:20Because you kind of have to be able to just, you know,
- 8:23switch on the dime and roll with whatever's been given to you.
- 8:27And I think improv is probably good training for that.
- 8:31Um, improv is cool.
- 8:33It's like, I feel like the 20s is like so improv, though.
- 8:40Well, that's true.
- 8:41Like you've got no like tools with which to navigate the world.
- 8:44Yeah.
- 8:45And we're just kind of like throwing life.
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:47It's like, who are you?
- 8:49Like, that's cool.
- 8:50Like, what if I was this?
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:52I really like, I do hone on to that because it's just like,
- 8:55you could do whatever you want.
- 8:57Yeah.
- 8:58You can be whoever you want.
- 8:59Yeah.
- 9:00This is you experiencing life independently
- 9:02for the first time.
- 9:03I also, yeah.
- 9:04No, like that.
- 9:05And then I also feel like once you get out of the 20s,
- 9:07everybody's like, all right, come on, get your shit together.
- 9:08Yeah.
- 9:09So like, I'm not with the improv.
- 9:10Yeah.
- 9:11It's like 20s is improv.
- 9:13Be done with it.
- 9:14But yeah, I like improv from what I can tell.
- 9:17It's really fun to sit and watch.
- 9:18Yeah.
- 9:19It's really fun to sit and watch.
- 9:20Yeah.
- 9:21Yeah.
- 9:22We used to do a thing.
- 9:23So years ago, I had a thing called actual game night,
- 9:26which became the sort of movement more of an era for us.
- 9:30Not to be confused with the movie night.
- 9:31Yeah.
- 9:32Don't tease me either.
- 9:33You told me about that.
- 9:34Probably night.
- 9:35Movie night.
- 9:36Movie club.
- 9:37Oh.
- 9:38And I told you you need to bring games back.
- 9:39And I told you that we should do something here
- 9:41where we could get enough people.
- 9:42I would be totally down with that.
- 9:43I'm not in love.
- 9:44But the cool thing about movie or game night
- 9:47was that we started dealing this sort of spin-off
- 9:50improv night just to try it out.
- 9:52No, you didn't.
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:54And we had a couple of people that were actually improv actors.
- 9:57And so they would help guide some of the things that we did.
- 10:02And oh my god.
- 10:03I have videos.
- 10:04I'll have to share them with you sometime.
- 10:06But it was by far one of the most fun things that I've ever done.
- 10:11And I was actually pretty good at it.
- 10:13Because I can bullshit.
- 10:14Oh.
- 10:15You brought me a day.
- 10:16It was like keep it flowing.
- 10:18Oh yeah.
- 10:19It was, I loved it.
- 10:20I was like, I could totally do this.
- 10:21You see.
- 10:22And you put it in a party sense.
- 10:23I get like a shot.
- 10:24Oh, it was just a raid vibes from this.
- 10:25Is it like one step away from charades?
- 10:27Uh, I mean.
- 10:28And it part happened a bit of a vibe.
- 10:29Like, Jonathan Ross was really good at it.
- 10:31He's another Asheville friend of ours.
- 10:33But I remember we were doing something together.
- 10:36And we had to pretend we were in this car.
- 10:38And we're like driving.
- 10:39And we're just talking about random stuff
- 10:42that's coming by on the road.
- 10:43And he's like, oh, look, go help.
- 10:45Maybe we need to go help this old guy over.
- 10:47There was bad.
- 10:48And we're like, fuck that guy, man.
- 10:49We don't need to know.
- 10:50We're just, it was just the most real raw fun, spontaneous stuff.
- 10:55And oh my god, we should definitely do it.
- 10:57Yeah.
- 10:58I, one of my favorite, like, life lessons that improv is taught me.
- 11:04And I actually worked in an agency where we started to integrate some of this.
- 11:08Is the idea of not negating something that somebody has said,
- 11:14which I am like a, I have a real strong sense of truth.
- 11:19And I have a real strong sense of justice.
- 11:21So sometimes it's in me to say, no, that's not correct.
- 11:25But especially in a creative setting, which we always are,
- 11:28being able to like find the nugget in what somebody else said,
- 11:32and like cling to that and build upon it.
- 11:35Instead of like throwing it away and being like,
- 11:37this is garbage, let's do my idea.
- 11:39Yeah, yeah.
- 11:40Has been like revelatory in my whole life.
- 11:42It's a different kind of freedom, right?
- 11:44Yeah.
- 11:45It's like forcing you to cut ties with who you want to be in that moment
- 11:49and being able to try something different.
- 11:51We're like prescribing what it ought to be.
- 11:53And the other thing is it forces you to like cling to your people.
- 11:57You know, like, I'm not floating out here by myself.
- 11:59Yeah.
- 12:00You are my tether.
- 12:01Yeah, yeah.
- 12:02And so I'm going to continue rolling.
- 12:04That's fine.
- 12:05I mean, it also is just a really good tool for like team building,
- 12:09like really learning how to work collaboratively with other people.
- 12:13But what if you're an ultravert?
- 12:15Oh, true.
- 12:16This has came up on that episode.
- 12:18True.
- 12:19You didn't watch the last episode.
- 12:20You didn't watch it.
- 12:21You didn't watch it.
- 12:22To learn an ultravert.
- 12:23At the beach with this beautiful family.
- 12:25That's right.
- 12:26I didn't want to listen to it in the car.
- 12:28I tried.
- 12:29Yeah.
- 12:30So we gave it the car.
- 12:31Whatever it is, it's like, we're like, we got better things to do.
- 12:33Yeah.
- 12:34I made Alex listen to one.
- 12:36And it's, it's like very painful to, you did this with your friends.
- 12:38And that's like painful to force somebody.
- 12:39Oh, you all are going to be forced to yeah.
- 12:40It's coming here.
- 12:41I don't know what the hell you're doing.
- 12:42But thanks for being a parlour.
- 12:51We discovered a new, well, Jake Springfield reposted on Instagram.
- 12:55This word.
- 12:56And I can't even remember what it is.
- 12:59I remember, all I remember is I related to it,
- 13:02and there's some ultraverse.
- 13:04Thank you, Will.
- 13:04Yes, so it's a, they don't,
- 13:07well, the last part of it that I related to
- 13:08is that they're, they don't identify with groups.
- 13:11Oh, you're not an ultraverse.
- 13:14Yes, because I've always,
- 13:15and Adrian felt this group,
- 13:16and you're there every month.
- 13:18I'm there for you.
- 13:19No, but like, you're there for you.
- 13:21No, like, I never joined Agia until you talked me into it.
- 13:24Like, I don't like go out and join groups.
- 13:26Like, I know you out of your ultraverse.
- 13:28My ultraverse.
- 13:30That's exactly.
- 13:32No, I think that there's something so,
- 13:34and I was wondering because you were saying
- 13:35how you never negate an idea that comes out,
- 13:38and you've actually gotten on to me for negating ideas.
- 13:41And I am like, I'm like, I'm like a,
- 13:44people call my wife and I, we have creative abrasion.
- 13:48Someone named it creative abrasion.
- 13:51I like that.
- 13:51Yeah, because we like spark.
- 13:53You know, like, you can't start a fire
- 13:54without the flint and the stone going against each other.
- 13:57And there's like, it's, I don't know if it's aggressive.
- 14:01If you don't know me, you can feel an aggressiveness
- 14:04in creativity.
- 14:06It's not like a fun, letting us create.
- 14:07It's like, you start the fire with the flint stone, you know?
- 14:11Tim doesn't do anything that's not raw.
- 14:13I know it's not like that.
- 14:15Yeah.
- 14:15But I've been learning.
- 14:17I've been learning.
- 14:18It's not a fourth time.
- 14:19It's not a fourth time question.
- 14:21It's a fourth time question.
- 14:23Oh, no.
- 14:27It's a kids debate.
- 14:28I mean, we have some conversational wrestling,
- 14:32I guess you could say.
- 14:34But there is, I was thinking, because you've
- 14:37told me improv, the state is to not negate
- 14:40the one who comes with the idea.
- 14:42And I think that that's what makes it flow.
- 14:44That's what makes it entertaining.
- 14:46And it continues for us.
- 14:47And it forces you into uncomfortable positions, too.
- 14:50You're like, well, yeah, you're like, oh,
- 14:52this doesn't feel good.
- 14:53I don't like the idea of this happening.
- 14:55I was envisioning it going that way.
- 14:57But you have to let go of that reality.
- 14:59And it forces you to reckon with whatever
- 15:01they've put in front of you, which I hate in a new way.
- 15:06I kind of love it at the same time,
- 15:08because it's a different type of abrasion.
- 15:11It's like, to go with something that you're not
- 15:13totally comfortable with.
- 15:14You're like, all alone part of this instead of being
- 15:18against each other with it.
- 15:19It's like, let me wrestle with it in here.
- 15:21And let it go smooth for a minute.
- 15:24Someone recently told me, everything you want
- 15:26is downstream.
- 15:27Oh, at first, I was kind of against that,
- 15:30because I've been taught to climb upstream, get to top.
- 15:35And the other day, I was out in the woods with this guy's
- 15:39group that I'm in.
- 15:40And they said, just go walk by yourself
- 15:42and think and process.
- 15:44And my instinct was to go up his stream again.
- 15:46But then I felt this like, everything you want is downstream.
- 15:49And I just started going downstream.
- 15:52And it was so enjoyable.
- 15:53I was jumping from rock to rock.
- 15:55Like, there's so much more joy in going downstream.
- 15:58And I ended up with this beautiful pool.
- 16:00You're not climbing against the climb.
- 16:02You're not climbing again.
- 16:03Like, we're all taught to climb the ladder.
- 16:05And it's like this weird improv principle
- 16:08is kind of going downstream, going with the flow.
- 16:11Yeah.
- 16:12And not in a way of like, just let anyone do what they want.
- 16:14But in a way that lays at.
- 16:16It's not a lazy river kind of a more of a life.
- 16:19Like navigate.
- 16:20You can also twist.
- 16:21It can be rapid.
- 16:22It can be waterfalls.
- 16:23Totally.
- 16:24It can be challenging.
- 16:25Yeah.
- 16:26But yeah, the practice is in letting the flow happen and not
- 16:29staunching that.
- 16:30It's what's in the flow.
- 16:31Yeah.
- 16:32Versus what I had grown up doing, because I grew up with two brothers
- 16:36very close in age.
- 16:37One a year older and one a year and a half younger.
- 16:39So very.
- 16:40I was twice.
- 16:41Yeah, very close in age.
- 16:42So in that pursuit of survival, I learned to fight back.
- 16:47Yeah.
- 16:48That's my identity at my way.
- 16:49That's why you're always.
- 16:50Get my food.
- 16:51Boolean us around.
- 16:52Yeah.
- 16:53Don't mean to be.
- 16:54But there's a sense of like, if you don't fight, you're not
- 16:58going to get what you want.
- 16:59Yeah.
- 17:00Kind of thing.
- 17:01And but what it, it's like interesting to learn that you get what you want
- 17:05when you go into flow.
- 17:07And then you have more of an opportunity to turn it.
- 17:09Because then you're not fighting.
- 17:11What's the saying?
- 17:12You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
- 17:14Yeah.
- 17:15Yeah.
- 17:16Yeah.
- 17:17Yeah.
- 17:18You challenged me and I'm having to reconcile that.
- 17:21So let me challenge you.
- 17:22Yeah.
- 17:23Like it's sort of like a one-uping and you can see people who are really good
- 17:26at it.
- 17:27It's like their eyes sparkle when somebody throws them a curveball.
- 17:30They're like, you're on my level.
- 17:32Yeah.
- 17:33Yeah.
- 17:34Yeah.
- 17:35It's like really stimulating.
- 17:36I would imagine.
- 17:37I would ever get it.
- 17:38All this sounds really good.
- 17:40Like I think I feel like improv is a really good tool of force out in the world.
- 17:44But is there anything that drives you crazy about it?
- 17:47Like, is there anything like that?
- 17:48I mean, the same thing drives me crazy that I love.
- 17:51Yeah.
- 17:52It takes so long, you know, like working with people and you like have to go with it.
- 17:57And there's an instinct to say, I know already know what I want.
- 18:00And that's a bad instinct, I think.
- 18:02Because then you just, I think you just push through hints that you're in the wrong direction.
- 18:07Sometimes, but I think it's like I love hate relationship for me.
- 18:10It drives me crazy at the same time.
- 18:12Yeah.
- 18:13I just don't know enough about it.
- 18:15Like I...
- 18:16Can you improv an answer?
- 18:18I just did.
- 18:19I know.
- 18:20I know.
- 18:21I know.
- 18:22You know everything.
- 18:23Well, about improv.
- 18:24Well, did you know it started in 1731?
- 18:27That sounds like some shit.
- 18:28I would have said on the stage on the theater.
- 18:30Totally.
- 18:31I watched that thing back, y'all.
- 18:33I don't know anything about theater.
- 18:36We never try to say a name of a person or the title of a book.
- 18:41Don't let me try to give you a date in history unless something happens.
- 18:45Like, don't listen to anything coming out of my life.
- 18:48I'm more of a concept person.
- 18:50You know?
- 18:51That's how I am.
- 18:53There's nothing really that drives me crazy because I don't know much.
- 18:56I mean, I get the concept.
- 18:57I like the concept.
- 18:58I'm like, we'll have to put you in some places and you'll know it.
- 19:03Maybe.
- 19:04Give me a couple of weeks post this episode and then I'll have some ideas.
- 19:08We just start having some field trips and we'll send Dylan out.
- 19:12It's like, go over that table and just tell them you're a budding actress.
- 19:16Tell them what I have no problem telling those films that you're in.
- 19:19Dylan would be like all over that.
- 19:21Yeah, she would actually be really, really good at it.
- 19:23And they would believe it because they have this like Hollywood.
- 19:27Have you ever seen Ozark?
- 19:28Yeah.
- 19:29Don't be here.
- 19:32You actually, if you were to try it in fact.
- 19:37In fact, you were talking about theater the gateway apparently.
- 19:41She is.
- 19:42She is.
- 19:43Yeah, for Dylan at least.
- 19:46I think that if you were to go try some improv classes,
- 19:49you would at first feel like flustered and scared.
- 19:51Yeah.
- 19:52And it would probably be a lot of people who are older than you.
- 19:54But you get along quite well with people of all ages.
- 19:57I think you would have a great time.
- 19:59And I think you would discover you have like a core capability
- 20:03for this or aptitude for this.
- 20:05Because I do think, and I've watched you do this,
- 20:08it's just it's just committing to the bit, baby.
- 20:11That is true.
- 20:12It's just being like, okay, I'm accepting this as true
- 20:14and how do we roll with it?
- 20:16She's greater than you would thrive in that kind of environment.
- 20:19There is some kind of acute female's about some kind of actual improv thing
- 20:23that's coming up.
- 20:24Maybe we can.
- 20:25Oh.
- 20:26What's the meta level here?
- 20:28Is improv not in?
- 20:31Oh, I don't know.
- 20:32I think it is.
- 20:33I don't know.
- 20:34Is it a youth thing?
- 20:35I think it is a youth thing.
- 20:37I just don't think we have like, I don't think we're calling it improv.
- 20:40What do we call it, do you think?
- 20:41Life.
- 20:42Yeah.
- 20:43I was like, life.
- 20:44Trying to figure out what I'm doing.
- 20:45Yeah.
- 20:46Trying to figure all the shit out.
- 20:47Like, have you ever had like a friend who's like so bought into this trend?
- 20:51And it's like just not them, but they're like in it.
- 20:54Yeah.
- 20:55Like, we've got all that like experiences.
- 20:57So like, I feel like I am embodied by improv.
- 21:00It's just like, it's just, we're not calling it improv.
- 21:03Right.
- 21:04It's like a blind leader, blind.
- 21:05Oh, yeah.
- 21:06Yeah.
- 21:07One of my best friends likes to feign that he's really into a cold plunging.
- 21:10Goes every Thursday night.
- 21:11Oh, yeah.
- 21:12He hates it.
- 21:13He sounds like a loser.
- 21:14Yeah, I know.
- 21:15He sounds like a loser.
- 21:16Well, he sounds hideous.
- 21:17Well, he's a guy.
- 21:18Well, he's a guy.
- 21:19Oh.
- 21:20He's a guy.
- 21:21Oh.
- 21:22Is this also the group where don't you guys go and get naked?
- 21:25Oh, it's totally naked.
- 21:26It is.
- 21:28It's a different group.
- 21:29Oh, it's a different group.
- 21:30Oh, it's a different group.
- 21:31It's a different group.
- 21:32It's a different group.
- 21:33You don't know.
- 21:34That was not in that area.
- 21:35No.
- 21:36I was fully close.
- 21:37It was not the cold crunch group.
- 21:38Wow.
- 21:39I didn't want to cold crunch because it was a river, but it's a different group.
- 21:43Yeah, you couldn't just get it.
- 21:44Yeah.
- 21:45You couldn't just get it.
- 21:46Yeah, I couldn't go.
- 21:47Great.
- 21:48It's wondering.
- 21:49There's nothing weird happening.
- 21:50It's just a beautiful place.
- 21:52Here's the thing.
- 21:53I know where it is relative.
- 21:54I'll give you the logic.
- 21:55And I've done it.
- 21:56I'll give you the logic.
- 21:57When you get out of water, freezing water in the dead of winter.
- 22:00Yeah.
- 22:01And you have to deal with trunks frozen to you.
- 22:03That is no good.
- 22:04Is this a rope?
- 22:05No, this is for real.
- 22:06Oh, this is for real life.
- 22:07Yeah, this is for real life.
- 22:08And real life.
- 22:09It's a good problem.
- 22:10And I'm going to pass it over to you in a second.
- 22:13That's good.
- 22:14And the question we bring up in the meetings with somebody saying something.
- 22:16It's this is for real life.
- 22:19The answer is for real life.
- 22:20If somebody's saying something that you're not vibing with,
- 22:23or it feels like they're boasting,
- 22:24just just lean overseas.
- 22:26And I'll say,
- 22:27well, I know this is not about cold plundering,
- 22:29but since you bring it up.
- 22:31Is it not about cold plundering, though?
- 22:34The first seven times I went,
- 22:36I refused to go naked because of all the weirdness,
- 22:39the vibes and ridicule and all this stuff.
- 22:42And I also grew up a very prudish Christian.
- 22:45So nudity was a thing where you don't do it or it's evil or whatever it is.
- 22:49So when they told me they were going,
- 22:51they were going, hey, I was like, what?
- 22:53I'm not doing that.
- 22:54And I held onto my trunks for a long time.
- 22:57Flops.
- 22:58Flops.
- 22:59You literally hold them off.
- 23:00And I did.
- 23:01And I did.
- 23:02And it was a pain.
- 23:03You get out of the water.
- 23:04And you got these wet freezing.
- 23:06It's 20 degrees outside.
- 23:07Oh.
- 23:08The water is like in the mid-30s.
- 23:10And the trunks are frozen.
- 23:11And you got to put them in the back.
- 23:13It's good and cool.
- 23:14Or something to get them back.
- 23:15You're going to get naked at some point anyway.
- 23:17And we're not cold plundering in a sauna.
- 23:19We're cold plundering out in the river.
- 23:20So you've got to hike back out and get into your car.
- 23:22So by the seventh one, I was like, you know what?
- 23:24I'm doing this.
- 23:25And I was embarrassed by doing it because I grew up the way I grew up.
- 23:29But to be in the water with nothing between you and the elements.
- 23:32Oh, yeah.
- 23:33It's crazy.
- 23:34It was.
- 23:35And I'm beyond it now.
- 23:36I'm like, so non-prudish now.
- 23:37Oh, it was naked my first time.
- 23:39You were.
- 23:40I was impressed with that.
- 23:42I was impressed with that.
- 23:43You were just like, let's do this.
- 23:44Yeah.
- 23:45And we identified with the group.
- 23:46He wasn't pushing against the tide.
- 23:49Yeah, like whatever.
- 23:51Yeah.
- 23:52Well, I was born naked.
- 23:53So.
- 23:54Well, in high school, they make fun of you in locker rooms.
- 23:57Dude.
- 23:58When you get naked.
- 23:59So that.
- 24:00You can go to the bathroom without people laughing.
- 24:02You couldn't do number two's at the school.
- 24:05I remember going home, everybody was.
- 24:07Man, kids laughing you for the dumbest stuff.
- 24:10My kids don't do a number two's in their bathroom.
- 24:12At school.
- 24:13That's so funny.
- 24:14They hold it in.
- 24:16Because it's illegal.
- 24:18It's understandable illegal to have cameras in the bathroom.
- 24:21But the kids at their school wreck their bathroom.
- 24:24Like, they're writing all over the walls.
- 24:26They're like throwing toilet paper down the toilets.
- 24:28For us, it was if somebody would like come in to pee and see you in there.
- 24:32And push you against the wall.
- 24:34No, and then they go and tell everybody he was in there doing number two.
- 24:37And then like they all laugh.
- 24:39And then I never did it thankfully because I didn't want that.
- 24:43See an improv.
- 24:44You'd be like, yes, I was doing number two.
- 24:45And.
- 24:46Right.
- 24:47Yes.
- 24:48And it was like, yeah.
- 24:49What were you going to say?
- 24:51I was going to say.
- 24:52How cool would it have been that if they have like an improv class for like kindergarten
- 24:58or so they can actually navigate those.
- 25:00No.
- 25:01I think kindergarten is always their improv.
- 25:03They're improv.
- 25:04They're like you embody improv.
- 25:06I think kindergarten.
- 25:07Not your kindergarten.
- 25:08That's okay.
- 25:09I inhaled it.
- 25:10Yeah.
- 25:11In the good way.
- 25:12But you.
- 25:13The last episode that that kid came up at the zoo.
- 25:15You're Alex.
- 25:16I have a gut.
- 25:17That's improv.
- 25:18That is awesome.
- 25:19Yeah.
- 25:20Well, I love it.
- 25:21Okay.
- 25:22And this is where it's business advice, but more importantly, it's life advice.
- 25:26Like, I, it's, it opened my brain.
- 25:29Sorry, I got something in my eye.
- 25:31It opened my brain to the idea of, okay, not everything has to start with my idea.
- 25:36I forced myself to let go a little bit and play with people.
- 25:42And then you start to ask yourself, okay, what's the game I'm playing?
- 25:46Yeah.
- 25:47And I think if you can start every day like that, I heard somebody on TikTok or ever who's like,
- 25:51yeah, I want to go with my friends.
- 25:52We have to come up with a bit.
- 25:53Like, what's the bit tonight?
- 25:54Because you know, people go out to a bar or a club or whatever.
- 25:57And when they kind of like, I think a lot of people have a really lame time.
- 26:01Yeah.
- 26:02Because we've kind of lost the ability to like come and be.
- 26:05Yeah.
- 26:06What's the bit?
- 26:07And dance, whatever.
- 26:08So like they would come up with some kooky thing that they were doing that evening.
- 26:11And then like the whole night becomes this like three acts sort of like.
- 26:14And then this happened.
- 26:15And then that that happened.
- 26:16And you've got like a narrative structure for it.
- 26:18Yeah.
- 26:19You live like this.
- 26:20We don't always name the game.
- 26:21There's a heavy bit.
- 26:22Oh, but there's always some little ruse.
- 26:25Yeah.
- 26:26It's funny because you know, I was just on vacation.
- 26:29I did a nice hike in this wildlife reserve, which was awesome.
- 26:35And one of my nephews was just, you know, walking along.
- 26:39He's like, I saw a bear.
- 26:40I was like, he didn't.
- 26:41He's like, yeah, yeah.
- 26:42It was a big bear over there.
- 26:44Then I saw like a, I saw like three lizards.
- 26:48And he was telling you all these stories.
- 26:50And I knew I was like, I was calling bullshit.
- 26:52Yeah.
- 26:53But I was like playing along.
- 26:54Because it was like.
- 26:55I was calling bullshit.
- 26:56Yeah.
- 26:57I was like, he's totally new.
- 26:59Oh, probably.
- 27:00He's like, this is, but that was his imagination.
- 27:03Like coming out.
- 27:04And he was sharing with me.
- 27:05But that's what I felt like a gift to me.
- 27:07But that's where we get taught not to do anymore.
- 27:09People call bullshit.
- 27:10And that's when you start having to grow up.
- 27:12Oh, yeah.
- 27:13There's no more pretend.
- 27:14You can't say though.
- 27:15Right.
- 27:16No, I didn't want to do that for him.
- 27:17I'm like, dude, okay.
- 27:19What?
- 27:20How big was it?
- 27:21It was really big.
- 27:22I'm like, dude, I hate I missed it.
- 27:24Yeah.
- 27:25You see it again.
- 27:26Because I don't want to see it.
- 27:27I feel like I'm missed out.
- 27:28But the two of you for a moment, at least.
- 27:30You were in this little reality bubble together where you decided there was a bear.
- 27:34Yeah.
- 27:35And I just feel like there's so many times in life.
- 27:38And even an agency life where like even if we can all like wink at the camera and be like, that's not real.
- 27:44We could just look at each other and be like, yeah, she was having a really bad day.
- 27:48Instead of like, she was really mean to me.
- 27:50Right.
- 27:51Or, you know, the even more absurd version of it.
- 27:54Like, yeah, she tripped getting out of the car this morning and spilled hot coffee all over herself.
- 27:58Like you tell yourself the whatever.
- 28:00Yeah.
- 28:01It would be a bad day.
- 28:02But yeah, I think there's just something about like deciding what reality you want to live in for a minute.
- 28:07And something to call a delusion.
- 28:09And how brave you're going to live in that reality.
- 28:12Yeah.
- 28:13And there's a limit, right?
- 28:14Like you can't go fudge some numbers and be like, yeah, the numbers are in financially.
- 28:19We should do this.
- 28:20Isn't that what the government's doing?
- 28:22I love that you can fight numbers as the government.
- 28:26But then you get your own taxes and you can't fudge those numbers.
- 28:29Yeah.
- 28:30You can't go trillions of dollars in debt in your own home taxes.
- 28:33No.
- 28:34Oh man.
- 28:35God.
- 28:36There is that line though of like improv serves until, and I don't know where that line in the sand is.
- 28:43It was not a business because I will tell you, I feel like when we pitch the clients when we are at the table with clients,
- 28:50doesn't it feel a little bit like improv?
- 28:53Like we go to the table.
- 28:54Oh, we're not really knowing exactly what we're going to say.
- 28:56I mean, when I think when Dylan came in, she was improvving with us.
- 29:00Oh, yeah, totally.
- 29:01Like, can you do this?
- 29:02Yeah, I can do that.
- 29:03No, everyone does that.
- 29:04Yeah.
- 29:05And she, but she learns.
- 29:06She does.
- 29:07Yeah.
- 29:08Yeah.
- 29:09It feels like that.
- 29:10When we're at the table, it feels like we are creating this magical world because we're having to do a little bit of a song and dance because we want the clients to trust us and give us the business because we know we're going to crush it.
- 29:23Yeah.
- 29:24And so of course, we're just like feeding off of each other.
- 29:26Well, we just have to, and when we all take our improv class, I'm sure they'll teach us about this.
- 29:30You have to like make some agreements at the beginning.
- 29:33And a lot of times there are some implicit agreements baked into the practice of improv, like the SN and the not negating things.
- 29:39Right.
- 29:40But then there are like games that you can play that you can also do more freeform, but you kind of have to build skills in the games.
- 29:47And so you ask yourself, what game are you playing?
- 29:49What are the assumptions of that world?
- 29:51And I think when you go to pitch a client or you're in a meeting with a client trying to workshop a creative idea, you as a group have made some agreements.
- 29:59Yeah.
- 30:00About like what are things that won't change.
- 30:03Yeah.
- 30:04They're implied when you walk in a meeting.
- 30:05Yeah.
- 30:06And I think if we're all on agreement about the input, so to speak, that's why like research matters a lot.
- 30:11And having like a body of facts.
- 30:14If you will, just for everybody to say yes, I'm free.
- 30:17Yeah, exactly.
- 30:18Yeah.
- 30:19Like a facts machine.
- 30:20It's good.
- 30:21A ton of little facts.
- 30:22Yeah.
- 30:24It has to be facts.
- 30:25Siri wants to accidentally put F-A-X as I was voice transcribing my text instead of F-A-C-D-I.
- 30:32So it became this running joke.
- 30:34I'm like, facts.
- 30:35Facts.
- 30:36Facts.
- 30:37It's pretty good.
- 30:38Facts.
- 30:39Apropriate.
- 30:40Correct.
- 30:41Long story short, I think you're completely right, but it's like the whole point is not to come in with a preconceived idea and fight for that idea.
- 30:48The idea is come in with an idea and see how it evolves and is shaped by the conversation and let it go.
- 30:56And I don't know this perspective is shared by the whole industry.
- 30:59There are a lot of, I know creatives in general will fight for their ideas.
- 31:03There are a lot of agencies that literally, and I've been here as well, literally feel like they know the right answer against whatever the client says.
- 31:11Oh, I've never known that feeling.
- 31:14But Regina, we're meeting with a pretty well known designer and he said that his perspective when he would go in with the client was like they were his friends.
- 31:23And this is a really, really successful designer.
- 31:26The top.
- 31:27And he said that when he would go in and they would suggest when they were going to be edits, he'd be like, yeah.
- 31:35And he really like would work with them.
- 31:37You know, we're taught to like, oh, the client always says make the logo bigger.
- 31:40The client always says.
- 31:41We hold the line of what good is.
- 31:43We hold the standard.
- 31:44Exactly.
- 31:45And we're like this.
- 31:46We have our noses up of what looks good and what doesn't look good.
- 31:49And when he said that, I totally, I felt myself soften towards connect with the client feeling.
- 31:57Yeah.
- 31:58Instead of fighting for this, I want this sort of getting offended.
- 32:02I mean, the reality is clients can actually, because it's not their world, they can come up with some ideas that feel like you do want to like scoff at them.
- 32:12That's the reality.
- 32:13But his perspective really did shift the perception of that.
- 32:17Right.
- 32:18When a client comes up with an idea, they're just trying to communicate the essence of what they want.
- 32:22Like an objective.
- 32:23Yeah.
- 32:24Like a friend.
- 32:25So the challenge is to our friends perspective, like is to take that and turn it into something a little more positive and a little more collaborative.
- 32:37Like, okay, well, I hear what you're saying.
- 32:39But maybe this is what you mean.
- 32:40Or maybe something like this might work.
- 32:42And like you said, it feels more like a friendship.
- 32:44And less like, I'm the designer and you're the client.
- 32:47You have no idea what you're talking about.
- 32:49We're here to solve a problem.
- 32:50Like at the end of the day, yes, we love design and we love making things.
- 32:54But if it doesn't solve a problem or help somebody and we can't tell them what would help them.
- 33:00You know, they've got to tell us in a way and we just support them on that journey.
- 33:04We've got to listen.
- 33:05And that is literally improbable.
- 33:07I've said, you just said, yeah, here what you're saying and you take the story further.
- 33:13You take it further.
- 33:14Yeah.
- 33:15And you don't make them feel embarrassed for bringing it up.
- 33:17And you don't get offended because I was like, I mean, I have done that in the past.
- 33:21Where a client came up with his whack at the idea and I was like, that's going to be bad for this, that and the other.
- 33:27And their reaction was a little jarring because I could tell I had offended them when it wasn't my intent.
- 33:34But I was like, oh, this is definitely, there's a better way to handle this.
- 33:39There's a better way to do this.
- 33:40And I think what our friend taught us, that is it.
- 33:44You treat them like a friend.
- 33:45Yeah.
- 33:46And most of our clients become friends anyway.
- 33:48So it's not far stretch.
- 33:50Yeah.
- 33:51How do you not become a yes man, though, or yes woman?
- 33:53I mean, I think you still hold up.
- 33:55You still have your expertise that you draw from.
- 33:58And so there's a way to challenge those ideas in a playful or even just more collaborative way.
- 34:04So the client feels like they're a part of the process.
- 34:07But they're not being shamed and then I haven't given anything up.
- 34:11You're just taking what they're giving you and you're turning into something a little more evolved.
- 34:15And that probably makes them feel like they're contributing.
- 34:18And then it's a win.
- 34:20You know, you're not just saying, yes, I'm going to do that.
- 34:22You're saying, I see where you're saying, how can we approach that in this way?
- 34:28I will say though, improv is better when everybody knows the game.
- 34:36Yeah, the basics, what game are we playing, we've made the agreements.
- 34:39And that's not always the case, especially if you've just met someone who potentially could be a client
- 34:45and you're trying to establish that rapport, treat them like a friend.
- 34:49I think we as a group actually really struggle with this.
- 34:54And in particular right now, we are like adopting some new ways of working that make it easier for us to take on bigger projects.
- 35:02And we're really excited about it.
- 35:04But it means that some of the, we call them legacy clients who maybe knew me or Tim or Reggie,
- 35:09whoever before when we weren't together as 40 hearts, they have expectations about a way of working
- 35:16or like they were playing in a different frame or a different game.
- 35:19And I think it's hard to, I don't want to say stick to your guns because that's not at all what we're doing.
- 35:26Like hold space for like, well, this is the quality standard that I feel I need to me to be like fulfilled in my work.
- 35:35Or I need this much money in order to do that work is such a difficult thing to say.
- 35:41But I think it, but it's so important because we want to make sure that we are able to solve the problem.
- 35:48And sadly, it takes a lot, it takes a certain amount of time, which is tied to money to be able to solve those problems effectively.
- 35:55Yeah. And I think that there's a thing that I'm playing with right now that you know how it goes is, you know,
- 36:04clients bring us their feelings all the time.
- 36:06They might not be naming it as a feeling at all times because we get weird and we get PBGBs about having feelings at work at all.
- 36:13But a client will bring you a feeling masked as sometimes like a business problem or a management problem.
- 36:20And it's our job to like deal with those feelings like you're saying work through it and not ram up against it.
- 36:27But I feel like the moments where I've had success with that, if I can call it that, are there moments when I also share how I'm feeling and without like dumping it on someone.
- 36:39Like I feel this way, fix it, but just being able to like hold space here and be like, that's making me a little uncomfortable because I'm worried that I won't be able to fill in the blank or whatever.
- 36:50And it's not your job to solve it for me, but I have to acknowledge.
- 36:55So this is me saying, I care about you and how you feel and I'm hoping that you care about me and how I feel and I'm about to learn with your response, whatever you say to that next is going to teach me what's true and what's not.
- 37:05Frankly, if they can't respond to that, that teaches you something about where you stand and I feel like the limit shifts a little bit.
- 37:13Regardless of the dynamic, there's a lesson to be had in it and it helps dictate how you move forward.
- 37:18Like, oh, you want to have this kind of relationship.
- 37:21All right, well, at that distance, here's what I can offer you.
- 37:24I think I do that in friendships too because I am a pretty open guy.
- 37:28I'm totally, and I feel like my deepest closest friendships are people that I can say what I want or what I'm feeling and not have to mask it and not have to hide behind some veil of perfection and wellness.
- 37:45But when you're just getting to meet someone and you're just sort of flirting with what kind of friendship this is going to be.
- 37:53It does feel like dating.
- 37:54And they're like, ooh, that's an overshare or whatever.
- 37:58And you're like, okay, not there yet.
- 38:00I see the line.
- 38:02Maybe we won't be there.
- 38:04But yeah.
- 38:05It is a little bit of a dance like, okay, at what point do I start to insert more of my personality into this?
- 38:10And, you know, what's too much or what's just enough?
- 38:14So if you're feeling bodied by this, Dylan, how does it feel going through life where the line between improv and what do you call it, delusion?
- 38:23How do you feel like that line sets itself up with you as you go about your life day to day, embodied in it?
- 38:30It's my life right now.
- 38:31It's a fine line between the two.
- 38:33Between improv and delusion.
- 38:35We're on that tightrope, I feel.
- 38:37Oh man.
- 38:38Man, I...
- 38:40Oh.
- 38:41Got her.
- 38:44Is this improv?
- 38:45This is not improv.
- 38:47This is like...
- 38:48The improv and over.
- 38:49This is aimed.
- 38:50This is me being like, I am truly delusional.
- 38:53Like when I walk in these doors and when I walk out there, it's no...
- 38:56No, it's just like...
- 38:58What's the...
- 38:59Is this salulu?
- 39:00Exactly.
- 39:01I am delusional.
- 39:03I feel delusional at times too.
- 39:05Yeah.
- 39:06Oh my gosh.
- 39:07We, as a friend group, we were talking this weekend and I was like, dude, I walk into some situations and I'm like,
- 39:13I'm delusional that I'll get it done so that it won't get done.
- 39:16And then it'll be great.
- 39:17I was like, it'll be great.
- 39:19I feel like...
- 39:21When you said that, I was like, if you could imagine Miss Frizzle getting electrocuted and she's like telling the kids, no, it's fine.
- 39:29It was fine.
- 39:30It was fine.
- 39:31It was fine.
- 39:32Okay, this is totally normal.
- 39:33But maybe that answers your question.
- 39:35It's definitely good.
- 39:36And I love it.
- 39:37But in that interesting, I feel like...
- 39:41I'm just speaking to the person with the most improv experience, not someone with a lot of improv experience.
- 39:46But I feel like that's a thing that we lean away from in real life, but like the best improvisers lean into.
- 39:54Like, oh, I'm being electrocuted.
- 39:57I'm very uncomfortable.
- 39:59We feel the need to like, restrain that or push it away.
- 40:03Whereas I think in real improv, you would find a way to like, emphasize and go into it a little bit further.
- 40:09But it does make you seem a little crazier, unconventional.
- 40:13And that's a hard thing to be.
- 40:16Yeah.
- 40:17Well, in the context of like theater and improv, you have the freedom to be whoever you want to be.
- 40:24And I think you have that in life, but you can make up stuff.
- 40:28It's playing the game.
- 40:30In theater and live.
- 40:32In theater.
- 40:33Like, you have the freedom.
- 40:34You have the permission to play the game.
- 40:36The way it's to be played, make up thing.
- 40:38Yeah.
- 40:39Just come up with things.
- 40:40But also, I am in live-in by electricity.
- 40:43It's actually charging me and I'm a robot.
- 40:45There are some sentences.
- 40:46Yeah.
- 40:47But in life, you have to fall back on some realities.
- 40:50Like, okay, let's bring up this one for instance, because this makes me feel delusional.
- 40:53And I've only come to this recently.
- 40:55Let's do this once a week.
- 40:56What makes you feel delusional?
- 40:58What makes you?
- 41:00The other side of the improv penny is delusion.
- 41:03No, so I did this talk on My LinkedIn channel about rich, being rich.
- 41:09Yeah.
- 41:10And listen, I think I've been delusional.
- 41:13It's 12 plus minutes.
- 41:14It is.
- 41:15It's a lot.
- 41:16That's a such that hard of me.
- 41:17You know, I love you when I spend 12 minutes listening.
- 41:19Yeah.
- 41:20You don't have to watch it.
- 41:21You can just like it.
- 41:22That's what LinkedIn's all about.
- 41:23Don't watch this light.
- 41:24Actually.
- 41:25You need her long form.
- 41:26I was like, what do you see?
- 41:27My most recent one.
- 41:28You don't piss anybody off.
- 41:30That's exactly what I was open.
- 41:33I'm like, this is happening.
- 41:35No, okay.
- 41:36So my next one after this was a lot shorter.
- 41:39Yeah.
- 41:40I watched that one too.
- 41:41That's the one where you're like, I don't know.
- 41:42I think I was a little exposed.
- 41:43It's about to break.
- 41:44The most interesting thing is I have always thought of myself as rich.
- 41:49But I am nowhere near the super rich.
- 41:52And sometimes I think we, and I learned about this sociology class in school,
- 41:56where we see ourselves and we relate to something above us,
- 42:01and kind of marketing, and the society kind of aims us toward something
- 42:06what you want to be, like the American dream, the goal.
- 42:09Like another form of improvisation.
- 42:11Right.
- 42:12And so I had learned to improv my whole life that I am rich.
- 42:15And the thing about it is, and what you learn in sociology,
- 42:17is that you end up judging the rest of your group.
- 42:21Your people who make money similar to you, and have things similar to you,
- 42:25you make fun of them, are in debt similar to your debt,
- 42:28have to borrow money, and all of this, all these things.
- 42:32You judge them as having not made it, or not doing well in their business,
- 42:36or not being good with money, not thinking ahead.
- 42:39You can have all these judges.
- 42:40This is the social perception.
- 42:43Right.
- 42:44And you're not doing good.
- 42:45And not being rich has a lot of negative impact on your,
- 42:49the impression you leave with others.
- 42:51Yeah, the ability to have to become rich is inhibited by your feeling of abundance or whatever.
- 42:56And it's also preventing us from getting the class consciousness.
- 42:59So I think that's the worth.
- 43:00Is this capitalism?
- 43:01Oh, baby.
- 43:02Yes, it touches on these things.
- 43:04Right, because you have to be dissatisfied with where you are,
- 43:07to have to buy things and to take part in the economy.
- 43:12You have to be dissatisfied with where you are.
- 43:14Else, nothing would sell.
- 43:15You'd be like, I'm fine.
- 43:16Let's eat together.
- 43:17Let's hang out.
- 43:18But no, you've got to go out and buy this, and you've got to buy that.
- 43:20So you can look like you fit in here, and you fit in there.
- 43:22And so if you were to do a study on people driving nice cars,
- 43:27how many people are in debt and imprisoned by that payment to have the car,
- 43:31versus how many people are driving?
- 43:33I mean, like you hear stories of the ultra wealthy driving crappy cars.
- 43:37Like there's one.
- 43:38Oh, totally.
- 43:39And Jeff Bezos is classically known for driving a Civic when he was a billionaire.
- 43:43So that's just one, one thing that you can touch on.
- 43:48But so my improv has been, and this is what I came to yesterday,
- 43:53is that my improv has been acting like I'm that,
- 43:56so that I get the job.
- 43:57You know, they think they're, they're peers with, he's a peer with me.
- 44:00Yeah.
- 44:01And he understands me.
- 44:02And you don't feel needy.
- 44:03Right.
- 44:04Is the other thing.
- 44:05Right.
- 44:06They don't.
- 44:07You roll up in this car.
- 44:08Oh man, he's going to try.
- 44:09And you know my car like right now is that car.
- 44:11And so I'm struggling with it every day.
- 44:13I'm thinking about it.
- 44:14Why am I so?
- 44:15You're Jeff Bezos.
- 44:16You're just pulling.
- 44:17You're pulling.
- 44:18It is a Honda.
- 44:19It's a year Honda.
- 44:20I think you're doing it.
- 44:21But there's something about him acting.
- 44:22It's better than a Civic.
- 44:23It's in the court.
- 44:24It's true.
- 44:25Yeah, you're won up.
- 44:26But you're won up.
- 44:27But you're cool.
- 44:28If you're a billionaire and you're driving a crappy car.
- 44:29Yeah.
- 44:30But if you don't have any money to bank your driving a crappy car,
- 44:32that's not so cool.
- 44:33Yeah.
- 44:34That means you're terrible with money, you're terrible with business.
- 44:35You don't know what you're doing.
- 44:36Those are the perceptions.
- 44:37That's just all perception though.
- 44:38So I have improbbed around that my whole life.
- 44:42And I've been good at it.
- 44:43If I can avoid being seen in certain lights.
- 44:47Like, if you don't ever see my house.
- 44:49I mean, I don't have a small house.
- 44:50But.
- 44:51If you don't actually make me pay for dinner.
- 44:52But there are things that you can.
- 44:53And you could pay for dinner.
- 44:54You could put on a credit card.
- 44:55And that's like, you're rich.
- 44:56Oh, yeah.
- 44:57I'm just saying that it pushes you to do things
- 44:58that you shouldn't have to be doing.
- 44:59Okay.
- 45:00And so when I said this online,
- 45:03then I started to be like, oh no.
- 45:05I can't improv that anymore.
- 45:07Right.
- 45:08No idea.
- 45:09I just never wanted to do it.
- 45:10Right.
- 45:11So now I can say that I can't act that part.
- 45:14And I love that.
- 45:15I think that was a really nice way of just like cracking open
- 45:18that show.
- 45:19And I'm like, this is who I am.
- 45:20So that was my line.
- 45:21The whole thing is about authenticity.
- 45:23And I think you leaned into it in the best way in that.
- 45:26That's what I felt.
- 45:27And so my delusion is gone.
- 45:28But now I don't have any of the illusion.
- 45:30Which is sometimes an enjoyable thing to have in creativity
- 45:33and in story.
- 45:34But look at you though.
- 45:36Like you carry an essence about you.
- 45:38That you could walk out of the shittiest car.
- 45:41And nobody's going to be like, oh, and this guy, you know.
- 45:44I'm probably the one doing that most.
- 45:46Yeah.
- 45:47You are the one doing that most.
- 45:49Absolutely.
- 45:50People see your glow.
- 45:51They hear you talk.
- 45:52They hear your convictions.
- 45:53They hear your intellect.
- 45:56And that's what comes off.
- 45:59It's not like, oh, I watched him get out of that.
- 46:01Whatever.
- 46:02He's a loser.
- 46:03Yeah.
- 46:05I think at the end of the day, I see a lot of people do that
- 46:11where they overspend on things they can't really afford.
- 46:15Like they'll have a $700 a month car payment
- 46:19and go pull up in front of a double wide.
- 46:21No offense to people with double wide.
- 46:22Yeah.
- 46:23That's all for show.
- 46:25Like you're living in a place that maybe could be more comfortable.
- 46:28And if you read, if you adjusted those resources.
- 46:32It shows you, like, priorities.
- 46:35It's really important to them to have a huge TV
- 46:38or to drive a nice car or whatever that thing is.
- 46:41But here's where it really came down to me.
- 46:43The car became such a hot point because I drove it all the way through college.
- 46:46And then one of my best friends is also his friend with my brother.
- 46:51My brother is a builder.
- 46:53He has a building company, a general contractor.
- 46:55And he was working for this friend of ours.
- 46:59And my brother sees this other guy from a competing builder company
- 47:02pull up to the house next to them.
- 47:04And he says, well, look at that truck.
- 47:06Look how much money that guy spent on that truck.
- 47:08And he's not spending it on da da da.
- 47:10And my friend said, I actually think that guy's more successful in his business
- 47:15than you are with your van.
- 47:17And when I heard that, I was like, that is nuts.
- 47:21So my brother had this sense that he's wasting all this money
- 47:24and going into debt for this truck.
- 47:26That perception from other guys was that he looked at that job
- 47:30or that guy's work as higher end because the guy has a nicer vehicle.
- 47:34So that's where it hit me that someone will look at your...
- 47:39What is it?
- 47:42Like your taste.
- 47:43Yeah.
- 47:44They're looking at your taste level.
- 47:45Yeah.
- 47:46And they're like, you're driving that.
- 47:47Your taste level must not be up to snuff.
- 47:51My cool is friends.
- 47:53Right now, they're wearing two dollar flip flops
- 47:55and like jeans that have been worn for the past 20 years.
- 47:59See I love that.
- 48:00And that's like leaning into it.
- 48:02Like I'm not trying to impress people.
- 48:04I don't know.
- 48:05I think perception is a really hard thing.
- 48:07And of course, I can sit here and be like, don't listen to perception.
- 48:10Like, you know, like that could be like a really light out.
- 48:13What a great takeaway from this episode.
- 48:14Yeah, what a great...
- 48:15About the haters.
- 48:16Yeah.
- 48:17Like what a cliche answer.
- 48:18What if we did just completely ignore perception and go our own way?
- 48:23To me, internally, it's like my perception.
- 48:26I've got it like five people on my hand.
- 48:29Like, and they're like their opinions matter.
- 48:31And I think when we get too much on them,
- 48:33let's go.
- 48:34Yeah, you're on them.
- 48:35We have three of them are here.
- 48:37Yeah, I think three of them are here counting well.
- 48:39Yeah.
- 48:40I don't know.
- 48:41I think that's like the hard part of like being human right now
- 48:44is like everybody is giving their perception and their idea.
- 48:47And it's like who, like that's...
- 48:50I mean, that perception is really hard for me to value.
- 48:53Because they're not in my inner circle.
- 48:55Like if what matters more, the car that I drive,
- 48:58or would I put my life on the line for you to like go and do something
- 49:02and like follow your dreams and give you support.
- 49:04Yeah.
- 49:05So I don't know.
- 49:07I hate perception because she's kind of a bitch,
- 49:10but she does run us sometimes.
- 49:13I don't do you one better.
- 49:15Half the time, talk about cars.
- 49:17Half the time, I can't tell if it's because I don't want someone
- 49:23to think the wrong thing about me that comes up all the time.
- 49:26Or is it my own sense of self that it's like,
- 49:30I am in the middle of a fashion crisis.
- 49:33I complain about it to Dylan three times a week.
- 49:36We're working on it.
- 49:37Yeah.
- 49:38Because Dylan has never been in a fashion crisis.
- 49:40She's got her shit worked out.
- 49:42You're so sexy.
- 49:43I mean...
- 49:44I think we're about to say she's so sexy.
- 49:46I'm like...
- 49:47She's really going to promote her dress.
- 49:49I love a word to you.
- 49:50So sexy.
- 49:51People don't argue.
- 49:53But for minutes, a different standard.
- 49:55It's like there's a pre-scribed,
- 49:57and by the way, you should challenge that.
- 49:59I want to see kilt.
- 50:00I want to see skirts.
- 50:01I want to see high heels.
- 50:02But I...
- 50:03I'm scared.
- 50:04You're scared.
- 50:06Dude, you're just not wearing a kilt.
- 50:08I'm a co-punch.
- 50:09I'm going to get out of my Honda.
- 50:11You've got to watch...
- 50:12For co-punch, you just take it off again.
- 50:14We're going to watch traitors,
- 50:16and just sort of embody Ellen coming into your heritage.
- 50:19I love it.
- 50:20Kilt it.
- 50:21I don't know.
- 50:22I don't know.
- 50:24I don't know.
- 50:26It was one thing for Tim to take all this clothes off.
- 50:28It's gonna be another thing for him to put a kilt back on.
- 50:31Put a kilt back on, dude.
- 50:33I'm not like real Honda kilt,
- 50:35but I'm just saying, like,
- 50:36men's expression in their fashion
- 50:38is so one-no right now,
- 50:40and frankly, it's a little boring,
- 50:42but we expect it...
- 50:43Not you two in particular.
- 50:44I told her to wear a crop shirt,
- 50:46but he would not do it.
- 50:47And, y'all, I'm just going to say it.
- 50:49I'm just going to say,
- 50:50and I'm going to try to never say it again.
- 50:52What are you working out for?
- 50:53If you don't...
- 50:54It's true.
- 50:55Okay, let's just get now.
- 50:56I'm not sure.
- 50:59I'm working out so I can move,
- 51:00and then some straw.
- 51:01Oh, yeah.
- 51:02I don't think it's a body image at all.
- 51:04I'm just saying, like, I'm in a store...
- 51:12Rarely in my eyes.
- 51:13I'm usually shopping online
- 51:14because I can't find anything that I like.
- 51:16And I'm thinking to myself,
- 51:18oh, well, I like that.
- 51:19And then there's, like, the abstraction of,
- 51:21do I like it to look at on somebody else?
- 51:24Or do I...
- 51:25would I feel like me when I was wearing it?
- 51:27And then you have to get into, like,
- 51:28where would I wear this?
- 51:30Where women is a much more complicated thing
- 51:32than it's been.
- 51:33And then you're, like, in this weird zone,
- 51:35and I'm so rarely thinking,
- 51:37oh, what will other people think of me?
- 51:39I'm thinking, like, do I like the way this looks?
- 51:41Is this a color that I like?
- 51:43Does this embody or express something about who I am?
- 51:45And half the time, I can't figure that part out.
- 51:47So when we talk about expression,
- 51:49it's, like, or, yeah, or perception.
- 51:52I'm like, who are these voices in my head?
- 51:55And is that truly me?
- 51:57Or am I hearing a critic that I've picked up somewhere?
- 52:01Oh, really?
- 52:02Do you want to hear my fan?
- 52:03It's your inner monologue.
- 52:04My?
- 52:05Yeah, Tim.
- 52:06Tell me, fashion advice.
- 52:07I also had a fashion crisis, but I have a Megan.
- 52:09So that was a big help.
- 52:11Which, I'm trying to get a Megan.
- 52:12It's not working out for me.
- 52:13We all are.
- 52:14No.
- 52:15Coffee with your wife yesterday.
- 52:16What?
- 52:17Yeah.
- 52:18She looked great.
- 52:19She looked very flexible.
- 52:20She looked great.
- 52:21And she was trying to help me,
- 52:22because she's really good with this stuff.
- 52:23And she's like, who do you want to look like?
- 52:25And I was like,
- 52:26me?
- 52:27No, I didn't say that.
- 52:28That would have been better.
- 52:29But that's a dead end.
- 52:30That's a dead end road.
- 52:31I don't know what me look like.
- 52:33I said Indiana Jones.
- 52:35Oh.
- 52:36And James Bond.
- 52:37She's like, so you want like a tux with like a satchel?
- 52:41Wow.
- 52:42And a gun?
- 52:44This is where, no.
- 52:45So what I felt in this one, I want to see if you feel,
- 52:48is I want to feel like they feel,
- 52:50because they feel like they are what they are.
- 52:53You know?
- 52:54Yeah.
- 52:55Their outfit fits their life,
- 52:56and their work, and their thing.
- 52:58Okay.
- 52:59I'm tracking.
- 53:00We're singing it now.
- 53:01Okay.
- 53:02You know, but this could be pants that Indiana Jones wore.
- 53:05You're right.
- 53:06You're right.
- 53:07This could be like what James Bond wore when he's like it is.
- 53:09Yeah.
- 53:10I know so that.
- 53:11Daniel Craig.
- 53:12Daniel Craig.
- 53:13Yeah.
- 53:14Okay.
- 53:15So if you take something that you're like,
- 53:16child, childlessly, childlessly.
- 53:18Yeah.
- 53:19Into.
- 53:20That's a good idea.
- 53:21And then you can type first.
- 53:22Or you can then back into it.
- 53:23And then you can feel your weight into it.
- 53:25Versus like this flattened this top,
- 53:28this is what all the subscriptions do.
- 53:30You know, you want this top of these bottoms.
- 53:32And to me, it always felt so forced.
- 53:35Yeah.
- 53:36And contrived.
- 53:37I wanted to feel something that is natural.
- 53:38And I think Indiana Jones and James Bond
- 53:39would feel very natural to me.
- 53:41Like he fights in a tuxedo.
- 53:43And Indiana Jones uses his whip to go over.
- 53:46You know what I think?
- 53:48I think.
- 53:49It's Tim with a pencil.
- 53:50It's a very sharp pencil.
- 53:52Yeah.
- 53:53I think the thing that you're that you're identifying in there,
- 53:56it's not natural as much of this confidence.
- 53:59Like what they're wearing allows them to be comfortable
- 54:01with what they're doing.
- 54:02That is how I dress.
- 54:03It's like you're flexible.
- 54:04Yeah.
- 54:05I dress so like I think to myself when I put something on,
- 54:08how do I feel?
- 54:10Do I feel confident?
- 54:11Do I feel like I am me?
- 54:13I can be myself.
- 54:15I can be my best self.
- 54:16Is my outfit going to hold back my personality or my character?
- 54:21Sometimes I've said can I climb a tree in that?
- 54:24And that's like I would just call.
- 54:27I would just call.
- 54:28I would just call.
- 54:29Tree in that tree.
- 54:30He's got the level of real.
- 54:31It's like the real top.
- 54:32I need to be.
- 54:33Ever like got to live into that fully.
- 54:35And we can talk about the wise.
- 54:37And adventurous.
- 54:38Yeah, it's just like the doing of it all.
- 54:40Like I don't like to feel restricted and confined.
- 54:42And I think a lot of women's clothes do that.
- 54:45But then I wear shit like this,
- 54:47which I feel like I could physically I could climb a tree,
- 54:50but isn't appropriate.
- 54:52In our clothes you've had every day.
- 54:54Yeah, thank you.
- 54:55You all get in the river and I'll go.
- 54:57You're right.
- 54:58You can go climb a tree.
- 54:59You're like a clean.
- 55:00A clean.
- 55:01A clean climbing cloud.
- 55:03You're still going to drink it.
- 55:05Women.
- 55:06Oh, man.
- 55:08I did not have that idea.
- 55:10I don't know.
- 55:11Go viral.
- 55:12I don't follow you.
- 55:14I would.
- 55:15I would.
- 55:16I would follow you.
- 55:17You have only fans, which is.
- 55:19Maybe women climbing trees.
- 55:21That's basically draped over a leash.
- 55:24And the camera would have to be perspective at the top.
- 55:28You see the pictures, the goats who climb.
- 55:31There's like goats who climb into trees,
- 55:33but it's women.
- 55:35Goats.
- 55:36They're a capricorn of me.
- 55:38There's a woman that does that does this.
- 55:40I'd stumble.
- 55:41I don't know.
- 55:42She'll climb up the tree.
- 55:44She'll climb up the tree.
- 55:45You don't know.
- 55:46She'll climb up the tree.
- 55:47No, not native.
- 55:48Not native.
- 55:49She climbed trees.
- 55:50But there is something.
- 55:51I don't know why my algorithm fed me this.
- 55:54But this was on Instagram.
- 55:55And there is this woman who climbs trees.
- 55:56That's her thing.
- 55:57And so she will go out with her family for a hike and I'll
- 56:01like, on it.
- 56:02This is a good one.
- 56:03Is your time.
- 56:04And she'll climb up the tree.
- 56:05I love that.
- 56:06That's her.
- 56:07And you're like, that's a climbable tree.
- 56:08I never admit that, because it seems so childish.
- 56:11It's like a ladder.
- 56:12It's better than me to get up there.
- 56:14She won't climb any trees.
- 56:15And what about...
- 56:16It's climbing.
- 56:17It's climbing the tree and was like barking at dogs.
- 56:21Is it a walk by?
- 56:22That's where we cut it.
- 56:23Improv, delusion.
- 56:25She was totally barking at the dog.
- 56:27People were like, okay lady, crazy tree lady.
- 56:30Well, we were at my son's preschool egg hunt for Easter.
- 56:36Easter egg.
- 56:37And this girl just starts cute little girl with red curly hair
- 56:39and she just starts climbing the little dogwood.
- 56:42And the dogwood is like this tall.
- 56:43Dogwood.
- 56:44It's the tiniest dogwood and I'm like worried about the blim,
- 56:47but...
- 56:48Yeah, that's...
- 56:49But I'm like, I got to tell a kid not to climb a tree.
- 56:50That is like...
- 56:51That is the line.
- 56:52Who the tree is?
- 56:53No.
- 56:54I'm like, hey, here's a better tree.
- 56:55So the pastor of this...
- 56:57It's like, you know, preschool in the church.
- 56:59The pastor asked us to come over and tell her
- 57:00that we're not climbing the tree and I was like,
- 57:02oh, I was not the adult here.
- 57:05We're not climbing that tree.
- 57:07Yeah, tree climbing.
- 57:08That's a very freeing adventure.
- 57:10That's what I think that's what fashion's about to me
- 57:12is what gives you the sense of adventure.
- 57:15Yeah.
- 57:16What can I do in this outfit?
- 57:17Who could I be in this outfit?
- 57:18And it would make...
- 57:19I think it makes you more...
- 57:20As you were saying, Reggie,
- 57:21it makes you more improv-ready.
- 57:23Because you're like at the...
- 57:24You're like on it.
- 57:25Yeah, yeah.
- 57:26You can't do anything.
- 57:27Right.
- 57:28You're not like feeling...
- 57:29Whatever you're going to throw at me is restricted.
- 57:30This outfit is ready for whatever you're going to throw at me.
- 57:32Yes.
- 57:33I'm ready.
- 57:34Let's do it.
- 57:35Yeah.
- 57:36And I get that.
- 57:37It's incredible.
- 57:38Like no matter where we put you,
- 57:39you like are always at ease.
- 57:41It's something that...
- 57:42Well, let me explain to you.
- 57:43It's because of what I'm wearing.
- 57:44Let me explain to you in how Reggie shops.
- 57:45It's because Reggie's like grounded in his style.
- 57:48Oh, he is.
- 57:49When we went shopping, I brought my Megan,
- 57:52and she did my shopping,
- 57:53and I tried on things.
- 57:54Reggie's not the shop in himself.
- 57:56He's got like 45 hangers over his arm.
- 57:58He's like...
- 57:59Reggie, Reggie, you ain't fall at me.
- 58:01He was set in like a tenth of the time in Iowa.
- 58:04Yeah.
- 58:05He's got a formula.
- 58:06He's figured it out,
- 58:07and you're like looking at it,
- 58:09like it's a quantum mechanic.
- 58:11Which I relate to.
- 58:13I just like my liking.
- 58:15What is the meaning of this khaki pants?
- 58:18And then you're having a decide
- 58:19where they're going to spend the $200
- 58:21on like the plain khaki pants.
- 58:23Dude, that's totally you.
- 58:24I mean, it's like, wait.
- 58:25What's...
- 58:26What kind of vibe to khaki pants at all?
- 58:28And what do you...
- 58:29What's Jim Z?
- 58:30Things about khaki pants.
- 58:31Yeah.
- 58:32How do you shop?
- 58:33Because you always look good.
- 58:35There's this line from the blind side,
- 58:38and it's Sandra Bullock,
- 58:40and she's like, well, thank you.
- 58:42She's like walking big mic into the store,
- 58:44and she's like, well, if you don't love it on the hanger,
- 58:46you're not going to love it when you're at home.
- 58:48And that's kind of...
- 58:49So just fine with your love.
- 58:51Yeah, I also like...
- 58:54I see it if I was like,
- 58:56there's different ways.
- 58:58There's like clothes you can wear,
- 59:00and you're like, okay, this is safe.
- 59:02There's clothes I could wear when, like, I'm playing a bit.
- 59:05Or we're like going out, like, can they mention earlier?
- 59:07Like when you're putting your colored wig.
- 59:09Yeah, when I wear my colored wig out to the ballers.
- 59:11That's not a joke, that really happened.
- 59:13That did happen.
- 59:14So, yeah, I just...
- 59:15See, you're like...
- 59:16I think y'all go similar.
- 59:18You find drawn to it.
- 59:19Yeah.
- 59:20You love it.
- 59:21And that's what I do.
- 59:22I look at it on the hanger, and I'm like,
- 59:23ooh, and I usually can tell when I first see something.
- 59:26I'm sure you're the same way.
- 59:27Yeah.
- 59:28If that's gonna look good on you.
- 59:29I also...
- 59:30It's all about the fit after that.
- 59:31Like clothes, body shapes.
- 59:32Yeah, that all plays a picture.
- 59:34But like, you're wearing the clothes.
- 59:35Like, the clothes aren't wearing you.
- 59:37That's true.
- 59:38So, like, if...
- 59:39Or are they...
- 59:40Or are they?
- 59:41Or are they...
- 59:42I don't know.
- 59:43No, I think clothes feel like they wear me.
- 59:45Yeah.
- 59:46You know, like, I feel like I'm just, like, behind it.
- 59:47Yeah.
- 59:48Instead of in it.
- 59:49You know, like, I'm just, like, in front of me somehow.
- 59:51I understand.
- 59:52This is how I think.
- 59:53This is what's messed up.
- 59:54This is what my brain...
- 59:55This is what my mom thinks.
- 59:56My mom has such, like, an existential crisis right now.
- 59:58We love her mom.
- 59:59Like, shopping.
- 1:00:00And so, I'm just like, mom, like, wherever you want.
- 1:00:02And now, she's wearing, like, the hair scarves down over there.
- 1:00:05Yeah.
- 1:00:06She looks like a Billy badass, like, in there right now.
- 1:00:08Yeah, she's five.
- 1:00:09She's got to get her back in here for a long time.
- 1:00:11We do.
- 1:00:12Star's great.
- 1:00:13But yeah, I think, like...
- 1:00:14I don't know.
- 1:00:15I don't think too deep.
- 1:00:16Oh, man.
- 1:00:17Just try something already, advice.
- 1:00:18Is that it?
- 1:00:19No, that is great advice.
- 1:00:20Yeah.
- 1:00:21But I don't know if it's possible.
- 1:00:22It's very cliché that she's already...
- 1:00:23Yeah.
- 1:00:24It's very cliché that she's already...
- 1:00:25It's very cliché that she's already...
- 1:00:27And thinking, I think, therefore, I am.
- 1:00:29Yeah.
- 1:00:30Yeah.
- 1:00:31Beautiful.
- 1:00:32Oh, shit, man.
- 1:00:33I need to do some more thinking about the thinking.
- 1:00:34Let's do that.
- 1:00:35Have I thought about this thinking hard enough?
- 1:00:37Do you think?
- 1:00:38Maybe you should improv next time you wear clothes.
- 1:00:40No, actually.
- 1:00:41What?
- 1:00:42What a great...
- 1:00:43That's a great, what a statement.
- 1:00:45What if you improv when you go to try on clothes?
- 1:00:49I like this, actually.
- 1:00:50Just totally...
- 1:00:51But I'll get stitched right.
- 1:00:52Throw away everything you want.
- 1:00:54No, you won't.
- 1:00:55No.
- 1:00:56I'll go the other way.
- 1:00:57And my mom and I have always...
- 1:00:58I grew up in the theater.
- 1:00:59So we...
- 1:01:00It's like...
- 1:01:01Have a bunch of things that were like...
- 1:01:03Yeah, I could totally wear that.
- 1:01:04But it's like...
- 1:01:05It is a different character.
- 1:01:06It's like a flavor of me...
- 1:01:07And if you wake up, you're not going with that character.
- 1:01:09Yeah.
- 1:01:10But the problem is I'm so really wake up with the character.
- 1:01:12Right.
- 1:01:13I'm like...
- 1:01:14I built a closet for a bunch of me's that...
- 1:01:15Oh my god, that's not me today.
- 1:01:17Is anyone with improv?
- 1:01:18You don't neglect?
- 1:01:19You just go.
- 1:01:20No negate.
- 1:01:21No negate.
- 1:01:22You don't neglect.
- 1:01:23You don't neglect.
- 1:01:24You don't neglect.
- 1:01:25You don't neglect.
- 1:01:26Maybe you just go.
- 1:01:27Maybe you just go.
- 1:01:28Maybe you just go.
- 1:01:29Maybe you just go.
- 1:01:30Maybe you just go.
- 1:01:31Maybe you just go.
- 1:01:32We say this thing in our house.
- 1:01:33It's from the Disney Channel original movie,
- 1:01:35Brink.
- 1:01:36I think you're familiar.
- 1:01:37And there's a scene.
- 1:01:38He's like a X-games.
- 1:01:39Yeah.
- 1:01:40I'm giving too many details.
- 1:01:41Happen these are going to be wrong.
- 1:01:42But he's like a skater dude from the 90s.
- 1:01:46And there's a villain skater dude.
- 1:01:48And they've got weird sexual tension
- 1:01:50that nobody talks about because it's Disney Channel,
- 1:01:52whatever.
- 1:01:53But he's like in the middle of a competitive event.
- 1:01:55Because it's Disney Channel.
- 1:01:56And he's not doing well.
- 1:01:57And his little like brat kid sister comes up to him
- 1:02:00and he's she's like,
- 1:02:01skate better.
- 1:02:02And then he's like,
- 1:02:03skate better.
- 1:02:04And then he's like,
- 1:02:05skate better.
- 1:02:06And if it weren't that easy.
- 1:02:07And if it weren't that easy.
- 1:02:08Oh, that's awesome.
- 1:02:09Great idea.
- 1:02:10But no, it's really good advice.
- 1:02:12I'm bad at advice.
- 1:02:14I'm bad at taking it.
- 1:02:15I'm bad at advice too.
- 1:02:16No, I'm just like I can't.
- 1:02:18But I'm struggling as all I'm trying to do.
- 1:02:20So is it important to know the line
- 1:02:22between improv and delusion?
- 1:02:24Because wouldn't an inventor
- 1:02:26inventing something seem delusional?
- 1:02:28Yes.
- 1:02:29Absolutely.
- 1:02:30Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:02:31So I'm like,
- 1:02:32if you walk into a client meeting
- 1:02:33and you have an idea that is huge
- 1:02:36and someone could say,
- 1:02:37that's delusional.
- 1:02:38Let's get real.
- 1:02:39What can we really expect to see?
- 1:02:41And that's fine.
- 1:02:42Like I think that we've been in a data driven
- 1:02:44economy and market.
- 1:02:47It's just been everyone's just feeding off the data.
- 1:02:49But what is that level of like delusion
- 1:02:52that takes us to the next level?
- 1:02:54You know, like,
- 1:02:55is there a better way to
- 1:02:57have an economy versus capitalism?
- 1:02:58That is true.
- 1:02:59Is there a better way to
- 1:03:01have a company maybe owned by the employees?
- 1:03:04So it's like that improv.
- 1:03:07The play can be used in business, I think.
- 1:03:10What if play is a part of business
- 1:03:12to push us to the next level?
- 1:03:15The imaginative sci-fi level
- 1:03:19where, you know, they say,
- 1:03:20when she sees something in sci-fi,
- 1:03:21it's only a matter of time before it.
- 1:03:22Yeah.
- 1:03:23It becomes a reality
- 1:03:24because someone is improving and delusional
- 1:03:26that someone would have a phone
- 1:03:28that they can connect with the internet
- 1:03:30and do all this power.
- 1:03:32I would say, what if delusion really is just
- 1:03:34the precursor to improv
- 1:03:36and then ultimately success?
- 1:03:38Yeah.
- 1:03:39Because most things that we
- 1:03:41become a commonplace, like cell phones,
- 1:03:44like cars,
- 1:03:46and like the first person to see a car,
- 1:03:47like, what?
- 1:03:48Totally. Like, yeah,
- 1:03:49like all of these things
- 1:03:51started off as someone's delusional idea
- 1:03:54that they didn't give up on.
- 1:03:55Exactly.
- 1:03:56So I'm like,
- 1:03:57I like delusions.
- 1:03:58I like delusions.
- 1:03:59I embody the improv.
- 1:04:01I think delusion and improv can help change the world.
- 1:04:05You just can't give up on it.
- 1:04:07What if we start with delusion
- 1:04:09and we back into reality instead of like
- 1:04:11starting with reality
- 1:04:12and hopefully we get to something great?
- 1:04:13Yeah.
- 1:04:14You want to hit positive.
- 1:04:15Yeah.
- 1:04:16The reality is like a brick.
- 1:04:17Yeah, a brick.
- 1:04:18They say it fell faster.
- 1:04:19Like, get the big delusional idea out there
- 1:04:21and see how it floats.
- 1:04:22Yeah.
- 1:04:23You know?
- 1:04:24See?
- 1:04:25Someone had this idea.
- 1:04:26They say the big hairy idea, right?
- 1:04:27Yeah.
- 1:04:28I like delusion better.
- 1:04:29Yeah.
- 1:04:30Be crazy.
- 1:04:31Be constantly insane about this.
- 1:04:33Wow.
- 1:04:34We should change our little subliner
- 1:04:37byline to 40-hards,
- 1:04:39the delusional creative company.
- 1:04:41I love it.
- 1:04:43I think too.
- 1:04:44Where's the line?
- 1:04:45Delusion's a grandeur.
- 1:04:46Done.
- 1:04:47Delusion's a grandeur.
- 1:04:48Done.
- 1:04:50Done.
- 1:04:51I love that.
- 1:04:52So true.
- 1:04:53It's a little scary.
- 1:04:54On that note,
- 1:04:56I'm going to wrap us up.

- 1:05:00if this is your kind of vibe,
