- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello all, and welcome into this edition of the Checho Daily.
- 0:13Andrew Dicheco here with day seventeen of Eagles' training camp
- 0:17news and observations. And it was an eventful day that
- 0:19at the Overcare Complex. Practice covered about an hour and
- 0:23forty nine minutes. The Eagles were fully padded, and it
- 0:27was an unseasonably cool day, which is always a good
- 0:31thing at this time of the year, and you'll take
- 0:33it where you can get it. But let's get to
- 0:36the notes in terms of the practice status and not
- 0:40practicing on Tuesday.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Wide receiver A J.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Brown with the hamstring, cornerback Toery Castro Fields with the hamstring,
- 0:46safety Lewis Scene with the groin, guard Landon Dickerson knee,
- 0:50cornerback Brandon Johnson groin, tackle Jordan Mylotta concussion, quarterback Tanner
- 0:55McKee finger, and wide receiver DeVante Smith groin. All of
- 0:59the aforemats did not practice today.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Just some notes.
- 1:03Speaker 1: My understanding is that the team is being conservative with
- 1:06some of the players to ensure they're ready to go
- 1:08in preparation for Week one, which is always the primary objective,
- 1:11especially around this time of the year leading into the
- 1:13final preseason game. Next week is where things really start
- 1:18to pick up, and that's where you need your marquee
- 1:20players operating at peak capacity if possible. Also a note
- 1:25on Tanner McKee's finger. It's the finger almet. It's going
- 1:30to be a non surgical issue there, So rest assured
- 1:34Tanner McKee is that's nothing that should carry over for
- 1:39too much, for too long.
- 1:41Speaker 2: You never know.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And then another injury note or notes. Rookie Drew mccooble
- 1:46walked off with a trainer early into the session and
- 1:48he didn't return. It looked like he sustained a hamstring
- 1:52injury during one on ones. Now there are one on
- 1:54ones going on at different portions of the field.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Safeties and.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Tight ends were on one side, and then on the
- 2:02other side there were wide receivers and defensive backs. So
- 2:06I was mostly focused on the wide receiver DBS, but
- 2:09I glanced over and saw because I want to see
- 2:12Macooba in those reps, and it looked like it was
- 2:14a hamstring injury. He left the field with the trainer
- 2:17and did not return. And wide receiver Johnny Wilson looked
- 2:21to suffer an injury to his left leg. It looked
- 2:24like he got rolled up on by guard Brett Toath
- 2:26in the early stages of team drills. He looked to
- 2:30be in a great deal of pain and he hobbled
- 2:33off with help from a trainer, and he was later
- 2:36spotted heading inside on a cart. So we'll have to
- 2:40wait and see what the extent of that injury is
- 2:43to Johnny Wilson, we will learn more in the coming hours,
- 2:46and its certainly when the injury report for tomorrow is issued.
- 2:51Tight End Dallas got it with a groin injury. Was
- 2:54the only player with a limited designation, So talk with
- 3:00I'm gonna kind of go in sequence here. The Eagles
- 3:02open with a special teams period and they focus on
- 3:04punk coverage.
- 3:05Speaker 2: The punt returners.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Were in order, wide receiver and Iya Smith, defensive back
- 3:09Cooper Degen, and wide receiver Jahan Dotson. For those curious
- 3:13wide receiver return specialists, Avery Williams served as the personal protector.
- 3:17Speaker 2: On punt He was next up behind running.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Back will Shipley, who still has control over that role.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Then there were the one on one periods, and I'm
- 3:25not going to get into all of them.
- 3:27Speaker 1: You can find out more about that on inside the
- 3:29Birds dot Com, where you can find my comprehensive recap
- 3:32of what happened on Day seventeen, but cornerback of Doriy
- 3:36Jackson versus wide receiver Darius Cooper was a fun one.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Jackson mirrored Cooper throughout.
- 3:40Speaker 1: The route and logged a pass breakup Cooper dejen versus
- 3:44wide receiver and Ia Smith. Now that's been a fun
- 3:46one on one matchup to watch throughout the summer. Smith
- 3:49showcase short area of quickness, and he separated just enough
- 3:52from Degene on an inside outside move to bring in
- 3:55the short completion. Cornerback Quinyon Mitchell VERSU wide receiver Johan
- 3:59DAAs Dotson, who was running a stutter and go, got
- 4:04a step on Mitchell down the right side line to
- 4:06haul in the target. Cornerback Parry Nickerson versus wide receiver
- 4:11Taylor Moran, who is a rookie free agent, running a
- 4:14route that looked to be a carbon copy of the
- 4:16one that I just outlined from Smith. Moore in created
- 4:19separation and brought in the short throw. This is an
- 4:22interesting one. Cornerback jacoryan Bennett versus wide receiver John Metchi,
- 4:26the third who was wearing number eighty In case those
- 4:29haven't seen that yet, he's the newly acquired wide receiver
- 4:32from the Houston Texans Jay when Hurt's rifle to pass
- 4:35into Mechi who was running a slant, but Bennett read
- 4:37it perfectly, welcoming the new edition with the pass breakup
- 4:42and this was perhaps the most fun to watch. It
- 4:44was cornerback aj Woods versus wide receiver Giles Jackson. Jackson
- 4:48turned on the Jets and headed towards the end zone,
- 4:50pulling away from Woods, but Woods recovered enough to get
- 4:54handed to deflect the pass. But it was into the
- 4:56hands of Jackson, who was lying in the end zone,
- 4:59or at least my memory serves he was. He was,
- 5:01His momentum was carrying him down and he was. He
- 5:05was there, Johnny on the spot to catch the pass.
- 5:11Let's go to some depth chart notes. At safety without Macouba,
- 5:17it was Reed, Blanket, Chip and Sydney Brown at cornerback
- 5:21for the second consecutive day, the Eagles rolled out a
- 5:23tandem of Quinnon, Mitchell and Adori Jackson, with Dejene aligning
- 5:28at nickel as usual, But when the Eagles weren't base
- 5:31for the second consecutive day, Cooper Degene aligned at outside corner.
- 5:36That's something that there's still for this for the second day.
- 5:39This is only the second time this summer that we've
- 5:41seen Cooper Degene take outside corner reps, but it seems
- 5:45like it's something that the Eagles are trying to to
- 5:48sort of, you know, work with him on and prepare
- 5:52him in case it's necessary during the regular season. And
- 5:57Jacoreyan Bennett, he was mostly with the second team alongside
- 6:00rookie mc McWilliams, but he did eventually mix in with
- 6:03the first unit later in the session, the linebacker pairing
- 6:06with Zach Bonne and Jeremiah Trotter Junior to start, though
- 6:09rookie Jahad Campbell also saw his fair share with the ones.
- 6:13With the Eagles light arm receiver on Tuesday, and this
- 6:16is not including Johnny Wilson in this because he got
- 6:18injured so late so early in the session. It was
- 6:21primarily Johan Dotson, Darius Cooper, and Naiah Smith and John Metchie.
- 6:25The third even saw a handful of snaps with the
- 6:28first unit and without Tanner McKee who has that finger injury,
- 6:32rookie Kyle McCord not third year pro Dorian Thompson. Robinson
- 6:36was elevated to the second team, McCord saw his most
- 6:39significant workload of the summer by a large margin, and
- 6:46without Jordan Mylott, it was veteran Matt Pryor who filled in.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Matt Pryor struggled in this one.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Jaywalks Hunt got the best of them on a subset
- 6:55of reps, and then seventh year pro Brett Toath again
- 6:59filled in at.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Left guard for Landon Dickerson.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I thought of Dori Jackson probably had one of his
- 7:05better showings in this practice. He had the pass breakup
- 7:07in one on ones which I outlined, and then he
- 7:10bowled over the rookie Cooper on a short completion which
- 7:13he read perfectly. This is what you're going to get
- 7:16from a Dori Jackson. He's a veteran corner. He's seen
- 7:19it all. He's steady, if unspectacular, but there's less variance
- 7:23with a player like that, so that's the one advantage
- 7:26that he has over some of the other players. He
- 7:29also had a nice pass break up on a short
- 7:32throat at Dallas Goddard where he sort of swarmed in
- 7:35from behind and got a hand in to break up
- 7:37the pass. MATCHI the third wasted little time in making
- 7:42his presence felt he was leaping to reel in a
- 7:45pass from Kyle mccorr down the left scene with safety
- 7:48Andre Samon coverage, and on the ensuing play MATCHI was
- 7:52unable to handle a McCord fastball. The pass was nearly
- 7:55picked off by Andre Sam who had tight coverage on
- 7:58the play. If I remember this right, the ball may
- 8:00have even clanged off of Mechi's hands and hit Sam's helmet.
- 8:03Speaker 2: It was a bang bang play.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But then there was another portion of practice where Mechi
- 8:09when he was working with the first team, when the
- 8:12first team offense was facing reserves, he pulled in a
- 8:15short completion from Hurts on the far side of the
- 8:17field with Aj Woods in coverage.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Big day for Will Shipley, the Eagle's second year of
- 8:22running back.
- 8:22Speaker 1: He put on a receiving clinic at one point later
- 8:26in practice, he snared four consecutive checkdowns from Jaywen Hurts
- 8:30and Shipley is by far the most natural pass catching
- 8:33running back that the Eagles have, and he has such
- 8:37a good feel for a situational awareness, and he's been
- 8:41a primary outlet for the different quarterbacks this summer, including
- 8:44Hurts and Tanner McKee. And I'm really interested to see
- 8:47how his role will grow in year two. There was
- 8:52a nice play during the red zone period the first
- 8:54team offense found pay dirt. It was following a misfire
- 8:58to Cooper on a comeback round with Jadori. Jackson was
- 9:01in coverage on Jay when Hurts threaded to pass the
- 9:03tight end e J. Jenkins, who was running a corner
- 9:05route in the right corner of the end zone, and
- 9:07it had red blanket ship and coverage. Hurts also through
- 9:11an interception to Nolan Smith. Hurts was looking for running
- 9:14back Saquon Barkway, but Smith, who was sinking deep in coverage,
- 9:17prevented the completion. Jacorey and Bennett also had some positive
- 9:23moments today. He stormed in to limit the damage on
- 9:26a short McCord completion of running back aj Dillon, and
- 9:28he delivered a physical thud and.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Attempted to swipe the football.
- 9:33Speaker 1: He also had inside leverage on a Hurtz misfire to Cooper.
- 9:36Bennett responded after play with a de kembe Mtumbo fingerwag.
- 9:39Speaker 2: He started to come on a little bit.
- 9:41Speaker 1: He looks to becoming more and more comfortable within the defense,
- 9:44and that's something that I'm expecting to carry over throughout
- 9:47the week. Jahad Campbell has this seek and destroy mentality,
- 9:51and for perspective, I'm going to set the scene for
- 9:53the listeners. Campbell blew up a blocking attempt from Grant
- 9:55kaw Kata, who gave his best effort. But the way
- 9:58that Campbell plays the game with a physicality and he
- 10:01just is able to kind of go full steam.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Ahead and be disruptive there. He was still able to
- 10:07tag Barkley after a minimal gain.
- 10:08Speaker 1: He also had a physical rep on tight end Nick
- 10:10Muse showcasing active hands and forced to disengage the tight end.
- 10:15I saw who did fare a little bit better at
- 10:17least on this particular play was Cameron Lattu who he
- 10:20didn't give up any ground and did his part in
- 10:22sealing off the left side on a run that I
- 10:24believe was b from aj Dillon if I'm remembering this correctly.
- 10:31The Eagles were really disruptive up front today, and it
- 10:34wasn't just Jayalen Signed, it wasn't just Nolan Smith. The
- 10:36interior as well got a consistent push throughout the morning
- 10:40and it was Jaywen, Carter, Moro Jomo and Jordan Davis.
- 10:44Jordan Davis, by the Way picked up a would be
- 10:46sack of Jaywen Hurts because of the overloaded pressure on
- 10:49this occasion that had Hunt and Smith on one side Jay
- 10:52when Hurts stepped up and Jordan Davis was right there
- 10:55to tag him. Lastly, this edge rusher hasn't talked about much,
- 11:01but O'shawn Mathis had a quietly productive day and he
- 11:04really has throughout camp. In his limited reps. He beat
- 11:08rookie Miles Hinton twice. One was a would be sack
- 11:11of McCord and the other and the play really ended
- 11:16in McCord heaving a pass that fell in complete in
- 11:20the direction of wide receiver Elijah Cooks.
- 11:22Speaker 2: He then a couple of.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Plays later eased a round Hinton, resulting in a McCord
- 11:27in interception over the middle to Tristan McCollum. Mathis also
- 11:31pressure McCord in a play that resulted in a connection
- 11:33to Cooks, who sort of shimmied around Nick Williams along
- 11:36the far sideline and the double horn sounded after Dorian
- 11:40Thompson Robinson connected with Cooks along the far sideline, with
- 11:43Keelee Ringo providing coverage on the play by the way
- 11:48based off of two practices now, I think it's fair
- 11:50to say that Keelee Ringo is fallen behind in this
- 11:54cornerback race, as there's other players who have left in
- 11:57front of him, including rookie fifth round pick mcmick Williams.
- 12:00It's something to keep an eye on leading into Friday's game.
- 12:03I'll certainly be keeping an eye on that tomorrow to
- 12:06see if the trend continues. But that is the current
- 12:09state of the Eagles cornerback position and that is what
- 12:12happened today.
- 12:13Speaker 2: In a brief podcast.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Here for the Eagles training camp Day seventeen. My comprehensive
- 12:20analysis and observations from today will be found on insidethbirds
- 12:23dot com.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I'll have a
- 12:25Speaker 1: Recap of tomorrow's session, which is the final day of
- 12:28Eagles training camp tomorrow, and I'll catch you all on
- 12:31the next one.
