- 0:31story
- 0:34I appreciate it.
- 0:35I'm going to ask a quick question.
- 0:36Are you at your home place?
- 0:37Is that your decoration?
- 0:39Man, you have got a good setup.
- 0:40Well done.
- 0:41We do a lot of videos at the
- 0:43wagon we have here in New Mexico,
- 0:46but we,
- 0:46sometimes we cook just right here too.
- 0:48Okay.
- 0:48I love it.
- 0:50I love it.
- 0:51Now you have your hands in just about
- 0:53everything from what I understand.
- 0:55Well, they've always been busy.
- 0:58You know,
- 0:59an old man on a ranch told me
- 1:01a long time ago, he said,
- 1:02you can tell a lot about a man
- 1:03by what he wears on his head,
- 1:05what he rides,
- 1:06and how many calluses he has on his
- 1:08hands.
- 1:08He said,
- 1:09because lazy people don't get them.
- 1:11He said, you keep working long enough,
- 1:13he said, you might wear them off,
- 1:14but it'll take a while.
- 1:15Mm-hmm.
- 1:17that's that's that's uh that's rich as
- 1:19true as it gets yes it is yes
- 1:21it is uh you said that you you've
- 1:25been doing it about your whole life i'm
- 1:29the one that does a little research
- 1:30charlie doesn't but but i do and so
- 1:32you grew up with father or uncle somebody
- 1:35and and you started chuck wagon even back
- 1:38then
- 1:39Yeah, I mean,
- 1:40we was raised in southwest Oklahoma,
- 1:42right there on the banks of the Red
- 1:43River.
- 1:44And from a farm and ranch operation,
- 1:46my dad taught me what it was to
- 1:48be a cowboy and work nineteen hours a
- 1:50day.
- 1:50And my mother taught me that
- 1:52You cook what you love for the ones
- 1:53you love.
- 1:54And she started me in the kitchen when
- 1:57I was about nine years old.
- 1:59And it was really nice to be in
- 2:00there when it was twenty degrees outside
- 2:02and they're saddling up.
- 2:04But when I had to go to washing
- 2:05dishes,
- 2:06I'm thinking I'm going to get back in
- 2:07the saddle.
- 2:09But it was something I got to do
- 2:12that was more like a dream come true.
- 2:14You know,
- 2:14I worked some of the greatest old timers
- 2:16that were great cowboys.
- 2:18that stood tall as giant oak trees.
- 2:19They were like legends.
- 2:21And I got to be around them every
- 2:22day.
- 2:23I learned some of the values that they
- 2:24taught me,
- 2:25not only about horses and cattle,
- 2:27but also about God, country, and people.
- 2:30And we try to instill that in whatever
- 2:32we do.
- 2:33And I don't know,
- 2:34went to rodeo in there for a while
- 2:37and I quit cooking when I was about
- 2:39nineteen to thirty.
- 2:40What kind of rodeo?
- 2:44I rode bulls forever, you know.
- 2:46Good Lord blessed me.
- 2:47I didn't get hurt, made a good living.
- 2:49And, um,
- 2:50then I went to guide nail counters in
- 2:52the heel of wilderness and look,
- 2:53you got me interested on bull right now.
- 2:56So let's, let's, let's, let's pause.
- 2:58What, what, uh, what,
- 3:00how do you go from,
- 3:02from cooking and making some delicious
- 3:06foods and you're having a great time and
- 3:07you're loving that too.
- 3:09Hey,
- 3:09let me go get on this couple thousand
- 3:11pound bull and see if he can kick
- 3:13my butt.
- 3:14Well,
- 3:14a lot of it was my oldest brother.
- 3:15An oldest brother will help a younger
- 3:17brother get killed off at any time in
- 3:18his life if he can.
- 3:19Amen.
- 3:22He started me practicing when I was about
- 3:24nine or ten years old,
- 3:25but he'd just tie your feet under
- 3:27something like you'd catch an old cow out
- 3:29in the pasture or steer it.
- 3:31he'd tie your feet under them you wouldn't
- 3:32even have nothing to hang on to and
- 3:33i said i don't think this is the
- 3:34way they do it randy and he said
- 3:35it'll teach you balance well after you get
- 3:38your head kicked in about twenty times you
- 3:40learn either some balance or this ain't
- 3:42your job no more you know but um
- 3:44i don't know if i did a good
- 3:45job as an older brother now based on
- 3:47what randy did with him i think i
- 3:50failed my brother a little bit all right
- 3:52he was doing all right yeah
- 3:54He was a great cowboy too,
- 3:56a great horse trainer.
- 3:58They would always saddle up a lot of
- 3:59times when I was young and he wouldn't
- 4:01let me go with some of his and
- 4:02his friends.
- 4:03And I got up and lost to the
- 4:04barn one time and they was riding out
- 4:06and shot his horse in the butt with
- 4:07BB gun.
- 4:08He got bucked off and I thought it
- 4:09was a really good deal till he chased
- 4:11me down and wrote me and tied me
- 4:13upside down naked in a tree.
- 4:14And I'm,
- 4:16He said, if you tell mama,
- 4:18I'll whoop your butt.
- 4:19And I said,
- 4:19you actually think mama's going to think I
- 4:21did this to myself.
- 4:22So you need to rethink that situation.
- 4:24That is outstanding.
- 4:29I can only imagine the fun with two
- 4:32brothers on a ranch here in Oklahoma and
- 4:35just the stories that, like you just said,
- 4:37that that invokes.
- 4:39That's awesome.
- 4:40There was never a cold day.
- 4:42Yeah.
- 4:43What about,
- 4:44what about bull riding intrigued you?
- 4:46Was it, was it the challenge?
- 4:47Was it learning the skill?
- 4:49Was it just a part of what,
- 4:51what you grew up around?
- 4:52Well, my dad, uh, they're in Hollis,
- 4:54Oklahoma.
- 4:55They used,
- 4:55we had a rodeo for like sixty four
- 4:57years and my dad was all around cowboy
- 4:59in nineteen fifty two.
- 5:01my oldest brother Randy was in seventy two
- 5:04and I was in eighty two.
- 5:05You know,
- 5:06it's something that was sort of in our
- 5:07blood.
- 5:07We grew up riding bucking horses,
- 5:09you know, all the time anyway.
- 5:11But I always just admired the bull riders
- 5:14that were back then when I was eighteen,
- 5:16nineteen years old, twenty, you know,
- 5:17and that was Jim Shoulders and Freckles
- 5:19Brown, Larry Mahan, Mertis Deitman.
- 5:21You know,
- 5:22it wasn't so much about the big money
- 5:24that they have now.
- 5:25It was about a
- 5:26A family,
- 5:27a group of people that come together and
- 5:28they love to ride bulls and they can
- 5:30knock hair off of them if they wanted
- 5:31to.
- 5:33that's that's impressive i love just the
- 5:36brotherhood that you just spoke to the
- 5:37fact that you can drop all those names
- 5:39yeah and that's that's very much what i
- 5:42see out of the that the cowboy culture
- 5:44if you will it's yes there's money to
- 5:47be made now and with all those bigger
- 5:48ones but the fact that y'all still stick
- 5:51together and and my mother she uh when
- 5:54we were growing up eight seconds was like
- 5:55one of her favorite movies i couldn't tell
- 5:58you the number of times i've had to
- 5:59sit that and watch that with her and
- 6:00It's a great movie.
- 6:03She always gets upset, though,
- 6:04that they left off his life after the
- 6:06rodeo when he kind of gave his life
- 6:08to the Lord and all that.
- 6:08She's like, they left off the good part.
- 6:10You know,
- 6:10you got to hear from mom about that
- 6:12part.
- 6:12But it's just Lane Frost had such a
- 6:14unique.
- 6:15I think he almost made it common.
- 6:17And so for you to rattle off those
- 6:19names that well and just the brotherhood
- 6:20that y'all have there,
- 6:21that's just a beautiful thing.
- 6:22So a lot of people just don't understand.
- 6:25It was it was not so much about
- 6:26the money.
- 6:27Sure, I made a living at it.
- 6:28And that was back in the eighties.
- 6:30But when my dad won that in fifty
- 6:32two,
- 6:33he got a big old silver cup trophy,
- 6:34you know, said all around champion cowboy.
- 6:37And he got seventeen dollars when my
- 6:39brother won it.
- 6:40He won a buckle and two hundred and
- 6:42forty two dollars.
- 6:43And when I won it,
- 6:44I won a buckle and eight hundred and
- 6:45forty two dollars, you know.
- 6:46But it was, I don't know,
- 6:48I think it's something that gets in your
- 6:50blood that you,
- 6:52I won't say that I craved it all
- 6:54the time,
- 6:54but I quit riding when I was thirty
- 6:56seven because the ground got really hard.
- 6:59I could still ride bulls,
- 7:00but I couldn't bounce anymore.
- 7:04I sort of looked like a yard dart
- 7:05out there in the ground.
- 7:07Have you ever tried to ride a bull
- 7:08or anything?
- 7:11Heck no.
- 7:11Look, now,
- 7:11I've ridden horses my whole life.
- 7:13Nope, doesn't count.
- 7:15And I've gotten bucked off a horse.
- 7:18But I ain't never tried to get on
- 7:20a bull.
- 7:20We tried to ride an old steer,
- 7:22and it was still in the chute.
- 7:25When we,
- 7:26me and Jonathan Lee in high school,
- 7:28his nickname was cowboy.
- 7:29That was buddy virus.
- 7:30We grew up and, uh,
- 7:32it did not go well.
- 7:32Uh,
- 7:33and I knew right then I had all
- 7:35the respect for him by that ever did
- 7:36it because I got about a half leg
- 7:39on and that was it.
- 7:40So anyhow, that's, that's my story.
- 7:43That's all I got.
- 7:44So.
- 7:44There was an old man explained it to
- 7:46me that was a judge for rodeos many
- 7:48years ago.
- 7:49And he'd tell them young kids, I'd say,
- 7:51you know, I'm get older.
- 7:52I'm be a bull rider.
- 7:53And he said,
- 7:54get your mouth full of marbles and put
- 7:55them in your mouth.
- 7:56And he said,
- 7:57every time you get on once spit a
- 7:58marble out.
- 7:59He said, when you run out of marbles,
- 8:01he said, you'll be out.
- 8:01You'll be a bull rider.
- 8:02He said,
- 8:02cause you ain't got nothing left in your
- 8:04brain no more.
- 8:08It's just old cowboy wisdom.
- 8:10They just knew what to do with it.
- 8:11That's the truth.
- 8:12That's it.
- 8:12That's it.
- 8:12That's the truth.
- 8:13Look, I got thrown off of one horse.
- 8:16You were done.
- 8:16And I was good.
- 8:19That's awesome.
- 8:20Look, you have,
- 8:21from the chuck wagon side of things,
- 8:23you've kind of made a name for yourself
- 8:25with all things that.
- 8:27And then that parlays into some of the
- 8:29TV stuff.
- 8:30You've been on several different shows
- 8:31with Bobby Flay and the Food Network and
- 8:33stuff.
- 8:34And so we had a guest on.
- 8:36We had Cary Bringle on,
- 8:37Peg Leg Porker Barbecue.
- 8:39Yeah, yeah.
- 8:40And I had to give him a hard
- 8:41time.
- 8:42I said,
- 8:42do you still remember the recipe you made?
- 8:44And he goes, oh, yeah.
- 8:45Like,
- 8:45he knew exactly what he did to get
- 8:46kicked off.
- 8:46Yeah.
- 8:47I think that was the Barbecue Showdown.
- 8:48Yeah, I was there.
- 8:50uh chop grill master because he was on
- 8:53the same year i was out there right
- 8:55right do you look back at stuff like
- 8:57that and think hey i wish i had
- 8:59done this done that differently or do you
- 9:01just roll with it because of the fun
- 9:02you had and you got to meet some
- 9:04great folks and keep on going do you
- 9:05ever think back about it
- 9:07I do.
- 9:08I mean, when, when we did that, they,
- 9:09they took people that they call shifts and
- 9:13one, and one cowboy,
- 9:14because they were filming at old Tucson at
- 9:17the old where they filmed high Chaparral,
- 9:19the old Western series.
- 9:20And they wanted somebody to be sort of,
- 9:22you know,
- 9:22cowboy and play the part out there.
- 9:25They didn't think I'd go far,
- 9:26but I went to the finals and, um,
- 9:29ended up getting beat in the finals,
- 9:31but it was all right.
- 9:33Um, but.
- 9:34You look back,
- 9:35especially the night after the finals,
- 9:37and you think, what if, coulda, shoulda,
- 9:39woulda, you know?
- 9:41But if you let stuff like that get
- 9:42in your mind and stay,
- 9:43it'll haunt you forever.
- 9:45Sure.
- 9:45You know, you go out there every day,
- 9:47whatever you're doing in life,
- 9:48and you put forth your best effort,
- 9:49give it all you got,
- 9:51you don't have no regrets.
- 9:52You know, you just keep going.
- 9:56wisdom i'm telling you the cowboys have
- 9:58the best wisdom great it's just the
- 10:00cowboys look tell me another profession
- 10:03that sacrifices what they do have a love
- 10:06for nature because they are so involved in
- 10:09it they have just the the animal world
- 10:12that they're involved in and then you have
- 10:13to learn from it and the cowboy wisdom
- 10:16is just a whole separate like it's it's
- 10:19its own own thing so
- 10:21I think one of the things I love
- 10:22the most about that is how simple it
- 10:24is, though.
- 10:25One hundred percent.
- 10:26Yeah.
- 10:26It's just true.
- 10:27You know,
- 10:28I told a judge out there at CHOP
- 10:30that time, Mark Murphy, he said, you know,
- 10:33whatever we put in that basket,
- 10:35and you don't even know what it is,
- 10:36but you just keep on cooking it.
- 10:38And he said, you make it simple.
- 10:39I said, life is simple.
- 10:41I said,
- 10:41y'all trying to complicate it with food.
- 10:43I said,
- 10:43we don't do that where I'm from.
- 10:44Yeah.
- 10:47I love it.
- 10:51Amen.
- 10:53My favorite thing of yours,
- 10:55and I'm going to dip all the way
- 10:56in.
- 10:56This is where I'm going to fangirl a
- 10:57little bit.
- 10:57I've been excited about this show for a
- 10:59long time.
- 10:59I'm sorry.
- 11:01So your cat head biscuits.
- 11:04Yeah.
- 11:07i would the other day i was asking
- 11:09my students if i could know facts about
- 11:12my life looking back and i grew up
- 11:15in the construction world and i was like
- 11:16the the number of board feet that i've
- 11:18cut through table saw i'd love to know
- 11:20that
- 11:23How did you even have a guesstimation of
- 11:24the number of cat head biscuits or any
- 11:26biscuit really that you've made in a cast
- 11:29iron skillet?
- 11:29Like that is no, we, uh, you,
- 11:33you couldn't count them.
- 11:34You know,
- 11:35you could line people up from one end
- 11:36of the United States to the other and
- 11:38still wouldn't be, uh,
- 11:39I got them out ranked on biscuits because
- 11:41there was a festival we did for seven
- 11:43years straight in Missouri.
- 11:46Uh,
- 11:46and I would make two hundred biscuits
- 11:49every morning for that festival, you know,
- 11:52and then time you do that seven days
- 11:54a week for seven weeks,
- 11:55that's a lot of biscuits.
- 11:57Then you take in thirty eight years of
- 11:58cooking in a Dutch oven and making
- 12:00biscuits nearly every meal you cooked.
- 12:02I don't even eat a biscuit anymore.
- 12:04I was going to ask that.
- 12:05Is that have you have you weaned yourself
- 12:07off of it?
- 12:07You just ran yourself dry.
- 12:09Yeah, I mean,
- 12:10we did a video this week about
- 12:14It's called the Cowboy Biscuit Bible.
- 12:16That'll come out in a couple of weeks.
- 12:17And it's about the biscuits that we've
- 12:20made that I really thought were the
- 12:21favorites.
- 12:21And, you know, it was a sourdough biscuit,
- 12:23a cat head biscuit,
- 12:24the two ingredient biscuits.
- 12:28if I'm going to go in here in
- 12:29the house and make some biscuits for me
- 12:31and Shannon,
- 12:32I'm going to get a whack them can
- 12:33and I'm going to open them up and
- 12:35I'm going to whack them.
- 12:35That's right.
- 12:36You know, that's right.
- 12:38Now does she make you do it?
- 12:40Cause my wife won't open the can.
- 12:41She doesn't like the little pop at the
- 12:42end.
- 12:42I have to do that.
- 12:43Okay, good.
- 12:45There you go.
- 12:46Well done.
- 12:47That is fantastic.
- 12:48You've got a show coming out.
- 12:51Uh, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 12:52Cast iron cowboy.
- 12:53yes sir is that right on the outdoor
- 12:55channel yeah uh what's the premise of that
- 12:57are you just cooking is it a cooking
- 12:59show is it outdoor all things outdoor show
- 13:02western show where we what's the
- 13:03background on that you know we uh we
- 13:06dreamed this up seven years ago
- 13:09And there was a producer out of California
- 13:11called me,
- 13:11and we get a lot of producers that
- 13:13call, and I usually tell them,
- 13:15you're a car salesman.
- 13:17Y'all have a good day.
- 13:18Bye, and hang up on them.
- 13:20And this guy was persistent.
- 13:21He just kept calling back, and he said,
- 13:25if you could have any show on any
- 13:26network, what would it be?
- 13:28And I told him sort of the premise
- 13:30of what we wanted out of it,
- 13:31which is to highlight the American cowboy
- 13:33culture.
- 13:34the american rancher across the united
- 13:36states and show their history the way that
- 13:39they raise beef what they got to do
- 13:41to get it done and then usually we
- 13:43cook a recipe that's either been with that
- 13:46family or something that we really think
- 13:48ties into that ranch whether it's their
- 13:50beef or something that they're raising and
- 13:52uh we never did want it men's sham
- 13:54to be about us we wanted to show
- 13:57some of these more historic places i mean
- 14:01One of the ranches where we start the
- 14:03first season is the J.A.
- 14:05Ranch there by Clarendon, Texas.
- 14:06It's the birthplace of Charles Goodnight
- 14:09to where he invented the chuck wagon,
- 14:12to some family-owned ranches in Nebraska,
- 14:15to the Bighorn Basin there in Wyoming.
- 14:20One of the most iconic ranches in Nevada,
- 14:22the Spanish Ranch in Maggie Creek.
- 14:24Some ranches, twenty thousand acres,
- 14:26some of them,
- 14:26seven hundred and fifty thousand acres.
- 14:28You know,
- 14:29but when you go from ninety one degrees
- 14:31to one hundred and one degrees to three
- 14:33below zero, you know,
- 14:34and you
- 14:35But if they can work cattle in it,
- 14:38we can cook in it.
- 14:39And I think that's what we're trying to
- 14:40get across.
- 14:41But there's a message there for everybody
- 14:43in the show, and that is, hey,
- 14:45we're going to keep it simple.
- 14:46We're going to feed cowboys just the same
- 14:48way old Cook did going down the trail.
- 14:50We just have a lot better grocery store
- 14:51than he used to.
- 14:52That's exactly right.
- 14:54Putting a little nice to have a pantry
- 14:55up to, isn't it?
- 14:56Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 14:58That's great, man.
- 14:59That's great.
- 15:00So –
- 15:02It seems like you've taken your career
- 15:05from being a cowboy to turning it back
- 15:09into being able to tell stories and
- 15:15telling other people's stories,
- 15:17which really intrigues me because I
- 15:21started my restaurant to become the Nike
- 15:24of barbecue.
- 15:26And to me,
- 15:27that means that we help people
- 15:30Yeah.
- 15:30Right.
- 15:30Nike helps people run faster and be
- 15:33stronger, work out harder,
- 15:34rejuvenate to work out harder and better
- 15:36the next day.
- 15:37So we took up that slogan as as
- 15:40to help build and grow community through
- 15:43storytelling, barbecue and hospitality.
- 15:47So how how are you going to take
- 15:52what you've started in this new show and
- 15:55continuously grow that to really kind of
- 15:58help grow your community?
- 15:59Well, you know,
- 16:01a lot of people see a cowboy as
- 16:04something they've seen in a Western movie,
- 16:06you know,
- 16:06something that maybe they've seen pictures
- 16:09of.
- 16:10I did an interview not long ago with
- 16:11a lady out of Chicago, and she said,
- 16:13you know,
- 16:13your kind of people are dying out.
- 16:16It doesn't really offend me,
- 16:17but I want to know what kind of
- 16:18people them are.
- 16:19I said, ma'am, we're not dying out.
- 16:21You just can't see us from the interstate
- 16:23going seventy miles an hour.
- 16:24We're still out there.
- 16:25If there's cows and there's cowboys and
- 16:28there's remote country,
- 16:29there's an old cook somewhere.
- 16:31And, you know,
- 16:32the good Lord has blessed me and Shan
- 16:35so much.
- 16:35We get to do what we want to
- 16:36do.
- 16:37And I get to do it with the
- 16:38one I love more than anything every day.
- 16:40And that is either create content about
- 16:44cooking with a chuck wagon or feeding
- 16:46cowboys on a working ranch or just telling
- 16:48somebody a story.
- 16:49Because.
- 16:51When you can relay history that started
- 16:54way back in the eighteen seventies on
- 16:55cattle drives and pass it on to another
- 16:58generation, we're preserving that history.
- 17:01And I always was taught this in my
- 17:04life.
- 17:05People read stories.
- 17:07Don't be reading the story.
- 17:08Be part of the story or what the
- 17:10story is about.
- 17:10And that's the way we try to look
- 17:12at life every day because
- 17:15Every day is a blessing.
- 17:16You know,
- 17:16if you wake up above ground and somebody
- 17:18ain't throwing dirt in your face,
- 17:19it is a great day to be alive.
- 17:21That's right.
- 17:21That's right.
- 17:22Uh,
- 17:23you quickly referenced the historical side
- 17:26of things and,
- 17:28and just in a quick chat with you
- 17:30here today,
- 17:30and then what you can easily see on
- 17:32a lot of your content,
- 17:34you have a very good hand at the
- 17:38historical side of things.
- 17:41What is it about knowing where you came
- 17:44from that helps you in this modern day
- 17:48of all the social media stuff still know
- 17:50where you want to go?
- 17:52Well,
- 17:52I think a lot of it starts back
- 17:54with don't be something you're not.
- 17:57Just be who you are and be real.
- 18:00People can spot a counterfeit a hundred
- 18:03miles away.
- 18:03Shines like a silver dollar in a goat's
- 18:05butt.
- 18:05You'll never miss it.
- 18:07But if you keep it real every day,
- 18:10and let people know that they can count
- 18:13on you to be the same every time,
- 18:15you make an impression on somebody's life.
- 18:18You know,
- 18:19we get so many people that reach out
- 18:21to us, servicemen and women, veterans,
- 18:24everybody that say, hey,
- 18:25please don't quit what you're doing.
- 18:26You're making a difference in life.
- 18:29You never know when you may have that
- 18:31chance to help somebody.
- 18:33You may not be able to shake their
- 18:34hand right then,
- 18:35But you're going to get to help them
- 18:37out one way, one form, or one fashion.
- 18:40And it's a great thing to be able
- 18:42to
- 18:43To know that you played a part in
- 18:45somebody else's life to make it better.
- 18:47And that's what we're put on earth to
- 18:49do.
- 18:49And that's what we try to do.
- 18:52We have a flag that flies with that
- 18:53Studebaker wagon and it's an eighteen
- 18:55seventy six Studebaker.
- 18:57We were shooting videos three or four
- 18:59years ago in the summer in southwest
- 19:00Oklahoma.
- 19:01And you get burned out.
- 19:03I mean,
- 19:04you start at five thirty in the morning
- 19:05by sunset.
- 19:06six thirty seven o'clock standing by a
- 19:08fire.
- 19:08It's one hundred and twenty degrees
- 19:10already.
- 19:10And it's hard to make things look
- 19:12pleasant.
- 19:12You know,
- 19:13Jen does all the all the editing,
- 19:15all the filming.
- 19:17And she's still at the computer that night
- 19:19about eleven o'clock.
- 19:20And I said,
- 19:21know darling i said i'm about to burn
- 19:23out we're gonna have to take two or
- 19:24three days off and she said i hear
- 19:26you i try to get up every morning
- 19:28about four thirty five open that laptop
- 19:31computer and answer as many comments as i
- 19:33can on youtube before we get busy and
- 19:35the first one that morning was good
- 19:37morning mr rollins this is lance corporal
- 19:39cody childers i'm currently stationed in
- 19:42afghanistan what we did today wasn't
- 19:44pleasant
- 19:45But there was nine of us gathered around
- 19:46a laptop computer,
- 19:48and you made us feel like we were
- 19:49home.
- 19:50Please don't quit what you're doing.
- 19:51You make a difference in life.
- 19:53I woke her up at five o'clock that
- 19:54morning.
- 19:55I said, we got a film, sugar.
- 19:57Somebody's counting on you.
- 19:59Three weeks later,
- 20:00I get a call from his mother,
- 20:01which I'd never known in my life.
- 20:03And she said, I'm sorry to inform you,
- 20:05but we lost Cody to an IAD.
- 20:07The flag that we flew over his service
- 20:09in Washington, D.C.,
- 20:10he wanted you to have.
- 20:12I said, ma'am, I can't take that.
- 20:13She said, you will take it.
- 20:15I tell you that story not to make
- 20:16you sad,
- 20:17but to tell you that you make a
- 20:19difference in someone's life every day.
- 20:21Be real.
- 20:22Be who you are,
- 20:23and you'll make a difference.
- 20:27That's been a great episode for everybody.
- 20:29You just nailed it all right there.
- 20:32Ken, I'm going to tell you, sir.
- 20:37I work real hard every single day to,
- 20:39to impact my community.
- 20:42Yeah.
- 20:42As,
- 20:42as hard as I possibly can every day.
- 20:45Yeah.
- 20:45And I think it's,
- 20:46I think it's as a leader,
- 20:49as a business owner, as somebody that, um,
- 20:53is passionate about their community.
- 20:56Um,
- 20:56it is our responsibility to help build and
- 21:01grow and impact every single day.
- 21:04Right.
- 21:04Yes, sir.
- 21:05Um,
- 21:06and and i just want you to know
- 21:07that uh you you are are filling me
- 21:11up with joy just sitting here talking to
- 21:14you for a minute and if anybody hadn't
- 21:17told you that you you've made their day
- 21:20you have made mine today well just i
- 21:22just i appreciate you well my daddy taught
- 21:24me a long time ago he said uh
- 21:26you know you and your brother walk into
- 21:28a pen a hundred horses and pick a
- 21:30good now he said what are you looking
- 21:33for i said a soft eye
- 21:37I can see in both of y'all from
- 21:38this far away from this computer screen,
- 21:40there's a soft eye in both of you.
- 21:42It works in dogs, people, children,
- 21:43horses, everybody.
- 21:45And if a man got a soft eye,
- 21:47he got a soft heart.
- 21:48And that's what it takes.
- 21:51Man,
- 21:51I've literally on the verge of like
- 21:53getting worked up here.
- 21:53Like goodness gracious.
- 21:55Uh, well,
- 21:57I'm going to ask you something and this
- 21:58is, this is,
- 21:59and feel free to tell me you're too
- 22:01busy,
- 22:02but I am in the process of putting
- 22:05together and nobody knows this.
- 22:06So this is crazy that I'm saying this
- 22:08on air, but, um, I'm in the process.
- 22:10Our,
- 22:11our city does not have a veterans day
- 22:12parade.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:14And I am in the process of putting
- 22:15together a Veterans Day parade for twenty
- 22:17twenty six.
- 22:18I've just submitted the application item,
- 22:20got it approved through the city.
- 22:23But I would absolutely love it if you
- 22:27would join us for that parade and help
- 22:31me cook.
- 22:32Cause at the end of it,
- 22:33we're going to do a big,
- 22:34I'll do a big cook and we'll celebrate.
- 22:36We're going to, we're actually going to,
- 22:38and we hadn't even announced it for our
- 22:40nonprofit,
- 22:41but our nonprofit is going to name the
- 22:43veteran of the year that day.
- 22:45They're going to be the grand Marshall and
- 22:47we're going to celebrate them.
- 22:48But I want to do a big cook
- 22:49afterwards at my restaurant.
- 22:53Be sure and email me and give me
- 22:54them dates.
- 22:55I'll write you down on the calendar
- 22:56brother,
- 22:57because we owe them people so much.
- 23:00Yes, sir.
- 23:00It's one of them deals.
- 23:01We just got through filming an episode not
- 23:04long ago at Fort Wainwright in Alaska.
- 23:08And I was telling him,
- 23:10I've seen all these young men,
- 23:11these soldiers, men and women, you know,
- 23:13out there on this flight line with them
- 23:15Apache helicopters.
- 23:16And I look around at myself and I'm
- 23:17thinking, what have I done with my life?
- 23:19You know, look at these, you know,
- 23:21look what they're doing.
- 23:22And I was visiting with a veteran up
- 23:23there and I was telling him that story.
- 23:25And he said, hold on there a minute,
- 23:27cowboy.
- 23:28He said,
- 23:28do you know what you and your wife
- 23:30do for people?
- 23:31You have reached so many people,
- 23:33so many veterans,
- 23:34so many servicemen and women.
- 23:35Don't think you ain't done your part.
- 23:36I said, yeah, but them kids is eighteen,
- 23:38nineteen, twenty, twenty one years old.
- 23:40I said,
- 23:41I still trying to figure out how to
- 23:42ride a bull at that time,
- 23:43not fly a helicopter.
- 23:44But now you just let us know,
- 23:48my friend,
- 23:49because it's we're always trying to to
- 23:51help that part out.
- 23:53Like I say,
- 23:54we can never pay back the debt that
- 23:55them people give to us.
- 23:56yes sir that's gorgeous i i get a
- 23:59chance to hang out with charlie quite a
- 24:00bit of his restaurant and different events
- 24:03and every time he starts talking about all
- 24:05the veterans that are in attendance i am
- 24:07not a veteran and i just i have
- 24:08to take it back on and just just
- 24:10for a second taking all of what i'm
- 24:12looking at and because they're even though
- 24:14they think oh it's just a little hometown
- 24:16get together i see it as a non-military
- 24:19member i see it a lot differently and
- 24:21i'm always thankful for what they do um
- 24:24That switching gears a little bit.
- 24:26Uh,
- 24:28I did find there was a year where
- 24:30you won the Oklahoma storyteller of the
- 24:34year.
- 24:34Was that correct?
- 24:37It was nationwide.
- 24:38It was the academy of Western artists.
- 24:43Uh, they had this deal long time ago.
- 24:47It's come back now, but, uh,
- 24:49One year I was Chuck Wagon Cook of
- 24:50the Year,
- 24:51and then one year I was Cowboy Humorist
- 24:54of the Year.
- 24:56The governor one time proclaimed me the
- 24:57official Chuck Wagon Cook of Oklahoma,
- 24:59and when he did, I asked him,
- 25:00I said,
- 25:02don't think that gives you a free ride.
- 25:04You're not going to eat free at the
- 25:05wagon.
- 25:07I was going to go back to the
- 25:09storytelling side.
- 25:10Uh,
- 25:11cause there are people that could tell
- 25:12stories well,
- 25:13and there are some people that just need
- 25:15to be consumers and just listen to the
- 25:17story and that's okay.
- 25:19What makes a quality storyteller?
- 25:23Well, to me,
- 25:24and being around all them old timers and
- 25:25especially my brother,
- 25:28most stories come from nearly someone
- 25:30getting killed every time.
- 25:31Okay.
- 25:32It was either a bad wreck or something
- 25:34like that.
- 25:35My brother talked me into more stuff than
- 25:37I ever got out of my life.
- 25:39He told me that I was going to
- 25:41be an Olympic skier one time and ski
- 25:43off the top of a two-story house and
- 25:45it wasn't going to hurt.
- 25:46And it hurt like hell when I hit
- 25:47the ground.
- 25:47It did, you know.
- 25:50He is just one of them deals.
- 25:51You, you think one of these days,
- 25:53maybe you'll outgrow the stupidity that I
- 25:55had when I said eight, nine years old,
- 25:57but you keep looking at your older brother
- 25:59and seeing what he has accomplished as a
- 26:01cowboy and horse trainer.
- 26:03You know what I'm thinking?
- 26:04Surely he knows what he's talking about,
- 26:06but I know at this time in my
- 26:08life, he didn't.
- 26:10He made a good run with it though,
- 26:11didn't he?
- 26:13I was very fortunate.
- 26:14One year I got to go to the
- 26:16storytelling festival there in a pigeon
- 26:18forge, Tennessee.
- 26:20okay and perform there and uh i met
- 26:23some great people you know and i i
- 26:26can't even remember half of them's name
- 26:27but i just love to sit on the
- 26:29porch with some of them old timers that
- 26:30was up there and not hear the stories
- 26:32that they were telling on stage but the
- 26:34stories they were telling on that porch
- 26:36right right get them out from behind the
- 26:39microphone and see what they share then
- 26:40yeah he's not as polished and not as
- 26:42pretty so that's where the real stories
- 26:44are we charlie always likes to tell us
- 26:46about the the times growing up around the
- 26:48campfire
- 26:49at the old farm.
- 26:50And I'm always like,
- 26:51that's the stories I want to hear.
- 26:53And we had a chance to hear from
- 26:55his father for one of our episodes and
- 26:57same thing.
- 26:58He just, those,
- 26:59those stories that you can't tell with the
- 27:01microphone on are,
- 27:02are the stories that really kind of drive
- 27:05and shape who we are.
- 27:05And then we clean it up just to
- 27:07present everybody.
- 27:07So we did cooking schools forever.
- 27:10Uh,
- 27:10I was trying to get more chuck wagon
- 27:12cooks for ranchers more than anything
- 27:14else.
- 27:14Uh,
- 27:16And I did one,
- 27:16one time I got brave and did one
- 27:18for an old women's class.
- 27:20And I used to just take four students.
- 27:22It was like the same aspect as it
- 27:24would be on a working ranch.
- 27:25We'd get up every morning at four o'clock.
- 27:27You'd start to work.
- 27:28You didn't quit till way after dark,
- 27:30you know.
- 27:30And one of these ladies,
- 27:32her husband had sent her down there
- 27:33because she was,
- 27:34her husband was one of the biggest game
- 27:37outfitters for wild game in probably the
- 27:40Northern hemisphere on the half end up
- 27:42there from Montana through Canada and
- 27:44Wyoming and over there.
- 27:45And he said,
- 27:47he sent me down here to learn to
- 27:48cook in a Dutch oven because we want
- 27:50to do remote camps.
- 27:51And I said,
- 27:52I'll teach you all to know, ma'am,
- 27:53in four days.
- 27:54I said,
- 27:54because I don't know a whole lot.
- 27:56She said, I'm sure you do.
- 27:58But after we'd get through every day and
- 28:00the rest of them women would be in
- 28:01a teepee asleep,
- 28:03she would be over at the wagon and
- 28:05she'd say,
- 28:06I want to know what you ain't told
- 28:07people.
- 28:08And I said, ma'am,
- 28:09them things just come out.
- 28:11I said, I don't know what they are.
- 28:12I said, if you're a chuck wagon cook,
- 28:15everybody has a plan.
- 28:17ABC ours goes to X, Y, Z.
- 28:20I said,
- 28:21cause mother nature will throw you a curve
- 28:23ball every day.
- 28:25I said, I've cooked in hail storms,
- 28:26blizzards had Latin stroke, uh, uh,
- 28:30went into the wagon many years ago on
- 28:32a ranch.
- 28:33Um, we've been drowned it out,
- 28:34blowed away snow storms,
- 28:36but I always look at it as, Hey,
- 28:39they're horseback in it.
- 28:40I'm surely cooking.
- 28:41Right.
- 28:42Right.
- 28:43Do you, when's the last time,
- 28:44or do you still go out on actual
- 28:46live ranches and do anything,
- 28:49or is it always returned to the comfort
- 28:51of a bed at night or how you
- 28:53still sharpen those skills?
- 28:54Well, especially with this series,
- 28:57since it's happened, uh, you know, we're,
- 29:00When it's filmed,
- 29:01it's like a one day process is what
- 29:03you're seeing finished product.
- 29:05But it's usually a three to four day
- 29:07event.
- 29:08And we're staying in a teepee every night.
- 29:09Now I'll tell that producer and that crew,
- 29:12and I love them dearly rabbit foot
- 29:13productions.
- 29:14I'll say, I got plenty of teepees.
- 29:15Y'all can stay out here if you want.
- 29:17And some of the more remote places that
- 29:19we've been, that have been.
- 29:20Eighty miles to the nearest town.
- 29:22They sure stay.
- 29:23They'll make it home.
- 29:25Okay.
- 29:25We just finished two episodes for the
- 29:27second season in Montana and Wyoming.
- 29:29And every night was in a teepee and
- 29:31in a bedroom, you know, and, uh,
- 29:33I can remember when I started this years
- 29:35ago and sort of made a name for
- 29:37myself cooking for ranches that you could
- 29:38stay busy from February to really October,
- 29:41you know, start in South Texas,
- 29:43go north and you'd be two hundred nights
- 29:46away from home.
- 29:47Wasn't all together, you know,
- 29:48it'd be strung out.
- 29:50And I remember coming in one time and
- 29:52I've been going about seven weeks.
- 29:53My mother said,
- 29:55Didn't you miss me?
- 29:56And I said, I sure did, mom.
- 29:57I said, but I missed a standup shower,
- 29:59sit down,
- 30:00toilet and carpet worse than that.
- 30:03A sit down toilet.
- 30:05That's a perspective I hadn't thought
- 30:07about here recently.
- 30:08That's the finer things in life.
- 30:12You, uh, you got a Mac or beans.
- 30:15Uh, I do,
- 30:16but I feel like it's not a very
- 30:17good one and, and I don't usually,
- 30:19so it's funny that we talk about the,
- 30:21the comforts that you're used to.
- 30:23Mac or beans is our, this or that.
- 30:25So I'm,
- 30:26I feel like I know your answer to
- 30:28the first half.
- 30:29You walk into barbecue restaurant or open
- 30:33Chuck wagon.
- 30:34We've got the opportunity for Mac and
- 30:36cheese or some sort of style barbecue
- 30:39baked bean.
- 30:40Which one of those two are you going
- 30:42to choose?
- 30:42I'm going to buy them both.
- 30:45Have you ever had a barbecue baked bean
- 30:47macaroni and cheese casserole?
- 30:49I haven't.
- 30:49No.
- 30:50It is pretty good dining.
- 30:51Sounds like you need to come up with
- 30:54something.
- 30:54Sounds like I need a recipe.
- 30:56The other half I wanted,
- 30:58growing up with the chuck wagon,
- 30:59you've obviously done well with that and
- 31:03not only honed that skill,
- 31:04but kept that tradition alive.
- 31:06But there's still got to be, I'm guessing,
- 31:08the comforts of cooking in the kitchen.
- 31:11So if somebody wakes you up in the
- 31:13morning and says, hey,
- 31:14you got one meal to cook today,
- 31:16you want a chuck wagon or do you
- 31:17want to go cook in a kitchen?
- 31:18Which one are you going to pick?
- 31:20I'll pick that wagon every day.
- 31:22That's where my heritage is.
- 31:25I mean,
- 31:25I feel comfortable cooking in anything in
- 31:27the world.
- 31:28But when I'm at that wagon place,
- 31:31I have the best view out my kitchen
- 31:33window every day.
- 31:34You know,
- 31:35I've seen things that people will dream
- 31:36about that most folks will never get to
- 31:39see.
- 31:41But it's something about God created this
- 31:44universe and he gave me the chance to
- 31:45be in it and to do what I
- 31:47do.
- 31:48Every day is a holiday.
- 31:51I love it.
- 31:51Every day's a holiday.
- 31:52What's, what's, uh, uh, Rodney Scott's,
- 31:55uh,
- 31:56every day is a good day and tomorrow
- 31:58will be better.
- 31:59I like that.
- 31:59Yeah.
- 32:00That just the perspective.
- 32:02I think a lot of folks that just
- 32:03have, uh, in, in the barbecue world,
- 32:06but people that cook over open fire or
- 32:08just out, you've got a different hold on,
- 32:12on nature, uh,
- 32:14because your restaurant doesn't stop
- 32:16because it rains one day.
- 32:17Cowboys don't quit because it's storming
- 32:21or whatever.
- 32:24We did an event a couple of days
- 32:25ago.
- 32:25It's called Downtown on the Farm.
- 32:29I cooked a hundred and fifty Cornish hens
- 32:32and an elote.
- 32:35We had some other dishes that some other
- 32:39guys did.
- 32:39I'm cooking away and all of a sudden
- 32:43it's...
- 32:46It's just pouring down rain.
- 32:47Pouring rain, yeah.
- 32:48Yeah.
- 32:49What's that do to your temperatures?
- 32:51Oh, it drops them.
- 32:51Yeah?
- 32:51Yeah.
- 32:52Well, he had to bring the friend on.
- 32:54That's it.
- 32:55We were just talking about schnauzers.
- 32:56Look at that little fellow right there.
- 32:57Sorry about that,
- 32:58but the guard dog sounded the alarm.
- 33:00That's right.
- 33:01Hey, I understand, yeah.
- 33:02We've got a guard dog running around here,
- 33:04too, and so we understand how they work.
- 33:08That just means they're doing their job,
- 33:09earning a keep.
- 33:10For years and years,
- 33:11we had a beagle for fourteen years,
- 33:13Shannon.
- 33:13Whichever dog we got has been a rescue.
- 33:16And that beagle, I mean,
- 33:17we have like three,
- 33:18three and a half million subscribers on
- 33:20YouTube.
- 33:20He probably had thirty three million
- 33:22before he passed away.
- 33:23People love that dog.
- 33:24And he was always sneaking about off the
- 33:26table or stealing something,
- 33:28grabbing a whole chicken,
- 33:29a stick of butter.
- 33:30You know,
- 33:32last year he passed June the seventh.
- 33:35We had to put him down.
- 33:36He had cancer.
- 33:38A week later,
- 33:39we lost a house out here in Rio
- 33:40Doce, New Mexico to a wildfire.
- 33:43The day after that,
- 33:44we started filming for this series.
- 33:46And I always told Shan, I said,
- 33:48the good Lord will never put on you
- 33:49more than you can tote.
- 33:50And I said,
- 33:52you need to throw it on me.
- 33:53You put it on me.
- 33:54And so we needed to do a tribute
- 33:57to this Beagle.
- 33:58So we had these t-shirts made called the
- 34:01Beagle Life,
- 34:02had his picture on there with some
- 34:03sunglasses.
- 34:04And we told them all the proceeds from
- 34:07these t-shirt sales will go to the Lincoln
- 34:09County Humane Society here in Rio Dos,
- 34:11New Mexico.
- 34:13I told Shan, I said,
- 34:13you better call them people and warn them.
- 34:15I said, because something happened.
- 34:17And we were there three weeks later and
- 34:19took them a check for fifty seven thousand
- 34:21dollars.
- 34:23Wow, man.
- 34:24And they were still making money for them.
- 34:26That's outstanding.
- 34:28i was i was cruising your website today
- 34:30and and i saw the t-shirt yeah and
- 34:34i was wanting to ask you that so
- 34:35i'm glad you brought that story up because
- 34:36i was trying to make the correlation to
- 34:38where you know because it was out of
- 34:40left field in your marketplace there
- 34:42you've got all your food products and the
- 34:43coffee and like i said i'm partaking of
- 34:46the coffee as soon as it arrives but
- 34:47uh i saw the shirt and i was
- 34:49like where's that going and so too you'd
- 34:51make a difference like that that's amazing
- 34:53we um
- 34:56Douglas Kean and that he had a huge
- 34:58thing with over in Southern California
- 35:01that he worked with.
- 35:03And when you realize just the impact that
- 35:05people have,
- 35:07I think so many people see y'all as
- 35:09professional chefs or TV celebrities or
- 35:11whatever it is.
- 35:12You're really just everyday people that
- 35:14are doing something a little different
- 35:16with what you've been given.
- 35:17And I just love that.
- 35:19Like, just, I've got my two dogs.
- 35:22You said stealing a stick of butter.
- 35:24Huckleberry will take a stick of butter
- 35:25right off the counter.
- 35:26He has no paper and everything.
- 35:30Y'all look, he does not care.
- 35:32I think that's beautiful.
- 35:33And,
- 35:33and for y'all to be able to turn
- 35:35around and give that, and you knew like,
- 35:36you're like,
- 35:37even in the midst of you losing your
- 35:38own home,
- 35:39that you still had the opportunity to
- 35:41think about that.
- 35:41And that just,
- 35:43I think that speaks to your selflessness.
- 35:44And I think that goes to a lot
- 35:45of what makes people who love and serve
- 35:49people,
- 35:50the ability to love and serve people.
- 35:52It's just that,
- 35:52that opportunity to be selfless.
- 35:54So well done, sir.
- 35:55Well done.
- 35:56Well, we, you know, we,
- 35:58We're here to give back.
- 36:00That's what we're going to do most of
- 36:01the time if we ever get a chance.
- 36:03As long as the good Lord's giving us
- 36:05air, we'll just keep going.
- 36:08Your guard dog,
- 36:09she or he's about to give it up.
- 36:11Oh, yeah.
- 36:12It's been a rough day for him.
- 36:14I don't know how much guarding is going
- 36:15to happen now that you've got – what's
- 36:17the little fellow's name?
- 36:19This is Major.
- 36:20Major?
- 36:20We rescued him about three years ago.
- 36:22We found him in a pound.
- 36:24Shan was –
- 36:25feeding them dogs.
- 36:26Cause nobody else was much doing anything
- 36:28for them.
- 36:28And, uh, we went back,
- 36:30check on him that night.
- 36:30Cause he's supposed to get down below
- 36:31zero.
- 36:32And somebody had thrown him in a kennel.
- 36:34He didn't have no hair.
- 36:35We didn't even know what he was.
- 36:36And we brought him home.
- 36:38And, uh,
- 36:39If she had her way,
- 36:40we'd probably have seven hundred and fifty
- 36:42dogs.
- 36:42That's right.
- 36:44But I walked in there one morning in
- 36:46the kitchen and he's just sitting there
- 36:47looking at me like,
- 36:48if you just give me one chance.
- 36:49That's it.
- 36:51Which he's really not mine.
- 36:52He's Shan's.
- 36:53He'll be mine when Shan's gone.
- 36:55Well, I'll tell you right now,
- 36:57he don't look like he's not yours.
- 37:01But he goes everywhere with us.
- 37:02You know, we didn't give him no training.
- 37:04We'll put him in a little one of
- 37:05them zip up boxes,
- 37:06slide him under a seat on an airplane.
- 37:09And he never could have done that to
- 37:10the Beagle because he weighed fifty pounds
- 37:12and he'd bite everybody he's seen.
- 37:15He's not customer-friendly most of the
- 37:16time.
- 37:17He's just doing his job.
- 37:18Don't handle that.
- 37:19That's fantastic.
- 37:20I love that.
- 37:20That is outstanding.
- 37:22Beautiful.
- 37:23Yeah, that's great.
- 37:25It's been a dog episode kind of day.
- 37:27It has.
- 37:27We've recorded a couple episodes a day,
- 37:29and so the dog stories are strong today,
- 37:32and I'm loving it.
- 37:33Makes me want to go home and pet
- 37:35on mine a little bit.
- 37:35Yeah, you know, I've always told people,
- 37:38I said,
- 37:39if you don't know the love of a
- 37:40dog, you know, you're missing out on life.
- 37:43Yeah.
- 37:43Cause they're always thinking of you
- 37:44before they're thinking of themselves.
- 37:47I tell you, I,
- 37:48that I've seen different studies and who
- 37:51knows if this stuff is real or not,
- 37:52but they talk about how important you are
- 37:55in a dog's life.
- 37:56And it makes me feel bad that I
- 37:58ever disciplined my dog when he was a
- 38:00puppy and I know it helped him, but,
- 38:01and they need correction or whatever,
- 38:03just like kids.
- 38:04Yeah.
- 38:04But man,
- 38:05when he looks at you with those big
- 38:06old sad eyes, I'm like,
- 38:08if you don't quit, like,
- 38:09please don't do this to me right now.
- 38:12So getting me right.
- 38:13Exactly.
- 38:14So I definitely get it.
- 38:17So you've got this new episode or excuse
- 38:19me, new series going with outdoor channel.
- 38:21What's on the horizon down, down the way.
- 38:23What,
- 38:24what do you ever see a period where
- 38:26you're slowing down and trying to kind of
- 38:29like,
- 38:29just enjoy the homestead or is it just
- 38:31as part of being on the go,
- 38:32just who you are?
- 38:33Well, I don't, I've seen,
- 38:36and I don't mean this bad towards anybody,
- 38:37but I've seen too many old timers in
- 38:39my country that quit what they was doing
- 38:42and they didn't live long.
- 38:44You know, I'm sixty eight years old.
- 38:46I'll try to work a twenty year old
- 38:47man to death every day.
- 38:49You know, I told Shannon the other day,
- 38:51I said,
- 38:51I got this life insurance deal figured
- 38:53out.
- 38:53She said, what do you mean?
- 38:54I said, the good Lord will help me.
- 38:55I said,
- 38:56I'm going to cook for my own funeral.
- 38:57There you go.
- 38:59There you go.
- 39:00Ninety nine years old.
- 39:01I said,
- 39:01you can charge them two hundred dollars a
- 39:03plate to get in or you can let
- 39:04them in free and charge them five hundred
- 39:06dollars a plate to get out.
- 39:07That's it.
- 39:07No difference.
- 39:08That's it.
- 39:08That's it.
- 39:10But no,
- 39:11I don't I don't I don't see really
- 39:13slowing down.
- 39:14We used to years ago when I was
- 39:16cooking by myself,
- 39:19if I wasn't on a ranch,
- 39:20I catered somewhere every weekend.
- 39:21Okay.
- 39:23Um, and we don't do much of that.
- 39:24We still do some for the veterans or
- 39:26special, uh, children's deal,
- 39:28something like that, you know, but, um,
- 39:31a lot of it, you know,
- 39:32we'll go right here in the white mountain
- 39:34wilderness behind the house and shoot a
- 39:36video, uh, with that wagon.
- 39:38And the,
- 39:39the new series sort of keeps us busy,
- 39:41but, uh,
- 39:44I just look forward to every day.
- 39:47If you're not challenged in life,
- 39:48you never change.
- 39:50I want to challenge every day.
- 39:53How much of that's rooted just in growing
- 39:55up a cowboy?
- 39:57I'd say eighty percent of it, at least.
- 40:02I got bucked off a lot when I
- 40:03was little because I didn't weigh much.
- 40:06Them old timers love to throw you on
- 40:07something that buck is Sunday afternoon
- 40:09entertainment after church.
- 40:13They taught me one thing,
- 40:14and that is you never give up.
- 40:16Right.
- 40:16You know,
- 40:17the glass is always half full here.
- 40:20It's never half empty.
- 40:24I love it.
- 40:24I love it.
- 40:25That's outstanding.
- 40:31I feel like you're mesmerized by some of
- 40:33these just little nuggets he's brought in.
- 40:35Yeah.
- 40:35I'm just, I'm just, look,
- 40:37I'm just taking it all in.
- 40:39You know, you brought up cup.
- 40:41I was in a full cup.
- 40:43I was in the restaurant the other day
- 40:44and a gentleman, uh,
- 40:47we were talking about a fundraiser that we
- 40:49had just done.
- 40:50And, and, and I had two weeks ago,
- 40:54Darian,
- 40:54I both had a beard that was six
- 40:56to nine inches longer than it is today.
- 40:59Um,
- 41:00And we shaved it off for the fundraiser
- 41:02and raised some money for this child.
- 41:04And it was a great event and loved
- 41:06it and the whole nine yards.
- 41:07And he said something to me that has
- 41:09really kind of resonated to me.
- 41:11And I still hadn't figured out exactly
- 41:12what it meant.
- 41:13But I know the good Lord above is
- 41:14trying to help me figure it out and
- 41:16I'll figure it out.
- 41:16But he kept saying that my cup was
- 41:19full.
- 41:22And as much as I understand that,
- 41:25there's part of my brain and part of
- 41:27my soul that is just not happy with
- 41:29that.
- 41:31I'm not happy with having a full cup.
- 41:34And I don't know if it's, you know,
- 41:40God will show me what he's wanting to
- 41:42show me and I'll figure that out.
- 41:44But I keep going back to the fact
- 41:46that I don't know if having a full
- 41:48cup is ever good enough.
- 41:52I kind of feel like if I walk
- 41:55into a room and I'm the smartest guy
- 41:56in the room,
- 41:57then I'm in the wrong room, right?
- 42:00Yeah, I hear you.
- 42:02If I got a full cup,
- 42:03then my cup ain't big enough.
- 42:05You know,
- 42:06that's why I always go back to a
- 42:07half a cup.
- 42:08because I'm working on filling it up every
- 42:09day.
- 42:10Yes, sir.
- 42:12Well, I think that,
- 42:13much the way you just said,
- 42:13it also gives you the opportunity to pour
- 42:15out into others.
- 42:16And what can you share?
- 42:17Whether it's with you,
- 42:19with your employees, or your children,
- 42:21or with Minutes Wisely and the stuff that
- 42:24you're able to do there with the
- 42:26nonprofit,
- 42:26and just having that opportunity to pour
- 42:29out
- 42:29The old saying,
- 42:30you can't pour from an empty cup.
- 42:32Well, to me,
- 42:33the flip side of that is if you've
- 42:34got a full cup,
- 42:35you better be pouring out.
- 42:36You better be sharing.
- 42:37You better be giving.
- 42:38You better be... And we do,
- 42:40much like he said earlier,
- 42:41we have the opportunity to serve.
- 42:43We have the opportunity to give.
- 42:44And I think some of us are just
- 42:47blessed a little bit more to serve and
- 42:48give.
- 42:49And I think right now you're probably...
- 42:51feeling a lot of where that's at.
- 42:53He's obviously been blessed with
- 42:54opportunities to give and to serve.
- 42:56And I think that there's an element to
- 42:59that where if somebody else can see it,
- 43:03you're doing it the right way.
- 43:04So don't overthink it.
- 43:06I will tell you that.
- 43:07Don't overthink it.
- 43:08Don't fret about it because I think your
- 43:10cup is full for a reason.
- 43:12And if some of that splashes out on
- 43:14some of us folks that need a drop
- 43:16of it, you're in pretty good shape.
- 43:17That's exactly right.
- 43:20I had an old man tell me one
- 43:21time, he said,
- 43:22just be who you are every day.
- 43:23And he said, try to be good.
- 43:24Try to make God proud because you might
- 43:26be the only Jesus they ever see.
- 43:30You know,
- 43:30can we just take this whole episode and
- 43:32just every minute and a half,
- 43:35just drop every minute and a half.
- 43:37It's going to be fantastic.
- 43:39Uh, now when did you,
- 43:41when did you first,
- 43:43when did you first make your appearance
- 43:45into network television?
- 43:46Oh, let me see.
- 43:49Ninety-three, maybe something like that.
- 43:51Yeah.
- 43:51Okay.
- 43:51Go ahead, sir.
- 43:57Oh,
- 43:57I was just gonna ask it from then,
- 44:00from then to now,
- 44:02as your as your opinion changed,
- 44:04because it seems like,
- 44:06from my knowledge is you did a lot
- 44:08of like cooking competition style shows.
- 44:12And then now you've kind of turned that
- 44:14more into the storytelling to help others,
- 44:17which which just, you know,
- 44:20adds more into my cup and makes me
- 44:22feel wonderful.
- 44:23Because I love when people try to do
- 44:24stuff like that.
- 44:25Well,
- 44:26I think when you're on any kind of
- 44:28competition, I mean, sure,
- 44:29you've got a chance to better yourself or
- 44:32worsen yourself, one or the other,
- 44:34you know, depending on how they edit it,
- 44:37because a lot of times they'll put things
- 44:38in there you didn't even say.
- 44:39That's right.
- 44:41I learned that a long time ago,
- 44:42you know,
- 44:42and I had a producer tell me one
- 44:44time, she said,
- 44:45you're the only person I ever know that
- 44:46don't change when the camera comes by.
- 44:48I said, hell,
- 44:48I ain't changed socks in three weeks,
- 44:50you know,
- 44:50I ain't gonna change nothing else,
- 44:52you know.
- 44:53But when we can take something that we
- 44:57create and get it produced how we want
- 45:01it to be produced with our message,
- 45:05it is so much easier to relate to
- 45:07people because they're not thinking, oh,
- 45:11he's going to talk some trash about this
- 45:13person or he's going to say this about
- 45:14somebody.
- 45:15We're here to lift people up.
- 45:17You know,
- 45:18I've always been taught to laugh.
- 45:19You never look down on people unless
- 45:21you're reaching a hand out there to help
- 45:24them up.
- 45:25There's so many people,
- 45:27and I don't mean this bad towards none
- 45:28of them,
- 45:29that in reality TV to where when you're
- 45:32in an interview or something, well,
- 45:35what do you think was wrong with his
- 45:36food?
- 45:37I say, I'm not a judge.
- 45:39I'm a contestant or do you think they
- 45:42should?
- 45:42I said,
- 45:43you're going to ask them questions all day
- 45:45long.
- 45:45It's going to be real short interviews.
- 45:46Hope you have a good day.
- 45:47I'll see you next week.
- 45:51I don't know if I answered your question
- 45:53or not.
- 45:53You know,
- 45:55that gives me some context for sure.
- 45:56Um, do you,
- 45:59so are you producing this show yourself?
- 46:03Uh, no.
- 46:05The production company that we have,
- 46:07Rabbit Foot Productions,
- 46:09they're based out of Austin.
- 46:12The main producer, Clay, is in California.
- 46:15When we sat down and really knew what
- 46:18this was about,
- 46:19he didn't want to change a thing.
- 46:21The people at the Outdoor Channel,
- 46:23when they'll send a producer out because
- 46:26they finish it in-house for them and they
- 46:28know we're not going to change this.
- 46:31We're not going to take out the part
- 46:32to where he's got his hat off and
- 46:34he's praying over food around cowboys.
- 46:37Or when he's got his hat tipped and
- 46:38he's saluting that flag.
- 46:41I trust them.
- 46:41They trust me to make this as good,
- 46:45wholesome, clean TV show.
- 46:47You know,
- 46:48and I think the world needs a whole
- 46:49lot more of that.
- 46:50That's got a message in it.
- 46:51That's simplicity, authenticity, and hey,
- 46:55just everyday good time.
- 46:58You talk about your hat here.
- 47:00What tells the better story,
- 47:01your hat or your boots?
- 47:03Well,
- 47:07I have a hat that's in there in
- 47:08the house that I've had.
- 47:10My dad bought me four days before he
- 47:12died.
- 47:13I was fixing to go speak to these
- 47:14people at this deal.
- 47:15And he said, well,
- 47:16you ain't wearing that old hat you got.
- 47:18He said,
- 47:18I'm going to buy you a new hat.
- 47:20And me or him,
- 47:21neither one didn't have enough money to
- 47:23buy a hat at the time anyway.
- 47:24I don't know where he got it at,
- 47:26but that hat sits in the house.
- 47:28I wore it for eighteen years straight.
- 47:31You know, I'm pretty hard on hats.
- 47:34We call them a cowboy helmet most of
- 47:36the time.
- 47:36But, you know, it's a lot of blood,
- 47:38a lot of sweat, a lot of smoke.
- 47:40But I never judge a man from outward
- 47:43appearance.
- 47:44Uh,
- 47:44I judge a man by what's in his
- 47:46heart and the way he shakes your hand.
- 47:48Uh,
- 47:48them people that give me one of them
- 47:49little fish hands, you know,
- 47:52fish is hard to handle.
- 47:54I try to break their knuckles if I
- 47:55get a chance, but a long,
- 47:58long time ago,
- 47:59we was leaving the house to go gather
- 48:01some cattle.
- 48:01And I was nine or ten years old
- 48:03and, uh,
- 48:04sitting in there with my dad and said,
- 48:05attorney and going towards red river.
- 48:07We turned and went the other direction.
- 48:09And I said, where are we going?
- 48:10He said, we're going to get help.
- 48:12He said,
- 48:12it's going to be a long day.
- 48:14So we wound down around this old pasture
- 48:16and go down the bottom of this old
- 48:17draw and there's a lantern light you can
- 48:19just barely see in the darkness down
- 48:21there.
- 48:21And here comes an elderly old black man
- 48:24leading a white mule that's got on
- 48:26overalls and a conductor's cap.
- 48:28And you know, when you're young,
- 48:31your butt kicks in before your brain and
- 48:33your mouth should, you know?
- 48:34And I said,
- 48:35I've never seen that guy before.
- 48:37If he's going to be help,
- 48:39I hope it's good help.
- 48:40And my daddy reached over there and sort
- 48:41of grabbed me by the ear,
- 48:42like he's going to pull it off.
- 48:43And he said,
- 48:45that man will teach you more about roping
- 48:47horses and cattle than anybody you've met.
- 48:51Never judge a man by the hat on
- 48:52his head, the boots on his feet,
- 48:55or whatever he's riding.
- 48:56And I never seen that man.
- 48:58We put cattle in a pen.
- 49:00There's roping them,
- 49:01dragging fire to brand them.
- 49:03He roped all day long.
- 49:04Over here, over there, underhanded,
- 49:07overhanded,
- 49:08never missed off that white mule.
- 49:10Me and him become dear friends.
- 49:12I called him Uncle Red from that day
- 49:14forward.
- 49:15We were horseback a lot.
- 49:17But hey, hats might tell a story.
- 49:21You know, I don't know.
- 49:25I think a thing that brings back a
- 49:26hat to me,
- 49:27I was on an airplane coming from Kamloops,
- 49:29British Columbia.
- 49:30I'd went up there to entertain for a
- 49:31festival one time and got back on there
- 49:35to fly to Seattle.
- 49:37And this young kid come down the aisle
- 49:39and he said, excuse me, sir,
- 49:41you might not sit here.
- 49:42And I said, no, sir,
- 49:43I don't mind talking.
- 49:44And I had my hat off.
- 49:45He's just sitting there on my knee.
- 49:47And he said, is that your hat?
- 49:50And I said, yes, sir.
- 49:52He said,
- 49:52I'm going to ask you a question.
- 49:55He said, I'm a philosophy major.
- 49:56And he said,
- 49:57I have to write a story for a
- 50:00midterm exam.
- 50:02Can I interview you?
- 50:03I said, I don't care.
- 50:04He said,
- 50:05how come do you take that hat off?
- 50:08I said, young fella, I said,
- 50:10you tip your hat to a lady.
- 50:11You always take your hat off when you
- 50:12go inside.
- 50:13You never put your hat on a bed.
- 50:15And I said,
- 50:16you never let somebody else wear it.
- 50:19I said, that is your prized possession.
- 50:21He said, okay.
- 50:22He said,
- 50:23what do you want wrote on your tombstone
- 50:25when you die?
- 50:26I said, nothing.
- 50:27He said, what do you mean nothing?
- 50:29I said, why go through life
- 50:32and not make a difference then for people
- 50:34to know about you before you die than
- 50:37to put something on a rock that's standing
- 50:38out there and say when you died.
- 50:40I said,
- 50:40make a difference before that time,
- 50:42not after that time.
- 50:44He said,
- 50:44do you mind if I write that down?
- 50:45I said,
- 50:46you write down anything you want to.
- 50:47I don't care.
- 50:48We got to Seattle.
- 50:49He said, I sure do appreciate it.
- 50:50I said, that'll be a hundred dollars.
- 50:52He just looked at me.
- 50:53He said,
- 50:54I didn't know it was going to cost
- 50:55anything.
- 50:55And I said, oh, you're all right.
- 50:59You know,
- 50:59hats and boots were something that were
- 51:02handed down to me for years.
- 51:05You know,
- 51:05I'd wear my oldest brother's boots when my
- 51:07feet got big enough.
- 51:09I never wore my dad's hat because I
- 51:12might have could have put it on and
- 51:13it fit,
- 51:14but I'd never been the man he was.
- 51:19Gosh.
- 51:21Cowboy,
- 51:22you were just crushing the one-liners and
- 51:26all of the wisdom is just amazing.
- 51:28It's the cowboy wisdom.
- 51:29Cowboy wisdom.
- 51:31And along that sentiment,
- 51:32I have a question that I typically ask
- 51:34a lot of the business owners that come
- 51:37on the show,
- 51:37restaurateurs and leaders that we've had.
- 51:41if there was one piece of advice that
- 51:43you would say is the best advice that
- 51:45you've been given,
- 51:47what would you say that advice is?
- 51:49Sit tall in the saddle.
- 51:51Never let go.
- 51:53I don't care if it's your last breath,
- 51:55the love of your life.
- 51:57Love every day like it's the last chance
- 51:59you got.
- 52:00Don't be afraid to tell somebody you love
- 52:02them.
- 52:02Don't be afraid to hug somebody.
- 52:06So many times in life,
- 52:07I think people go through it and they
- 52:08think,
- 52:09Well, men aren't supposed to show emotion.
- 52:13You can't just go tell somebody what you
- 52:16think about them.
- 52:17You never know when the good Lord is
- 52:19going to call you home.
- 52:21You need to tell them today.
- 52:23Don't hesitate.
- 52:24That's what I tell people.
- 52:27Every day is a meal.
- 52:28Every day is a holiday and every meal
- 52:29is a banquet.
- 52:30Make sure you show up to wash your
- 52:31dishes and fill your plate.
- 52:34I'm going to tell my kids that next
- 52:35time we have dinner at grandma's though.
- 52:38See if they agree.
- 52:39Sit tall in a saddle.
- 52:41Sit tall in a saddle.
- 52:43Sit tall in a saddle.
- 52:43That's outstanding.
- 52:44It's been absolutely.
- 52:46I want to thank you for your wisdom
- 52:47today.
- 52:48I know that a lot of times you
- 52:50get just you're always in the middle of
- 52:53cooking or prepping or whatever.
- 52:55And from somebody who.
- 52:58is a fan of the historical sides of
- 53:00things and just your approach.
- 53:03One thing that has not been lost on
- 53:05me today is your ability to recall events
- 53:09or things.
- 53:09And I think so many of us just
- 53:11go through our day without realizing those
- 53:14details.
- 53:16and to see your specifics on that.
- 53:19I've really enjoyed that.
- 53:20And I just want to thank you, though,
- 53:22for your wisdom.
- 53:22I know that a lot of your content
- 53:24around your social media is driven in that
- 53:26and that kind of thing.
- 53:27And just to tell you a direct thank
- 53:29you,
- 53:29I do appreciate it because I think a
- 53:32lot of the world just needs that
- 53:34simplicity.
- 53:34And that's what it is.
- 53:35It's a simplicity that we don't see
- 53:38whether we're plugged in or a screen is
- 53:40on or whatever it is.
- 53:41So just thank you for what you're out
- 53:43there doing because it does make a
- 53:44difference to a lot of us.
- 53:45we,
- 53:46we just having a good time every day.
- 53:48You know, we're going to keep life simple.
- 53:50Uh, it may not,
- 53:52may not look simple at times, but, uh,
- 53:55It all fits, you know.
- 53:57It all fits.
- 53:57You just run it around there somewhere,
- 53:59or you can hem it up in a
- 54:00corner and then beat it into shape and
- 54:01put it in something, you know.
- 54:03Sounds like you spent time in a
- 54:05blacksmithing shop, too,
- 54:06if I know some of that.
- 54:07Yeah, and I've, you know,
- 54:10in between cowboying and cooking on
- 54:12ranches and riding bulls and everything
- 54:14else, because my dad told me, he said,
- 54:15if you're going to be a cowboy,
- 54:16you better learn about thirty-five other
- 54:18professions or you're going to starve to
- 54:19death, you know.
- 54:20Yep.
- 54:21I built houses, built log homes,
- 54:23built cabinets, countertops,
- 54:24poured concrete, laid bricks, you know,
- 54:27drove front end loader, maintainer,
- 54:28bulldozer.
- 54:30And I was on a ranch one time
- 54:31and I won't keep y'all much longer.
- 54:32And this guy told me, he said, say,
- 54:35you know how to run a maintainer?
- 54:37I said, yeah.
- 54:38He said,
- 54:39reckon after you get them dishes washed,
- 54:40you could just run that,
- 54:41just smooth that road out.
- 54:45So I reckon, you know, so I,
- 54:47I smooth road out where they get back
- 54:49in big bull hauling trucks up there.
- 54:51About three days later,
- 54:52he come up here and he said,
- 54:53you know,
- 54:53we're going to put them cows in that
- 54:55trap over, but it's full of mesquite.
- 54:57Can you run a bulldozer?
- 54:58And I said, yeah.
- 54:59He said, Reggie,
- 55:00you clean them mesquites off her?
- 55:01And I said, yeah.
- 55:02Three days later, he went, no.
- 55:03He said, can you work on windmills?
- 55:05And I said, yeah.
- 55:07Well, two days after that,
- 55:08there was an old man that's ninety six
- 55:09years old come into camp and he had
- 55:11been watching all this going on for three
- 55:13or four days.
- 55:13And he said, young fellow,
- 55:14I'm going to tell you something.
- 55:15Sometimes it pays to be stupid.
- 55:19I think the easier way to say that
- 55:22is givers better have a limit because
- 55:26takers have none.
- 55:27So that is true.
- 55:28That's what you're looking at.
- 55:30Uh, we do a thing,
- 55:31a Friday feel good every week, uh,
- 55:33where I wrap it up and I've tried
- 55:35to work it into this one.
- 55:36This is our good time to go ahead
- 55:38and do this next one.
- 55:40Um,
- 55:40y'all may have heard of a guy named
- 55:42Tyler Childers, uh,
- 55:43big in the music scene right now.
- 55:44He had a thing this week and I
- 55:46just had to, uh,
- 55:47I wrote most of it down word for
- 55:49word, uh,
- 55:50hate is a bad chemical inside of you
- 55:54you don't need that the other person
- 55:56doesn't even know and they don't care it
- 55:59bothers them not nary a bit but it
- 56:03does bother you and it's killing you
- 56:05slowly you got to get that out of
- 56:08there expel all that and your expel all
- 56:12that ugliness that you're holding on to so
- 56:15y'all know what to do find somebody you
- 56:16know tell them you love them let's go
- 56:18So there it is.
- 56:20So I love it.
- 56:20Good deal.
- 56:22But cowboy man,
- 56:23I appreciate you more than you, you,
- 56:25you can imagine.
