Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's sure, whatever, Michelle. I actually already recorded this episode,
- 0:06Speaker 1: but I was so stressed when I did it that like,
- 0:09Speaker 1: I hate it, So I'm doing it again. Yay. You'll
- 0:13Speaker 1: never hear that first take of the whole episode that
- 0:17Speaker 1: took me over an hour that I'm just throwing out
- 0:21Speaker 1: because fuck that. I wanna do this episode justice. So
- 0:25Speaker 1: I'm trying again. And if I don't feel like this
- 0:28Speaker 1: time was good enough, I guess there's just not gonna
- 0:31Speaker 1: be good enough. Great, that's just what I wanted. So
- 0:34Speaker 1: we gotta try really really hard, and by we, I
- 0:37Speaker 1: just mean me. So I'm just gonna put a lot
- 0:39Speaker 1: of pressure on myself and hopefully I'm not going to
- 0:43Speaker 1: like collapse under the weight of it, but I feel
- 0:46Speaker 1: like I might, so we'll find out. So obviously we're
- 0:49Speaker 1: gonna talk about episode eleven of Banana Fish. But before
- 0:52Speaker 1: I start, there are a couple of things I wanted
- 0:54Speaker 1: to say. Well, first of all, I'm only two weeks
- 0:57Speaker 1: ahead now on the podcast. For a while, there was
- 1:00Speaker 1: running like super far ahead. So now I'm actually recording
- 1:04Speaker 1: in the same month that the podcast is airing again,
- 1:07Speaker 1: which is good, and that means there's a couple of
- 1:09Speaker 1: things I want to tell you about. By the time
- 1:12Speaker 1: you hear this, it'll already be a couple of weeks
- 1:14Speaker 1: into the new season of anime, the fall season. But
- 1:19Speaker 1: in case you don't know yet, the third season of
- 1:22Speaker 1: Ree zero is airing on Wednesdays. So yeah, if you
- 1:27Speaker 1: liked ree zero and we did it on the show,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and you watch the second season, like, go for it,
- 1:32Speaker 1: get in there, watch some Ree zero or something or
- 1:35Speaker 1: don't I don't know, and don't forget about dunda on
- 1:40Speaker 1: which yay is exciting. So yeah, check check them out
- 1:45Speaker 1: if you want to, or if not, because you don't
- 1:47Speaker 1: want to, because now after watching this anime with me,
- 1:52Speaker 1: my opinion no longer holds any weight. That's okay too,
- 1:57Speaker 1: I understand. Besides that, I've been wanting to tell you
- 2:01Speaker 1: guys for a long time that. And it's not that
- 2:04Speaker 1: big of a deal that in Banana Fish, Ash's hairlines,
- 2:10Speaker 1: like the outline of his hair are a different color
- 2:12Speaker 1: than all the other lines. And maybe you're thinking, why
- 2:17Speaker 1: do you know that. I don't know why. I know that.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I've just stared at it a lot. So most of
- 2:23Speaker 1: the lines in this show are black. I wanted to
- 2:25Speaker 1: talk about this because they're like thicker than usual, and
- 2:28Speaker 1: they kind of have like a modeled look to them,
- 2:31Speaker 1: almost like maybe they were supposed to be done with
- 2:33Speaker 1: like a piece of charcoal or like a pencil. I mean,
- 2:37Speaker 1: not that messy, but kind of in that vein. And
- 2:40Speaker 1: actually that's, in my opinion, created some problems because when
- 2:44Speaker 1: you have characters that are further back in the shot,
- 2:46Speaker 1: the lines are so big that you can't get a
- 2:47Speaker 1: lot of detail on them. So I'm not a huge
- 2:50Speaker 1: fan of that. But in general, these outlines are black,
- 2:54Speaker 1: but Ash's hair lines are like a mustard yellow color
- 2:59Speaker 1: or brown or whatever that is. And I thought that
- 3:02Speaker 1: was really cool, and I'd seen it several weeks back
- 3:06Speaker 1: and then been like, well, maybe everyone's hairlines are a
- 3:08Speaker 1: different color. No, they're not. And I thought, well, maybe
- 3:11Speaker 1: people with like blonde hair or like light colored hair
- 3:14Speaker 1: have lighter colored hair lines outlines of their hair. No,
- 3:17Speaker 1: it's just Ash. So there you go. Now you note that,
- 3:21Speaker 1: why is that happening? I'm not sure, but it is.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And the other thing before we get into this episode,
- 3:27Speaker 1: I just wanted to remind you guys. I think I
- 3:30Speaker 1: talked about this either in episode three or episode six
- 3:33Speaker 1: I can't remember about how Ash doesn't really speak for
- 3:38Speaker 1: himself and everyone else is kind of relaying information about
- 3:42Speaker 1: him to other people. Like we found out all sorts
- 3:45Speaker 1: of stuff about his past, not through him usually, especially
- 3:49Speaker 1: like episode nine, we just find out like lots of
- 3:52Speaker 1: stuff and it's all you know, either when he's not
- 3:55Speaker 1: in the room or when he's in the room uncomfortably.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So we're gonna see that start to in this episode,
- 4:01Speaker 1: so be ready for it. I guess. Okay, that's that's
- 4:06Speaker 1: enough random stuff. So Banana Fish Episode eleven is called
- 4:09Speaker 1: The Beautiful and Damned, which is also the title of
- 4:14Speaker 1: a novel by f. Scott Fitzgerald about like two lovers
- 4:19Speaker 1: that get married and they're like in a really passionate
- 4:22Speaker 1: relationship and then they fall out of love. Basically, it's actually,
- 4:25Speaker 1: in my opinion, the antithesis of Banana Fish and Ash
- 4:29Speaker 1: and Agy, but you know that's just my stupid opinion.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And even though the story isn't related to the episode,
- 4:36Speaker 1: I think the title is awesome and perfect for this episode.
- 4:40Speaker 1: It might be my favorite episode title in the show.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I'm not sure, but right now it is so there. Okay,
- 4:47Speaker 1: So if you remember where we left off last time,
- 4:51Speaker 1: everyone had escaped from the mansion that was on fire.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Now Ash was heading towards Manhattan in a red sports car,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and Sing and Yue Lung were in a helicopter. So
- 5:06Speaker 1: we pick up a little bit past that. So we
- 5:11Speaker 1: start off with Charlie. Remember Cop Charlie, we haven't seen
- 5:14Speaker 1: him in a couple episodes, sitting on his couch in
- 5:17Speaker 1: a robe watching TV, looking just really really shocked. And
- 5:20Speaker 1: there's a newscaster on the TV and he says, last night,
- 5:23Speaker 1: the home of Dino Goldzine, the head of the Corsican mafia,
- 5:26Speaker 1: was attacked, and we see the mansion briefly on the
- 5:29Speaker 1: TV and it's like super fucked up. And then there's
- 5:32Speaker 1: a knock on the door and Charlie jumps. We hear
- 5:36Speaker 1: Max from the other side of the door say, Charlie,
- 5:38Speaker 1: it's me, It's Max. We got to a few moments
- 5:42Speaker 1: later when Shunichi and Max are slumped over in exhaustion
- 5:45Speaker 1: on the couch and they're still in their suits, so
- 5:48Speaker 1: it's not been very long since they escaped. Charlie's like,
- 5:52Speaker 1: what the hell happened? Where's Ash and Ag and Max
- 5:55Speaker 1: says okay, chitchack and wait, let me catch my breath first,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and Charlie says, what happened to Ash I saw on TV?
- 6:03Speaker 1: And Max cuts him off and is like, we know
- 6:06Speaker 1: we're the ones who called the cops. Then we go
- 6:08Speaker 1: to Dino and I think Gregory, and they're standing outside
- 6:12Speaker 1: the destroyed mansion, and I'll explain, it is very destroyed,
- 6:17Speaker 1: like parts of the roof are just missing, like there's
- 6:19Speaker 1: chunks of it are gone, the windows are broken, there's
- 6:22Speaker 1: like debris everywhere. In fact, I don't know that the
- 6:25Speaker 1: roof could stay up in the condition that it's in.
- 6:27Speaker 1: It looks bad, guys, really bad, Like I would assume
- 6:30Speaker 1: it's just gonna have to be knocked down and rebuilt.
- 6:33Speaker 1: So hopefully he has insurance, I guess. If we want
- 6:38Speaker 1: him to have an easy time, maybe we hope he
- 6:41Speaker 1: doesn't have insurance. Yeah, fuck you, Dino. Anyway, they're just
- 6:44Speaker 1: standing there and this other mob guy comes up and
- 6:47Speaker 1: is like the reporters, and Gregory's like, send them away,
- 6:52Speaker 1: shut them all out. Now we cut down to a
- 6:56Speaker 1: kind of run down apartment, I guess, and it's it's
- 7:00Speaker 1: kind of like dirty, but not in the sense that
- 7:02Speaker 1: the dirt is fresh in the sense that the dirt
- 7:04Speaker 1: is now a part of the apartment. It's like baked
- 7:07Speaker 1: in there, so it's not like it's not clean, it's
- 7:10Speaker 1: just that it can never be clean again, kind of deal.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And we see this dude like come around the corner
- 7:15Speaker 1: in the hallway and be like Boss is back. And
- 7:17Speaker 1: then Ash comes into the room and everyone like stands
- 7:20Speaker 1: up in excitement, and we see Bones Kong, Alex and
- 7:23Speaker 1: Ag as well as some other people, and they all
- 7:26Speaker 1: are like talking over each other, like trying to talk
- 7:28Speaker 1: to Ash, and Ash is not really paying attention. He's
- 7:32Speaker 1: just kind of looking around until finally he sees Ag
- 7:36Speaker 1: and Ag smiles, Hey, anyway, Alex says, now that you're back,
- 7:41Speaker 1: we won't let Arthur have his way, and Ash is like,
- 7:44Speaker 1: first food and clothing, check up on all our buyers.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I have no idea what buyers. He means. I don't
- 7:50Speaker 1: think that they're selling drugs, because I don't think Ash
- 7:53Speaker 1: really likes drugs. But maybe they're stealing catalytic converters. I
- 7:57Speaker 1: don't know they're doing something. Anyway, he looks at a
- 8:00Speaker 1: cell phone and he's like pressing on it and stuff
- 8:02Speaker 1: the way you would touch a cell phone, you know,
- 8:05Speaker 1: and then he hands it to Alex and he says,
- 8:07Speaker 1: tell Fly to get these for me, and Alex is
- 8:09Speaker 1: like okay, and Ash continues and two cell phones and
- 8:12Speaker 1: a tablet. There's like a bed in the room, which
- 8:15Speaker 1: is weird because it's like a living room, and he
- 8:17Speaker 1: like just falls face first onto the bed and he says, now,
- 8:21Speaker 1: give me two hours of sleep. And then it's just silence,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and everyone looks scared, basically, and AG's like he fell
- 8:33Speaker 1: asleep just like that, and Alex is like, yeah, he's
- 8:37Speaker 1: always like this. Ag is just confused, and Ash suddenly
- 8:41Speaker 1: sits up, and it causes all of the guys in
- 8:43Speaker 1: the gang to like yell and run for their lives,
- 8:45Speaker 1: and AG is just like, what the fuck is happening?
- 8:48Speaker 1: And Ash says, two hours, wake me up in two hours.
- 8:51Speaker 1: The gang members are all like cowering behind the couch,
- 8:54Speaker 1: except for Alex, who could just kind of get behind
- 8:56Speaker 1: Ag before I guess Ash started talking and Bones and
- 9:00Speaker 1: Conger like yes, boss, and Ashley's back down, and then
- 9:04Speaker 1: we go to the opening theme. Yep. Anyway, we go
- 9:09Speaker 1: to Dino, Gregory and Arthur who are walking down the
- 9:13Speaker 1: hall somewhere. Obviously it's not in the mansion, because the
- 9:16Speaker 1: mansion is a disaster, And Arthur says, give me another chance,
- 9:20Speaker 1: and Dino's like, I already asked you to get all
- 9:23Speaker 1: of the groups in Manhattan under your control. And Arthur says,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I thought I'd taken care of all of Ash's guys.
- 9:29Speaker 1: He's like sweating and stuff, and Dino's like, my mansion's
- 9:32Speaker 1: in ruins. Ash has escaped and now the meat is
- 9:36Speaker 1: all over my tail to you fool. Gregory opens the
- 9:39Speaker 1: door to a room and he and you know go inside,
- 9:42Speaker 1: leaving Arthur alone in the hallway, and Arthur's like shit.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Back to the apartment where Age is sleeping on like
- 9:50Speaker 1: an armchair and everyone else is kind of out of
- 9:54Speaker 1: it as well, and his alarm goes off and it
- 9:56Speaker 1: wakes him up, and he says to the other guys,
- 10:00Speaker 1: it's been two hours. You guys gonna wake him up. Alex,
- 10:03Speaker 1: Bones and Kong just kind of like look away from him,
- 10:07Speaker 1: maybe ashamed, and AG's like, what are you guys afraid of?
- 10:12Speaker 1: Kong and Bones look to Alex and Alex sighs, and
- 10:15Speaker 1: he's like Ash has a real bad temper when he
- 10:18Speaker 1: wakes up. Well, there's just kind of a pause and
- 10:21Speaker 1: Age's like, that's it. Kng says, you don't understand. He's
- 10:26Speaker 1: scarier than a line when he wakes up. Bones then
- 10:29Speaker 1: shows Ag his missing front teeth, which you might not
- 10:34Speaker 1: have noticed because it just looks like he is fangs.
- 10:37Speaker 1: But no, that's because he's got no front teeth. And
- 10:40Speaker 1: he says, this is what I got for waking him
- 10:42Speaker 1: up last time, geez, and Age's just like fine. He
- 10:47Speaker 1: stands up and he's like, I'll wake him up. He
- 10:50Speaker 1: starts to walk over, and Kanng and Bones and Alex
- 10:53Speaker 1: are like freaking out and trying to think of a
- 10:55Speaker 1: way to stop him, but they don't. By this point,
- 10:58Speaker 1: Ag has reached the bed that Ash sleeping in and
- 11:00Speaker 1: he gently shakes him and he says, Ash, wake up,
- 11:03Speaker 1: it's time. Ash like doesn't move at all, and then
- 11:07Speaker 1: Ag just slaps him on the head and he's like,
- 11:09Speaker 1: I said wake up. It's been two hours. And the
- 11:12Speaker 1: gang looks on in fear from out of the room
- 11:15Speaker 1: again and Ash just groans and he finally opens his eyes.
- 11:20Speaker 1: He's like still mostly under the covers though, and Bones
- 11:24Speaker 1: to the guys in the kitchen with him hiding, says,
- 11:27Speaker 1: see is frown and Alex is like, yeah, he's in
- 11:30Speaker 1: for it now, and Conk says, I'm shaking. Ash just
- 11:35Speaker 1: sits up and he looks really grotcky and he says
- 11:39Speaker 1: two hours and AG's like, yeah, just like you said.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Ash puts his hand on his forehead and he's like,
- 11:45Speaker 1: I said that, I'm gonna take a shower. The gang
- 11:50Speaker 1: watches in complete and utter confusion as he heads to
- 11:54Speaker 1: the bathroom, and then they look at Ag like maybe
- 11:57Speaker 1: he's some kind of magician, until they asked from the bathroom, say, hey,
- 12:01Speaker 1: where's the soap? Where's the shampoo? Ag watches in astonishment
- 12:07Speaker 1: as the gang scrambles to find them, and he just
- 12:10Speaker 1: kind of smiles. What caught me off guard the first
- 12:13Speaker 1: time I watched this was how afraid everyone was to
- 12:16Speaker 1: wake him up, and the whole thing with Bones losing
- 12:19Speaker 1: his teeth, which is so sad because Bones is so
- 12:22Speaker 1: cute and nice and probably a murderer. So I highly doubt,
- 12:26Speaker 1: based on what we've seen of asked so far, that
- 12:29Speaker 1: he would intentionally punch someone in the face if they
- 12:34Speaker 1: woke him up, especially if he asked them to wake
- 12:36Speaker 1: him up. It seems a little bit more likely that
- 12:41Speaker 1: he doesn't react well to being touched, and that it's
- 12:44Speaker 1: kind of an unconscious physical reaction that he's having, especially
- 12:49Speaker 1: he's asleep. He seems to sleep pretty deep, so being
- 12:53Speaker 1: woken up from that by some unknown person touching him
- 12:58Speaker 1: is probably very upsetting for him. And it's interesting to
- 13:02Speaker 1: me that the gang doesn't get this context. But it
- 13:07Speaker 1: fits in with everything we've seen of him so far.
- 13:10Speaker 1: We've multiple times had people try to touch him and
- 13:14Speaker 1: him like recoil and say don't touch me. And we've
- 13:18Speaker 1: seen most of the people who have touched him it
- 13:21Speaker 1: be in a negative connotation. So I don't think it's
- 13:24Speaker 1: a leap to say that he is some sort of
- 13:26Speaker 1: aversion to touch. I'm going to take it a step
- 13:29Speaker 1: further and tell you that I think he has half
- 13:32Speaker 1: a phobia, which is the fear of being touched, obviously,
- 13:36Speaker 1: but we can maybe talk about that some other time.
- 13:39Speaker 1: We cut to the bathroom, which is one of those
- 13:43Speaker 1: really nice tiled kind of like forties or maybe fifties
- 13:47Speaker 1: bathrooms that I love so much, and Age walks in
- 13:52Speaker 1: and he puts a bottle of refreshment shampoo on the
- 13:56Speaker 1: floor next to Ash, who is in the tub taking
- 13:58Speaker 1: a bathroom, not a shower, so maybe that was a
- 14:00Speaker 1: translation error. And he starts to walk out, and Ash says,
- 14:06Speaker 1: aren't you gonna ask me about shorter? Ag stops and
- 14:10Speaker 1: he's like, you can tell me when you're ready. Ah, Ag,
- 14:16Speaker 1: you're the best. Ash is like leaning over the tub
- 14:19Speaker 1: and his hair is in his eyes so we really
- 14:21Speaker 1: can't see his expression, and he says, I made sure
- 14:24Speaker 1: they'd never be able to touch him again. EG is
- 14:27Speaker 1: still at the door, just kind of staring at the door,
- 14:29Speaker 1: and he says, I say and he turns to Ash.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Thank you Ash. He opens the door and walks out,
- 14:38Speaker 1: leaving Ash alone to grieve. Ash eventually emerges from the
- 14:43Speaker 1: bathroom and he sits down on the couch with the
- 14:45Speaker 1: tablet that I guess they got for him. And AG
- 14:49Speaker 1: is watching the gang as they watch Ash intently, and
- 14:54Speaker 1: he thinks they're holding their breath, watching his every move,
- 14:59Speaker 1: waiting for their bom order. His words are their law.
- 15:02Speaker 1: He's their king, the symbol of respect, fear, and absolute authority.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Then he looks down. But that's not the Ash I know.
- 15:11Speaker 1: I will cut in here to say that this is
- 15:13Speaker 1: a pretty big departure from the Ash that we know
- 15:15Speaker 1: as well. He's very very authoritative, very very flat emotionally.
- 15:20Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that we know Ash is an
- 15:21Speaker 1: incredibly emotional character, but this is a new side or
- 15:27Speaker 1: new level for him. Anyway, back to Ash, he says,
- 15:32Speaker 1: what groups are under Arthur now? And Alex is like
- 15:36Speaker 1: almost all of them, only too other than the Chinese
- 15:38Speaker 1: are still somewhat neutral and they're too afraid to do anything.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Ash smirks, and he's like typical Arthur. He stands up.
- 15:46Speaker 1: He's looking for me, like his life depends on it.
- 15:48Speaker 1: He's backed by the Corsican mafia now, but I'll repress them.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And they kind of gasp because that's a big claim
- 15:54Speaker 1: to make, you know, He continues, You guys, gather as
- 15:58Speaker 1: much info as you can, the number of men, their races,
- 16:00Speaker 1: who their bosses are, and their hideouts. But be careful,
- 16:03Speaker 1: remember you're in danger. To stay alert. And everyone's like, yes, boss,
- 16:08Speaker 1: and Ash pauses and he says, now go and everyone
- 16:12Speaker 1: just runs off. Yeah. To be a street punk in
- 16:16Speaker 1: a New York gang must be nice. It only takes
- 16:21Speaker 1: less than a minute for all of the gang members
- 16:24Speaker 1: to be totally cleared out of the apartments, and at
- 16:27Speaker 1: that point Ash looks to Ag, who's staring at him,
- 16:31Speaker 1: and in a much less authoritative voice, says, what is it.
- 16:35Speaker 1: AG's like, you're a real leader. Ash says, it's just
- 16:39Speaker 1: a troop of monkeys. Anyway, let's eat. We then cut
- 16:43Speaker 1: to them sitting I think, like at the kind of
- 16:46Speaker 1: coffee table in the living room area with some sushi
- 16:50Speaker 1: and like tofu with like a sauce on it and soda,
- 16:54Speaker 1: and AG's like, wow, it really is Japanese tofu. Ash
- 16:57Speaker 1: breaks apart, like some of those would takeout chopsticks and says, yeah,
- 17:01Speaker 1: they picked it out for you. I assume he meets
- 17:04Speaker 1: the gang members, but I'm not sure. He picks up
- 17:07Speaker 1: a piece of sushi with the chopsticks and Age's like, wow,
- 17:10Speaker 1: you're good with chopsticks. You could live in Japan, and
- 17:12Speaker 1: Ash says, Japan. Huh do you have any family? Now?
- 17:17Speaker 1: I feel like that would be a weird question to
- 17:20Speaker 1: ask basically a teenager if it wasn't coming from Ash,
- 17:23Speaker 1: but coming from Ash. Yeah, you know, I don't know
- 17:26Speaker 1: how many of the gang members around him have family.
- 17:29Speaker 1: He basically doesn't really have family anymore. So I get it.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Age's like my parents and a kid's sister. Ash says,
- 17:39Speaker 1: a little sister. She must be really cute, and he's like, yeah, right,
- 17:43Speaker 1: absolutely not. Ash just kind of chuckles and he looks
- 17:47Speaker 1: really relaxed, and he's like, we've never talked like this before.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Even after all this time, He's like, you're right. Ash says,
- 17:55Speaker 1: I don't know anything about you. Your hair is pitch
- 17:59Speaker 1: black and your eyes are deep and dark too. Jeez, Ash,
- 18:02Speaker 1: what are you doing? You know I hated dark things
- 18:05Speaker 1: when I was a kid. We cut to the night
- 18:08Speaker 1: sky with a full moon and we hear Ash say,
- 18:14Speaker 1: one year, my dad carved me a jack a lantern
- 18:16Speaker 1: for Halloween. I wore it out trig or treating and
- 18:19Speaker 1: we see a bunch of kids in costumes walking down
- 18:21Speaker 1: the street and Ash with a pumpkin on his head.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I know, I don't know why that would happen, but
- 18:27Speaker 1: maybe he's just really creative and he didn't have a costume,
- 18:30Speaker 1: so he was like, I guess I can just put
- 18:31Speaker 1: this pumpkin on my head. It's not super heavy. It
- 18:33Speaker 1: totally is heavy, but whatever, I'll give it to him.
- 18:37Speaker 1: He continues, I decided to hide in the woods so
- 18:40Speaker 1: I could scare Griffin on his way home from school.
- 18:43Speaker 1: We see Ash running in like a forest and then
- 18:46Speaker 1: like sitting against a tree, and he continues, it was
- 18:50Speaker 1: pitch dark and there were eerie noises all around. I
- 18:53Speaker 1: got scared, so I turned to just go home, and
- 18:56Speaker 1: I saw this huge pumpkin floating towards me. And you know,
- 19:00Speaker 1: little Ash sees a pumpkin peering out of a bush
- 19:04Speaker 1: with a big scary smile, and he like runs away, panicked.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Let me cut back to now, and he says, looking
- 19:10Speaker 1: very annoyed by the way. I realized a couple of
- 19:13Speaker 1: years later that it was just my reflection in the
- 19:15Speaker 1: windshield of a car. But I've hated pumpkins ever since.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Just seeing one gives me the chills. AG is like
- 19:23Speaker 1: just staring at Ash like slack jawed, and Ash is like, what,
- 19:31Speaker 1: I don't think Ash has ever told anyone this before.
- 19:34Speaker 1: AG is doing his best not to laugh. He's trying
- 19:38Speaker 1: so hard, but he just can't hold it in, and
- 19:41Speaker 1: he kind of starts to giggle, and Ash is blushing now,
- 19:45Speaker 1: and he's like, what's so funny? AG is laughing, and
- 19:49Speaker 1: he's tears in his eyes, and he's like, you better
- 19:51Speaker 1: not tell that to anyone else. Ash is like full
- 19:55Speaker 1: on blushing and embarrassment, and ag continues, a guy who's
- 19:58Speaker 1: got the mafia gunpoint is gared of pumpkins. I've got
- 20:01Speaker 1: to tell Goalsing to fire his bodyguards and plant a
- 20:04Speaker 1: pumpkin garden instead. Ash's embarrassment just knows no bounds at
- 20:07Speaker 1: this point, and he huffs and he's like, laugh all
- 20:10Speaker 1: you want. He goes to drink some soda, but then
- 20:14Speaker 1: something catches his attention and he stares into the hallway.
- 20:18Speaker 1: He stands and starts to reach for the gun that's
- 20:21Speaker 1: in the back of his pants. Agy, who is finally
- 20:24Speaker 1: getting control of his laughter, says what is it. Ash, now,
- 20:28Speaker 1: with the gun in his hand, says, get behind the bed, hurry,
- 20:33Speaker 1: and Age obliges. Ash then kneels behind the chair and
- 20:36Speaker 1: he points his gun towards the hallway and waits. Then
- 20:41Speaker 1: we hear a voice say, hey, my man, it's me.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Don't put a hole on me now, and a pair
- 20:47Speaker 1: of sunglasses and a hat peek around the corner of
- 20:50Speaker 1: the doorframe. But they don't have like a person in them.
- 20:52Speaker 1: It's just a hat and glasses, basically floating for a second,
- 20:57Speaker 1: and Ash relaxes and he's like, okay, it's just Fly.
- 21:01Speaker 1: In the manga. Fly just knocked on the door like
- 21:03Speaker 1: a normal person, which makes way more sense than entering
- 21:06Speaker 1: an apartment that you know has someone who wants to
- 21:08Speaker 1: buy a gun from you and may have a gun
- 21:10Speaker 1: already without any sort of notification. So but that's okay.
- 21:15Speaker 1: The anime did it in a cute less realistic way,
- 21:18Speaker 1: but whatever. So anyway, Fly enters not just his sunglasses
- 21:24Speaker 1: and hat, and he is this like black dude with
- 21:28Speaker 1: blonde hair, and he looks like a nineteen seventies pimp.
- 21:32Speaker 1: So it would have been great if this is one
- 21:34Speaker 1: of the character designs that got updated, but hey, I
- 21:37Speaker 1: guess we're not gonna do that. Anyway. He's like, yo,
- 21:40Speaker 1: and we cut to a bunch of guns laid out
- 21:43Speaker 1: on a table, all sorts of guns, and Flies like,
- 21:47Speaker 1: I brought the goods you asked for. He picks up
- 21:50Speaker 1: one of the guns and he hands to Ash and
- 21:52Speaker 1: he's like, see just the way you like it. Ash
- 21:55Speaker 1: is just kind of looking at it, and Fly continues,
- 21:57Speaker 1: you still like that old fashioned revolver, huh? He picks
- 21:59Speaker 1: up another gun. How about this baby instead? It's the
- 22:02Speaker 1: Cold Government forty five ACP. Ash is not interested. He's
- 22:07Speaker 1: still looking at the revolver that he's holding and he's like,
- 22:09Speaker 1: don't eat it. Flies like, but it's pretty handy. You
- 22:12Speaker 1: can kill a lot more bad guys with this, and
- 22:14Speaker 1: Ash is like yeah, but I won't be able to stop.
- 22:17Speaker 1: AG looks shocked and Flies like, you're an old fashioned sniper,
- 22:22Speaker 1: straight up and honest, huh? And Ash is like like,
- 22:25Speaker 1: hell I am. Whoever heard of an honest murderer? I
- 22:28Speaker 1: fucking love Ash. At this point, Fly is packing up
- 22:31Speaker 1: his stuff and he says, by the way, you can't
- 22:33Speaker 1: pay for this right. Ash is like, don't worry, and
- 22:36Speaker 1: he takes off that ear ring the Dino gave him
- 22:39Speaker 1: and he's like, here's some jade. It's worth four hundred
- 22:41Speaker 1: thousand dollars, and he throws at the Fly and AG's
- 22:45Speaker 1: like four hundred thousand dollars. Fly studies the jade and
- 22:50Speaker 1: he's like it's real. I guess Fly is an expert
- 22:53Speaker 1: in precious stones and not just guns, so that's good
- 22:56Speaker 1: for him. Good to be diverse. AG's like, what'd you
- 22:59Speaker 1: get that? And Ash is like it was a gift.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Ag says from who, Yeah, Ash was not expecting follow
- 23:08Speaker 1: up questions, and he just starts to like blush slightly,
- 23:12Speaker 1: and he's like, none of your business. And at this
- 23:14Speaker 1: point he's really blushing and his arms are crossed, and
- 23:17Speaker 1: Fly is not really paying attention, and he's like, oh right,
- 23:20Speaker 1: I'm also taking orders for coffins. Ash's like, get lost
- 23:23Speaker 1: before I stuff you in one. Flies like okay, whatever
- 23:26Speaker 1: you say, any leaves. So yeah, I don't know if
- 23:31Speaker 1: he was getting uncomfortable because he didn't want to explain
- 23:34Speaker 1: the whole like gouls and gave me this earring that
- 23:38Speaker 1: matches my eyes thing to Ag or like he didn't
- 23:42Speaker 1: want Fly to know, but he was just not expecting
- 23:45Speaker 1: to have to, you know, to further explain any of that,
- 23:49Speaker 1: which was cute. We see age in the kitchen, which
- 23:53Speaker 1: is like a little galley kitchen, and there are some
- 23:57Speaker 1: like cans of tomatoes and soup around, mostly just tomatoes.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I don't know what they were gonna cook, maybe just
- 24:04Speaker 1: tomato sauce, and also some like oats and cereal and coffee.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Ag is staring blankly at a kettle that he's heating
- 24:14Speaker 1: on a two burner stove that doesn't look anything like
- 24:16Speaker 1: you'd see in New York, But that's okay, and he thinks,
- 24:21Speaker 1: I don't know how to feel Ash. We get some
- 24:24Speaker 1: flashbacks of like the past couple of episodes, and AG continues,
- 24:29Speaker 1: the U who kills relentlessly amidst all that blood and gunpowder,
- 24:33Speaker 1: the U who hates pumpkins and pouts about it. Which
- 24:37Speaker 1: is the real you? We see Ash looking out the
- 24:42Speaker 1: window and AG continues, or are they both you coexisting
- 24:46Speaker 1: within you? Side by side? He's carrying the two cups
- 24:49Speaker 1: of coffee down the hall, he continues, Sometimes I get
- 24:53Speaker 1: really scared. Ash takes the coffee from AG and he
- 24:56Speaker 1: blows on it and he realizes that A is staring
- 25:01Speaker 1: at him, and he's like, why are you staring at me?
- 25:06Speaker 1: AG's like, oh, I just noticed that even your eyelashes
- 25:09Speaker 1: are blond. Nice save Ag. Ash grins like super widely,
- 25:14Speaker 1: and he's like, you know down there is blonde too.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Do you want to see? And AG's like, for real,
- 25:21Speaker 1: yeah I do. And that is not what Ash was
- 25:25Speaker 1: expecting to happen. And he looks so freaked out, and
- 25:28Speaker 1: he like backs up against the wall and AG's like,
- 25:32Speaker 1: I I was just kidding. I don't think you were, AG.
- 25:37Speaker 1: So we cut to Ash, who's sitting on the bed now,
- 25:40Speaker 1: just drinking the coffee, and he's like, you're so weird.
- 25:43Speaker 1: AG then continues his inner monologue. He thinks you're so close,
- 25:48Speaker 1: but I get scared you might slip away to some
- 25:50Speaker 1: far away place. And we see that he's like on
- 25:53Speaker 1: the other bed and Ash is like as far away
- 25:56Speaker 1: from him as he could possibly muster because he's so
- 25:58Speaker 1: weirded out, while AG's zips the coffee like awkwardly. Next,
- 26:03Speaker 1: we see a tablet with a New York Journal article
- 26:07Speaker 1: open on it about Senator Peter Grant being stabbed by
- 26:10Speaker 1: a secretary. Guess that was the dude in that hotel
- 26:13Speaker 1: that was stabbed just last episode. And I can read
- 26:17Speaker 1: a little bit of the article. In the last episode,
- 26:20Speaker 1: they just said the presidential candidate person, so I wasn't
- 26:24Speaker 1: sure who they meant. So it looks like he's the
- 26:26Speaker 1: forerunner to be the Democratic nominee for president, but he's
- 26:30Speaker 1: dead so it doesn't matter anymore anyway. Ash is looking
- 26:33Speaker 1: at it, obviously, and he is not wearing a shirt,
- 26:35Speaker 1: which is important. Sorry, Ag touches his wounded arm, remember
- 26:42Speaker 1: when the gun grazed him. He touches it with a
- 26:45Speaker 1: cotton ball and Ash flinches and he's like ouch, and
- 26:48Speaker 1: she's like, sorry, did that sting? And Ash says, hell,
- 26:52Speaker 1: yeah did. I don't know about you, but I have
- 26:55Speaker 1: a delicate body. It really hurts when you do it
- 26:59Speaker 1: sloppy like that. AG's eyes narrow and he thinks, too bad,
- 27:03Speaker 1: it was in your mouth that was hurt, and he
- 27:05Speaker 1: smiles deviously. Then we cut to outside the window where
- 27:08Speaker 1: some pigeons are hanging out, and we hear AG say, well,
- 27:12Speaker 1: sorry about that. I'm just a sloppy Japanese. I can't
- 27:15Speaker 1: do it any better, and we hear like Ash like
- 27:17Speaker 1: struggling and yelping in pain, and we cut back and
- 27:21Speaker 1: Ash is loosely wrapped in gauze like amami basically, and
- 27:26Speaker 1: Ag kind of marches off, like really impressed with himself.
- 27:29Speaker 1: But when he's in the doorway, he turns back and
- 27:31Speaker 1: he says, would the delicate American like a sandwich made
- 27:35Speaker 1: by the sloppy Japanese? And Ashes like, as long as
- 27:38Speaker 1: there's no fingers in it, and they kind of like
- 27:40Speaker 1: raise their fists at each other and then smile and
- 27:42Speaker 1: laugh a little, which is fine. But in the manga
- 27:45Speaker 1: they flipped each other off, which made more sense with
- 27:47Speaker 1: a joke about not having fingers in the sandwich. So
- 27:52Speaker 1: I hate that that was censored, but that's okay. We
- 27:54Speaker 1: cut to Max and Shunichi sitting in I guess Charlie's
- 27:57Speaker 1: living room, and Max says, all be fine, ashe will
- 28:01Speaker 1: protect him even if it cost his life. He took
- 28:03Speaker 1: ag with him, knowing the risk he had to. Shinichi
- 28:07Speaker 1: kind of exhales, and Max continues, even that tough little
- 28:11Speaker 1: Lynx couldn't bear to be alone right now. Oh. He
- 28:14Speaker 1: SIPs some whiskey, and Shinci says, I guess you're right.
- 28:19Speaker 1: I think i'll have a drink too. Max is like,
- 28:22Speaker 1: that's the spirit, and he pours him some whiskey. Age's
- 28:25Speaker 1: a strange kid. Shunci is confused by that assertion. Max continues,
- 28:30Speaker 1: he's pretty damn plain, if you know what I mean.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Geez Like, he's a really nice boy, but that's it.
- 28:37Speaker 1: For better or worse, he lacks personality on like ash.
- 28:40Speaker 1: He takes a sip of his drink. Again, He's got
- 28:43Speaker 1: a strange power, though, it's like he's got the ability
- 28:46Speaker 1: to comfort those around him. He's the exact opposite of Ash,
- 28:50Speaker 1: and Shinici says, I wouldn't say it like that. We
- 28:54Speaker 1: cut to a flashback of their time in Cape cod
- 28:57Speaker 1: where Ash was showing a you had to shoot a gun,
- 29:00Speaker 1: But it's not like a direct flashback from episode six.
- 29:03Speaker 1: It is from Shunichi's perspective, so it's different animation, and
- 29:07Speaker 1: we hear Shounichi say they had a really good time
- 29:09Speaker 1: together when we were in Cape God, they'd have looked
- 29:12Speaker 1: just like two boys having a good time if it
- 29:14Speaker 1: weren't for the gun. It was comforting to watch. Ash
- 29:17Speaker 1: noticed me while I was watching them, and it only
- 29:19Speaker 1: took a split second to read what was going on
- 29:21Speaker 1: in my mind. We see Ash look away from age
- 29:25Speaker 1: and his expression just goes cold. Shunici continues, his care
- 29:29Speaker 1: free expression was gone, and he was his usual self again.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I felt so sorry for him. I wonder when he
- 29:36Speaker 1: learned to be like that. Max, in a rather downcast way, says,
- 29:41Speaker 1: he can only be a kid again when he's with Agy,
- 29:44Speaker 1: just a normal seventeen year old. Yeah. We cut to
- 29:54Speaker 1: the apartment again and Ash is startled awake, by a nightmare.
- 29:59Speaker 1: He said, it's straight up, and he's sweating and breathing
- 30:01Speaker 1: really hard, and he looks like so frightened. He looks
- 30:06Speaker 1: over and Ag is in the bed next to him,
- 30:09Speaker 1: sleeping soundly. He calms down. We cut to him turning
- 30:15Speaker 1: off the faucet in the bathroom, his hand over his face,
- 30:18Speaker 1: like he's just splashed water on his face. He looks
- 30:21Speaker 1: up in the mirror and he sees that Ag is
- 30:24Speaker 1: standing behind him. Back in the bedroom, Ash is sitting
- 30:28Speaker 1: on the bed and Age's kind of sitting on the
- 30:30Speaker 1: floor next to him, and the scene is just illuminated
- 30:33Speaker 1: by the soft glow of like a table lamp, and
- 30:36Speaker 1: Ash says, I tried to forget former prostitute gang leader murderer,
- 30:42Speaker 1: and I still get shaken up. He's just kind of
- 30:45Speaker 1: looking down in a way, and AG's like, don't say
- 30:48Speaker 1: that about yourself. Ash looks over at Ag with like
- 30:54Speaker 1: fear in his eyes, like either he's afraid of what
- 30:56Speaker 1: he's going to tell AG or afraid of what happened.
- 31:00Speaker 1: And he says, the first time I killed someone, I
- 31:04Speaker 1: was eight years old. AG just kind of stares at Ash,
- 31:08Speaker 1: waiting for him to continue. He obviously knows this already,
- 31:11Speaker 1: but Ash doesn't know that he knows, and Ash says
- 31:15Speaker 1: he'd raped me. Tears start to stream down his face
- 31:18Speaker 1: and his eyes are like really wide, and he continues,
- 31:23Speaker 1: I was terrified, so scared. I couldn't find my voice.
- 31:27Speaker 1: My heart was screaming for help, but nothing came out.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I cried when I shot him because I didn't feel anything.
- 31:35Speaker 1: He stares down at his hands. I'm so scared of myself.
- 31:40Speaker 1: He starts to shake. I killed shorter. Tears start to
- 31:45Speaker 1: fall on his hands. I don't even know how many
- 31:48Speaker 1: people I've killed. I don't feel anything. Nothing. He puts
- 31:54Speaker 1: his hand over his face and he begins to sob.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Ag sits next to him on the and puts his
- 32:01Speaker 1: arm around him and says, Ash, it's okay, calm down.
- 32:05Speaker 1: You do feel it. You're hurt, really hurt, I can tell.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Ash is still sobbing. Ag continues, you saved my life,
- 32:13Speaker 1: so if you feel responsible, then I am too. Ash
- 32:18Speaker 1: takes his hand off his face and looks up at
- 32:20Speaker 1: Ag in confusion, and Ag says, you know, my words
- 32:25Speaker 1: might not meet anything right now, but just remember one thing.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Even if the world turns against you, I'll always be
- 32:32Speaker 1: on your side. Ash is so confused, and AG continues,
- 32:38Speaker 1: I'll stay by your side, that is, if you don't mind.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Ash wipes the tears from his eyes and he smiles,
- 32:48Speaker 1: and he says, does that mean I have to keep
- 32:50Speaker 1: eating those nasty sandwiches? Oh? He's bouncing back. AG's like,
- 32:55Speaker 1: that's right, lucky you. My tofu sandwiches are so good
- 32:58Speaker 1: for you. Your health is safe in mind, and before
- 33:00Speaker 1: he can finish, Ash just collapses into his lap, and
- 33:06Speaker 1: Ag is obviously stunned silence, and we see that Ash
- 33:14Speaker 1: is shaking and probably crying, but we can't see his
- 33:17Speaker 1: face because it's in AG's lap, and he says, stay
- 33:22Speaker 1: by my side. It doesn't have to be forever, even
- 33:26Speaker 1: if it's just for now. AG puts his hand on
- 33:31Speaker 1: Ash's back, and Ash cries, Yeah, we can stop there
- 33:37Speaker 1: for a second because I want to talk about some things. So,
- 33:41Speaker 1: first of all, this is the second time we've had
- 33:44Speaker 1: a lap pillow scene since I started doing the show.
- 33:49Speaker 1: The last one, if you remember, was from Ree zero
- 33:53Speaker 1: when Subaru cried into Amelia's lap and then he fell
- 33:56Speaker 1: asleep there and it kind of endeared everyone in the
- 34:00Speaker 1: showdomn in that arc in case you don't remember, the
- 34:05Speaker 1: episode was called I Cried, I cried my lungs out
- 34:08Speaker 1: and stopped crying, thanks for being so on the Nosary zero.
- 34:14Speaker 1: So they actually think this scene might have done the
- 34:18Speaker 1: same thing with Ag that it did with Amelia and
- 34:22Speaker 1: Rem and Ram in Ree zero, where that amount of
- 34:25Speaker 1: vulnerability deep in the connection between those characters basically, and
- 34:31Speaker 1: I think that's really important. Ash in this episode has
- 34:35Speaker 1: been an interesting dichotomy of you know, strength and harshness
- 34:40Speaker 1: and vulnerability. So that's kind of cool. And unfortunately we
- 34:47Speaker 1: lost something very important in this scene in the anime,
- 34:51Speaker 1: in my opinion, at least at the very end of
- 34:54Speaker 1: this scene. After Ash says you know, doesn't have to
- 34:59Speaker 1: be for just for now, Agy says forever, And that's
- 35:03Speaker 1: the end of the scene, which I think is important
- 35:05Speaker 1: and I would love to have back in. There are
- 35:07Speaker 1: a couple other things that are missing from the scene
- 35:09Speaker 1: as well. We get a little bit more detail of
- 35:12Speaker 1: what happened with Ash and that vets, but I guess
- 35:17Speaker 1: I really don't have to tell you about that stuff
- 35:19Speaker 1: because it'll only hurt you, so like, for instance, I
- 35:23Speaker 1: don't need to tell you that that veteran dude shoved
- 35:26Speaker 1: a towel and ash's mouth so we couldn't scream, and
- 35:29Speaker 1: he still remembers the taste of it, except I did
- 35:31Speaker 1: tell you, so now you know. Yay, high five. Sorry.
- 35:37Speaker 1: But the other thing in that scene that is so
- 35:39Speaker 1: interesting to me is his impression of himself. Like we've
- 35:43Speaker 1: seen in this episode, he's got, at some points like
- 35:47Speaker 1: a really balanced impression of himself, and at some points
- 35:49Speaker 1: it's so skewed, like him acknowledging that he's a murderer
- 35:54Speaker 1: and being like this fucking no such thing as an
- 35:56Speaker 1: honest murderer to fly, and then in this san not
- 36:01Speaker 1: understanding himself and saying that he doesn't feel anything, which
- 36:06Speaker 1: obviously he does. He's fucking crying, so he feels something.
- 36:10Speaker 1: But I'm wondering what he is feeling and what he
- 36:12Speaker 1: thinks he's supposed to feel. Right, So there are a
- 36:15Speaker 1: couple of things that could be happening here with him
- 36:19Speaker 1: that make him think that he doesn't feel anything that
- 36:21Speaker 1: aren't that he doesn't feel anything, because I don't think
- 36:23Speaker 1: that's true. Maybe he's dissociating, Maybe he has separated himself
- 36:29Speaker 1: so much from all of the terrible things in his
- 36:31Speaker 1: life that he doesn't feel the emotions associated with them anymore.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I think that could be a take. But in my opinion,
- 36:37Speaker 1: what I think is happening, and I was thinking about
- 36:40Speaker 1: this a couple of nights ago at like four am,
- 36:42Speaker 1: by the way, is that I think maybe he doesn't
- 36:46Speaker 1: feel like he has the emotions that he's supposed to
- 36:48Speaker 1: have here, Like maybe he thinks he's supposed to be
- 36:52Speaker 1: either really passionately angry killing these people or really like
- 36:56Speaker 1: warn them or something, and maybe what he's feeling is
- 37:00Speaker 1: relieved or just disgusted with himself. Maybe he doesn't feel
- 37:06Speaker 1: like his emotions that he absolutely does have are good
- 37:09Speaker 1: enough and justifiable enough, but they're definitely there all right.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Back to the episode, I guess. So it's dawn now.
- 37:20Speaker 1: We see the Statue of Liberty with the New York
- 37:23Speaker 1: City skyline in the background, and the sky is just
- 37:28Speaker 1: beginning to turn slightly blue. Ash is laying in bed
- 37:33Speaker 1: and he opens his eyes and he starts to sit up,
- 37:36Speaker 1: and he realizes that AG's head is resting on his stomach,
- 37:40Speaker 1: so they like switch places during the night. That's very cute,
- 37:43Speaker 1: and he kind of sighs in the mong he very
- 37:46Speaker 1: carefully picks up AG's head and puts it on the bed,
- 37:49Speaker 1: but we don't see that in the anime. So whatever,
- 37:53Speaker 1: The sun is coming up now over the buildings and
- 37:57Speaker 1: birds are chirping lightly, but over all the city is
- 38:00Speaker 1: like pretty quiet, kind of how it is in the
- 38:03Speaker 1: early morning hours. I would assume at least that's how
- 38:06Speaker 1: it is in other places in the early morning hours.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Ash sits on the windowsill and he just watches the sunrise,
- 38:14Speaker 1: and we see some really cute pigeons outside. We cut
- 38:17Speaker 1: to him typing something into a keyboard while Age is
- 38:21Speaker 1: sleeping soundly on the bed behind him. Oh no, he's
- 38:24Speaker 1: actually getting up now, and he says Ash. And Ash
- 38:29Speaker 1: is completely absorbed in whatever he's doing, and he's wearing glasses.
- 38:32Speaker 1: I guess he's far sighted. Yay, He says, did I
- 38:36Speaker 1: wake you? AG's like, oh, Ash says, go back to sleep.
- 38:41Speaker 1: It's still early. AG's like, what are you doing? Ash
- 38:46Speaker 1: says stealing. Ag sighs and scratches his head and walks
- 38:51Speaker 1: over to Ash and he's like, Ash, are you gonna
- 38:55Speaker 1: keep doing that stuff? Ash, who is still like barely
- 38:58Speaker 1: paying attention to Ag, says what stuff. AG's like, you know, gunfights,
- 39:03Speaker 1: all that stuff, and Ash says, you scared. Now. I'm
- 39:08Speaker 1: pretty sure that was not a nice check in, and
- 39:12Speaker 1: that was kind of sarcastic, but I still count it.
- 39:16Speaker 1: He said the thing. AG's like, I'm just saying that
- 39:21Speaker 1: being reckless isn't the only way to be brave. Cool, Ag,
- 39:24Speaker 1: you just said that to the bravest character in the show.
- 39:26Speaker 1: But whatever, I'm older than you, so you should listen.
- 39:29Speaker 1: And Ash is like, well, forgive me older brother. AG
- 39:33Speaker 1: starts to blush and he's like, why are you already
- 39:36Speaker 1: like this? You were just crying like a baby last night.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Ash takes off his glasses and finally turns to Ag
- 39:42Speaker 1: and he's like, come on, big brother, I'm really busy
- 39:46Speaker 1: right now. Could you get off my back. I'm glad
- 39:50Speaker 1: he's in a good mood. We cut to Ag pouring
- 39:53Speaker 1: coffee in the kitchen angrily and he thinks that Ash
- 39:57Speaker 1: and he kind of smiles. He's like, oh, well, he's
- 40:00Speaker 1: still a kid too, crying in my arms like that.
- 40:03Speaker 1: He takes a step of the coffee. We cut back
- 40:06Speaker 1: to Ash as he clicks the track pad and he
- 40:09Speaker 1: smiles deviously. I'll pause there and tell you that that
- 40:12Speaker 1: is what my tattoo is of, is of Ash stealing. Technically,
- 40:17Speaker 1: it's of a couple of panels that aren't represented in
- 40:19Speaker 1: the anime. Before Ag wakes up and he is doing
- 40:23Speaker 1: stuff on the computer, and even though the manga is
- 40:26Speaker 1: from the eighties, Ash did have a laptop. It was
- 40:30Speaker 1: a big, thick laptop, but he had one, and he
- 40:33Speaker 1: had like a printer and stuff, and he was printing
- 40:35Speaker 1: stuff out and all that stuff. So it's of that.
- 40:37Speaker 1: It's of two panels of Ash stealing. Why that in particular,
- 40:42Speaker 1: I will tell you at the end of the episode.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Next we go to Grand Central Oyster Bar and Restaurant.
- 40:48Speaker 1: We don't actually see the full sign, but I know
- 40:52Speaker 1: that that's where it is, so yes, and it is
- 40:55Speaker 1: a real restaurant that has been in Grand Central Station
- 40:59Speaker 1: since like the nineteenth Ortezer or something. And it's in
- 41:01Speaker 1: the original Manka too. It's always been Grand Central Oyster
- 41:04Speaker 1: Bar and Restaurant, which I'd like to go to now anyway.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Ash and Max are there at a table and Ash
- 41:12Speaker 1: is wearing like a blue sweater with glasses. He looks
- 41:16Speaker 1: kind of put together for Ash honestly, and Max has
- 41:20Speaker 1: a mustache which is probably fake but I'm not sure.
- 41:23Speaker 1: And he's wearing a suit and Max says, that's all
- 41:26Speaker 1: you're eating. Ash is like, I'm watching my weight. You
- 41:29Speaker 1: go ahead and pick out. Max looks irritated and he's like,
- 41:32Speaker 1: the hell, I will you just nibble on that leaf
- 41:34Speaker 1: like a little bunny. It really surprised me when your
- 41:37Speaker 1: boys came for me. How'd you find us? Max eats
- 41:40Speaker 1: some steak and Ash is like, where else would you be? Dad?
- 41:45Speaker 1: He eats an oyster and Max says, cut it out.
- 41:47Speaker 1: I am not old enough to be your dad dressing
- 41:49Speaker 1: me up like this, playing family? So what's going on?
- 41:53Speaker 1: Ash says, old Mandino's got the cops looking for me.
- 41:57Speaker 1: It's only a matter of time until they find me.
- 42:00Speaker 1: In the anime, we actually lost a scene here because
- 42:02Speaker 1: they originally met in the park in the manga and
- 42:05Speaker 1: Ash was stopped by the cops. He had a fake ID,
- 42:08Speaker 1: and Max appeared and basically saved him and was like,
- 42:12Speaker 1: oh son, But yeah, the cops are looking for him,
- 42:17Speaker 1: not only because he you know, jumped bail back then,
- 42:20Speaker 1: but also because they suspect that he started the fire
- 42:23Speaker 1: at Dino's mansion, which he did, but someone had to anyway.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Max says, if you're worried about ag, give him to us.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Ash looks away and like slightly pouts, and he's like,
- 42:35Speaker 1: he's safer with me. You guys can't protect him like
- 42:38Speaker 1: I can. Sure. Max is like, fine, have it your way.
- 42:43Speaker 1: So what now? Ash says, I'm buying a condo on
- 42:47Speaker 1: fifty ninth Avenue. I need you just signed the contract.
- 42:51Speaker 1: Max is like, what did you say? And Ash says,
- 42:54Speaker 1: I can't do it myself. I'm a kid. Max is like,
- 42:58Speaker 1: but how are you going to pay for it? That's
- 43:01Speaker 1: a good question, and he looks surprised all of a sudden,
- 43:07Speaker 1: and we see that Ash has the most devious look
- 43:09Speaker 1: on his face and his fingers are more or less crossed.
- 43:12Speaker 1: He's smirking, and Max is like, what did you do?
- 43:17Speaker 1: We cut to Gregory, who slams the door open and
- 43:20Speaker 1: he's like Papa Dino is staring out of the window
- 43:24Speaker 1: on the other side of the room, and he says,
- 43:25Speaker 1: what is it now. Gregory's like, we just got a
- 43:29Speaker 1: call from the New York Stock Exchange. Our company, Webster
- 43:32Speaker 1: e Com stocks have plummeted since the opening this morning.
- 43:35Speaker 1: Dino turns like freaked out, and he's like, what we
- 43:38Speaker 1: cut back to the restaurant, Ash says, it's nothing. I
- 43:42Speaker 1: just sent fake selling orders to the main stock brokerages,
- 43:46Speaker 1: lots of them back to Dino. Some other dude opens
- 43:51Speaker 1: the door now frantically and he's like, Papa, big trouble.
- 43:54Speaker 1: And Dino's like, now what. And some other guy's like
- 43:58Speaker 1: the money and Goose has all been wired somewhere overseas.
- 44:01Speaker 1: It's all gone. Dino is shook. Back to the restaurant,
- 44:07Speaker 1: Ash continues, there are five companies and tax havens that
- 44:11Speaker 1: are all owned by the Corsican Foundation that Dino is
- 44:13Speaker 1: a part of. He like draws a map of the world,
- 44:16Speaker 1: maybe the back of a menu or something. I don't
- 44:18Speaker 1: really know, he continues. They're known collectively as Goose, which
- 44:23Speaker 1: is an acronym based on each of the countries that
- 44:25Speaker 1: they're located in's initials. But they don't really exist. The
- 44:30Speaker 1: Foundation has a number of shell companies like these to
- 44:32Speaker 1: disperse their profits and evade taxes. Goose is the largest,
- 44:35Speaker 1: though it is a total of ninety million dollars a
- 44:39Speaker 1: year passing through it, and I took it yay. We
- 44:45Speaker 1: cut back to Dino, who was staring out the window
- 44:47Speaker 1: again but sweating this time, and someone's like someone accessed
- 44:52Speaker 1: it from outside. Dino says, no, we couldn't have been hacked,
- 44:55Speaker 1: and another guy's like, well, actually, it seems like your
- 44:58Speaker 1: credentials were used for the transaction, Papa, and Tino's like what,
- 45:03Speaker 1: but I'm the only one who knows the password, And
- 45:05Speaker 1: just as he starts to figure out what happened, we
- 45:07Speaker 1: cut back to Ash, who says only his favorite pets
- 45:10Speaker 1: were allowed in his bedroom. We cut to Max, who
- 45:14Speaker 1: looks totally horrified or stunned or impressed or something, and
- 45:18Speaker 1: Ash continues, while the perverted old guy was enjoying the sex,
- 45:22Speaker 1: I had my mind on other things. Fuck Ash, for real,
- 45:26Speaker 1: he never imagined his pet would plant spyware on his computer.
- 45:30Speaker 1: It's dirty money to begin with. I love Ash just
- 45:33Speaker 1: casually dropping in his dissociation into the discussion, like it's
- 45:37Speaker 1: no big deal. And Max is like, so, it looks
- 45:40Speaker 1: like he caused major damage to the foundation and he'll
- 45:42Speaker 1: have to go and explain it to the dons now, huh,
- 45:45Speaker 1: And Ash says, bingo. Max is like, you know, for
- 45:49Speaker 1: the first time, you're really scaring me. If the devil
- 45:52Speaker 1: really exists, I think he'd look just like you. Ash's
- 45:56Speaker 1: eyes narrow, and he's like, anyway, he won't be able
- 45:59Speaker 1: to make a move for a while. Now. He sets
- 46:02Speaker 1: his cell phone on the table and it has that
- 46:04Speaker 1: article about Senator Grant being stabbed open on it, and
- 46:08Speaker 1: he says, I want you to look into this. The
- 46:11Speaker 1: secretary was controlled by banana fish. Max gasps, but come on,
- 46:15Speaker 1: he must have known. We then cut to Max signing
- 46:19Speaker 1: closing paperwork on a condo under the name of Eddie Winston,
- 46:24Speaker 1: and a woman who is probably a realtor says, thank you,
- 46:27Speaker 1: mister Winston. I'll be right back with the documents. She leaps.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Max is looking around this crazy, huge apartment and he says,
- 46:36Speaker 1: I feel like a celebrity, even though it's not my money,
- 46:38Speaker 1: buying an eight million dollar condo in cash. He goes
- 46:42Speaker 1: to what I guess is the bedroom and opens the door,
- 46:44Speaker 1: and he sees that Ash is staring out the window
- 46:47Speaker 1: and he's like, what are you looking at? Ash says,
- 46:51Speaker 1: the Corsican Foundation owns that building, which he's pointing to
- 46:54Speaker 1: the building right next door, and Max is like, what damn,
- 47:01Speaker 1: you're bold. But if they find you. Ash says, there's
- 47:05Speaker 1: a gym in a supermarket downstairs. I don't even have
- 47:07Speaker 1: to leave the building for anything. And Max is like,
- 47:10Speaker 1: but EJ has a pretty aggressive side. Do you think
- 47:12Speaker 1: he'll agree to be cooped up here? Ash is like,
- 47:15Speaker 1: he has to. We cut to them walking down the
- 47:18Speaker 1: street and Ash says, don't tell anybody about the condo yet.
- 47:22Speaker 1: We have to lay low for now. Max is like,
- 47:25Speaker 1: and what are you gonna do? Ash says, it's better
- 47:29Speaker 1: if you don't know. Just look into what I asked you.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Let's get to the bottom of things. They are stopped
- 47:34Speaker 1: at a crosswalk now and Max looks down and he says,
- 47:40Speaker 1: to be honest with you, I'm actually really scared. I
- 47:44Speaker 1: feel like we're gonna uncover something that we shouldn't know about.
- 47:48Speaker 1: And Ash says it's too late now. He at this
- 47:52Speaker 1: point is on the stairs going down to the subway,
- 47:55Speaker 1: and he says, later, Dad, I'll call you. He starts
- 47:59Speaker 1: to walk off. Now we see Max walking by himself
- 48:03Speaker 1: and he thinks, Ash, there's something I couldn't tell you.
- 48:07Speaker 1: It's too dangerous for you to stay with ag. He's
- 48:10Speaker 1: your Achilles heel, I'm afraid that someday. At this point,
- 48:15Speaker 1: the ending theme starts up and we cut back to
- 48:17Speaker 1: Dino and he says, I'll give you one last chance.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Arthur looks super surprised at this. Dino continues, I'm leaving
- 48:25Speaker 1: the States to attend to some business. You'll have full control.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Catch that boy. Arthur smiles. Dino says, you can cut
- 48:33Speaker 1: off all his limbs for all I care, but keep
- 48:35Speaker 1: him alive. I will attend to him. The moment I
- 48:38Speaker 1: get back, I'll strangle him with my own hands. Geez.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Arthur smiles super widely at this, and then we cut
- 48:45Speaker 1: to him with the gang and he says, it's time
- 48:48Speaker 1: for war. There's no turning back now that you're with me,
- 48:51Speaker 1: got it? And everyone's like, yeah, Arthur thinks I'll stomp
- 48:55Speaker 1: the life out of you for sure. This time Ash,
- 48:58Speaker 1: we cut to Ash, who is on the subway. He
- 49:01Speaker 1: has a hood up and he's wearing sunglasses, and he's
- 49:04Speaker 1: sitting a little bit away from one of Arthur's guys,
- 49:08Speaker 1: who I'm pretty sure is the same dude who kidnapped
- 49:12Speaker 1: ag and Skip in the first episode, at least one
- 49:16Speaker 1: of them, And I think his name is a Wookie,
- 49:18Speaker 1: which we don't get his name until a little bit later,
- 49:21Speaker 1: but I'm just gonna tell you that because we might
- 49:23Speaker 1: as well say it anyway. The train stops and Alex
- 49:28Speaker 1: and Bones get on, but they don't acknowledge Ash and
- 49:31Speaker 1: Bones is like, I feel so sick, and Alex sits
- 49:35Speaker 1: Bones down and he's like, you're so drunk. They are
- 49:39Speaker 1: now approaching the forty second Street Times Square stop and
- 49:43Speaker 1: Ash walks over to the doors to get off, and
- 49:47Speaker 1: Wookie is sitting in the seat next to the doors.
- 49:51Speaker 1: The train stops and Ash pulls down his hood and
- 49:55Speaker 1: sunglasses and he smiles at Wookie. Wookie gasps and he
- 50:00Speaker 1: gets up to go after him, but at that point
- 50:02Speaker 1: Bones and Alex knock into him, knocking him back a
- 50:05Speaker 1: little bit because Bones is gonna throw up and they
- 50:07Speaker 1: gotta get off the train. The doors close before what
- 50:10Speaker 1: he can get off, and he looks really surprised, I guess,
- 50:16Speaker 1: and upset because I guess he couldn't get off the
- 50:18Speaker 1: train to follow Ash. But then he falls to the
- 50:20Speaker 1: ground because he is really surprised because he got stabbed
- 50:23Speaker 1: in the back. Yay, I guess. Passengers gather around and
- 50:28Speaker 1: somebody screams, and we cut to Ash walking past the
- 50:32Speaker 1: train as it takes off again, and then we get
- 50:34Speaker 1: the title card, the beautiful and damned Yay, we did it.
- 50:40Speaker 1: So closing thoughts, I think I did a better take
- 50:43Speaker 1: than the last take, but you'll never know now because
- 50:46Speaker 1: you're only gonna hear this one. So I covered most
- 50:49Speaker 1: of the stuff I wanted to talk about during the episode,
- 50:52Speaker 1: which was the plan this time. But I did say
- 50:55Speaker 1: I was gonna talk about my tattoo, so let's talk
- 50:58Speaker 1: about that because that is important to me, and maybe
- 51:01Speaker 1: to you. You don't care about my tattoo, but whatever.
- 51:04Speaker 1: So specifically, why I got these two panels of Ash
- 51:09Speaker 1: on the computer and then Ash drinking some coffee and
- 51:13Speaker 1: looking pretty intense. I mean, the reason that I got
- 51:16Speaker 1: this particular set of panels on my arm is that
- 51:20Speaker 1: I wanted something that wasn't true traumatic and conveyed something
- 51:25Speaker 1: important to me. And this act of stealing to me
- 51:30Speaker 1: feels like the culmination of a very long and incredibly
- 51:35Speaker 1: dedicated plan. As we heard when he was talking to Max,
- 51:40Speaker 1: doing this has been in his mind for years. He
- 51:44Speaker 1: has been working towards bringing Dino down for as long
- 51:49Speaker 1: as he has known him, basically, and this particular episode
- 51:56Speaker 1: is kind of when I went from thinking Ash was
- 51:59Speaker 1: a pretty cool character to being like, oh my god,
- 52:02Speaker 1: I fucking love this kid, because I really see Ash
- 52:06Speaker 1: as a survivor, someone who decided that he was going
- 52:09Speaker 1: to do everything he possibly could to get out of
- 52:14Speaker 1: a really terrible situation and to bring Dino down like
- 52:17Speaker 1: it all fucking costs, And yeah, I really really like
- 52:22Speaker 1: him for that. Also, I'm wondering if the timeline with
- 52:27Speaker 1: him deciding to take down the company and steal all
- 52:30Speaker 1: that money the day that he did, I wonder if
- 52:33Speaker 1: he was influenced by AG's faith in him and AG's
- 52:37Speaker 1: saying that he was going to stay by his side
- 52:39Speaker 1: no matter what. Like he got up, like he had
- 52:42Speaker 1: a really good cry and he felt a little bit better,
- 52:46Speaker 1: and then he was like, it's time to take him down.
- 52:49Speaker 1: So anyway, I don't really have anything else to say
- 52:53Speaker 1: about that except that I just think that his drive
- 52:56Speaker 1: and his will to survive through this are just super
- 52:59Speaker 1: fucking And he did this all knowing that Dino was
- 53:04Speaker 1: going to know immediately that it was him, because who
- 53:08Speaker 1: else could it be. He doesn't fucking care This is
- 53:11Speaker 1: about making this man pay for what he's fucking done
- 53:14Speaker 1: to his friends and to him for all of these years.
- 53:18Speaker 1: And I respect Ash so much for doing that. Of course,
- 53:24Speaker 1: in the manga, there was no spyware. It's the eighties,
- 53:27Speaker 1: so I assume he just got onto Dino's computer a
- 53:30Speaker 1: bunch of times. That's not like any eighties everyone was
- 53:32Speaker 1: changing their passwords all the time, so I'm sure he
- 53:35Speaker 1: had it and then like that was it. And I'm
- 53:37Speaker 1: sure the password was like password or like one two, three, four,
- 53:40Speaker 1: five six or something. But still, so that's why I
- 53:43Speaker 1: have that tattoo, yeah or something. Also, if you were
- 53:48Speaker 1: confused about how he bought in apartments, that's fine. In
- 53:51Speaker 1: the manga, it seems he hacked into that broker's like
- 53:56Speaker 1: database or whatever the hell, and I guess that he
- 53:59Speaker 1: input fake information because otherwise I don't really know how
- 54:02Speaker 1: that would work. So good for him. But I think
- 54:06Speaker 1: that's pretty much it. I think I've said everything that
- 54:08Speaker 1: I needed to say here. The only thing that I
- 54:12Speaker 1: will say that I feel like I probably shouldn't say
- 54:15Speaker 1: is is, Hey, I really want to go to Grand
- 54:17Speaker 1: Central Oyster Bar and Restaurant. Do you want to take
- 54:20Speaker 1: a field trip with me, because I totally would do that.
- 54:24Speaker 1: If any of you live close enough to New York
- 54:26Speaker 1: City where you just want to go to Grand Central
- 54:29Speaker 1: Station and go to an oyster bar restaurant, we could
- 54:34Speaker 1: totally do that. Maybe we could go to one other
- 54:36Speaker 1: place that's located somewhere in the area or not. Yeah,
- 54:41Speaker 1: I don't know. I think that sounds like a bad
- 54:43Speaker 1: idea now that I've said it, But hey, i'd be
- 54:46Speaker 1: down if you're down, But you'd have to actually let
- 54:49Speaker 1: me know that, because otherwise, how would we communicate if
- 54:54Speaker 1: we don't talk to each other. So if it's something
- 54:58Speaker 1: you'd be interested in, like we could organize like a
- 55:01Speaker 1: little field trip. Oh god, yeah, I know, I know.
- 55:06Speaker 1: I understand that this is weird and that I'm weird.
- 55:08Speaker 1: I get it. But if that's something you'd be down for,
- 55:11Speaker 1: you'd have to email me and tell me. So my
- 55:14Speaker 1: email is always in the show notes. It's the thing
- 55:17Speaker 1: that looks like an email, So feel free to or
- 55:21Speaker 1: not pretend you didn't hear this. I think I got
- 55:26Speaker 1: everything I needed to say out, So I'm gonna go
- 55:30Speaker 1: and I hope you have a really good whatever, and
- 55:34Speaker 1: I will probably see you next time, unless this is
- 55:37Speaker 1: this is it for you, and in that case bye
- 55:40Speaker 1: forever Later webs
