Transcript
- 0:00Hello there. It's most things Kenobi.
- 0:04This is the podcast you're looking for.
- 0:19Hey everyone, welcome to another episode of most things Kenobi.
- 0:22A podcast about Obi-Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:26I am your host Leanne and I'm your host Lauren and as we
- 0:30always do. Thank you.
- 0:31James Arnold Taylor for the wonderful intro.
- 0:34We will never get sick of thanking you and we will never
- 0:36get sick of your voice. Thank you very much for doing
- 0:38our intros, as always. So this week, we have a very fun
- 0:43topic. I'm totally excited.
- 0:46Oh my God, the the title of the episode basically says it all.
- 0:53Dave filoni is a goddamn genius and of episode.
- 0:57Thanks for being here. Ladies and gentlemen, have a
- 0:59great week. Thanks.
- 1:00See you next week. No.
- 1:03But for real though, what is the meme and filoni we trust in
- 1:08filoni? We Trust.
- 1:09Well, the t-shirt that started it all my t-shirt.
- 1:13It is. Hashtag filoni gets it.
- 1:15And by filoni gets it. We mean Star Wars.
- 1:18We seriously should All a t-shirt that says that on it, I
- 1:21mean, it's nothing but praise and he deserves it, he totally
- 1:24deserves it. Absolutely, I don't know,
- 1:26someone like who deserves their own t-shirt more than day phony,
- 1:30right? He's a basically our hero.
- 1:33We love him. We appreciate his artistic
- 1:37genius, his knowledge of Star Wars his bond with George Lucas
- 1:42himself. He just he's a, he's a master at
- 1:45his his craft and it shows. Yes.
- 1:49In fact, we're not the only ones who think, so the Emmy
- 1:53nominations were actually just announced.
- 1:55And to, of Dave filoni these projects, one, the Mandalorian
- 2:00notched 24 nominations and the Clone Wars themselves season
- 2:05seven, right? Three Emmy nods, which deserves
- 2:09to win everything season. Seven wins all categories.
- 2:13I don't care what it is. I just think the things that we
- 2:19As fans have seen is he's finally getting the wreck the
- 2:22kind of recognition that he deserves.
- 2:24Yeah, I mean, if you think he deserves to have some trophies
- 2:28in my mind he's perfect without any, you know, it's great to be
- 2:32honored, you know, on paper, in this way.
- 2:34But he was a goddamn genius before the Emmys came around.
- 2:37So yes, he's pretty much been a genius since he was young, I
- 2:41would say. Yeah, he worked us Last
- 2:44Airbender before he works clone wars and that is one of my
- 2:48favorite animated. It shows ever, I just finished
- 2:52re-watching, the whole thing recently and my God, it's so
- 2:55good and it's good. I mean, I'm sure it would have
- 2:58been good anyway, but having his touch on the show and like his
- 3:03interpretations of Mythology and Anime and all of that stuff.
- 3:07It's just like, it's particularly special been
- 3:09filling. He gets his hands on a project.
- 3:11Yes, I completely agree. And so I mean for those who, if
- 3:16you don't know who he is by now, I can't help you but Dave filoni
- 3:22is basically The Mastermind behind the Clone Wars and a part
- 3:26of the team that put together the, the Mandalorian, of course,
- 3:30now the bad batch and many other side projects that are soon to
- 3:34come. Yeah, of course you and I love
- 3:36the Clone Wars and then Clone Wars was saved which you and I
- 3:40were at the panel that Dave filoni was at when he announced
- 3:43season 7 was a thing. Yes, we were very emotional.
- 3:48There's so many Means to love the man, but I have a personal
- 3:52connection to him. He doesn't know this.
- 3:55He doesn't know. I have a personal connection but
- 3:57I wish she did. Maybe someday, he'll know, maybe
- 4:00someday, he'll know, but Dave were Hometown buddies.
- 4:03We're Penguins fans because we're both from the Pittsburgh
- 4:06area. Now he's from Mount Lebanon,
- 4:07which is south of Pittsburgh and I'm from undisclosed location,
- 4:11north of Pittsburgh. But, I mean, as you know,
- 4:16Lauren, the penguins are my hometown.
- 4:19Hockey team. Oh yeah, I'm currently wearing.
- 4:21Let's see. It says, Steel City, May the
- 4:23force be with you ins and it's from a company called shop.
- 4:27Steel City, go check them out, not affiliated, not sponsored,
- 4:30but we love them me and Dave, Dave and I was like, I don't
- 4:34know, I don't know what that is, but it sucks not.
- 4:37But the the craziest thing was like, the craziest thing that
- 4:41and this is what I wish I could talk to Dave.
- 4:43First of all, I want to talk to him about some of the crazy
- 4:44trades that have happened in the past 23 years, with our team, I
- 4:48could get Dave, hit me up. I need to know your opinion on
- 4:52the horn Quest trade. I think he'd probably be very
- 4:55happy to have someone to finally talk hockey where instead of
- 4:59Star Wars with yes, but the thing that killed me was you've
- 5:04seen me wear this shirt. It says, just play and it's four
- 5:08lines and has check marks. And what it is is our Penguins
- 5:13coach doing the just play the four games and then the next
- 5:16four games. Next the the 16 games you need,
- 5:19Need to win to win a Stanley Cup.
- 5:21Okay, and I found this shirt so hard when I saw a
- 5:24behind-the-scenes photo of Dave filoni wearing that same shirt.
- 5:29I said, shut up. He got the same shirt, I know
- 5:33the trouble, he went through to get that shirt because I went
- 5:35through the trouble to get that shirt but it warmed my heart.
- 5:38But yeah, he's where it's just nice and like Pittsburgh shirts
- 5:42all the time, you see any always has a pens hat on, you know,
- 5:45it's like it makes me happy to see if it's not a place.
- 5:49Khun or a wolf pack shirt or hat.
- 5:51It's a, it's a Pittsburgh at or at one time when it was all,
- 5:55like a Soca lives. Right.
- 5:57Like, the Ahsoka lives shirt that you like he like flipped?
- 5:59Yeah, Dave's a character. He's got the Hat.
- 6:01He's got that smile. Yeah.
- 6:04When I always joke that the Emoji, the like cowboy Emoji is
- 6:07actually a day filoni Emoji. Yes.
- 6:10And you. And I have used that when we
- 6:11were talking and praising, Dave, filoni about stuff.
- 6:14We use the cowboy Emoji. Yes.
- 6:15I love when people cosplay Dave filoni.
- 6:18I like that. That is amazing.
- 6:19So smart, it's like so clever and witty and it's delightful.
- 6:24I mean, you can pick them literally out of a crowd.
- 6:26Yeah. By the hat and that smile, you
- 6:29know what I mean? He's so great too.
- 6:31And he's so like humble and mild-mannered and just truly
- 6:37delightful to listen to. I've heard him say in a bunch of
- 6:39interviews that he doesn't think he's interesting.
- 6:42He thinks his wife is way more fascinating.
- 6:44She's a writer. Actually, she wrote one of the
- 6:46stories in the Clone Wars collection of It's stories.
- 6:49They released sort of recently. But anytime I hear him talk,
- 6:53even if it's about nothing Star Wars related.
- 6:56I think he's really fascinating and he's really funny.
- 6:59He is just a delightful person. You can tell he knows what he's
- 7:03talking about, you know, you can tell the difference between
- 7:06someone who kind of fumbles their way through something, but
- 7:09Davis thoughtful. He's thought about these things,
- 7:11he understands if you ever taught hear him talk about like
- 7:15even the prequels, some of the things he said to discuss, like
- 7:18how This makes sense and how the vision, you know, things that
- 7:21tie together and he gets it, he dies, he just hasn't
- 7:27understanding. I think an understanding maybe
- 7:30that's tied into some of us like original trilogy people.
- 7:33Hmm. You know, where there's that.
- 7:35Respect for the original trilogy, but then, you can
- 7:37Branch out and make the story richer, and, and even grander
- 7:41than it already is without losing the things.
- 7:44We love about Star Wars, which is the story, the heart, the
- 7:47heart and soul, You know, the difficult choices and of course
- 7:50the sadness and pain. I just heard I was rude watching
- 7:53some interviews with him that are some of my particular
- 7:56favorites and he was talking about how they went really dark
- 7:59on some of the episodes in Clone Wars and people liked that.
- 8:03But he said, like, if you get too dark, can you really call it
- 8:07Star Wars anymore? Because it's supposed to be an
- 8:09adventurer and hope. Yes, it should always be hopeful
- 8:15and that comes from the original trilogy.
- 8:18He even said it, Does because he was like if we go really dark on
- 8:22our platter lines, are you still coming away with that feeling
- 8:24you had after watching a new hope?
- 8:27You know, that's what he is always striving for and trying
- 8:30to help people relive that excitement that they felt when
- 8:33they first saw the original trilogy back in the 70s and 80s.
- 8:37And I think that's why he's really successful with Star Wars
- 8:40is because he's a fan, and even said it wasn't, he wasn't even a
- 8:44fan, he was just a kid and all kids back in the 70s.
- 8:49Star Wars fans. It was just like a way of life.
- 8:51So yes, it really shows in his work.
- 8:54I think he's just another fan like us.
- 8:57He just happens to have that artistic side and made it work
- 9:00and produced some really amazing content, seriously.
- 9:03And when you look back at his path of how he ended up, you
- 9:06know, as an executive producer, lucasfilm, considering he grew
- 9:10up as a huge Star Wars fan, I don't know if you believe in
- 9:14manifesting, anybody out there listening.
- 9:16But talk about a crazy pathway. I mean, Everything lined up
- 9:19perfectly and even has the story right where he's working on Last
- 9:23Airbender. He loves the show.
- 9:25He's really passionate about it and is sitting in the office one
- 9:28day and a friend says, what is it that would pull you away from
- 9:31this show? Like what could entice you away
- 9:33and he said well if George Lucas called maybe I'd go work for
- 9:37him. Literally one week later got a
- 9:40phone call from lucasfilm. That's amazing.
- 9:43I mean it's meant to be and he thought it was somebody pranking
- 9:46him playing a joke on him because it was Lucasfilm
- 9:49animation and he's like, there is no such thing.
- 9:51Who is this, you know, who you calling me?
- 9:54Is there a chance that I could manifest talking to Dave?
- 9:57Because, oh my God. Please.
- 9:59I would love to maybe have questions we you and I we put
- 10:04our Collective space to an energy together.
- 10:06I think might make it happen. We can do this, I can do this.
- 10:09Hey fans listeners. Yeah help us everybody
- 10:13Collective energy. Get Dave filoni Collective
- 10:15energy? The thing and Dave also comes
- 10:17from a musical background. And his father was deep into
- 10:21musical production and his mom was a singer and his mom's a
- 10:24singer. So I mean, he get, he's
- 10:26obviously inherited some artistic side but he's also an
- 10:31incredible artist, his sketches that we saw it at the Clone Wars
- 10:35panel alone, which is what we thought we were going to get.
- 10:38That was all we were going to get, right?
- 10:40No. Some reminiscing over the past
- 10:4210 years which would have sufficed.
- 10:43I would have been totally happy with my gosh.
- 10:45Yes Dave showing some sketches private SketchBook.
- 10:49Yeah, the voice actors and actresses there.
- 10:51That was enough to fill my soul. And then and then this happened
- 10:57well on the way. He said it too.
- 10:59Is like, you've all been. So great over the years.
- 11:01We just want to, I know, give you a little something, here's
- 11:04a, little something for you, a little something.
- 11:06Yeah, I was like, JY re-watch that recently, full-body chills,
- 11:10like, yeah, till I feel that emotion, even though I've
- 11:14watched it, I lived through it first and then I requested it.
- 11:19Multiple times and I still get those full body chill.
- 11:21And like, I seriously like cried pretty hard.
- 11:26Yeah. No, I we well, we were, we were
- 11:28in good company. Yeah.
- 11:29I mean, everybody there lost their shit.
- 11:32Yeah, it was rightfully, so, and we had another friend who was in
- 11:35the back who actually he came in later, right?
- 11:39Because he his other panel finished.
- 11:41He came in and sat way, way way in the back, and he's like,
- 11:44well, I'll just chill here until you know, because the girls are
- 11:46here and then when we're all done.
- 11:47Well, then go get lunch or something.
- 11:49And he couldn't believe the reaction and he said, he didn't
- 11:52have any idea what was going on because he didn't, he's a Star
- 11:56Wars fan, but he hadn't seen Clone Wars, but he was
- 11:58interested. But he said he felt like an
- 12:01energy in that room that when it exploded, when they announce
- 12:04season 7. So I mean, I bet they could have
- 12:07filled Hall, h, didn't have to have one of those small rooms.
- 12:09They could have filled Hall age. They could have filled all age
- 12:12especially if they had said there was a trailer coming.
- 12:16Oh my God, I'm actually glad they kept it the way it was.
- 12:20Yeah, it was very intimate. We had no idea and then like
- 12:24Dave, with his tiny little subtle smirk and, you know, tip
- 12:28of the hat and they were gone and the rest of us, lost our
- 12:31mind, so it was great. It was, it was great.
- 12:33Yeah, I saw the follow-up to that later.
- 12:36Well, I guess it was the next spring I went to Star Wars
- 12:40celebration in Chicago. Yeah, that's where I live.
- 12:44It was easy. I don't have to travel so it
- 12:47was, it was awesome. And they did fill a huge
- 12:51Auditorium. It was so much fun.
- 12:53It was terrible. Whether it was April and there
- 12:56was like a blizzard it was nuts. It's not freezing cold freezing,
- 13:00I won't stop a Star Wars fan. I did not stop.
- 13:03I still don't know. Probe the hour into the City and
- 13:05like stood outside in the freezing winter weather just so
- 13:09I could get into that particular auditory.
- 13:12I was not going to miss it, no matter what and I remember you
- 13:15sending me texts and videos from that and it It looked, I mean it
- 13:20was that was a huge venue. It was huge that it's an
- 13:22auditorium. It's a giant convention center
- 13:24with the giant arena in it. Hmm.
- 13:27Yeah. It was great.
- 13:28It was fun. And I think that was a great
- 13:30panel to because that one had filoni and Ashley Eckstein.
- 13:35Sam Witwer. Matt Lanter James Arnold Taylor
- 13:37was there to Dee. Bradley Baker, was there.
- 13:39It was awesome. It was all the like major cast
- 13:41members, all the great. Yes.
- 13:44And of course, they embarrassed. Dave, everybody started
- 13:46complimenting him course if you like Hat over his face.
- 13:50It was right. I love him.
- 13:52Oh my God, I love it. So obviously we're Clone Wars
- 13:55lovers and when the Mandalorian came out, it was a little
- 13:58different. It was a little different you.
- 14:00And I we didn't immediately like fall for the Mandalorian.
- 14:03We, I thought it was a little bit clunky at first.
- 14:06I didn't lose hope but I didn't quite know where it was going.
- 14:09Yeah but by season two, I thought they took they really
- 14:12turned around it became more artistic, less clunky and of
- 14:16course the Luke that just And Luke moment at the end that just
- 14:21sealed the deal for, for just about every every true Star Wars
- 14:25fan, you know, who found themselves crying.
- 14:30But now, he's attracting a wider audience.
- 14:32My own mother who is gasp not a Star Wars fan but she loves the
- 14:38Mandalorian. Yeah, and I mean, she telephones
- 14:42me and called now who's this, and what's the importance and
- 14:46who are those guys in the white and why can't they hit anything?
- 14:48They shoot and said, yeah, yeah, typical typical Star Wars
- 14:53questions to a newbie, but she finds she fight.
- 14:58Well, I mean, we're all from the Pittsburgh area, so she has that
- 15:01angle to, but yeah, you know, she really digs it and she has
- 15:05respect for anyone who can pull in an audience member, who has
- 15:07no clue. What's going on and still enjoy
- 15:10the show. Yeah, so, you know, there's
- 15:11something to be said, and I know it's not just Dave filoni,
- 15:14there's a whole team of geniuses true.
- 15:17You know cinematic? Yeah.
- 15:18Science behind it. But yeah, but he's the executive
- 15:21producer on there, so he's, yeah, lot of.
- 15:23Say, in the book, The Story I was listening to an interviewer
- 15:28is talking about how they would prepare for clone wars.
- 15:30And I wonder how similar it is to what they do for Mandalorian,
- 15:34but he said before a season would start.
- 15:36He and all the writers and producers would go into a room
- 15:40with George, Lucas for like two weeks and they would literally
- 15:43have died. Oh my God.
- 15:45Jimmy so exhausted from a die. Statement, they would plan out
- 15:52an entire season each script for every episode, 24 episodes, or
- 15:57whatever it is in a two-week period.
- 15:59He said they had to do like three episodes a day, do you
- 16:02imagine that? I mean it must have been so
- 16:04exciting but totally draining at the same time but how gratifying
- 16:09at the end when you when you go through all that and then you
- 16:11put something together like that.
- 16:12I mean all of those voice actors and producers and animators
- 16:15should be hella proud of themselves.
- 16:17Yes, damn seriously. It's a Incredible body of work
- 16:20that they've produced, but he would say that while they were
- 16:23discussing plots and scripts he would be not doodling, but like
- 16:27drawing it and coming up with concept art in the room as
- 16:32they're talking about it and he has all these sketches that he
- 16:37would just look kind of some of them actually became concept art
- 16:40and some of it which is like going to a binder that he was
- 16:42going to throw away. Or I would love to see that
- 16:45binder. Yeah.
- 16:46Oh my God, I to own a piece. The Dave filoni art would be a
- 16:51life goal. I would hang it up next to my
- 16:54hockey stick and all my penguin hats that I put on it.
- 16:57We go somewhere between the hockey sticks and the
- 16:59lightsabers. It would go perfectly right
- 17:01between them a true fan room. Yeah.
- 17:04Right here. Worlds, Collide.
- 17:06Yes, I just really appreciate his vision and I know because
- 17:13I've seen some people aren't happy with some of his choices.
- 17:18Yeah. So, I know there aren't not
- 17:20everyone's a true DieHard like you and I are and I don't think
- 17:24you and I aren't really will call something out when we need
- 17:27to. Yeah, you know, hmm, But I
- 17:30really think in this case, Dave gets no call outs, but positive,
- 17:33once I mean, there have been a few choices that I'm not crazy
- 17:38about. But that's, I mean, considering
- 17:41the like I just said, the volume of work that comes out of there.
- 17:45Considering there's only like, a couple of things.
- 17:47I'm like, what? In fine, without that.
- 17:50I think that's pretty impressive.
- 17:52Most of it, I'm just like, oh my God.
- 17:53So good. Yeah, really as a person, who's
- 17:56like, spent my entire life writing and storytelling, I'm
- 18:00studying film in school and like critical analysis of film.
- 18:03On top of like production, I just really have a deep respect
- 18:07for the excellent storytelling and I'm sure like, we've
- 18:11discussed, I'm sure it comes from him having a similar
- 18:13background in the kind of things that interested in him as a kid
- 18:17is, so maybe that's why I Late to his work.
- 18:20But he told this great story about how he was like a junior
- 18:24in high school painting and had like a little paint Studio set
- 18:28up in his basement with like sheets up so that people
- 18:31couldn't see him while he was working on his painting.
- 18:33Oh that's cute. And he was painting a piece of
- 18:37art from The Lord of the Rings. He was doing a Owen and the is
- 18:41the pitcher about badass. Yeah.
- 18:43Is it white skin or Witcher King?
- 18:46It's which king she kills chic. And in the most fabulous fashion
- 18:50ever, right? So he said that, that part of
- 18:53that book was really formative to his early childhood and like
- 18:58taught him that women can do anything.
- 19:01They're just as strong as men and that's why he's been able to
- 19:05incorporate. So many strong, female
- 19:07characters into the Star Wars Universe because of Lord of the
- 19:09Rings and tolkien's vision of strong women, you know, being
- 19:16yes. The battle-hardened bad acid.
- 19:18Yes, Yes. Yes, I have chills.
- 19:20I have Goosebumps by the way, all the way up and down my legs
- 19:24because Dave we have another commonality and it was gonna say
- 19:27you're also super the rain expand.
- 19:30It was hugely formative. In my formative years, it was it
- 19:33was life-changing. When I first read those books I
- 19:36was in high school and the Aon in which king seen was to this
- 19:41day one of the greatest surprises, I guess in
- 19:44literature. But one of the most empowering
- 19:48as a female Male to read that. You essentially for those who
- 19:51don't know about it or haven't read it or haven't seen the
- 19:54movies, they did do it in the movies.
- 19:55They did it. Well in the movies Aon fights
- 19:58and she's not supposed to because she's she needs to stay
- 20:01home and take care of the Kingdom while the men go out and
- 20:03fight, but she disguises herself as a man goes out and fight and
- 20:06the biggest bad guy will say, just the witch-king the, the on
- 20:11this giant like dragon serpent ride of his, he lands and says,
- 20:17when basically laughed in her face, And is like, no man can
- 20:19kill me and she rips her helmet off and says, I am, no, man and
- 20:22sticks the blade in his face and kills him.
- 20:25It's amazing. And it's truly fucking
- 20:28phenomenal shit, okay. Well, and as you just said that,
- 20:32I'm thinking of Ahsoka saying, I'm no Jedi, right?
- 20:35Yeah. Can we talk about the parallel
- 20:38full circle? I'm just I don't know.
- 20:41There are certain things out there that will touch a person
- 20:44and Lord of the Rings is on my list.
- 20:46And apparently, also Dave Focus list.
- 20:48It's a great piece of literature, I'm just saying it
- 20:52all ties together fantasy. They, you know, it's a, the
- 20:54whole world building the character building the story
- 20:57building, the the undercurrent of hope it all runs through
- 21:01these similar stories. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:03I mean, he's very open about how that has influenced him
- 21:08throughout his life. He's not pompous and he doesn't
- 21:11come off as pompous he's just, another dude who likes Star
- 21:14Wars, who happens to also work in the Star Wars world, you
- 21:16know? Right.
- 21:18And it shows He has a love for it.
- 21:19He does. He started in as an artist who
- 21:22then thought, maybe going into animation, would combine his
- 21:25love of Art and music and storytelling and look where it's
- 21:29let him. So there's proof to anybody.
- 21:32If you're questioning whether or not you should follow your
- 21:34passion, follow those things that grab your attention and who
- 21:39knows where it will lead one day?
- 21:41And it may not be a straight line.
- 21:43No, you may not start out as an artist and think you're going to
- 21:46go into animation or whatever. And Point of like the hometown
- 21:50thing. The hometown aspect since I am
- 21:52from that area, not to speak badly about any of it, because I
- 21:55do love where I came from, but it's very blue collar.
- 21:58And a lot of times you feel like, well, it's not possible
- 22:01for me. Yeah.
- 22:02Because he said that about it. That's kind of the fuel back
- 22:06there, you know, or at least, it was for me and he's a deal older
- 22:11than me. So, I mean, you know, maybe it's
- 22:12still, I haven't lived back in that area, for, for many a year,
- 22:15but there are like, just certain things.
- 22:18As you think you can't do because well, I'm not in LA and
- 22:22I'm just kind of a normal kid in a normal run-of-the-mill town.
- 22:25And, you know, there's nothing fancy about where I come from
- 22:29but that doesn't have to stop anybody at all.
- 22:31No. Yeah.
- 22:32I my extended family is from West Virginia which isn't too
- 22:35far off from your family out just to skip across the border.
- 22:39Yeah. And it's the same same thing.
- 22:41It's like hard working. People who work.
- 22:43They I don't know if it's so much now.
- 22:45I know there's a lot of more like fracking industry but it
- 22:48was definitely like Coal, mining steel mining.
- 22:50You know, that kind of stuff out there, a lot of like, civil
- 22:53engineering type work, which is really hard work, but it was it
- 22:57didn't leave a lot of room for going after the Arts so much.
- 23:01Right. Right.
- 23:02And you were, at least I know that I was if you were, you
- 23:05know, sciency or even artistic or something that deviated from
- 23:09that path, then you were kind of you weren't the norm, right?
- 23:13And you were looked at it in that way, you know.
- 23:15Yeah. And I'm glad that Dave went for
- 23:18it. Because yeah, if you have a
- 23:19talent and you have a passion, you should just go for it.
- 23:22Don't let those things limit you.
- 23:23When I think he, you know, he would probably credit his
- 23:25parents a lot. It's so interesting because his
- 23:27parents sounds. So similar to my own parents.
- 23:30His dad is Was An Architect and his mom was an artist a singer
- 23:34and they just from an early age, took their kids to see operas
- 23:38and plays and my parents did the same thing.
- 23:41Even when we have like no money, my parents would still set aside
- 23:46a little money here and there. So that at Christmas time, We
- 23:48would get a big family gift and it was usually to go see a play
- 23:53or to go. See like the Phantom of the
- 23:54Opera when it came to town something like that.
- 23:56I've never seen an opera. It's on my like, bucket list to
- 23:58see it like a true. I gotta go.
- 24:01I've seen always about it too. And like his parents flew him to
- 24:06New York City to see Leonard Bernstein conduct just because
- 24:10they thought you need to see this.
- 24:12It's important. This person is important and so
- 24:14they made it clear that the Arts were acceptable and were
- 24:17important and encourage that and look where it led, you know, my
- 24:21parents did the same thing with me, but not him.
- 24:23I am not an artist working for a Lucas film, but it's still like,
- 24:27no, but you have a podcast, I do.
- 24:29And I am, I am fighting on a daily basis, to find a way to
- 24:34make my passion my life. And so, I find a lot of
- 24:38inspiration and people like Dave filoni who have made made it an
- 24:42easy even said, even on my days off, you know, I'm working I'm
- 24:47creating sculptures. Or a painting and he's like,
- 24:50that's how I relax and people kind of make fun of him because
- 24:52he's not actually relaxing, still like working.
- 24:55But he said like, if my drive is to live a creative life and I
- 24:59have a day where I don't take advantage of that, it's kind of
- 25:02like an opportunity missed. I think that's I think that's
- 25:04great advice for anyone. That's kind of, that's very
- 25:07inspiring one. He said you could have a gift
- 25:09but you still have to work hard at that gift.
- 25:11Oh yeah, that's the thing. A lot of people just ignore it.
- 25:14You study, learn. Ya gotta really go after After
- 25:18the things nothing's going to fall in your lap and if it does
- 25:21that, that's just some sort of crazy ass Miracle.
- 25:25Absolutely, nothing. Worth having comes easy, right?
- 25:29So true, if it did, you wouldn't appreciate it anyway.
- 25:32I mean the appreciation of its hand in hand.
- 25:34It's so true, so true. It's Wednesday too deep in this
- 25:37episode we are. But it's that's why felonious
- 25:41amazing. He is able to like why is it
- 25:43goddamn genius? Well, I have this quote.
- 25:48Wrote down from him, which he was talking about Lord of the
- 25:51Rings and Narnia, but it totally applies to Star Wars as well.
- 25:56And I just, I want to, like, print this and put it on my wall
- 25:59because it's so amazing. He said, evil in and of itself
- 26:02is not a Creator evil takes and twist things and makes things
- 26:06that were good into evil but evil of its own, right?
- 26:11Cannot create that's one of its failings.
- 26:14And I was just thinking Anakin Anakin seriously.
- 26:18We any single Sith that we talked about in last week's
- 26:21episode? Yeah, they can't even take their
- 26:23own kyber Crystal. They have to take someone else's
- 26:26and Bleed it and they nothing. They have is original.
- 26:28They took the Jedi code and rewrote it.
- 26:31They don't have anything, right? Original, it's all tainted,
- 26:35right? Yeah, it's just like it was such
- 26:37a beautiful throwaway comment. He made he made during an
- 26:41interview and I was like, this is beautiful.
- 26:44And Brilliant is poetic, and it's true.
- 26:46It's so true. And it's true like in
- 26:48Storytelling but it kind of feels true in life.
- 26:51Do that? We all start off with good
- 26:53intentions. Everyone starts off innocent.
- 26:55I just think that it's a nice thought to think that everything
- 26:58starts off as good. You know, we all have the
- 27:01potential for good. Yes, filoni.
- 27:06Do you see what you do? You see what you invoke in us?
- 27:09Filoni a sense of poetic Beauty and Harmony and hope.
- 27:13If you want to talk about the penguins, please let me know,
- 27:17sorry? It's the hill.
- 27:18I'm Gonna die on folks. It's Phil, I'm gonna die on.
- 27:21Oh my categories. Did you hear my cat?
- 27:23I did not. Is he meowing?
- 27:24Oh, yes he did. He agreed.
- 27:27He too loves bologna. Oh, he's got good taste.
- 27:30Yeah, I mean, he's not a lost cat but close enough.
- 27:33I want to look at. They're so cute.
- 27:37They're so cute. Even when they snarling hiss,
- 27:39they're cute. It's kind of like what my dog
- 27:41does. She snarls and hisses, but she's
- 27:43pretty cute. She's not a lost cat, but she's
- 27:46real cute. She's very expressive.
- 27:48If she has, she's got those pissy little eyebrows.
- 27:54She always looks cranky even when she's not.
- 27:57I think the best way for us to wrap up.
- 27:59This episode is to hear from Dave filoni himself.
- 28:01We're going to play you a clip from Star Wars celebration where
- 28:05he discusses. What Star Wars is at its core.
- 28:08You'll have to forgive some of the lousy sound quality on this
- 28:11because it is a recording of a recording.
- 28:13There is a bit of fuzz on the audio that being said, it's such
- 28:17a beautiful poignant quote, that we really felt, it was important
- 28:21to include it. So, here it is.
- 28:23It makes you make decisions, you would not make fear, makes you
- 28:27think you're making good decisions in their poor
- 28:28decisions because you're afraid. And if you take nothing else
- 28:32away from sorry, shipping, no decision out of fear going.
- 28:34The emperor says, before you and his destroyed your father and
- 28:38ruined your life and you're powerless and he's made you hate
- 28:42your father almost and you throw him down.
- 28:45You must remember at that critical point to say, I'm going
- 28:49to throw my weapon away cause I love the person next to me.
- 28:53I love my father, I love my mother and nothing.
- 28:55You do can destroy that nothing and you stand on your commitment
- 29:00and then that inspires an etiquette, the hope that
- 29:04inspires the love which is something evil does not
- 29:07understand. That's the core of Star Wars and
- 29:11that is the power that you can't possibly imagine when you're
- 29:14evil, it'll be one speaks of Thank you Dave, for what you've
- 29:19done for Star Wars, and for inspiring not just Lauren, and
- 29:22I, but a host of others that I know are listening right now and
- 29:26who will listen someday, or who just are silent appreciators
- 29:30from afar. Thank you, Dave.
- 29:39Last week's episode was all about whether or not you believe
- 29:42Corky. Crees is actually a Kenobi and
- 29:45we asked our listeners to tell us what they thought.
- 29:48And we had some really interesting responses on
- 29:50YouTube. MH said, I think the physical
- 29:53resemblance between Corky and Obi.
- 29:55One is one of the strongest arguments you can make, and
- 29:58here's why in Clone Wars have a character looks Bears more
- 30:01weight than in other shows, specifically, because of the
- 30:03Clone Army. They use small changes in their
- 30:06appearance to express themselves in no other show that That I've
- 30:09seen has self-identification been so strongly linked with
- 30:12appearance. So is it a stretch that Clone
- 30:14Wars would use appearance to reflect other aspects of
- 30:17identity like familial bonds? Also from YouTube?
- 30:21The Listener durnin said I love the whole Corky Kenobi debate.
- 30:26This truly is one of the only things I actually wish were made
- 30:29Cannon or at least alluded to, in Canon.
- 30:32Obi-Wan story is already so heartbreaking, so it would be
- 30:35something nice amongst all the sadness to know that.
- 30:39His lineage didn't just end with him, that Corky lived on.
- 30:44We also posed this question to people on Instagram and on
- 30:46Twitter and the overall reaction was that people do kind of think
- 30:52that Corky is over ones kid and that's the teen just kept it.
- 30:55A secret from him. I wonder if we'll ever have this
- 30:59mystery solved for us, perhaps in the Kenobi series.
- 31:04Hmm, Dave filoni. Next week, we have something
- 31:10very special for our listeners, very special Lauren.
- 31:14And I, instead of across the miles will be recording together
- 31:19because we are visiting one, another, and it's going to be a
- 31:22grand time, and we'll be recording episodes together,
- 31:25which we have not done yet in the infancy of most things,
- 31:28Kenobi, the podcast. It's gonna be so much fun.
- 31:31I can't wait, I can't wait. We're going to be together.
- 31:34We're going to be talking about Star Wars and you guys are going
- 31:37to actually hear it. It in our voices because it's
- 31:39going to be so much more obnoxious.
- 31:40We're going to be spiking our mics, right?
- 31:43And left. Yeah, but our topic, I think our
- 31:47first topic is going to be, we were actually discussing
- 31:50recently the similarities which there are many more of than the
- 31:55differences between Ahsoka, Tano and asajj Ventress.
- 31:58And I think there's a lot there. We could get like delve into
- 32:01because they have a lot of things in common, believe it or
- 32:04not. Yeah, I think the psychology
- 32:06behind their paths. Be really fun to dig into and I
- 32:09wonder if those characters would admit it to themselves that they
- 32:12were similar, that'll be pretty fun to discuss Ventress and
- 32:16Kenobi can get along for five minutes.
- 32:18I think that Ventress and Ahsoka could get along for five minutes
- 32:24maybe post season 7 Ahsoka. Yeah, maybe then because they
- 32:29were together in the Jedi Who Knew Too Much like the final.
- 32:33Yeah. So because Ark before she leaves
- 32:35the Jedi Order, they had a run-in.
- 32:37It would Get along. Yeah, they'd probably work
- 32:40really well together and that's going to be fun to talk about.
- 32:43I'm excited to do it in person, it's guy.
- 32:45No, it's gonna be great. So we have a question for
- 32:49everybody listening. We want to know how his Dave
- 32:52filoni inspired you. Is there a specific thing in
- 32:56Star Wars that he created that inspired?
- 32:58You is there something about his personality?
- 32:59Something about his history has passed.
- 33:02We would love to hear your answers and if you share them
- 33:04with us we might actually read them on next week's episode when
- 33:07we we're together. Yes.
